It's competent. Even if you tire of Jeskai Revelations, you can build a semi decent Elementals deck out of it. Thor benefits from lessons card as well. Problem is that it's boring as fuck. You sit there doing nothing for most of the game. And there is hard counter for it with graveyard hate.

While this is true, paying out in gemmies is significant
I easily profited off a few runs by playing turbo fog since it shits on all the meta decks and used my spare gemmies to pick up a playset of rare WCs. I also got quite a few packies (will post once the event ends).

Yeah, it is an absolute fucking joke. The whole game is the most shit free-to-play model I have personally experienced. I tend to favour Master Duel these days despite enjoying the game of Magic more just for the simple fact that you are able to 'disenchant' the cards you don't need. I always have a deck in construction in Arena and it physically hurts sometimes just buying packs over and over again to get wildcards. I am curious to see how they handle the new introduction of cards themselves to Daily Deals - I expect they will sell staples for Brawl and Standard at astronomical prices and only purchasable with gems.

>>

I've been playing this game for 3 years and I still have absolutely no clue how wildcards work, when opening packs or getting random rewards
I assume the hordes of commons and chaff that you get from drafting are wasted past the initial 4, but what about the rest, from other sources?
>>
>>98372578
You get wildcards as a bonus from opening any packs not for a sealed pool. 6 packs get you either a rare or mythic you can see your progress on the packs screen.
Opening more than 4 of a card gives you vault progress if its a common or uncommon, rare and mythic gives you 20 or 40 gems and no vault progress.
You can randomly open wildcards from packs not in a sealed pool as well and they replace the rarity slot of whatever they are. So instead of a rare you might get a mythic or rare wildcard, common and uncommon wildcards replace themselves.
It kind of sucks because you can get 4 copies of the same card from different sets and it just adds them to your cards and you get no vault progress or gems.
Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

to add to this
the vault is a joke. 1000 duplicate commons gives you a whopping 1 mythic wildcard and 2 rare wildcards
you need 1000 points to open it, each copy of a common beyond the 4th gives 1 point and each uncommon beyond the 4th gives I think 3 points

>>
>>98374165
the real problem with control these days is threat diversity, dovin's veto and removal spells hitting every permanent under the sun. old control decks could be beaten in a a variety of ways because removal spells were either situational or slow. nowadays enchantments and artifacts get killed (or bounced) by everything. just look at the abortion os design that is jeskai revelation
>>
I stopped playing around the time Spiderman released. Sometimes youtube recommends me some game designers that talk about Magic and I check the spoilers to try to keep up a bit. What's been the reaction to the Teferi Wakanda set? I chuckled when I saw the ad and they say how they've been talking to black history professors and this woman starts talking about how important it is for hair to be represented. I feel it has a really small target audience and apparently there's trouble making non UB sets so I'm a bit surprised their research told them to gamble a slot on it.

On a more serious note, it's kinda insane how much Tithe Taker gets mogged by Voice of Victory
It's only ever marginally more useful against activated abilities, but I have yet to see one that you want to actively cast during oppo's turn instead of your own (outside of Limited gemmies like Wanderbrine Trapper)

>>98374165
I just fucking hate how versatile Blue control is, whilst also having access to excellent card draw and card filtering
You can't play shit into open Islands lest you get massively outvalued and then he gets to draw/fix his hand for free
I don't mind sweaty 40 minute games against all other types of control, but monoU is always a miserable experience because every turn you're basically gambling the other guy's gotten unlucky for once
>>
>>98374165
Control is the only honest deck archetype so long as it's 1-3 colors. Once it touches 4 and 5 it's an aberration that signals a format is in very poor health.
>>
>>98374201
Revelation is only playable because of tablet and gran gran enabling it. Control is actually pretty dogshit currently, you either play lessons and hope they aren't mainboarding hand destruction or see rest in peace after sideboard, or you go 4 color to have an answer to absolutely everything. Way too many pushed UR cards for over the last year, and badger mole being the only thing that can stand up to them makes it even worse.
>>
>>98374511
revelation was in fact played before tablet, 4c control used to play a few copies before they started doing lessons bullshit
>>
>>98374552
Because of other UR cards enabling the shell like Shiko or River Regent that have since been powercrept. Nevermind the other UR cards that have been banned like Vivi and Steelcutter. I fucking hate UR and UG, if those colors are meta you know you're never going to have fun regardless of winning or losing.
>>
>>98374440
hasn't been honest since war of the spark when they got veto
>>98374563
shiko is jeskai. the main culprit is blue having insanely versatile bounce spells, just like white having insanely versatile removal, that had hit any permanent, everything else surrounding that is just a symptom because you can't go over the top of them or stick a permanent they can't disrupt like starcage

Problem is just powercreep. Design team is overworked and coked up bunch of faggots that's incentivised by the profit that each set makes. So they cram each new release with shit ton of overpowered cards for a few meta decks that are currently floating around.

>>
>>98374612
flashback has been replaced with thor now anyway. again, if you could stick permanents like enchantments or artifacts that an all instant deck shouldn't be able to intreact with, jeskai would be manageable. badgermole cub is a retarded snowball card, as is orouboid, but you should be able to play day of judgment decks to beat them. the reason that you can't is because of blue bounce and white removal killing enchantments and artifacts

And everything is powercrept, not just creatures. Stock Up and Flow State are staples in *vintage*. And that's not because of specific combos or a particular context, they just decided to print the best generic draw spells in ~30 years.
>>
>>98374571
Veto wasn't even a 4x of the entire time it was in standard and still isn't in pioneer. The most egregious part of UW during WTS was Time Raveler and they took their sweet time banning it when it should've never been printed. Funny enough, Star Cage doesn't really do anything against the main threats and those that it may effect are bold enough to bring artifact hate mainboard to counter tablet, so it ends up being mostly a dead card.
>>
>>98374790
time raveller was primarily a defense grid for field of the dead and other ramp abortions and veto was a maindecked negate (lmao) that warped control mirrors because you couldn't force through threats with counterspell backup so you had to overload on threats which is why we went from elegant teferi as the only wincon in esper decks to the current abortions with beza/ emperor/ a billion manlands
>Funny enough, Star Cage doesn't really do anything against the main threats

So over the past week, I have been sick and unable to function most of my brain, so I thought to try out MTGA as my choice of time machine into the future.
I typically love to play rock, because it is the most reminiscent play style of old. You go one for one in trades and use above average creatures to close it out. You play to the board and see how it goes, so G/B Rock in Pioneer was again my weapon of choice. And it was fine until I hit jade, and then I just couldn't win anymore. I tried pushing harder and harder against these unfair decks and I couldn't win no matter the sideboard or mainboard. Against "fair" decks like U/R prowess, I dominated, but against anyone with a combo or flow state, I fell behind.
This is the deck. You might have seen it before a few months back.
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-07-26-rock/
Then I wanted to play another type of deck not so suseptable to combos or aggro, so I gave standard's jeskai control a whirl and I just kept winning. It is not just powerful, but very hard to counter, I see. Like, first match aside, how do you counter the deck? Control harder! Nothing else works with simple sideboarding. GY hate? the instants are at normal cost for rate as is, so the deck still functions until you get to jeskai revelation. More aggro? Bro, I am boarding in wraths. More hexproof? Bro, I am boarding in wraths. Less kill spells? Okay, I get to loot for free with gran-gran for the whole game.
No deck can improve it's odds against Jeskai control than controlling harder. Duress and negates, or bust but if you do that, you are playing a control mirror which is the problem. It's very wild. For as stuck as I was at jade with G/B Rock in Pioneer, as soon as I switched, I got into Mythic in an afternoon on one switch. I just cannot get over how well the deck just does everything with too much value. I don't like it.
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-07-26-jeskai-control-standard/
>>
>>98374894
oh yeah, and the reason I switched from pioneer to standard, is that I fucking hate the learn mechanic. It is so blatantly broken, that I want nothing to do with that format at all. If you said, "I have a one mana instant that let's me wish for a card from my sideboard that deals with this exact situation" I would call you fucking stupid and to stop cheating, but this is where modern wizards design is at. Now I could have jumped onto it, but that isn't how I want to play the game. I don't want to play 12 planeswalkers wank or 12 wishes wank. I think it's gay so I will not partake.
>>
>>98374894
Yeah, basically using the board is now for chumps, or decks that can kill you in three turns
>>
>full control and hold priority at every opportunity
>rope at every opportunity
>the moment opponent presents lethal concede at light speed
>>
>>98374679
True. There's also Boomerang Basics. That card was specifically created for Izzet decks. They knew that Cutter and Vivvi were banned. "NP guys, here's one mana card that is capable of returning Stormchasers Talent, AND it draws you a card while doing that!" It'd be enough to keep Izzet a top deck, if it wasn't for even stronger powercreep everywhere else.
>>
>>98374894
>https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-07-26-rock/
Try Sami's Curiosity, Follow the Lumarets, or Shared Roots instead of Scientist. It won't be a massive increase, but 2/2 body is completely irrelevant in today's economy.
That would be a B deck in standard right now. Discard is loosing against card draw. And all the card draw engines have "look at cards" so even Sheodred won't be helping you there.

>>98373697
Its shit but its better than nothing. I got a handful of vaults just from drafting foundations and final fantasy by opening packs after i was done drafting.

In a f2p vidya that costs 60$ a year. Maybe that's fair. Paypigs drop 1000$ and more into this game. It creates attachment, they want to get something out of the game, so they keep dropping money into the game. They're psychologically raped, hooked and addicted. It's a vicious monetisation system.
I'm bloody fucking rich, I could drop that kind of money into a meaningless game, and It wouldn't mean a thing to me financially. But I'm bloody fucking rich because I know what to do with my money. f2p forever.

>>98376945
I'm not saying it needs to be, but MTGA is strictly contrasted with MTG physical format, where the decks and cards you buy will either be something you can physically keep for the future for a cool physical collection, or contain multiple cards that will appreciate in value that you can sell to fund buying new cards to play with.

That's just not a thing in MTGA, so putting money into MTGA is putting it into a black hole, while putting it into MTG physical format somewhat self-funds, or allows you to sell off and switch hobbies years down the line if you choose to.

It's not about needing to have resale value, it's about hobbies traditionally having the option and giving people the agency to resell their goods, and the digitization of hobbies removing that agency and people slurping that up being hilarious.

I was kind of hoping to get in casually with F2P but looking at the thread periodically the past couple weeks it sounds like it's really not worth it with how tight resources are. I ultimately think paying for your game pieces is a cucked thing and I'm glad I left paper a long time ago. But this is a horrible alternative.

I feel like the power level is already kind of high with the premades as well. Not sure how bonkers it gets later on.

>>
>>98377934
Its easy to stay f2p if you just have some patience, they give you enough boosters and wildcards at the outset that you can build a functional deck that will get your daily wins.
>>
>>98378395
You can also not build a deck and play starter duel until you have over 1k wins like me the starter duel GOD.

How bad is standard right now? I haven't played since early FF. Part of the reason I stopped playing was because the entire format was ruled by either insane izzet aggro or combo-control decks that can win by turn 4 if you don't have a counterspell. I know aggro got hit with bans but what about everything else?
>>
>>98383057
Its landfall vs izzet/jeskai right now and its garbage. T4 omniscience is legal and unplayable. Honestly the game is dog shit i only play at work or drunk and high and its fine.
>>
>>98378985
does it release at 12pm EST? another half hour?

Yeah I immediately regret trying to play this game when I booted it up, updated my deck slightly, then fought a niggerish landfall deck.

Absolute retarded format.

It used to be pretty fucking awful a few months ago
Then SoS came out and it got even worse because of le tablet of balance
And now it's even worse because capeshit introduced 0 (zero) playable cards, so you either play a deck that wins by t3 or you lose to Jestrannies

You can get to play top decks if you know what you're doing. A little bit of patience with wildcards and you're good.

>>98383057
Badgermole landfall, Badgermole lifegain, Badgermole ramp. Monwhite enchantments. At least three different versions of blue red dominant decks. Standard Izzet, Jeksai, Sunderflock. Mono black discard. That's about it.

>>98383416
>Exactly how it should be
It was again a big powercreep...
Mindstone, Thor, Namor, Ten Rings, Jennifer, Loki, Avenger Dissassembled, Cosmic Cube, Black Widow...

Thor is brilliant in lessons deck. Even if he dies immediately he can still fetch Accumulate Wisdom or Jeskike Revelations from your graveyard that can decide the match. If he doesn't die, he can clear the board by himself with his damage dealing ability. Once I had just Thor on the board vs. Ouroborid and seven other creatures. Before my turn was over opponent had one earthbended land for a creature.
>>
>>98384084
Nobody is playing Starcage. Too many big threats around. I'm getting easy and fast wins with that deck.
>>
>>98384160
I do >>98369864 (but yeah, that's a meme deck)
>>
>>98384191
Artefacts decks are getting some new cards, but it's pretty obvious that they're keeping them in check. Though why red and blue keep getting fantastic cards is beyond me.
>>
>>98384545
In the Hobbit? I pretty much saw only equipments, which are completely useless, even for creature decks.
>>
TQ
Dimir Faes, but doesn’t having access to Cast Down and Thorn of the Black Rose really hurts the deck. Still having fun tho, the Arena version of Moon-Circuit Hacker is so busted with the scry 2 hability. Also fuck this shit being BO1, that’s so dumbed down.

God i just want a permanent pauper ladder, a man can dream….
>>
>>98372052
This is one of the most retarded, low IQ, “look i suck at the game” post I’ve ever read. Specially when talking about competitive, tournament Magic. Sideboard is and always will be an extension of player skill and meta awareness. Some decks are unstopable if it is on play (i.e burn) and the oppo can’t have a game where it goes first.

“Muuuh other tcgs nowadays don’t have sideboard hurrrr” that’s why they’re all garbage trying to be MTG but not having a fraction of the depth MTG has. If you play BO1 only you literally, unironically never played real Magic.
>>
>>98384733
Not a very good argument when MTG is being propped up by UB commander kiddies. They certainly don't give a shit about your sideboard.

I play paper a ton (mostly a mix of modern/edh), but how's Arena? Can I actually make functioning decks without shelling out shitloads of money? Do people play the other formats on it besides standard?
>>
>>98385102
>Can I actually make functioning decks without shelling out shitloads of money?
It's rough to jump into without either a lot of grinding or spending some initial money. Once you've got all the staples in your preferred formats it then becomes easy to pile up currency and wildcards to make future decks.
>Do people play the other formats on it besides standard?
Yes. I'm pretty sure Brawl (raped duel commander) is more popular than standard. The queue is a bit slow for some formats if you choose Bo3 though.
>>
i just started and aside from just copying whatever tier 1 decks there are, what would you lads recommend as a first constructed deck if you were to go back?

>>
>>98385179
>grinding or shelling out
Eugh. I guess I'll go see if there's any hope of making decent stuff for Brawl out of all the free packs they give.
>Bo1 vs Bo3
Am I crazy for not wanting Bo3? Sure I've played Bo3 with paper prereleases, but the way I envision me playing Arena is as a quickie that doesn't take too long.
