Good work, Baker San.
Not going to lie, i have painted stuff just so i could take a picture and see it end up in the mosaic.Whoever had this idea originally is a genius. Also thank you bakersan, you're always very thoughtful.

Just finished this dude from the scouts Kill Team. It was also my first time ever using regular acrylics with a wet palette instead of contrast/speedpaints (I used a couple of those as base) and it was quite fun. I didn't really bother with many highlights and it's a far cry from what is usually posted here but i'm very happy with the result and I think it already looks better than most of the stuff I've painted with speedpaints.I just gotta apply a couple of decals now but I'm gonna get some Micro Set - Micro Sol first.
>>98455572Looks good, but the spectral highlight in the foreground looks to be from a lightsouce too near to the objects for the scale. Pull it back a little and lower the ambient light a couple of notches to soften the effect of the backlighting and take the blue out of the midground overhead light. It's too cool for the background wall color.
>>98455676That looks great, look the contrast and material differencec
>>98455695It's all just lit with a single default HDRI right now. The plan when I'm ready is to dim that a bit and then light the scenes with intentional lights and keep the HDRI as a sort of baseline to add some interest to reflections.

dreadnought wip, it's looking a lil goofy but i hope the final product ends up more grotesque than goof. The idea is for the sarcophagus to be partly blown open towards the upper right, exposing the face of the marine within. Mostly so he can glare at the chaos marine, and so that I can give some more personality to the piece plus a focal point to brighten and draw the eye.
>>98458581Did some greenstuffing during work lunch today for it as well, the visible part of the face ends around 1mm below the chin so that's why the bottom is abrupt, and it'll be sunken in about 1.5mm, lit by a green glow from inside to contrast against the purple chassis.Mr chaos marine got himself some guts tooFirst major model I greenstuff for, very scary.

Over the years, we have had several posters here who produce top-quality models. They're not all necessarily the same painters as they were last year, or the year before, but there are some posters here who have been around as long or maybe even longer than I have. Before the big hack, WIP was busy enough that we were easily hitting the bump limit every 2-3 days. Once it became clear that I was going to be starting upwards of 75%-80% of our threads, I decided I didn't want to be spotlighting the same poster's models more often than once a week if I could help it.

There's nothing wrong with that and I always love seeing a nice paint job, but that's not the sort of thing you typically see on the gaming table because most people don't want to spend a year painting up a 2000 point force, particularly when the difference between golden demon level work and a contrast slop job more or less disappears from three feet away. Your paint job looks fine in the photograph (which tends to emphasize problems) and is better than it needs to be for gaming. If I could offer some minor criticism unrelated to your paint, I'd recommend drilling the barrel of the bolter. It's a 30 second operation that makes a difference. It's just their word. It's similar to cruelty-free natural brushes. There are companies who claim that, but it's just that, their claim. Truth is, 99% of natural hair is coming either from China or Russia as a byproduct of fur industry, and no matter how much the brush companies pretend (or don't bother pretending) there's a lot of fuckery (and cruelty) involved. It's why a lot of brushes, and that includes da Vinci, too, seemingly suffer from QC problems.

>>98460988No, their are laws in Germany about that sort of thing, they make the claim UNDER THOSE LAWS.even winsor/newton do not claim true kolinsky, in a market over-saturated with false attribution, that is a bonfire signal, if they do get true kolinsky it is a no-effort matter to advertise it and set themselves above the competition, that they do not is incredibly suspect. Given the cut-throat cost-cutting environment of modern business that signal is not to be ignored.Their brushes are still very good, but that does not preclude the use of synthetic/natural blends to standardize quality while relying on an old reputation. I give winsor/newton alone this benefit of doubt (while still holding them below da Vinci) because winsor newton is not publicly traded and are not subject to the demands of fiduciary responsibility to shareholders. Nonetheless, if they COULD claim true kolinsky, why not do so? Very suspicious.

I 3D printed a wet pallette. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4313777Filled it with water and left it overnight to see if it was waterproof. No leaks, so I added the sponge and parchment paper. Now it leaks.Printed it again, with more layers & perimeters. Was fine overnight, started leaking the next day when I added the sponge. Printed it again with even more layers & perimeters, at 0.1mm layer height. Same thing. Varnished it, same thing.I don't understand how adding some sponge causes it to leak when it doesn't leak otherwise.
>>98461583where does it leak from?
>>98460602The firehead is raised simply because it's closer to the light source and sngled in a way that catches light instead of brkng flat to the side of the character. The top of the head is technically the highest point of the head and usually should get moat light but hair is usually dark so we don't notice it much except with blinde hairbor bald people. Bald people have that shiny spit pointing back to the light source which is usually above and slightly to one side. But yeah finger knuckles catch more light thsn the flat of the back of the hand, the bose more than the side or front of the face, the top of the ear nore than the side of the ear, etc. The parts the stick out and catch light. >>98461611this is what happens when you just mindlessly repeat what you were told instead of observing reality. knuckles don't stand out because they "catch light," but because the skin is pulled against the bones there. it's the same with your face. the skin on your forehead is thinner than on your cheeks so it looks lighter, while your nose has more blood vessels in it so it looks darker. if you want to paint realistic looking skin you have to follow anatomy, not cargo cult lighting tips.
>>98461720Man, this drives me fucking crazy about the 3d printing 'community'. YT is full of this shit. That Slant3d channel, despite having actually good 3d printing design advice some of the time, is infuriatingly stupid. Here is every 3d printing channel's formula:>So you want to make thing that is normally injection molded?>Well you can't make it the same way, because of the limitations of 3d printing you have to change the design.>Here is how to tweak the design to make it practical to print and still function!(I'm on board up until this point)>See, this design you CAN'T EVEN MAKE any other way! This is why 3d printing is superior and you should use our 3d printing farms to mass produce worthless widgets that aren't actually good products!>Ignore that the 'impossible to manufacture' 3d printed version only exists in the inefficient, uses-way-too-much-material, takes 1+ hour to print, form it does to get around the fact that the well engineered injection molded version doesn't work when 3d printed in the first place.I love my 3d printer. It's great. But 80% of the 3d printing people do is just re-inventing worse solutions for shit that was already solved and pretending like it's better. It's better because maybe you can have it on the fly for rapid prototyping and SOMETIMES when people actually care it's actually the best or only way to make things. But instead most of the time it's just like>I want to dig a hole>I could use a shovel>Or I could use a spoon>Yeah, you can't take as big a scoop with a spoon, but I have a solution! Invite 30 friends over and each of them with a spoon will help dig the hole!>And you know what? A shovel doesn't give you quality time with your friends the way the spoon plan would, so actually spoons are the better option.>t. spoon manufacturerI feel retarded for typing that analogy out, but this shit really irritates me.
When it comes to edge highlighting, what is normally your idea? I almost never do edge highlighting because it seems odd to me to highlight every edge which seems common. I don't think it looks bad but if the idea is intensify areas that the light hits, why would say underneath a model or in a crevice be highlighted? I guess it just depends on what you are going for?
>>98461765You can always highlight only the edges that face upwards, it will give you a slightly more realistic look. Then again, in this case highlighting every edge on his weapon will look good.
>>98461765i like edge highlighting every edge. im not replicating how light hits the model, im making it nice for the table. highlights pick up detail, brighten the mini for regular view. itll be under light anyways for that. I realise this isn't going to be the prettiest mini in the world, my focus is always to have them look real nice and readable for the table.
Are the John Blanche Masterclass series paints worth picking up? I'm leaning towards the cool palette one in particular. Also any tips or tools necessary for greenstuff? I am going to snip off the flags off the back of this "Path of Command Autarch" and wanted to model a fur pelt/cape off the back, pic related.
>>98461963Depends on the paints you already have. If you've been around a while chances are you don't really need the colors it comes with to accomplish the same color palette.Especially given it's a limited palette that relies on mixing, so the argument of 'well they're the exact right colors' kind of goes out the window.

Was considering picking up some new brushes. I don't want to get Temu cheap but I also don't want to buy gucci tier Thai hair silk brushes or some bullshit. What is a good mid range brush?
>>98462063There's imo no reason in getting hanged up on just one brand. I personally prefer AK, because of how consistent it is, but their metallics are just mid. AP probably makes the best washes, but I strongly dislike nearly everything else. I luv multiple Vallejo colors I have (mostly Model Color), but I also have some that are just garbage. >>98462606real weasel and "red male siberian weasel from the tobol region, tail of the winter coat" is an order of magnitude of specific separation, the species alone is not sufficient, it is a combination of the daylight hours through winter in that region, the low temperatures in that region AND the local diet in that region, replicating the temperature and daylight would be simple enough but the exact nature of the local diet is unique and that is why that very specific limited range of that species has been established as the premium brush material.red siberian weasels do exist elsewhere, even in china, but that's a lot further south (so the winter coats don't get as thick and dense) and they do not have the same diet (so the sebaceous lipids involved in hair formation and maintenance are different).

>>98463767>because of the thickness of the gates>SPN120s are too fragile and the extra sharpness isn't worth itah sweet a new larp just dropped
>>98463798This is common knowledge. SPN120s are known for their fragility. They're also entirely unnecessary for Warhammer models, since their main selling point is the fact they leave very little gate mark, which doesn't matter if you're going to paint the model anyways. You are painting your minis, right, anon?
>>98463803>which doesn't matter if you're going to paint the model anywaysit still significantly reduces the cleanup time since you can cut as flush to the part as the geometry allows you to without worrying about leaving any gouges or stress marks on the part itselfwhile pn-120s are advertised as having a supposedly sturdier blade, they are rated for the same max thickness of soft plastics as spn-120s at 3mm
>>98463826The max thickness is due to how wide the blades open, so you cut with the centre of the cutting edge. The steel they use for the PN120s is softer, and therefore less sharp but more durable.
>>98463840>The max thickness is due to how wide the blades open, so you cut with the centre of the cutting edge"no"the blades open for like 8-9mm at their ends, farthest away from the hinge and ~7mm at the centera 3mm part can fit all the way down between the blades until it reaches the hinge, the limit is literally there to minimize the risk of breaking them
