Magic the Gathering thread without posting or discussing Universes Beyond

>how do I search for non-UB cards?
On Scryfall "-is:ub"
On EDHREC selecting "Universes Beyond" under Card Filters hides them.

>Can I play UB cards even if I hate them?
You can do whatever you want, but you shouldn't contribute to the enshittification of this game. More people taking a stance against UB means WotC have to acknowledge it
Proxy them if you must, or wait for them to get in-universe reprints as a few already have

If they cut the 80s shit out of Duskmourn sure. I fucking love the lore of Marina Vendrell and Valgavoth and it was the one thing that made an entire plane being 1 haunted house actually work for me. I want to see more of them, I want more Rooms and enchantment support. But I want less cheerleaders and Sony Walkmans

These Mystery Booster Commander cards look so dumb. The "rulebreaker" text doesn't actually break any rules it's just templating for things that already exist.

Like the otter lets you add instants and sorceries of 1 other color to your deck. but that's literally just Partner without having a 2nd commander to cast

And the angel lets you play angels of any color even though it's monowhite, but they could do the exact same thing if they put WUBRG in the text box

Yeah they could have changed the rules for the draft but whatever.
I'm more annoyed that there's 2 cards that are in the set that are exactly what I want. One is fine, no real complaints. The other though is exactly what I want and they went and made it fucking monored. I already have a monored deck and monored is really bad colors for what this new card is doing so I'm genuinely torn about whether to build it.

In any case, the fact that these are all gonna be like $10 and unobtainable for a while due to limited supply pisses me off
>>
>>98445108
It's pretty upsetting that the seemingly "gift to fans" set is a limited event exclusive set, definitely. Like they couldn't convince Hasbro that existing fans actually wanted a new Commander Legends set filled with tribal dudes that don't have any commanders and referenced characters without cards. A love letter to lore fans abd smoothbrained tribalshitters alike.
And yeah, I saw that girl too and was saddened that shit didn't have other colors or some rulebreaker thing going on.
>>
>>98445201
>I saw that girl too and was saddened that shit didn't have other colors or some rulebreaker thing going on.
You have no idea man. I have wanted a well themed puppet commander for fucking ever. The options are surprisingly limited. I need it to be themed around puppets and be about controlling other players or permanents. No option has ever had both.
Then the monkey's paw curls and I get this shit. She's clearly part of the fucking rakdos cult too, and her flavor text references a rakdos enchantment. The more I think about it the madder I get
>>
>>98445307
It's much more of a blue+red thing since red threatens and blue steals. Not much with regards to puppet members, though, but you can always proxy for theme.
>>
>>98445548
Black has a few cards that change control of thing, like Blim. There's also that Jasper guy from OTJ that makes creatures you control but don't own into mercenaries. I don't think there's a single good reason she couldn't be rakdos.

The sad thing is she probably just goes in the 99 of better commanders.
I'm toying with a decklist now and there's just nothing coherent I can make happen with it. Not knowing what triggered abilities you will even have to copy as you play her (if any at all) really sucks. And red isn't good at giving all your creatures triggered abilities like some other colors can.
The best I can come up with is that you just play every variation of Fling, steal your opponents creatures with "until end of turn" red theft spells, and then sac them for value instead of giving them back. But even then, that would fit rakdos so much better than monored.

>you can always proxy for theme.
I don't proxy, and even if I did what would be the point? There's a different feel to an official WotC card. Anyone at any time could proxy their own spin on Secret Lair, but they don't, they pay out the ass for WotC to do an OFFICIAL proxy.

>What's the most memorable moment you have from playing this nightmare of a game, anon?
When a guy at my LGS was opening his prize packs and throwing out the trash, he threw away a Shaman of the Great Hunt (intentionally; he commented on how shit it was). I had been wanting one for my shitty Mardu tokens deck (I was a kid at the time my deckbuilding was ass) so I took it out of the cardboard bin. Guy walks up behind me, takes it off the table, goes 'Hey I didn't say you could have MY card!' and tears it in half in front of me. I start crying like an autstic little bitch, he gets like a 6 month ban from the LGS.
And before you ask yes, he did play Esper control in RtR followed by some other control shit in Khans block forget what the best variant was in Khans. Quintissential That Guy.

>uh depends what you mean by "much"...about €8?

Felt like my good dead of the day. I did want a copy, I wouldn't have lied about it but there's still that part of my brain that just goes "you had it, it was in your hands, it was free"
But it matters to me more to be honest I guess

Why does nobody play this card? It's like 20 cents but it would be a good finisher in dozens of decks, especially token decks like Adrix and Nev
>>
>>98487284
It's green and blue.
Also all of my decks are just engine builders, so having all of my creature be the same creature would not be good, outside of a couple of them like Blood Avatar, but that's not in-color
>>
>>98487555
I mean, there's a reason most copy spells either make you choose a non-legendary or simply do not say the copy is non-legendary so you have to make it non-legendary some other way.

Sure a big part of copy spells can be the ETB, but there's tons of legendaries that become busted when there's more than one of them on the field
Simic in particular fucking loves copies. But you could be running it in 4 and 5 color decks anyway
>>
>>98487617
I imagine part of the reason is also that it's the back of the card, and people don'tget that far.
For me I have no deck, non, that would both benefit from it and has both colors for it, and I have a LOT of decks.
There are definitely decks that could benefit from it, though, yeah.
>>
>>98487284
what the other anon said. I have exactly one deck that has blue and green (with black) and it doesn't really want everything being the same creature altho the effect is nice. I feel there needs to be a more specific reason to run this over say, a single non-legend clone that is more versatile since it stays around
I'd even go as far as to say this side of the spell is a "win more" because it does nothing for a good while after a boardwipe
>>
Guys I really miss set blocks. They didn't all have to be 3 blocks. Two was fine, and you can always throw in a spicy one block set now and then, but overall I miss them.
>>
>>98488422
>>98488623
I'd put it in this for a start.
>all my creatures are now a copy of the best legendary on the board

>this side of the spell is a "win more" because it does nothing for a good while after a boardwipe
I could accept not seeing its strength but this is a dumb statement. Thousands of cards do nothing after a board wipe. And you're in some of the best colors for casting creatures and making tokens, so it's not like it would take much to rebuild a board
>>
>>98489759
You wouod indeed put the clone effect in a clone deck, yes.
You are right, it is a game ender and I suppose is underplayed (I don't have the stats) for the decks it does go in, but it really doesn't go in most decks that have UG. Would be huge in WU.
>>
>>98437345
>using UB memes
>>
>>98490168
>You wouod indeed put the clone effect in a clone deck, yes.
You would also put in token decks which was also what I said
>>
>>98489759
that's the sultai deck I have too and the reason I don't have the spell in my deck is because I have noticed I almost never have more than 3 other creatures on board before getting got after protection, recursion and what not. this is because I don't create tokens but rather play creatures with effects I want to clone and that is slow. so as my commander already does the clone effect I don't REALLY need another card like that, let alone a version that clones legends to make a board "full" of volraths if that's the best legend. it would be what, like 4 or so -1/-1 counters and then I have to have more mana to make them something useful to make someone dead on that turn.
all this to say you should run the spell if you are churning out a lot of tokens, yeah
>>
>>98490703
Are you running quasiduplicate and cackling counterpart? You should be
>>
>>98490703
>let alone a version that clones legends to make a board "full" of volraths if that's the best legend. it would be what, like 4 or so -1/-1 counters and then I have to have more mana to make them something useful
Didn't even catch this retardation
Buddy you use 1 Volrath to copy something else, and then because that's a creature you control all your creatures become a copy of that, instead of making multiple Volraths and then having each of them use their ability??? Tf you even talking about
>>
>>98490736
not cackling anymore because the flashback is simply too expensive these days but used to have both
>>98490748
you see, these are the kinds of hoops my deck is not equipped to jump through, on top of the one extra mana and many more creatures instead of just one or two, the og volrath now needs to put the counter on something. this means going to combat so you can only cast the clone spell on second main or next turn, both too late. and if you are putting counters on useful stuff without him that's another card to this already 3+ card combo which is too fragile I feel. especially without a lot of tokens

what I do run is naga flescrafter tho
>>
>>98490847
>he og volrath now needs to put the counter on something.
Not if it's already there, and fortunately earlier in the year you got a set with an entire subtheme about -1/-1 counters and a -1/-1 counter precon
Look man you're obviously the kind of guy who just enjoys inventing hurdles to allow you to keep on living exactly as you already are- it's fine, but just don't bother replying
>>
>>98490897
idk about the hostility but I feel you didn't read the reply fully as you ignored the need of even more cards to make the clone spell worth it. what comes to your new precon argument you enjoy inventing, there were like 2 new cards that do the whole counter placing thing and arguably only the reanimator is potentially a spell that could bring back creatures worth cloning. also it doesn't make the amount of cards any fewer to execute all this.
if you feel like running away from reasons people are not playing the spell, it's fine too.
>>
>>98490689
If your token deck ran enough big boys to justify it, sure.
>>
>you don't need an unlimited hand size, just keep the best 7 and discard the rest!
I hate this advice so much and it always comes from oldheads
It's retarded. That's not how cards work. There is no objectively "best 7" cards in a hand, it's a collection of various cards for various situations. Even something as simple as how many lands is a good idea to keep can change from moment to moment. And then there's situations where you keep the "best 7" for the time, and then the game changes and you wish you'd kept something else.

I WILL be playing Reliquary Tower and Thought Vessel in every deck
>>
>>98493019
>I WILL be playing Reliquary Tower and Thought Vessel in every deck
If you aren't fairly consistantly needing it, there's not much of an argument for having it. If you don't ever need it in a game Reliquary Tower is a Wastes and Thought Vessel is the worst 2-drop mana rock that comes into play untapped. If your deck can handle that, that's fine, but +3-color decks really, really shouldn't. Even 2-color decks, honestly.
Having them in your deck without a moderately consistant way to use them is like putting an enchantment boardwipe in your deck, it's just too specific to be useful 99% of the time.

I don't need a reason other than the fact I want an unlimited hand size.
Maybe I get lucky and draw a lot, maybe someone plays group hug and I draw a lot, maybe they're trying to mill me out by draw. In any case versatility is valuable in this game and having more cards in hand makes me more versatile

>+3-color decks really, really shouldn't. Even 2-color decks, honestly.

>Do you exclusively play Arena?

Yeah no fucking shit, if I'm playing online I want to take advantage of the technology and not have it played exactly like in person but now with the added disadvantage of having to wrangle something like TTS's jank-ass controls

I played Yugioh and Keyforge on unofficial clients and even they could automate card effects, it's not much to ask for

I think the closest that we have outside of Arena and maybe MTGO (not sure, never used it) is FORGE, which is actually part automated player and part whole singleplayer videogame. There's currently 135 previews from the Standard legal Star Trek set and 41 from the commander product. So Star Trek previews currently outnumber Reality Fracture previews more than 4:1

Hang on, he's right. Modern cards have a totally different feel.

I've grown past thinking that means they're worse, but there's a reason retro formats are so popular. People want to go back and play a version of the game they isn't the same as today's formats. NTA but that's completely apples to oranges.
You being a graphic designer really doesn't hold much weight for things being beautiful. Graphic design is about as soulless as it gets. It's more psychology than anything, things looking "clean" and drawing the eye where you want.
That said, while the old frames (mostly) look nice, the modern (not current) frames look the best of the three by far. A great mix of the soul of old frames with a design that conveys the information much, much more clearly.
The current frame took that and said "but we need an area we can put all the credits on the card where it can be seen more clearly", and then just said fuck it by taking the modern design and adding a shotty-looking black area at the bottom, rounding out the beatiful top corners, and giving the box more of a drop shadow. Gross.
>>
>>98520500
The old frame compliments the art, settling quietly around it. The new frame clashes with the art, like looking at something through a thick plastic window frame.

Exactly one one them cares about instants and sorceries and it's from Conspiracy. Zero care about number of cards in hand.

Blue gets 52 cards that mention counters when they still had the color pie and used Magic players for designers. Red got 77, white 113, black 125, and green 282. Tell me again about how blue gets counters and relates them to these bullshit game properties they never once found interesting in the first 25 years of Magic.

>>
>>98555881

Views fluctuate wildly so they aren't a good measure of a channel's mainstream appeal.

There is nothing wrong with a WotC IP going on WotC cards. D&D had a Magic module, there's no reason at all that the reverse can't happen.

When you try to break Magic down too granularly people will always be able to find exceptions. Old cards had guns and robots, newer cards have cars and Sony Walkmans. So opposing UB because anything looks out of place is a dead argument, and what's worse is it's completely subjective and how you end up with retarded "approved UB" memes about LotR being okay because it "feels" right

The only distinction that will stand the test of time is whether the set is a 3rd party IP licensed to WotC. Not only is this a completely indisputable categorization, it also highlights that part of the problem with UB is a cynical cashgrab where card-space is literally being sold to other companies to advertize their shit. The Marvel sets are trying to drum up hype for their movies, the Avatar set was scheduled in literally last minute to come out just before Avatar's 20th anniversary. Other IPs are always selling something and brand awareness is inherently valuable, it's why Coca-Cola is constantly running new ads despite already being the most popular soft drink in the world and everyone knowing about it- there is value to just maintaining presence in the public consciousness. So even if you don't know what the product is, ad space is giving those IPs value.

>b-b-but Hasbro owns WotC and some of the IPs that have had crossovers so that's okay!!!
No. Companies have legal personality, 2 companies separately own the rights to things even if one company owns the other. WotC does not own the IPs Hasbro owns, and if Hasbro were to sell WotC the likelihood is they'd have to sell the IPs WotC owns along with it, or buy them from WotC's new owners before the sale.
>b-b-but muh Arabian Nights!!
Retarded bullshit. The direction designers thought the game might go 30 years ago is not relevant to what is happening to the game right now

Or we can catigorie it as wotc IP that is set within the Magic the Gathering universe, which would exclude D&D.
I honestly don't know why you'd want it included and your arguments for it are jist strange. Could EotC not quite easily make a game about their own funko pop knock offs, have the IP, then make a crossover with magic then? And that would be UW? That's incredibly dumb.
>>
>>98563780
To add to that, you can abolutely also have in-universe sets that you don't think feel right or fit, but are still in-universe. That doesn't run counter to being anti-UB, you can both dislike UB's existance as a whole and dislike certain UW sets.
>>
>>98563780
>Or we can catigorie it as wotc IP that is set within the Magic the Gathering universe, which would exclude D&D.

I fucking hate people who sit there and hold their grubby little mitts out to play with cardboard I spent my hard-earned money on. There's really obnoxious cards that will just let them search your whole deck for any card they want too. All round it feels fucking awful at the table.

The idea with the Madcap Jester is that it's chaos but the chaos is everyone is playing everyone else's shit.
What's that one card? Share the Spoils? That's an important part of it, and also using shit like Blim, Harmless Offering, Shifting Grift, Role Reversal, and Visions of Duplicity to get everyone playing someone else's shit.
By EDHREC's extremely limited theme vocabulary (I learned yesterday they don't even have "Arcane" as a theme even though there are multiple commanders that care about you casting Arcane spells) you would have to call it "Theft" but I think it's so completely unlike theft in its purpose that it is something else

Planeswalker would make sense because the whole idea was that Jace colorshifted a bunch of named characters and planeswalkers and that would be half the set if they did all of them
>>
>>98570738
capenna ob nix can make a copy of himself so maybe not
>>
>>98570866
Nah you're overthinking it. It's already possible to make token copies of any permanent. There are spells that will copy any permanent and when you copy a permanent spell the copy enters as a token.
Clearly The Vile Enemy means a TYPE of token, like Treasure, Clues, Food, etc.
>>
>>98570890
Treasure, Clue, and Food are all subtypes.
>>
>>98571153
Got sick of scrolling for the fucking link, so here, screenshot.

It says "token type" as in a type of token. We have no fucking clue what that means. Is MaRo using technical language here? You have no idea, and given the absolute shit show of Day 0 erratas on recent cards, I doubt anyone on the design team thinks in those terms.
Someone said it was almost certainly planeswalkers.
Someone else said it might not be that because there is a planeswalker that can copy itself.
I said that he's taking it too literally since you can already make a token copy of any permanent so clearly a planeswalker being able to copy itself has fucking nothing to do with it. Then I gave the example of Treasures, Clues, and Food, which- yes, are "subtypes" if you want to be a turbosperg and treat the Comprehensive Rules as your own personal bible- but would probably more commonly be referred to as "a type of token" by most people, albeit they are all artifacts.

One way or another it doesn't fucking matter because it will be planeswalkers and I don't give a shit what you reply to this post with. I'm too fucking old for these retarded semantic sperg-fights and I'll see you next month when it's planeswalker tokens
>>
>it turns out it’s a new card type entirely
>>
>>98571329
God I hope not. War of the Spark was so bad. I'm imagining all the fucking cards that will be templated to include [new permanent type] and inadvertently completely fucking bricking the card in whole or in part because the new permanent is just garbage and no one plays it

I guess I enjoy seeing that I'm one of the votes for the 3rd party, but again, the comparison doesn't work.

Battles weren’t War of the Spark.
>>
>>98570738
there's already a Jace that makes a token copy of itself
it's the one that scries 2 for +1 and draws for 0 (but he hits himself with the card)
>>
>>98574632
I think in this context copies don't count. They are copies of a permanent, not specifically a planeswalker. As anotger anon pointed out, you can make copies of every permanent.

I stopped playing the game a long time ago and when I tried to get back in I decided commander would be fine since I played it with my friends back when I was in school in the mid 2010's.

I hated it and it seems a lot of people who play MTg also don't like it. Yet I keep hearing so many good things about pauper. Doesn't it fall into the same trap of just some commons dominating the entire format? Is there enough diversity and viable strategies that you don't just end up running the same 10 cards in every fucking deck like other formats?
>>
It's my conclusion that premodern is shit. Why? Two decks in top 8 that are just gay as shit solitaire decks
>enchantress
>replenish
They run the same combo. They win the same way. The only difference is how they spam the board with enchantments for Opalescence. They only ever interact if forced to. Just solitaire until they win. But then again, every MTG deck is a solitaire deck if your opponent doesn't force you to interact. Bad design generally for a two player game.
And then there's the aggro. The two decks. Either lackey for easy combo into a turn 3-4 win or one of the most efficient burn decks in the format.
The other end is just the slowest most boring control decks to play against.
And then there's seeing JotC's mistakes when designing black. Just the ability to get an opponent to ditch their hand in the first few turns before they could do anything.
I see the truth now. MTG is shit. Absolute garbage. It always was. Premodern Brozilians like to pretend that old MTG was somehow better. It was just a broken mess in a different way. I'm going to look for another game to play.
>>98582143
Pauper just has less combo than the rest of MTG. It's especially annoying to the 15 common black cards that read something like "as an additional cost sacrifice an artifact" then "draw 2 cards." The top tier decks are pretty much just affinity or "affinity" for graveyard or some extremely power crept shit that popped up in Modern Horizons. MTG is just a bad game regardless of format.
Commander is even worse though because it's not even a game. Not two players going at it trying to win and having hopefully what resembles a "fair" game rather than who draws their combo first. It's some gay fucking social event like D&D but without the world building.
>>
>>98584004
I knew super old and new magic was shit but I wouldn't count out the whole game like mid lifetime modern (doesn't exist anymore) because it was slower. both old and new magic are too powerful to be good by definition so only the middle remains.

The middle? You mean like Scars of Mirrodin to RTR? Where you had perfectly balanced decks like Affinity? A standard that was just the fastest available aggro v. the most consistent control as in the Zendikar and Scars standard blocks were? Scars of course being the block which introduced cards like gitaxian probe. Zendikar is also notable as the design philosophy after Mirrodin's mess went away changed to one which culminated in the mess today. Even the original Ravnica was off the rails with 3/3 creatures for only 2 mana and NO drawbacks.

>Ignoring the intermediates between Alpha and 8th edition
By 4th edition much of the formatting had been cleaned up and text and parts of the cards were already far more readable. Certainly I would agree that a text bubble for the card type and card name are good additions. But cards looked more like magic cards still in 7th edition and prior. After they started to resemble more and more something like Pokemon cards.

I think playlists on YT is "&list" or something similar. "?si=" is signature, I think it appears the same on other sites like Instagram
Amazon uses "ref=" but I think most people are more wary about Amazon in the first place because for some godforsaken reason Amazon will put your fucking search terms into a URL if you opened a listing from a search, which makes the URL insanely long and noticeable when you copy and paste it

mpcfill? use the editor with a list to export the xml file and run their non-dolphinporn executable to automatically go through their process if you don't want to do it manually. idk if they approve real magic card back since their library doesn't have one but you can upload a custom pic.
