This makes "Lovecraftian" MFs shit their pants
Asking again: anyone played Breathless? I'm thinking of trying it out but the sparse rules make me nervous. Tips (especially about action scenes) would be greatly appreciated.
>>98170794>Have you ever given a Cthulhu Mythos explanation to a more traditional gothic horror monster? The human soul is a high dimensional organ. The brain doesn't create consciousness but actually interface with this organ acting as anchor and regulator. When a human die the soul becomes detached and drift into the dreamlands, merging withs its torrents and becoming part of it. This is what's called the second death.Under ordinary circumstances, death severs the bond between body and soul. The higher-dimensional organ gradually withdraws from the material world, entering the Dreamlands permanently before eventually dissolving into its greater currentsA ghost is a soul that has failed to complete the transition into the Dreamlands.A powerful attachment may anchor the soul to the waking world, preventing its departure. Such anchors vary greatly:A beloved home.A treasured object. An unfinished duty.A profound injustice. An overwhelming emotion.A violent or unnatural death.Exposure to Mythos forces. The influence of a nearby Topos. When this occurs, the soul becomes trapped between worlds.Part of it remains within the Dreamlands, where it belongs. Another part remains entangled with physical reality, where it no longer belongs. The resulting tension produces what is commonly called a haunting.Ghosts are not immortal spirits, nor are they complete human beings. They are stranded remnants of once-living persons suspended in an impossible state. Every ghost is simultaneously present in two realities, yet fully at home in neither.

Did that anon making Cthulhu Tarot cards every get around to finishing all of them? I remember them posting their work but can't remember if they finished the set.
>>98174228I know they still post art on social media but not sure if they finished the whole set.
>>98172740>AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!!!!! THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO SUM TO 360°!!!!!
A somehow idle question.COC has one great thing about it: while is focuses on the twenties, its legacy is one of "consider other historical periods". I think it's alway neat to do that.HOWEVER! Did you even happen to think that a period zone could be cool, wanted to do something in it, but can't have a decent idea? I'm reading about Napoleon and I am in this situation.
>>98178061I had a slowly bubbling, forming idea that was entirely done by a DLC for Mafia 3. Weirdest shit playing through that I can tell you.
>>98178071Do tell. I did wonder about a organized crime scenario (in which the players are the criminals), but it never went anywhere.
>>98178490Setting is late 60s New Orleans (or equivalent). PCs are veterans coming back to a changed town. The setup is all about a cult who've set up shop in the city. Mysticism mingled with drugs, fanatical violence, links to bad old civil war era families and old money. The kind of case where you're digging through a spooky warehouse of Mardi Gras floats with a UV lamp to find trace evidence and find occult paint everywhere. Then a VW camper full of masked hippies wielding automatic weapons and Molotov cocktails turn up to kill you. The DLC is called Sign of the Times, I think. It's really very good.
>>98178061I've really wanted to do Colonial America as a setting, but don't have a specific idea for it yet. Plus, I would really want a setting book for it, whether official or fanmade.
I have a player character in my Horror on the Orient Express campaign who has more than 80+ Cthulhu Mythos. How should I help properly convey how fucked up his world view is now?
>>98179615To other in world characters/NPC or to the players. Seeing things other character can't is peak lovecraftian. Bloodborne trained players that the huge monsters were there the whole time, which is straight from lovecraft since the Necronomicon author Abdul Al-Hazred was torn apart in broad daylight in a marketplace by an invisible beast
>>98179137Colonial Gothic has lots of good resources for this kind of game.
>>98179137>I've really wanted to do Colonial America as a setting, but don't have a specific idea for it yet. Plus, I would really want a setting book for it, whether official or fanmade. You can use Witch Hunter, that includes Colonial America, XVIIth Europe and Hidden Realms (underworld, fairy realms and such).gf /d/s41Ta7
>>98179615How is he not insane yet? He has a 1/5 chance to succeed any given SAN check, and he needs to lose just... 4 SAN in a single day and he goes indefinitely insane, which means he then takes even MORE SAN loss.
>>98180627It was a recent thing that got him up to 80%. He’d mostly been in the 60s until recently. He’s a repeat PC from many different scenarios until we did Orient Express, and playing in those past ones enabled him to collect a bunch of Mythos tomes and read them in-between adventures. Then, there’s a moment in Orient Express where you can listen to an entity spouting Mythos knowledge, gaining 1D10 Cthulhu Mythos each time you listen to it speak, and he used that to go up to 80%. Also, you forget that once your CM exceeds your Sanity, you become Mythos Hardened and halve all Sanity loss.
>>98181011It halves sanity loss rounding up, so it's still a minimum of 1 every time. Also willingly going to 80% CM score is insane, he is a very brave(and foolish) man indeed. Most cult leaders don't have that. That's probabaly like, Abdul Alhazared tier.
I finally mergedThe HauntingCorbitt journal handoutChurch of Contemplation supplementMr. CorbittOf Wrath and Blood (The Haunted)Cat's CradleThe Hauntertimelines into a unified consistent timeline for my church of contemplation conspiracy campaignVery happy with the result
>>98179137I mean, HPL himself used it in Charles Dexter Ward, just to speak about the most known instance. Strong precedent. If anything I suppose it's somehow too "adventure" than usual yog-sothothery, but it already has almost everything the stereotypical Lovecraft country features. Maybe the problem is that it would be too similar to modern day?
>>98182707>too similar to modern dayI mean, if they can get away with Gaslight being a separate setting despite being only 30 years earlier than the main timeline (and Pulp by default takes place only 10 years after), I feel like there’s enough difference for Colonial America to work.
>>98182806I think I agree, tough not being a burger I'm not totally sure on what I would take as "diverging vibes" for a colonial setting specifically.
>>98182845It's about the isolation and the sense of danger being all around you.To the colonists, those ever-present woods just outside their colonies was the domain of devilry and witchcraft. Naked worshipers of the devil dancing around fires, luring Puritans away from the path of god. Except this time, it's not the devil.Plus, it would be cool to see Native American takes on the Mythos, both in opposition and in support of it.Check out pic related if you want a taste of what I'm talking about. Great movie.
I've never played coc, but I do like vampires, what's the coc Dracula book like?
>>98183013Gothic vampires are separated from mythos vampires.Mythos vampires are interdimensional aylmaos. There is no unified lore. The CoC 6e monster book have gothic vampires and they are stated as your traditional folklore vampires. They don't have mirror reflections, can't cross running water, etc.You could do your own lore making "gothic vampires" humans that are "cursed" by lovecraftian extradimensional entities. You could even take the old world of darkness lore and make them descendants of Cain, making Cain somebody that got tainted by mythos entities.
>>98182973Fantastic movie, but trying to do it in COC would be a disaster.
>>98183013It's not a Chaosium book, but something approved for the Miskatonic Repository. Dracula isn't technically a vampire in it. Rather, it portrays him as a really powerful worshiper of Shub-Niggurath who has a lot of powers that mimic a vampire. I picked it up cause it looked neat, though I have yet to utilize it.>>98183561I'm not saying to directly run The VVitch, just something with similar vibes.
>>98184565>I'm not saying to directly run The VVitch, just something with similar vibes.I got that, but that movie is all about paranoia from isolated characters not communicating with each other. Pretty difficult to do that with COC. Hell, difficult to do that with a party.I'd go out and say find other people really liking the movie, the idea of witches about that time and use Lovecraftesque, that's the only game I can think of.
>>98182806>I mean, if they can get away with Gaslight being a separate setting despite being only 30 years earlier than the main timelineBut those 30 years were the end of the Long XIXth century. The Long XIXth century goes from the French Revolution to World War I (125 years). Things could just keep going for decades without much change, and in then in a few years during Napoleon and the French Revolution, or in a few years around the WW1, everything changed.
>>98183013>I've never played coc, but I do like vampires, what's the coc Dracula book like?If you want Dracula, get Night Black Agents and the Dracula dossier, or Stokerverse, both of them really good.
>>98186072Yeah, and I’m saying colonial America is equally as much of a change that you can do a setting then. You’re in a time and place where Western civilization is in the minority. There’s gaps of untamed wilderness and Native American territory separating each small colony. Rather than living in a city of thousands of millions, you’re in a village of maybe a hundred people, and you don’t truly know what lies out there beyond your colony walls. Help from Europe is months away, and there’s nowhere safe you can flee to. The domain of the devil and witchcraft is just outside your doors, and who knows which of your neighbors it will lure in with its temptations of power and an easier life.
>>98178875>The DLC is called Sign of the Times, I think. It's really very good.>It's really very good.
>>98186777The base game was really repetitive without the DLC, but I thought the cult plotline was great and the locations very atmospheric. Plus throwing knives OP.Did you prefer the sundown town or something?
>>98183013I could see arguments for a lot of different shit. He could be a mythos sorcerer, he could he a shub worshipper, he could he a mask, he could be a yog-spawn... The sky's the limit.

Random lovecraft discussion but I feel like the renewed interest in the King in Yellow we see in american online horror (analog, minecraft analog other internet stuff) is standing on the toes of what Lovecraft intended for Nyarlathotep. Hastur/The yellow king has essentually replaced him as the evil elder god/great old one who is malacious and cruel and takes victims into interdimensional planes. As well as having different forms that are only connected to each other with their colouring as yellow. Also everyone know seems convinced Hastur/KiY has antlers like the modern idea of wendigos. I'm sure the rise in interest and love of wendigos as a modern monster played a part in the antlerfication of other monsters.
>>98191954It's literally just true detective. That's it, that's why the KiY is popular.
>>98191954What >>98192027 said. It's also where the antlers come from. That said, I'm not sure I agree Hastur is replacing Nyarlathotep. The difference between the two is that Nyarlathotep is an active evil. He seeks people out to fuck with them.Hastur, though? He doesn't mess with you unless you find him first. You have to hear his name, read his play, see the Yellow Sign or something first. But once he has a way in, then you're screwed. He worms his way into your mind and makes you obsessed, driving you crazier and crazier. But the first interaction is on you.
>>98192281Yeah, KiY stories and Nyarlathotep stories are usually fundamentally different, the way their cults operate are different, and the scenarios that use them are usually very different, not sure where >>98191954 got that.KiY's resurgent popularity also has to do with the fact that one of the most popular horror games on the market only has 2 published campaigns, and one them is a massive Carcosa thing.
>>98192281>>98191954>>98192308tangential to this but I always wanted to play a campaign that started with a mix of detective mystery and the expedition to skull island.A group of detectives start following the yellow sign, the are joined by a group of archeologist and anthropologists, they mount an expedition to an old rock formation guided by the yelow sign and they end up being transported to the od&d setting of Carcosa having to find they way back.

Tonight, I am actually going to have Cthulhu appear in a session of Call of Cthulhu for the first time. I've been running the game for 10+ years.I'll let you know if he eats any investigators.
>>98187976>>98196836I like this idea. Ancient civilizations finding the backrooms make it more interesting.
>>98194837This is missing the Deep Ones and Shoggoths.
What do you think about this realistic version of the hosts used by the Yithians from The Shadow Out of Time?https://x.com/AThrillosopher/status/1636970649439678465
>>98199250>realism>for an interdimensional space alien
>>98199250>realisticstopped reading there
>>98199250It looks infinitely less threatening than how it was described in the book
>>98199250That's lame as fuck.
>>98199250Why is it so lame? Why make it 'realistic' its an ancient alien race, who have mentally hijacked an entire another specie and can't switch consciousness regardless space and time, switching from an other world tens of millions of years in the past. They are one of the best and most alien looking of lovecraft beings. The Great Race of Yith are great
>>98199250Looks less capable of technological civilisation than the original; therefore, seems less realistic.
>>98199250Looks like a barnacle mixed with a lobster, without a visible way of moving. Meh.I think the GROY can have some spec-evo attached, but this is undewhelming. Kenneth Hite put forward the idea of them (well, their original earth hosts) being akin to Wiwaxia, which is a good start to me.
>>98199250This feels more like an ancestor to the hosts.
>>98201931That's actually not a bad idea. Could involve them in a scenario by having some surviving remnants of the ancestors being found and perhaps some Yithian agents trying to cover it up or something.
