>Favorite house rules and/or rule stolen from another system or edition?I've experimented with removing "0 hp is unconscious" and turned it into some sort of darkest dungeon style death's door. You can act and take turns normally, but everything you do is at disadvantage (and enemies have advantage against your saves). You'll never bleed out, but any successful hit against you triggers a save vs death (getting harder and harder after every bit of damage). And you move half speed. It worked pretty well in Sunless Citadel. A player got gutted by a hobgoblin crit, but managed to avoid death (some goblins missed him) and disengaged to another room and played smart by throwing all the daggers he'd been looting (and then some rocks after)Probably wouldn't work at high levels. But my players liked it

The night elves don't join the Horde, but they don't join the Alliance either. The forsaken are simply another faction like the scourge, the Scarlet Crusade, Amani trolls, etc.
D&D 5e 2024's backward compatibility is pretty damn weird, because RAW it allows some strange things with Custom Lineage and feats that don't have level prerequisites, like getting Gift of the Chromatic Dragon or Eldritch Adept (from TCE) as early as level 1.Or, if you're a martial character like a fighter, you can end up with two Fighting Styles at level 1

>>98163743I love backstories, I'd try to get more info from the DM on the world lore or the starting scenario (i.e. prison, tavern, etc). However, it is possible to make a flexible backstory so your DM can simply put it in or make minor adjustments. If your character is starting as a Psi Warrior, I'm assuming you're starting at level 3.The first thing to consider is why is your character adventuring now and then how did your character learn their class skills? The easiest motivation is revenge. Your PC's mentor/parent was killed, they're out to get revenge.I find that Octopath Traveler is good for using to make DnD character backstories. For this, I'm going to steal from Throne.>PC was part of an assassin group that are trained from birth to use psionics to kill targets discreetly >PC sees the reaction of a target's loved one and gains some empathy>PC wants to give up life of murder and live in peace >PC seeks to fight off the organization and claim their freedomNPCs can include former close allies and it should fit so long as your DM's world has some sort of assassin guild.
>>98163818How much adventuring do you actually do in a dungeon, compared to the wide world?Been thinking up a few adventures and realised a lot of it was "outdoors" and not doing the Dungeon part of D&D - how much "dungeon" (constrained environment) exploration is needed / messes up if it's not there?

Can a three--player party work if one of the PCs is a fairly standard Warlock and the other is a fairly standard Wizard?Or is the party composition already too skewed in the direction of squishy arcane spellcasters that a third complementary character couldn't possibly salvage the situation?
>>98168066A three-party group works, but people have to work as a team. combat can be swingy; people need to earn their keep, and CC is a premium
>>98168066It seems like it'd be fine. You'd mostly be accepting that the party wants to engage at a range and keep it that way. There are plenty of classes that could fill in the last spot well enough to round things out.

>>98168146my next character im playing is a dwarf w/ tough, probably barbarian because i love them.
>>98168130My instinct would probably be Cleric/Druid. Gets more control spells to keep enemies at bay, but are also more durable and good for keeping the other two alive. I could also see a decent case for Ranger. Make the most of the Wizard's control spells by focusing fire alongside the Warlock, along with getting some of the helpful Druid spells.Alternatively, go Bard or Sorcerer, and then have a full trio of squishy arcane casters. Could be a fun way to give the party a theme.
What would be a good generic name for a fighting style focused on daggers?
>>98168294steb
>>98168294Surprisedly, there's nothing in 5E to support a knife throwing character well.Best would be using Artificer to make returning daggers or the DM giving you a returning dagger. Soulknife is the closest, but nothing for a barrage of knives or non psychic knives. As for your question, you can call it Bloody Style or something of the like.
>>98168332>archery / thrown weapon fighting>dualist (technically) >updated mechanic for drawing and stowing weapons designed that you draw and throw part of the same attack to make it easier>magic items for returning daggers (ebberon but still)>nick for extra attacks (dagger btw)
>>98168332That would be the purpose of creating the fighting style.Being the giant faggot that I am, I was inspired by Destiny 2's Gunslinger where they have some unique abilities involving knives
>>98168360The issue is simply being able to throw lots of daggers. The fighting styles don't let make your daggers return. Only way without the DM giving you a magic dagger is to use Artificer to make one.The fantasy of specifically knife throwing is to be able to throw a flurry of knives. Simply carrying a ton can work, but would be expensive and encumbrance might come for you.>>98168364Yea, it's odd that there isn't a subclass built for it. Although they built one for Barbarian throwing strength weapons. A knife throwing subclass would mesh well with Fighter as Action Surge lets you throw even more knives. That an no element specific class/subclass.
Is it possible to play a character who has decided to give up all possessions and wander the earth without it being a huge pain in the ass? Basically Diogenes but without being a smug asshole about everything.I'm currently trying to flesh out a monk that will be a backup character, but I've only ever played one other character before so I don't have a lot of experience with anything other than basic bitch human fighter.
>>98168294I'd call it 'Knife's Edge' or something, assuming it's specifically daggers and only daggers. Not the most evocative, but it does cleanly communicate that it's knife-specific.
>>98168402It seems a waste to make it a class/subclass specific. The idea i'm running in my mind is that it fits the character or Rogues and Rangers in the same way a two weapon focused fighting style would fight Barbarians and Paladins and in all instances the fighter can use any of these. And now that I've posted Destiny art I will continue to do so and how I imagine a Paladin using a big two handed weapon instead of just a boring sword and board set up.>>98168410It is suppose to be generic so it's as good as anything else
>>98168407It depends on how annoying you are about it, how much the rest of the party is on board, and how generous the GM is.Just at a basic level, the other players are probably fine if you want to give up your share of treasure in exchange for them ensuring that you don't starve to death. But then there's also some friction that occurs when the party wants to just stay at a inn, but your character insists on sleeping outside because a bed and a roof is too much of a luxury. Or the party has to meet with a noble, and they either have to convince your character to take a bath and put on some nicer clothes, or just insist you stay outside rather than explain why they brought along a homeless man. This gets compounded with magic items. If the party finds a magic quarterstaff or some magic robes and decides that your Monk is the best one to use them to help the party's overall survival, then you're probably going to end up wearing a village's worth of wealth on your back out of pure pragmatism.
how is this for a backstory for a fighter who ends up going down the psi warrior route? I'm going to roleplay the psionic awakening as him having some sort of realization of what peoples souls are from decades of observing them, when he attacks, he knows where to cut in impossible and unexplainable way that psychic damage is done (i still don't understand wtf psychic dmg is) plus he has wilder blood in him but he doesn't know it.I thought about spinning the psionic attacks with the vicious mockery shit, where he insults victim at a deeply personal level as he slices with the blade.>He’s polite, he’s proper, but within the humble head of the Concierge of Maeghoun’s Inn, something inside is starting to fray. Blaise Dren needs a break. Too many years of keeping secrets and peering into the lives of men and women who pass through the dark wood paneling of the opulent hotel has had an effect. When an old friend disappears, he sees a great opportunity to take a few days off the job, travel the road and put his mind to other matters.
>>98168722That works, your character has a clear goal. I would still ask where his combat ability comes from.Still gonna plug myself again tho. >>98165274

Not even one good villain.Earlier editions dropped: Strahd, Acerak, Vecna, Tiamat, I bet more people ITT could name the random fucking red dragon demigod than ANYTHING from 5e.What went wrong? I feel like WoTC can only play cover songs. They’ve forgotten how to compose
>>98168746Combat ability source leaves me scratching my head honestly, this is meant to be a city man who lives amongst luxury in a servantile role. We are starting at level 1 but I know that the weapon masteries will have to come from somewhere. Maybe the missing friend taught him a bit about swordfighting or something.
>>98168816We live in a really shit time where cooperations view remakes as the safe and easy way to make money, this ethos has bled into every tiny little corner of the entertainment industry.basically yes they're fucking pussies
>>98168816Auril was briefly mentioned in icewind dale (the video game) but was the focus of the adventure book, but also the only notable new character in the last like several RA Salvatore books was Drizzt's daughter, which isn't very radical desu. most characters in the forgotten realms are far too established at the moment. We got a few new ones from Larian w/ bg3 characters - most becoming canon now, but most adventures rehashed a lot of the same old same old and hardly delved too far from the majors. Like we've got an adventure to hell, but those are all the same people we've been seeing since near the start. i'm sure there's a few other characters that everyone knows like gundren rockseeker, but only because he's the intro guy who hired the players.
>>98168407>>98168520Stupid shit I made a few months back specifically for a character like this, I think your total wealth (5 gold coisn and every item listed) was like 18 gp or something.Show it to your MD if you like it
>>98168520Oh he won't be a bum who is dirty and stinks, it's more like a Buddhism style "release from desire/attachments". Basically the idea that desire causes yearning, and yearning causes suffering, so if you eliminate desire you will be closer to enlightenment. It's not "I refuse to own anything" so much as every possession is "easy come, easy go". Find a cool staff? Great, might use it for a while, might sell it and give the money toward the party's expenses, might give it away to a stranger they come across, might leave it leaning against the wall of a dungeon. It's just an object. My first character is a human fighter who has been collecting some pretty nice gear/magical items over the course of our game, and there was a time or two where I was verrrrry close to dying (usually because I did something stupid). I was thinking about how super bummed out I would be if my character died and I lost all my shit, so when the DM mentioned that everyone should have a backup character ready just in case I decided that it might be fund to do a complete 180. Kinda meta I guess. My group doesn't really track rations/water, but as an example this character would have the outlook that wherever they go, "the universe tends to provide". If he is traveling and hasn't eaten in a while the universe may provide a fruit tree along his path, or it may provide a short term traveling partner who is happy to share a meal in exchange for a story, or it may even provide a roadside vegetable stand with an easily distracted vendor. It may take an hour, it may take a day, but some how, some way, the universe (usually) provides. As for items I'm going to focus on unarmed attacks, so hopefully that will reduce the odds of a scenario like you described. Mainly I'm just curious about what sorts of problems this might cause for the party and DM.
>>98168927>As for items I'm going to focus on unarmed attacks, so hopefully that will reduce the odds of a scenario like you described. There are magic items that specifically improve unarmed attacks. Which is why I mentioned that it depends on how generous the GM is. If magic items are scarce, then it's barely going to matter anyway. If the entire party is decked out like a Christmas tree, then your character's going to be out of place if they're randomly leaving magical gear behind as a character quirk.

what if I just left cleric as-is but gave it more options for its "choose 1" features and CD
>Death Clerics get a free twinned spell on their necromancy cantrips>every turnHow can I maximally exploit this? It doesn't seem possible to cast multiple cantrips per turn via any means but action surge or Haste, nor does it seem possible to change a spell's school to Necromancy through any means to apply the feature to other cantrips. The best I can think of is multiclassing with Bladesinger to get one attack and one twinned cantrip per round, but maybe I'm overlooking some magic item or other classes' features or something.
>>98169511What are you looking for specifically? You could take a few notes from 3.5's Binder. The idea being that when you call on a vestiage you check to see how much of their influence is physically visible on you so if you fail those checks people who know what a Binder is could spot you 50 miles away.
>>98172520rules for talking with them, getting boons or informatiin from them, etc
>>98172324Would be much better, but not by a lot because your changes are extremely one-dimensional, unbalanced, and lack flavor.
>>98172503Illusionist's Bracers would be the most relevant magic item that comes to mind. I'm pretty sure you could also multiclass Sorcerer in order to get Quicken to cast multiple cantrips that way, although that's not exactly reliable.Bladesinger isn't a bad call if Toll the Dead is your Necromancy cantrip of choice, since then you can shoot an enemy and they're automatically missing HP to enable the damage boost.Though you also need to have the two enemies standing next to each other, which sort of limits how effective this can be.
>>98172547what do you mean by 1-dimensional in this context? not versatile enough?
>>98172572>healer>evil>armoredwhen every clerics can be all of those things
>>98172578In other words, encouraging specialization is the issue?
>>98172567>whenever you cast a cantrip, you can use a bonus action on the same turn to cast that cantrip a second timeOh that's very nice. High rarity, but still.Imagine Quickened Toll the Dead with the bracers on a pair of targets, potentially 8d12 of damage in a single turn at just the cost of a couple sorcery points.>Though you also need to have the two enemies standing next to each otherThat happens often enough to make the feature well worthwhile, in my experience.
>>98172591clerics have specialization already in order; heavy armor or cantrtips and skills, then we have a subclass, and finally spells.
>>98172642In other words, dont put an already versatile class in a box.
>>98172612By the wording, I don't think you can stack the Illusionist's Bracers with a Quickened spell, since both eat up a Bonus Action. I suppose in the long run that makes Bladesinger the better option, though building an entire character around eventually getting a specific magic item is a little dubious. There's probably some 5.5e material that would further enable things, but I'm not sure if you don't lose more by no longer being able to just take 1 level in Cleric for the Death subclass.
>>98172669Ah, you're right. I got ahead of myself and neglected to actually reread Quickened Spell.>There's probably some 5.5e material that would further enable things, but I'm not sure if you don't lose more by no longer being able to just take 1 level in Cleric for the Death subclassI do know that Poison Spray is a Necromancy spell in 2024, for 1d12 damage on an attack roll, but a Wisdom save is probably statistically more likely to hit than an attack roll for most enemies, isn't it?
included a bunch of undead-fucking CDs since you guys so heavily emphasized fucking up Undead is central to the cleric's identity
>>98172977Eh, not always. Partly because it's a lot easier to get boosts to attack rolls than give enemies penalties to saves. That said, Poison Spray would have another advantage within 2024 if you were going Cleric+Sorcerer, which is that you could go Draconic in order to get a boost to the Poison damage. Though I think with this sort of character you'd want to pick up every Necromancy cantrip you could get your hands on either way, just to give yourself options if the situation demands.
>>98172990bury undead has weird gamey rules which don't follow any of the other game mechanics at this point. use more natural language for itcremate undead it is says it takes damage from 'burning' but burning isn't a damage type so this is nonsense.exorcise undead is weird because its a 4th level spell that targets just undead but doesnt require you to have the concentration on the effectmummify is weird as it both gives a debuff to a damage type - unlike all others - and restrains them without needing concentration again. --celebrant is absurdly good btwmendicant is pf2e and you dont get to use a shield - its like very hard to justify that over what they've currently got w/ medium armor (or heavy) oracle kind of blows because guidance is such a staple cantrip and you start with 3 - there's a lot of not great cantrips to start with so you're not getting too much here preacher is awful in comparison
>>98173181>>98173181Actually, "burning" is a codified word in 2024
>>98173181none of these require concentration because no channel divinity has it. Not even Turn Undead, which is nearly identical to a level 3 spell
>>98173255>Not even Turn Undead, which is nearly identical to a level 3 spellI hope you don't mean Fear, a spell that doesn't end on a creature just because it takes damage.
