Are the imperial stormtrooper guard army going to be squatted any time soon?
Lately felt the itch to paint some. Maybe a custom one out of third party models. Oddly enough are the kasrkin the “standard look” like how the cadians are for most guard regiments when the stormtroopers aren’t working for the inquisition?
>>
>>98503019
Scions got their own kill team a year or two back, so likely no.
>>
>>98502970
Nah, when eldar have a 30% winrate they just wait patiently for the next codex/dataslate to make them broken again. Eldarfags are usually oldfags who've been collecting a while. They know GW can't go one edition without giving them a meta build.

>refuse to roll back shrimplification, forcing the game to be filled with asanine rules and stats everywhere
They quite literally have 0 excuse anymore, none. This one simple change would solve half the problems this game has at the moment.
>>
>>98503019
>Oddly enough are the kasrkin the “standard look” like how the cadians are for most guard regiments when the stormtroopers aren’t working for the inquisition?
no this is what your standard stormtrooper looks like now.
and no you don't really have to worry about them going away. maybe one day the scions will get a new kit more in line with the aquilons.
unreleated but I'm kinda angry we don't have more kits for them. its been over a decade and still no sentinel, no sniper teams, no shotgunners etc etc
>>
>>98503019
No. Scions even received a detachment that makes them battleline while Kasrkin are kept limited.
Kasrkin are a uniquely cadian organization while scions are generic stormtroopers, but there's nothing to say that other guard regiments can't have specialist troops like that, they just won't be as famous.

You anons have no idea how much I want the CWC to get into warhammer 40k and start up his antics again in mixing his horse cartoon, hedgehog and dimensional merge stuff with warhammer 40k. He might say he is a lost primarch or emperor but now empress. But he can be unpredictable like that.

What army of 40k would CWC likely pick? Or what are the most likely candidates?
I don’t want to be the one to introduce him to warhammer 40k though let someone else do it.

that's worse than the free fanmade apps since it has shit like manually requiring you to select each gun instead of just giving the default ones and not separating the non battleline sheets out at all some you have to scroll through sometimes massive lists to find things

Steel Legion Drab is too "dark brown" for what you're after, you want a bright "reddish brown."

Try Vallejo Red Leather for that jacket.
Otherwise, try Army Painter's "Dryad Brown."
>>
>>98502812
power creep is fine if appropriately pointed, smaller armies would be extremely welcome, but the amount of different abilities and keywords is a worrying direction for the game to return to.
>>
>>98503067
No word on Creed but Trazyn has the last of the Croneswords.
>>
>>98503108
>power creep is fine if appropriately pointed
I would argue otherwise. That the game would benefit from less lethality and units being able to do less things so that the few things they can do can be more strategic.
>>
>>98503093
Thanks!
I’ll look into dryad brown as it is available at the lgs and I fear the Vallejo bubbling hasn’t been fixed.

Yes I know "anecdote does not disprove the general statement" but even through multiple batches spread over 2 decades I've never had it, so I wonder how much of it is just people being shit painters and blaming their paints.

I’m talking about the new formula Vallejo. A lot of anons reported it. But I think the lid was blown off when that German paint reviewer stahly reported bubbles in his video.
As far as I know Vallejo never addressed this. And anons reported that supposedly the pre-reformulation acrylics didn’t have this problem. I’m not sure if skill issue or downgrade in acrylic quality or both. I know bubbles can appear on all paints but Vallejo now supposedly is too easy to the point where it is better to switch away from what I’ve seen.

Anon, it puts the Eldar back at square one after having made no progress. Initial rumors were that Fulgrim had it and that Craftworlds were gearing up to hunt him down. Now Trazyn supposedly has it.
This means one of the two swords is a fake, yet both are being held by popular named characters who the Eldar have zero chance of beating.
So either

>The Eldar lose to Trazyn and don't get the sword

Nta but is this lore that is speculation that gets parroted to the point where it is believed as fact? I’m not sure if a term for this exists.
I think lore discussion would be better if anons humorously cite lore observations as being from their asses or worse when asking for sources on lore.

Has the alpha legion decloaking armor become believed to be canon by secondaries? I want to know what the fake lores believed to be real by secondaries are and make a big deboooking meme. Especially when it is disappointing.

He is never named but he's obviously him. He gets freed from the museum to fight a chaos incursion and he's having the time of his life (pic related). The first thing he does is asking for a coat. It's however barely a cameo, he doesn't do anything plot relevant.

>>
>>98503293
Nah that's just how Phoenix Lords work. Technically the 'body' disintegrates in the armor though how fast that happens is questionable, since it's only really happened once.
Phoenix Lords are surprisingly not major jobbers, but have been shown both to bleed normally or not have proper bodies.
Bit up to interpretation.
>>
Only Maugan Ra has his original body. He's built different.

Unfortunately I have the physical book, and I am not scanning it when the e-pub is coming out in a few day. Once it does someone will probably post it here.
she got shot by Greyfax, but Trazyn has her in stasis with time stopped as the bolt detonates inside her chest. He needs Orikan to revive her and he basically kill her a few times before succeeding.
>>
>>98503332
I think the only depiction where the body 'disintegrated' was Path of the Warrior, but I always interpreted that sequence as metaphorical, describing the overwriting of Korlandril's soul from his own perspective as his mind was consumed by Karandras. Normal Exarchs still have a body in the armor, and every other depiction of Phoenix Lords (including Path of the Eldar, when Karandras is slain by that dreadnought) states that they have a very mortal body under the armor and if that body is killed, they're reduced to a suit of armor like any other Exarch.

It might be mediocre compared to regular fantasy novel stuff. I wonder if the writers of BL books only care about BL books in the way workers only want to reach acceptable bare minimum and hope their author name means readers will look at their other works they actually care about so hopefully BL book sales trickle down into the book sales they actually care about.
It can be hard to tell.

I meant BL as an umbrella term for the authors. My bad.
I’ll admit I may not have much room to shit on contracted authors that just go for the guaranteed source of income even if it isn’t their passion. If it is the case for some black library authors it depends on how much they “care” about giving their best beyond meeting deadlines and meeting serviceable levels to stay hired by GW to write warhammer books.

I still wonder how long it will be before a writer makes a novel that shows the Eldar not taking catching more beatings than a boxer training punching bag.

I am not a contracted author. The reason I said that was because I enjoyed the logh manga that completed.
That manga and anime still make me wonder if the warhammer 40k battle fleet gothic ships can or actually do fight in flight formations like in logh.
Or at least try to before it all descends into disorganized dogfights in space.

>>98503511
Transports for guard are 12 so you can fit 2 HWS (each is worth 6) in them, at least that's the most obvious mathing of it to me.

You're meant to use Castellans/Commissars in transports, yes. The final space can also fit a Tech Priest, but that's more meant for Chimera spam to sit on a midpoint keeping the 2-3 Chimeras around it alive.

The Valkyrie isn't a great unit right now, it's way too expensive for what it gives and how weak it is on-table. I'd rather have 2 Chimeras, which coincidentally is 10 points less than a Valkyrie, and let the deepstrike duty go to Recon Squads or Ratlings.

I started with Guard in 5th edition. I currently have Guard and Sisters at 2kish points and have been himming and hawing over getting into Tau and CSM in the past year.

I went into a hobby store with my brother who was after model rocket parts or something and I went over to the "Warhammer section" (both 40k and fantasy) instead. The store had a bunch of promotional art featuring guard, and I thought they looked cooler than the space marines as a 9-year old so I asked my mom to buy some for me for Christmas that year and it's all been downhill since.

Anybody regret buying an airbrush? I'm close to pulling the trigger on an airbrush setup and want to know if it's really needed. I plan to play IG, so maybe it will really help with all of the vehicles.
>>

I don't. Word of warning.
They require way more cleaning then anyone ever fucking pretends they do. I specifically minmax my airbrushing basecoats by having the whole batch ready. Do not do one model at a time unless you are painting to entire model with a brush, but at that point you wouldn't be asking this question.

No, it was a blown-up version of the art from the 3rd edition codex of Steel Legion fighting Orks as a poster, I figured it was either official marketing material or the store owner had it made up.
Pic related in particular is the same if my memory isn't making this specific detail up, it has been 18ish years since then.

I only use my airbrush for priming (of everything) and vehicles because I am lazy and don't like cleaning it.

If you don't clean it, the paint gets stuck in the nuzzle and airbrush becomes harder and harder to use. Eventually you'll run into other problems like getting water in the line and causing your paint mixture to get fucked and go all over the mini.

I usually run a airbrush cleaner through it after im done, then disammble the brush and clean it out with little wire brushes you can buy. I'm not an airbrush expert so there might be a better solution from another anon.

Started with Ulthwe Eldar in 5th, realised I couldn't paint for shit so I went to Blood angels instead, Sold my blood angels after 8th and the primarising of loyalists.
Then I skipped 8th, came back in 9th with Necrons and started collecting eldar again with the refresh (but Saim Hann instead of Ulthwe because its just a better craftworld.)
Also I own the Armageddon orks now too. They're pretty fun to paint. I can see why people like orks now.

Pros
>Great for basecoating
>EZ zenithal work
>Good for quickly covering larger surfaces
>Can get even coverage and smooth transitions very easily
>Fantastic for glazing and very subtle color application

Cons
>Can be absolute bastards when it comes to rookie mistakes
>Need good ventilation or you'll inhale aerosolized paint, which is bad
>A bit annoying to change colors and clean up
>Need to learn proper thinning ratios for each paint type to prevent clogs or you'll quickly want to kys

Once you get everything figured out, it'll be an invaluable tool, just be patient with yourself when learning. Also keep in mind that it's not going to replace your bristle brushes and is best used in combination with them. Paintjobs that rely on too much airbrushing have a very distinct, overly soft look to them.

In old lore, some Psykers got the pass like Astropaths cause they were calibrated to always find the Emperor. In new Lore they threw this out the window and the BT’s apparently abuse their Astropaths even though that’s a good way to not have Astropaths anymore and be stranded in space. Maybe since he’s the Emperor he still gets a pass, James will change his mind on a whim.

I don't know of any western uniform that actually looks like a Cadian apart from the colour scheme. I've never seen flak pauldrons or a Cadian style helmet in a history book. Seen plenty of desert dwelling dudes in robes with head wraps in those books. I mean sure it's derivative of actual historical military styles but so is almost every other regiment. Vostroyans are russians, mordians are french, krieg and steel legion are krauts. It applies to almost all of them not just cadians.

I'm mixed on a few things. I love the addition of hunter profiles and also love the fact that tankbustas are bs4+, meaning the door is open for specialized Ork shooting units to have the ability to aim (somewhat).
However, I really don't like that all of our basic shooting like sluggas and shootas and dakkaguns are getting lethals against infantry. It bloats the datasheets and doesn't serve any purpose for the guns' feel. Necrons get lethal hits because the weapons atomize you. Orks get it against infantry because ??? Balance purposes?

Ultimately I would like to think that this codex being strong means that the game is moving to smaller battle sizes due to higher points costs. Games have gotten insanely long to the point where we're back to playing 1.5k games just fit them into our allotted game time.
This shit is still better than 10th, though.

Take a then-contemporary when 40k was being made US Army PASGT helmet and extend it to its logical conclusions as if you're a British man in the 80s who has no idea why tactical gear looks the way it does. That and other contemporary military equipment (British, West German, even some Soviet and Yugoslavian, etc) is what a lot of Cadian gear is based on, 80s/90s equipment taken to the nth degree by people who don't know why combat gear is shaped the way it is (so they make some nonsensical conclusions in their extrapolation).
None of them are 1-to-1 of course, but there is a clear line of inspiration you can draw from the real objects to the original GW designs for Cadians.
And a bit of Colonial Marines from Alien on top of the real items, but their gear is also clearly heavily derived from 80s US equipment like the PASGT helmet and vest (and the Vietnam-era flak jackets that came before the vest) so we loop back around.

I'm not a Brit, no. Even my country would make for fun inspo we run an RPG where a bunch of ozzie guard in slouch hats exist lmao. What don't I find interesting about Cadians though? I've touched on colour multiple times, I just don't like how drab they are, the generic WWII uniform (yes, even with the flak plates it doesn't help much). Then there's tactics/culture. Mordians have their disciplined firing lines, Catachans/Tallarn/Vostroyans have their favoured/unfavoured environments, Tanith, Elysians, Harakoni (among other regiments like armoured companies) are specialists in certain types of warfare. Cadia are just... good soldier boys? I hate them for being jack of all trades just like Ultras, another thing I said earlier.
>>
>>98504490
Yeah, I don't disagree at all.
I don't see that as being a uniquely Cadian issue either is my point. They don't even extrapolate or change it up a little bit by adding pauldrons with the Tallarns, they're just Arabs in 40k. Catachan is a planet full of Rambos and Arnold Schwarzeneggers, and there's no less than two not-German regiments. I don't have a problem with that but its not something you can honestly point at as being a Cadian-only issue.

>I'm not a Brit I'm an Aussie
Mate we're both Brits on a different island down here, be real. At the very least that counts as Brit adjacent.

I could go on about how cadians are raised from childhood as fighters, guarded the eye of terror, and have their purple eye thing. And now they have the 'avenge our dead world' thing going on. I'm not trying to say they're the coolest regiment, I just think they're held to unfairly high standards due to being the poster boys and are on par for coolness with most of the other known regiments.

It's an interesting topic of discussion either way, though.
>>
>>98504509
Cadia is a fully militarized society. The good bit of Cadia WAS its civilians - or lack of them. How they all wore camo like tactical mall Texans, how their cities were a mix of Switzerland-Tel'Aviv-Albania with bunkers next to malls and parks.
Then they all exploded.
As for the aesthetic, the world war tunics are the best part of their style.
RIP Cadia: nobody actually knew you, despite being the ultramarines of guardsmen.

Cadia was extremely militarized due to proximity to the Eye of Terror and all the threats that implies. Everyone's given training to the point kids are potty trained being told to aim their dicks like it's a Lasgun and everyone not on active duty is reserve and would be able to shoot if needed. Cadians ended up so effective that they set the standard and a huge chunk copy them for their effectiveness, making them the "normal" for many.
>>
>>98504537
I get your arguments, FWIW if you asked me 5+ years ago I would've been fine with Cadians. The flak armour is pretty cool looking and it's a shame they did the other regiments dirty by just straight lifting historical military outfits. I'd say that my latest real turn against Cadia is just how James has abandoned all other regiments for them, how every single time IG are shown in vidya its Cadians... I'm tired, grandpa!

Yea, there's a lot of half-assing and barely-changed-from-the-source stuff in 40k.
Valhallans are pop culture Red Army in winter uniforms (including the big red star and a white-over-green paintjob on vehicles), Praetorians are literally just the 24th Regt. of Foot from the movie Zulu, Tallarn were originally meant to be a Lawrence of Arabia reference and so on. Hell, the guy who came up with Gaunt's Ghosts said he was ripping off Sharpe.
I do wish that the original designers took more liberties, but we're 40 odd years on the other side of that pandora's box being opened so c'est la vie.
>two not-German regiments
Three (or four), actually. Only SL and DKoK got models though, Teutons are stuck in an old codex.
I would call Mordians space Prussians as well for the fourth, the whole "dark blue uniforms and excessive discipline" is the pop culture understanding of Prussia as the foundation for the entire early 20th century "German martial prowess" thing moreso than representing French elan.

The Ork klans are a genetic predisposition. Orks spawned from spores of a particular Ork are typically going to have the same Klan disposition. As a greater whole, yea, generally the klans will get along with each other, though depending on the respective populations and/or the current leader of the entire warband this will adjust - i.e. a warband comprised of Goffs or Snakebites with a smaller community of Deffskullz or Blood Axes within will have more inter-Klan strife because of how those klans have fairly opposed views.

But as mentioned, leadership is more about the entire organized warband than it is about klans, though simultaneously it can be both. Using Ghaz as an example, in the current Armageddon storyline he's got Nazdreg, Wazdakka, and Snikrot all answering to him as boss and each responsible for Ork forces largely comprised of their respective klans, with obviously a lot of Goffs making up the combined force as well.

I have actually been in a hurricane. I was surprised that my problem was flooding...from the top: the windy rain carried so much water it was seeping from the windows on the 2nd floor, while the bottom floor was dry (I live on a hill).
Had to open the rear terrace door (in the wind's shadow) and sweep the water through the other side.

Luckily we don't get actually tornadoes; we don't have basements. I would love to have a basement. The entire concept sounds so cool! It's like a secret lair under your house.

>Anon said "good houses are made of concrete". That implies he
I'm anon, I know what I imply. Good ("expensive and sturdy) houses HERE are made of the materials I mentioned.
We also have wooden houses, but those belong to very poor people and are mostly in bad conditions.
Foreign builders keep pushing for wooden designs, as wood is actually fine for building and vastly cheaper...but people here just aren't used to them (Spanish-style construction), and believe all wood is tinder waiting to burst aflame.

Or rot with the sea spray. The high salinity makes people distrust exposed steel also. It's plastered blocks or reinforced concrete.
Even if it's a tiny shoebox, it has a concrete exterior.
>>
>>98504734
Okay, well what you need to understand is that your experience doesn't apply the world over. I live in a tropical environment and wooden houses breath the best in the humidity. We have big fancy ones with wraparound porches that can cost a small fortune. Also not 100% sure what's done to resist the salt spray, but we have them on the coast too and they're fine. So get it out of your head that wood = flimsy and cheap, it's simply not true.

I think the plan is to paint the green on everything, finish painting one of the characters to completion, then paint another block of colour on the rest with the aim being to prevent burnout.

Anon, "anarcho" comes from the Ancient Greek "an" meaning an absence of, and "archon" meaning leader.

"Anarcho-" means some sort of organisation with no rulers.

The Imperium is the polar opposite of "Anarcho-".

You're probably looking for "Pseudo-" (meaning "false") or "Auth-" (a modern political term, short for "Authoritarian", the opposite of "Anarcho-").

All Imperium regiments are "Auth-Right" in political terms, with the exception of rebellious ones not in full compliance.

Either infiltrate high up the board as a speedbump, or screen your backfield against ingress moves and hold home. Bullshit. Fights first is literally taking turns to pick a fights first unit (units that charged or have native fights first) to fight, and then when all those are finished continuing to take turns. In no way is that more complicated than checking the initiative values of all eligible units.

Interesting
Looking forward to it

I still don't understand the point of initiative. What does it simulate? What breaks if it's removed?

I can understand fight first and fight last, as in units that are so fast they hit before you or weapons so cumbersome that they only hit at the end.

For most cases it's a question of fighting skill.
Maybe I'm retarded.
>>
>>98505914
Fights first and fights last requires dividing the combat into 3 steps, one for each rule, with its own weird interactions when certain rules or actions grant one of those rules or when you're activating out of phase. Initiative is literally just going in order from 10 to 1.

>I still don't understand the point of initiative
>I can understand fight first and fight last
then you understand the point of initiative, it's just that with it, instead of fight first/last, there are more than just 3 levels of initiative
>>
>>98505924
Initiative represents how fast a unit is in combat, so faster units like Eldar will get to strike first and slower units will strike last. It's not that things break if you remove it but it was a very simple solution to figuring out in what order is combat resolved. A lot of heavier weapons were balanced around the fact that they had shit initiative.
>>
>>98505931
>>98505932
But is that really necessary? Do we really need more than 3 levels of initiative?
Genuine question
>>
>>98505936
Not necessarily. The issue isn't having 3 steps, it's how the underlying rules are written. If fights first and fights last worked exactly the same as initiative steps then there would be no issue.
>>
>>98505936
do you really need more than 3 levels of armor?
>>
>>98505927
There are two steps: fights first and then not-fights first. It's incredibly simple if you've played a game of 11th. Maybe you're getting confused by having to actually make tactical choices during the phase and want it all predetermined?

What "certain rules or actions" are you thinking of? The potentially complicated out of phase stuff like fights on death would interfere with initiative as well.
>>
>>98505945
>Maybe you're getting confused by having to actually make tactical choices during the phase and want it all predetermined?
it's rare to have so many units in combat that choosing which unit to resolve first is a real choice, most often you just pick your most powerful unit, or whatever is engaged with the enemy's post powerful unit

if anything alternated activations should happen at range, and melee should be more chaotic and with less control
>>
>>98505940
I haven't touched anything past 5th, how does fight first and fight last work in comparison to initiative?
>>98505941
For a game like 40k I'd say so. I'm wondering if that granularity is needed for melee combat, since it's quite hectic and brutal.

One of the first wargame was a literal coin toss when two units engaged in melee combat.

It's like a mini fight phase with only the models that have those rules and it has tricky interactions with any other rule that makes you fight. Or at least that was the issue in 10th, I don't know about 11th.
>>
>>98505951
>if anything alternated activations should happen at range
An alternating shooting phase, or a combined shooting/melee "fight" phase would be cool. Do all charges in the movement phase. Speed the game up.
>>
>>98505963
No way they made it more complicated than
>okay fight first units attack, resolve these attacks
>okay regular units attack, resolve those
>okay now fight last attack, resolve those
>done

It shouldn't be harder than that. Yes I am clueless as to how 10th work, now is learning time.
>>

Fight last doesn't exist anymore.

That’s why I was going to make the lines finer and paint the trim/chisels gold. It would take away that blocky look a bit.
>>

That isn't how it worked at all in 10th, and not in 11th either. Fight phase in both is "units with fight first goes first, then others goes, players alternate" with the non-active player going first in each case in 10th and the active player going first in 11th and then alternating from there. Fights last doesn't actually exist in 10th or 11th, so there's just two steps. There are finesses that happen when units pile in (if you pile into a fights first unit, for exampe, it becomes eligible to fight right after yours and indeed has to if its the only fights first unit ready to fight), but that sort of thing had to be dealt with even in old editions, since it's been something that happens for as long as pile-ins have happened (and it is a thing in at least my copy of the 4th ed rulebook) and was no different when it came to initiative, if a unit with higher initiative somehow got pulled into combat, it got to fight and you jumped back to whatever initiative step it is at. You could never dodge a unit fighting by piling a lower I unit into a faster one, they still got to fight.
>>
>>98505990
NTA but if, in the end, it's pretty much the same, why change it? A special rule to handle those steps is still a worse format than a simple stat.

>Do all charges in the movement phase.
then you lose some fun interactions or end up with frustrating behaviours

for example by putting a small disposable unit in front of your own you completely prevent the enemy from reaching it in combat because the only way for reaching it would be shooting it down and then charging past it, but if charges happen only before shooting then that can't happen

similarly if charges happen before shooting you can just throw shitty units at important units and even if the shitty unit is going to evaporate immediately in combat, the big unit will be stopped from shooting

so I think charging HAS to happen after the alternated shooting
>>
I don't cary about any of this but it should be called assault phase again.

A special rule is better since it can be more strictly limited, because having it handled by a stat leads to "melee" armies that either have weirdly high initiative stats for their fluff, or are simply unable to function because their enemies effectively have army wide fights first against them. Orks suffered badly from this (>I2 memes) but it also means in many cases the only actually relevant stat a unit has is its initiative. You can have a bajillion attacks and strength and ap, but it doesn't matter if your opponent hits you first and has half a bajillion which kills you just as good. Custodes, for example, would be absurdly oppressive against melee armies (and indeed have been with widely available fight first like in index 10th and/or high initiative in systems like 30k) because they will always hit hard enough to kill you and their fluff demands they have better initiative than anyone else. The game just becomes unplayable for armies like WE at that point because what are you supposed to do? You can't shoot them, and you can't fight them.
