>biggest army you've ever fielded

I fielded a guard army that was essentially all infantry and heavy weapon teams. I won that game (and only that game so far) because the opponent's entire game seems to revolve around them deploying stuff in deep strike. I struggled to fill my deployment zone with all of my stuff and unintentionally screened without realising. Not had much luck with guard so far, struggling to figure out if it's me that shit, the army, my units, or all three.

A pivotal role in the book is one who faces discrimination from some of the other Exodites, but has become friends with a Leystalker who faced similar discrimination after she transitioned from male to female.
The villain of the book will be a Necron Lord who, after havint lost his husband to the Flayer Virus, has become a Destroyer Lord sworn to eradicate all life.

>>
>>98506334
Overwatch was Metzen's passion project as a comic book nerd and when the higher ups opted to make it focused on E-Sports he lost interest fast. After that the game hit a steep decline as nobody knew what direction to actually take the game, and they've now settled on trying to appral to the East Asia audience with easily churned out slop characters since they keep getting their budget slashed.
>>
>>98506368
I dunno, daemons have it too but it's like, their gimmick and they don't claim its a fun silly rule so they get a pass.

Sisters are problem child #3 for this. Bananas and clowns at least pay through the nose for the ++ and are supposed to be elite.
>>
>>98506381
Ghaz and wazdakka (both massive units) gaining the lone operative keyword is the biggest piss take, on par with primarchs. The headbutt extra attack is hilarious but s14 doing between 4-6 wounds is a bit excessive

After assembling the exodites I have commentary.

Pros
-they are very modular, it's not simply the amount of bits but the though put into it. The tactical rock, for example, can be placed on multiple feet or none at all. Which sounds kind of retarded, but is actually useful if you were to have 6 squads of dragon knights battleline and needed to differentiate them. Weapons and arms and helmets also allow for surprising modularly and differentiation, having 10 heads for 3 guys can really get you somewhere. There are also 5 torsos instead of 4 like I thought, though missing one of the back ones. However there are only 3 pairs of legs because GW doesn't want you to get cheeky there.

This kit was made with the basis of an army in mind.

Cons
-making terrain out of construction paper is not working and is harder than I assumed it would be and I'm not paying someone online 60 bucks to print out the terrain so I'm at an impasse. The fucking snaggas really ruin this box, being subbed in place of a terrain sprue. But also annoyingly Kt Typhon had a terrain sprue and npo gaunts. Maybe GW should consider decreasing the price of snagga boys if no one wants to pay 60 bucks for an inferior version of boys. The lack of cool terrain remains disappointing.

damn there are a lot of Boyz variants now.

I really need them to make up an actual in-universe justification for why orks get lethal hits on all their bullets or I'll hurt myself.
>>
>>98506612
They did

>Shootas and similar firearms have also gained the Lethal Hits ability when targeting anything that isn’t a Monster or Vehicle, because when you fire that many bullets in the vague direction of your enemy, you’re bound to hit an eye socket or exposed cable somewhere. This should help Orks compete in a game where lots of their opponents will be hiding in cover, and the change applies to most shoota-like weapons in the Codex.
>>
>>98506594
> The tactical rock, for example, can be placed on multiple feet or none at all
As it should be. I think gazkhull can also work without the tactical rock, for instance.

I don't like tactical rocks and I don't want to pay for the extra plastic, especially when it could be another bit. So ideally they'd design the minis so they can be used with tactical rocks, and if need be sell a box of tactical rocks for people who can't do it themselves.

If someone likes tactical rocks/scenic bases in the base box, they're a fucking faggot.

It's on the "supa gatler", aka a giant gatling gun that shoots bullets at 30 000 rounds per minute probably.
Shooting that many bullets at something is bound to hit something critical.

Or look at this way.
Concentrated fire from a gatling that shoots 30k rounds per minute is just going to drill through anything and destroy it.

>>
>>98506649
This argument doesn't even work.
Eldar shuriken weapons and death spinners are designed specifically to operate on this principle and don't have lethal hits.

Ie volume fire and getting random hits in armor weakpoints. They fire mono-edged shurikens that need to hit joints or weakpoints in armor to cause damage. This should mean army wide rending but nah. Orks get it for some reason.

Shuriken cannons do have lethal hits. But there the justification is that their ammo is special, which makes sense as to why the rule is for wounding. "We have high ROF" does not translate to lethal hits. It translates to either higher amount of shots or sustained hits.
>>
>>98506673
Eh, every gun of a specific type having a special rule can work, giving all Gauss weapons lethal hits works fine.

The reason it's lethal hits is so that nobody confuses where the effect occurs.
>Lethal HITS
Hit roll.
>Sustained HITS
Hit roll.
>Devastating WOUNDS
Wound roll.

Not saying this goes for every rule, but these specifically were named with that in mind. I'd agree that rending sounds better, and sustained hits will never sound like what it actually does, but it immediately dispels the question of "what if I crit wound with rending?"
>>

They don't seem to understand that they can increase their total revenue by decreasing individual prices slightly as well (because more people will buy them/they'll just sell more of them to the same people), so I don't think that any "pro consumer" choice by them is on the table.

The alternative was no Steel Legion at all. Did you not read the original justification they gave after the Return to Armageddon video? Pic related, they wanted to squat the Steel Legion.
>still aren't happy
Because GW, in their infinite wisdom, decided in the writer's room to go "let's go back to Armageddon" and then had that made up with marketing material and boxes and their contents designed for it, and then intentionally sidelined and tried to get rid of the guard regiment whose name is on the fucking box.
It's like if we got a starter box with "Chogoris" in big text on it and it contained Raven Guard and Tau fighting it out, and the pre-release marketing video for this hypothetical Chogoris box featured Blood Angels, Raven Guard and Marines Malevolent, with no mention of the White Scars at all. And then a few days afterwards, when WS players start asking "hey why are there no White Scars on their homeworld?," GW puts out a shitty excuse saying they're in such small numbers due to combat as to not really exist as a tangible force anymore.

>>
>>98506893
First, everyone that wants an impulsor already has one and now there's tens of thousands of primarisfag new players that don't own a single rhino. Second, having a cheap transport to carry a full squad is the entire point of the rhino. Repulsors still have a niche since rhinos won't fit gravis or terminators and impulsors have a bigger fire deck though realistically they should be phobos exclusive.

Since it feels like there's a few Eldarfags in here, how would (you) buff data sheets since it seems like everything is going to get stat boosts?

You guys have said higher S for some weapons profiles but I feel like it would be better for Aspects and other specialized units to have (anti X 3+) to keep them more specialized vs a general buff to S. I also think Eldar in general are far too squishy (and I will include all other T3 armies) even with the new cover/hidden rules, because everyone has way too easy access to ignores cover, re-roll all hits, etc.
> Faction wide "hit rolls made against infantry and mounted units in cover/hidden/stealth cannot be re-rolled or modified while still retaining the benefits of cover/hidden/stealth. Ignore rules that ignore this rule (lol back to 9th)".
I feel like that would be a fluffy way to increase their durability by showing how slippery they are beyond just giving them a better save or another wound or more T. There's lots of ways already to give your units cover/hidden/stealth already outside of just being in actual terrain which is fitting I think.
>>
>>98506932
You're not wrong but I mostly said that because I haven't played DE in 10th and was only thinking about CWE and Harlies when I came up with the idea. It would probably be fine since wyches get +1s as a combat drug sometimes anyway.

Let me think....incubi are s4+ anyway, wracks are s4 and have poison
Kabalites are guardsmen and don't get fix bayonets or anything wild, plus Sergeants have venom blades...
Angoniser is poison...
Yeah it should be fine.
>>
>>98506942

>>

That's true, would be fitting to have them get T4 or 2W, maybe not army wide but definitely should be able to give certain units that.

Increase their invuln against shooting or melee, depending on the aspect. Dire Avengers thing could be that it's both.
>>
>>98506963
I like that in 30k the standard is still 1 wound but veterans get 2.
>>
>>98506953
I felt like Strands of Fate was a good, fluffy way of improving the actual effectiveness of Eldar units without resorting to stat padding or wound inflation. It's just so unfortunate that the mechanic was designed so shittily it could be abused to make an Avatar immortal or D-Cannons into 'delete this unit from existence' when it should have been a way of making Guardians and Aspects pull their weight despite the odds.
>>
>>98506953
Marines and other armies have totally eaten into the "speedy glass cannon" archetype James was trying to push. Not to mention that due to stat bloat everything is too tough too fast and too strong for Eldar to even be considered glass cannons. They're just glass now.

Even if you tried to push this again I don't think it would work. Really we just need psychic phase back. Maybe a new army rule.
>>
Rerolls should be limited to strats only. It should be considered a treat to be able reroll something, not a standardised thing that's on so many datasheets. I'm glad they fucked off rerolls during overwatch
>>

With the seeming level of power creep and GW's historical ability to balance Eldar, I'm sure we can expect something ridiculous come the Codex.
>>
>>98506953
Eldar having strong rules to compensate for a mediocre Statline is fine up to a point but the problem is that statlines only go up whereas rules come and go and there's been a lot of edition creep.

Marines are W2 now. They aren't losing that. Assault cannons aren't going back to 4 shots. At some point you have to just ask for stats because the rules keep yoyoing out of existence and either being useless or completely breaking the game.

So your fix might be good for 11th, but then you need a new rule for 12th, and then a different one for 13th.

Armywide fire and fade used to be a thing
Fate dice used to be a thing
Armywide rending used to be a thing
Ynnari's death trigger used to give you an entire extra Phase of your choice on the unit getting soulbursted instead of being useless trash -oh and it was army wide too!
>>
>>98506985
You could give Craftworld Eldar Strands of Fate back in its unnerfed form and they'd probably still be low end in 11th
>>
>>98507009
We need the tau, they're a containment race. Just like the space wolves are a containment chapter.

I don't even know at this point. The Anti-X fix might help, but we are just so damn squishy. I often don't bother rolling at this point if the day is getting long, since everything dies to everything. If we're never getting stat deflation again, make Shuriken weapons AP-2 minimum across the board, Storm Guardians get S4 A3 AP-1 melee, Defenders get S5 A3 on their catapults, and give us an army rule psychic phase. Those changes without any points increases would make them almost right, a little on the weak side.

I DID manage to tie up a Baneblade with a unit of Rangers at the last game I played, however. 5++ against a full salvo from him, he missed his melees, and I just kept falling back into cover. He spent 3 full turns trying to wipe that unit of 5 stealthy boys.

I just want the game to be heavier on universal rules and lighter on MTG-tier combos
Remove stragegems. Strip all of the abilities off of everything but maybe HQs. Make shooting more complex than "haha I can see 2mm of one model's base and ignore cover, prepare to have the entire squad wiped!"
>>
>>98506999
This. Either it's a wargear, a special rule, or it's the OG stratagems for special scenarios.
>>
>>98507061
Deldar get significantly more Movement and Attacks on average because they're shanky boys and girls with faster reaction speeds due to combat drugs, while Celdar get higher raw S/T thanks to still having their psychic powers (and if we don't get a psychic phase, then fuck it, just make the old Warlock buff spells part of their statblocks by default).

goffs are naturally a no go for /40kg/ because they’re the posterboys which leaves klans that have a distinct gimmick
>bad moons using heavy dakka/machinery
>evil sunz using vehicles
>blood axes using stealth and tactics
>snakebites using squigs and being generally low tech
then you have deathskulls who’s gimmick is getting in the fight fast, stealing equipment, and being superstitious all of which makes them very flexible with how you want to use them.
>have them be footsloggers running into the fight fast like goffs
>have them use their facepaints and superstition to be a little more tribal like snakebites

2 biggest issues with stratagems are that GW locks core unit functionality behind them and the "gotcha" element but the gotcha element usually only lasts a couple games for the niche stratagems.
>>
>>98507184
best way to improve wraithguard melee is to just give them AP-1 and maybe an extra attack. They already punch at S5 with 3 attacks, but adding some AP will help them with the clap back until they get the chance to use war construct to fallback and shoot.

I started writing that thinking of just tanks, Imperium vehicles (and therefore their chaos counterparts) are incredibly easy to build because they're all big and blocky with very few (if any) fiddly bits. The only frustrating thing in a Leman Russ kit is putting the tracks together if you have butterfingers, for example.
I don't know why I even mentioned Morvenn in that post, she's fiddly and annoying and I would never in a million years suggest anyone pick Sisters as their first army.
Painting big things is also just easier than painting small things. But I will give you cleaning up paint errors on small models, it's easier to have a smaller jar of alcohol to strip acrylic paint/primer than a big tub for something like a tank.

Astra Mili-what? You're in the Guard, son.
>>
>>98507578
My entire army uses the 30k models. Problem is the squatting of stuff like devastators and gravis being unrpoxyable.
>>
>>98507773
Death Guard have a great Combat Patrol box and are a lot easier to paint/get started with.
>>
I'm new, but I heard about Christmas Battle Force boxes GW does every year. Wondering in advance how hard is it to snag one online, where to prowl? Was thinking of slowly painting my Ork starter set over the months, then getting that discount set when it launches (I assume Orks will be one of the armies that get one since they are the 2nd headliner faction this edition with new stuff, no?)
>>
>>98507773
Death Guard is cheaper to reach point values (because you have to buy less total boxes of models) and is more straightforward "fun" in the sense that you're still playing space marines at the end of the day. Far more beginner friendly even if painting internal organs and buboes is a bit of a ball-ache.

Imperial Guard (fuck "Astra Militarum") is the way that history autists play 40k. The "traditional guard power fantasy" of tanks and infantry in a combined arms mass assault is nowhere near the optimal play right now though. Not a great starter army, very good as a 2nd one though.

I agree to a certain degree. I'd agree on

>make sure every single minute detail is directly copied out of some official photo or manual
solely because I greatly enjoy playing /mydudes/ and replicating out of a book isn't possible there. I do paint them up thinking about how they'd look operating in-field and their considerations, or shading/painting "wear" on vehicles based on how I'd do rust/mud/dust/snow on my historical display vehicles or historical game models.

Fixes for Eldar.
>All kinds of eldar (craftworld and dark) are now 50% faster than marine equivalents rounded down.
>basic infantry move 9", jump infantry move 18", etc.
>Craftworld army rule is a free 6" move after activating a unit during your turn. Yes this means you can charge, make your melee attacks and leave combat before the enemy even gets to swing back though your still obeying alternating activations so you can't protect all your units at the same time. Also each unit can only make 1 battle focus move a turn.
>DE army rule is just that the whole army always counts as hidden. Instead of revealing them as normal shooting just increases enemy detection range by 6" when targetting the unit that attacked. This stacks every time you activate them but resets if they go a round without shooting. Mandrakes can only be detected by enemy units within 6" base because fuck you.
There you go. Both Eldar kinds are still T3 W1 chumps who die to guardsmen bayonets but now the gameplan is to literally never even be in a position where the enemy is allowed to attack you at all. Play like a complete piece of shit and make everyone hate you elfags.

Whatever faction you decide, get the Kill Team first, NOT the Combat Patrol. That lets you see how much you actually enjoy -painting- that faction's minis before you commit 150+ bucks. They are fully playable in 40k as well.

Helpfully, the Kill Team starter set right now is Death Guard vs. Space Marines, so you can see how much you enjoy painting Chaos trim. If vanilla Space Marines doesn't interest you, you can sell them, split em with a buddy or just use them to practice your painting. Worse case scenario and you hate painting both factions, you still have two full Kill Teams and the terrain for it. Vs. being stuck with a half-painted Combat Patrol box that you have to put on Ebay.

Imperial Guard has a whole host of Kill Teams if you go that route. Imperial Navy Breachers and Ratling Snipers are the weird, quirky options. Kasrkin and Spectre Squad (the new guys) lets you practice on painting Cadians, which are the standard (unfortunately). If you're going the opposite direction for infantry, there's a Kill Team for the Death Korp as well. Spectre Squad comes in a box that also features the Red Terror (Tyranid monster) that you can easily flip or use in the single-player "boss" mode for Kill Team.

The reason the votann kind of suck is this
Very little of their art- their conception- is Last Stand battle pieces.

New gw corposlop art just has them standing around, or sending out their floating tanks to do stuff. The Squats were cool because early 40k was cool with standing their ground at their Stronghold for their clan against scremaing green nig- well anyway you get it. Votann are just kind of "there"

What purpose? Carbines are statwise even closer to regular boltguns. They do nothing that boltguns shouldn't be doing already. Heavy bolt pistols also do not serve a different role to regular bolt pistols, that single pip of AP on a 1 shot S4 D1 pistol is meaningless and they give heavy bolt pistols to every unit that's actually gonna use pistols anyways.

>Cadians

>catachans
From planet rambo, need a refresh, have cool guys

Refreshed last year, new stuff, from planet French Nazis, dig trenches and do defensive warfare.
>Scions
The elite, drawn from many worlds, used to be their own mini-army like harlequins
>other regiments
Valhallans
Elysians
Mordians
etc.
They don't have their own regiments and shit because gw doesn't give a fuck even to give them upgrade kits.

But since most guard armies are tankspam anyway you could do these guys and then buy 3rd party bits for your small number of infantry men.

Disagree I think they actually fill a much needed niche, actually several niches at once. In terms of the general lore and worldbuilding of the Votann I think GW did an amazing job, they just dropped the ball in two areas:

>minis should look a bit more rugged and beardy
>get the woke femoid shit out of there

The female models literally murdered their sales prospects.

The reason Votann suck is that "autist technocrats with sticky fingers" is a niche already taken by AdMech (and done way better).

Dwarves are usually the conservative/capitalist faction yeah. Late-Late-LATE stage capitalism would have been an interesting concept, especially as a foil/frenemy to the commie Tau like some of the Demiurg lore hinted at.

I can respect that they didn't want to just make them the DeepRock Galactic faction. Even though that would have been way more interesting than a bunch of soulless clones.

There's almost no overlap between them and AdMech, are you high? AdMech are baroque creepy body horror cyborg religious zealots in robes with censers and skulls on everything, Votann are Space Dorfs with corporate mining colony moonbuggy NASA space force aesthetic and nordic runes. One has skittering multi-legged spider-tanks and the other has huge rolling wheeled land rovers. One has everyone's faces replaced with almost insectile gas masks and multi-lensed goggles and the other they have bubble helmets and fleshy faces with beards. The AdMech hate and despise AI, the Votann's entire civilization is built around it (that's what a Votann is). The differences just go on and on.

First of all there isn't any need for a "next generation assault marines", especially not when they don't do anything assault marines didn't already do. Second, they do have jump packs. Third, there's no real room between a bolt pistol and a bolter. The gear is redundant and makes things inconsistent and bloated for no reason.
>>
>>98508289
Yes. Who are you stealing from? By the picture I'm assuming you're playing World Eaters. Okay so if chainaxes break in combat, where the fuck are you stealing Chainaxes from? Let's say for example you're fighting Imperial Guard, Necrons, and Tyranids. None of them have Chainaxes. So you're not stealing any of that shit from them. Where are you getting them? Maybe they need to start replacing Chainaxes with Imperial Chainswords. Are you representing that on the models, using more Chainswords? Are you taking Imperial style chainswords and filing off the aquilas or whatnot and carving and scratching Chaos runes into them? Then it doesn't really look like you're stealing your gear. How about helmets? Where are the spares for those coming from? You aren't stealing those from Guardsmen or Necrons or Tyranids or Eldar or most other factions. What are you using for transports in between battles? Are you fucking walking? If you're using vehicles what are they? Aircraft? Space craft? Breaking into the webway?

You should think about all of these things.

40k plays around the platoon level so there not much need to detail what the rest of the force is doing, though a general picture does help give context. Say the army is pushing the frontline forward while your force tries to capture a fortification, attacks supplies or communications or it's simply an advanced recon force dealing with an enemy patrol in no man's land. Loads of possibilities.
>>
>>98508359
Okay which is cool and that's a start but then you still got a bunch of questions to ask. Like are they doing any particular missions for the Dark Mechanicum in exchange for this gear? Are there particular items they are sending you to steal in order to trade for more arms and armour and ammo? How are you getting between the Hellforge and the battlefields? Etc.

All players should think about things like this because it gives you inspiration for how to start customizing, converting, and making your army feel real and part of the setting, not just game pieces that respawn in between infinite meaningless tournament rounds.

Bolt rifles, and Primaris in general, just look gay, is all. They just look meh. I just don't like them. Won't pay money for them. It's really that simple. Models are expensive and if GW wants me to spend money on models they need to make them more than just average or good enough, they have to be exceptional, they have to tickle my brain in all the right ways, they have to be fucking awesome. Primaris are just super fucking mid. Some of them in previous editions were downright bad, awful even, but these days they're usually just mid. But mid isn't good enough for my money. Sorry! The fact that they are the reason why the marines I did like are forever gone makes me resent them and no matter how much time passes it's not gonna change.
>>
>>98508446
I understand what you mean, and I agree with you, but I believe that, if the primaris changes had actually looked good, we wouldn't feel that way. It was the fact that almost all the changes were negative.

Why are you like this?
Also I'm talking about assault intercessor squads which do not receive jump packs and benefit from a stronger but still manageable pistol.
>Third, there's no real room between a bolt pistol and a bolter.
You're just being silly now. I'm sorry the existence of new bolter variations trigger your autism but they're entirely reasonable.

>>
>>98508485
Take off your rose tinted goggles dumbass. It was always the same principle of "if you move your guys outside of 12" synapse your guys act retarded", and some lame ass leadership buff bundled in. It was a rule that at best had barely any effect on the game and at worst made our own guys worse.
>>
>>98507928
So much of the Eldar FW stuff is so simple getting it cheap from a recaster is better.
>>
>>98508503
You never played a single edition before 10th and have zero idea what you are talking about.

It was a bubble of 12" Fearless that ignored absolutely all psychology. Also in 4th edition granted immunity to Instant Death, and in 9th was reduced in size to 6". That was it. Everything else was Instinctive Behaviour which was a separate rule that either didn't exist or worked completely differently from edition to edition. Synapse was purely a buff.
>>

Agree on that.

My first instinct was something like:
Units in synapse are immune to battle shock, units out of synapse are battle shocked. But that might be too far.

You're missing the big picture here
This opens the door for the 150-point Leman Russ Punisher (20 attacks of s6ap0 damage) to get Lethal Hits on its main gun

The real issue is that stacking damage is king and you need at least three of any specific counter to get the desired effect.
>>
>>98508264
Mariens are easy,
Mine hotdrop impulsors and use traditional thunderhawk transporter delivery for most of the foot sloggers, they deploy close to the target and then move in after servo skull drones find a good spot. Scouts and Incursors use the Impulsors as highly mobile recon platforms to find the enemy, then dismount and start marking targets while the transports shuttle back to pick up the actual follow on hitters. Force command and veterans chill in a landraider that is used to hammer the hardest target. Drop pods (off table) deliver heavy weapon teams who walk on from strategic reserves to flank from the table edges.

Tau are also easy.

They mostly use retooled imperial ships for transport while the small number of actual Tau hulls are kept close to the actual sept world. Aquila’s modified to drop crisis suits are a favourite. Though it has led to some unfriendly fire incidents.
>>
