I want to talk about my homebrew fantasy setting, but I know that no one cares. I want to immerse my players in my carefully crafted world, but they don't care. They just want to play lesbian dwarves and tiefling bards in a gay homo version of 15th century Europe. I can't find anyone who cares anymore.Back in the day, you used to be able to find players who cared about your creative input as a DM. They would try to roleplay appropriately, they would ask inquisitive questions, they would make clever characters within the constraints of a setting, be it offical or homebrewed. One of my fondest memories is working with a friend to make an entire nation to be the background of his knight-like character. Now, everyone wants to play their gay furry druid or their gay "funny" necromancer or their gay "dommy mommy" warlock and they WILL try to force the issue. It's incessant.Yes, I'm old. Yes, I'm complaining. Yes, this thread will be deleted or ignored. I don't care. I just want to complain. Fuck you.
>>98490814Nigga, you don't play games. Why are you lying? On the internet of all places? I bet you don't even have a homebrew fantasy setting.
>>98490814Nobody cares about your shit because you are an insufferable whiny faggot.
>>98490814That's not true OP. There have always been weird cringe shitters in the hobby. Finding good groups just takes persistence. If your group sucks then find a new group. Sometimes people will surprise you. I'm basically a mega chud but a trans girl is in my group is playing one of the most autistically detailed and roleplayed characters I have ever seen.
Hey man, I miss those times too. Had a DM do the same schtick for a knightly character of mine, we even had a couple other nobles in the party and by the end of the campaign we were honestly more wrapped up in family politics than the plot and loving it. I've been lucky enough to be that DM a few times too, quite fondly remember running a VTM game for a single player that stuck around. The people who cared all got busy, but I guarantee you those memories will follow them forever. It's hard finding the right players, we're lucky to have seen a set even once in our lives. I still look because I'm an idiot, you might too, but it takes time for people to grow into the hobby. Maybe their gay little tiefling is the window they need in the here and now to look into a world and realize they care. Sometimes it's just their deviantart oc but you always gotta give people the chance we got when we were cringe and young and didn't know it.
>>98490814That's because a lot of new players learn about the hobby from podcasts and youtube videos, so they play as if they are on one of those platforms, even when they're not
>>98490844There it is, the first, and only, line of defense of the average retarded cunt on /tg/. Do you get high on your own farts every time you type that?>>98490849Up yours.>>98490882I ran about 7 games of D&D, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds and Stars Without Number in the past 5 years, most of which lasted longer than 20 sessions, and met 3 different groups of people. I can't have gotten unlucky with ALL of them. The best player I met was a 47 year old man who made a Ranger and tard wrangled the rest of the group. I don't know where to find better/good players. I'll take anything, 4chan chuds or discord trannies, if they would stop trying to be "funny" or "unique" or trying to push their fetishes on me.
>>98490945Hate to say it, but maybe the quality of the player is attracted to the quality of the campaign.Either way, good luck in the future, OP. You sound like you’ll need it.
>>98490945Have you ever tried vampire the masquerade? If you haven't played it I know it might sound gay but the world is awesome and I've met the most serious roleplayers I've ever encountered playing that game. Would highly recommend trying it and checking out that community.
>>98490911The cringe of today is a dozen times magnitude more potent than the cringe of yesteryear. The problem is that almost every player I meet wants to live out a fantasy that only "they" can participate in. They want to live in their gay little homo world and pay no heed to my world, or an official world I use, or even the other player characters.Maybe it's a recruitment pool problem because I tried trawling through both 4chan and reddit adjacent spaces and I got roughly the same quality of player. The only difference was that 4channers want to force a joke or an edgy retard gay rapist character (I had to kick a player out because the first interaction his character had with a child was to try and rape him), and redditors want to force a gay superhero. But I don't know where else to look. All forums are dead everywhere else.>>98490958Really? It's the quality of my campaign? Do bad players automatically know it's going to be bad and they hone in on it like flies to shit? When I write that I am running a desert survival campaign, what is the quality that attracts a retard who wants to play a dragonborn pirate swashbuckler? I guess I just have to adjust to their needs.>>98491006I played New World of Darkness/Vampire: The Requiem in 2009 and had a decent enough time, but it didn't last longer than 3 sessions. I didn't learn the system well enough to run it and I never really had interest in it. Maybe the playerbase isn't on the spectrum, so I might have to pick it up.
You're basically fucked dude. You want deep rp commitment with games that are shit at it like >>98490945> D&D, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds and Stars Without Number and can't even into games that are supposed to be better but are still shit at it like Vampire. You don't seem like the type that can comprehend let alone play actual narrative games, where the sot of audience you want went when they realized they didn't have to mash other games into the shape a bit like they wanted. So you're stuck with pug games and whinging about it here. >>98491024>Really? It's the quality of my campaign? Do bad players automatically know it's going to be bad and they hone in on it like flies to shit? Essentially yes. They don't think they're shit players the same you don't think you have a shit game, but that's how its played out every time for how long?
>>98490814>Back in the day, you used to be able to find players who cared about your creative input as a DM. They would try to roleplay appropriately, they would ask inquisitive questions, they would make clever characters within the constraints of a setting, be it offical or homebrewed.I have players who do all these things.
>>98490814Sure is alot of bitching old fags on this board.
>>98490814I had this problem incessantly while running D&D. I moved to GURPS a few years ago and have had much better luck with finding good groups and players. Now there are *definitely* shitty GURPS players who want to shoehorn in a character that doesn't fit the setting - being able to super fine-tune a character brings in those types. But GURPS also filters out a shit ton of lazy, self-indulgent players and selects for people who aren't satisfied with the typical D&D experience today. Of course you still have to look for good players, but there are comparatively so many more good players in GURPS than in D&D.So, maybe try out a different game. You might find a higher caliber of players.
>>98491065I typed this up before seeing that you already addressed it here >>98490945
>>98491024I recommend playing v20 over the newer editions. It has loads of content and options. What I really like about it is how the game encourages you to get extra stat boosts by taking flaws and these flaws then become roleplay anchors for the characters. One of my characters is short fused and elder vampires constantly manipulate him by playing off his anger.Another player character took a flaw called "Dark Fate" which demands that he will die at some point in the story. This fate is unavoidable and he's haunted by premonitions of it coming. It has become part of the plot to understand what his death visions (at the hands of our antagonist) have to do with antag's current schemes.
>>98491024Like, I’m going to be real, bro, I’m saying your players are picking up on how much of a prick you are and probably responding accordingly, whether it’s not showing you respect or treating your game as an excuse to do what they want.Like, you’re pissed at the quality of player? After just five years of looking? Dude, I’ve known my current group after over fifteen years of playing with plenty of old friends coming and going. And the time it took to get that group was slow and painful, not only dealing with total retards and wannabe thespians that drove me up the wall but also dealing with my own lack of maturity and shitheaded behavior in turn. It’s not easy, it’s like chewing your fingers off, but you can get a good group if you stick with it.But only if you acknowledge you’re likely no saint yourself and reflect on why those campaigns ended up so unsatisfying. Cause it’s not only the quality of player that a campaign hinges on.
>>98491048Why was it so much better in the 2000's and even 2010's and why is it so much worse now? Did I get worse at running games instead of better? I guess I must have, if I attract all these terrible players. >>98491059Where did you find them? Can you share them? I'm a nice guy once you get to know me.>>98491063You're kind of a fag yourself, if you want to know the truth about it.>>98491065>>98491077I've played GURPS exactly once in my life with people who were, at the time, 10 years older than me at least. Maybe it's a wild assumption to make, but I assume the quality of GURPS players is because of their age and experience, which brings me back to my whining about young'uns.>>98491097Thanks, I'll keep it in mind.>>98491115Don't psychoanalyze me nigga, they come swinging out of the gate with terrible character concepts and I'm as gentle and kind as I can possibly be with them. I try to work to the best of my ability to make them take the game seriously and shape their amateurish characters into something that fits the mood that I'm after. Like I plainly stated, I've ran 7 successful games with 3 different groups in 5 years, but I had to filter out dozens of players and the ones left, although they were agreeable, left a lot to be desired. I'm in it for the love of the game, though, and I pride myself in being able to enrich their lives and imaginations. I just wish some of them would put in a tenth of the care I put into my games, or didn't come to me with their gay little "EPIC DRUNKEN BRAWLER BRO!" dwarf monk.
>>98491188Dude, read the words you type back and imagine them coming from one of the people you booted. Nobody’s psychoanalyzing you because by your own words you’re definitely not better than the special snowflakes you despise. Maybe deflate your ego some and consider that you’re also part of the problem before you go over correcting your players.
>>98491063bussin
>>98491220You're gay.
To be fair, it's not like Early Renaissance Europe didn't have plenty of gay stuff.
>>98490814Did you set up parameters of what kind of races are allowed and what the general tone is to be?We’re these games online or in real life?I usually like to assume you tried to set things up for what limits would be and people just went “oh it’s fantasy my modern era car with heated seating is fine” even after seeing all the work you put in.I like to assume you did these things first before going like literally me pic related. If you did set boundaries on what the options are for character creation and stuff and it wasn’t respected then you have a right to complain.
>>98490814Your ideas just suck and you're boring.
>>98491236That’s your best retort? Pathetic.
>>98491188>Why was it so much better in the 2000's and even 2010's and why is it so much worse now?Go back and read. The players you want are in another castle. >Did I get worse at running games instead of better? I guess I must have, if I attract all these terrible players. Strong possibility but its usually a team effort.
>>98490814>They just want to play lesbian dwarves and tiefling bards in a gay homo version of 15th century EuropeBullshit. You didn't actually take the radical step of asking them what they wanted from the game and get that answer. Which means you didn't give a fuck about them any more than they gave a fuck about you.If you consider players a burden then play solo.
>>98491188>Maybe it's a wild assumption to make, but I assume the quality of GURPS players is because of their age and experience, which brings me back to my whining about young'uns. That's definitely possible, but it's also better passed on to the young'uns, whereas in D&D nothing at all is passed down. I'll also add that /GURPSgen/ doesn't get the same toxic shits that threads like this one get, where they'll attack you and gaslight you for having different tastes and expectations than them. I'd encourage you, one oldfag to another, to come give it a shot. It doesn't sound like you have much to lose at this point tbqhwyf, though I do appreciate that learning GURPS takes some time.I'd offer more advice, but I don't really have any, since I've been playing this system pretty exclusively for 5 or so years now and just don't have that same problem anymore. Either way, best of luck, anon. Remember to ignore all the worthless faggots that flock to threads like this, and that the flack is always thickest when you're over the target.
>>98490814That's just how time rolls. We had a core group of 12 who used to play. But time changes things. Someone got a job elsewhere, someone else got married, someone had kids. Slowly, those twelve dwindled down to nine, 7 five, and now it's just me and two others from the original group. We've recruited one other player who isn't interested in projecting their own personality and/or sexuality into the game, but it was just pure coincidence that we found her. Everyone else we've invited was just shit. Just shit, through and through. We don't bother recruiting new players anymore, and I have made my peace with the fact that sooner or later, this last group will break too, and then it's no more games.

>>98490814Your super special OC donut steel Magic world it's just as gay as all of the purple haired teeflings in the world. Players don't want to be completely immersed in some fully fleshed out fantasy world, the only parts of the game that need to be fleshed out, or the parts they see and interact with. You just want to masturbate your supposed fantasy fiction writing skills in front of others.
>>98490945Three groups of people? That's like 15 people, anon. It's perfectly possible that none of them are serious tabletop gamers. There's a lot of people in this hobby these days that aren't as devoted as some of us long-time fans, that's normal. Where do you look for players right now anyways?
>>98491188>Can you share them?Ça dépend si tu es dans la région de Montréal. On joue seulement en présentiel.

>>98491188You know what the redpill here is anon ? Instead of looking for players you should try grooming your own players. Find people you already trust and introduce them to the hobby. Worked for me in order to avoid gay progressive types.

>>98493489Irc channels (Which are all dead) and discord servers (Which are all gay). I tried gamefinder general a long time ago, but I didn't quite mesh with their clique.
I've got a different problem (something I am sometimes as guilty of when it comes time for me to play) where most of my group will not make a character at all. Sometimes they might make a build, or something approximating one, but a lot of the time they just seem to exist with any details about their character being completely irrelevant.I might a little die inside when in a group where one player plays a catperson and meows whenever they want to speak for their character, but at least I remember even a single detail about the horrible beast. It's not like I railroad them with no chances to make decisions or roleplay either, they seem to always just take the path of least resistance without complaint or comment.

>>98490814In my experience, you rarely make people care about shit in anything more than very broad strokes at character creation. Make a reality that weeds out stupid people, and both problem player and problem character will naturally tend to depart the campaign. Can this thinning process lead to the destruction of the campaign? Yes. But if you've spent the time making this bitching thread and replying to others posting in it, you've got time to work through groups of the incompetents.
Find GURPS 3e players and notice the difference.
>>98496788Will 4e not suffice?
>>98496861NTA (I'm the one who recommended GURPS earlier in the thread).4e will be ok but it will require filtering. There's a good population of 4e players that will not jive with OP. But 3e players, the population will skew more oldfag and therefore more like what OP wants. That being said, GURPS doesn't have edition wars, so a lot of 3e players still play 4e, which confounds the topic a bit.IMO, 4e would suffice just fine.
