They're going to try and save themselves, but they will only do it in a way where it will make for a good story to tell in the end. Ancient greeks knew this through thumos, to be a great warrior and hero is to fully feel all ranges of emotions and they were also like elves very gay, so it's an apt comparison. It's also why they can run into a kool-aid man dreadnaught bursting through a rock and get crushed by it, while decrying it as an inferior without being hypocrites, as some would think them to be.
