What are the generals doing if they're not taking lessons from the Russo-Japanese war? Are they really expecting anything different to happen? Sure, on the west front the mountains may not be as steep, but the fortresses are much much more developed, artillery is much more commonly available, all this was known long before war broke out.The war has some really cool actions which would lend themselves well for wargaming scenarios, however you'll need a lot of terrain. Maybe I'll make a custom map in Minecraft with the new cannon and physics mods and play it out on a server. I can't be fucked to make a mountain terrain board with trenches, barbed wire, casemates and counterscarps.

The Japanese deployed howitzers out of sight behind ridge lines and used observers connected by telephone.I suppose all these lessons should have been thoroughly learned by the Crimean war and should have been elementary to any trained officer. But, they weren't, and indeed in WW1 similar mistakes would once again be repeated.

For Napoleonics specifically I would go 15mm because you can field much larger armies much easier, but it's not too small that you lose the personality of individual troops like you do with 6mm and 10mm, for example. 15mm is also easy to paint and generally cheaper. I personally have no interest in anything smaller than 15mm, I have painted 6, 10, and 12mm as well but I really didn't enjoy it and I didn't like the end result with the troops being so tiny. 28mm is great though if you never plan on having big battles, or if you have a TON of free time to paint a massive 28mm army. 28mm would be good if you plan on playing Silver Bayonet, or Sharp Practice at the very largest. I started 28mm for Sharp Practice and ended up regretting not starting with15mm because I wanted to go bigger and bigger. If I started Napoleonics as a beginner today I would just start straight away with 15mm using LaSalle 2 or Valour and Fortitude

Humorously the angloids engaged in this same behavior all throughout the period. During the 100 Days, at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, etc. it was the Kings German Legion, the Dutch, the Belgians, Nassau and Brunswick, Scottish highlanders or The Greys, etc. that did the majority of the fighting and were always tasked with the toughest roles while the bongs were kept relatively safe and in the rear until absolutely necessary.

See this map of Talavera where you can see that the British Guards form the centre of the defensive line and are very much not held in reserve. Most people are talking about the French Old Guard, which indeed were usually held in reserve to cover unexpected developments, however you often find that British Foot guards are placed to stiffen the forward line.As for "mechanisms" that will depend on the rules you are using. In the picture I posted of a game the rules there were Blucher which apart from the "reserve" move rule have very few additional rules for guards. They are however excellent at mopping up weakened units in a way that regular line units aren't necessarily and therefore it's usually a good idea to have them as a reserve. Additionally artillery units kill everyone the same, so having them in the front line is a good way to have fewer of your best soldiers before the proper fighting has even begun.

I'm looking for a kitchen table ancient skirmish game. I have a rather nice selection of minis for Classical Greece cities, Alexander’s army and random late Republic Romans. I want a game that requires 10-30 minis per player to have some fun with bunch of your dudes fighting for booty and performing heroic deeds. I really liked Mortal Gods for that but I want a game that doesn't use all those custom cards, trademarked dice and other gubbins and shit. SPQR is fun and simple despite being rough around the edges. It gets bonus points for a wide selection of units and factions. I don't see it as a system good enough to still play it in 3 or 5 years though. Most of my minis are based on round bases and having 4 different facing arcs is quite annoying.I know I could simply brew up all the profiles in Open Combat but I want to play an actual historical game rather than alternative wargame that happens to have a profile builder baked in.

So, I am currently clearing out a bunch of hobby stuff, making a deliberate effort to not be that guy who hoards a bunch of books and minis that never get used and take up loads of space.I've reached the Warhammer section of my collection, and I'm in two minds about what to do with my Warhammer Ancient Battles books. I have never played a single game of WAB, but bought many of the books second hand on ebay over a period of a few years while toying with the idea of building some armies.
