I wonder if the reason why the world is so high in a lot of fantasy settings is because dragons have a lot of magical powers right? As sorcerers of a generally high level, if they wish to do so they can simply go through the elemental magical planes in order to dine on some food after all, so naturally because of this whenever they come back to the material world, they begin to shit everywhere and it's highly unlikely that they would brown all over their caves. Even if they have a cloaca and not an anus, I believe that thanks to their precognitive abilities they would be able to predict when they need to go to the bathroom and as such have a rather strong sense of hygiene as well. This is probably why the elves are so snooty, they look up to the dragons and notice that their dens are not full of feces. Because of their body mass and volume of food they eat, the dragons help populate the world with their dung and spread it around across the world, feeding into the planet with their magical nutrients all sorts of plants gain magical properties from the elemental planes and through this animals also start to become more magical and even druidic magic comes to be usable to the elect few who can practice it because well at this point EVERY plant in the world is magical and also because of this, every single living thing in this planet is also magical even if they don't wish to. This is why the fighter doesn't die from touching magical weapons, the radiation doesn't bother the fighter because even someone who is as unmagical as a fighter has regular exposure to high concentrations of sorcery and through this they are able to power themselves up on magical gear. And this is like the least magical class, a barbarian is basically surging with magic because of all the magical creatures they eat on the regular to keep their muscles big and strong.

And for good reason: it's naturalistic, it has a lot of moving parts but is deceptively simple, and people think it's "neat". I know some people might say "Game of Thrones", but that would be incorrect as the dragons 'sustain magic' through some kind of sympathetic phenomena by their mere presence as opposed to an actual layered ecological process.
