Still requesting aid for the build of my Champion for PF2E - Strength of Thousands. Currently Level 5

>Level 1: Versatile Human: Fleet, Natural Ambition: Desperate Prayer, Deity Domain: Might, Lay on Hands
>Level 2: Nimble Reprisal, Bon Mot
>Level 2FA: Sorcerer Dedication, Angelic Bloodline
>Level 4: Aura of Courage, Battle Medicine
>Level 4FA: Basic Sorcerer Spellcasting
>Level 6: Expand Aura/Smite, Assurance: Diplomacy
>Level 6FA:
>Level 8: Expand Aura/Smite, Evangelize
>Level 8FA: Bloodline Breadth
>Level 9: Multitalented* (I don't know what to grab, if anything, with Multitalented
>Level 10: Radiant Armament, Powerful Leap.
>Level 10FA:
>Level 12: Blessed Counterstrike, Consult the Spirits.
>Level 12FA: Expert Sorcerer Spellcasting
>Level 14: Divine Reflexes.
>Level 14FA:
>Level 16: Instrument of Zeal.
>Level 16FA:
>Level 18: Celestial Form/Retributive Focus/Swift Retribution, Divine Guidance.
>Level 18FA: Master Sorcerer Spellcasting
>Level 20: Sacred Defender.
>Level 20FA:

The DM has said I can use my free archetype empty levels (I don't know if there are feats I want in sorcerer for the Angelic Bloodline stuff, or to use them on Eagle Knight or Mauler or Marshal or one of those Dedications) on non-sorcerer stuff provided I do advance my spellcasting.

Any advice is appreciated.

The rest of the party is an Alchemist/Demolitionist, Exemplar/Druid, and Guardian/Thaumaturge.
>>
>>98387390
>GM lets Alchemist go Demolitionist and Guardian go Thaumaturge but stonewalls Exemplar from you and also forces you to take spellcasting with FA
Idk, Oracle for cursebound actions or Psychic for beefed cantrips (most likely Guidance)
>>
>>98387390
Oh yeah and Bard for Dirge of Doom
>>
>>98387576
His argument is I can't take it because there's not a 'Good enough reason' I just wanted to take the dedication is all, I don't mind having mostly sorcerer.
>>
>>98386944
I was too late to post in the last thread, but I also agree with the fag that doesn't like SF2e because it had no science in it.
I don't need permission to turn a crossbow into a laser gun, so the only thing I cared about is if ship combat is cool. But I guess they went for a cinematic, make it up yourself bullshit, so I guess I'll play some other space RPG instead.
>>
>>98387772
Said fag here, I can admit that it probably was the better choice to wait and finalize the idea and not stuff it in the core rulebook. I know what made SF1e dead to me from the get-go was how they botched starship rules. It is fine to split the "real game" between two books, PF2e got away with it twice (CRB + Advanced Players' Guide, Player Core 1 and Player Core 2). And I do acknowledge that technically speaking, tactical ship combat isn't going to be a commonplace deal in a game like Starfinder, most encounters will be on-foot between characters.

Still, without any real crunch to the science part of science fantasy, I'm just playing Pathfinder with less combat, in a setting I don't really care much about compared to my own science fantasy ideas. SF2e should exist, and it isn't like people weren't asking for it. But having to wait over a year for a reason to actually play it has been somewhat exhausting, and I know I will be beyond disappointed if the Tech Core turns out to be a shit book.
>>
>>98387576
>>98387581
He's already a Sorcerer, I don't know if it's worth going Bard or Psychic for cantrips without also improving spellcasting.

Anyone got a chance to read Bastion of Blasphemies yet? Does it live up to the promise of a Castlevania-esque castle romp?

Eagle Knight Build Example

>Level 6FA: Eagle Knight Dedication
>Level 9: Multitalented*
>Level 10FA: Reactive Striker
>Level 14FA: Tactical Reflexes
>Level 16FA: Free for Multitalented choice
>Level 20FA: Free for Multitalented choice

Gives you 3 total reactions. One for Reactive Striker, One for Retributive Strike, and one free for anything. You also get Diplomacy Initiative Off-guarding.

Marshal Build Example

>Level 6FA: Marshal Dedication
>Level 9: Multitalented*
>Level 10FA: Cadence Call
>Level 14FA: Tactical Cadence
>Level 16FA: Inspiring Marshal's Stance
>Level 20FA: Free for Multitalented choice

Little late to come online but giving the whole party a strike and/or Stride is really powerful. Aura of Courage also works with the Marshal's Aura.

If your DM will allow it (Probably not if they're not allowing Exemplar) you could try Soulforger

>Level 6FA: Soulforger Dedication - Heroic Heart
>Level 9: Multitalented*
>Level 10FA: Rapid Manifestation
>Level 14FA: Soul Arsenal - Magical Resilience/Harmful Malice/Deep-Seeded Fear
>Level 16FA: Free for Multitalented choice
>Level 20FA: Free for Multitalented choice

Or Mind Smith

>Level 6FA: Mind Smith Dedication - Reach Weapon
>Level 9: Multitalented*
>Level 10FA: Runic Mind Smithing
>Level 14FA: Free for Multitalented Choice
>Level 16FA: Advanced Runic Mind Smithing
>Level 20FA: Free for Multitalented choice

Anyone got some other ideas?

NTA but part of SF2e I like is that it's extra content I can bend and twist down into my fantasy games with zero trouble because it's actually fully compatible with PF2e. An expanded list of ranged weapons that any class can pick up and use without wanting to kill themselves because they have to take an archetype to get reloading feats or some shit if they don't want to use a bow, thank god. That new absalom station book dropped 320 credit (32 gp) augment that's 1d6 agile/finesse claws with a 15 ft climb speed, you know damn well I'm backporting that shit as a Graft. Without combining PF2e with it and without tech core (and probably even with it), SF2e by itself feels like a pointless whatever mess of a game with 3 cool classes (Soldier, Mystic, Witchwarper) and 3 kind of shittily designed, superfluous ones.
Seriously, fuck whatever they did to Operative, I don't care that it's objectively strong, that thing feels like a parody of a one-note min-maxer.

Sorry, Anon, I can't help you without being spoonfed list of available feats by Pathfinder. Not to mention I've learnt not to plan out feat lines more than two levels ahead.
This list looks good, though?
>>98388642
Mind Smith is flavourful, but in the end it plays the same as just buying the normal weapon and runes. Despite being a MIND smith, you still need to do the hand-wield-grip dance as normal. You get the benefit of never being disarmed, but dunno if it's worth class feats.

How do you feel about pets? Could grab a familiar from sorc at 6, go familiar master at 10, then take incredible familiar.

Rogue.
Can take 2 rogue feats or mascot + conduit.

Could also take captain for a follower. You'll need to delay bloodline breadth so it doesn't fall too behind the curve, though.

Druid.

>>
>>98389025
Genuinely 2e would be better if it just handwaved away the absolute lowest levels after a few combats to get to the higher levels where things are interesting.

You think wizards would complain if they got 3rd level spells after like, four sessions? No, they complain because they're stuck with first level spells for what feels like forever.

what are some decent (Arcane and Divine) spells that don't need to be heightened/don't heighten very often? Stuff like Sure Strike, Interposing Earth, Fear etc.

NTA and unrelated to that Anon's original bitching but this is true of every game I swear. Never have I played a TTRPG with levels where the first couple were worth playing through as anything other than a beginner's tour of the system. I guess if you're talking OSR then you're in kind of a weird spot where the low levels are basically the entire system anyway, so that's an outlier, but you get what I mean. I really like APs that have the good sense to do that; Triumph of the Tusk, Seven Dooms for Sandpoint, and Wardens of Wildwood start at 3, 4, and 5 respectively. That should be the norm, with APs starting at 1 being present in the beginner box and maybe occasionally as a rarity.

Given the full range of options you could think of, what would you do the make an effective poison build in 1e? I've got visions of like a miasma-spreading plague doctor/gas masked up character, but poisons notoriously suck.
>>
>>98391347
Does 'the full range of options I can think of' include homebrew, in this instance?
>>
>>98391347
There are some hyper-specced poison builds in the game, including at least two that could fit the mold of what you're imagining. The main target you're going to be looking for is a build that allows for you to convert certain types of poisons into other types that are inflicted in a different fashion than normal, at which point you can basically convert any super powerful and deadly poison into an aerosol that you gas your opponents with.

Gathering a collection of creatures that you can then regularly milk for their poison will be your next goal, since monster poison is often way stronger and more potent than anything you can just buy or craft for yourself, even with Alchemist boons boosting your crafting abilities.
>>
>>98391362
I SUPPOSE not, preferably it would be either something Paizo or 3pp..

>>98391395
Any archetype suggestions for me to research? Sounds like you've got a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for
>>
>>98391406
Sure, so to start off, with one of the routes you can take you're actually going to want to look into this archetype of Alchemist: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/alchemist/archetypes/paizo-alchemist-archetypes/eldritch-poisoner-alchemist-archetype

From there, the first thing you immediately will want to take will be this discovery: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/alchemist/discoveries/paizo-alchemist-discoveries/poison-conversion

Do all of this as a Nagaji, and even though that race has a penalty to Int, if you use that race's Favored Class Bonus on the class, by that level 6 you'll have counteracted that penalty to all of your poisons. In addition, if you have someone with one of these classes in your party, you can ask them to add this to their spell list for you for a no-save buff to your poisons for the low low cost of a touch attack. (Once you get higher level, spending the money for a wand of this might be worth your while, SR notwithstanding): https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/p/pernicious-poison

There are other things that will help, but this will get you on the right track.

I'd sacrifice my first born for a campaign were we were only level 5 after months. I personally do not enjoy campaigns that are sprints to level 20

>>98391178
Kinetic Ram always keeps a spot in a level 1 slot as a get-out-of-grapple free card. As an added bonus, you can use it at range to break grapples against your teammates too. Command's another good rank 1 spell that essentially boils down to save-or-drop-prone. Depending on the initiative order, you can be a real dick with this against weapon-wielding enemies, so long as you've got an ally who goes before they do and is willing to Ready An Action to grab their weapon as they drop it. No incapacitate trait means bosses are susceptible to it, too.

Time Jump (rank 3) is another panic button, and one of the best there is. Rank 3 slow is another powerful pick; Slow's one of the best offensive spells in the game and the only downside of the rank 3 version is that it's single-target. That sucks, but it's a fair trade for a rank 3 spell.

Rank 4 has both heightened Invisibility (arcane) and Air Walk (divine), which basically live there forever in my experience, if I have access to them.

Anyone else got any necromancer builds brewing for when Impossible Magic releases? Was thinking of making a Human Spirit Puppeteer Necromancer with Hallowed Dead to give my spirits the holy attribute and maybe free archetype into either bard/champion (the bard bit is for more support, though depends if thralls can receive buffs) I know there's some of the new picks like Hedge Mage that are gonna be popular, but just curious what others think could possibly work with it. General character idea was son of a champion/paladin of Ragathiel or Ashava forced under the servitude of a lich for years and later vowing to eliminate them as well as any evil undead.
>>
>>98392057
Given it's got a feat for free animate dead, I can't help but wonder if the reanimator archetype will be any good with it. Especially because I'm not sure the reanimator archetype itself is any good.

Clockwork Reanimator and Undead Master both don't seem exceptionally good for Necromancer? Just because it doesn't look like it will have the action economy to command a companion and also do its necromancy.

>>
>>98393195
It just got a Remaster so we'll see.
>>
>>98393195
It just (technically not even released yet until next week) got a big refresh with the newest book, so people are still testing out the new feats and functionalities here. Beforehand, it was in a really rough spot thanks to a variety of action economy, defense, and character-building issues, but the new version of them seem to resolve basically all of them in one way or another. They still are far from the best, the class concept can never provide that and they still have a good amount of jank within the subclass options and overall playstyle in a game that doesn't quite appreciate that aspect of their design. But they are very solid picks now.
>>
>>98393126
I don't play 2e you dork. I'm a player in a Kingmaker game plus I'm currently running a 1e homebrew setting, and I have no desire to ever play 2e. But I won't disparage people for wanting to play 2e, maybe because I'm not a miserable loser who isn't welcome at any table. It's not for me but if people like it, good for them. Responding with only "your game sucks" when someone asks for build help is some miserable cunt behavior.
Change your ways and maybe you'll be welcome at a game again. No, one-offs online that fizzle out immediately because you are insufferable don't count.

>Raise A Tome now provides your tome Shield stats - [Hardness 3, HP 12, BT 6]. You can add reinforcing shield runes to your tome.
>Any feat that required you to be in Arcane Cascade such as Devastating Spellstrike now provides a bonus if you are in such instead.
>New Feat - Spell Retaliation: Feat 6, recharge your spellstrike as a free action if you succeed a magical saving throw or the enemy fails to hit you with a spell attack.
>Fused Staff no longer requires you to switch to staff form to use non-Spellstrike spell.
>Conflux Focus recharges all Focus Points, Conflux Wellspring did not get reprinted
>Hasted Assault's Quickened action now include Strides as well as Strikes

>>
>>98395532
We're well, well past the point of this being course-correctable but seeing Running Recharge just reminds me of how the 3-action system (for martials) ended up being heavily centralized around giving you shit action economy and then (usually) selling it back to you in the form of feats. It's not mechanically weak, it just feels so... limited and default. Yeah I would like my gimmick to require the use of 2-3 actions per turn and then get feats that make it so I can get a free basic action when doing it, thanks. Yeah I would like to scum a mount off Free Archetype to make this even less of an issue.

It goes back to ranger in the CRB, but at least then it was the only martial that really had this problem. Off the top of my head we now have gunslinger, magus, guardian, and runesmith with this design to varying degrees (and basically every caster to a lesser extent, which is almost a separate problem). One of the problems with OG investigator was this but it didn't get compression (and its gimmick was horrendously underpowered for the cost to boot). Commander doesn't have mitigation per se but the basic DPRfagging combo strongly incentivizes ranged or mounted builds because you want your own 0-MAP attack and a 2-action "let an ally attack" tactic.
>>
>>98395950
the 3 action system feels like it would be really fun to play but yeah, in practice, it's just "get feats so you can compress the shit you need to do in a turn so you don't run out of actions", unless you're a spellcaster which in that case fuck you lmaoooo
>>
>>98395950
>>98396735
The trick behind the 3-Action System, especially in regards to classes that have fairly strict rotations or "Assumed First Round Actions", is that it isn't trying to expand your moveset or action economy compared to other systems. Using Ranger for example, the action cost between Hunt Prey, Hunter's Mark, and Quarry (PF2e, PF1e, and D&D5e) is fairly similar, one action to gain a bonus against a target. What that action *is* what matters. One action in PF2e is...one action, you can trade out anything you were going to do for the sake of it. Hunter's Mark and Quarry have a dedicated action category it takes, Bonus Action (+ a Spell Slot) for Hunter's Mark, a Standard Action for Quarry. And that's hardcoded, you can't trade out a different deal to lower the opportunity costs, which starts stacking up as you venture. Hence why I'm not against putting Quarry up here despite it being an 11th-level feature and "not exactly a Ranger's standard routine". By the time you get, you likely have a FUCKTON better things to spend a Standard Action on...like attacking. The inability to transfer it up or down the action cost ladder by default devalues a lot of power in various abilties.

It's not really making you flexible in terms of things you can do one turn. There aren't a lot of activities you can do to squeeze out more than 4-5 potential actions out of 3 in 2e. many things are about saving on cost than giving you more oomph in an encounter. What it is doing is adding additional parity to various 1/2/3 action activities, lowering opportunity costs on a wide skill set. Since 2e is a lot about horizontal character progression, it is important that options are valuable enough to consider being used at any given time.

Spellcasting is a bit of a different deal. Most things are cost-heavy compared to other systems thanks to them trying streamline a caster's turn. Spells are heavy on the mental stack already, they want you to just finish your turn already.
>>
>>98396853
its that casters tend to end up lacking in actions for a lot of stuff they also need or want to do since spells can take so many actions on their own for very little reward.
>>
>>98396876
Early on I would agree, most spells do not have the cost-to-effect ratio evened out, even AOE ones. But many spells tend to start ramping up in, if not power, then overall effectiveness that puts them on equal regards to the typical martial. Being able to hit multiple targets is something many martials would normally spend 2-to-3 actions on anyway, so you aren't really saving any more between them. It just that movement and positioning is so important to casters, them not having a lot of ways to get off people combined with the inability for most martials to hold the front line without Reactive Strike does heavily shift the (perceived) balance and effectiveness of movement, when realistically you don't need THAAAAT much movement in the turn.

It's more when you trying to set-up or use metamagics where things get finnicky...
>>
>>98396735
The 3 action system is still vastly superior to typed actions IMO; I've gone back to other editions (made friends who don't GM PF2e) and it's night and day. I think PF2e is still a net gain for spellcasters in terms of turn design, but it has more to do with 1-action spells and skill actions than the 3-action system per se.

>>98396853
>What it is doing is adding additional parity to various 1/2/3 action activities, lowering opportunity costs on a wide skill set. Since 2e is a lot about horizontal character progression, it is important that options are valuable enough to consider being used at any given time.
I don't know which part of my post (if any) you're responding to, but the design I'm speaking of accomplishes the opposite of this. It assumes first and foremost that you have a gimmick you spend large amounts of your action econ on, then sells limited options back to you when you do so. In function this is actually comparable to the non-fungible gimmicks you describe simply because they're now a non-negotiable cost within the character's action pool.
For these classes, the activities being boosted by feats do not exist in a vacuum; they are unavoidable class mechanics that can and should be compared to design in the fighter, monk, barbarian, etc. whose gimmicks' action costs are negligible/nonexistent, which results in *better* horizontal progression because feats can simply do interesting things on top of your basic gimmick.
Take magus. Its damage is tied up in Spellstrike, which is action-hungry spike damage. Taking a mount or Running Recharge does not actually widen your options for activities on your turn, but it does let you get that high-value spike damage off more consistently. If you look at magus' feat list, the vast majority of its feats are passive effects or modified Spellstrikes because it is simply not designed around having a variety of non-Spellstrike activities.
>>
>>98396853
>>98397173
Actually, a better comparison might be between gunslinger and bow fighter. The gunslinger does have higher damage per Strike, but it pays for it with Reloads.
Any features the gunslinger has to mitigate Reload are only adding (partial) versatility back that was removed, which is my whole issue. The bow fighter can get 2 attacks off easy, then spend a third action on whatever it wants. For much of the game, the gunslinger has to fiddle around with Strides and whatever skill actions its way gives it, or sacrifice making a 2nd attack as consistently, which eats into its per-Strike advantage over the bow. The gunslinger does get several 2-action feats it can use interchangeably, but so does the fighter (and the operative), which can use them (and the rest of its action economy for the turn) more flexibly.

>>
>>98397206
Yeah I knew someone was going to bring up Bow Fighter vs. Gunslinger.
So I do admit this is an outlier that pretty much define the issues people have with the 3AS; that you are paying back an action to do your class fantasy and it doesn't feel great in comparison to someone that can be built to spam. Gunslinger is a very blatant example thanks to how Reload is a tax on the fantasy and how overall underpowered guns are.

Still, I don't think a lot of other builds or ideas are so constricted. I think of Thaumaturge where Exploit Vulnerability is a pretty intensive routine, but the value it provides makes it worth it despite it being a fairly blatant action tax. And with Spellcasters in mind, I think all spells considering there is more than enough options for you to play around with the action economy once you start getting 3rd rank slots.
>>
>>98397685
That's awesome anon! Hope you get to bring it all home soon!

>>98395766
One thing I was kinda sad abouut is that fuse staff no longer lets you swap between staff and weapon. So you cant do a "you wouldnt deprive an old man of his walking stick?" only to then go "Ha ha fools, behold!" and turn it into a greatsword or something. But thats pretty minor when compared to the buff it got.

>>
Ignoring the schizo bait, I do regret using the MMO terms and reigniting the burnt corpse of the "PF2E IS JUST D&D4E" nonsense. But there was just a period between the APG to what I want to say War of Immortals where they just got really big into Marking and Self-Buff classes that they were so adamant about making them expend their turn effectively doing nothing but turning on their class mechanics. A lot of 2e classes are pretty guilty of waiting to play the game, and then playing the game as boring as possible. The "fairly" is pulling a lot of weight there, but it is just true they made classes built around rotations.
One of the real shames of the post-Player Core remastering of books was that they didn't really fix this issue for Gunslinger, Inventor, Thaumaturge, and Psychic, not in the same way the other classes got some degree of levity in that. Not everything needs the self-selecting correction fix Quick-Tempered was for Barbarian ("if every Barbarian is going to Rage, and Rage already have its own self-selecting biases and debuffs built in, then there's no point in it being an action tax"), but I do think these classes could have some more flexibility with the wider power budget available.

I think the Slayer playtest has my favorite take on things with the Relentless trait. Trading a reaction for an action for your class powers and fantasies is a really fun idea, especially with spellcasting being added with such. It's definitely not an idea that every class can get away with, but it definitely was the best thing about that playtest. Hope they keep such with the full class.

I do want to wait for a Day 1 errata before completely writing it off, but I hate how they made it terrible.
>Has no interaction with Arcane Cascade, despite giving it a Reload + Cascade action
>Arcane Cascade doesn't add damage to ranged strikes, this does nothing to fix it (technically an issue with Starlit Span too but nothing stopping you from using it over Volatile Spark)
>Nothing is stopping you from using Starlit over Volatile Spark
>Booming Blast is terrible, being a mental fear effect that requires you to be within fairly close range toother people.
>Exploding Bullet only have the options of fire or sonic over all the other energy types. Fire is resisted the most and sonic have very few enemies weak to it.
>Killshot's Report is actually pretty good but the restriction on double-dipping on a foe already hit by a spellstrike can be more problematic than not given the short range of the echo.
>You don't have a way to reload + recharge spellstrike.

Basically they did nothing right with this subclass, it is *painfully* bad. Nothing comes together at all.

Actually, with the new feats and options, mainly Spellbinding Speech and Spell Shifter, they are actually pretty okay now. Still pretty outclassed by Witch and Animist and Witchwarper (they REALLY need some real poaching options outside of Runelord Schools), but genuinely okay to put in B-tier, above Inventor.
>>
>>98404787
imagine if 3.5 wizards had 1/2 BAB, 1d4 HP, still had the worst save progression with only one good save, and weren't allowed to stack spells like mage armor and shield and were limited to always having terrible AC, and also their overpowered 9th level 3.5 spellcasting was replaced with Bard spellcasting capping out at 6th level spells with no compensation buffs.

That's basically the situation Wizard went through in PF2E. Honestly even that is kind of underselling it, since Starfinder 1e also made it so every single caster capped out at 6th level spells max and made everyone more reliant on equipment and consumables and technological implants/modifications whole nerfing magic, and even then a Starfinder 1e Technomancer which is that game's wizard equivalent is still way more fun to play and is genuinely top tier in contributing to the party compared to a 2E wizard.

INT is probably the best ability score for usefulness and powerful skills in Starfinder while it's absolutely and unequivocally the worst and weakest ability score in 2E as well, forgot to mention that in the nerfs targeted to Wizard. Instead of more skill points per level allowing you to have more skills at maximum potential, now they just get a single new skill permanently stuck at the lowest level of proficiency forever with no way to upgrade for having high intelligence, when there's already ways to just roll every skill adding your level to it anyways even untrained. The supposed niche of INT, knowledge checks, is actually done way better by other classes who get to use their own key ability score instead of INT anyways.
>>
>>98405727
I'm going to say this is both pretty hyperbolic (you can stack Mage Armor and Shield here) and doesn't hit the specific pain points that made Wizard such a non-starter post-Remaster. A lot can be said that applies to casters in general, or at least INT-specific builds when facing Thaumaturge or even Ranger. Many of the underlying issues of Wizards in 2e have little to do with their base statistics, or at least were completely obfuscated by just how potent their 4th spell slot per rank was. The spell school restriction just wasn't...a restriction, especially with Universalist Wizard and Spell Blending. Their longevity and the headstart the Arcane list, combined with how paltry the other full caster options were with 2e's caster meta in play, meant that they were just fine for the longest.

The Remaster HEAVILY restricting their 4th slot by theme and GM Fiat, and providing very little utility compared to what they gave all the other casters like Witch and Oracle was what exposed how...nothing Wizard is to the team. This is where their low base stats and empty feature list really bites them in the ass. Fuck, they STILL don't have an in-class way of getting 3 focus points.
But now with actual feats, good focus spells, and ways to force multiply a team comp, they are respectable if still-niche-for-their-historical-pedigree option selects. There are still better casters and more can be done with them, but they aren't so much a dead fish in the grand scheme of things. No one is going to complain about a dude that has an at-will "turns off Reactive Strike" button.
>>
>>98405819
>'m going to say this is both pretty hyperbolic (you can stack Mage Armor and Shield here)
You're missing the point entirely. In 1e, nothing prevents a character from having high AC regardless of class. In 2E you are specifically railroaded to have permanently better or worse defenses based purely on class choice with absolutely no way to overcome this ironclad limitation.

Reducing all bonuses to non-stacking circumstance and status bonuses was purposefully done to kneecap the sort of layered spell defenses that 1/2 BAB classes relied upon in 3.X.
>>
>>98405833
The pedantry was more to point out that, again, the complaints apply more to casters in general than what made 2eWizards so rough for so long. 2e not letting casters patch up their flaws so easily does suck somewhat, understandable as it is, but it isn't really what makes any caster more or less easy to play (albeit does make Wizard still only having Unarmored Defense over everything else baffling desu).

It is just simply the fact Wizards got actively nerfed and neglected in the same 'patch cycle' that saw EVERY OTHER CASTER barring Psychic got pumped up. Sorcerers got more out of the Remaster AND THEY WERE ALREADY THE BEST CASTER IN 2E FOR THE LONGEST. That what made Wizard suck so hard.
>>
>>98405858
>it isn't really what makes any caster more or less easy to play
hard disagree
the most common pain point and what turns people away from 2E as a system is sitting down to start a new campaign and running either Book 1 of an Adventure Path or a homebrew campaign and the absolute dogshit experience that is levels 1-4. When people play 5E they speed run the first several levels and it's common to literally level up from 1 to 2 in a single session and hit 3 after a couple more assuming you didn't outright start the campaign with everyone at 3 so they all have subclasses.
In Pathfinder 2E it's completely possible to spend MONTHS of IRL time completing the first Book 1 of an Adventure Path. The experience at level 1-4 being so abysmally dogshit for wizards is a huge part of why they're regularly considered the worst casters to play. Whiteroom bullshit about having infinite gold to copy spells into their spell book and the ability to Spell Blend all their slots the most optimal way at 15+ is completely irrelevant to over 90% of the playerbase.

Secondly, playing a wizard to even mediocre potential in 2e requires going absolutely contrary to class fantasy and is itself yet another noob trap that makes levels 1-4 the most miserable.

Every Wizard MUST start with 16 Dexterity. Every Wizard on the planet, even the hunched old men with floppy robes and beards down to their knees are actually the most agile and dextrous people on the planet short of actual rogues and monks. Every Wizard on the planet in 2E ALSO has to boost Dexterity at every possible opportunity. This is not actually fucking written out anywhere in the book, there's no giant red text or disclaimer saying "YOU MUST PLAY A RACE THAT CAN BOOST INT PLUS DEX, ABSOLUTELY NEVER PLAY ANYTHING WITH A DEXTERITY PENALTY, IF YOU DO NOT START WITH 16 AND BOOST TO 18 IMMEDIATELY OR DIE" but there probably should be. Because of how crits work in 2E it's not simply a matter of getting hit a little more often
>>
>>98405917
>>98405858
If a wizard foolishly thinks he can actually fucking roleplay, even showing up with ABOVE AVERAGE for a human at 12 or 14 his first dozen sessions are going to be fucking miserable and they're going to want to quit the game. It's not "the orcs and goblins hit you 10% more of the time than they would otherwise" like 1e, which can easily be made up for just by staying back and using more defensive spells, in 2e every core spell you'll be using every single combat has a ~30 foot range, you cannot ever make up the difference for having dogshit dexterity, and you aren't just being hit a little more often, you're taking ~50% more damage on a class that already has the worst health in the game with zero compensation.

I don't know if you've ever actually played with someone new to the system who decides to make an Unarmored Defense caster and decides to roleplay and not start with the second highest dex in the party and instantly boost it at every possible opportunity, but it's pretty fucking miserable to watch. Even experienced players, even people who've played other games besides 5e, can easily be misled by Paizo into thinking 2E is a roleplaying game and that their dex-impaired Gandalf wannabe is surely something expected within the system.

Even the wannabe elven bladesingers with maxed dexterity at every opportunity and as much possible investment in AC as possible are still worse than the system math expects until they eventually hit 20 DEX and manage to cap their dex+armor bonus at +5, which is still worse than actual defensive characters in heavy armor at +6. The entire reason Monks start out with Expert in AC at level 1 is to avoid this situation, and even starting with an 18 in DEX and Expert they're not actually better off, merely breaking even. At level 15+ a wizard who's done the mandatory DEX/WIS/CON/INT boosts as every opportunity doesn't mind anymore, but at levels 1-4 the worse AC and worse HP are absolutely miserable
>>
>>98405967
>mandatory DEX/WIS/CON/INT boosts as every opportunity
This is another dumb example of legit ivory tower design in second edition.
>Wow, this game is awesome, you mean I get four free attribute boosts to do whatever I want with and so every class doesn't even up looking the same like 5e where they only get a single boost every four levels?
>Haha just kidding, we kept FORT/REF/WILL exclusively being tied to CON/DEX/WIS and didn't go with 4E style Defenses; every single class needs to use 3/4 of their "free" boosts on the Save stats in order to keep up with expected system math, and you also need to boost your key ability score.
Oh, gee, thanks daddy Paizo...
>>

>>98404787

>>
>>98408275
First narrow down your options based on the level you want, that just by itself will bring it from 2 billion down to maybe 5 million options. Then from there, decide if you want a monster "theme" or if you want purely random monsters like they've all just been plopped there by some mad Wizard with too much time on his hands.

Once you've made that choice, if you're working with a theme that brings the choices down significantly, if not then just roll a random creature of X power level and just stick with the choice.

To introduce peeps to the concept of PF Combat I have a small chamber room with like 4-6 goblins and I tell them to make 3 Level 1 PCs. Generally good for running a total newbie through the system.
>>
>>98405917
>>98405967
As someone who is slowly realizing he might be the only person in the party doing the expected stat allocations the system expects, it's kind of crazy to watch. Every other combat I look over and realize everyone else is like, 2-3 AC behind where they should be, with no way to actually rectify it without either extensive homebrew or a complete rebuild of their character. Mage Armor-I'm sorry, "Mystic Armor", just being functionally armor runes on top of unarmored, instead of... Actually being "armor for mages", twists my dick so hard man.

And all that without even talking about saves. I'm fucking baffled out of all the optional rules that got printed, there wasn't a single alternative save calculation rule, if a 4e style save rule got printed I bet it'd be the most popular optional rule just short of Free Archetype.

>>
>>98409271
No weak templates, but given we're still scraping through fights at all, I'm sure the GM is still pulling punches elsewhere to account for there being a 4-6 AC difference between my champion and the rest of the party. I'll probably just keep trying to push us towards some kind of homebrew or 3pp to patch shit-there's a pinecone natural armor graft somewhere that would probably fix the problem, the party just has to have money to afford it and a willingness to put it on their characters.

It is weird as there are plenty of non-Iconic characters in every book that just look better, even with the diversity hangup. I think they were going for making it really obvious the automaton guy was an automaton and not just a dude in a lot of weird armour while still keeping humanoid expressions, but honestly I think they would have been much better off leaning into the blatantly inhuman mono-eye look of Jistkan automatons. IIRC the lore is the dude was studying how to recreate them anyway, it makes sense he'd rip off their aesthetic too and would make for a far more unique looking iconic.

Any stories of when you tried odd combos of character traits, for good or for ill? My example:

>Make centaur cleric
>Idea is that innate high speed and decent toughness makes for okay support (large body is a problem for getting caught in AOEs but not too much)
>Get Accommodating Mount feat (another PC can use you as a mount and have all three actions, you get two) mostly because of narrative reasons
>Get into constant Catch 22s where if someone is mounted, can't actually move and cast spells, and they don't gain enough benefit from a mount that isn't moving
>End up mostly using it in RP scenes or to help in ferrying NPCs around

Kind of dunno where I was going with the idea. Feels like it fit the character, but mechanically wasn't much use

Centaur as a whole is pretty fun, if only because of all the horse puns that it generates

Some of this website's posters have gotten really weirdly obsessed with rape lately, what's up with that?
>>
>>98414908
I've always wanted to try Accommodating Mount as a monk. Monks are the fastest class in the game, centaurs have the fastest base movespeed in the game, and both you and the PC riding you get to benefit from how fast you are. On top of that, monks get Flurry of Blows, which means you can Stride and still Strike twice every round, even though you're perma-slowed. I'm imagining a temple sword + Fighter/Duelist archetypes. Fighter gets you Reactive Strike and Guardian's Deflection (which you can use if somebody tries to hit your buddy, since he'll almost certainly be the target due to your legendary AC scaling). Duelist gets you Dueling Dance at 14, which is a +2 AC stance you can enter with Reflexive Stance (level 12) or even add to a monk stance if you took one (Fuse Stance, level 16).

Ideally you'd want your rider to have some kind of high-value melee combo that uses all three actions. Or, alternately, an Agile Grace fighter or Flurry ranger, who no longer has to Stride and can now spend all round, every round, attacking. Flurry rangers eventually get up to six Strikes with Impossible Flurry, which is a three-round action. You could essentially turn a high-level ranger into a centaur-guided missile, picking an enemy to Stride to each round before unloading a total of 8 Strikes on it. Bonus points if your rider multiclasses rogue to grab Gang Up so you two are always providing flanking to each other.

1e is actually very well balanced if you don't completely all the rules about spell slots, preparation and daily recovery rates.
The problem has only ever been cheaters and illiterates.
And that's the end of that discussion.
>>
>>98415268
Dude, by the time casters begin to be a problem, they already have more than enough spell slots on top of all their magic items. People "ignoring" them is not swinging the balance argument to a notable degree.

1e is not well-balanced as it was not the point. It being well-balanced isn't what people even wanted out of it.

Me and another player in Strength of Thousands have a kind of wombo-combo setup. Player A is a full spellcaster with Inner Radiance Torrent prepared. That's the spell where you can charge it up for two rounds, then let it rip for big damage. Player B is a multiclass caster with Friendfetch.

Basically, if Player A is about to pop and Player B sees an opportunity to catch an extra person in the Inner Radiance Torrent's line, Player B can just Stride and then Friendfetch to pick up Player A and put them where they need to be. It's a fun option to have, we've used it a couple of times.
>>
>>98415291
Not true. If you need five Slow spells today but you only have three level 3 slots, it doesn't matter how many other slots you theoretically have. And that argument holds at all character levels, because the power of effects you are expected to bring grows - while encounters continue to require the lower level effects (like Slow) on top of that. So the drain on your spell slots is not fungible, and neither are your spell slots.
That's the fundamental mistake you continue to make: you keep treating slots as fungible. They just fundamentally and profoundly are not.

Furthermore, magic items are not unique to casters. Everyone has the Use Magic Device skill. If you aren't investing in it, that's your fault. It's not the system's fault.
Seems like you just do not actually understand what you're talking about, you're just regurgitating bullshit that you've heard in the past.

Why are those in the fucking travel guide and not in player or GM core?
>>
>>98415935
Ball bearings are for making creatures fall prone, not for a shitty push, that’s no a replacement. There aren’t any bear traps either, even though there are so many fucking useless items, a lot of basic shit is missing, especially containers, there aren’t any barrels, for example.

How many games you expect the party to be traders? And not just handwave the small details like trade goods, materials, routes, and such?
Both rulebooks are already cramped for space and that kind of autistically specific guidance idea is best for the Lost Omens book.

Pretty sure this one is just called that because it is not used mainly for bears.

I guess if you wanna be pedantic, a chest isn't a barrel but I can't imagine the point of splitting the difference here.

Also, if the book is cramped, why are you putting an entire article on wheelchairs in there which could fit three dozen items?
>>
>>98416138
>>98416160
Again, cramped books. More classes, rules, and ideas like the setting to share made the Core Rulebook, Gamemastery Guide, Player Core 1 & 2, and GM Core all very beefy books compared to 5e. Mind you, trade good didn't CAME with rules, it was just a chart that listed prices. Any specific interactions were essentially house rules that just made sense for a lot of people, hence why these LO books are filled with such ideas. Hell, they hired the 5e Combat Wheelchair person to do the wheelchair rules for GB, that says what that book really meant right there.
> why are you putting an entire article on wheelchairs in there which could fit three dozen items?
You know why. That's why there's no actual injury and disability rules...

It's actually funnier that there are two separate Anons so frothing angry that they've actually typed out how frothing angry they are over this. Still, in the interest of actual discussion, what's the context here? Because if you're talking about the kind of low-level dungeon-delving stuff like throwing flour to outline invisible enemies that's in the game (genericized as "powder": https://2e.aonprd.com/Equipment.aspx?ID=1399). Player-placed traps got a subsystem called Snares. If you want a chicken to hurl into rooms to trigger traps as an alternative to a 10' pole that' kind of square-by-square dungeon crawling has been abstracted into the Search and Disable Device exploration activities. Neither version of PF is really a dungeon crawler, and they don't have the same mechanics that dungeon crawlers do. Same thing with containers: generally speaking, containers are abstracted, and if you buy something then it comes contained in whatever would typically contain it. This is why there's no generic "sheath" item, for instance; things that you sheath just come with sheaths.

If you want to do stuff like the kind of old-school, probing ahead of you with a pole, hiring townsfolk to trigger traps, rulings-not-rules style dungeon crawling my best advice would just be to play another game. Both editions of Pathfinder are, at their heart, about grid-based top-down tactical combat. That's what they are. They have some degree of support for stuff outside of that, but the overwhelming amount of mechanical interactions, character build choices, module emphasis--everything about the system, pretty much--revolves around that kind of encounter. Everything else is mostly just a way for players to interact with the world so they can get from one fight to the next, or a way to add a little spice and variety before the main dish, which has always been combat.

I'm literally just trying to let my players prepare for a fucking adventure and I am having to homebrew a solid 75% of the gear that should be IN THE FUCKING CORE BOOK

And yes, I would be in a different game, but I FOOLISHLY decided I'd put up with another D&Doid if it meant I didn't have to produce the entire module this time, so I'd play one that works with foundry all nicely, and holy SHIT this stuff is bad.

And that's not even including bulk rules on large animals, which ALL HORSES ARE. Which means each of them can carry dozens and dozens and dozens of bulk 1 items because those are light for larges and jesus christ

>I'm literally just trying to let my players prepare for a fucking adventure and I am having to homebrew a solid 75% of the gear that should be IN THE FUCKING CORE BOOK

Anon if you are having to homebrew that much of the game then you are playing the wrong fucking game for the kind of adventure you want to run. You seem to be aware of this, and it sounds like you're just venting at this point. So, carry on I guess.
>>
>>98416175
There's nobody else to yell at.
I might have to personally go to paizo's offices and tell them they're retarded.
>>
>>98416170
Wait, if you have Foundry, then just look it up in the compendium. You don't need any books yourself, every book is already in the game. You don't have to work with just the core rulebook. That's why they can do so many gay ass splats, the rules are all available all at once.

You shouldn't have to homebrew anything!
>And that's not even including bulk rules on large animals, which ALL HORSES ARE. Which means each of them can carry dozens and dozens and dozens of bulk 1 items because those are light for larges and jesus christ
yeah, they are pack animals. That is their job.
By the time your players have enough junk to encumber a horse, they likely already have Spacious Pouches anyway. Really, they have such high capacity for anons like you that want to say a player is somehow too heavy to ride one...
>>
>>98416184
There's no point to spacious pouches, just get more horses!
And I can't tell you how frustrating it is to sift through books written by 30 seperate people with different ideas on balance to find a fuckin' chicken, even with the help of a vtt.

I will at least give you that the naming schemes and organization are a mess. That is a Paizo Standard Problem. I don't know why Bird and Duck are two separate things, but not a chicken.

He's referring to the fact that the centaur is permanently on a 2-action economy, since they have to spend one of their actions each turn steadying the rider. As a result, his centaur cleric can't cast a two-action spell and Stride in the same round, since that'd be a total of three actions. He sort of built himself into a situation where each round he has to choose between being a spellcaster and being a mount.

I, however, submit the funniest solution to that problem: Maneuvering Spell, from the Sixth Pillar archetype. It adds a free Leap to each two-action spell, so Anon could literally prance around the battlefield with his rider.
>>
>>98416202
>God, one horse might be equivalent to a fucking 1,200 GP spacious pouch looking this up, holy shit.
The thing that balances that out is that it is a normal horse.
You still have to feed it, cheap horses get spooked by combat, they are large creatures that can barely fit through dungeons, and stuff on them is not on (You).
>"intentionally scattering required rules across as many books as possible out of pure greed"
All rules are free so they don't benefit much doing that. But ignoring that, this isn't Dungeon Crawl Classic. It's not trying to be super nitty-gritty and realistic. 2e already is a downgrade from 1e's simulationism, which followed along the footsteps of 3.X's more gamey ideas. Options are provided because they know people like it and want real foundations to make different styles of games, but ultimately it is a high-power fantasy that tries to condense and simplify a lot of old school mentalities.
>>
>>98416230
It feels like they have entirely abandoned even the premise of simulationism.

Why does Paizo do ANYTHING anymore?
Deep down, it's all virtue signaling. Her backstory was heavily connected to slavery, and while she wasn't a slave herself, being born as a noble in a land where dark-skinned slaves are commonplace is probably triggering or some shit. Plus as the other anon said, blindness *claps* is *claps* not *claps* bad.

Toss that problematic character to the curb and get some furries up in this bitch. Though trannies and those suffering from reddit brainrot are a significant portion of their customer base, you gotta tap into that furry market to get more mentally ill freaks to buy your shit.

>>98416255

>Paizos fanbase was literally people angry about shitty new editions
I think this is valid to bring up, but fundamentally an unsustainable model. Between the OGL scandal, the inability to move new 3.X-esque products like Starfinder (honestly more due to theme than rules but the rules can't be ignored), and that kind of grognard more likely to buy systems that go backwards in design instead of forwards or even staying with 3.X, it isn't that surprising that Paizo shaved off that part of the audience. It is kind of bullshit, but I wouldn't know how you would keep such an aging and hostile audience satisfied?

Even Legendary Games is struggling to square this circle, probably why the Corefinder project is taking forever.

You can't seriously have played 4e and have this opinion. Hating 2e isn't an excuse to lie.
>>
>>98416255
>It feels like they have entirely abandoned even the premise of simulationism.
Correct! PF2e is not a simulationist game, never was, and the fact that it isn't was (secretly) one of its selling points as it sacrificed everything on the sacred altar of Balance Above All Else. Creative solutions to problems are forbidden, you must do everything by the book of what Paizo intended you to use to solve problems, and anything outside of this Fire Emblem-esque framework is clearly either attempted cheating of action economy or something the devs will have to patch out with future erratas.
>>

Does anyone know of any features, traits, or feats in 1e that let you take FCBs in a different class?
For example, being a Human Paladin 2/Sorcerer 18 and being able to take the Human Paladin's +1 to an energy resistance FCB for all 20 levels.
>>
>>98420481
Checking the SRD, the only thing that does something similar is a 3PP Mythic feat that grants you all the favored class bonuses you'd qualify for retroactively.

1st party stuff is a no go.
>>
>>98420481
The closest you'll get is stuff like Half-Elf that lets you take 2 classes worth of FCBs, I imagine most of the resources never considered needing such a thing due to how hyper-specific most racial-locked FCBs are to the class they're designed for, like how half-elf adds +1 to the number of feet your paladin auras extend which only affects the paladin class, and wouldn't make sense for any other class to buff.
>>
>>98420526
>>98420542
Yeah it figures. My hope was to go Crossblooded Sorcerer 1/Bloodline Arcanist 19 and take the kitsune sorc FCB for +5 DC to enchantment; even if you needed to take Racial Heritage and a second feat on half-elf it would be massively worth it. Oh well.
