>What is Lancer?
Lancer is a TTRPG about narratives, customizable mechs, and the pilots who crew them.

Set thousands of years in the future, Lancer imagines a future where humanity has spread to the stars after weathering terrible ecological collapse on Earth.
With a survival imperative, humanity’s organizing body, Union, seeks to manage the galaxy to ensure we’ll never again be faced with extinction.

Lancer features a mix of gritty, mud-and-lasers military science fiction and mythic science fantasy. In the setting, conscript pilots mix ranks with flying aces, mercenary guns-for-hire brawl with secretive corporate agents, and relativistic paladins cross thermal lances with causality-breaking, unknowable beings.
Players of Lancer adopt the roles of mech pilots. Some groups will fight for Union, working to rectify the crimes of previous administrations. Others, for a corpro-state, working to advance private interests while lining their pockets.

Lancer offers deep mech customization, a wide range of player backgrounds, and a system and setting with room for any story you and your group want to tell.

Is it me or is the Minotaur kinda bad? Everything it can do the Goblin can do better
>>
>>98427595
One is a small frail long-range glass-canon hacker and the other is a big beefy tank built for area-control. Their roles don't even remotely overlap aside from both being Tech builds... and to be honest Tech builds fucking suck shit anyway.
>>
>>98427595
It's less all-in on tech. Better gun slot, better bulk, more worried about battlefield positioning and cordoning off enemies with its engagement range than just tech attacking constantly.
>>
>>98427595
They're both pretty bad. Tech in thus game is severely underdeveloped. You have all this cool shit you can put on guns, extra damage, extra accuracy, mods to ignore cover or resistances, talents to add extra effects to your attacks... Tech builds have none of that. Unless you know you won't be playing past level 3, don't bother with a tech-based Frame.
>>
>>98427619
>>98427641
Don't forget tech builds have to invest HASE points into Systems too while everyone else can treat it as a dump stat and invest in the much more useful stats. Extra points available for Hull directly translates into extra HP.
>>
>>98427648
Just don't get hit and you won't need to put points in hull anon :^)
>>
>>98427595
The Goblin is bad too, the Chom variant of the Everest does everything the Goblin does, but without the crippling frailty.

>>98427641
Also seconding this. If you're going to be playing to a high level, tech just struggles too hard to keep up. Hor-0S 1 feels great in the early game, but that's basically your pinnacle as a tech character. You never get better at that. You'll be doing the same thing at level 10+ that you were doing at level 1 and 2.

>>
>>98428033

>>
>>98427641
>>98427648
Is it viable to put tech options into a hybrid build so that your mech can do two things pretty well instead of one thing super well?
>>
>>98428098
No, because it requires investing into Systems if you actually want to hit, and every single one of your other HASE stats will do more for you than Systems.
>>
>>98428098
Not really. Especially at low levels every stat point is precious and so splitting your focus means it's more that you're never operating at full capacity rather than never being useless. At higher LLs you're often better off just having two entirely different mech configurations and taking whichever is more useful for the expected sitrep rather than splitting the difference.
>>
>>98428033
Fun for the person playing, but ultimately an overly-complicated stall tactic that will make the game miserable for the DM and everyone else in your party. My group unironically banned it because of how often it lead to retarded rules-argument and having to pause the game to look shit up.
>>
>>98428043
Good.
God's perfect weapon is the heavy machine gun.
>>
>>98428098

Tech in general feels like a mechanic that exists more for enemies to use than the players. It's absolutely terrifying when enemies use it... but as a player who's tried SO hard to make tech builds work... they always feel underwhelming. You're doing an entirely different damage type (heat) than your allies, the secondary effects of your hacks are way weaker than enemy hacks, and most of them enemies can clear as a quick-action which feels so bad when high-ranking enemies have multiple actions per round.

The game-designer in me says that Tech attacks were added as a way for enemies to deal with high-armor players, and then kinda just "tacked on" in a severely nerfed form for players. Unless you're playing a really low-stakes game where you don't really care about being "good", don't bother with Tech.
If you DO bother with Tech for some god-awful reason, be prepared for Puppet Systems and Eject Power Cores to be the only thing from level 1 to 12 because other tech attacks are so situational and unreliable that you'll never use them.
>>
>>98428184
Balance control lockout is pretty good also. Too bad it's locked to the chomolungma frame
>>
if im doing artillery, what should be my go-to when enrmies get too close?
>>
>>98429047
Try the 12-gauge dilator, it's extra effective against fascists and c*pitalists.
>>
>>98429047
Dipping one level into Tortuga and one Talent rank into Vanguard gives you one of the best close-range weapons in the game and negates it's main weakness (inaccurate). 2d6 damage on a main-mount skirmish weapon with Threat 3 is not bad. The Nelson's Handcannons also do similar damage if you've got a Aux/Aux or Flex Mount for them and are doing a reload-loop build.

If you're looking for something with no License investment, the Charge Blade works in Engagement Range, can be given Accurate with one level of Duelist, and has Armor Piercing on it. It's damage is a bit lacking, but it's consistent and good enough to punish weaker enemies who get in your face.
>>
>>98429047
Pistols and shotguns are pretty good, since you get overwatch out of them also depends on the frame

Just run a homebrew sitrep today

>holdout and a reverse breach&clear kind of recreating a delaying action
>Party is in entrenched lines, have to endure an all out assault for 3 turns while some npc's doing screening retreat
>retreat to specified positions when there is some breathing room, defend for 2 turns and then repeat
>set up ambush on the third area and murder whoever is still coming
the legionaire npc class is quite useful when used in tandem with commander and priest npc's im glad the players were not brainlet and focus fired the command mechs.

Any cool homebrew sitreps you guys know?

Again. Why are you here?
>>
>>98429244
Our DM recently threw us into a scenario where we had to recover vital technology from a heavily damaged ship that was falling apart while an enemy faction was trying to do the same. A "get the objective and escape" sitrep isn't unique in and of itself, but we had a limit of 8 turns, and every turn something worse and worse would happen as the ship continued to fall apart. Movement routes being blocked off as emergency bulkheads locked. The ship's artificial gravity turning off. Cooling lines bursting and causing hazard zones that gave Heat and Burn. On the final turns entire parts of the map were just getting deleted as narratively those sections of the ship were just completely breaking apart.
>>
>>98427595
minotaur has twice the HP of a goblin, which means it doesnt implode in a single shot like goblin does.

people also underestimate minotaurs core power. you stun the enemy. no roll. no save. nothing. you just pick a guy and he's stunned and there's nothing he can do about it and no way you can fail it.

minotaur can also hand out immobilizes and stuns left and right with metafold maze, especially if you arent the only one on your team with a slow effect. if you pair a minotaur with white witch or vlad systems or have one of them in your party you can just hand out instant stuns all day long

by comparison, goblin dies instantly, but it has double the sensors, and is much more accurate with tech attacks, so its more of a tech sniper, rather than a tech bruiser. it also has more forced movement and actions in its license but has a harder time stunning

so really its apples and oranges. people often undersell the minotaur because it doesnt have any obvious "ooohhh ahhhh big numbers" in its license, but in practice it can be an absolute menace

>>98427648
>while everyone else can treat it as a dump stat and invest in the much more useful stats
>witch hits your dump stat sherman with the 30 damage laser rifle build with predatory logic
lolololol

>>98427713
chom is significantly worse than goblin at invades and tech range

>>98427641
tech has a different role than weapons. again, apples and oranges. weapons are focused bring the guy down numbers machines. most weapons in the game just do one thing, point it at a guy and deal damage to his health. tech isnt focused on damage, but instead keeps a wide spellbook of solutions for different situations, often focused on locking enemies down so your weapon guys can then get easy hits or prevent an enemy from completing an objective. both weapons and tech are valid and have different roles and uses on the field and they are meant to compliment each other.
>>
>>98429512
Tech sucks. One License level in Goblin gets you the only tech you're ever going to use, because Puppet Systems and Eject Power Cores JUST WORK. Every other tech power is super situation, has to hit AND relies on the enemy failing a save, or just plain sucks ass.

My players finished the first mission of OSR.
They had one guy bumrush and destroy the rainmaker by pretty much sacrificing him to the NPCs. Ngl I was kinda sad the rainmaker didn't get to shoot his missiles. The sentinel cleaned up though. That commander template is no joke. By the end of the mission everyone was structured and two were on fire.
Fun encounter but clearly easy to shut down if you're willing to sacrifice a player from the get-go

Its very low-stakes, narratively, which is fine. But if your players lose every fight and the narrative keeps moving forward anyway then its kinda like 'why are we even fighting?' The consequences of losing are so minor.
Also the whole thing is just fights except for the downtime at FOB Saber.

There's plenty of media that does that WITHOUT being gay about it, at least. Like AC6.
>>
>>98433790
>Like AC6
I place the blame for Mechsploitation existing on AC6. So much of the language the writers use, hounds and handlers and the like, is taken directly from AC6. The logo of the main character's is literally a muzzled dog. That game handed the troons a loaded gun and they, unfortunately, did not kill themselves with it for once.

>>
>>98433931
They would've done it anyways with nothing on hand (just look at the "Human Domestication Verse" if you want to see to the depths they'll sink on their own), so I find it hard to blame AC6 for what they already do on their own.

AC6 is absolutely an otome/dating VN with great mecha combat. The three main routes can even be split between
>Husky voiced mechanic milf
>QT cinnamon roll schizotulpa waifu
>Mommydommy AI
>>
>>98434101
They MIGHT have done it anyway, but I think a large part of the shape it took was because of AC6's style and imagery. I think it would have been harder to sexualize something like Brigador or Battletech in the same way.

Anyway AC6 is a bad dating sim because it doesn't let me FUCK RUSTY I WANT TO PIN RUSTY DOWN AND MAKE HIM WHIMPER I WANT TO FLATTEN THAT FAGGY LITTLE STEEL HAZE WITH MY BIGGER REVERSE JOINT LASER LANCE BUILD RAAAAAAAAH

how much do things like immobilization, slowed, forced movement and terrain matter in this game considering everyone has ranged weapons?
>>
>>98432551
this is as hilarious as this is sad.
>>
>>98435541
It matters a lot.
A lot of sitreps require you to be places.
Escorting something to an extraction zone. Going to part of the map to do an action and coming back. Having the team in different places etc.
Even things as simple as moving around the enemy's cover so you can get them in line of sight because if you don't they'll keep shooting you with arcing weapons.
>>
>>98435541
situation but it matters enough to have at least 1 guy on your team who can do it.

lockdowns (immobilize, grapple, stun, etc) and forced movement are useful to have in situations where X enemy needs to get to Y position and you have to stop them. this can be something like a scene objective where the enemy is trying to extract something or hit a detonator, or it can be preventing an enemy melee from getting in your back lines and picking on your artillery and hackers, it can be to prevent enemies from escaping once they're caught, forced movement can bring enemies into and out of range for weapons and objectives but also move them together or set them up for aoe hazards and effects like mines, drones and mortars

there are a ton of uses, but its one of those things that just doesnt make itself apparent in whiteboard lancer where people just beancount damage bonuses on compcon. you wont fully understand its utility until you get your hands on it and actually use it in practice, but having played a white witch/black witch fun with magnets build in a previous campaign i can tell you its very valuable, even if its not dealing a ton of damage.

Grappling is usually a desperate measure to prevent a worse outcome.

I've had my players grapple mission relevant enemies to prevent them moving on the objective or sacrificing their turn to grapple a mobile enemy that would have moved away out of their range on the very next turn.

It is also an amazing GM tool for bulling players.

>Operation Winter Scar
OWS is direct sequel to Solstice Rain. Same planet, same conflict, only now instead of simply walking in on a flaring up conflict, are going full "CIA instructors" for the Union friendly government.
The main plot is that the Vestans manage to construct and launch their first space warship, essentially gaining planetwide air/space superiority. You first try (and fail) to stop its launch and then try to destroy it while it's stopping for refuelling and refits.
I found it pretty boring and much easier gameplay wise. New characters didn't land for me and the story feels really uninvested. For example between first and second mission there is an abrupt 6 month time skip, during which players are supposed to form bonds with NPCs they never interacted with in any meaningful way.
I rewrote it somewhat, such as having the new evil warship destroy the Rio Grande, to build at least some emotional stakes for the players (originally it is just forced out of the orbit temporarily lol).

Do you think that just because the devs are commies that believe what Union claims to believe, that they can't write their setting with a bit of nuance and imperfection for the sake of leaving room for conflict in an RPG's setting?
>>
The fact that the Union is still paying tribute to Ra including avoiding any serious longevity research should show it's not the utopia that it positions itself as being pretty clearly, and as dev intended

Ah yes, "anyone". The Evony fuckers were allowed to make threads. The canmwhores were allowed to make threads. Jim Profit was allowed to make threads. Do you think your own farts smell like perfume? This is why you're fucking hated, because you abuse the privilege of anonymity given to you on here. Yes, privilege. This might be hard for you to understand, given you're a parasite in human skin, but /tg/ is a hobby board where people share their own stuff out of their own passion.

This is why Lancer is hated, because it is not shared here out of passion. It's shared on here because its faggot creator shilled it asking us to PWEASE DONATE TO MUH KICKSTARUR-I MEAN THIS PROJECT UNRELATED TO MEEE - and when it came out, aforementioned trannycord did what all faggots of their ilk did, rabidly shill their shitty d20 homebrew and throw shitfits the moment someone called them a slur. This isn't a general, it's yet another shill thread. You know why? Because everything in the OP is MARKETING MATERIAL. There used to, for a short while, be an ACTUAL Lancer general. Anons actually shared PDFs and LCPs because for a while, despite the aforementioned faggotry, Lancer actually delivered content.

And then it died, because one of the devs ditched the project immediately to work for fucking WotC of all companies, and the other has spat out I think six shitty games on the side as well, whilst wholesale abandoning promised stuff that people paid for - and you fuckers STILL defend this fuckass game. You can't even be bothered to show anything of your own beyond buildfagging and necrobumping with inane commentary, you have nothing of your own to add. Nobody is sharing anything, nobody is making anything, all you have is regurgitation.

You have no passion, you have no creativity. No wonder you're shilling a fucking DnD reskin.

stacks up burn pretty fast, though the chances of enemies just making their check against your burn do get progressively better for them the higher LL you go

Quick and dirty on a semi-function burn maxxing hecatonchires
I know dancing in close range with it isn't always the best but plenty of soft cover areas that become hard cover, uni-comp to regain health and if need be stealth shenanigans should keep you healthy
Overcharge plenty then clear heat to trigger more explosive vents shenanigans
probably a better option than going for 3 balor licenses but can't be arsed to figure out what's more optional given I couldn't fit the typical puppetmaster in without investing way too much into systems

Ive never played balor but I will always agree with Nuclear Cavalier. Looks like a fun build anon
>>
>>98441420
well it's a tonks not a balor they do different things
but it's very much a "watch people burn" style build
if they try to escape the nanites eating them you get to heavy gunner them with a +1 accuracy krakatoa, inflict even more burn, immobilize them, possibly hit their nearby buddy because heavy gunnering with a krakatoa means you don't just target your target, you put down a size 5 cone that has to including your target and anything else you want
then on your turn, because they didn't get far you can just protocol shepard the nanite swarm back onto them
if they try to attack you to break the heavy gunner they're doing so at -2 because you're in your own swarm, that is, if you're not overcharging to hide and not even give them an option to target you

and remember if you have any kind of heat on you when using uni-comp enrage swarm you also trigger explosive vents for 2 extra burn on them

and nano-comp krakatoa is an unnatural abomination, you can stand on the other side of a wall and as long as there's technically any possible path to draw to the other side of the wall you can project your burning goodness through that god damn wall

again though, I'm not entirely sure about Balor 3, so definitely room for improvement, but it is a lot of burn and a lot of nanites on top
>>
>>98441448
what's the advantage of hecaton specifically here compared to balor
>>
>>98441492
Hec's core power deals burn, Balor's doesn't.

>>98441543

>>
>>98441492
well since we're burnmaxxing, razor swarm inflicts burn very reliably, doubly so with heavy gunner to force them to stick around you, and enrage swarm just adds even more burn
Balor on the other hand doesn't actually have any innate way to inflict burn other than by swarm/hive nanites which the Tonks also gets
There's additionally the factor that we want enemies to trigger our heavy gunner rather than shoot us to end it, and the Balor with it's 6 evasion isn't dodging anything, Tonks at 10 evasion and with +2 difficulty from soft cover rather than +1 stands a better chance, since with impaired from heavy gunner thats +3 difficulty and as far as I'm aware innate accuracy of npc's usually only goes up to +2 so you're forcing disadvantage
Tonks is also faster (5 vs 3) which lets you get in position for your close range shenanigans more, and if you need extra movement options honestly going Atlas 1 for zipline shenanigans is possibly a good move that I might rebuild it for
And course tonks lets you hide which is supremely powerful with heavy gunner since again, we want them to move to trigger a free AoE reaction that hits multiple people preferably

Balor does have some things going for it due to size 2, explosive vents become better with it, and it's easier to have multiple enemies with Heavy Gunner 3 under lock, but it's definitely a build made with the Tonks in mind rather than Balor

There's also another factor in that Hecatoncheires canonically is a weapon of terror made by the Baronies, and now you're putting HA approved napalm onto your weapon of terror which then through nanocomp turns it into living napalm so you can make people very fucking nervous as to exactly "what" your pilot has been up to before the mission

oh something I forgot to mention while that build is LL6, you can get a semi-functional version as early as LL3, all you need is LL2 Balor to get the frame and LL1 genghis to get the krakatoa

question: what are the baseline rules interactions every new player should know about?

These ones.
P.58 to p.73 will be your reference most of the time.
>>
>>98441713
if you can understand the basic section on action economy (skirmish, full action, boost, etc), and all the core actions like brace, invade, stabilize, overcharge, etc then you're 90% of the way there and all the shit on the mechs is actually pretty self explanatory.

the combat and actions section of the book in section 3 doesnt look that dense but a lot of players just breeze through it and dont take the time to actually read through it and commit it to memory so you end up with players asking why you need barrage or full tech when they get 2 quick actions a turn.

having a screenshot or printout of the status effects page and structure/stress charts is also very handy. i highly recommend screenshots of those and the quick reference page when getting started.

also really read the rules on grapples and rams. they're a bit more complicated than attacks and come with a lot of restrictions, effects and rolls and it can be helpful knowing that off the top of your head.

yeah sorry the page didnt refresh and i was still typing while your post was landing for me and it updated after i hit reply

so what kind of builds are you thinking about?
>>
>>98441788
I know (or at least think I know) certain things, but there's a whole lot I don't know
>riders apply to aoes unless they specify attack rolls
>you can grapple allies to take them with you
>drones can engage enemies
>drones count as allies for hacking purposes
>>
>>98441713
coming off of other ttrpg's one that trips up a lot of people is that you don't count as your own ally
>>
>>98441793
>so what kind of builds are you thinking about?

trying to figure that out. There's very little guidance for building useful characters under LL6. guidance on LL0 especially is pretty important
>>
>>98441813
>LL0
you take an Everest, you slap a heavy machine gun in your heavy slot and you enjoy doing whatever else you fancy
>>
>>98441813
my guidance for LL0 is be a generalist. theres no strength vs dexterity vs intelligence in this game (for the most part) so a character you want to shoot with can just as easily pick up a sword or throw out a hack with relatively competent rolls, especially early game, so like if you are starting with an everest which has generous mounts, i'd get at least 1 melee weapon, and at least 1 ranged weapon with a range of over 5. it doesnt have to be anything you're planning to take into the end game, but it will help early on and then you can specialize more once you unlock your target license frame you want and go from there

there are also options to retrain as you go so you arent locked into a choice if you dont like it early.

it may be worth watching some of the old 11dragonkid meme videos, they're actually pretty dense with helpful information on builds although i dont know if he's put out more stuff with more recent 3rd party expansions, but all the core stuff is there

https://www.youtube.com/@11dragonkid11/playlists

the custom werks playlist is full of frame specific videos that drill down on specific frame interactions, strengths, weaknesses, and lists some viewer submitted builds to see some of the shit people came up with
>>
>>98441837
Ive been watching his stuff, but like I said, not a lot of guidance before LL6, which is kind of an issue because you have no idea what to do for the first 6 levels before you get there
>>
>>98441841
yeah, so like first, pick a license that you want to build around, your "core" license, you can pick this at zero even if you cant unlock it yet, just have an idea in your head based off the art and vibes, the art usually informs the type of playstyle a mech has more or less.

LL0-1 you're just gonna be in everests so dont sweat the details too much, shoot a heavy machine gun, swing a charge blade, just have fun. LL2 you get your new frame, and this is where you can start to get more specific and pick weapons and gear that actually compliments the kind of playstyle you want to go for (although you can also remain a generalist all the way till LL12, its a valid playstyle).

most people take at least their primary license all the way till LL3, because not only are a lot of the juiciest systems in the back half of the license, but it also nets you enough levels in a specific manufacturer to gain access to their core bonus (you need 3 LLs in any combination of a single manufacturers licenses per core bonus of theirs you want to unlock, though GMS core bonuses only require 3LLs of anything and are solid picks too). i would recommend for most players just to truck straight through 3 levels of a single license first.

LL4-6 is a different story. this is where you can start hunting and searching through licenses and talents for specific interactions that magnify your core licenses strengths (such as a hydra build splashing into another mech like black witch to get a drone), or compliment its weaknesses (like deaths head splashing into metalmark to get some escape and hiding tools to avoid opponents) and from here the builds really diversify in so many ways its hard to advise further without knowing your goals.
>>
>>98441841
LL1 is a bit weird, since usually you're not really looking to build towards a later level, you're just looking for something that makes your everest better, or possibly you're in a Chomolungma and you've picked up Goblin 1 and want to be the hacker

as a rule of thumb you never want to be in a Sagarmatha

a lot of licenses flat out can't do the thing they're supposed to be doing yet at LL1, so you end up picking something generic like say, if you're planning on using CQB you're got vanguard and 1 level in Tortuga because the deck sweeper is a flat upgrade over the shotgun in every way that matters, even if you're never touching the tortuga license again come LL2
Standouts for LL1 really are generally the ones that just do something a GMS thing will do, but better, a solid option so to speak
If you've got 0 ideas what to do with LL1, aint nothing wrong with just picking a level in gilgamesh no matter what else you're planning later and just having it be LL0 but better

LL2 is generally speaking where as a new player you're finally excited about your build because you get a new frame and it's usually going to be about exploring whichever frame you like best
>>
>>98441861
honestly, I've seen a lot of people just pick Overpowered Caliber as their first core power, then only switch out to something manufacturer specific at a later date
>>
>yeah, so like first, pick a license that you want to build around, your "core" license, you can pick this at zero even if you cant unlock it yet,

I'm not really sure what I want. I definitely want to do something more nanite-focused with a horus liscence, but neither balor nor hecatonchires fit the playstyle I typically like (blaster/controller/swiss army knife)
>>
>>98441885
ack, meant for >>98441861
>>
oh right for new players, the Everest is the default mech because it's a good introduction to the game, straight forward and very difficult to mess up
Not because it's a bad mech, in fact it's entirely possible to stick to your Everest until LL12 and never feel like you're contributing less than another frame
Chomolungma despite being a starter mech is even more exemplary of this, it's genuinely one of the best hacking frames out there, and gets even better the more difficult the missions are because it is surprisingly durable by hacker mech standards, I've seen more than a few players just cherry pick good hacking systems and never switch off of the Chomolungma or switch to a Goblin at LL2, proceed to lose 2 structure to a single attack, and then switch back to the relative safety of a Chomolungma
>>
>>98438008
Yeah I made these maps myself, so I added some references hoping to get a chuckle from my players who spot them.
>>
>>98441885
>hecatonchires fit the playstyle I typically like (blaster/controller/swiss army knife)
Hecatonchires is one of the most versatile Horus frames, with a bit of effort you can absolutely make it act in whatever role you want
>>

Making Ace Combat references in your Lancer game is perhaps a bit on the nose
Then again we've all used the AC soundtrack at one point or the other, it's almost unavoidable
>>
>>98441906
I firmly believe that making transparent references or even wholesale homages is sometimes a good thing and a useful tool.
I don't mean millennial "I know what this is", but when you basically put your players in an Ace Combat briefing, they instantly get an idea of the tone and type of story they should expect and can react accordingly.
>>

>>98441871
yeah GMS core powers and weapons are legit, they arent bad at all. its not like DnD where the starting gear gets outdated and needs replaced, its just very meat and potatoes while the license specific weapons are more playing into precise niches.

>>98441885
you could start by finding a blaster with a nice weapon profile you like, take that to LL3, then start picking up balor or hydra levels and you can mix nanites and swarms into your build.

a hydra/balor is also an option. the hydras ghast nexus can be used as either a gun or a drone, and that would let you play blaster/controller. the only trick there is that hydra and drones can be a bit of bookkeeping if you're a new player. not an impossible amount, but each drone has its own health pool to track. talents like drone commander and centimane will help enhance your drones with more health and your nexus guns with more status effects, and like >>98441871
says you can always pack an overpowered caliber core bonus onto a nexus weapon for a nasty big nanite gun if that sounds appealing. and there's a lot of synergy between hydra and balor. if you want to run drones, i recommend hydra for your frame. if you want to just run nexus gun nanomachine blasters, id throw the hydras guns on a balor or hec frame. things like heavy gunner or walking armory also work perfectly well with nexus weapons, they only care about mount size.

and pic related is worth keeping in the back of your head. if you try something and decide you just dont like it, you can always swap it out later. some things you just wont figure out if you like it or not until you try them in the field
>>
what's the intended tactic with heavy gunner? you don't just stand out in the open and let them shoot you, do you?
>>
>>98443233
well one of the sillier heavy gunner tactics is with a range 15 weapon, activate heavy gunner, then move away, you only need to be within 10 range to activate it, but you can be outside of 10 range to trigger the attack
it's also a decent way of putting an unavoidable impaired on someone
and course if you're playing as a more tank character, providing an incentive to shoot at you rather than enemies is always nice
>>
is hecton better off hiding all the time or just using it to disengage?
>>
>>98444831
I mean, you are running around in what's functionally a goblin
that said the +2 difficulty in soft cover does help a fair bit, and if you're not being an idiot who doesn't put points in hull you should be able to tank a hit and slink away after getting hit
>>
How dice-centric is this game in the long run? I'm playing for the first time - Solstice Rain - and there were close calls in mission one and two but I got demolished in the third round by the Spectre's Overwatch and died in 2 strikes, felt decidedly like there was little counterplay to it. I could reasonably have scanned but my priority was disengaging, and another mech was repositioning me, I think its also influenced by me dying at two structure and having 5 turns to twiddle my thumbs

Honestly when I look at that character's background what I think of is a Drake. Swallow all that guilt and paranoia so you can turn yourself into a killdozer. Be the bunker and shield you failed to be.
>>
>>98446756
you appear to be breaking out in hives, might want to do something about that

I assume it's mostly pure battefield manipulation shenanigans with the missile racks being more emergency than anything else?
>>
>>98446929
Looks like the missile racks are for abusing stormbringer and shoving people into the drones as an additional reward for spamming Lock-on
>>
>>98446929
>>98446966

both. i figure if you're going to be spamming lock on you might as well use it. missile racks are great because get to stack push, prone, and your hives' electric burst. racks are conserved by only firing 1 at a time ensuring you'll never need to reload. powerful support control.

interestingly, if you're willing to sacrifice invis you can prepare lock on for when an ally is about to be attacked to move then out of the way to bail them out
>>
>>98448061
there's always an option with especially the ranger variant to simply go spotter 3 and use Bentham / Foucault as your attack option since the 1/round movement an ally takes happens between the lock on being established and the spotter 3 actions so allies can move adjacent to you with that

it's also funny because nothing you do here counts as an attack so it can be done with retracted profile is active or hell, nothing here breaks hidden status either (since invigorating scanners moves them with a reaction of theirs, not of yours)

>interestingly, if you're willing to sacrifice invis you can prepare lock on for when an ally is about to be attacked to move then out of the way to bail them out
yeh, gets even better at LL6 if you can somehow fit 3 levels of Horus in it for lesson of held image since you no longer need to ready an action
>>
I know it's some heavy anti-synergy but something stickles my funny bone about a dusk wing with a tempest charged blade, gyges and hyperdense armor

slowed means very little if you've got speed 7 and fly, and a dusk wing tanking a heavy weapon to the face is silly
>>
>>98448481
>the enemy's face when you're still alive
>>
>>98449759
GM was actually a complete bro in that regard, and played into it a fair amount of times with enemies shooting the dusk wing and the dust clearing leaving it no worse for the wear

I take it lancer is popular? How is it for someone who has never really played a table top game before?
>>
>>98452267
I'd say it's a known quantity but not something you can expect any random group to have played. In some ways picking it up is fairly easy, keywords are rigorously defined and used consistently (a rarity for TTRPGs) and the online tool Comp/Con is incredible for building your mech. The flip side is that Lancer is very overtly a tactical skirmish game about mech combat. The noncombat rules are a joke. The pilot stat sheet is a joke. The rules for how someone not in a mech can interact with mechs are a joke. It's the the point some people earnestly recommend finding some other system like Blades in the Dark or Sprawl to handle Pilot shit and just use the mech rules for when people are in mechs. End result is your GM needs to either be extremely flexible or decently experienced to keep shit on rails when you inevitably run out of rules scaffolding for something you want to do.

middle of the road in terms of popular. not the global superstar dnd is, but its not an obscure game anymore either, its gotten decently large and had a lot of third party support

as far as difficulty to grasp, the game ultimately boils down to usually rolling a 20 sided dice and then maybe 1 or 2 six sided dice and adding or subtracting them based on circumstances. numbers rarely get over 20 or 30 in this game, so overall number crunch is quite low, beancounting is kept to a minimum except for a few mechs that use a lot of drones or deployables.

the roleplaying is pretty simple. pick a few social attributes for out of mech RP, get +2, +4, or +6 to them as you invest points. roll a dice, see if you get high enough to succeed, thats about it. RP is mostly meant to be talking it out, its not real complicated.

for the mechs, gameplay comes down to spaces and actions. the board is made up of spaces like a chess board but they are hexagon shaped. things like range of weapons and speed of movement are measured in quantities of these spaces.

then theres the "action economy", which is a bit of jargon for how many and what kind of things your mech can do in a given turn in chapter 3, combat. a couple things to remember, you can only do each action once per turn (unless you heat up your mech to buy a free action), actions will have a type, you can either do 2 quick actions, like fire a regular weapon, move an extra time or perform a hack. or you can do 1 full action like fire several weapons or fire a superheavy weapon. there are other actions like brace where you defend against incoming attacks and stabilize where you cool off your mech. most mechs gameplay ends up being some combination of moving and attacking with a weapon, so in a given turn, you'd move 3-6 spaces on average depending on your speed, then find an enemy in range of a weapons range stat from you, roll a D20 and see if you hit.

thats the game in a nutshell
>>
>>98452364
my group used 5th age for out of mech stuff. its also a dnd adaptation so it mapped almost 1 to 1 with lancers gameplay, it was very seamless apart from needing an extra page of character sheets and another pdf
>>
>>98452364
>>98452267
It's a also not a mech game. There is no way to differentiate a mech in lancer from a human guardsman or psyker on dark heresy
>>
>>98452898
I apologise, actually there is. Dark Heresy has locational damage and a crit system that simulates locational injuries and death.
Lancer just has a pool of meat points and maybe once you've chipped through these you might blow all tge weapons off or kill the fighter. Mech, sorry, mech.

>>98452267
Its one of the more popular ttrpgs in the mech genre. If you can pick up D&D 5e then you'll have no problem with Lancer. The difficulty of picking up the game spikes for the DM as they need to do a lot more prep than your average D&D DM to come up with sitreps and interesting encounters by understanding all the NPC mechs and how they interact with each other. There's also a lot more load on their shoulders when it comes to roleplay and out-of-mech gameplay as the system just doesn't have very much infrastructure helping them out in those areas.
If you're a player the game is a blast. If you're a DM the game is more labor intensive but definitely worth it if you like crafting narratives and cool encounters in the mech genre.
Idk if you ever watched MegasXLR on Toonami but that's what being a player in Lancer feels like.

if dark heresy didnt have a warhammer skin on it no one would actually play the game. its deeply unfun and full of needless specificity that bogs the game to a crawl
>>
>>98453241
It's actually really fun and my players love it. And for all the "needless specifity" it still doesn't need an app to run combat, unlike a certain dnd offshoot wearing a mecha skin.

>the other has spat out I think six shitty games on the side as well, whilst wholesale abandoning promised stuff that people paid for
This is the saddest part, honestly. It was pretty obvious that Tom grew weary of the game and the moment he realised it's popular enough that people will make stuff for it without him even needing to pay for it, he ditched it immediately and went to do something else. It's even worse because ICON felt like a good refinement of Lancer combat rules and I was really looking forward to it but it's on like its third or four total redesign and I'm honestly starting to think he's done with it too.

I think its more that of all the games you could have picked Dark Heresy is probably one of the worst ones. The book is notoriously awfully written and the system is a such a slog GW ditched it for Wrath&Glory.
>>
>>98452267
Much more known than the majority of mech ttrpgs, not really that popular outside it. It’s more known for the memes that read like a car barfed up a pdf over pictures of the mechs then for the setting or gameplay. Considering I’ve heard the game is more like 4e D&D than anything, I probably wouldn’t suggest it for a first timer to ttrpgs in general, but it seems functional enough you could muddle your way through. Just don’t expect the same level of grit and bookkeeping that would go into the other games of this subgenre, as well as having to homebrew lot of the aspects not directly related to the mech combat, although maybe that’s a positive if that’s what you’re looking for.

See, if I was entirely ignorant about Lancer, I would agree with you. But I'm not, so all you're doing is riding around on a high horse saying that older games are not as good as yours because yours has an app that runs it for you. This isn't a thread about Lancer, as much as you would like to say it is. It's a shill thread. Do you disagree? Great, post something worthwhile. Add to the conversation. Post a PDF. Post an LCP. It's what literally every other general does. If you want other people to contribute, you have to bring them in. This isn't doing that, it's just giving them the marketing pitch and expecting anyone who wants to run it to shell out for themselves. Every thread that goes "have you heard of X game" is rightfully met with "post a PDF". You're expecting anons to just accomodate you whilst you give nothing in return - ironically, quite like what Lancertroons believe communism is. Do you have any real understanding of what giving back to the community even means? If you're not happy with being called a shill, a faggot, a commie, then do your part and start an actual general. Make some actual community resources. You have none of these, because you're posting as part of yet another astroturfing campaign here on /tg/. The fact that you assume that this is because I dislike Lancer and because I'm "king" says everything about you that I could possibly ever need to know. Someone tells you the emperor wears no clothes, you immediately start criticizing the clothes they're wearing.
>>
>>98454520

>>
>>98454678
Talk about it then. Go right ahead. I'm not stopping you, in fact I told you this exact same shit last thread. Talk a bit more about Solstice Rain, post something. It would be pretty fun to put together a proper LL0-4 adventure and post my progress here.

I posted it last thread but this was the premise Im working with. Haven't given a thought as to how the adventure would actually start, where it takes place, and what factions ought to be in it apart from 4thComm, Horus, and the Horizon Collective, pic related. I got the idea from the real Isis/Ra myth: https://1001stories.co.uk/stories/the-story-of-ra-and-isis

I've always kinda wondered, but what really is the point of a minotaur?
not systems, the systems are pretty good but the minotaur mech itself seems like, it has 2 traits that benefit pilots inside it, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the game actually expects you to do with either
And it's a controller, but it also sorta but not really does defender things, and has 8 sensor range which really isn't all that good, and it's forced engage would be a lot more dangerous if it wasn't a size 1 so enemies can easily path around it

the auto escalating slowed is nice but, I genuinely can't figure out a good reason to use it over an Everest

man, the point of this thing is to shut down other mech's and since its not nearly as squishy as a goblin you can actually exist on the scene without being domed by everyone that looks at you
note that there is no save to the initial stun
>>
>>98456131
I dont have a lot of experience playing as or alongside the minotaur, but it looks like its supposed to be a big tarpit, stopping and slowing enemies (which is important).
The uh, cockpit/pilot stuff does seem pretty bad. If one of my players was playing the minotaur I'd probably let them find some exotic pilot gear that makes the 'invert cockpit' frame trait worth something.
It should probably be size 2 also, but I guess you could just take the IPS-N core bonus for that.
Yeah idk anon it seems like its just a big doofy tank/tarpit. I agree its not the most exciting mech.
>>
>>98456182
ignore this post as i cant read apparently
>>
>>98456182
sure but like, that's 1x per mission, not even scene, mission, it can save your arse to be sure but it's deceptively bad because every boss enemy under the sun has multiple initiatives and "clear any 1 status at the start of your turn" so against them it's pretty worthless

and as far as hacker mechs that can exist on the scene without dying when someone looks at them, Chomolungma only has 2 hp less than a Minotaur, 7 extra sensor range and significantly better traits
>>
>>98456212
Thats because the chomolungma is god damn broken at low license levels. Fucking Kai should be banned from game design.
>>
>>98456228
frankly even at LL6 it's always looming around the corner of any hacker mech going "are you sure you'd not rather pilot me"
but even with other mechs, for minotaur systems, my favorite home for them is the Tortuga, which wasn't even envisioned as a primary hacker mech but 15 sensor range, 2 armor and the ability to make enemies truly regret being within your vicinity make them just flat out better at being a minotaur than a minotaur
>>
File: gremlin.png (129 KB, 439x309)
129 KB PNG
>>98456212
i feel like youre locking onto what the mech itself does rather than the licence "tree" its within, minotaur has some of the best hack's in the game
know that piece of shit sniper that has to spend a full turn reloading your DM likes putting once every battlemap? yeah what if all his shots were into the back of his allies head instead? law of blades is possibly the best hack in the game (assuming your allies let you go first) letting you really abuse the enemies lineup. law of blades is particularly annoying as once you make the opposing mech boost backwards with slave systems you can follow up with the minotaur's onboard tech to slow them. any melee enemy is now gonna spend a small eternity to get to you or your allies
chains of prometheus is also hilarious, is it good with 8 sensors? not particularly, but if you were to put it on a little bastard starting with 20 sensor range on the other hand... the sheer action economy fuckery you can do is amazing.
>>
>>98456344
oh no that's what I said in my original post >>98455789
I like the minotaur systems, I like them a lot even, I'm just absolutely baffled as to what the minotaur as a frame brings
Hell law of blades is better off in the hands of just about any hacker mech that's not a minotaur because it benefits a LOT from having extra sensor range

My issue isn't with the minotaur license it's with the minotaur frame, it's also why I brought up the chomolungma since you can just sub that one in for a minotaur, onboard minotaur slow is okay, but held back a bit by being a quick rather than a free or a reaction, meanwhile the chomolungma can just use the minotaur systems, and then chose to if they really need get a free 1/scene extra tech action which with minotaur control systems gets really silly
>>
>>98456344
>>98456391
oh and my favorite bullshit thing to do with minotaur systems is even something else
ready an action to fold space an enemy mech at the start of their turn, they just blip out of existence and stop being a problem for a whole turn in a way that isn't a condition so boss enemies can't easily shrug it off
and yes that's again something that a goblin can do far better than the minotaur because blipping someone out of existence gets a lot easier if you have sensor 20 than 8
>>
>>98455789
>>98456391
Fomorian Frame can increase your size to make Localized Maze better, but that's 5 LLs minimum. Black Thumb talent (Long Rim supplement) is already really good when paired with any NHP and Invert Cockpit does have some synergy with it, but running around outside of your mech is generally not the best idea. But it does, however, let you roleplay Char Aznable and headshot a motherfucker with a bazooka.
>>
>>98456880
that's another weird thing though
Minotaur doesn't have any NHP as part of it's licenses to combine with invert cockpit

fomorian is good, but it locks you into 3 IPS-N licenses which kinda restricts what you can do (really minotaur should have been a size 2 from the beginning, and what would have been exceedingly cool is if invert cockpit also gave a 1/scene ability to be both inside and outside your cockpit at the same time, letting you take pilot actions and mech actions until your "outside" pilot got hit and you were forced back inside)

>Hacking in lancer feels very strange logic-wise. Why is the hacker with their delicate hardware walking around in a mech into combat where they can be shot at instead of squatting in a van a kilometre away from the fight
Jamming. Lancer as a setting is so used to horrible reality warping space magic thst every battlefield is a storm of EECM and its impossible to get anything done outside of direct LOS.

Take 2 points in Vlad.
Take 1 point in blackbeard for muscle netting.
Barrage with two melee weapons
Swing to hit enemy with main weapon.
Trigger duelist 3
Free action grapple
Grapple inflicts immobilize.
Immobilize inflicts shredded.
Smack enemy with heavy melee ignoring armour and resistence.
Genuinely the easiest way to inflict shredded with the Vlad.

Eidolons are what happens when you listen to SISYPHUS and stop cycling your NHP. The Paracausual blinkspace entity Union gaslit into thinking like a human manifests directly in realspace and everything turns squiggly.
Mechanically they're a boss rush. Eidolons are made up of a bunch of different layers. Each layer has its own stats with its own weapons, systems and obtuse gimmicks. You pick which layers you want, pick the order of manifestation and players have to cope with that.

how do I most closely approximate the balor 1/swallowtail ranger 2 gameplay experience at ll0?
>>

Maybe take all nexus weapons?
Idk thats tough. Can you delay that playstyle to LL3 or is this for a 1 shot and you're locked to LL0?

I mean, we're starting at LL0. Also, I wasn't planning on using nexuses

idk about digital, but starfinder, which is pathfinders scifi spinoff, has a bunch of maps like that.

also just my opinion, but having run lancer a few campaigns now and tried both, i personally think it actually works better on square grids than hexes. and square grids are much much easier for most players to get their heads around how movement and range measuring works compared to hexes.

Running lancer on normal RPG maps is suboptimal, since they usually lack obstructions and cover. You can sometimes annotate shit, but it takes a lot of effort. I personally recommend giving Lancer Map tool a try. They may not be as pretty as some but at least they are consistent and easily readable.
Map channel on their discord has tons of community made maps

What's the best place to find a lancer game online?
