Welcome to /wbg/, the official thread for the discussion of in-progress settings for traditional games. Here is where you go to present and develop the details of your worlds such as lore, factions, magic and ecosystems. You can also post maps for your settings, as well as any relevant art (either created by you or used as inspiration for your work). Please remember that dialogue is what keeps the thread alive, so don't be afraid of giving someone feedback or post whatever relevant input you might have!Last thread: >>98026956Thread Question: What original or exotic weapons exist in the world you are currently working on?What inspired you to create them?

>>98091157>Blades and spikes on shoulder stocks.Retarded artist, or just bad AI?
>>98091204It's concept art from some obscure game. So human made art that is for vibes rather than practicality.
>>98091204Looks like it's concept art from Nosgoth for cut content, but the actual model in game does have a weapon on the stock. So probably drawn to spec. So retarded design lead.
>>98091221I like cool designs and extra details on fantasy guns and all, but they're still guns, and need some practicality and function too. its like big huge impractical swords, yeah its awesome I get it. But it stops being cool when the design means that swinging it will probably maim you.
>>98091204>>98091234Also I don't think they are meant to be shoulder stocks. I think they are more similar to mare's leg style handles (top of the image) only with spikes on the end. You don't shoulder such weapons. Not saying the spikes are a good idea, but still.
>>98091157I could almost see the point of weapons on stocks if these were some kind of low-powered hand cannon, but what the fuck? You're going to cut your own shoulder to shoot the triplbarrel or deal with some serious recoil with the eagle and morningstar guns. And what's with the blood on the fang one? Is it meant to be stabbed into your flesh before you shoot? Is it for undead characters?
>>98091242That's what I assume for 2 and 4, but there's no way 1 is a mare's leg.
>>98091246see>>98091242I don't think you shoulder them at all.
>>98091181Tell me more of these "grappling hook gauntlets"How do they work, both in universe and in game mechanics?
>>98091377There's no actual mechanics to them (I have no game, this is just worldbuilding at the moment) but basically, there's a length of chain and a winch connecting a grappling hook to a gauntlet. The wearer can shoot the hook out, and either pull themselves towards something or pull something to themselves.Kind of like the hookshot from LoZ, except integrated into armor.
>>98091157While all humans possess psionic ability, to actualize it's use requires technology and tools to extend it's effects beyond ones own body hence the creation of Foci.1st generation Foci required invasive surgery to connect them to the user's nervous system bridging the connection between the user and the Veil Organoids inside of the Foci. Over time, Gen 1.5 variants only required skin contact at the cost of lowered power efficiency and gen 2 varients involved bio-prosthetics where the components of the Foci are built directly into the limb. All three versions still see common use
>>98091546Extremely cool.
Centralia is a lame name for a large and important region of my setting and calling the inhabitants Centralians is clunky. I have Marians of the Mar mountains (eventually to become the Mar empire) to the north The mega city of Sol, and the Solarans to the south. But need a good name for the vast range of city states that once made up the magedoms that are between the two. Might also make a smaller granite mountain range called Gran to the east. Probably south east.
>>98091157I wouldn't say original but I do have a sword spear I like using when allowed. I made or copy from a few other IPs and other people ideas for my current one. Basically a metal walking stick/mace that can combine with a sword to make a spear. Got the idea of Hellboy 2 though after seeing another design with splitting the staff and blade parts from someone's art work. Often do it like that over a sword that has a magical extending handle.
>>98092290>But need a good name for the vast range of city states that once made up the magedoms that are between the two.Since it's in the middle, why not Axis or Fulcrum?
>>98091204its usually just retarded artistive seen gobs of archers shooting from the wrong side of the bow or having their quivers on the wrong side of their backart students are overwhelmingly leftist and leftists dont know shit about weapons
>>98091157>What original or exotic weapons exist in the world you are currently working on?>What inspired you to create them?Original as in I came up with it? None, that I can think of. I did come up with a few "original" weapons for my 3.5 house rules/setting that didnt otherwise exist in the rules.>poleaxe>rondel dagger>new sizes for hammers, flails, a few other things>one-handed combo weapons (axehammer, hammerpick, pickaxe)>a new falchion (its just a slightly-nerfed courtblade)
>>98092290maybe dont have a name, except for perhaps the name of the continent/landmass.if theyre city states, you can go with the "free cities" of name-of-continent.each city would of course have a name and the inhabitants named after it.Kul and KulliansMerintes and Merintiansor Bumfuck and Bumfuckers>>98092948>a sword that has a magical extending handlethats kinda cool honestly, gonna steal that for my "weapons i think are cool" list.
>>98091157>TQi dont think they are terribly original but here are a few i think are at least unique in their fluff.A two handed hammer/mace that is a block of corundum where roots have grown around it, locking it in place, with the rest of the wood/tree serving as a handle.A sword carved from wood that has been petrified, turning it into a stone sword.A three headed steel flail with heads resembling a lion, goat and snake.A polished ebony staff topped with a polished amber orb containing the remains of one of the elusive fairies.A broken sentient sword that can recall its old shape in the form of a spectral blade.A flail forged from the metal of a meteorite, leaves a trail of flames as it swings.as for inspiration, that can come from pretty much anywhere.a recent one is the game Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.
>>98091546Gen 1.5 variants are the most common for medical and industrial/scientific roles used in conjunction with non-combat uses of Physical Empathy and telekinesis.Gen 2 is often used for specialist applications of powers and tailored as such. The only known individuals who are capable of expressing such powers without the need of Foci are [redacted] who will often keep fake Foci to hide their abilities.
>>98093461Twelve links next time, you subhuman faggot.
>>98093467>Huehue pisscorder calling anyone a subhumanKek
>>98091157>What original or exotic weapons exist in the world you are currently working on?Slings are not unique to my world but are prominent; bows do exist and some of the closed ruins have very complicated crossbows from ages past. The bronze age nations can't maintain them or create new ones. Sap-based explosives are a thing but the sap is magical anyway, and is a key ingredient in imbuing powers of any kind to a portion, lotion or salve. The high culture of the region has magical staffs that can be used to generate bubbles of an elemental power and propel them forward as a weapon. Same technology is used to give energy to their cities and vehicles; flying triremes with some aerodynamics and extra sails. Rowing is not as vital as it was for the real ships.
>>98091160>>98091191Kys d*scord cancer.
Ah, so this thread had too many anons having fun too. Somebody decided to put the bots out. >Who let the bots out? >WHO, WHO, WHO~
>>98091157>TQNot particularly original, but still:>Shock lanceAn energy rifle that fires bolts of electricity. Enough to disable electronics, but not permanently damage organics.Serves to knock out vehicles, robotics, and the occasional troublemaker.Rare, both the scavenged, and the newly-built pieces, given to city guards protecting key areas like city gates, palace entrance, etc.>HackerA piece of old E-WAR tech, a limited-use remote hacking device. Analyzes and safely shuts down anything more complex than a hammer.Ironically, the less complex something is, the longer it takes to disable. Originally used to capture equipment for allied forces. Not a gun per se, but I need to something to pad this list with, dear friend please understand.>ShockbowBasically, a scrap crossbow modified to fire taser-like bolts. Doubles as a grappling device if bolts have a cable attached.Much more common than shock lances, a simple and mostly-reliable staple of anti-vehicle and anti-robotics combat.Setting's based around salvaging old and likely alien-made tech, preferably intact.tl;dr old good and stood the test of time and elements, new unreliable and may blow up in hand.Keeping old shit working is a paramount, so people try to disable stuff, rather than destroying it, if they can help it.There's also a vast number of robotic "wildlife" roaming about, some of which could be security systems…or harvest drones for processing organics into biomechanical parts for automated robot factories, or chemical supply for fuel production.Being able to knock something like that out without much damage lets you salvage most of it's components and scrap the rest for materials. This, among other things, makes "robot hunting" a respectable and important occupation.>>98094742Well, at least they're getting shitcanned, for once.
>>98094860is it horizon inspired? whats the aesthetic? are you making it for a game or a novel?
How do you rationalize the need for skilled humans in a post AI world?
>>98095710Strongly depends on the kind of AI and how capable it is. Most AI is extremely limited in what it can competently do and lacks the means to even interact with most things in the real world. There is a huge gap between simple algorithmic scrips and god like all powerful super AI. In that huge gap there is still a vital need for humans for most if not all things to get done. tl;dr : don't make your AI literally a god and you will be fine.
>>98095710The AIs are also Human and don't have unlimited access to every and all systems.
>>98095868>>98095871Human level AI with the added benefit of faster processing speed due to an electronic substrate, as opposed to a biological one, and a programmable, inferfaceable mind.
>>98096047Are they terminal locked or do they have "bodies"?In other words are they programs or are they android robots? Is each instance a individual or is this AI centralized. In other words does the AI act more like individual persons, a hive mind, or more of a abstract system that isn't person like at all despite having human level intelligence (however that is measured).
On the Northeast part of the continent lies the territory of the Witches of Kaligo. Their border is marked by the 13 Towers (One Tower at the center, the 13th, the other 12 disposed on a perfect circle, like a clock. 11 actually since the 6th tower is no more). Each one of the 11th remaining Towers is ruled by the Matrimagus, a woman of great magical skill, force of will and political cunning. While the lower sections of the human societies that reside in cities at the base of the towers and deep on their territories are more equalitarian, Kaligo is a strong matriarchal society, with each Tower and it's family protecting their territory from outsiders with strength, and an infighting of politics, presided by the 13th Tower, home of the Great Archimage, who acts as mediator and leader of Kaligo as a whole, despite each Tower being fairly independent. Magical power in this world may come from various sources, but the Witches, blessed by Kaligo Herself, the Goddess that is Three, have in their blood such potency, making their society a great eugenist experiment. While woman are raised to be Witches of great magical prowess, the man of the nobility are raised to maintain peak physical condition and have administrative educations, for it will be their job to Sire the next generation of witches, and to keep their Towers as the women can dedicate themselves to the studying and mastering the arcane. The children of a female witch might not inherit their magical strength, but the children sired by a male member of the noble houses will always be born with magical powers (if a woman), or with the ability to sire the next generation of sorcerers if born male. Male, are strictly forbidden from from learning the arcane arts, and If found practicing it, they are sent to the 13th Tower never to be seen again Cont.
>>98096077Is this for a game or are you writing a book?
>>98095710Butlerian Jihad.
>>98096077The birth of a male to the Witches is of great importance, because the political alliances between the Towers are usually done under the trade, or rather, marriage, of one of their males into the other house. Children born out of incestuous relations have the Stigma of Kaligo, making them marked with a great power, but also a great madness, living in exile when they can escape or being killed when found out. Because of this, marriages are not only for political gain, but also a part of the Witches grand eugenist project to birth stronger and more powerful witches at each generation. Because of this the nobility of Kaligo has and average of 1 male to every 20 or something females. While as stated before, the "common folk" live more equalitarian lives, the nobility adders to strict decorum. If someone with magical potency is found among the common folk (be it either a woman of arcane prowess, or a man who is discovered to be able to sire witches) they tend to be integrated into the nobility, as a way to diversify the gene pool of each Tower. The naming convention go as Mother Family Name - Person Name - Father Family name. So a girl named Vyla-Kanes-Sirugal, is the child of a woman from the Vyla Family, and a father of the Sirugal Family. Kaligo magic is deeply rooted on their ancestry, with The Towers themselves serving as Places of Powers to Witches of their respective family, and the magical artifacts made by the Witches usually carry a piece of them, hair and blood on most cases, but it's not uncommon to find out artifacts made with body parts of deceased relatives, be them either male or female.
>>98096070AI can be housed in around a 25x25x25 (cm) volume not including power.Of course, it's not necessarily a yes/no type thing. Meaning the level of the AI is no a spectrum, where you could have lower volume/power/cooling requirements for lower level AI.You could also have multiple AI working together as something resembling a hive mind. The main limits I've put are these:1) You can't just scale up AI, at a certain point the intelligence fragments and collapses. From an outside perspective, this is a hard law.2) No super-intelligence. This means, no cognitive mode that is absolutely beyond human cognition.
>>98096115This just avoid the issue by just outlawing AI and keeping the world in a pre AI state.>>98096070>In other words does the AI act more like individual persons, a hive mind, or more of a abstract system that isn't person like at all despite having human level intelligence (however that is measured). All of the above exist in some form. The main thing is that the accepted truth is that AI doesn't have true consciousness, no matter how closely it may resemble it.
>>98096118The male noble is not married to any particular witch, instead he can be made to sire children with any female noble (not his choice) that choose so under the approval of the Matrimagus (there are instances where such pairing occurs without the permission of the Matrimagus, meaning that she can either choose to punish both of the culprits, in some cases exiling or executing the infracting witch). If the male noble is found to be too unruly or useless beyond his reproductive capacity, the Witches might choose to "simplify him", turning such men in lobotomized being only able to follow simple orders. Noble males that lived beyond their virile years might be kept around as Tower Keepers, teachers of more mundane subjects, caretakers to children and trainers for the young men of the family, if proven useful. By the age of 18 (for legal reasons), the usual for the boys to compete in sports and trials to showcase their health and intellect, with higher ranking athletes having more value in the marriage market of the witches. Girls are trained early into most basic forms of sorcery, until the year they compete 13 years. The family in question will make a ritual properly welcoming the girl into the arcane. Once a year, during the Summer Solstice, there is a grand ceremony at the 13th Tower, with all the girls that completed 13 years between participate, while watched by the adult woman of their families. They are brought to face the Great Archimage, or simply called the Great One, are are made to dive into the Pool Of Our Lady, a magical pool of water. The particulars of each dive are a mastery, but the girl have to come back accompanied by a Familiar, a magical spirit "given" by Kaligo. The ones that fail are shunned and shamed, sometimes being exiled, sometimes being relegated to less prestigious positions on the family. Maybe when they are older they can attempt to birth the next generation. Cont.
>>98096157While the Wtiches protect their overall borders against possible outside threats (Like the swarms of elves or the roving bands of Beast Nobles), the Followers of Kaligo fight another more intimate battle against apostates and heretical witches, those who are away from Kaligo grace.Wild Witches (Dryads) are woman who forgone all civility, ignoring Kaligo's teaching, taking their own blood as mates and consorting with beings of the Second World. Dryads usually operate in Covens, groups of exiled witches, criminals or common woman that awakened their power. Covens tend to be more equalitarian, being made and unmade as necessity arrives. Another common organization for such witches are the Triads, lead by an older Witch, The Hag or Crone, a woman that dealt so much in forbidden arts that can't be properly considered a human anymore, followed by the Mother, a skilled witch of heir own merits being tutored by the Hag, and a maiden, a younger witch, many times kidnapped and made to serve the other too. When the Hag passes away, by dying or by properly ascending her mortal coil, the Mother takes the place of the Hag, the Maiden of the Mother and another maiden is brought into the group, via manipulation and convincing or straight up kidnapping. Sea Witches (Sirens). Are exiled and escaped witches that abandoned civility, living isolated or within flocks either on secret islands along the costs or high upon the mountains of the Northern Boarder. Sirens live in small flocks that can vary by number, often with the strongest witch being the leader. Sirens are mutated being, being barely human for most part. They usally raid the towns and villages belonging to Kaligo in search of magically attuned males, who they will forcefully copulate and then cannibalize. Cont.
>>98096188Magically attuned men are a frequent target for wild witches, being sometimes kidnapped by force, coerced into compliance or even mind controlled via strange dreams. Since the teaching of the Magical Arts is forbidden to men, leaving them exposed to more esoteric forms of attack, unless they have a female relative trained in such arts to protect them.Travelers that wish to visit or have business within Kaligo territory must know about heir costumes and way of life. While the common folk is almost the same as everywhere else, dealing with the nobility is another whole matter. While the Witches might tolerate the presence of foreigner Male Mages, it is strongly advised that they keep their practice to a minimum, in order to escape their punishment. Male Magical users born within their society might try to keep their powers hidden or practice them in secret. Many of them escape the towers and find refugee among the Covens, or in rare cases, the Sirens.
>>98096092Book, probably never going to finish it, but maybe someone with more talent and dedication than I finds it and uses the idea.
>>98094890>is it horizon inspired?Nope. If anything, it's closer to Kenshi.Took a bit from various sources, actually.Preference for simpler reliable tech, or super-advanced still-holding-together stuff from SWN.A higher-than-average eccentricity of denizens and weapons cobbled together from mismatching parts from Borderlands.Failed terraforming and everyone's extraterrestrial origin, as well as some old weird high-tech, mildly inspired by Trigun and a number of other old anime titles.>what's the aesthetic?A "slightly middle-eastern scrap heap" aesthetic, with lots of idiosyncrasies, owing to a dozen space-faring civilizations that fought over the planet several centuries prior. There's automated factories still churning out stuff, rogue bots prowling about, people building stuff out of components they don't quite understand beyond their basic functions.I.e. one of the commonly-used vehicles would be a large monowheel. Energy cells that power stuff are organic inside, and don't so much run out as their organic core gets worn out. There's a bit of stuff here that either relies on the rule of cool to function, or is there because I think it's cool.>are you making it for a game or a novel?Yes — it's the latter, but I realized it can be adapted to the former rather well, which is why I braved my anxiety and posted here.I still remember a post sometime ago, where anon mocked people who didn't have their own setting to run their games in by the time they were 30.I looked at this thread's theme and realized that I DID have a one banging around in my head for some time now.
>>98091157TQ for the Witches of Kaligo, the whole continent has more stuff but I'm content with them RN.>WeaponsCertain materials might be used to make magical swords, lances and the like. Usually by making them with magical-reactive materials such as silver (magic dampener), gold (magical enhancer) or dumb iron (cold iron, pure iron) that is lethal to fae related creatures, the Witches make their weapons, staffs, wands, daggers, and such by attaching strands of hair, drops of blood or in some cases, using flesh, skin and bone to make them. Such items are deeply attuned to the Second World, and Witches.Only people that share a blood relations with the crafter of such items might be able to use it (with efficiency declining the furthest the blood relation god). Witches that dedicated to combat usually make use of a Staff with their family magic imbued, this is a powerful weapon for grand and less refined spells, a wand for less powerful but more intricate sorcery and a sword, spear or dagger depend on the individual witch fight style.Open wars among the towers is rare, so internal conflicts are mostly resolved with wand duels to minimize casualties and overall damage. Males often carry magically enhanced swords, that given their physical training and affinity to the magical implement makes them scary swordsman.
