>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance,
Gaslands, HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends,
Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam,
SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

Shill for an alternative wargame you play but is never mentioned in /awg/.
>>
Would.

I like Void Admiral.
Simple enough space fleet game, but not too simple.
You do not get the build your own fleet kind of thing but general concept of fleets like space elves, not cylons, startrek federation, etc that you can then equip and build as you see fit.
Spam is controlled by each ship of the same class needing to have a different loadout from each other. So you can't really spam a single ship/weapon type.
Has some campaign features and even had a way to convert the game into hexes.
There is a second edition coming that is fixing the random stuff that didn't work too well

>Shill for an alternative wargame you play but is never mentioned in /awg/.
It gets mentioned sometimes, mostly by me. But I'm really digging Wanted! Reward: 10,000cc

It's pretty rules light, there's basically only one Fixed stat for characters. It fits a nice place for me where it hits that overlap between RPG and wargame. It's goofy and doesn't take itself too seriously. It works will for both group play and solo if you're into that sort of things.

It definitely benefits from having a GM, but I'm honestly of the opinion that most games do.

Rules are free too. https://poodong.boards.net/

What's the game? it looks to me like my 3D prints for a certain non-awg will fit nicely considering the police faction is judge dredd sculpts.
interested because that non-awg just got a shiny new thing release leaked and everyone and their hamplanet is going to switch like good corpo-cultists, playing a totally different (not) game will be easier than trying to stick to the the rules we've been playing forever =/

Judge Dredd The Miniatures Game, produced and published by Warlord Games and now OoP. The Starter, I am the Law, can still be found online and so can some expansions, it's a lot of fun but it's becoming vanishingly more rare with each passing day.

The Reaper "dregs" were partly sculpted by the same guy, IIRC, and they work well with the Ghoul King. Second link is a store I use a lot that appears to still have stock of the metal castings, which are a lot nicer than the Siocast ones. If you go for the metals, I suggest calling them up first to make sure the Ghouls are actually in stock. Heresy tends to be really slow to ship special orders to retail and their metal molds for the ghouls are trashed right now.

Heads up - they only have a couple of poses on the sprue and limited heads/hands. Getting a sprue or two off the Frostgrave Undead Encounters Pack is fine, but if you're trying for 10 of them in a skirmish they're kinda gonna look like ass together.
The Undead Encounters pack really is a fantastic deal, though - one Small Construct, 4 Ghouls, 3 Zombies, 10 Skeletons, and a couple things bursting out of the ground for around $20, and it's available on a whole bunch of third-party sites

>>98465569
Eh, some people like having the starters and nicely-printed physical stuff. I own the OG Shock Force rulebooks for a reason. That said, it really doesn't help Warlord's case that almost all of their smaller-scale games are catastrophically overpriced and frequently pretty weak sculpts. Judge Dredd included. I'm not paying $80 for 8 models, even the Heresy ghouls are stretching it for me and those are much nicer models.
>>
With the new Oathmark rules releasing this month(?) are they rolling all the additional rulesets into that one rulebook? Like the undead and things like javelins being part of one compendium instead of across multiple?

Also they showed some of the new effects of races and units
>elves get the racial effect "eldest"
> -1 to magic attacks against you and does not suffer morale rolls from other races being routed. Also reduced the cost of all elf units, which is fucking wild
>humans get the effect "hasty"
>when failing to move, they can instead always move up to 3 inches
>orcs
>nerfed their linebreakers and increased their cost, now orcs have the same stats as humans, but also cost more for some reason? I dont understand this change. Seems the developer thinks wild charge is overpowered for some reason when its completely invalidated by spears and the orcs inability to activate consistently
>a new effect that applies to lesser units of most races "expected to flee"
>if that unit routs it does not affect other units morale, now goblins and militia are useful and dont cause cascading routing.

I hope theres more going on but it seems like elves are way overpowered and orcs are worthless.

Third game of XCOM done, this marks the end of the scripted easy onboarding tutorial part of the campaign. Shit's gonna get real now.

Combat Patrol forced to feature Thin Men, I may have fucked up a bit by having the Spawn Points a little too exposed. More than a couple of times a Thin Man would spawn, attempt to move, and then get Overwatched down.
I think I got halfway through the scenario before they even got a shot off. Although some of that is because my team has gone from 4 rookies to an Assault who routinely solo's half the enemy aliens, two Heavies, one who can shoot, and the other who isn't even getting a nickname because he's 100% MEC Trooper fodder, a SHIV and two Rookies.

The only thing on my side to take a hit was said SHIV, and luckily too, as a single shot stripped the armour clean off, but my tiny tonk survived otherwise undamage. Poison is annoying and I need to remember when it happens. But otherwise, it was fine.

One guy is now a Sniper, the rest of my team continue to level up their stats. I picked up some extra science and Alien scrap which I managed to leverage into completing another Research Topic in a single turn, and then further had the Engineering bay churn out the first two Carapace suits for my Assault and her Meat Shield Rookie (I'd like a Support to round the squad out, and so I have someone who can Stun aliens and move the plot along without losing the Grenade at some point too.)

Next mission? Another UFO crash site.
>>
>>98466243
How the the straight rules?
i think i'd rather play the rules/pirate than pick up the physically minis.
they chose the aesthetically worst real xcom.
fuck if it's good maybe we'll get some homebrew for XPirates, TFTD, Phoenix Point and XCOM-Files going
>>
>>98466268

Oh there's tons of stuff you can use for proxies. The 7TV guys have some stuff that works really well for a start.
As for the rules. I think they work fine... but I feel like maybe the PDF needed another playtesting pass for editing? Like things aren't as well written as they could be. Some aliens have abilities that reference things that aren't how the game works any more, and the Cyberdisc's armour stat is just straight up wrong. But, that's really the only problems.
It's no worse than say, your average 2 Fat Lardies game. You can work through it, but... maybe worth a pirate at some point.

I'll try again

3 questions for you awg anons.

1) how's the new edition of KoW? I remember paying a bit when its second edition came out and quite liking the game. I enjoy crunchy wargames but KOW was a welcome lighter departure and easier to play in an afternoon. I just found out there's now a 4th edition.

2) slaughterloo. I love the idea (and even more I love the idea of fielding hundreds of musket and rifle wielding dwarfs). But online I can find very little about it. I'd like to know before dropping £30+ shipping on a game that I'll probably never find opponents for.

3) dwarf wars. I love their range of dedicated miniatures, but I can find even less info about this game. Anyone can tell me anything about it?

Hey that sounds fun. Holy shit what is this cancer font + size? I am looking at it on a wide monitor with 130% zoom and the number 4 doesn't even separate the branches. On the archetypes list the number 8 looks fuzzy enough to be mistaken for a 3. If this was printed out on a4 paper it would be illegible. It does look fun, even has space minivan combat. How is this 10 mb? Is the front picture that heavy? Please, as one anon to another tell me the truth. Is the PDF just a delivery vehicle for some digital living off the land attack?

With a shrug and a "It's all right, I guess" you just play as the aliens yourself without using the AI. There's a points buy system for everything to keep stuff balanced If you going for a multiplayer mode style match.

>>98466421
Of what? The models aren't out yet, and even if they were they cost way too much, well beyond the realms of common sense. I'm literally just using proxies, mostly just SW Legion rebels for the troopers and whatever else I can find for the aliens (40k Genecult for Sectoids, modern Delaques for Thin Men, and K2SO from Legion for an Outsider. if you must know) Terrain is books due for the charity shop stacked over each other. I'm using my XWing tokens to do the token lifting. It's a cludge and I'm not taking photo's of it.

Maybe if I get some proper models off Etsy for it. But I'll see if it keeps my attention beyond the first month at least before doing that.

>Shill for an alternative wargame you play but is never mentioned in /awg/.

I'm a pretty basic bitch mayne but I saw the TQ and thought I'd go over stuff I have, stuff I've played and stuff I want to try...just to pass some time

Played
4 Against Darkness
Heroquest
Frostgrave
Hail Caesar
Hordes of the Things

Have
Most of the above
Most of the Ganesha games
Most DBX games
Most ot the Osprey Skirmish games (not the blue books so much)
Some of Nic Wright's games
5 Parsecs

Want to try
Alien squad leader
Rogue Planet

Only games that I didn't get on with yet are Lardies... some of the Blue Books need improving... but not a bad intro... I didn't like Fistful of Lead much either but that doesn't mean they suck, it's just whether it clicks for you or not really.

If I want some super crunch I go over to hex and counter. But I'm usually happy playing dumb skirmish games in 15mm on my own. I just like painting dinky things, I like the coffee table battlefield. Totally get why something like DBA is anathema to someone who wants a huge lush table with massive armies tho.

Small scale and format just means I can try a lot of things super cheap and my painting looks more impressive than it really is. Super fucking hard to get anyone else to give a shit tho lol...you are probs on your own if you aren't doing one of the big box games...I just can't get into them. Takes me too long and costs too much to finish a project with even 2-3 small forces. And then terrain...
>>
>>98467442
Historicals totally need demystifying I reckon. When you actually get into them
>it's cheap enough to do 2 or more eras
>there is no meta
>hwgers are usually helpful (bit nuts here but whaddyado)
>minis agnostic
>if you wanna go super autist you can, if not there are always osprey books and YT documentaries for "lore"
>the "lore" is always wilder than any fiction...it always subverts your expectations and you begin to understand the perspectives of each nation...super heroic and unlikely things happen in war when you're not just eating spam in a muddy hole
>the uniform thing has a lot more variation when you look up colour plates, but also campaigns and wear and tear give a bit of latitude, so do ImagiNations - like Ruritania vs Moldavia
>humans from most eras do good double duty fantasy guys anyway
>keeping your cultures snd history alive...

I like fantasy a lot tho. And I like sci fi that is a bit blurry with fantasy

Because it makes sense giving the context of the time. In BA melee essentially only happens when a unit storms into an occupied building or trench, and melee in that scenario would realistically only last a couples seconds. The all or nothing approach is nice, it would be so retarded if it was multiple turns of rolling off like a Warhammer session

what's the deal with Dropzone and Dropfleet nowadays? they used to be really popular, and now I see that Dropzone just got a third edition recently but no one really seems to care?
>>
>>98467939
Hawk was about to go bankrupt chasing licenses and frittering away their cash. A terrain company bought them out and chained the sculptor/owner in their basement as a product extruder. The most recent edition of Dropfleet and Dropzone have made some very controversial changes (especially Dropfleet) and driven off a bunch of people. Also they're not doing as much organized play these days, which tends to draw less discussion. FWIW I'm in a lot of the Battlefleet Gothic community spaces and there's been a huge influx of people over the last year, it seems to be drawing down other space games. God willing GW won't take the bait.
>>
>>98467968

You've conflated Hawk and Spartan. Which is understandable, as Dave used to work for Spartan and got pissed off with them repeatedly telling him there was no market for a game like Dropzone, so he went off, founded Hawk and made Dropzone.

Spartan games were the ones who went bankrupt chasing the Halo license and then not supporting it properly because of their famous Spartan Games ADHD, and are now owned by Weyland Games, who are even worse game designers than they were (Impressive.)

Hawk Wargames died because they fell for the classic Kickstarter blunder of promising stuff they didn't think they'd have to deliver and then discovering that no the public REALLY REALLY wanted Dropfleet, especially since it's being designed by Andy "Battlefleet Gothic" Chambers. They got swamped with the amount they had to do, couldn't get the kickstarter out in time, lost a ton of time and money and got bought out by a set of disaster capitalists who most make lasercut MDF terrain. Apparently how they acquired Rumbleslam and Carnivale was pretty similar.

It is telling that at Salute this year we thought we overheard Dave saying Dropfleet was going to get a third edition already and my main response was "well thank fuck for that."
He was talking about Dropzone unfortunately. As yet however, I've not really heard any opinions on how the community is finding that yet, and it was never really my game, I was always on the DFC side of things.

>>
>>98473663
There was a metal LE set for the hero minis of Warcrow Adventures, but I think that's it.
And there's the original Warcrow line from 2005, but that's got no crossover with the current game.
>>

Yeah, so Warcrow is overpriced shitcast/unicum crap. Shame because rules are actually quite cool.
>>
>>98473686

>>
>>98473714
The quality remain poor and inconsistent, internet is full of negative reviews of Warcrow minis and the few Infinity unicool minis as well and no amount of damage control and aggressive shilling will change that. On top of that, Unicool is cheaper and resin and even siocast but in no way it caused prices to drop. It's a shitty material used by greedy companies that are too cheap to use HIPS casting technology despite it being much cheaper than it used to be 15 or even 10 years ago. Hell, shit got so cheap you can even commission your own sets with WGA.

Sure, it is cheap in the sense that middle class person in a first world country can save up for it eventually. But that is still a bit scary for how niche wargaming is if you need more than one kind of sprue made.
>>
>>98473819
>But that is still a bit scary for how niche wargaming is if you need more than one kind of sprue made.
Hardly. GW is shitting out random single sprues every months only to phase them out a month later.
WGA farts out a new box every 2 weeks. Even Northstar and FireForge release sets so niche it would not make any sense for them to even make it through the design face if manufacturing was as expensive as people on /tg/ claim.
If literally-who companies can afford to release mounted Japanese monks and heroic scale Hussite knights then CB can keep releasing all their minis in metal or switch to HIPS rather than use some rubber plastic shit.
The same accusation I address towards SFG and whatever 3-material bullshit they are trying to pull out with Warmachine.

Extra bodies over the 10-man limit are good already. Crows are fast, hard to hit, ignore most movement control, have a high Will score, and replace for free without rolling between matches in exchange for being tethered to a 100-Crown base investment and babysitting a very expensive Thug. They're your cheapest permanent 11th man. Even better if you already have one of the other bonus bodies to back it up.

A solid choice though not usually my first. It's only a 5% bonus for quite a lot of Crowns. Good money sink late in the campaign

If it was in 1.0 then yes. The two editions are not REALLY cross compatible due to changes in how shooting and saves now work. Yea they were over cost for sure. My issue is more with how seemingly worthless orcs are now in comparison with the price drop and new abilities everyone gets but orcs(apparently their ability is now just wild charge which they already had), with elves you got what you paid for, you just couldnt take a whole pure army if you wanted to field a lot of units, now they get innate magic resistance and dont take morale checks from mixed race morale failures. The problem with orcs now is they are weak AND you dont get to take a lot of them, and you get nothing for this. They have the same base stats as humans, cost more, have worse morale and activation.

I also hate that the orc kings and leaders are just human stats but with worse activation, the cost the same and are just worse units. Dwarves get the benefit of having high morale and activation for their cost, humans are the middle ground, elves are quality, goblins are hordes, what the fuck is orcs suppose to be, it seems like they are suppose to be hard to wrangle but strong, but they are not strong at all, and due to not having the new "expected to run" rule they will flee the field before fucking goblins now lol. Bizaree balancing.

>What other Big Stomp Robot games do you know of, anon, that is similar to Alpha Strike?
CAV, Robotech Tactics/Dimensional Warfare. Both games are leaning more towards a handful of stronger weapons per mech rather than completely abstracting damage like Alpha Strike, or BT's massive batteries of guns. Or in other words, the Macross design paradigm.
>Plastic models is ideal.
I have good news and bad news...
>RTT
Models are hilariously overpriced, overcomplex, as well as an incomplete model list because Palladium ratfucked their kickstarter and partner companies. Great close combat rules and the way it handles C2 is fantastic, dead on the wire because of Sembieda's rewrite and the aforementioned ratfuck behavior.
>CAV
see: https://www.talon-games.com/
They're gen 1 and 2 Bones material, and 1:144. The system is overall better at doing what Alpha Strike wanted to do. Streamlines combat while keeping a bit more depth on defense, weapon and equipment selection, etc. Much, much better air support and EWAR rules than Alpha Strike. CAV also has unit-design rules, so you can break out your gashapon, Tehnolog, or MWDA models for extra fun.

The only other mecha game with plastic wargaming models right now is Heavy Gear. It leans more towards modern armor sensibilites than Big Robot Soldiers, and besides the plastic boxed sets it's getting disgustingly overpriced. Like north of $20 per model, $50 for some of the larger ones. Likely exactly the opposite of what you want

Has anyone here bought from Ral Partha Europe? How was the quality of the miniatures and shipping time?
>>

I've been thinking a lot about how warfare has always been fought and how wargame rules handle it. Historically, soldiers on the battlefield are more or less the same, 10 infantrymen vs 10 . Infantryman are generally fairly equal, and actually the main deciding factor in every battle in history has been positioning, terrain, and proper utilization of it.
Most wargames pay little attention to terrain aside from a few irrelevant modifiers like difficult terrain making you move slightly slower, cover gives a -1 to hit you or whatever. Instead of using terrain, rules always add variety via the Warhammer method: giving everyone unique stat lines, army abilities, special rules, etc. Instead of utilizing positioning and terrain, games are won by marching your dudes forward and putting the right stat line against the right enemy.

Are there any games out there that give a much stronger emphasis to terrain and it's effect on the battlefield?
Crossing a river mid battle shouldn't just halve your movement distance, it should mean complete disaster and utter annihilation for your troops if opposed, for example. I think it would be cool to have much steeper penalties and bonuses related to terrain and positioning, which would put more importance and emphasis on it and get players thinking about terrain much more.

Thoughts?
>>
>>98477479
>Has anyone here bought from Ral Partha Europe? How was the quality of the miniatures
Same as Ral Partha US and Iron Wind. Which is to say, some of the molds are old but they're very well-cast tin-bismuth alloy and reasonably easy to clean up. Worst defect is usually some light sheet flash in the crooks of arms, never had a severe mold slip or really bad flashing on anything.
>and shipping time?
Only made two post-Covid orders from them but both got from them to me in under four weeks. Which is pretty much my benchmark when I order shit from Europe.

Would be alot harder to implement with three dimensional terrain. Would need a very large play are or use very small scale of models to get a good variety of terrain. Would need an objective system to avoid players camping advantageous areas. Would need a good randomized system for the terrain placement.

>Historically, soldiers on the battlefield are more or less the same
Historically, the exact same soldiers with a different level of morale performed very differently.
Regardless, plenty of rules like HotT have a small number of distinct troop types shared by different armies, and ones like Warmaster or Fantastic Battles have most of them differ little.
The obvious problem with overwhelming penalties for some actions is that no one will ever do them unless the scenario forces to them to, in which case the scenario will probably suck to play.

>Thoughts?
No offense but it mostly seems like you haven't played many wargames and are stuck on some form of warhammer mental hangup.
>games that give much stronger emphasis on terrain
Unironically the Rampant Series might be a thing you want. The troops are very similar with minor variations, attacking into bad terrain is very disadvantageous, mission variety beyond just kill the other guy, etc. Its a very basic game but it sounds like you should start with one of those.
There are skirmish games that have a lot of terrain involvement like Infiinity, Reality's Edge, Zone Raiders, Black Ops, 5 Core, etc. where moving through spaces up, down, crowds, etc. have a lot of effects. There's one about fantasy carnival renaissance europe I forget what its called.
Once you zoom out to large scale battles in a way the terrain has effects but the mechanics for the effects tend to recede or you switch over to hex & chit. Things like Horde of the Things, Fantastic Battles, Warmaster, Brigade Commander, etc. have terrain rules but they're operating in an abstract enough scale its different.
I tend to find 28-32mm the worst for anything larger than platoon vs platoon sort of conflict but ymmv. Medium sized medieval+dargons battles are not a thing I like much so things like Saga, Oathmark, Mantic's warhammer fantasy battle, etc.might have something for you but can't speak of them other than
>might, but might be too stuck on being warhammer fantasy style
There are some more specific games that have terrain effects more as LoS blocking like Gamma Wolves, where its quite important, or games like Battletech that have a lot of different terrain effects you're looking for.
Not sure how granular Spectre or BLKOUT are, haven't had a chance to play them yet.
You could also start going towards Kriegsspiel gaming, which is not the worst but does involve at lot of patience and communication between players and an adjudicator. Out of characters but check it out.

>>98479188
>Once you zoom out to large scale battles in a way the terrain has effects but the mechanics for the effects tend to recede or you switch over to hex & chit.
Yeah I remember even Ogre. Having pretty significant terrain rules that you had to utilize to win.
>>
>>98477509
I would argue against terrain being the sole nor most important factor. Knowing what unit type counters which or when to use reinforcement or hide troops are equally as crucial but no wargame ever try to implement the last two points anyway.

For me the lowest you can abstract troop type is with a quality rating à la One Page Rules where at the very least you can distinguish between green levies and mercenaries. It's a great catch all term going from armour level to willingness to fight to reactivity and formations drill.

That being said, Age of Hannibal from LWTV has a pre-battle mini-game where you and your opponents take turns building the battlefield. It represents how generals never fought at first encounter but tried to meet at choke points best suited for their armies (like a wide flat field if you have chariots or phalanx).

I just remembered the round edged bases Warmahordes uses in their models.

Are these bases a choice stylistic choice by Privateer Press or is there an actually utilitarian purpose the base design serves for miniature wargamers?
Like the round rims "protecting" the paintjob of the model by making a significantly sized "border" the fingers only touch when picking them up?
I've never held a round edge base so I am unsure if they are easier to pick up.

It also made me curious to why most miniature bases have an angled edge. Is that related to plastic injection machines or is there another thing that might be forgotten?
>>
>>98479384
Several games use those bases, Burrow and Badger, Oathsworn, etc, and I HATE them aesthetically.
They actually make it harder to pick up by the base as well because the rounded edge is harder to grip
>>
>>98479384
Also, most game use angled based because Warhammer does. It's that simple.
The best bases are flat low profile based
>>
>>98479410

I have theorized that maybe the base angles that make the “basing areas” of a base slightly smaller is so fingers don’t touch the basing or minis when picking them up if the wargamer prefers to grab mini by base instead of grabbing minis.
While varnishing can remedy this maybe the original designers took into greasy hands even back in those days.
It might some kind of compromise between plastic injection mould machines back then.
I’ve bought a hoard of those gw styled angled bases from a Chinese vendor on aliexpress for cheap. I’ve got loads I can give to friends. And for testing basing schemes.
But I am curious as to whether “right angle edged” bases are easier to pick up.

But this whole discussion has made me self conscious about whether I have greasy hands right now even after washing and drying them after using the restroom.
>>
>>98479665
I like GW-style bases because the raised and angled edge separates minis from the battlefield. It's easier to spot them, tell their position etc. On top of that, by separating them from the battlefield it makes them more pronounced and distinctive, they feel like independent heroes which I really like since I'm playing skirmish games mostly.
>>
>>98479568
I use whichever base is closest to hand. It drives other autists insane. Lately it's been the thin bases that come in Xgrave kits and WGA's dual purpose bases.

>>
>>98479867
I haven't, mostly because I don't use magnetic solutions for storage or transport, but they're fine. They do have a big logo on the inside but that doesn't affect anything if you fill it in with basing material. I use Liquitex modeling paste as my general purpose filler.
>>
>>98479916

>>
>>98479895
>Current edition might be that bad that the op has had these rules for a while.
/40kg/ has alternative rules in the OP for three editions now. Some of the editions were good when compared with other editions of 40k but when compared with non-GW games, 40k was always mediocre at best and barely playable at worst.
>Who here has played any of these games and how fun are each?
Playing OPR a lot, very decent game. Modular, customisable, great alternative for 40k and AoS despite playing nothing like either. Remember to NEVER play with basic rules only except for your very first game maybe but even that is a stretch.
>Lastly should a pastebin of games that easily allow for warhammer models to be reused organized by free and paid and specific Warhammer games?

It's plain white with no particles, texture similar to sour cream or maybe frosting. It dries hard and sandable, sometimes with a small amount of cracking and can be thinned with water since it's acrylic based (also becomes less sticky when wet so you can smooth it out using a wet tool). Once hard, it takes other paint just fine. I use it to fill gaps on models and bulk out bases, then put a thin layer of ground effect paint or sawdust or whatever I'm using to make a base over it.

I've never used AK texture, but a quick look at a video of it makes me think it's pretty similar and you can probably do something similar with the generic modeling paste by just mixing some chunky sand into it along with some color.

>>98480135
>Maybe a pastebin for wargames where warhammer models can easily be reused?
No, why would we have one? GW has maybe 3 games that matter and there are thousands of other wargames around, 98% of them mini-agnostic.
Warhammer games have their own Warhammer-centric general threads. This one focuses on alternative wargames and while GW refugees are welcome here, they deserve no special treatment.
The first step of leaving the GW cult is to start searching for alternatives on your own.

I do want a nice mini agnostic game that does modern, sci-fi and melee combat good for maximum agnostic.

>Is this the same stuff that is basing paste sold by hobby companies but with pigments and extra grains added?
Depends on the company. Vallejo? absolutely. You can get it straight from the manufacturer with particulates, either a mix of pumice grains or fibers that are really good for mud. Mix in ink or paint to tone it. I use the stuff constantly and it's like $15 for a pint. You can also make large batches with basing sand and particular pigment mixes, pop them into a small airtight container, and then write the mix on the container and they'll keep for months. They also make exceptionally cheap crackle pastes.
>Is AK hobby-taxed
Yes. But not as badly as some companies. Again, for the price of mixing your own you can get literal pints of Liquitex or Golden molding pastes for the price of an ounce or two from most companies.

>>98480135
>Maybe a pastebin for wargames where warhammer models can easily be reused?
Pretty much anything marked "mini-agnostic" can handle them to some degree. It's usually the weird edge cases like esoteric Space Marine gear or individual war machines that don't really fit into anything.
>but what if we get flooded
It happens occasionally, they don't actually want intelligent answers here. They want a youtuber to tell them what the best alternative is so they can flood and destroy that community instead.

>I do want a nice mini agnostic game that does modern, sci-fi and melee combat good for maximum agnostic.
Brutality for skirmish. Erewhon for fantasy. I'm partial to WarEngine for SF but it needs a bit of house ruling for the terminally tournament-brained.

>Historically, soldiers on the battlefield are more or less the same, 10 infantrymen vs 10 . Infantryman are generally fairly equal
Not really there can be huge differences in the effectiveness of different similar troop types, for instance Roman heavy infantry were much better than greek heavy infantry and Mongol light cavalry were much better than Chinese light cavalry, and though terrain advantages were very important in battle the biggest factor was usually logistics, whoever kept their troops well fed and supplied enough and had the least troops die of dysentery and disease by the time the 2 armies came face to face was usually the winner

It's so when you're basing a model you can use texture paint on the base and it doesn't slop over onto the rim. Or makes it easier for base toppers to be centered on the base.

Or it might just be a manufacturing issue with round vs. angled bases to reduce manufacturing defects. Shadows of Brimstone has the same round rims but the center is elevated rather than dipped. (Though given how many issues they had with their first minis manufacturer, I wonder if they asked for dipped and they got it reversed.)

How much extra treasure should we be adding? Lich Lord scenario 4 has 4 tokens in the middle then 2 more placed around. Upping it for 9 total tokens seems too much (scaling up even), so just add one extra to be placed?

Multibasing. You can do this in most wargames that have large units. Its not a complex concept.
>assemble models on larger bases together as blocks because it looks cool
>mark casualties with other means like dice or casualty models
Sometimes you have to sort out frontage adjustments based on damage but as long as you're communicating that with your fellows it works fine.
A lot of grogs were using little cotton puffs for smoke in games when I was a kid. Or using steel wool painted to look like explosions for supression markers and the like.

For fantasy I am aware of Warmaster, Mayhem, Fantastic Battles, and Warband. All are meant to be played at smaller scale with many units on a single base. >>98485291
Haven't dug into Rogue Hammer but if its Squadhammer based, which does not have a very deep array of modifiers, 1-3 seems like it would be about it. Granularity isn't what it was for, its a beer & pretzels push models around sort of game, which is perhaps what makes anon's complaint about it being too complex so puzzling.
>>
>>98483125
>>98479384
Warmachine used them for a couple reasons:
1st, they were different than what GW was doing. That made them cheap to acquire in bulk and helped differentiate them.
2nd, the rounded edges made marking the base easy for LOS and front/back divisions.
3rd: Warmachine was all-metal at launch, and the slightly wider bases with the moulded support from the slot helped keep the models upright.
They are a pain to pick up, but the recessed center did help visually seperate the model from the game table.
>>
>>98485191
Maybe he wants an even simpler version of advantage/disadvantage like in D&D? No numbers, only roll an extra die and take highest or lowest depending on if you're at an advantage or disadvantage? Of course, then you have to ascertain whether you deserve a positive or negative and that sounds suspiciously like a separate step.
>>
>>98485411
>>98479384
They were originally created as both an aesthetic choice and a way to get around the patent GW still held on slotta-bases. They're descended from the same base design GW started using for 50mm squares and 40mm rounds, with peg-holes in a pattern scattered about the base so you could use around a dozen different standard leg spacings for more dynamic poses than a slottabase allowed. The Confrontation guys deliberately used the new round-edged "display" bases. Because Confrontation models were the painter-flex meme on the OG Cool Mini or Not site, they became something of a fad in the '00s as a prestige thing. Warmachine did use them to be different than GW, but it was also a mix of the extra model stability and trying to mooch a bit off of Confrontation's aura

>>98483125
It predates the widespread use of texture pastes, base-toppers were only *just* becoming a thing, and entirely because of them
>>
>>98484666
Oathmark, isn't a mass battle rank and flank game like anon is talking about. Like Warhammer Fantasy, it's just "squads" of 10 guys who happen to be standing in a rectangle as they move independently around the board. I understand what he's talking about because I too would like to have a real battle line that extends across the table instead of Independent squads

>>98484589
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be this sort of thing for Fantasy, at least not in 28mm. Your best bet would be trying to port something like Warmaster, but even that I'm not sure because I've never played it.

Gw held a patent on slotted bases and the non slotted bases?
What was being used for mini basing in ye old days? Mdf?
I’m pretty sure competitors just copied gw’s base style anyways. I think. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I do find it weird that steamforge is still releasing those round lipped bases as some anons say they are a bit harder to pick up. I assume their hands aren’t greased too. Maybe it is brand recognition. I remember seeing reaper’s lipped bases and those edges are less angled and I think Victoriaminiatures uses those bases for minis but I wonder if Vic is a subsidiary of reaper minis sometimes.

>speaking of bases

I need to magnetize the bottoms of my gw styled bases I’ve gotten from China.
I don’t want the bases to be too weak that they don’t hold properly and I don’t want them too strong that they repel each other.
So what size and type of magnets should I get and should I always put them in the center of the underside of the base?
I wish there was some “underside insert” stls for bases that have a magnet slot hole now. I bought a lot of bulk bases.

>>
>>98493928
Can you find any earlier examples of it? Because that design definitely has enough functionality to get a patent, so whoever came up with it could have gotten one. No matter who had it, it's definitely expired now though.
>>
>>98488213
Yeah. It sounds like a feature of the bell curve, not a bug.
>>
>>98493900
Absolutely not patented. Especially since the trademark is for "slottabase"
>>
Since it's relevant
Copyright is for artistic works. Plain black bases with a strictly functional feature are not artistic, so copyright doesn't apply. Copyright doesn't expire for almost a century thanks to the rat.
Trademark is for the name and logo of things you are selling and who you are when you sell them. "Slottabase" being a trademark means that name is legally only allowed to be used for that product line from the company that owns that trademark. Trademarks expire extremely fast if you aren't using them, but never expire if you are.
Patent is strictly for functionality. A new kind of base with a slot in it specifically to fit tabs on the bottom of models is functionality. It could get a patent. Or it could not, the longer you let it sit un-patented, the less likely it is anyone can have that patent. Only the first manufacturer to make it can have the patent by default. Patents expire fast.
>>
>>98493900
The term "slottabase" is trademarked. The design is not patented
>>
>>98492260

Neat model save for the flame effect on the weapon. I dislike flame and smoke effects on miniatures.
>>
>>98494263
Bonus round
Trade Secrets are just that, secret. If you invent a new thing and can actually keep it a secret, then you don't have to deal with patents or anything. You get to keep your thing exclusive for as long as you can keep it a secret. But the government isn't going to keep it secret for you. If you put it out in the world and someone reverse engineers it? Tough luck. If one of your employees leaks it? Well, you can sue them if you made them sign an NDA before they learned the secret, but the genie can't be put back into the bottle. If someone else stumbles on the same concept without poaching one of your insiders? Too bad.
>>
>>98487274

>>
>>98493837

Are the big brand cutters like Citadel or Army Painter ones doing a way better job or am I fucked?

Does anyone know how tall are Mantic's halfling infantry and cavalry?

Also, should I take the leap and try out Warmachine? I haven't played for a while, early MK3, but I've seen Kithguard and I admit I fell for the meme Rambo Trollbloods. Is there any resource online to check how each army plays?

the fuck are those lol are you a farrier

just get a couple of wire snippers like these and you're okay for a year, they're a couple of quid each on the internet
>>
>>98495101
As >>98495115 says, alternatively if you want to splurge on something that is 'better', Stedi clippers will be a big upgrade since they're dedicated hobby tools and not too stupidly overpriced
>>
Is there a unit block wargame that emphasizes smaller groups? Something where spearmen aren't running around like a blob of hooligans but there's not 500 of them on the table? I used to play sub 1k point games of Warhammer Fantasy retail a lot and I want to capture that warband on warband feeling again.

Building a few armies for Fantastic battles myself, based for warmaster revolution. Aim to have a multiplayer game the end of the year

anyone going Spru?

God Hand makes really good clippers anon. I wouldn't recommend their best clippers for you since they're not generally worth the money imo but their cheaper ones are fantastic.

So I was right to call it bullshit. It reminds me of those retards screaming and shouting that GW comes up with "slave-names" to make them "more trademarkable". Meanwhile, it was Dispossessed Warriors that got trademarked, not Orruks or Ogors.
>>
>>98495864
I thought the Bongspeak names was so it was easier for them to go after reprints or 3D modellers who get too close to GW's style. A lot easier for them to argue moh copyrwoight m8 when you use the term Orruk in your listing.
>>
>>98496045
Nope, it does not work like that at all. It's a fact that 95% of GW complaints would be dismissed if creators wouldn't fold like a lawn chair. I had my 3D print listings targeted by GW once to my honest surprise since I'm selling my shit on a local eBay knock-off. I simply pointed out that such an item is not being sold by them and I don't use any of their trade marks. My listing was brought back and I never got any further response.

maybe Elf Knyghte Pyke Sworde
I haven't read or played it, but it has smaller scale and with models acting in groups
currently started reading Havoc by Brent Spivey and it seems to have group activations with individual model actions too
not sure what size of armies you had in mind
>>
>>98496095
I was thinking around 50-80 models a side.

Good on ya. I've been trying my best to paint one regiment a week. Been slacking this week though.

it looks cool, but who lives in the uk
and im jealous
>>

The UK has the same number of people into wargaming as the US but in a much smaller area, so these kinds of events get like 100+ people in comparison to the 20 person event in Bumfuck USA where you can't find more than a handful of people into wargaming unless you live in a city.

dunno, maybe check Mayhem: Fantasy Mass Battles by Brent Spivey then

Which Stedi or Godhand model do you guys recommend? There's half a dozen at various prices.

Amazon is selling GodHand Ultimate Nipper 5.0 SPN-120 for 54€ here so it's pretty expensive but still an option. The plastic WGA used for those samurai minis is super hard though and I'll be pissed at myself if my new 50€ pliers were to break on it like some of the horror pictures you see in the 1 star reviews section.
>>
>>98496390
The issue is you have to live in the UK.
I rarely post anything in social media, but I do enjoy that not even my third world country would throw me into jail for calling out stupid shit our government does

Not a thing I play or have the book for sorry. Wrong scale for me to do, I've considered modifying Blücher for a more fantastical bent at some point. I like a lot of the grim and gunk covered napoleonic and ww1 stuff that came up in the last few years but don't personally care for skirmish scale or even 28mm in those settings.
Could try the share thread.

Been using these for years. Use them at work all the time. No notable difference between them and whatever hobby tax shit you're looking at.
You can buy them in 10 packs on jeff's river for significantly less. They're made in the same factory cities the $50 ones are.
Cut further away to initially free the model then trim the nubs. Keeps the snap from distributing right into the model.

>>98496640
I used toe Stedi MS108-L, the blue one with a single blade. Pretty handy at cutting close to the model without much flash left

I think this is the hardest conflict between a game I want to like, and the actual experience of playing the game.
The bit that makes it work is the civilian response table, much like how Mordheim is a dogshit game with an evocative campaign system.
Otherwise it's just a 4+ game with a bunch of random-roll shite tacked on.
Maybe a good example of "you don't need published rules to play the game you want", because it isn't like any other games preclude the addition of a load of NPC civilians that would get freaked out by a gunfight.
>>
>>98496717
These are what I use. I've accidentally gotten like three of them from other purchases. They're cheap enough some stuff just comes with one, like an allen wrench.

>I want to like, and the actual experience of playing the game
What didn't you like about the play experience?
I honestly really enjoyed the system from a game design stand point. There are tons of tables and stuff to pad out play, but there's essentially only one Fixed stat for every model in the game which is neat from a streamlining pov.

Those toys cropped up in his newsletter literal years ago, pretty sure they are his.
He's the subvertising guy, right?
Not a great surprise that an artist turned out to be a nerd weirdo, and a hipster indie gamer at that.

>It honestly just feels like a game made by marketing team.
The only three people I know who have played it IRL were very disappointed - they said Forbidden Psalm was crunchy in comparison, and the work involved in making a good table was basically wasted because, despite "30 minute games!?" being a selling point, it was so mechanically light they didn't feel like playing it more than twice.

>>98479034
Yeah they are his I remember Curtis from Ramshackle saying the resin parts are from him. The guy reposts them annually if not more.

Doom is not a bad game on a vacuum. It could perfectly be some random boardgame and it would work fine.
The issue is the entire thing is acting like it is the next biggest thing since hot meals.

Our numbers grow!
I got two buddies of mine into it.
One has a 3d printer, and is bringing me some Coftyran tankers tomorrow.
He shot me a WIP of his crusaders earlier.

Arnyarans are the shock horde faction.
They have a special maneuver that allows them to perform a variant of the "covered advance" maneuver, which is instead a mass charge with covering fire, their troops are a little unskilled at shooting, but are more able brawlers, and cheap and plentiful, I expect they will get a roster expansion end of summer.
They look like a fun army.
