Now there is a saying that 40k is a satire. I’ve never really seen concrete agreement on what the satire originally was.
I always thought the satire was that fascism is only justified when mankind is facing so many threats that lead to worse fates than extinction therefore saying fascism is never good and bad.
But that’s just my theory.

/b/ back in the day had a bit of a problem with the furries shitposting the hell out of the place. This was countered with Warhammer and Battletech (to a lesser degree) counter-posting to hit posting limits and suchlike. Some of the early /b/ art still shows the early memes and warhammer characters killing furries and Battletech Mechs doing much the same.
Coupled with this, you had fairly consistent Warhammer threads on /b/ because... well, there was no where else to go. Warhammer Wednesdays in particular became very common. Moot, in his debatable wisdom created /tg/ in response to this and a shitload of people asking why there wasn't an actual board for this sort of thing.

There is more history to it, but that's the general gist of it. Was /tg/ created as a containment board for Warhammer? Yes and no. But Warhammer and Battletech were a popular force on /b/ pre-/tg/ days.

I feel like it's a weird combination of the fact that Warhammer is a blockbuster of concepts and ideas, and for all the contrarianposting by people who want to feel smug, is actually a damn well made fiction setting, with a solid amount of depth and spread, while also being digestible to anyone.
It markets itself as bleak grimdark horror, but it always had room for win, lols, and kino.
And the fact that a lot of pre-primaris hobbyists, who remember most fondly the times where it was more based than now, remember a time when 40k was not nearly as mainstream.

40k, and Warhammer Fantasy, was kino, but also wasn't common, so going on an assburger expose about the obscure setting wasn't unreasonable.
And that set the tone for the community.

But now, because it's been up-marketed, made well known, and in the process had the best bits stripped out (because too much adult stuff means you can't market it anywhere you might find children, and children are a big money market themselves), GW's product is neither (as) kino, nor unknown. It's also even more easily digested.

So you've got a community of people who're hooked on the deep lore and setting (because that's left alone because fundamentally that's what draws people in, even if it's not marketable), who've normalized autistically rambling about the setting (which is known to exist) and the minute lore (regardless of if it's good or not as a standalone), to others.

However others not in the hobby; know what the setting is in brief, don't know the older stuff that's actually kino, and are putting up with someone with poor social skills dumping lore on them that, even if they know how to parse it, is likely to be new Black Library material, and thus, Star Wars quality plus ADB's daddy issues.


It's also partially why I have so much fun seeing people who like 40k take a look at TC and go "no no they've done Grimdark wrong. Why does it have to be so dark/they forgot the funny bits/they've tried too hard."

Medieval, absolutely, but I've always interpreted their aesthetic as a varied mix of 1600-1920s Europe, a heaping tablespoon of Rome, and a pinch of the middle-ages, with varying of other Euro-Asian cultures dashed in depending on sub-faction.
I've always seen this as a deliberate action on the part of GW, as Nazis were omnipresent in media as the de-facto bad guys for a very long time, they were old hat.
