Looking for a fantasy race or creature that is near human but visibly not human, roughly average human in size, preferably not furry or too weird, and has a middling level of magic or "mundane"-ness.I'll take anything at this point but right now I'm gravitating towards a Hobgoblin. The character concept is a hooded and masked wearing person who lives in a mostly humans-only style setting.

>>98053389Hear me out.I’m assuming you’re playing a certain system because nobody outside of a certain system would bother asking. If you’re going to play some unusual race you need to ask yourself what actual motivation this character has for being there and exactly HOW unlike their own race they can be before you might as well just play the same character as a human and not have to reach for justifications.A hobgoblin character sounds kickass in theory but bear in minds that hobgoblins are effectively waffen SS in terms of culture: they’re disciplined and can work well with lawful parties and their morals effectively sidestep violence altogether and just assume you’re going to regularly kill, capture, and dominate others. So if your character ISN’T living within that moral framework you now effectively don’t have a hobgoblin at all. You have a human with a different aesthetic. Hobgoblins also aren’t loners: more than any difference in ethics this alone makes them a difficult PC because at no point would a hobgoblin ever be some single stranger living in a hood and cloak. They would love part of some military structure and would only depart from it if another, conceivably stronger structure was offered. I mean you’re basically playing Worf from Star Trek and that’s fine but I would drop all the cool visuals you have in your head and just make the character, keep an open mind, and ask yourself “what would a hobgoblin do here”. Before you commit to playing a monstrous race. >why should I give a shitA grounded and well-thought character is the difference between an obnoxious call for attention that wearies the table, and a fun and interesting addition to your game. It’s really that simple. Don’t force a poorly thought out meme character if you dont want to be a pest.

The nonhuman-ness is an important factor regardless of what actual kind of being the character ends up being. This has been established already within the party/story dynamic. I'm just not sure what it should be exactly.
>>98053389Tieflings can be as human or as non-human as you need.If you decide horns to be their only demonic characteristic, that would explain the hood.
pls
>>98053389Half elf. I'm not kidding when was the last time anyone played or saw someone playing a half elf? 2000? Other option could be whatever the great great great grandkids of half elementals are called. Just a bit strange in a notable way but doesn't do much for them. Final option is chinaman or chinaman equivalent.
