Awww shit it's the black knight, and he's challenging the party's Fighter to a one-on-one duel! Do you accept combat-by-champion?On a more serious note, I do like doing this occasionally to give a specific party member a chance to shine. Usually I space it out over campaign, so the rogue has a chance to do a heist, the Wizard gets to do esoteric magic shit, the Cleric gets to use his divine authority to work a miracle. It might be a bit of a cliche, but it's also fun.
>>98072405What game?
>>98072405I just plagiarize and reskin a bunch of shit in my stories but it's fun. I'm surprised at how often it goes unnoticed, and when they do the players don't ever seem to care as long as they're having fun
>>98072405Depends on the players. It works well if the players are willing to spectate and cheer while the specific party member shines. If you have a "LOOK AT ME" narcassist in the group though, it can be a pain, as they will either jump in as well, disrail it or get bored and quit.
>>98072405Why's he gotta be black?
>>98072590Just following Arthurian legend
>>98072405A smart party would just gang up on the knight and beat the shit out of him. No point letting your enemy set the terms of the engagement.
>>98072405The party's Bretonnian knight-errant fought a duel with a fellow knight of his kingdom who had been cursed with undeath, he wanted to be destroyed chivalrously.
>>98072405Why the fuck would our party have a Fighter? Martials suck dick in modern D&D and only retards play them.
>>98073117>Playing new dndWhy would you play that when there are infinite better options
>>98072590To appeal to American redditors.
>>98074414I'm not OP, so I wouldn't know.
>>98073117because D&D is about fun not peak min maxing optimization
>>98072405>had a rival merc company in town>start bantering with their leader to intensify said rivalry>indicate I'm down to start a duel>DM gets evil grin and says "Hah, okay" >slowly wittle down each other's hp taking up a ton of time I didn't mean to do for the rest of the party>the dude I dueled wasn't on par with me at all but was instead boss-tier and it was just an excuse for the dm to beat me up with his statblock>character gets humiliated and I never tried anything like it again
>>98072405>Awww shit it's the black knight, and he's challenging the party's Fighter to a one-on-one duel! Do you accept combat-by-champion?Ya-hah! Avast, yee hooligans! For it is I, Prince Dagomir the Fifth, a 4th level Fighter, the mightiest of classes, with the deadliest of skills! I have tamed the mighty griffon with my steel, subdued the treachorous ogre of Mog-bire swamp, and defeated countless goblins, and even a few orcs along the way in my journeys! I have killed giant rats in old Gertrudes basement, bested highwaymen on my way to Parthoria, and even brought a bard to sing of my accomplishments in thy local tavern of fair maiden wenches! Of course they loved me, as all wench-folk tend to lovest thou, coveting thy mighty Strength rating of 14! Truly no man in the land can bring such coiled muscle to bare! The lord of the local kingdom holds me in highest esteem, even beyond his meager knights and even beyond is closest confidant, the Seer of Grachenspielenbergen. I hold no equals in the realm of mutual combat, you can be sure, for I have traveled the lands and nay come upon such a rapscallion as to tarnish my reputation, each one falling before my blade, or my wit. You stand no chance against my charms, bravado, or training! Give up now, or I shall end you, and make you hope that I end things quickly! What-say-you, brigand?
>>98072405A scratch!? Your arm's off!
>>98072405One really good way to give every party member "a chance to shine" is to run an actual game for everyone, and one that everyone wants to play, and doesn't have such a wide power gap between its character options. Their cooperation will allow them to shine in all sorts of cool ways.
>>98072913>ahh hell naught
>>98073117>combat>cleric rolls shitty on his damage roll for the spell he cast>sorcerer misses his spell entirely>wizard uses his turn to cast Mage Armor on himself>fighter hits three times for consistent damage then action surges and hits an additional two times, one of which is criticalbut i'm sure you have the time of your life rolling 13 +4 on an investigation roll to be told "this key looks like it probably fits the lock on the door you came across earlier"
>>98075226You should play with my ex-DM; he loved casters and loved to make my fighter's attacks either miss completely or have reduced effect. He always cranked up the AC of the enemies and gave them bullshit abilities like ignoring the first instance of damage per round (I usually rolled high on initiative).
>>98075226why exactly would you be casting mage armor in-combat
>>98072433only D&D and its ilk have "Fighters"
>>98072405I like to do this when it is a fight the fighter could, but would be unlikely to win. Especially if the fighter is chivalrous. Does the character risk death for their values, or play smart for the greater good? Its a basic dilemma, but it is a double entendre because it is tempting for the player to take the duel just because it is cool despite risk if character death.
>>98075276Jesus Christ your ex DM sounds like a faggot. Is he by any chance the same DM as the anon that says he bans martials cause they are boring despite casters being very squishy?
>>98073061The knight has a larger army and trial by combat is preferable than fighting outnumbered 500 to 1.
>>98075680Hint, that previous DM did not exist. He does not have any games.
>>98075680He doesn't outright ban things, unless they aren't in D&D Beyond.
