40k has really deep, intricate and serious lore. For example, this guy is called Angron because he is really, really angry.
This shit is so fucking stupid and its fans get really angron when you don't think it's the most serious thing ever
>>98039311This guy is called John Grammaticus because he can learn any language.
>>98039191>deep, intricate and serious lore???It's a mass of nerd media pastiches ground up and passed through a 2000 AD filter.
>>98039191Get this.... There is this guy... His name is Alpharius and he is the leader of something called the Alpha Legion!
>>98039338He's being sarcastic but yeah, 40k is basically they grabbed Warhammer Fantasy, put it in Space and then drown it with 2000 AD
>>98039191> For example, this guy is called Angron because he is really, really angry.I can't believe that you are this fucking wrong. You moron. You absolute, stupid, unfathomably idiotic piece of shit. Being mad about something is called anger *because its named after Angron*. I bet you feel foolish now, huh? Delete this thread before anyone else can witness the depths of your embarrassment.
>>98039191>Every Primarch has a meaningful name... Except G-ManThat's main character syndrome right there.
>>98039347That's not really true. For one thing Fantasy didn't really have a world until a few months before Rogue Trader came out, so they were clearly developed in parallel. For another it takes a lot more from Laserburn's limited fluff than Warhammer Fantasy. It was pretty much the idea in modelling terms though, as experience told everyone that sci-fi wargames didn't sell.
>>98039364>Robert Guileman>He's smart >Supposedly
>>98039191I always assumed Angron was what the arena crowd named him.
>>98039453>"he's smart, that's why we must have him make dumb moves that do not fit how he acts to appeal to non-imperium fans"
>His name is Lorgar>he guards the loreThis fucking show
>>98039191Ah, yeah, deep lore is totally why I got into the game about big guys beating each other with chainsaws. Honestly, if you can piss off the lorefags, you have my blessing.
>>98039531yeah, because its not guileman. he died
>Asurman, the Hand of Asuryan, worships Asuryan. He settled the planet Asur, wrote a book called Asurya, and his followers are Asuryani.
>>98039878Guiliman making dumb moves is something like when he tried to fight Angron in Nuceria.Kor Phaeron was also dumb but in this case, Kor Phaeron was being smug and it backfired on him
>>98040018Who cares about Kor Phaeron? That guy is one of the biggest losers.
>>98039191Don't forget the guy named Iron Hands, with the Iron hand, who leads the Iron Hands.
>>98039191That lore is from 30k tho.
>>98039330He's named after a Byzantine patriarch, but your point still stands.
I kinda want to get two defiler, but I don't want to give much money to games, do you think I should try to damaged one specific legion part (EC because they're fags) and explain to games support that I wanted to do an emperor's children defiler ?
>>98040254Do the damage anon. You earned it.
>>98039364What's meaningful about Magnus? They're all powerful so a name meaning grand doesn't really stand out.
>>98040315>Magnus>Writes a Magnum Opus>Called the Book of Magnus
Let's not forget the Emperor "Jimmy Space" inventer of the Space Marines.
>>98039191what about iron hands, the man with iron hands who leads the legion called iron hands
>>98039191>Conrad>Kurtz >Has a heart of darknessBrilliant
>>98039191I dunno, ask /hhg/
>the way I play pretend is better than the way you play pretendelitism over our silly hobbies will always confuse me, especially when it drives one to populate a whole thread with ironic posts about it.
>>98039347And Warhammer Fantasy is just shit they smashed together from when they still made minis for D&D and Runequest
>Leman Russ>is le man who russ(h)es into stupid shit
>>98041585Rus is also the name of proto-Vikings. He's basically called John Viking.
>>98039191>>98039311Do you guys scoff at an orc slave being named "Thrall" too? God only knows the absolutely silly things real life slave owners named their human livestock.
>>98041712The difference is that Thrall just means thrall, it's not a coincidence that a slave was given that name. Blizz didn't try to name him "Thrallonious" or some silly shit that supposedly means something else entirely in a made up language.
>>98041747>Blizz didn't try to name him "Thrallonious" or some silly shit that supposedly means something else entirely in a made up language. Is it any more out of place than Eldar referring to humans as "monkey" with a funny hyphenated and phonetically similar word?
>>98041758Also retarded, also 40k writers.
>>98041758>Warcraft writing is better than WarhammerDire
>>98041758The worst part is that Eldar having an insult for humans that means primitive/brutish/animalistic and comes from the name of a race they exterminated long ago is a really, really good idea, but because they came up with it in the 19-whatevers we are forever stuck with a dumbass khorny joke they refuse to let go of.If it was the exact same thing but with some made up glup shitto alien word it would be so so peak
>>98041343I though Moorcock and Tolkien also got something on it. The former on the whole Chaos thing.
>>98041825Big fan of gay wheelchair dragons huh
>>98041825>>98041913Old Warcraft lore was good. Nu-Warcraft is not. Things started going down hill before Cataclysm but the drop in quality intensified out of control starting in Legion.
>>98039311It really is the worst fanbase. Whenever something stupid or illogical gets pointed out about the setting they're all>DURRR THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S A BLACK COMEDYbut then they'll turn around and freak out about shit like female custodes or character xyz not being taken seriously because >IT'S MATURE AND GRIMDARK
>>98039191Lore question, who's the biggest 'IF MAN' of 40k? As in 'If the writers remember about this character, they have a ton of potential and could impact the story a lot'? I mean its gotta be Decimus, right? Dude sounds insanely OP from the little bit we've seen.
>>98041944Because 80s humor, puns, and social commentary get grandfathered in and often declawed by mental gymnastics by writers. For example, the Red Gobbo and the Gretchin Revolutionary Council will never be seen again because it might butthurt certain groups of people. Meanwhile, shit like femstodes exists to appeal to that very same group of people. If you don't see the reasoning behind the backlash then you're just being obstinate.
>characters having meaningful and relevant names is bad acktuallyWhat the fuck is your standard for good naming? Unpronounceable gibberish made by mashing a keyboard?
>>98040128Or Lion El'Jonson, primarch of the Dark Angels
40gay was always goofy and silly. I don't know why GW paypigs pretend otherwise.
>>98041944>female custodesI missed all the really fun drama about this but man there's no way those niggas would still look discernibly female after being turned into gigaroidbeast fucktrucks. They were absolutely trolling their own customers on purpose with that shit.
As has been pointed out many times.>Ferrus Manus>Means Iron hand>Chapter Master of the Iron handsI mean, it makes sense, but also isn't helping anybody dodge accusations of being unimaginitive.>Ultramarines>Literally Blue>Symbol is basically a big letter UMeanwhile, in animal biology:>Bison Bison Bison>Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla>Troglodytes Troglodytes TroglodytesGuys, I think humans might actually just be bad at naming things.
>>98042024Except the Red Gobbo has been getting a yearly Christmas model for the last few years now and even got a novel centered around him.
Funny part about the primarchs, half of them (or more) were swept offworld before awakening to their parents that end up naming them. They end up with these names prior to emps finding them.>they have the iconic names before being picked up>no sign in the writing or plot that emperor foresaw their names and named their legions after them
>>98043126He didn't, the Primarchs renamed their legions after being found by the Emperor.
>>98043121>Except the Red Gobbo has been getting a yearly Christmas modelThe flanderization is strong.
he's so cool though
>>98043019Custodians have recently been getting proportionally modified to look like Big People instead of roided out rape apes. Female Custodes would in fact look like big hot women out of the armor.
>>98040184I assume his name has at least as much to do with the fact that Aleister Crowley's magickal name was Grammaticus.
>>98043226A very elaborate trolling of their own fanbase. Next they'll say they secretly used eldar DNA and that's the REAL their helmets are pointy.
>>98042760the only reason he isn't viewed as on par with Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau is because a Victorian-era poet is more obscure to the average person in current year
>>98041907That goes without saying, but the way Warhammer does Chaos has some Runequest influences(or "influences") on it. Chaos breaking into reality and corrupting it, and entire wasteland in Glorantha destroyed by it literally called the Wastes, goat headed beastmen who are chaos mutants and smear shit everywhere is literally just ripped straight from the broo of Runequest, and probably more. The influences go deep because GW held the license in the UK, so they know what they're doing. Chaos in Glorantha is more influenced by Lovecraft than Moorcock, at least from what the original Runequest Appendix N indicates, and probably the whole chaoskampf thing in mythology too. Though Moorcock is still there since he was still hugely influential, the Lunars were probably meant to be a more ancient and Mediterranean MelniboneWarhammer leaned more into Moorcock and that's where the Chaos symbol was stolen from.Tolkien influenced of them. Moorcock influenced the rest of them, with their own quirks. D&D leans towards Poul Anderson's ideas of the Law-Chaos metaphysics, Runequest likes to do more comparative mythology and of course Lovecraft since they're the Call of Cthulhu guys, and Warhammer leans more into Moorcock but also does everything.
>>98041944>>DURRR THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S A BLACK COMEDYThat's still genuinely a way better response, and probably a true one considering how much they stole from 2000AD comics, than them pretending it's a super duper cereal setting you can't laugh at and compare to a 90s kids/teen comic. They then prove their maturity by making the conversation about how their favorite fictional characters can beat up yoir favorite fictional characters
Is this just a British thing? It's Rowling tier naming.
>>98039330>John Grammaticus was a human operative of the mysterious xenos organisation known as the Cabal, and had been genetically altered by them to become what they referred to as a "Perpetual," a being who was capable of reincarnation and therefore was effectively immortal, much like the Emperor of Mankind.>Also like the Emperor, Grammaticus was a natural psyker whose main psychic power allowed him to act as a powerful logokine, a psyker who is able to understand any language, no matter its form or origin, and unleash the innate power of words. This reads like some fanfiction shit
>>98039191Get this anon, there's this guy known as the Emperor of Mankind, but he isn't even human.
>>98046845I don't know 40k lore enough to have known this
>>98046815>can know any languageOh hello Doug Ramsey
>>98039346>impostor legion>have the most conspicous custom armor with completely different surface texture than all the other SMsif that cloaking paintjob effect fans like to paint isn't canon then they make little sense.
>>98046907They just switch gear and mimic how other people look.Deliverance Lost basically did that with four dudes pretending to be Raven Guard and not knowing how many and which infiltrated.
