How do you handle the difference between player and character knowledge?
>>98042443>TQIt's difficult because I could get them to roll to see what they know, but then it can make people have to play like they're stupid. I usually base it on the setting, how common is a troll, do most people know a red dragon is immune to fire? As DM I often try to give hints of some sort and describe the effects if they're particularly effective or weak against it.
>>98042443>tqI have never lived in aread with either king or coral snakes, but even as kid I knew the rhyme to tell them apart. I know the difference between a grizzly and a black bear, and how to respond to them, just like gators and crocs. I know how to fend off a shark despite having thalassaphobia and avoiding the ocean. And I knew all of that as a kid before the internet was a thing. Hell, nobody here has come across a vampire, but we all know their weaknesses and shit. I don't see why troll regeneration or stuff like that shouldn't be common knowledge in most settings.
>>98042443Metaknowledge of monsters in my setting depends on what kind of monster it is and the character. In general, characters will have some kind of knowledge about the big monsters like vampires or dragons where they're told stories about them as a kid. Characters will also have some knowledge of monsters that they have run across prior to adventuring. An elven ranger will likely know more about various forest monsters than the average adventurer, while a halfling farmer might happen to know more than the usual about hippogriffs because one kept making off with the sheep his pa was raising when he was a kid.Mechanically, I'll adjust the results of whatever a check for information about a monster ends up being based on what the baseline knowledge that character should have. Someone who should have some knowledge about the monster rolling poorly might mean that they only recall one or two important details about thr monster. Likewise, an excellent roll on a monster the character has no framework to work off will result in a really good inference rather than any kind of solid information.
>>98042443Part of it is the history / nature / arcana checks which you dont want to step on but also if you live in silverymoon you’re probably aware that the evermoors is also called the trollmoors and is highly associated with trolls and that people who travel into the moors would bring torches with them every time.Youve gotta be able to reward the players who actually take those skills with checks they can do to get the info but also some of it should just be common sense.
Liches are one of those rare types of monster where "less is more" can be truly said to apply.
>>98043443Except that 5e has demiliches as less powerful than liches for some awful reason
>>98042277Idk if this anon is here but their AC is mega low because they are all casters and a ranger with no tank or healer or martial/melee.Average fight is AoE and high single target attacks that end everything in 3 turns or less but one of them (rarely but has happened 2-3 at once) is usually downed and genuinely on the table for permadeath. Keeps things moving pretty quick though because we play 1-2 times a month only.they crafted their own armor and weapons and two made charms based off parts and loot from their hunting arc that took a few months but also did main quest and side quest along the way so some got rare parts than others so some of these come off playing favorites because of that.(Also some of them didnt even keep track of their inventory so theres that.)I'll reconsider the bard charm and the ranger charms then, I def got 2014 and 2024 confused.Any ideas you may have for them?
Im using A.I fed with 110 pages of my personally written game world lore to generate characters i have story specific goals for and rely on its cues and my voice acting, humor, and improv skills to enrich the game as well as unique puzzles that match character lore and interactables/loot i woild have taken days to finish.Players have told me theyre more hyped than ever and the group chat and phonecalls just to discuss the game have picked up.Bros... Im starting to think AI is actually based when used as a tool for gameplay padding.
>>98042443>How do you handle the difference between player and character knowledge? It genuinely just comes down to the players being nonfaggots who try to actually roleplay their characters and accept the fact that they might be "suboptimal" and lose on 0.5 damage per round just because their characters have no actual in-lore reason to know what a monster they have never seen in their life before might be vulnerable to.

>tq“5E is a solved game at this point, even casuals can steamroll your best made encounters if they make the correct build. This is what inevitably happens to any game, video games included, where the primary skill expression is “select the optimal character options from literal lists of options.” You might not like this or even refuse to acknowledge it, but this simply how 5E as a game is designed. You will continue to run into same recurring issues that come with known monster stats vs optimal pc builds for as long as you play 5e. For some people though, that’s all they want from a tabletop rpg - a simple challenge they know they can win by putting their character sheet on autopilot. It’s what makes our show consistently deliver the very thing returning viewers want.”- Matt Mercer 2017
>>98043753>matt no consequences Mercer
>>98043779How does that address the player v character knowledge issue? Sounds like you’re expecting the players to meta game at every corner
>>98043810Because even though they know the nogs stats, they will not want to fight it and their hubris will lead them to think they can peacefully resolve the situation. Essentially, they will relax around even though any normal rational person would know to fight or flee. And that’s when it kills them - when they’re caught flat footed trying to reason with it out of misplaced sympathy
>>98043827Sounds like you’re just trying to bait people into running friend groups for some weird reason.Like that isn’t a named stated monster like a troll with a fire weakness that people know of
>>98043882Just describe the nog to them. It will get the exact reaction I described. Try it.
>>98043888So I do this, they post on Reddit, redditors tell them “hey your dm might be racist” and they leave my group? Thats the point of this?Or is this a rocks fall you die type beat?
>>98043936You just flushed a group of retards out of your life in that scenario. You should be thanking me. Anyone who isn’t racist should be deeply embarrassed and ashamed to be so deliberately, suicidally ignorant. You will also live longer.Anyways yeah, the type of people who blindly flock to simple games like 5E for a sense of false accomplishment and gay pride are the game’s main problems. Otherwise it’s great for casual chit chat style socializing in between playing tabletop role playing games.
>>98043965So this had nothing to do with the TQ and was just about pushing your political ideology like a fucking tourist ?Wowee
>>98044024It answers the TQ very well actually. Do you have any other questions about 5E that I can answer for you op (a fag)

Both powers recharge at dawn. Now the armor provides protection without affecting action economy. ALTERNATIVELY, you can stick to the books and pull items from them
>>98044280So you get a flexible cantrip that doesn't scale, and you can give someone else in the party a bonus spell from the Artificer list. Not even like Magic Initiate where they get one free use of the spell, either. Any party member that would benefit a lot from this would similarly benefit just by taking Magic Initiate themselves. Why do you think it needs to be toned down?

Hot take, but Monk is easier for first timers to learn combat mechanics than Fighter
>>98045872XPtoLevel3 was right. Newbies have more fun playing monks than fighters. Don't know if they are easier, but in my experience they interact with the features more.
>>98045667These look retarded
>>98045872I'm not sure if I'd agree. Mainly because all of the new players with Monks I've witnessed in combat have been>roll high initiative thanks to good Dex>run up to enemies thanks to extra speed>attack action, bonus action flurry>enemy turns, get hit twice and drop to 0 HP>rest of the party spends the combat bailing out the monkThe most successful I've seen a new player with a Monk is when they were a Sun Soul Aaracokra, where flight and ranged attacks meant they avoided immediately getting dogpiled.
>>98045967I can only speak from experience, but the very first time I played as an Aasimar Samurai Fighter. I hated it. I was overwhelmed with a buffet of options and mechanical overload that led to me stalling from analysis paralysis. GM allowed me to switch to Kensei Monk and suddenly combat became simple. The limitations of the ki points made it intuitive to know what I could and could not do at any given moment. Bookkeeping and inventory tracking were no longer focal points. Throw darts, flurry of blows, and run like Jet Li in Hero. Shit was cash.
>>98043548It seems like you're using AI as a tool and putting the work in to train it with your ideas as opposed to simply writing a prompt to ChatGPT.What has AI given you?
How do you guys feel about inter-player obfuscation / lying about ingame facts? I.e.>john fighter is working on building a torture dungeon>John the player when asked by jane the player if he's building a torture dungeon says no>jane the mage finds out ingame hes building a torture dungeon>Jane the player feels lied to. Obviously this is a talk to your players question if you're experiencing it, but where do you guys fall on the spectrum? For my money it feels not great to deal with, especially if one player has taken to doing this uniltaterally. If theres a discussion about it beforehand or some other conversation having taken place that player-to-player mis/dis information is play but without that aspect this just seems shite to deal and play with.
>>98045947Alright fella let's see what orcs you like
>>98046071The way we tend to do it in my group is>Jane the Mage: "Are you building a torture dungeon?">John the Fighter: "What? No, haha, that's crazy.">John the Player: "He is absolutely building a torture dungeon.">Jane the Player: "That's kind of fucked up.">John the Player: "It's really fucked up! But Jane the Mage doesn't know yet, so really let that indignation fester for now and then really let him have it when she does find out."
>>98046112If you're sure.
>>98046071Trying to have secrets and reveals between players never feels like it works. There's no reason to not just tell the other players what your character is up to, and then trust people not to metagame about it. The 10 seconds of surprise when the player pulls off their 'reveal' simply isn't worth the potential headaches.
Which do you think is the best fullcaster (both class and subclass) between level 3 and level 5? And if you're asking what I mean by "best"... I'm referring to control or blaster, whichever you think makes the biggest impact at those levels.
>>98045209Truthfully, creating homebrew for the sake of it, homebrew that you'll never use, is still a means of exercising your brain. It's a creative process and infinitely more worthwhile than doom scrolling or jacking off or doing daily battlepass quests while listening to some /pol/ podcast in the background. You made something. Even if it's not good or no one ever uses it.
>>98046071>Obviously this is a talk to your players question if you're experiencithis kind of thing is settled during session zero so it's never a problem in game>session 0: don't do this shit says the DMproblem solved>session 0: not my fucking business says the DMJust like how you'd settle pvp. You talk about it before the campaign starts.
How long do you think a one-shot should be?
>>98046317one session
>>98045872Maybe in 2024 rules. But Monk ignores weapons and armor so you don't learn those rules.
>>98046317Last time I tried to make a one-shot it lasted 3 sessions. In total it was about 8 hours though which you could certainly do in a single day.
>>98046317Around 5-6 hours I find is necessary unless you're going extremely minimalist, though that sometimes means that a one-shot ends up being a two shot if you're playing with people who can't squeeze in more than 3-4 hours in a night.
Truly a gaped and ruined game.
>>980463171 session of approximately 5 hours

Im issuing a challenge. Convince me why I should stop DMing 4e and DM 5e. What is the difference? I know nothing of 5e. What makes it a superior iteration if anything does?
>>98046629do you play regularly and have a full table of people to play with while playing 4e?if you enjoy the game, and you are playing it regularly, why do you care about our opinion on swapping?
>>98046645Its getting stale. For the last 3 campaigns people have played basically the same characters over and over again.
>>98046629This >>98046645The biggest reason to go for 5e is because it's easier to find players. In the context of swapping from 4e, it's also simpler to an extent, but if you're already happy running 4e and your players aren't struggling with the combat, then that's not exactly a big selling point.>>98046652If that's the trouble you're having with 4e, then I'd heavily suggest against 5e. Build variety would not be something I'd list as one of 5e's strong suits.
Question to you all, this smug magic item trader needs a name. She's totally not a Celestial in disguise just enjoying life in the mortal plane
>>98046662I see what you are saying but you are not being specific about 5e's selling points.
>>98046652That sounds like a table issue. I loved 4e it is my favorite edition, but my players all know 5e. I managed to get them to try genesys though so might run that next. Enjoy your 4e and try asking them to play something new.5e is just streamlined 3.5 with “bounded accuracy”. Bonuses stay relatively small so low-level creatures can still matter and high-level characters can still fail
>>98046652Its still dnd but its more streamlined w/ combat and less dependent on feat chains. numbers are squished into Adv/disadv. game should be close enough in feel but different enough to get you to understand why you like 4e. there's no harm playing part of the starter set or something for a few sessions then dropping it if its not for you if you love the crunch, pf2e might be what you want, or draw steel - just to try new stuff.
>>98046669Tjašetanka
>>98046701What does that mean?
>>98046733Just a woman's name in one of my conlangs.
>>98046678>I see what you are saying but you are not being specific about 5e's selling points. That's because everything you've said indicates to me that you wouldn't particularly enjoy 5e. I'm not gonna lie to you and act like it's something that'll solve all your problems.
>>98046652>Its getting staleJust homebrew some new classes or convert some things. I have like, a lot of reasons to hate 4e, but if I liked it and so did my table I'd be good to run it for my whole life, it's got a bunch of unexplored mechanical areas too.

>>98046822I'm tired of this defense being used as some gotcha. With how long just two combat encounters and some exploration takes, a natural loop will be: go to dungeon, go through 2 combats 2 puzzles then go back to town for new quest and rest, sometimes you can squeeze in a random encounter on the way, but really it feels like you're just dragging and not getting to the real juicy dungeon stuff.>Do not fucking rest until you get back to town or I'll kill you with a random cr14 monster in this normal ass woods 3 miles from town>n-no! >>98046853I was being sarcastic autist-kun
>>98046858thank god, I feel a bit less insane, also a group likely has one million spell slots and s.slot recovery mechanics between them with a combat being average 3 rounds, the casters don't need many slots to use Shield on hand in order to use it reliably when one of them gets targeted by enough foes for them to use it.
>>98046689>onuses stay relatively small so low-level creatures can still matterI feel like this is so overstated. I fucking wish any of the human guard npcs and bandits and iconic goons like goblins meant anything beyond lvl 5+.

>>98042443>TQThe qualities of a Troll, Vampire and Dragon should be common knowledge, they're some of the most frequent enemies an Adventuring Party will run into and surely stories about them will have crossed countriesIt's monsters like an Aberration or the obscure Monstrosity that should have Players asking DMs if they would know anything about the creatures. I'd rather not have my Players act like retarded country bumpkins over a Red Dragon
>>98047004I've played with the idea of having creatures be more obscure and basically playing it off as the only one they know of. So it's not like, "a werewolf attacked the village" but it's "THE werewolf of myth has come back to haunt us once more". Lets you do the whole "It is said that he is half man...half wolf" tropy dialogue. Won't work if players don't play along of course.
I just found out that Heroic Inspiration doesn't stack, lol.Either my GM doesn't know either, or he doesn't give a damn about it.

>elder scrolls campaign sandbox idea>a Tower is malfunctioning and causing a sort of warp in the west style scenario where the landscape changes in a way similar to stalker's Zone and the players must investigate the areasound good yea or nay
>>98045667Boarcs.
>>98047041What I do is have "Heroic Inspiration," the resource granted by various in-game features, not stack with itself. And then "Inspiration" is independent ticker that too does not stack with itself, that I give out to the player that did the session recap, or any other reason of my choosing. Heroic Inspiration needs to last between sessions, but Inspiration does not.
>>98047054Isn't the whole warp in the west just a result of divergent timelines all technically occurring, as a way to have the different endings of Daggerfall all be canon? I'm not sure if that would cause the sort of landscape-warping anomalies you're talking about. Even if it's causing some weird bleedover between parallel timelines, that shouldn't exactly result in large changes to the landscape.Elder scrolls lore aside, it's a fine enough idea. Having a major landmark causing magical oddities gives a good reason for the sandbox to stay focused on a particular region. It does ultimately point the party towards finding a way to fix it, which might distract them from trying to explore unless it takes them some time to figure out what's causing the problems.
>>98047041Maybe he played BG3, where it stacks 3 times.
>>98047073it isnt 1:1 like the warp in the west since that was a one time thing to canonize a bunch of diferent shit at once just something similar that happenedmy idea is that there is an inverted tower (so underground) in the area that is causing reality to act a little weirdmoving mountains, cleared dungeons regenerating, ayleid ruins becoming pristine and fixed then crumbled the next day, magic items randomly appearing, things like thatbasically an in universe explanation of a very game-y sandboxfixing the tower will be the main quest like in any elder scrolls game that the players can just ignore, it wont end the world just make this small part very strange

>>98047133>supergreenI prefer when people use different words too. That way it’s not a direct copy paste but taking inspiration instead. Everything is a copy of a copy but generally people should try to put their own spin on it at least.
>>98042443>With monsters like trolls, vampires, dragons etc most players know their immunities and weaknesses by now. How do you handle the difference between player and character knowledge? It's common knowledge for adventurers, the same way IRL video games when>you can shoot a red barrel to explode it>if the game suddenly gies you a lot of healing items/ammo, a boss is proably comming up>if you can reach a water fall by walking to it, there is probably a cave or a secret behind it>entering an empty hallway and seeing the quick save icon flash at the bottom corner of the screen>you enter a room filled with corpses/skeletons, they are probably going to animate and attack youJust like trolls being weak to fire, that last one actually also falls under common knowledge for adventurers. Not sure what do. I have a boss fight with Strahd happening next to the blessed pool in Krezk. My main problem is that as far as terrain goes, it's a pretty boring location since it's just a body of water. Granted there is a gazebo (already destroyed) and a few trees on the map, but I like my fights to have multiple things going for them and I'm kinda worried about that one.Any recommendations?
>>98048283Maybe Strahd does some shenanigans to give himself terrain. Like bringing a portable fortress or since he is the land altering the terrain in some way. Seems like the shit he’d do. Make sure it benefits him.
