So you posted slop. Congratulations? My point is that centaurs have consistently been in green, with extensions into white on Theros and Ravnica and, less often, into red also mainly on Ravnica.
Meanwhile Satyrs have been exclusively green and red, with the issue being that they’re more than just what we’ve seen- they’re culturally also fauns and fae in a way that centaurs never categorically all. A satyr teaching in a school or in civilization makes no sense, and despite their pranks being black doesn’t fit them (they’re not malicious enough), and so being tertiary in blue fits the cultural trope of satyrs rather than just ‘elemental man’.

>I really hope in the long term he has the chance to eat his own words.
I know it reads like copium but I really feel like it's inevitable, even if it will take a decade or better. They're literally building their current model on being unsustainable, deliberately focusing on people that trickle in and out and telling their core audience to piss off. That kind of thing never works out in the long run. I doubt they'll ever shutter but I firmly believe you're eventually gonna see MTG become a distant third to pokemon and yugioh or maybe even fourth if one of those other games like I dunno FaB or One Piece manage to get enough of a hold.

Make it so that it can't do whatever it was it was trying to do.
>Remove target attacking or blocking creature from combat. Untap it. Until end of turn it becomes a doctor. You gain 2 life.
A more faithful version might be something like 'counter target activated ability from a creature source, untap that creature, it becomes a doctor' but that seems somewhat too niche and clunky.
>>
>>98465736
>new rules change on mana abilities
Fuck sake. What a completely unnecessary change that the majority of players won't understand. This will literally only benefit angle shooters and I'm positive that cards that were intended to double activated abilities that were not mana abilities will interact in some unforseen and broken way somewhere.

Hello fellow chuds. With the upcoming Ban and Restricted announcement on the 10th, I thought I'd go over some of the cards on the list that could be options to unban.

In recent years, WotC has done a pretty good job on managing the ban list in Modern, one of the few bright points in recent years. Not only that but they've taken very bold action with unbanning very powerful cards like Outburst, Opal and Looting. With that in mind, let's get started at the top with lower power level cards and work our way up.

Bad -
Blazing Shoal
Everything Infect wants to do is already done better by Prowess. And Shoal pollutes your deck with uncastable red cards, making a bad deck even worse.

Punishing Fire
Broodscale plays Grove and Rumble and even that deck would probably rather play Unholy Heat than PFire. Maybe there is something there but it's really doesn't line up very well against most decks in the format.

Birthing Pod
Birthing Ritual does it (mostly) better and isn't vulnerable to Needle and make you lose a ton of life and is just cheaper overall. Yes, you can combo with specific cards but it does it so slowly and so costly that it's not worth playing. Playing a bunch of bricks like Kiki-Jiki that suck when you draw them is a real cost too. Another problem Birthing Ritual decks lack.

Mediocre -
Artifact Lands
Seat of the Synod and company aren't weak cards but they line up very poorly in Modern at the moment. In effect you get slightly better game 1's but at the cost of losing even harder to Wrath effects. Another hidden cost of these cards is that Affinity runs quite a few dual lands: including artifact lands will increase inconsistency as well. One of the upsides though is that artifact lands could enable different builds of Affinity to exist, maybe. Certainly having all your permanents being Ravager food is pretty enticing.

Bridge from Below
Banned to nerf Hogaak, this card has been popular in the past as a fun brew around card and never really that spooky, in Modern at least. Easy unban.

Glimpse of Nature
Weak card that is only good in Elves and Cheerios and only one of those decks was actually good in the past. Ironically, Glimpse wouldn't even be played now because Cantankerous Keepers is a solid beater and doesn't fold over hard to Orcish Bowmasters.

Hypergenesis
Just a worse Living End. The deck is very inconsistent and Living End can easily put 20+ power into the GY and untap and kill you while being very consistent. Oh, and it's symmetrical. I've beat more than a few Hypergenesis players in Legacy by just dumping my hand and then killing them first.

Deathrite Shaman
DRS is one best unbans because it would actually see play but also improve the metagame. It's a powerful card but it's effects are modest. Compared to a post-FIRE Modern, it is a humble card. It's not even the best one drop; it's behind Guide, Pride, Ragavan and Halfling. Maybe even Tamiyo too. It's not going to police GY very heavily as claimed by some proponents, it's too slow and vulnerable to removal for that but it does some amount of GY hating. And another surprising interaction is that DRS does NOT work with Badgermole Cub due to the way it's first ability is templated. Another strike against it being ubiquitous in Green decks. I actually quite like the card in Elves with the nice boost that deck will get with Cantankerous Keepers from the Hobbit set. DRS can actually machine gun people down pretty quickly with support from Wirewood Symbiote. That was a pretty sweet interaction in Legacy Elves back in grandpa's time.

Field of the Dead
Good in Titan. Good in durdly Omnath decks. Not really good anywhere else. Field doesn't solve the problems with those decks but it does help them and the card is very slow to get online. Not problematic but good enough to see a little play.

Golgari Grave-Troll
Dredge is bad and the format isn't even slamming 4 RIP or Leyline in their boards. Not a good sign. Let people sleeve up the deck if they want. I'm not going to cry if it's becomes a playable deck and I maybe have to play 1 or 2 more hate cards.

Krark-Clan Ironworks
Another powerful card from Modern's recent past that also lines up very poorly against the current suite of interaction and the speed of the format in general. Bad vs all the things Affinity is in addition to GY hate.

Mycosynth Lattice
It's good in Eldrazi Tron. A strong deck and Lattice ends the game immediately instead of dragging things on forever which I like. But it's hard to resolve Lattice in the first place, much less also keep Karn on board.
>>
>>98466631
Magic never stopped doing this. The next set is literally the nothingburger climax to all the B plot bullshit and it's likely the only "change" will be a return to status quo with Eldrazi and Phyrexians also escaping their permanent defeats for the second time (Bolas is on his third escape from permanent defeat)

Very Good -

Dig Through Time

Dig is a very, very strong card. It's still borderline broken. But the decks that can best abuse Dig in Modern are the durdly control decks that could use a little more help. Sometimes your answers don't line up with their threats or you're unable to find a wincon in time before your opponent closes the game out with a lone creature. It helps those decks close the game faster with Chant lock, Narset + Days, Solitude, etc. which is certainly a good thing too.

Ponder

This could maybe be too much when paired with Dig so it might have to only be one or the other unbanned at the outset. I prefer Ponder desu even though I think it's the better card. It enables tempo decks which is generally a good thing. The bad is that it can enable decks like Neoform. Not a good thing. This one is more borderline.

There are a few more cards you could consider based on purely power level, like Oko is actually worse than Uro imo and could maybe be unbanned now which seems crazy but then you remember Consign is a hell of a drug. I'd much rather get the chaff on the list, like Shoal, and some of the stronger cards before moving on to something like Oko which was miserable 6 years ago but is "fine" now.

There are also a few super powerful cards that could potentially come off, namely Dark Depths. But, as above, I'd want to wait and see how the meta shakes out. There are a lot of tools to fight it but whether that would be enough to unban it is uncertain.
>>
>>98466002
You gotta wonder if they even understand why FF took off so well, or if they think they're just rolling the dice.
They literally just have to pick a theme that meshes well with UW, and give cards interesting mechanics that aren't reliant on building your deck completely around that set.
Spiderman: Incorrect theming, cards are just plain boring and weak
Turtles: Incorrect theming, cards are strong but boring
Marvel: Incorrect theming, boring cards
Fallout: Incorrect theming, only interesting cards rely on set mechanics
Avatar: Decent theming but mismatched artstyle, only interesting cards rely on set mechanics
FF: Great theming (same magic/tech mix as UW), full of unusual cards that fill a lot of niches in non-FF decks

I don't mind having the discussion but there is 0% chance we get any unbans next monday, they just unbanned two cards 3 months ago, the last round of unbans before that happened at the end of 2024 specifically because they wanted to shake up the meta, they're not going to unban any cards for at least another year.

That all being said, I think the next cards to get unbanned are Glimpse of Nature and Mystic Sanctuary, both of them are exciting for archtypes that have long stopped being something to worry about in Modern, much like Jitte or Twin.

Thank you for the reply anon.

That said, the last unbans did basically nothing other than increase Living End's share of the meta a little bit. Glimpse would be a good unban because it's weak. Sanctuary was for the spamming of Cryptic with Uro and such. I left Sanctuary off because it's basically free in a lot of blue decks and I haven't thought too deeply about it. Cryptic Command is a non-factor in Modern but I think there might be something there but it is a good candidate to unban, I think.
>>
the little thing that really gets my goat with UB vs UW is this

They will make massive changes to the game for "readability" or "streamlining" or "it just makes sense"

shit like cutting out old monster tribes and merging them together so that homarids are gonna be lobsters now

and then they will also bend those same rules or make things more complex or print wordier, uglier rules text for UB cards because "it makes the fans of that IP happy" read: the deal says they get to make demands like adding so many specific tribes that will never matter outside of one UB set.

It's the double fucking standards where UB gets to shit on the game while UW gets shat on.

>That said, the last unbans did basically nothing other than increase Living End's share of the meta a little bit.
I am aware, I did not mean to imply that they wouldn't do more unbans because the last ones were too impactful, I'm referencing their conservative track record of unbanning only a few cards over long periods of time and only doing so when they wanted make specific changes to the meta. In other words, the last round of unbans is still too recent and they aren't unhappy with the resulting meta being energy in tier 1 and a bunch of other tier 1.5 decks orbiting around it.
>Glimpse would be a good unban because it's weak.
Yes, that is my point, it would be a safe unban that would appeal to whatever Elves players managed to stick around at the fringes after all these years, much like when Twin got unbanned and a reasonable amount of people dediced to pick it up again even if it wasn't actually very competitive at the end of the day.
>I left Sanctuary off because it's basically free in a lot of blue decks and I haven't thought too deeply about it.
You'd basically see it as a 1-of in a lot of blue decks, the deckbuilding cost to run more than 1 copy is pretty harsh unless you're playing mono blue or only splashing a second color. I think it's one big but reasonable way you can make more people feel like playing non-energy decks.
>>

I know anon. With the Opal and Looting unbans and then the Outburst unban even more recently, that they would have a better idea of what is OK and not OK in the format which is why I have higher expectations of unbans.
>Glimpse
Basically no cost to unban
>Sanctuary
Slightly more problematic for unbanning but probably not an issue. The card is rather free. I think there are already a lot of reasons to play decks that aren't Energy so I don't think this really moves the needle that much. But I generally agree that it is unbannable.

Does Walmart just not carry MTG any more? When I played last 6~ years ago it was a good place to pick up precons and bundles, could usually get something like a 2 year old edh precon for 50% off. Now getting back in to the game, they have literally nothing.

Shame. Was hoping to pick up some of the Lorwyn, Dragonstorm or Fallout stuff because they look good and fun, but my LGS is either out of stock or grossly overpriced. Even current shit like Marvel is over priced there.
>But Commander and UB are as popular as ever.
I definitely got that vibe, when I last played UB was just starting with secret lairs and commander was becoming more mainstream and attracting the normies. My local store no longer holds modern nights, which was my old go to. I got the random itch to play again and my choice was basically draft or commander. Wanted to pick up a commander deck to smash some of my draft cards in to.

Also is it just me or is commander like... Weirdly competitive now? Before it was literally just "here's a pile of random cards I happen to own" now people are ordering decklists for that shit.

>infamous blind spot in the rules
You're a dumb nigger.
People have more problems understanding mana abilities than they do understanding the few edge cases where mana abilities also draw you a card. Deathrite Shaman is an example of a bad blind spot because a lot of people thought it WAS a mana ability and didn't realize you can respond to it.

Trying to explain to a player that you can't respond to an Elves of Deep Shadow but you can respond to a Millikin is a hassle and appears extremely unintuitive to new or casual players who barely understand what a mana ability is. The biggest issue is going to be when some bullshit synergy that allows you to copy activated abilities shows up and little Timmy doesn't understand why Spike copied his chromatic sphere but he wasn't allowed to copy his Llanowar Elves.

Treasure Cruise was played in mono red burn when it was legal. With how free manabases are in Modern through even 'just' shocks + fetches, UU is not a real drawback.
Dig would be played by every deck that fills its graveyard and would not be best abused by durdly control decks. It would either be some graveyard related combo slop or it would be the most recent iteration of Delver/Murktide.

>Also is it just me or is commander like... Weirdly competitive now?
I haven't played since 2013. From what I've seen at my LGS it's a weird mix of sweaty tryhards, someone who slapped together 99 cards they own, and unchanged precons. I think the vocaroo sums it up pretty well, it's a multiplayer game so anything can happen and supposedly anyone can win. CEDH is a joke because people work out alliances before the tournaments and give each other draws. People often win around turn 4-5 so it's not even a casual game anymore.

I play my own cubes and dandan mostly now, and then that's maybe quarterly. I buy secret lairs I like. I'm planning to get the Miku Secret Lair for the memes. It's print to demand for 24 hours.
>>
>>98467407

The only format where Wurm+Selvala interaction is relevant is Judge's Tower.
In casual games nobody cares about rules about mana abilities so much. Either the table allows take backsies or not.
In competitive formats like tourneys and championships there are judges who make you play the game instead of wasting their time.
Similarly Four Horsemen deck was competitively banned despite not breaking any rules in the Comprehensive Rules document, but because it breaks the slow play tournament rule.
>>
>>98467500
Selvala + Wurm isn't slow play just because the rules don't cover what happens.

>Uh it's not a gap in the rules if I just pretend it doesn't matter
That's literally why the rule got changed. Unless you think players are miraculously too retarded to understand how picrel works but would somehow intuit how Millikin works when casting the top card of your library.
>>
>>98467508
I'm not sure what the hangup is? It looks like there was a ruling in 2014 that explains pretty well what happens if Selvala fails to produce enough mana:

>If you activate Selvala's ability while casting a spell, and you discover you can't produce enough mana to pay that spell's costs, the spell is reversed. The spell returns to whatever zone you were casting it from. You may reverse other mana abilities you activated while casting the spell, but Selvala's ability can't be reversed. You'll still have whatever mana that ability produced, and each player will have drawn a card.

Also, you don't get to play games with the order of your library while searching, according to a ruling on Panglacial Wurm.

>While searching your library, you must keep your library in the same order until you shuffle it. This order could matter if you tap Millikin for mana, for example, to pay for a Panglacial Wurm you cast from your library.

Putting it all together, something happened that let you search your library. While searching, you also found your Panglacial Wurm. You can attempt to generate mana with Selvala. If there isn't enough mana between the top cards of your library and your opponent's library, the Wurm goes back into your deck, you have whatever mana generated and whatever life gained, then you and everyone else draws the top card of your deck. Then you finish whatever search you were performing, and almost certainly shuffle your deck.
>>
>>98467582
It's cheating to intentionally failcast the wurm.
>>
>>98467582
Result: Panglacial Wurm allowed you to view the top card of your library and decide to draw it before you shuffle while tutoring.
>>
>>98467586
I assume there is something more to board state you're not sharing with us then? It looks like the ruling takes into account the fact that her ability is somewhat random, and made a reasonable decision about how to handle it.
>>
>>98467591
Yeah. Combos are fun. It'd be kind of like if you had some other card that let you play with the top card of your deck revealed, then tapped Selvala for her ability.
>>

>>
>>98467599
That's also not how the card, or the game, works. Before or after the change. Otherwise it wouldn't have been an example of a gap in the rules that merited a change in defining what a mana ability is.
>>
>>98467592
I wasn't the previous anons, just pointing out that it's considered cheating to intentionally failcast the wurm. The rules don't break down, the situation is resolved mechanically.
>>
>>98467619
How so?
>>
>>98467615
That's literally how the game worked, before the change. It's in black and white on the Gatherer page for Selvala. Or are you saying that there are additional rulings, hidden somewhere else that are more current?

I suppose with the rules update, you couldn't activate her ability during the search. So you wouldn't be able to use it to cast the Wurm.
>>
>>98467591
Okay. Indicate how and why that is a problem? It seems like following the rules of the game caused in-game actions to occur.
>>98467615
>THE WAY THE GAME WORKED BEFORE THE CHANGE (with pertinent rulings shown to you) IS NOT HOW THE GAME WORKED BEFORE THE CHANGE
You are delusional and retarded.
>merited a change in defining what a mana ability is
It didn't merit a change. That's my entire point. You are arguing based on the axiom that the change was necessary and because I obviously disagree with that axiom, using it to justify the change is circular reasoning that is obviously not going to convince me of anything other than your own inherent retardation.

I'm looking for some feedback mostly about the sideboard for this mono black 'tempo' list for Legacy. I only play in paper at my LGS.
Main deck flex slots are Urza's Bauble, Mai and Stalker.
Sideboard mapping is something like this; because it's a local meta I can be a bit more targeted, for example noone plays fast graveyard combo or dredge so I can skip Leyline, Faerie Macabre etc.

Ashen Rider - Any S&T
Damping Sphere - Tronpost, Storm, Mystic Forge
Flute - Tronpost, Welder, Doomsday, Lands
Fatal Push - Any creature matchup
Force of Despair - Any creature matchup where Fatal Push isn't enough, such as Eldrazi
Inquisition - Any combo matchup
Edict - Flexible, mostly intended for UB tempo or Depths decks
Surgical - Welder, Lands, Doomsday

The most common decks to show up are Lands, Welder/Painter, Doomsday, Tron/Cloudpost, and UB/UR Tempo. One thing I've been unable to figure out is if I want 3 Dark Ritual or 4. It's best when it's in my opening hand and I never see a second one so there's a bit of tension between the two. I think the deck can operate fine without having it in my opener, but it can make certain matchups easier if it is. I'm also unsure if the Ashen Rider slots would be better spent on Barrowgoyf #3 and something else. Most lists like this have Mai in the sideboard.
>>
>>98467778
I think it's fine the rules got changed. That doesn't mean that under the previous rules intentionally failcasting the wurm isn't cheating. Simply falls under performing an illegal action for advantage, which is cheating. Proving it is unnecessary. Cope, seethe, dilate etc.

Wurm + Selvala interaction is possible in EDH (especially with Selvala as commander) but also Legacy and Vintage.
Tournament rules can be found here
https://media.wizards.com/ContentResources/WPN/MTG_MTR_2026_Feb27_EN.pdf
Section 5.5 Slow Play gives no reason to believe a slow play penalty would be given from Wurm + Selvala interaction.
Four Horsemen gives a slow play because 1. You can't give a final state after a certain number of iterations and 2. a board state is repeated without meaningful progress being made. Neither of these apply to the Wurm + Selvala interaction
Magic comprehensive rules can be found here
https://media.wizards.com/2026/downloads/MagicCompRules%2020260807.pdf
The relevant section is 601 - Casting Spells
The Wurm + Selvala interaction is deep rules, notably a spell is "proposed" before actually being cast, in which the spell is moved to the stack and mana abilities are paid. Wurm reveals library order information and Selvala is a mana ability used to pay the Wurm cost, which draws a card as part of the resolution of the mana ability. The spell proposal then fails as there is not enough mana, and the rest of the search/shuffle effect happens. This rule is covered by
>601.2e The game checks to see if the proposed spell can legally be cast. If the proposed spell is
illegal, the game returns to the moment before the casting of that spell was proposed (see rule
733, “Handling Illegal Actions”).
>Each player may also reverse any legal mana abilities that player activated while
making the illegal play, unless mana from those abilities or from any triggered mana abilities they
caused to trigger was spent on another mana ability that wasn’t reversed. Players may not reverse
actions that moved cards to a library, moved cards from a library to any zone other than the stack,
caused a library to be shuffled, or caused cards from a library to be revealed.
>>
>>98467962
The interaction between Wurm + Selvala was covered by the comprehensive rules, it was however a pain in the ass to explain and even seasoned players would get it wrong as we see in this thread.
There is nothing in the tournament rules to suggest that Wurm + Selvala is a slow play, warning, game loss, or match loss from a judge.
If you are a tournament player, you should read the entire comprehensive rules and tournament rules. I highly suggest it, as it will allow you to improve your own gameplay and stay vigilant with opponents.
As always, anytime Wizards does some meddling it is because of something new coming out. Keep your eyes peeled for something really fucking retarded in the next 1-6 months (besides posters in /mtg/ of course)

KCI isn't SDT. It's not even close. It's more like Twin in that it's an old combo deck well past it's prime. You don't have time to try and draw out the game with slow non-deterministic kills when you're just dead.

>>98467396
Right but I'm not advocating for Cruise. Big difference between it and Dig. Secondly, Dig isn't easy to slot into many of the midrange blue decks because it competes with a limited resource these decks are trying to exploit already i.e. the graveyard. Goryos already wants to fly Frog and reanimate Atraxa. Same for any Murktide midrange decks. EI is already a rather awkward card in Prowess and Dig is that but many times over. Neobrand isn't filling up it's GY fast enough for it to be too concerning. It's not going to mitigate how fragile the combo is. What other combo deck would push Dig over the top because I can't really think of any?

Not really, it was used because there was nothing else besides Rakdos Cackler and its biggest benefit was being able to push through a Sylvan Caryatid but RTR-THE-KTR was a very grim time for monored.

Well, if you direct your attention to section 8 of the comprehensive rules you will notice that Magic: The Gathering supports game modes with more than two players. This is unironically the new business plan. Instead of pleasing one small group with all of your releases, release 6 sets a year that target different customer bases.
Those bases will spend the same, just saving it all up for their specific targeted release.

UW recruit is actually disgusting, tons of card draw, tons of tokens, tons of fliers, the best removal, just has it all to succeed in limited

RW dwarves are a great archetype but a tad weak to removal if you stop them from getting storied

UG elves are meh, okayish tribal payoffs but nothing too crazy unless you draft those huge hexproof bears

RB goblins are meh, run of the mill aggro deck, nothing too crazy there and the "bombs" are few and far between

GB ferocious is shit don't even bother trying

I enjoyed my prerelease. I had hoped to go BG and got the support to do so, which was nice. Most of the power in my deck was in the uncommons, which I think is a pretty good thing for a set. I haven’t played in a while but I do have some vague idea of the problem cards people are angry about in standard and one thing just left me feeling pissed off
>okay so badgermole cub makes creatures that tap for mana tap for 1 more mana, that’s obviously busted
>and it turns a land into a creature with haste so it can tap for an extra mana too
>but that means you can blow up their land more easily and put them back as a drawb-
>>the mechanic is worded to make it so that removal just causes it to return to play as an ordinary land, even if you pointed exile based removal at it
>even if it was explicitly land based removal
>>>this was a major set mechanic
So you can hypothetically play badgermole cub, turn your Gaea’s Cradle into a creature, and now your opponent needs two wastelands or a wasteland + a removal spell to blow it up properly (or a way to bounce it back to hand, I guess)
And also the cradle taps for one more mana too because that’s what Gaea’s Cradle needed to do

Like old cards that turned lands into creatures sometimes had a failsafe, like the Zendikons from Worldwake returning the land to your hand if it went to the graveyard, but that still meant you were temporarily (at least) behind on land drops
What the fuck
