No such a thing IMO but I've been having fun with a character that started at level 12.

Does anyone happen to have an archive of the old wotc art galleries for the books? Figured I'd ask as the last step before internet archive diving each and cleaning them from my pdfs since some one IA are thumbnails or just plain small like this poor black dragon. Mainly just want the monsters because Sam Wood's art is sexxo, but anything is helpful.
Checked forums, there's archived articles but not the art. I did see some others who archived that might have, but never shared it because muh copyright and forum rules.

>>98365503
>What level should a campaign start at? What level should it end at?
Depends on the goal. Level 1 if you want a traditional tense start through dungeons, maybe level 3-4 if you want to start strong enough to get the ball rolling while still feeling small. Start any level you feel is best for what you want them to accomplish session 1 and your plans going forward. End level is whatever they happen to get to before the plot ends or their character motivations are satisfied.
>>
>>98365503
>>Thread Question: What level should a campaign start at? What level should it end at?
In an ideal world, it starts at level one and ends at level twenty, or even a little higher into the low epic levels to let people play around more with high level abilities; some 3e content actually builds towards level thirty! I have never played the game that far, sadly, outside of the Neverwinter Nights PC game.

Otherwise, I think starting in the 4-6 range when characters are cleanly established might be appropriate for a short campaign; Pathfinder 1 and 5e both seem to be designed around the 5-15 range, so it seems like that's the smoothest "feel good" range if you only want to hit on bullet points and cannot engage with all of the content.
>>
>What level should a campaign start at?
Everyone starts the campaign as a level 1 Commoner. You're going to earn that first class level, bitch.

>What level should it end at?
Whatever level you are when people start losing interest.
>>
I have no idea what I'll do with my character once I reach Epic levels.
I might need to retrain some skill points or something to actually be able to use Epic Spells.
>>
What is this thread's favorite spin on domain management and mass battle rules for 3.5? I've been looking at the different options and finding it hard to find a consistent opinion other than AEG's Empire is mediocre.
>>
Does anyone have the updated version of the Ultimate System Reference Document 1.6 by RecapAnon and Tidomann (and others)? Somebody had made some additions and uploaded it in a previous thread years ago and the link expired, unfortunately. There's offline versions of the one already uploaded in srd.dndtools.org floating around, but I'm positive there was an update.

Alternatively, we could get together and update it ourselves if anyone is willing.
>>
>>98371514
I thought Heroes of Battle had mass combat rules but looking through it there's nothing really there for it, it's just very verbose without any crunch. Rather it shrinks the focus down to the PCs in the battle, so the battlefield becomes the dungeon. I'll need to find a better pdf of it since what it does offer are flowcharts and other images which are illegible in my copy.
There's the D&D Rules Cyclopedia which has mass combat stuff but you'll have to convert it to 3rd.
If you want to look at other games, in Pathfinder's Ultimate Campaign book there is a section for mass combat which I think is pretty simple and gets the job done. Same book also has a chapter for domain stuff, though I'm not experienced with it to know if it's any good.
>>
>>98365503
>What level should a campaign start at? What level should it end at?
Level 1. Always level 1. Because I hate getting to level 20 and feeling like I didn't "earn" it because I "cheated" and started at level 4 or 8.

That said, for short adventures or short campaigns, it can be fun to start at higher level.

>>98370981
>I might need to retrain some skill points or something to actually be able to use Epic Spells.
What character? If you screwed yourself out of enough Spellcraft ranks then ask your DM and he'll probably let you retrain. Even a lot of grognard DMs have come around to the idea.

>>98371514
>What is this thread's favorite spin on domain management and mass battle rules for 3.5?
There are some cool books from Sword and Sorcery Press that I forgot the name of but they had domain stuff for 3.5. Maybe it was from Atlas Games Dynasties and Demagogues?
>>
>>98375469
>I thought Heroes of Battle had mass combat rules but looking through it there's nothing really there for it, it's just very verbose without any crunch
Yeah. Other than some cool monster stats and decently-interesting fluff, it's pretty empty as a book. Interesting prestige classes though. The problem with war in D&D 3.5 is that really the best option for a kingdom is to have a few high level PCs who can nuke an entire battlefield while invisible and flying

And if not, PHB2 has some adventure locations that are glorified respecs. Necrotic cradle is a pretty dope place.
>>98375628
Doing some more looking and found there's mass combat rules in the miniatures handbook, a bit more granular than PF and more like a traditional wargame. Check there if you want something officially designed for 3.5, but YMMV on the quality.

My DM is chill as fuck, that will 100% let me and will probably work something out in the veins of what mentioned, since he likes to weave these things into the simulation so to speak.

>Doing some more looking and found there's mass combat rules in the miniatures handbook, a bit more granular than PF and more like a traditional wargame. Check there if you want something officially designed for 3.5, but YMMV on the quality.
Agreed, you could definitely scale it down to 6mm or 15mm if you wanted to do it on tabletop with some historicals or 3D printed miniatures.

For me, I want a system that can simultaneously "autoresolve" battles (with a few rolls) when necessary, but also let me zoom in and have tactical depth and play it out minute-by-minute to an extent. Kind of like Total War games, which I admittedly have only played around 4 hours of in total. But I like the concept of for tabletop. Preferably integrated into a hexmap system so you can run it on a strategic scale easily as well.

>>98375717
Yeah losing 4(?) caster levels doesn't help either. Also lol @ using Dragonlance and Ravenloft-specific stuff on the same character, but honestly, I wouldn't have an issue with it. I guess you still manage to hit 9th level spells, so you just need the extra ranks. Which can be kinda hard for divine casters, I actually have to get it in gear for my own cleric/radiant servant of Pelor, as level 20 is coming soon. It seems like we have similar tastes in character.
>>
>>98375921
>Yeah losing 4(?) caster levels doesn't help either.
3 caster levels (1st lvl KotR, 1st lvl OC, Crusader), yes. That was sort of by design, nerfing the character a bit while also getting some cool abilities.

>It seems like we have similar tastes in character.
I was going to go with RSoP if the DM didn't OK the Dragonlance class, funnily enough.
So yeah. Indeed.
The only reason I didn't do that is because I thought it would be cool for him to get both 9th lvl spells and a new maneuver as his capstone so to speak to represent both sides of the character.

The cool thing is that it's decently multiclass friendly, since the non-tob classes also advance your Initiator Level (the caster level equivalent) two levels for one IL pace, meaning that you can get higher level maneuvers with feats or dips.
Could I have gone all in on RKV? Yeah. But the idea was never for the character to be a "ToB character", just a dabbler.

Would you guys be interested in a collection of prestige classes / rules built around rune magic, but using the actual Elder Futhark / Younger Futhark Norse runes? Or would that mess it up? I have ideas for a few, but would using real-life runes be weird? I like the Norse ones and their symbology and making up a fantasy rune alphabet would just end with me making not!norse ones trying to fit that alphabet.

But also maybe it'd be better for them to just be generic and not have any relation to real history or cultures? I don't know.
>>
>>98381667
Yes but I'd like for those to either interface with the already existing runes (of which there are a few implementations) or just have them be called something else (glyphs?).
>>
>>98379715
In a general "3.x is kinda cool" way or the PF specific stuff compared to 3.5e?
>>
>>98382621
both, also I like the pf1 APs as well as the ease of converting 3.5e campaigns to it
>>
>>98382639
Yeah. The APs and Bestiaries are the best things out of PF1e IMHO.
>>
>>98382469
>already existing runes (of which there are a few implementations)
What are they? I only know of the prestige classes associated with them (runesmith from Races of Stone and runescarred berserker from Unapproachable East and runecaster from Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting)

Glyph of warding as an SLA would definitely be a thing for a lot of those classes, plus extra options for it besides programming it with spells or straight damage.
>>
>>98383808
>What are they?
Yeah, those classes (and probably more) and, I believe the FR also has a sort of scroll like runes just like there are candles, tatoos, etc.

>Glyph of warding as an SLA would definitely be a thing for a lot of those classes
Have one of them be the guy that specialize in that Glyph Seal item too. That could be cool.
>>
>>98383969
That would be cool. I think I'd make it a lot easier to store spells like that in the glyphs. Maybe a runemaster who focused on glyphs of warding. Or can do something similar at lower levels to make traps. That'd probably be for the spellcaster prestige classes. I also will need to look at Runecaster to make sure I'm not treading on its toes.
>>
>>98377676
Hydras, they have built in pounce IIIRC and shittons of attacks.
>>
>>98375921
>autoresolve
I guess if you really want some expediency you could pull from that pathfinder section and boil everything down to modifier stacking for one decisive roll. This strategy vs that strategy, these army characteristics vs that army characteristics, and do two opposed rolls with those modifiers and depending on the difference is how well/badly one won or lost.

What do you guys think is the essence of what makes 3.5e 3.5e?
I'm feeling the itch and thinking about writing my own ruleset and I'll incorporate things that I like about 3.5e, like the symmetry between PCs and NPCs/creatures, slot based spell-casting, multiclassing, among other things.
Heavily tweaked or changed to fit the new mechanics, of course, but I'll try to retain the concepts and/or feel.
And since I'm feeling bold, it won't be a D20 based system. Gonna try for something that's "mathless" on the table since I never fucked around with dice pools before.
>>
>>98390313
Options! Lots and lots and lots of options, for your character, for the world, for the monsters, for the loot, for the spells, etc.
>>
>>98390336
Oh, absolutely. A first class consideration will be the ability to somewhat easily convert 3.5e material to the system.
>>
>>98390313
The main things are PC/NPC build parity, a wide breadth of options in classes/skills/feats/equipment/spells, and prestige classes which reward you for building towards them with complex requirements matched with thematic rewards.
>>
>>98367714
why would you want to both start and end the campaign with level 1 commoners though
>>
>>98375921
I ended up tweaking the "Worlds Without Number" faction system for the "Autoresolve" thing you want. A faction asset is a piece on the board of the "World Map" and they interact according to WWN rules, but if the players meet that asset in normal D&D gameplay, I turn it into something that makes sense.
The WWN assets are descriptive enough you can easily understand that an "Invincible Legion" force asset is an army of 5000 dudes and support staff.
For the tactical layer you want, there's a few Mass Combat systems out there. The ones I've found are:
AEG Empire
AEG Mercenaries
AEG War
Cry Havoc
Fields of Blood
Strongholds and Dynasties
D&D 3.5 - Wars: Mass Combat Rules https://olddungeonmaster.com/2012/12/30/dd-wars-mass-combat-rules/
PF1e Ultimate Campaign

I haven't really had a chance to look at many of these in depth, but some of them use completely different stats from the Monster Manual, which is a dealbreaker for me, because I don't want to have to restat every Monster to make it usable with the system. I want them to use the standard D&D stats.

Nogames often think their inane memeshit is actually entertaining.
>>
My dumbass just realized what's wrong with hags in 5e. All faerie creatures are supposed to be a closed loop. They don't need mortals to breed with to create more of themselves. Dryads can just breed with satyrs. Hags need humans because they were never fey to begin with. They are fiendish corrupted humans who need humans to create more of themselves, therefore they cannot have come from "feywild". It's a leftover logical fallacy that turns into a chicken or the egg situation. Most people don't even think about this because the Internet is saturated with lore retcons.

>>
>>98395167
hags are always a problem
>>
>>98395167
I'm a conspiracy autist, so naturally retcons can't fool me for long. I went down the rabbit hole with AI and started wandering why 5e lore had so many loopholes. Turns out everything in 2e and 3e made perfect sense before Hasbro oversights screwed with the lore.

Hags are monstrous humanoids with fiendish influences, hence their nature. Faerie influence doesn't even work the way 5e frames it. It should make them more faerie-like and nature-oriented, not monstrous unless it's a curse like the Fomorian 4e curse. A hag that spent time in the plane of Faerie or Feywild should turn into a hippie druidic witch, a fey-touched humanoid. Basically everything about hags being fey is screaming that they are not: soul-dealing with fiends, Baba Yaga. I distinctively remember Baba Yaga being one of those "most powerful beings in DnD" often talked about in the late 2000's Internet forums. She was a human turned witch that basically gave the middle finger to all the other gods in the pantheon and lived on her own terms. I got into DnD lore again much later and wander why she is an archfey now. They basically downgraded her and made her this boring fey that sits in the Feywild doing nothing. They turned that Frankenstein Greyhawk character Yggwilv/Tasha/Zybilna into another archfey which totally broke the laws of the multiverse. She just snapped her fingers and became an archfey with the Baba Yaga retcon.

There are so many damn problems everywhere. Succubi is another. Going form a chaotic evil manifestation of lust in 3.5e to nonsensical Neutral Evil mercenaries. Malcanthet is now just a CEO of her Abyssal layer with nothing special going for her. The succubi are not tied to her anymore. 5e claims succubi and incubi can breed with each other, so why are they even trying to get souls in the first place? They should settle down and deal in commerce.

Caster level isn't necessarily an issue thanks to Practiced Spellcaster.
The real drawback is delaying the progression, which you can most likely afford in the "average campaign".

Does anyone here 'member or still use Fantasy Craft?
It's one of my favorite systems, but sadly between lukewarm reception at launch and poor handling post launch it never really caught on.
Apologies if this is off-topic, It is technically D20 OGL, but pretty far-off from 3.PF.
>>
>>98400379
Heard of it and some anons have briefly discussed it in the past I think, but I don't really know what standout features it has compared to 3.5e.
I imagine it's not that compatible with 3.5e content (classes, races, spells, creatures, tempates, etc), right?
>>
>>98400434
The three largest standout features I'd say would be trying to somewhat tackle caster supremacy without totally killing their identity, actually functioning as a toolbox for a variety of fantasy rather than being so setting specific, and the pretty robust NPC creation system.
Although each of these features tends to be pretty love or hate it, coming from D&D.

And yes, it's broadly speaking D20, but it's like three layers removed from 3.5. To compare to Pathfinder. Pathfinder looks like this:
3rd Edition > 3.5 > Pathfinder
Fantasy Craft is this:
3rd Edition > D20 Modern > Spycraft > Fantasy Craft
Things can be ported and there's even guidelines for the monster side of things, but it does take some heavy lifting on the GM's part.

Thank you so much for your work. I truly believe that things like these are necessary for the essential continuation of 3.x.

I've been toying with the idea of devoting all my worth into creating a workable version of 5e.tools for 3.x. I just simply have no programming knowledge so it'd be entirely vibecoded by Claude lol. I have all the data from the collections around here, like in OP, so I figure the first step would be to sort all of it into data tables.
>>
>>98400797
If there's one thing Claude can vibecode rather well are websites, so that's not the worst idea ever. Specially if you can provide clear references for the robot to base stuff like layout and usability on.

I like actually looking at the code (and writing a good portion of it myself) so I use the Claude Code extension for Visual Studio code, but if you want to go full autonomous, you can unironically, just download Claude code desktop and explain the situation to it.
Web development is such a known, solved domain that it'll essentially tell you everything you need and ask you the relevant questions.
I guess one advice I can give is to go look for some "skill" files to at least more or less have the robot follow some standards instead of just doing things wildly different ways in different parts of the code making things harder for it.
Oh, and have it write and run tests for everything. That way it can detect if anything broke and fix it.
And create a github repo to make it easy to keep a changelog and revert to a previous version of the code if necessary.
Since you'll fully vibecode the thing be ready to burn through a lot of tokens.

It's basically ready made prompt snippets in .md file format instructing the model to behave a certain way, program using certain standards, etc.
There's repositories for such things out there and most harnesses (claude code, codex, etc) automatically load these things or expose them to the model or give you commands to manually load them.
I think you can even download those directly from claude code desktop?
Not sure.
Anyhow.

Well, I've been at it. Restructured the files to be usable for the purposes and across 3e, 3.5, PF1 and all third-party, there's 3207 pdfs at 98gb. Fuck me. Now I'm creating a rigorous schema to pull all pertinent data across spells, feats, races, items, rule systems, templates, stat blocks, classes.

Lemme know if there's anything you can think I should be tracking outside of those.

The entire point of these threads is we like chatting about D&D with each other, and you're the one that's been busting ass actually making content instead of just yapping with the rest of us. You've more than earned the right to toot your horn now and again.
>>
>>98411572
Took a look at the PDF. I really like the work here overall, you clearly put more care into the balance and themes than most. It helps you weren't making a prestige class with the mindset of "this is what would make my donutsteel OC incredibly strong" and were instead thinking of what the average player would actually use and want to build around. I did take some incidental notes.

>Bone Archivist
Seems deliberately weaker due to the raw strength of full spellcasting, but kindred component in particular seems anemic. Allowing necklace slots to increase DCs at 4th level without consumption might be overkill, but the play pattern of writing down how many bone shards of XYZ species are in the bag of holding also seems like it’d get annoying. Seems cool overall.

>Choral Convoker
Greater Planar Harmonics specifies only one use of bardic music can be spent per cast, but other abilities seem to imply that as well for their effects. You might want to explicitly call out which effects stack with each other (i.e. using Planar Harmonics and Unearthly Resilience on a single cast of summon monster), and which if any can expend multiple uses of themselves on a single cast. Also Unearthly Resilience seems like it might get out of hand with the ability to get multiples of a lower-level creature. 1d4+1 Lemures that have 4d8+3 HP with their DR and resistances is a lot of bulk for a 8th level character to pull out of the aether, and that’s possible by using Planar Harmonics to turn SMIII into SMIV then breaking that down to the SMII list.
>>
>>98411572
>>98411795
>Dread Arbalester
They desperately need something to help with reloading. They’re clearly built around the pattern of using a standard action to shoot and their move action to reload with the Rapid Reload feat, but that’s still too slow. Maybe something to let them reload during a move action and/or reload without provoking AoO. For clarity Bore Shot should probably be reworded to be an upgrade of Deadeye Shot but still specify any extra damage dice only apply to the closest target. Maybe the first target hit, throw ‘em a bone.

>Master of Mirrors
I have minor concerns about Tandem Riposte because Reflections can spread out pretty far as long as they’re all within 5 feet of each other. There’s arrangements where this can warp you 30 feet to stab a guy. Not a huge deal and feeds into the flavor, but something to note given keeping track of which one of you is real is already going to be a hassle.

>Mistweaver
Full BAB/full casting seems odd

>Priest of the Radiant Hand
Slightly concerned that this seems like a strict upgrade to Cleric with trivial entry requirements
Scrollsurge Adept
Unsure if a character can reliably have this many scrolls on hand to make it count but that’s fine

>Swarm Serenader
No notes

>Torchbearer
This class is already pretty weak and precludes fighting with a magic weapon in the offhand, you don’t need to twist the knife by making them take Alertness. BAB +3 as a prereq rather than +5 would also help the class be available at levels where incidental nonmagical fire damage is helpful.
>>
>>98411572
>>98411797
>Twinblade Exemplar
Wording is inconsistent about bonuses applying to double weapons and/or two weapons of the same type. Might also want to specify how the class abilities work with multiweapon fighting.

>Woad Rager
Might be worth explicitly clarifying that you can’t apply multiple patterns at once by painting yourself multiple times. Thrashing Bull needs a limit on wiping it off and reapplying it to get more additional uses of rage. Dual pattern could probably be dropped to 6th level with triple pattern at 10th.

>Woad Warden
How do Woad Warden and Woad Rager’s paints interact? Barbarian/Druid multiclass with two PrCs is a bit of a fucker but it could happen.

>you clearly put more care into the balance and themes than most.
Thanks. The flavor to me is really important. Wanted to make them "generic" i.e. no proper names or links to specific organizations. Might make some factions for later releases.

>but kindred component in particular seems anemic
Yeah I felt like +1 or +2 DC stacking with everything else could be strong. But a lot of monsters don't have skeletons or bones, so it is already less effective there. It really depends how diverse the dungeon is.

Bookkeeping is definitely an issue for that PrC. I can't deny that.

>Greater Planar Harmonics specifies only one use of bardic music can be spent per cast, but other abilities seem to imply that as well for their effects.
Yeah that was kind of the intent. I should fix that. I put the hard cap on effective spell level increase so you can't go too high, and I feel like it isn't super game breaking if they can max out a ton of summons by sinking all their bardic music uses into it. But still that wasn't the intent so I should fix it.

>Also Unearthly Resilience seems like it might get out of hand with the ability to get multiples of a lower-level creature. 1d4+1 Lemures that have 4d8+3 HP with their DR and resistances is a lot of bulk for a 8th level
Yeah it should probably be one use per creature summoned.

Don't like the idea of that adding more bookkeeping since a player might apply it to some, and not apply it to others, but hey, maybe that's their problem.

12d8 average hp to carve through is a bit much. I felt like the prestige class was a bit weak in that it still couldn't quite keep up with wizard summoning late-game, but maybe that's fine.
>>
>>98411797
>They desperately need something to help with reloading.
Fair. At least for heavy crossbows. I wanted to make it a "pick abilities from a list" prestige class but I didn't have enough really good ideas for it. I also figured a heavy crossbow user wouldn't mind standing mostly still and reloading to fire a single penetrating shot. But I have noticed a lot of high level combats require you to move around a LOT and I don't want this PrC to end up like Scout.... which it kinda did. So I might add that.

>Reflections can spread out pretty far as long as they’re all within 5 feet of each other. There’s arrangements where this can warp you 30 feet to stab a guy
Yeah I thought they all had to be within 5 feet of you....WTF. Yeah upon rereading that that makes the spell extremely weird.
>There’s arrangements where this can warp you 30 feet to stab a guy.
I mean I think you would still have to be able to reach a creature to opportunity attack it. I can't think of another example of an issue like this though. It would be a problem though because it's not supposed to be able to warp you or superposition you among all the images.

Good catch. I can't find a rule that explicitly states you can only AoO a creature whose square you threaten. But I also can't think of a time when you would be able to AoO someone you didn't threaten.
>>
>>98411797
>Full BAB/full casting seems odd
That's an actual mistake in the case of BaB, it was supposed to be 1/2 level. That is an absolute must-fix. I plan to do an update / fixed version anyway (thank god Drivethru supports that) and that is the first thing I'll be changing.

As for the full casting... I feel like a class based around needing to cast another spell for a "setup" still deserves full casting? I know mist spells are already very strong just by themselves, but in practice the smoke works both ways and a lot of people fail to utilize them really well. I mean you can hide in your obscuring mist and have pseudo-displacement at level 1, but you lose line of sight and so basically have to throw out AoEs. And that's assuming your DM isn't a hard-ass who makes you roll for some kind of deviation / missed direction when shooting fireballs out of a smoke.

So I've just never seen the spells being that powerful. Solid fog, stinking cloud, etc are powerful due to secondary effects. But most of the time people just move out of the fog. Maybe I am just not running them right. But I felt like it was boosting an underpowered archetype.

>Priest of the Radiant Hand
>Slightly concerned that this seems like a strict upgrade to Cleric with trivial entry requirements
That's fair. I think at least requiring Empower Spell (which I admittedly have taken with my current cleric) means it's a bit out of the way for many clerics. But then, I don't know what most clerics do with their feats, aside from DMM Persist builds.

>Scrollsurge Adept
>Unsure if a character can reliably have this many scrolls on hand to make it count but that’s fine
Yeah I was considering running the math on it but they would definitely have to be scribing those scrolls. I don't know if it's viable to run as a character. Didn't want to overtune it.
>>
>>98411797
>Torchbearer
>This class is already pretty weak
I ran out of ideas to make it strong. These are really good suggestions though. Yeah considering I compared it to Aragorn, who probably wouldn't waste a feat on Alertness, it definitely shouldn't have that. Torchbearer was one of my first ideas and there just wasn't much to do with it that didn't trip into extreme supernatural territory. I think I'll tone it down to be an early level prestige class. I love the concept but it's hard to make work.

>>98411802
>Wording is inconsistent about bonuses applying to double weapons and/or two weapons of the same type
Yeah that's a good point, I forgot to do that with all the abilities.
>Might also want to specify how the class abilities work with multiweapon fighting.
Oh yeah that's a whole can of worms. But important definitely. Never know when a girallon might show up.

>Thrashing Bull needs a limit on wiping it off and reapplying it to get more additional uses of rage.
That's a really good catch, thank you.
>Dual pattern could probably be dropped to 6th level with triple pattern at 10th.
Really? I considered something like that for the Warden cause it's trying to compete with Wild Shape progression did it? is it at all tempting to take in place of more druid for better wild shape? but not for the rager. I could see it though.

>How do Woad Warden and Woad Rager’s paints interact? Barbarian/Druid multiclass with two PrCs is a bit of a fucker but it could happen.
They use the same mechanic so I imagine they'd be the same limit. I should probably specify that though. You never know. I didn't want to create an entire rules subsystem and break up the formatting, but I probably should honestly. Especially since I am gonna re-use it sort of for the rune-related PrCs I plan to make.

Anyway thank you VERY much for this in-depth analysis and critique. I should've posted it more here first, but at least I can update it and people can get fixed version.
>>
>>98420843
Happy to help, and I'm glad my criticism was taken in good faith. I can't stress enough the degree to which these are head and shoulders above most homebrew stuff (and even most of the splats, honestly). Relative balance is always an iffy target when base classes like cleric and wizard are already miles better as a 1-20 class than most actual builds, so I think what you've done of lasering in on playstyles, themes, and concepts then making them functional is a really smart way of going about it.
>>
>>98420812
For the mistweaver, it was specifically full BAB + full casting that confused me, half BAB and full casting makes complete sense. I agree with your reasoning that it's both potentially powerful but very contingent on battlefield conditions and party playstyle so there's no sense punishing them.

The only dragon fight I had was where the PCs visited an illumian city and discovered that one of the PCs had been named in a prophecy long ago, and the other people named by the prophecy had been kept prisoner, and they were all forced to fight a dragon that was demanding tribute from the city. The dragon's lair was in an underground temple with lots of columns for the characters to hide behind to help avoid its breath weapon, which was a line of lightning so it made sense a thick stone column would shelter them.

I've been at it with dedicated prompting for over a week now. It's... a lot. I'm spending a huge amount of time nailing down a genuinely generalized extraction so I can basically plug any sourcebook into it and spit out data tables with minimal error. I'm convinced this will be much quicker in the long-term than just sitting down and having Claude read out tables page-by-page, book-by-book. Am I crazy?

>>98417734
Thanks a bunch man. Claude had already got pretty much all the way to what you had over the 2-3 days I'd spent on it up to that point. There were some 3-4 features that were used as part of my generalization transition. So that was about a day saved of me tardspamming prompts lol

>>
>>98444370
>>98447624
Forgot to actually answer the question.
It was both the actual mechanics (metabreath fucked us up) and the DM's shenanigans and encounter design.
>>
>>98365503
So, a mid-level character can clear a pretty high sacrifice (knowledge religion) check, let's say DC 20, easily, to get 60 EXP towards crafting magic items. To directly use a soul in item creation yields 10 exp. Effigies are some of the most interesting (read: broken) mechanically of all constructs, due to template-stacking shenanigans.

My BBEG is a weapons designer for an enemy kingdom that kills criminals in elaborate ceremonies to Vecna (He can clear a DC 50 check easily, and a DC 70 if he pushes and uses all available boosts), which almost completely offsets the XP cost of crafting effigies (80 XP per HD, reduced 25% with Legendary Artisan to 60 XP per HD), with a DC 50 giving him 150 craft XP and 70 giving him 210. Templates that increase power without increasing HD also give him increased effectiveness with no increased cost.

So the kingdom the party's in is fighting an industrialized construct war machine. The prisoners of the enemy kingdom and captured enemies are turned into production resources. The campaign centers around doing things like sabotaging the BBEG's supply lines, blowing up production centers, and freeing prisoners behind enemy lines, with the threat of capture and sacrifice ever-present (Higher-HD PCs would yield a much higher bonus to the sacrifice check). Opinions/Thoughts/Comments?

It had really cohesive systems and a lot of flexibility regarding character creation for a single book. I haven't looked at the books in maybe 10 years, so forgive my recollection difficulties.
You could have competent skill monkeys, non-combatant Courtiers who could still contribute, mages were nerfed but not massively (IIRC, they were 1 spell level behind standard casters, needed Spellcraft checks to cast, and used MP (per encounter), had decently balanced spell known limits, and spells were also nerfed generally), priests used a different system with Paths that unlocked abilities (corresponding to domains, IIRC).
It had very solid martial feat chains (standardized around Beginner/Advanced/Master feats, or something like that) plus maneuvers you could unlock with proficiencies (or was it skill points?)
The races (plus racial feats for level 1), could cover a huge chunk of the typical races, and there were guidelines for creating homebrew races on the forum. The NPC creation system was based on scaling abilities (I.e. if your NPC was Skilled VIII, at level 1 he might have a +12 bonus, at level 10 it might be +26), which was pretty neat since it could compress an NPC stat sheet to a single line in many cases, but you'd have to do the uncompressing yourself later as a GM.
It had a system for abstract Wealth that worked decently, though I prefer counting coins. (FC was silver-based, and I prefer that to gp even now).
Characters were quite front-loaded. Often, you could have a core concept filled out at level 1-3 and just focus on improvement and breadth from there.

Man, now I feel like digging up the books again.

Savage Tide anon here. We're getting into Tamoachan. Is there a good way to efficiently build NPCs? I have a lot of stats to adjust
>>
>>98460587
I'm not familiar with Savage Tide, but in general you don't need to get too in detail on NPC stats. If you want to get extremely quick and dirty while improvising you can just give an NPC CR as a bonus to things they're good at, CR/2 to things they're okay at, and CR/4 to things they're bad at. Works for BAB, skill rolls, whatever.

If you have a little more prep you can make statblocks for archetypes of NPCs and just pull from those. It can make things a little samey but it's better than trying to allocate skill points to 40 dipshits.

Shield Wall from heroes of battle.
Block Arrow from heroes of battle IF you're gonna fight a lot of humanoid enemies with bows. Ask the GM about this one, or at least ask if you can retrain it later.
Phalanx Fighting from Complete Warrior is okay, but you're limited to a light weapon.

What I'd do is max out Strength, hopefully to at least 16 or 17 to start. If not, just do standard fighter stat spread.
Point Blank Shot, Brutal Throw, Power Attack at level 1.

Adding to this, is there any way to realistically get out of combat capacity?
I'm so used to mages and high skill classes that going back to fighter is... well, kinda puzzling.
Sure, 'FEATS', but then what?
>>
>>98469985
Add to this, would the exotic armors from Races of Stone be worth the cost?
My DM gives us 3k gold at game start, because he tends to starve us of money until a certain point where we get a windfall, usually level 10.

So whats the best way to find an adventure from an old dungeon or dragon or polyhedron magazine that you remember from the 90s but not the name of or the issue or the exact year? I only remember it ends in a harpy cave.
>>
>>98471517
i actually found it. Dungeon 051 from 1995!

>>98471998
Fucking hell anon.
Congratulations.

>>98472003
i just remembered that the cover had blues and greens. the setting was a swamp and a green dragon was wrapping around an adventurer. The memory was wrong but close enough to find it pretty quick.

Gonna get to play in a gestalt game next month. Is double caster a meme? I was thinking bard and sorcerer. Never done anything higher than level 5 before so I don't know how high power can skyrocket.
>>
>>98474882
Double caster has a high ceiling if you go all in on getting two lists worth of buffs that don't have a lot of overlap, but generally speaking you'll still only be casting one spell per round so all you're getting from two lists is increased versatility.
>>
>>98474920
Everyone else is going melee niggas so I was gonna go all in on buffs, yeah. Song, bard spells, wizard buffs etc.
My other idea was to do something so I can slap if I have to, something from Tome of Battle sounded kinda cool. I come from Pathfinder so I'm not sure what all is a smart choice, mostly going for flavor/what looks flashy.
>>
>>98474952
Pf1e or 2e?
>>
>>98475053
1e
>>
>>98475053
>>98475058
I hit submit too early sorry
1e is where I started but I only did about 10 sessions of that, I have more experience in 2e but 1e/3.5 just looks more fun to me in general.
>>
>>98475058
Gotcha, main difference between 1e and 3.5 you'll notice is that the rules are a bit broader overall, there's a lot of stuff that Paizo balanced in an effort to "clean up" certain things that annoyed them about 3.5, so you'll notice for instance that there's like 5 or 6 more skills than you're used to, like for instance Spot and Listen being what Perception used to be combined into. For the most part the spells are like 90% similar so just look for stuff that you remember being interesting in PF that has a 3.5 version and most likely it will work the same way you'll want it to.
>>
>>98475064
You can do two casters, but the biggest thing you're concerned about in gestalt is action economy. Being a wizard/cleric sounds great until you realize that on any given turn you're either a wizard or a cleric and never a wizard/cleric. Of course you could always specialize in buff spells on your cleric side and active participation on your wizard side, but the key here is to define "what is this bringing to my character at any given time" and making sure those two answers aren't in conflict.
>>
>>98475073
Yeah I noticed perception/stealth being split into two, also skill ranks out the ASS
>>98475221
That's something I hadn't really considered, thank you for pointing it out. Two casters gives me a LOT of utility but I can't really use them both at the same time, whereas doing something like Swordsage would give me maneuvers(some of which also offer utility) that can compliment/ease the resource consumption of my other half while keeping me somewhat competent in melee. I think this is the path.
>>
>>98475301
It's also the case that Prestige Classes were a LOT more of a thing in 3.5 compared to PF1e and they straight up don't exist really in PF2e. There are a ton of them to choose from, but if any catch your eye make sure to ask your GM about them first since you can get real silly with Prestige classes when you're gestalting.
>>
>>98475328
If anything that might be understating it, Prestige Classes are really the core of what I consider to be 3.5's design ethos because it's the locus of mechanics-as-flavor, fiddly character building, and endless player options.
>>
>>98475328
>>98476640
I took a look around them, I REALLY like Sublime Chord. Getting to do full spell progression is really cool. I don't know if we'll get there but I'm excited for a chance to try it out.
>>
>>98475328
It's an interesting conundrum between 3.5 and pf1 like I do think all classes should be viable 1-20 by itself (which pathfinder does a somewhat better job at imo) but it just doesn't scratch the same itch as my fighter leveling up normally and then coming across a thayan (not actually thayan but a reworked version for our campaign) and swearing their fealty and going down the thayan knight prestige class. (making your class mechanics bend to the story).
>>
>>98478014
Also I know you can still do this in pf1 but idk it just doesn't feel the same and I can't fully articulate it, sorry
>>
>>98478028
No it makes sense, Paizo specifically gutted many of the Prestige classes and how they interact with their original classes in PF1e in response to how ubiquitous they are in 3.5.
>>
>>98478362
My issue with pf prcs is that instead of focusing and strengthening specific class features like 3.5, they just add completely different capabilities that do not build on existing chassis.

Favorite 7th level Cleric spell?
>>
>>98481199
It's not a great and super situational spell but consumptive field greater can be a really thematic and cool opener in a crowd and the bonus to caster level even though short can be powerful. Say at level 13 you cast consumptive field greater and kill 7 peasants that gives you +7 caster levels and then cast word of chaos (not recommended if allies are near) you are treating your caster level as 20 for the effects.
>>
>>98483011
>>98481199
The different Get FUCKED spells the cleric has at 7th level is definitely my favorite set of spells in the game.
Any way to make your caster level higher for such purposes for a Good Guy, tho?
>>
>>98483891
Nothing comes to mind for boosting caster level to that extreme for good guys. It is kind of wild that a level 13 evil cleric can just insta kill no save level 10/ 10hd creatures with that combo with one turn of prep.

I'm fishing for interesting spells for my god guy that's right no in the middle of the ecipse of evil where shadows pop up everywhere, people get slightly meaner and or completely insane etc.
Bastion of Good is looking like a cool thing to DMM persist.
Walking with a persistent bubble of invulnerability essentially.
Might be a bit cheesy.
>>
>>98484043
You could homebrew a mix of fimbulwinter/mass morality undone spell. Depending how you want the story to go you could always have it made permanent and have it tied to a magical item. Maybe use Major Iceaheart as the template for this item where each morning it auto casts a 24 hour version of morality undone.

Wow. Somehow there are letters missing randomly.

He just got access to lvl 7 spells so I've been doing some research.
Summon Aspect of Bahamut seems pretty thematic whats with all the dragon shenanigan happening in the campaign.
Also, during the eclipse, Spells with the [Light] descriptor, the Healing subschool, the Divination school, or Spells that manipulate Positive Energy require a spell slot 1 level higher to cast (e.g., Cure Light Wounds becomes a 2nd-level spell slot).
So THAT sucks balls.

>>98484778
Not the DM, a player. But I like your ideas.

Not really. It's not a long-night winter is coming situation. It should be over in 3 or so days.
Unless this is one of the rarer ones that last weeks, then we are fucked.

Hey guys, I know this isn't "technically" your field, but you all seem to be pretty amenable to your content creators in this thread, so if you're okay with the content being PF1e themed I made a YT video based on this project I've been working on.

>>
>>98487097
There's not a huge difference beyond PF stuff being more anime-faggy than D&D.
>>
>>98487430
I could write a book on the ways PF1 is worse than 3.5 but Paizo beat me to the punch and sold it as a rules manual
>>
>>98487430
I disagree. From mechanics to design philosophy to even the general sense of aesthetics, there's quite a bit of distance from PF 1e and D&D 3.5e, even if they are (generally) compatible.
>>
>>98487442
Aight then, I'll bite. Give me specifics. Things that would genuinely impact gameplay. Add to that; it's gotta be something that you have to stop and say "Actually you can't do that because it works differently in PF1".
>>

Fliers are immune to trip. That's off the top olf my head, instantly.

That's because they incorporated the Fly skill; any damage you take will flying forces a DC20 iirc Fly check, or you fall.

Heaven's Trumpet sounds really good, but my guy is not a DC caster.
Plus, I could just Persist Dragons Breath and spam a paralyzing breath, I think.
Lots of stuff from the BoED.
I really like this out of game research aspect.
And once we have some downtime (it might take IRL years lol) I'll have my character research some new spells too. >>98484778 gave me the idea.
>>
>>98488879
Ew. Why add a concentration check to flying?
>>
>>98490119
Because if you're locked into a 1-20 build by the game design, character builds aren't allowed to have weaknesses. God forbid a melee-focused party struggle against harpies and have to ready attacks or find cover.
>>
Sell me on Incarnum. I have only ever heard of it, but never met anyone interested on using it, is it just not any good?
>>
>>98491814
It's not uber powerful but seems functional enough when I last looked at it. I think the best builds are Totemists stacking dozens of Natural Attacks or the like.
Numbers aside, I fucking love the idea and how it works.
It's such an unique "magic but not spellcasting" system.
>>
>>98491814
It's soul stuff. The stuff that physically makes souls, or something. Imagine abusing souls to do cool stuff.

>>98491856
He rite. Pretty much the only optimization stuff in there. Is it Incarnate or Soulborn that's the shitty caster one?

Either way, don't bother with the shitty caster one. It's shit.
>>
>>98488879
No, it's a DC 10 to lose 10 feet of altitude, and it's completely irrelevant for almost every flying creature in the game because it's so low and their bonuses are so high. Are you Small or smaller? Bonus to Fly checks. Do you have a Good or Perfect flight speed? That's a +4 or +8. Hitting things to drop them only matters when PCs with class levels are hit, because they are likely armored and have no ranks in Fly, just what the spell gives them. Hitting enemies doesn't fucking do anything while tripping did.
>>
>>98491995
Incarnate is the not-caster one, and it's fine. Rough around the edges and requires you building them specifically. Soulborn is the not-Paladin of the book, and is worse than a Paladin straight up or worse at soulmelds than a Fighter sinking all of their feats into Essentia related stuff. Absolute garbage class.
>>
>>98491814
Some other points about incarnum.

It meshes really well with other classes. The whole system is available in feat form, which makes it great on anyone with some feats to spare, and therefore incredibly approachable and versatile. Best synergy with warlocks and psions (there's a somewhat famous psychic warrior build that uses incarnum to pseudo-persist powers).

Necrocarnum is really cool, but the prestige class for it is completely worthless. You have to invest HP for it to work, which the class makes more efficient, but the trick is that you can just invest temp HP and the fact you never get it back is, well, already the case.
>>
>>98487527
Can't sneak attack with flasks.
>>
>>98492792
A bullshit rule interaction anyway that only serves white room optimizers.
There is no scenario that you can call that remotely balanced against rule assumptions and math formula; it's another example of 3.5 failing as a game system.
>>
>>98493362
No.
>>
>>98493362
I don't think most of 3.5 was balanced against its own assumptions or math. But even then, the only way flask Rogue gets abusive is with Ring of Blinking abuse to auto-flatfoot every enemy in the game without Uncanny Dodge which is solved with a single clause, because under normal circumstances, economically flat-footing enemies at range is hard and so is being within 30 ft to full attack enemies while doing so. It's not consistently better than a Greater Manyshot user or Crossbow Sniper and takes about as many feats to use as both of those. And before it's a TWF Rapid Shot mess that throws out 8d6 touch attacks of death, you're probably throwing one or two 2d6 to 4d6 flasks.

I don't conceptually see it as any different from sneak attacking with Ray of Frost and there's a whole PrC built for that.
>>
>>98495257
>I don't conceptually see it as any different from sneak attacking with Ray of Frost and there's a whole PrC built for that.
Requires actual time and investment, compared to simply money.
>>
>>98496418
Flask Rogue takes a ton of investment to hit the level people consider it abusive at and you're still going to run face-first into full attacks being difficult to pull off when you need to be 30 ft from an enemy for them to do more than tickle.
