Their Descriptions>>98344879A sci-fi landscape featuring a crumbling circular stone archway topped with grass and broken columns, opening onto a coastal inlet. Waterfalls cascade from the arch down to tide pools below, while several bioluminescent, jellyfish-like creatures float through the air and hover above the water. A familiar spacecraft sits in the crevasse.>>98344886A vibrant alien jungle valley with enormous curved, leaf-like or claw-like green fronds arching overhead. The ground is streaked with orange, yellow, and red mineral deposits, with pale curved rocks or bones jutting from the terrain and a phaser sits on a rock in the foreground.>>98344890 surreal red landscape with massive curling, tentacle-like rock arches studded with purple crystal growths, spiraling around a channel of glowing red liquid. A thin, curved metal weapon, a bat'leth, juts out from the crimson stream, with a crescent moon visible through the arches in the hazy sky.>>98344897A dark, dramatic alien vista of jagged black rock spires glowing with orange light from within, set against a night sky with looming planets overhead. Wisps of orange cloud swirl through the scene. In the foreground rests a torn, tattered uniform shirt with a rounded collar and chest emblem, from a gold Starfleet uniform, weathered and full of holes, draped over the dark rock as a remnant of some past inhabitant.

>>98344055>get most of the picks after the 5th or 6th the deck will probably be more consistent (overall) than a new player trying to get signals focusing too much on a rare/mythicObviously, yesBut at that point, any kind of discussion or research about cards could be considered "netdecking". Even just opening this thread and seeing anon shitting his panties over the Fantasticar is technically netdecking since it gives me a ton of information about the format and the strength of a cardAnecdotally, I also used to rely on it, but I got significantly better results once I stopped using it; nowadays I only run the first couple of drafts per set with the 17lands Github companion so I can be familiar with the colours and that's about itI used to end up playing UR a lot since that would score pretty high up in the rankings, since a lot of the Untapped rankings overvalue card draw and "extra value"; at some point I realized I simply don't know how to play them properly so now I just force WB like a happy grug and win. Ironically, netdecking had effectively crushed my winrate for a while
>>98345096>To sexually graphic im just getting to the part where his wife pegs richard garfield while he watches and sobs.Anon, haven't you heard? Sexual stuff is fine as long as it's UB or Secret Lair.
>>98345116Im super excited for BBC (Big Borg Cube)
>>98344674Time Spiral.
>>98342919LARPThis was never true and if you read the article or even played the fucking game at the time you would know there were multiple important qualifiers >This ONLY applied to Standard because it didn't retroactively erase strong cards from previous sets >It was entirely about making creatures not unplayably shit while instants/sorceries shat out value to the point there were decks running 1 copy of Morphling as their only creature By this metric, they are still using the balance philosophy because Standard is not currently looking like Urza's Saga with sorceries that draw 7 and untap 5 lands. It's just that he stopped talking about it when the majority of players intake the game through Coomander and trying to discuss this would only make him look retarded because that shithole "format" still has Sol Ring legal.
>>98345206>By this metric, they are still using the balance philosophy because Standard is not currently looking like Urza's Saga with sorceries that draw 7 and untap 5 lands.... no?
>>98345318I'm waiting for you to find the sorcery that draws 7 and refunds its full manacost with zero setup. Because this is the type of design they removed in favor of the "staircase" and I don't think it takes a genius for you to realize they never did this shit again and every time a design even comes close (i.e. Badgermole Cub) people bitch about it.
>>98345013>ooga elves and two pretty big flavor fails its going to be a great set!to be fair I like the >seek the heart portion of the arkenstone but it's effect is super tame for being as big of a deal as it is
>>98345449The fuck are you even talking about.
>>98345482>Mark says the game is balanced by making some aspects of the game weaker while others become stronger>What he was referring to is making instants/sorceries weaker and creatures stronger>This argument looks retarded when talking about any format without rotation because you can just run the old strong cards with the new strong cards>So obviously he doesn't bring it up when the main way people play is a format that doesn't rotate
>>98345499It balanced eternal formats too, anon.

>>98345502You really want to LARP that Mark "Affinity/Dredge" Rosewater was thinking about eternal formats before 2018? You think eternal formats were considered when Lab Man got printed? You think Delve considered how Legacy decks filled their GY 4x faster than Standard? Eternal formats broke constantly, the only difference is that players were more willing to huff copium because netdecking was less mainstream of a practice and information was less ubiquitous.
>>98345517I literally do not now how you got on this schizo tangent but none of what you are saying is relevant to balance between the years of 2004 and 2018.
>>98345520>Delve and Dredge were not introduced between 2004 and 2018>DRS was not printed between 2004 and 2018>Top was not printed between 2004 and 2018Yeah I'm really sure these cards aged really well into Legacy with that staircase balance oh wait.
>>98345534>Sometimes there are singular mistakes. So what?
>>98345540It directly contradicts your notion that "staircase balance" did anything for eternal formats when the reality is they were not even a real consideration in Standard sets before 2018. If a card rotated Modern/Legacy you just got told to eat shit for 2 years if not more (unless you're Splinter Twin xddd) and it was way more egregious where entire decks revolving around cards got made instead of Delver swapping Stock Up for Flow State.
>>98345562>It directly contradicts your notion that "staircase balance" did anything for eternal formatsEternal formats were largely balanced for that entire time.
Don't you love Sci-fi garbage in your fantasy card game?
>>98345513they made a morbillion dollars
>>98345565What metric would you define as "balanced?" Because entire set mechanics took over Legacy, making entire decks, way more often before 2018 whereas now it's usually 1-2 cards from a set replacing cards in an existing deck that already did something similar (exempting MH for obvious reasons).
>>98345594Cope. Magic was always flirting with sci-fi.

Can anyone explain to me why the Paradigm spells couldn't have just been enchantments?
>>98346080do you mean mechanically or thematically?mechanically it would've made them weak to enchantment removal and we can't have that, cards are made for commander and they're not allowed to have downsides or something like thatthematically it wouldn't trigger opus or increment which are both big part of the set as well as any other synergies like flashback if the card didn't resolve in the first try
>>98346103correction, it would trigger increment only once instead of multiple times, because you cast the copy every turn
>>98345946The latter. You have to choose which modes you want before any of them are put on the stack, and they resolve in order so you'll have the treasure token before you draw the card, and you'll draw the card before you make a creature token. You won't have priority until all three have resolved.
>>98346103>>98346105It is annoying how because you cast them without paying their mana cost, you don't get the bonus effect on Opus.

Five years from now, you walk down the street. You see garbage men carry huge boxes full of unopened Magic products out of a house and tossing it into the bin. You hear their conversation.>What is all this stuff?>It's some children's game. Years ago people thought these would become collectibles. Hahaha. They put all their money into this.>Hah! >>98344980I love how they aren't even actual fucking planets or locations that exist in the Star Trek lore. It tells you all you need to know about how "quality" the set is going to be.
>>98345594The sci-fi part isn't the problem. Star Trek is nearly 100% technology and science based and to go one step further it does not have a focus on combat, battle or skirmishes. Yes, these do happen throughout all of the series but they are never the focus (in before some fuckass jumps in about DS9 being the "war" show - the war was the backdrop for the story in the final seasons, not the focus). You just can't justify slapping Jean-Luc and Data onto the field, equipping them with swords and having them run into the red zone. It 100% does not work and I have no idea why they are trying to force it. EOE is a completely different vibe from Star Trek, they aren't even close besides "its in space".

The original shows are mostly self-contained, so you can still go back and watch them and enjoy for what they are, which I did, I got into Star Trek around college, so the 2010's and I enjoyed it really well. The JJ Abrams movies are fine, action schlock mostly save for Beyond, which is around the same level of quality than the original series episodes. The old movies are hit or miss and they also end up becoming action schlock, but campy action schlock for the TNG movies. The new series suck, the writing sucks and the few things that are "good" are mostly just rethreading stuff from the original 3-4 series that were good, but fanservice for fans that still remember that.Nobody is going to clamor that this is "destroying the image" of Star Trek because the showrunners have been doing that for decades now and Star Trek fans just keep watching what they liked originally anyways.
