>>98208661>TQi actually like stealing/cropping shit from the rulebooks. my fighter/rogue/cleric was literally just a shitty "totally not strahd btw" for years in that campaign
If you have physical books do you notate the books at all? Do you use tabs? If you do how do you use them? I just feel like I could organize my books a bit better but I never did anything like that in school.
>still no actual way to play a cool samurai, ninja, yamabushi or onmyoji in 5eThis edition failed the weebs.
>>98208661>TQWhen making a character, I have some idea of how I want them to look like so I need some way of getting that. Finding art doesn't quite cut it.I don't want to invest money in a character just for a game to be cut short, so I start out with AI and if the game goes on long enough, I look for an artist to commission. Although it takes a while for me to find an artist who's style I'll be happy with (at a reasonable price).
>>98208941amd that's a good thing
>>98208661I honestly think using AI for character portraits is whatever. If you used it for backstory, if the DM used it for text or for all images, I think it would be more annoying. But these days character portraits are probably just for tokens more than anything, who cares?
reposting>>98208458I haven't watched the video because I don't need to. Their group has already removed "that guy".Just look up any D&D horror stories channel, like that Crab. Watch one of those videos and see how it compares to your game and then judge hopw bad you are. Fighter is the best class and Champion is the best sub-class.
>>98209178Ninja and samurai both got their own class in 3.5. Yes yes we all know you can just pretend your rogue or fighter or whatever the fuck is a Jap.The real reason they won't make any Asian themed classes is because of the DREADED fear of being called racists, or bigots, or culturally appropriating. WoTC despise the old book. They have in gigantic bold letters the following on the Oriental Adventure page of DTRPG>We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.Jesus Christ, how horrifying. I have no idea when this DEI woke mind virus will end but I'm grateful that third party developers can at least continue to develop stuff that's not complete trash.
>>98209285It's not a bad effect, but in what way do you think this is remotely cracked?
>>98209292if you're that dark sun spear and shield guy i just want you to know that i genuinely think about you and your character all the time. it's so fucking cool yet so simple
>>98209294>The real reason they won't make any Asian themed classes is becauseThe real reason is that they're allergic to making any new classes in 5e. They made a Samurai subclass, but all that did was highlight how pointless the whole concept is.
>>98209296avg 3 tHP per turn for free, actionlessly
>>98209297>if you're that dark sun spear and shield guyI'm not him, but he surely appreciates your comment.
>>98209300>The real reason is that they're allergic to making any new classes in 5eYes that too, to be honest I just assumed we were all talking about them doing it as subclasses. I have no idea why they don't make more classes. It would improve the game considerably. Prestige classes in particular were great. Now the equivalent is to go 2-3 different classes to get the subclass bonuses and call it a day while spamming cantrips because they scale off level instead of class level.
>>98209386They did an interview recently that effectively said if they can’t figure out how to easily describe the class in a few words to a stranger and they don’t know it, they’ll pass. They’ll also pass if they can’t figure out how to make a bunch of subclasses off of it. Like, fighter makes sense, has a lot of space inside to inspire things like a fighter-samurai or fighter-Jedi, but how many different iterations of the samurai could they do? If the new class can’t inspire a bunch of subclasses theyre not interested in it
>>98209285>>98209302I wouldn't turn it down but it's not going to drastically affect a creature's survivability. You remember temp hp doesn't stack, right? Also, 3 is not the average of 1d4 or 2d4.
>>98209649(2.5(2))0.65 = 3.35, or 3 rounded down

>>98209826>>98209834>1.6 average temp HP per turn for two charactersWow, somebody call the police
>>98209843well as i came up with this crazy revolutionary idea i learned about the twilight domain cleric while combing through my books for class features and magic items that granted temporary hp under a similar system and became extremely paranoid and skeptical about any thp that resembled its function. i am simply erring on the side of caution, anon. please do not arrest me
>>98209510They shoud just have an Asian class that has things like jirai-kei, gyaru, samurai, salaryman and Wasian as subclasses.
>>98209294That’s boilerplate legalese, not some heartfelt condemnation of (dear god, the scandal!) calling Japanese people “oriental.”Hey, fun bit of trivia: I wear an Orient watch. Wanna guess who makes it? The Japanese! This disclaimer has to be slapped on every old book because leaving it off is a chink in Hasbro’s extensive legal armor.Anyway, classes and subclasses should be designed from mechanics first. If you have two classes who fundamentally do the exact same thing, they should be the same class. And despite whatever raging weeaboos might tell you, historical samurai were functionally identical to European chevalier (who also composed poetry and practiced flower arranging so the Samurai don’t have a monopoly on any of that shit either.)
>>98209857The factor you're missing from Twilight Cleric, aside from how that works automatically for the entire party (along with having some status-curing benefits), is that Twilight Cleric's temp HP scales with level. A level 5 Fighter with this weapon can probably grant themselves and one other character 4 temp HP apiece at most.A level 5 Twilight Cleric is giving themselves and every ally within 30 feet 6 temp HP minimum, and it only goes up from there. The point is that it really isn't too much. Temp HP needs to hit a significant threshold of a character's HP to really be dangerous. I'd put this sword on par with a +1 magic weapon at most.
>>98209900how do you personally feel about the arcane archer, and if you are against it, how would you want to see it implemented? personally im really annoyed they keep adding more and more resources to martial classes that're just thinly veiled spell or pact magic slots

>>98208941Shadow Monk is explicitly a ninja. There is a fighter subclass literally named samuraia yamabushi is just a nature cleric.the only thing left is onmyoji
>>98208595>you are a tiefling fighter mechanically, and in this scenario are a member of the night watch>recently, the destitute mountain village of vogelblatt has had issues with halfling refugees thieving crops from people's gardens overnight>sadly, you're the poor bastard that the provost placed on guard duty in the small hours of the night>a few hours from first light, you notice your lamp dimming as you're patrolling through the deserted market>at the same time, you can perceive some commotion coming from the way you just came, despite the curfew in effect>with no prompts from the DM, do you feel comfortable making any decisions in this situation? do you understand the stakes? do you have any idea what your character, this tieflling fighter, might do, given the simultaneous volition?Sure, the entire party goes to investigate the commotion because that's the DM giving us a plot hook and if we don't we're just kind of refusing to play the game. You say "no prompts from the DM" but that's explicitly a prompt from the DM, and the problem isn't that I do actual literal nothing, it's that I have no SELF-motivation and SELF-direction.
>>98209294>Ninja and samurai both got their own class in 3.5.Great, go play that game that has more depth and customization and stop trying to make 5e something it's not.
>>98210079I know you're being a dick but I will replay as if you're being genuine.I did go back to 3.5 not too long ago. I played Tomb of Abysthor with some friends. 3.5 was not the game I remembered. The skills felt clunky and bloated, the system itself felt dated especially vancian casting, the lack of constant cantrips felt surprisingly crap. I had fun and would still play with that DM again but I just prefer 5e. I'd just like them to bring the aspects I enjoyed most from 3.5 to 5e. There were so many more splatbooks, feats, classes etc. I just don't like 5e's subclasses approach. I'd much prefer a small pool of subclasses for each class and a greater variety of base classes. But it seems I'm in the minority there. People don't want to play a Samurai they want to play Fighter again with a few abilities changed. 5e for all it's issues is more fun to DM for me than to be a player.
>>98210016anon, i didn't describe a party. it's just me and you, buddy; you're the party. i did not ask for you to investigate the commotion, i am merely informing you of a few inexorable truths are in the world with which you can engage with. you're assuming that there's a "right" answer to be made here. this is me detailing a scene, not dictating your options. a prompt from a DM would be>do you attend to your lamp, or will you investigate the racket in the distance?the "correct" answer is whatever you sincerely believe that your character, an underequipped guard by his lonesome with a duty to prevent thievery in his remote village, would find himself doing in that moment.
>>98209292Champion makes me wish we had more things to spend Inspiration on besides rerolls. That could make for a pretty neat feat idea.
>>98209857The 1d4 temp HP isn't a big deal, what makes Twilight Cleric and Artillerist's Temp HP generation so valuable is that they're both constant AOE's of a large chunk of Temp HP. They force the GM to focus fire on one target at a time otherwise the Temp HP will consistently absorb any chip damage a monster would do and carries into the fight after the ability is used making it an extremely effective ability for efficiently clearing encounters. The amount of temp HP your weapon is creating is fine, give it a short time limit if you're worried about a bag of rats situation and that's it. No one has ever complained about Storm Herald's Tundra ability's Temp HP being too high, you're 1d4 is going to be totally fine.
>>98210016also lad, i (>>98210130) wanted to say that i empathize with what might be going on right now. it is very telling to me that you have a really good comeback or response to any sort of advice or feedback you get. fact is, your defenses working so well to reinforce the state youre in tells me you have quite a bit more self direction than youre led to believe, youve just got something goin on the makes it go inward after a certain point when standing in the rain bruv you have to look up at the clouds and trust that, being able to see, you know the sun is somewhere behind them shining away. course that doesnt meant youre still not wet.
>>98210177The rerolls is already more impressive than you think. You don't HAVE to use it on an attack roll.Champion Fighter basically has ADHD, their brain goes into overdrive once the adrenaline starts pumping.>Get into barfight, roll initiative, ignore fighting back to roll a gorillion knowledge checks at advantage, understand BBEGs entire plan, finish off loser commoner you picked a fight with.works for other things too.>Poison save every minute>Aforementioned bar fight strat, get advantage on the next save, deadly poison defeated.

>>98210112>I'd much prefer a small pool of subclasses for each class and a greater variety of base classes. >>98209904>>98210187Full thing, in all of its glory. i took your advice and bumped the dice up a tier. this thing is positively dripping with lore implications that'll probably go way over your heads but this is an item that diegetically exists in my campaign setting's world
>>98210291not a fan of this weapon>temp HPProbably should give it a name, that specific feature. It's also worded funny.>that grants yourself and one additional creature of your choice within 10 feet a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to 1d6.should be more like>that grants yourself and one additional creature of your choice within 10 feet 1d6 Temporary Hit Points. The "equal to" bit is usually left for calculations like a die roll + a flat value..is it intentional that you can grant temp HP and roll dice for it on other people's turns?>once per turn>wherever you attackopens it up to use when you make an attack of opportunity.the feature also doesn't actually need to hit the target in order to gain this effect, so you can actually interrupt yourself by targetting yourself and gain the temp HP before you hit the target
>>98210416>wordedI steal rules from other sources. this one in particular was ripped from the eldritch cannon, which does use an INT value that no longer exists. good catch. I will fix it.>proc on opportunity attackYes. It's deliberately intended for use with a certain feat as a very specific type of weapon. if that's too much, i can always drop it back down a dice tier.>you target yourselfwell, targeting is the first step of an attack resolution. (making an attack, phb '24, p. 25) and the specific trigger is "attack roll"; im am not going to allow someone to make an attack roll against themselves, that is retarded. i would also rule that the poor elemental inside isn't going to even want to help someone that would take such an action in the first place. even bringing this up like i wouldn't immediately squash it as an thatguyism irks me mildly
>>98210416>>98210532following an epic trend of double posts because im an idiot>wordedi stole the proficiency and mastery clauses from the sun blade and barbarian world tree subclass features respectively, and the "unnamed t-healing feature" follows the arbitrary trend that exists in many of the artifacts and other generic items. the specific example i used was the dwarven thrower. curiously, "whelm" is a very similar item that has a bespoke paragraph for its throwing property.
>>98209907It seems like a range-focused alternative to the Eldritch Knight. Customization good, 400 classes bad.I’m a dirty filthy commie and/or 2A lover, so I think everyone has a right to bear spells.
>>98209294There's plenty of third party samurai and ninja classes (not subclasses) out there. Some are good.WotC is entirely too cucked to make it, you're completely correct. But there is design space for both of them if you like 5.0 enough. Probably also in 5.5, but I'm nowhere near as certain. Design features to look for:1- Both should either not know how to use shields, or should not be able to use everything with a shield.2- Both should have options for ranged and melee without one just being way better than the other.3- For Samurai you can have a fully mundane class and then some of the fictional stuff can show up in subclasses. For ninja you want some magical ninja stuff in the base class, because the ninja without it isn't mechanically interesting (and can probably exist as nearly a reflavored rogue), and the subclass can enhance it. Give it ki like a monk, but different powers than a monk.Anyway, it's not just oriental classes that Hasbro is shitty at, they also felt the need to rename the totem warrior because suddenly having references to any historical thing is super insensitive and turboracist or whatever. These guys have no courage, and their stuff is increasingly sloplike. But you can run 5.0 without any of this. You can grab anything you want from 5.5 as well. You can't rely on the corposlop version to be anything but writhing maggot, at least not for now.
>>98209292based>>98209297Thanks anon. The party druid recently sacrificed himself to create a heartwood spear for me to shove down a sorcerer-king's throat.
>>98209294These classes were both really bad as I recall. I think ninja occasionally some niche play as an alternative to scout or rogue in builds.
Which full caster subclasses are the strongest at level 3? Or which ones are your favorites in that lvl
>>98211067I really, really liked being a Circle of the Stars Druid in a "magi-tech" homebrew setting where there was a bourgeoning void-sailing civilization, but our characters were constrained to an artificially feudal world. That doesn't necessarily answer your question, but even at level 3 I always felt like I had something cool to do every turn. I will say though that having one of literally the only legitimately cool women I've ever met being a fucking awesome DM on top of it and an amazing table environment was a big part of that enjoyment. I'm so sad that she only ran a three shot and has been basically permanently booked at the venue she runs her mini-campaigns at until 2099. Also the buy-in was kinda steep at $35 but god damn it was worth it
If a DMPC is kind of shoehorned into a fight as a "the cavalry arrives to the rescue!" spotlight-stealing moment, am I the asshole for using Suggestion to tell them to go back and defend the village?
>>98211330lmao no
>>98211330Regardless of whether you'd be an asshole for it, it's probably not a great idea. Unless you're dead certain it was actually just a combat scene-stealing thing and there was no other reason for the dmpc to be there, you may screw up what your dm had planned and piss him off. You may also piss him off for even attempting to interfere with his grand master plan.Pissing off the dm is probably not a great move, especially in a game where the dm has included a dmpc and is therefore already automatically sus.
>>98211354Pissing off the DM is the exact roght move here. What's he gonna do? Kill my PC? Oh no, I'll just make another one or use it as an excuse to find a group where the DM is a seething retard.
>>98210532>well, targeting is the first step of an attack resolution. So if I close my eyes, giving myself the blind condition, and all of my allies hide and I attempt to hit what I thought was their location, the effect would trigger. or what if the player thinks there is an invisible creature nearby and starts attacking the air? Can he just give the whole party tep HP until he rolls double 6s for everyone? What about attacking a stone wall? a trainign dummyPersonally, i would attach the effect to "on a hit" or better "when you deal damage with this weapon" because on a hit you deal damage, and on a miss you still graze the target

>>98209297>>98209347are you going to share with the class what you're talking about?
Can the ranger be saved with a well thought out generous subclass spell list? I think if they had a ranged smite of some kind they'd be a lot better.
>>98211228>buy-inJesus Christ, how horrifying.
>>98211532I do think you could make ranger more fun with a better spell list or spell progression. One of my favourite half-caster builds in 3.x used mystic ranger as a base and then took a bunch of things to get some domains and access to the paladin and wizard spell lists.

New GWM kinda sucks, yea?>When you hit a creature with a weapon that has the Heavy property as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can cause the weapon to deal extra damage to the target. The extra damage equals your Proficiency Bonus.>as part of the Attack action on your turnso you can't use it on your bonus action Hew attack, and you can't add it to your attacks of opportunity and then on top of that, its haf as s trong until you get to tier 4, and even then 1 old GWM hit is almost as much as 2 new ones
>>98210208It's even wilder than that, no? Since you can give inspiration to other party members, anyone watching you fight can potentially benefit.
>>98212036Isn't that just with the Inspiring Leader feat?
>>98210177>>98210208>>98212036It's specifically written into the rules that you can give out your inspirations to other people if you already have one.
>>98212034Counterpoint here is that sharpshooter and GWM were unquestionably the best damage feats going as the old versions. This one is fine for a feat imo: it still gives you a consistent, every turn damage boost, you can now use it with certain ranged weapons, it's been packaged to a strength increase and it still enables bonus action attacks. Weapon masteries have kind of changed what weapons you might specialise in but I don't think GWM sucks as a feat, it just sucks compared to the old version which was a no-brainer.
>>98212044That's a different thing. A character with Heroic Inspiration can give it to another character, although the rules suggest doing this mainly as a reward for good play.
>>98212075Fuck that, I'm using that for my first attack with topple to give the rest of my attacks advantage.

>>98212272Oh, a +10 is quite a lot. But the -5 seems to balance it out. Although a Reckless Barbarian might get more out of it than a Fighter.
>>98212276That was the fun of it. Finding ways to mitigate the accuracy decrease for the increased damage. Sharpshooter did the same for ranged weapons. The new version is only +6 at level 20 and games rarely go that high. There's no strategy to it. Just an overall nerf.I don't like it
>>98212284Imagine 2024 5e berserker barbarian with 2014 gwm lolBasically you become a butcher
>>98212284i like the new one, allows for you to use it sill w/ ranged weapons without needing a second feat, plus there wasn't ever really a choice, the choice was always 'take the chance' because there's no reason not to just always use it. w/ all the easy ways to get adv, it meant i was just a strict upgrade pretty much 99% of the time
>>98212208>He thinks the ravenloft book has edge
>>98212291i've looked at the art in it, its good shit.
>>98212290There were a few points where against a high AC enemy you were better off not risking it, but generally it was just a boost to average damage.Though it's not exactly like the new GWM is any better, because it's quite literally just a boost to damage and not much else interesting.
Goddamn, I really miss my barbarian.I could make another one, but choose human and take Magic Initiate to have some utility outside of combat.
imo old GWM/SS were more interesting when you were in combat, but they were overcentralising and it was lame that you took them as soon as possible and got a bulk of your power early. New GWM has a smoother power curve and it makes sense to use different weapons and take different feats. The problem I have is that removing them lowered the power ceiling while casters only got more powerful.
>>98212247In the couple of years I've been playing nu-champion, I've found that while anon's theoretical uses are fun, most of the time it's better to let the nerds handle info checks, and save the champion inspirations for attacks and the occasional charisma check. It only comes back during combat. Maybe next level I'll change it up, but don't think I' going to hit level 13.
I just let all my players use the power attack option from GWM and SS without the feat. Shit is just leftover feat tax for martials.
>>98212297It's safe edgy. It still fits with their DEI agenda. For example the gypsies in Barovia are neutered.
>>98212353i personally think its good that we don't call on specific real life cultural and ethnic groups of people and instead use fantasy replacements. like Shou Lung is good. Vistani is also good.

I like that people rage about muh DEI as if diversity, equity and inclusion weren't objectively good things. It's like complaining about the general concepts of fairness or happiness or grace. I'm imagining a parent at a kindergarten interrupting the teacher during storytime to say, "No, sharing isn't caring. We should hate and distrust those who are different from us. Understanding and forgiveness are weakness."Obviously a social movement and the actions taken in its name is more than the words that make it up, but it's still funny.
