Ok, putting aside everything else that’s wrong with this that I’m sure other Anons will point out:

The Commissariate doesn’t even have any authority over the AdMech.

Looking good anon, how long does it take you per model to paint them to that standard?

At least a full session, maybe two. So like 2-4 hours. Depends on how much detail there is.

>>

I just fell for bait, didn't I
>>
>>98302622
No, I've seen anti used as a descriptor for some nebulous antagonist before and I want to know what it actually means. Is it anti-establishment, anti-liberals, anti-racists? I can't tell, since it's used so widely by people making lots of stupid arguments and I kinda want to know if there's an actual defined group they're railing against
>>
>>98302625
Anti whatever """fandom"""" you're declaring allegiance to. So in this case it's probably anti-AI sloppa, but I've anti-anime, anti-fanservice, anti-lolicon, or something more specific like anti-Kpop Demon Hunters

I plan on getting the official kits for characters and such, and using the official plague marine kit to be the Champions for the squads. I just cant justify to myself spending hundreds of dollars on toy soldiers. I found a scan print for an old school Daemon Prince of Nurgle that Im super excited to paint. Though I'm probably gonna give him a different head. Still not sure about that.

The shield says Terra Vult like one of the old forge world decals. The shin says Dorn though it looks like it says Porn if you look at it too much.

I couldn’t find a good enough shield decal so I had to settle for the black fist.

Ripper Swarm: 30 points per model
M6" T2 W3 Sv 6+
6 melee attacks S2 AP-
4 ranged attacks S3 AP- range 6"

Tyranid Warrior with Deathspitter: 20 points per model
M6" T5 W3 Sv 5+
5 melee attacks S5+1 AP1
3 ranged attacks S5 AP1 range 36"

Is deepstrike that valuable?

Ranged warriors aren't fast and don't shoot or hit hard but fuck they're cheap for only 20 points, especially if you take the detachment that makes them battleline and gives every unit a 5++. Seems like they might be valuable.

Why can't 40K get cool boxes like this?
>>
>>98302866
rippers have a few things going for them, but in my opinion their biggest superpower, which they share with scarab swarms, is that they are extremely flat.

thats it. flat

sounds stupid, but it makes them incredibly easy for your opponent to just forget about them or ignore them, and also makes them very easy to hide, and those things combined means they almost always live way longer than they should and just become an absolute pain in the ass all game.

you dont need a zillion of em, just one or two units is usually enough, but for both my nids and necrons, the little swarm bases are often unsung MVPs.

the HQ techpriests in admech. they look good, the rest of it does not though

crisis suits. they need the farsight/twin lance upgrade in size and detail, they need actual hands instead of nub arms, and their weapons need to be more detailed. the regular crisis suits are so small you coulnt even reasonably fit a pilot in them

>>98302942
the entire range is based on his design and the other set designs incorporating it in alien and aliens. thats the whole fucking point, the entire aesthetic, lore, and vibe of tyranids are gigers aliens through an through.

maybe the very earliest interpretation of tyranids didnt lean 100% into it, but by 3rd edition onwards, which is the tyranids most people know, it was all in on the giger alien hive biomech killing humans as part of our reproductive cycle shit.

getting rid of that would be like saying "i like this ork army but they really shouldnt be green"
>>
>>98302942
That's your (wrong) opinion, but the nids are undeniably based on Giger's designs and theoretically moving away from them would make them not Tyranids anymore.

>>
>>98303091
nothing, tau are remarkably advanced but only in relation to their young age and because their tech is way better distributed across their armed forces, so you have their common soldier sporting gear that would be found, say, at the 10% veterans of another, but again, in this hypothetical comparison the top 1% soldiers of said other race may sport far more advanced gear, while the tau haven't reached those extreme peaks

but pretty much all races of the galaxy have more advanced technologies here and there, it's just either highly specific and/or concentrated somewhere and it just so happens that the tech cult of mars hoards the most advanced technologies humanity has to offer

the 2nd edition tyranids were even more obviously xenomorph. those late 90s ones are just blatantly James Cameron Aliens: The Army.
the main visual shift away was with 5th edition, when nids got bulkier and leaned more into armor and scythes as a reference to the popularity of starship troopers and Starcraft Zerg (which ironically were themselves also ripping off Alien AND Tyranids, forming a perfect circle of derivative reference).

Wasn't Starcraft supposed to be 40k IP at first, but James pulled the license or some shit part of the way through so Blizzard had to pivot to legally distinct nids and marines?
>>
>>98303263
It's a common story but it seems to be pure fabrication, they just ripped off gw with their knock-offs with no contract attached.
>>
>>98303263
something to that effect, though I'm sure theres an ackshuwally or two in the details.
>>
>>98303263
No. There's slightly more credibility a connection between Warcraft and WHFB, but even that's somewhat dubious, and by the time of Starcraft Blizzard definitely weren't interested in using a licence.
>>
>>98303263
That's always been partly urban legend but as I recall they did approach GW with a possible partnership during preproduction after Warcraft Orcs and Humans but there was never any actual contract signed or agreement reached and it was early enough that most of their key designs for SC hadn't even been finalized.
>>
>>98303263
Metzen said otherwise.
>>
>>98303263
No that was Warcraft Orcs & Humans. It was originally going to be a licensed Warhammer RTS, but GW pulled out and Blizzard took it to market anyway, making it slightly different.
StarCraft’s similarities to 40K are all an homage to Warcrafts origin.

It has been a very long time since I painted any models. I still have all my old GW paints and some brushes etc. I left the paints in a plastic semi sealed bin in my closet. Can I still use these paints? or are they "spoiled" so to speak? Probably been in my closet for maybe 4 years.

I'm immune to burnout.

I paint 50 to 100 minis a week.

Colour Forge main color spray, wash, dry brush, some detail work, bases. Boom, done.

Next.

Painting armies is more satisfiyng than painting single models like pieces of art.

I'm also retarded, my IQ is probably 80-90.

>there was no visual shift between the 3rd/4th edition nids and the 5th ed ones
t. definitely was not playing nids in early 3rd. their whole silhouette changed.

keep in mind the nid codex that's nominally for 3rd (black codex) didnt come out until late in the edition, well after starcraft was an established cultural phenomenon. so some of the art at that point is already showing the post-SC shift, you can see it in the late 3rd / early 4th plastics like the gaunts kit and magragge too.

>>98303263
>>98303308
that was supposedly WC1. the case with SC is just "nerds making games, and nerds consuming games made by other nerds which in turn inform their own art" organic proliferation. anybody into scifi wargames in the 90s was influenced by 40k, and anybody into scifi at all post-1998 was influenced by starcraft.

Man, it's so unfair. AoS Spearhead is extremely fun and decently balanced. TOW Battle March is a 500-750pts format with listbuilding, dedicated artfiacts, exclusive rules and even its own campaign. Meanwhile Combat Patrol was a format on its own and it got reduced into nothing within one edition.
>>
>>98303692
There are several fan rule sets for small games that work pretty well. Crucible in particular. But it also would not be hard to create a similar spearhead-style game type for 40K, GW just doesn't want to go that route for some reason. It literally just needs a deck of twist cards and objectives/strategems and a small table layout with like four pieces of terrain that block line of sight.

The tricky thing with kitbashing Aberrants is that their arms are paired along with their pectorals, so swapping them around with other stuff is pretty much always going to involve some dramatic chop work.

>>98302535
Continuing to shame this tasteless anon. In regards to Genestealer adjacent models, the only thing in need of address is the Broodlord. In particular, besides the current model being shit, GW needs to finally put the lid on Broodlords and Patriarchs as distinct bioforms. Broodlords should be reimagined as additional muscle for Genestealers, with some weirdly unique biomorphs for his arms, like maybe the fused giant arm like in the old 4e concept art or what they went with for the Malstrain Alpha.

In many cases their humanity was stolen from them
They were sterilized and forced into an extremely harsh war for thousands of years, betrayed by their supposed brothers
They endured psychic conditioning to care about nothing but war in the name of the Emperor, and they are more effective at war than regular humans and thusly in many cases they view normal humans as being weak/lesser

Pretty much. I think they were *maybe* an attempt to retcon Patriarchs at a time where Genestealer Cult lore was being largely ignored, but obviously we are past that and now Broodlords sit in an awkward position of being basically identical to Patriarchs when Patriarchs are a thing. Hence why I think GW should just do a major overhaul of Broodlords to make them unique.

>>
>>98303939
>I think they were *maybe* an attempt to retcon Patriarchs at a time where Genestealer Cult lore was being largely ignored
Yeah it was pretty much this. The actual reason for their creation was not lore-based though, it was a game design decision to give the "little guys" a thematic HQ choice so that you had:

>Hive Tyrant - Leads big monster swarms
>Tyranid Warrior (later became the Prime) - Leads mid-range swarms
>Broodlord - Leads the little swarmy swarms

It's an outdated concept now though given they made the plastic Broodlord model huge and it's bigger than the Prime, and then they brought back the Patriarch too, so it's just in a weird fucking spot.

From the beginning...
>Horus Rising - the very beginning, setting up the stage
>False Gods - Horus falls to Chaos
>Galaxy in Flames - Isstvan III, actual start of the Horus Heresy and a proper Space Marine vs Space Marine action
Those three are direct sequels of one another.
>The Flight of Eisenstein - happens at the same time as the previous one, but follows a ship that escapes Isstvan III to warn the Imperium
>Fulgrim - starts earlier but eventually advances the story to Isstvan V also known as the Dropsite Massacre and the death of Ferrus Manus
All those five novels are what the HH series is build upon. Afterwards it's milked a lot. It meanders around meaningless plots and characters. There are tons of guides what to skip and what's essential but I wouldn't trust any of those. Also keep in mind that Black Library releases stuff in different format. Sometimes between one novel and another they released an audiobook or a short story, and eventually re-released it in an anthology, but it can lead to "Wait, he's alive? But he died..." so you're missing an important plot points and only get to understand it 10+ books later.

that depends entirely on the marines in question. every possible variation of relationship exists between SM and the regular humans from their worlds.
the one thing to note though is they're almost always apart from humans in their chapters. some SM interact more or less but none of them are close. If you want the standard chivalric knight roaming the countryside doing deeds, protecting his duchy of loyal mud eating serfs, that's Knights. Knights are the knights of the setting. in broad strokes, SM are more the zealot crusader monks of the setting.

technically yes, in practice no
Commissars are part of the Astra Militarum command structure, and AdMech personnel assigned to a regiment are under that same command structure. An IG general can tell a techpriest where to go, what to do, anything short of how to do their jobs and they are forced to obey or face heavy sanctioning or execution. If a Commissar suspects disloyalty or is in command of a regiment due to the existing officer structure having been demolished, he tells a Techpriest to jump, the Techpriest asks how high. The AdMech doesn't get to lodge a formal protest if their personnel are being 'mistreated' by being denied their daily smoke breaks and toaster fucking rituals

Holy triggered batman, I thought the muscle suit was also called a black carapace.

Granted, you really only see the chaos marines with missing pieces of it due to the fact they can't always maintain (or even be bothered to maintain) parts of their suit when they can't get slaves to maintain it or steal bits off a loyalist.

That did throw me off a bit seeing some loyalist wearing straight up gloves instead of the armored gauntlets but obviously they don't need to be armored since most of the power is coming from the muscle suit.

Talos is framed as a bitter cynic who kills and tortures innocents, abducts infant children and rejects good at every opportunity to spit in the face of the Emperor (read God) because he was created to usher in a supposedly idealized perfect utopia by being employed as a vicious dog on a leash, only to then be discarded like garbage by the supposed embodiment/personification of the concept of good
He’s a bitter nihilist who only bother to treat his slaves decently as a form of pragmatic cynicism because they are useful to him
He recognizes he was lied to and does reprehensible things in response
The entire story is just Talos’s suicide note and it’s written decently and I like the other characters in First Claw as well

The suit was already sealed. Flexible and armoured joints between the plates. There is no need for another layer. For decades we had images of marines dressing power armour on their naked skin. MkX introduced the idea of an undersuit onto which everything was bolted, enabling customization of parts and GW just retconned all power armour to have an undersuit under the plates.

The generic Dark Angel is very much green, and he was trying to move away from the “Big 4” chapters and their bright colors. It honestly seemed more like luck he came across the Templars before any other chapter, the black armor and maltese cross really appealed to him.

The only BL slop worth reading is things that aren't on the front lines or extremely macro-level. I.e., shit like Eisenhorn or Ravenor, or the new Hive novel. When you get into the seedy bed of the imperium culture, that's when it's interesting.

A vat grown black film that was inserted under the skin of the marine's torso. After a while it hardened into a shell. Whole reason why it's last, because the body has to have stopped growing. How firstborn are turned into primaris without any mention of dealing with the black carapace, or various marines in the fluff who kept growing... Eh, who knows, it's not like GW writers even read their own stuff. Anyway, the carapace grows roots into the body. Holes were drilled into it and interface plugs added. The carapace acts as an adapter to transfer signals back and forth from the marine's body, enabling their armour to become part of their body and even for them to interface with their vehicles.
>>
>>98304795
NTA and it depends.
CSM spend a lot of their time stealing skilled technicians, armor and weapons from the Imperium to maintain themselves.
One of the things the Night Lords Omnibus touches on is that the Night Lords can't reproduce themselves without stealing geneseed from loyal chapters. They use it as a currency in some cases.
tl;dr it just depends how lucky they get.

When I say "guidelines" I don't mean hard rules. We have the fluff, but nobody bothers to read it and everyone ignores it constantly so what is even the point of having it? Despite edition after edition mentioning auto weapons are caseless, artists and modelers keep making auto weapon ammo have casings and the weapons eject casings. Just like how ripper guns are suppose to be shotguns, but they've always been drawn and modeled as regular machine guns.
>Marine implants don't work for many chapters, so why can't such things differ too?
Phase 18 and 19 implants are necessary for a chapter to exist. Failure of either one of them is a death sentence for a chapter.

A old friend of mine came back into town. He got really into Warhammer since I last saw him. I really want to reconnect with him and I understand that this game isn't cheap so I wanted to get a sanity check. I am just looking for 1000 points of used Krieg pre-painted. What should I realistically pay for that? Prices are all over the place on ebay and peoples collections don't really make sense to me from my limited understanding. Some listings have half a unit like 3 out of 5 figures or some even have 6 out of 5 somehow.

I just want to grab 1000 points of someone's old stuff and just sit down and play with my friend. I don't really want any more and am not interested in painting. What should I reasonably pay for that as I monitor ebay listings? How often would you guys say a lot like that might pop up?
>>
>>98305114
Realspace Raiders is kind of a rough Detachment. It's decent for learning the ropes, but you don't even have the characters or battleline units required to benefit from the detachment rule so it actually doesn't give you any pain tokens (Drazhar is not an Archon). Skysplinter, Reaper's Wager, or Kabalite Cartel would probably work out better for your current list.
Talos should never take the twin splinter cannons on the tail when twin heat lances cost the same. Haywire are usually the preferred option but are more expensive. Melee weapons are all fine though you can't attack with both profiles at once so it's better to run either twin scalpels, put an extra attacks injector in one hand, or throw a liquidizer on one arm for a flamer threat.
I understand why your Kabalites are equipped the way they are, but adding a Splinter cannon and a shredder to them is pretty much a strict upgrade.
Reavers are great for speeding around and doing objectives but you might actually want to split them up into two units of 3 to give you more units to be in more places at once.
Drazhar is good but you might get more mileage out of an Archon in this list instead since it can get you some cheaper strategems and activate your Detachment rule.
As cool as Kabalites are Wyches are actually a much better unit right now and cheaper too. I know you don't like them aesthetically, but a Hameonculus and 5 Wracks only runs you 110 points right now which is the same as a Warrior band and would get you more options and a lot more pain tokens.

their technology is a little higher, but they’re still pretty clearly meant to be snakebites. their squighog boyz are clearly a replacement for boarboyz, their traditional nature, garbing themselves in animal skin, and most importantly having their debut being led by a snakebite character (zodgrod wortsnagga) is pretty clearly meant to invoke snakebites.

They can be built as a melee unit. Novitiates + Palatine is the sisters equivalent of smash captain. Pump some miracle dice into a palatine with them and she can kill almost any other character on the charge. Well, in 11th charging doesnt give fights first right? So idk...

Anyway novitiates are a great unit for what they do and a staple of the faction.'

You should be complaining about dominions versus battle sisters more, the balance between them has been pretty much always bad
>>
>>98305717
This has been a problem forever (see Space Marine Scouts). If they were cheaper they'd be too good. When you have a unit with trash defenses anyway making them cheaper with even worse defenses and higher mobility is usually a strict upgrade, since they still get wiped by the same weapons anyway.

you didnt need as many models, and box price was lower, but also people didnt make as much money and there was zero secondary market or discounts. in the early 00s when i started playing the game was still fairly niche, and most of the players were in their teens and twenties, there wasnt an older crowd playing it (the older guys did somewhat exist for whfb though) so most of the players were either broke college kids, burger flippers making $4 an hour, or actual teenagers with $10 a week allowance. kits were only $25-30 but it still was a fairly big impact on your budget, and for the cost of about 1 and a half kits you could just get a new video game and remember in those days video games were actually fun, it was before the online enshitification of gaming took over, so you got just a ton of great games like halo, zelda, bioshock, gears of war, ninja gaiden, devil may cry, plus at that point it was also the golden age of handhelds with gameboy color and then advance so you had handheld games competing for your money too with obviously the recognizable titles like pokemon and metroid and shit but also new franchises coming out all the time too like advance wars.

god i miss the 00s

$50 is very reasonable. the modern 40k collectible characters from warhammer plus or other limited boxes go for way more than that. hell the dark imperium lord of contagion was still going for like $80 last i saw

Holy shit you can almost physically feel all the soul get sucked out of White Dwarf right around mid 2006 as the golden age comes to an end. It's so stark. Right around the same time the first Horus Heresy novel comes out. The Medusa V campaign is like the last hurrah of SOVL, and everything starts feeling more like a lifeless sales catalogue.

That's because your oh so great 4th ed was a financial disaster for GW.
Literally the only time the company had negative profits in its entire history.
Partly it was the fault of over investing in LOTR, but also because the game was feeling as stale as it would be again in 6th-7th.
Hence why around 2005 they doubled down in corporate reforms and started a big offensive of diversification of their products.
WD wasn't also selling anymore so they cut down in content. Many writers went on to work in BL (which they wanted to do it anyway as career advancement), others went to FW

But you're a videogame kid that started with DoW, so you don't know shit about any of this, do you?

Forgefiends are a must if you wanna gamblemaxx. You can take them in the Vashtorr detachment that gives them a second pact AND make all their weapons hazardous every shooting phase for extra dev wounds.

It was entirely this. 40k was fucking great at the time. No one has ever said it felt "stale" around that time period in my entire fucking life. But it was also a time when more people were starting to get home PCs and video games were easier than investing time and money in a hobby where you had to assemble and paint everything and truck it out to game stores, so they already would have been facing challenges without the LOTR debacle.

It's not snap fit, its the regular CSM legionary kit. The shoulder pauldrons are interchangeable.

Side question: Should I build the melta marine or the missile launcher marine?

I think they intentionally left out Knarlocs during the refresh so Kroot don't compete with Exodites for a niche
>>
>>98305114
That's crazy, I had my first 11th game yesterday, also with Drukhari and Realspace Raiders.

I used a 10 man wrack unit, with a Haemonculus, and a Dark Vitality enhancement so he can bring back D3+1 every command phase without paying the tokens. It wasn't enough to hold the central objective, which is usually the most important with this force disposition. So you gotta ask what you can hold that objective with, because the Kabalites certainly won't do.

You definitely need an Archon to go with the Kabalites, so you start with 3 Pain Tokens. The reavers will be the units that fly 14-22 inches, to be the place you need them to be, and do the actions you need them to do. They will need those tokens.
