Welcome to Open OSR.This thread is for open OSR discussions. Including old-school D&D, retroclones, and broader OSR-adjacent games. There is a general for those of you who prefer OSR games strictly inspired by the first decade D&D that can be found here >>98041565Please do not engage with trolls.Thread Question: What OSR game have you recently Ran, played, read or plan to run soon?
OP here, I am playing in an OSE game using the advanced booklet. I really would to run something AD&D 2e again or maybe Hyborea as it looks interesting. I have been reading Ambition and Avarice, which seems interesting as well.
>>98048482Why would you post this immediately after your previous one got pruned? Are you stupid? Do you not know how to take a hint?
>>98048510>Why would you post this immediately after your previous one got pruned?Immediately after the previous TWO were pruned:>>98048321 >>98045946
Dropping a list of discussion "loose ends" from last thread.
>>98048536>>98046951>What's the Assassin's Assassination Table like in ACKS II? Post as much detail as you like, the changes from AD&D are likely to be minor, I'm guessing.
>>98048492>I really would to run something AD&D 2e"AD&D" 2e is not OSR, hence it's not on topic. Please take this discussion somewhere else, thanks.
>>98048536>>98046974>I for one am really enjoying your class breakdowns, I think they're going to make me a better DM and player.Seconding the request. Are Demi-Humans next?
>>98048544You should go to the osrg. Ad&d 2e is on topic in my Open OSR thread. This is not the osrg
>>98048548>Ad&d 2e is on topicWrong.>>98048536>>98046998>>he fails to draw the obvious conclusion from thisWhat would that conclusion be? I'M not following
>>98048536>>98047015>Could you elaborate on this? I don't know a lot about ACKS, but I'm very interested in talking about it in detail, in this thread.
>>98047333>Do you guys even like ACKS, or is it just a bludgeon for you to use against your perceived enemies? The greatest in life is to crush the enemies of Gygax, Macris, and Johnson, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their fishfag.
>>98048546>Seconding the request. Are Demi-Humans next?I gotchu, bro. Here's the first one, the Dwarven Craftpriest. This is a Dwarf Cleric, but a couple important things set it apart from the Crusader (the ACKS II not-Cleric), in addition to the standard Dwarf race powers:1. Access to a great number of proficiencies and a big bonus (+3 on d20) on ALL of them.2. Studious Divine Magic. Like the Witch, the Craftpriest uses spellbooks with Divine spells. Pretty cool!See you later, bros!
>>98048482>Thread Question: What OSR game have you recently Ran, played, read or plan to run soon?ACKS II. I love that game to bits. Best RPG books since 1981.
Reminder that the real /osrg/ is here:>>98041565>>98041565>>98041565
>>98048565Jesus that's some blatant and certified AI slop
>>98048531It's like he's *trying* to prove that he's a threadspammer and the troll in this situation.Which, I mean, granted, he is, it's the truth, but you wouldn't expect him to just admit it.
>>98048627It's ACKs of course it's AI slop
>>98048600So would you like me to come talk about ad&d 2e there? Because if you keep trying to move open OSR chat there I can do that.
>>98048627>>98048637Samefishfag.
>>98048632I guess the only way to confirm that is to let the thread be and he'll continue spamming the threadsonly you can't really let that happen because your 'tardness doesn't actually hold up on a free market of ideasso now you can't have any sleep
>>98048643Nope, That is two people. I am the second though
>>98048640Of course not. "AD&D" 2e isn't on topic there either, or indeed in any thread labeled an OSR thread. If you want to talk about 2e, simply start a /2eg/. It's how it works with every edition; you don't talk about 3e in /4eg/ or /5eg/, or vice versa. In fact, even Pathfinder has its own general even though that's practically the same game as 3e.
>>98048565Next: the Dwarven Vaultguard. Second and last of the Dwarf classes in the core ACKS II book. This is just the Dwarf Fighter of B/X with a few minor twists, like the amazing cleaves. Do you prefer the Craftpriest or the Vaultguard?
>>98048645OP here, they know it's not one person. As I said, If they want me to only post OSR stuff in the osrg I can do that, but they don't agree with me on what that is. So I am trying not to do what they do, and post off topic shit in Thier echo chamber
>>98048648>>98048661>I'm more than one person. No, you're not even one person, since you're a subhuman.
>>98048649If you keep spamming my threads and getting them removed, I will start posting there. You can't have it both ways.I can either post in your thread or an open thread. Which one is going to depend on you.
>>98048661>>98048649Talk about games, any %Fishfag's high score: 0%
>>98048640I would like you to drown in the diarrhea ditch of Bangalore, but you have diarrhea-adapted gills, so there's very little hope for that. Now talk about games instead of whinging. Do you prefer the Dwarven Vaultguard or the Dwarven Craftpriest?
>>98048669Eh first guy here. I tried in post 1. The trolls don't like talking about games. If you want to, go ahead I would be happy to do so. Whatcha currently playing?
>>98048627>the slop book>pualdron mismatched>kneepads mismatched>gloves mismatched>slop maile>slop belt with slop chain>axe edge is nonsensical>legs are completely messed upIt's funny, because it's a lot like a snapshot of much earlier AI technology. These sort of generation errors are still commonplace because the underlying technology will always struggle with consistency, but it's people who have just become so much more experienced while also having much better tools to go in and fix mistakes.
>>98048680>Whatcha currently playing?ACKS II. I'm loving it. Best game published since 1981.
>>98048687Could be worse.Could be "AD&D" 2e art.
Giff make a lot of sense when you understand hippos are just murder machines with anger issues
>>98048727>One-liner devoid of contentTotally not fishfag. Also 2e is not OSR, so please take this "discussion" elsewhere, thank you.
Also what's not to love about a ship that is 50% cannon?
>>98048746And another one-liner devoid of content. These threads have literally zero reason to exist.
>>98048689Again I'm having troubles understanding the hilarious macris/bodybuilder shops, are they posted by ackshills or fishfags in an ironic sense?
>>98048687There are also tools being used now, like night shade, to poison art AI steals to create its own work. I have no respect for any paid product using AI
>>98048667>if you get my spamposts removed for being spam, I'll post spam somewhere else which... you'll get removed for being spam! take that!!!dang, what a harsh threat, how will we ever recover, gotta fold immediately ig
>>98048655Enough shitflinging, let's talk about games again with something better than one-liners devoid of content à la fishfag. The next awesome ACKS II race-and-class is the Elven Nightblade. This is Alexander Macris's take on the AD&D Magic-User/Thief with a few tweak. The first one is that the spell progression is actually slower than that of a full Magic-User, which allows for a higher level limit and a lower XP cost per level. Additionally, this class has a slightly different repertoire of skills with respect to the Thief, with Acrobatics out of the box. It also gets Quiet magic at 2nd level, allowing it to cast quiet spells, which is very in line with the class's theme and purpose.
>>98048760They are by the OSR trolls, who are a mix of ACK shrills and just trolls.
>>98048760Does this look like someone who is capable of irony?
>>98048772
>>98048687>pualdron>maileLLM generated slop post
>>98048727>>98048746There's a dedicated Spelljammer thread for you to post in: >>98027502
>>98048827That is actually my thread. I missed it this morning and thought it archived. I was just messing with the troll. But the Giff always amused me, colonial British murder hippos with a love of boom. What's not to like?
>>98048727I think public perception of a lot of animals has considerably changed since the pre-2000 era. The "Hippos are pudgy hungry-hungry cuteys" image had likely already been considerably eroded by the "Hippos are fast and brutal, territorial savages" reality of the creature at the time, but there's still a lot of animal mythology that hadn't been quite "fixed" yet.Like hyenas being barbaric scavengers. You still see that with gnolls being one of the evil bloodthirsty savage races, demonized for their eerie "laughs", when hyenas have actually very structured and civil societies, that have excellent communication and intelligence that makes them elite pack hunters. The classic image of a lion, king of the jungle, chowing down on a carcass it had nobly brought down while a pack of hyena scavengers wait to pick up the scraps is actually an inverted story of what more commonly occurs: A pack of efficient and coordinated hyenas work hard to take down a considerably larger animal, only for a lion to appear later and steal the kill. If gnolls were anything like the creature they share a head with, they would probably be a neutral or perhaps even good race.
>>98048847>>98048852>Nogame retard "discussing" setting lore instead of playing.
>>98048852oh yeah, that is a good point. We have these very basic ideas we build into the furry races for sure. I would be down for a structured Gnoll society. I think that could work pretty well. I don't recall the name but the Mystara setting had a underground elf/Gnoll society I found interesting
>>98048649>In fact, even Pathfinder has its own general even though that's practically the same game as 3e.I'm under the impression they're notably different if you get into the weeds about it.
>>98048645Why did you screenshot my post?
>>98048886Tried to find more about that, but got immediately distracted by this peak elf design from the Shadow over Mystara video game.
>>98048886>>98048852Holy shit using chat GPT to simulate a conversation with yourself?
>>98048957It's like a sexy link, but female. Definitely has a vibe for sure
>>98048680Getting a Sword and Wizardry Complete Revised game off the ground for my usual gaming group. We started with The Lichway, and they've been having a blast. I'm a bit worried about the ability for these campaigns to hold some of the players' attention long term, since they tend to be pretty strongly motivated by build-op shit. I'm pulling out all the stops to get push past that, and it seems to be working, they're really enthusiastic.
>>98048957>correct number of fingers>belt has small but detailed and cute charms>all limbs are proportional>sensible and sport traveling pouch>design is attractive and full of soul>legs are a masterpiece>thigh gapThis art is approved.
>>98048986>I'm a bit worried about the ability for these campaigns to hold some of the players' attention long termKill whoever seems the most bored.
>>98048957Also I had the champions of Mystara boxed set. The name of the group was the Graakhalia and they lived underneath the desert near Sind
>>98048999I expect that's going to happen sometime in the next session or two. They just restocked back in town, with the intention of going back to kill the Susurrus. We'll see how the results of that go for them lol
>>98048986S&W is one of the BX based game, right? I am glad you are having a good time. But some groups struggle with games with two few options. I mostly think that one comes from video games and how gaming culture has shifted over time. What classes/races make up your group?
>>98049012How is that box set, is there anything for people kind of lukewarm on the airship stuff? I'm running my current campaign in Mystara (Karameikos, natch), and the materials look beautiful, but I've never really been very taken with the airship/fantasy geopolitics stuff that seemed to dominate the setting in its later years.
>>98049054It is airship heavy, but fuck is making them complicated. About 50 % is airship stuff. The green book is more setting information. It's worth it for the naps if you can get it cheap but not sure I would call it a must have. They may have it in the OSRchive. They have a lot of the TSR stuff in there.
>>98049047It's actually based on OD&D! So it's closer to B/X than 1e, but nowhere near the similarities between Moldvay and Mentzer basic. OD&D separates race and class, for example. On top of that, S&W makes some further changes to OD&D, like consolidating all the saving throws into one score and an ascending AC option.
>>98049012I just realized that I need to put an airship into my campaign.
>>98048492>OP here, I am playing in an OSE game using the advanced bookletHow are the new classes? I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on them.
>>98049078I notec there are a lot of versions of it. I know it's been around but for ages I avoid BX based games as I really hate race as class. I like they ideas they consolidated rules and implications acending AC, that IMO is always a good change.>>98049081Sweet gods do I love airships. You can find the Cards from that boxed set and many spelljammer cards online. They have deck plans on the back.
>>98048986Nice anonAlways glad to see people actually play games
>>98048746I did some rough math, and calculated that there's a 99.99997% that firing that canon would kill everyone on board, rip the ship into splinters, and make Jesus weep.
>>98049117I myself and not playing one of the new ones. We split race as class and use acending AC and a couple other things.I can tell you what I think of them just reading them though if you wanna know something about them.
>>98049129The most recent one (Complete Revised) is the most polished from what I've seen, but my experience with earlier editions was pretty limited (playing in a two months long campaign of the original S&W Complete). If you want something straightforward as B/X, but without having Race as Class, I do really recommend checking it out
>>98049155But the giff would find that glorious. Besides it's spelljammer, it doesn't use science. It's a flaying ship with its own gravity plane and air bubble in a universe where stars are just reflections on a massive Crystal spell floating in and endless sea of gas.Say what you want but that setting is fantasy to the core while giving things like physics the middle finger as they chug beer and circling your planet (which could be flat) with a ship shaped like an insect and fighting off a fleet of mind flayers.
>>98049207Sweet no race as class consider me interested. I'll check out the revised. I am bad to look at pdfs, if I like em I tend to by dead tree versions as I like having physical books
>>98049187I gave them a glance over a while back, and didn't have enough faith in them to warrant a much deeper dive.Even if they're alright, I feel like they'd really have to be adding a lot to the game to make them worth it, because I'd be opening a can of worms. Start with just the Advanced list, and next thing you know you've got a party that consists of a goblin, a tiefling, a ratling, and a dragonborn.
>>98049284>>Start with just the Advanced list, and next thing you know you've got a party that consists of a goblin, a tiefling, a ratling, and a dragonborn.I don't find that to be an issue. I am currently playing a Ratling magic user lol. But you can easily just use the non race classes and just not the new race options
>>98049255I can recommend the print version of S&W:CR, really nice matte finish hardcover.
>>98049336Okay, I looked at Thier website and honestly kinda dig the understated cover. Have you used the book up options? New classes and taxes intrigued me
>>98049378Nah, I haven't really looked at Book of Options, sorry. I've been considering bringing in some of the new classes later in my campaign if player characters die once I've had a chance to look at them more closely. For now, I want to keep it simple and stick to the classes in the core. Expect for Monk, I pretty much always leave Monk out when I run these games.
