Fellow anons,
What is your favorite all time /hwg/ ruleset?
>>
Today in military history, july 3rd:
>Battle of Adrianople (324 AD): Roman Emperor Constantine I defeated his co-emperor Licinius. This victory forced Licinius to flee and paved the way for Constantine to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
>Battle of Fariskur (1250): Fought during the Seventh Crusade in Egypt. The Mamluk army led by Baibars decisively defeated the Crusaders, capturing King Louis IX of France, who was later forced to pay a massive ransom for his release.
>July 3, 1863: On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s last attempt at breaking the Union line ends in disastrous failure, bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end.
>Following the French armistice with Nazi Germany, British forces (Operation Catapult) launched an ultimatum to prevent the French fleet from falling into Axis hands. When negotiations failed, the Royal Navy bombarded the French fleet anchored at Mers-el-Kébir, Algeria. The sudden attack sank or seriously damaged multiple French ships and resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,300 French sailors.
>Battle of Königgrätz (1866): The decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War. Prussia's advanced military tactics and needle-gun weaponry secured a shattering victory over the Austrian Empire, establishing Prussia as the dominant power in Central Europe.
>Liberation of Minsk (1944): Soviet forces successfully recaptured Minsk from Nazi occupation during Operation Bagration, trapping and destroying the German Fourth Army.

I don't actually know.
The men who would be kings is ace, but I'm over individual casualty removal.
Hail Caesar is just an excuse for Warlord to sell supplements, and no one else wants to touch anything other than bolt action and I just don't like moderns because the uniforms aren't as fun to paint as the crass garish obscenities ancients are more permissive of.
>>
>>98299925
That's a little excessive but it seems we are back to regular edition. Been a while since we last hit the bump limit, although I can't say I'm particularly proud of the way we got there.

I'm currently on a Port Arthur binge. Really enjoyed this book from a war correspondent who was there for the whole thing: "Port Arthur - Siege and Capitulation". Free on Google books. Should have called it siege and surrender, that rolls of the tongue doesn't it. Book is an easy read, it's 600 pages but I got through it all in a couple evenings.
All the while as I was reading the more insane WW1 started to seem. All the horrors of trench warfare are completely clear in 1904. It seems delusional to expect anything different in 1914. What are the generals doing if they're not taking lessons from the Russo-Japanese war? Are they really expecting anything different to happen? Sure, on the west front the mountains may not be as steep, but the fortresses are much much more developed, artillery is much more commonly available, all this was known long before war broke out.

The war has some really cool actions which would lend themselves well for wargaming scenarios, however you'll need a lot of terrain. Maybe I'll make a custom map in Minecraft with the new cannon and physics mods and play it out on a server. I can't be fucked to make a mountain terrain board with trenches, barbed wire, casemates and counterscarps.

Both, I own physical copies of all the battlegroup books of the eastern front. Including the recent kustrin one which we are currently playing and about to finish the campaign.

But turns out that purchasing stuff from the uk and ship it to the EU is a huge pain in the ass, and something we do only once every couple of years when PSC has a couple of new releases.

If I like the books I will purchase them that is for sure. I also want to check centag and the omnibus because there were several complains of misprints and PSC never corrects those.

This will have to do until my custom photo "booth" is finished. Guy de Lusignan, one of the traditional villains of history. The man that the nobles of Jerusalem hated, defeated by Saladin, feuded with Conrad but actually liked by Richard the Lionheart? Anyway, Giy's dynasty survived when Richard gifted him Cyprus as a consolation prize when the nobles of Jerusalem chose Conrad as king.

Why is it a "pain in the ass" to ship from the UK to Europe? I order from the UK to remote Alaska all the time, no big deal.
>>
>>98305320
Customs, your 27€ book randomly jumps to 60€.
You pay shipping + the 21% vat of the product and shipping (because PSC is unable to declare the item as book with no vat or become ioss registred) then the new 3€ tax per item category, and the random customs expenses that sometimes do not happen and sometimes charge you 17+ €
It's a pain.
>>
>>98306698
Damn, euros really are slaves

I mean we can purchase stuff from the rest of the EU with 0 taxes or customs which is neat. The blame is on the brits and their stupid brexit.
>>
>>98308971
>the blame is on the Brits
The brits arent the ones imposing taxes or customs. Modern Jewish governments aren't ran by the citizens so it's very servile of you to attribute the actions of government to the common man. By the way, living in Alaska on a small island I am 10x farther from the UK than you yet I don't pay nearly as much as you to receive stuff from the UK, and we aren't in a supranational union with them, so blaming it on "brexit" is just brain dead

>I can't be fucked to make a mountain terrain board with trenches, barbed wire, casemates and counterscarps.

Use a topo map instead. There's no actual need for a diorama. If you to game the actions you read about, then game them. Don't wait for the perfect figs, the perfect paint jobs, the perfect table, etc. Just fucking do it.

Perfect is the enemy of good and, in the case of our hobby, all too often prevents us from doing anything at all.
>>
>>98312418
This anon is right. There's plenty of DBA players with felt fields/marsh/forest. I want to laugh but they play way more games than me so I just shut the fuck up.

I have a few 2mm-scale top down view paper armies to print from my copy of Strength and Honour but I was wondering if there was more top down paper armies out there? Any scale, really, but top down is important.
>>
>>98312480
>felt fields/marsh/forest

One of the best convention games I was part of was a late ACW naval battle called Trent's Reach. The table was felt, only one or two of the ships were "accurate" models, the shore batteries were cardboard markers, and we played THREE complete games switching sides, adding new players etc. in one afternoon.

Meanwhile some club was showing off an absolutely exquisite Pointe du Hoc diorama that included a cliff face reaching from the floor to the table top. The club didn't play a single match during the entire con and one of the members told they'd never used it at home either. It was a fucking beautiful piece of art and fucking useless for gaming purposes. Sure looked pretty and I had my picture taken with it just like 100s of others. Would have been nice to actually PLAY a match on it though.

Don't wait on perfect. FTF play is already hard enough to arrange. Just play the game and worry about the eye candy in your spare solo time.
>>
>>98312418
In general I fully agree with you, I'm a big hex 'n chit guy anyway, no problems there. However for the Port Arthur siege the elevation is of vital essence. Trenches, escarpments, mining and sapping. All this doesn't make as much sense on a flat plane, not to mention direct and indirect artillery fire - these are of utmost importance. The Russians had their guns stationed on mountain tops and fired on a direct arc, which was seen as a big mistake. The Japanese deployed howitzers out of sight behind ridge lines and used observers connected by telephone.
I suppose all these lessons should have been thoroughly learned by the Crimean war and should have been elementary to any trained officer. But, they weren't, and indeed in WW1 similar mistakes would once again be repeated.
>>
>>98312732
>I'm a big hex 'n chit guy anyway

Then you already know dozens and dozens of hex & chit games that easily model changes in elevation, LOS, indirect fire, and all the rest. Hell, PanzerBlitz handled all that on flat map back in 1970 for fuck's sake.

Are your prospective opponents so dim they can't grok topo maps with contour lines?

This is starting to sound like that club with their Pointe du Hoc diorama. They were interested in the eye candy than in actually playing the game.

Kind of a random question, but most Cold War games I know that deal with "traditional" warfare (the old boring 80ies Cold War Gone Hot) are company/batalion size. There's anything that goes for platoon/squad? Like, really small actions.

Or using battlegroup northag dividing the prices per unit and picking squads and platoons instead of companies.

7 days to the river Rhine is a good option too.

Maybe ak47 republic or adapted force on force perhaps?

Seven Days to the River Rhine is at (reinforced) platoon level. An infantry stand represents a whole section but an armor stand is a single vehicle.

Why not 28mm?

>>98314781
More minis per square inch, but not too small a size to considerably lose detail.

>>98313838

I do like that Battlegroup autism, but yeah, I was going for something more similar in scale to Force on Force. But probably the peculiarities of 80ies warfare do not show well in hyper-skirmish mode.

Thanks anon, first time I see this one. I need to sort out my pile of shame but this calls for a 3mm Oddzial Osmy venture.
>>
>>98314781
I have a huge passion for 28mm, the majority of my collection is 28mm and most of my terrain is 28mm as well. For Napoleonics specifically I would go 15mm because you can field much larger armies much easier, but it's not too small that you lose the personality of individual troops like you do with 6mm and 10mm, for example. 15mm is also easy to paint and generally cheaper. I personally have no interest in anything smaller than 15mm, I have painted 6, 10, and 12mm as well but I really didn't enjoy it and I didn't like the end result with the troops being so tiny. 28mm is great though if you never plan on having big battles, or if you have a TON of free time to paint a massive 28mm army. 28mm would be good if you plan on playing Silver Bayonet, or Sharp Practice at the very largest. I started 28mm for Sharp Practice and ended up regretting not starting with15mm because I wanted to go bigger and bigger. If I started Napoleonics as a beginner today I would just start straight away with 15mm using LaSalle 2 or Valour and Fortitude

>missed the victrix Roman sales
I’m sad bros.
I think I primarily like the victrix Romans because of their detailing, heroic scale and that they sell decals compatible with their shields.
Are there any downsides to the victrix Romans by chance?

And lastly what’s a specific good source of good painting and weathering techniques that focus on nontoxic (usually acrylic) means for models? I’m okay with book sources too.

Not really, aside from the fact that shield transfers will get pricey over time. They're a lot better than most of their earlier miniatures (cf Nappo Brits)

I think victrix went above and beyond with their Roman models. It will be a long time before they will have to update them.

What’s a good tutorial on painting Roman shields then if the decals are not a good deal.
I will admit I am not sure where to start on what programs can be used to make decal digital images to be printed on decal paper.
I’m hoping someone here has done this and can give some details on how to do this.
