Is there an actual gimmick to Red Corsairs, or are they just Coke Zero to CSM's Diet Coke, for lack of a better term off the top of my head? Should I even bother vs. picking a specific god's unique roster instead?

They're all cool in different ways, that's what makes 40k successful. Each faction appeals to a different demographic and they can all play versus each other in a single game/universe.

But objectively it's Grey Knights.

I'm entirely ignorant of the gimmicks in CSM or the specific armies, none of my friends play them and I haven't seen a Chaos player of any kind in like 3 years so I have next to no experience with any of them.
I play Guard and Sisters currently, looking for more things.

I'd consider having a few of the rust spots have that "water trail" you see on IRL rust to show he's actually fought in the armor out in the elements.
As it stands, it looks like untreated metal that's been exposed (but not directly) to the elements for a few years, which makes it look like "I found this in my grandpa's basement when we were cleaning out his house" more than "armor that's been fought in," because fought-in armor will have natural wear from the elements being directly on it in the field.
Your pitting job on the big panels is really good either way.

That little trail running down over the paint from the rust spot "proper" (which is where the paint has chipped off) is what I mean.
The ones on the big panel in front of the cupola are a better example specifically, you see the rust running down from where rain has clearly carried it down from the origin point.

Wish we got to see more types of Gue'vesa being rehabilitated in the Tau Empire. I wanna see how they rehabilitate a former Krieg Guardsman, or a Techpriest or Skitarii whose 90% cybernetics, or even a servitor who wasn't quite as braindead as usual
>>
>>98509842
>no clue how you would do most of that
Here's how I've done rust for Bolt Action vehicles and the rivets on German helmets:
>put your darkest brown paint on the specific spot where the rust is originating
>take a smaller brush with no paint in it and use it to trail the brown downwards like water trails would be
>put your middle brown-orange paint on the edges between panels
>repeat step 2 with this color
>put your lightest orange/ochre (I've used Bestigor Flesh before for this) on the focal points where the rust would be "fresh" directly under rust spots as a highlight
You can find videos of other people doing this, it's very big in historical models and wargames for obvious reasons. I think Duncan Rhodes has a video showing it for terrain as well if you need it from him, you'd have to check.
>>
>>98509842
>buy oil paints
>put a few tiny dots of different colored paint on model
>get a wide clean brush
>dip in spirits
>drag down over the paint a few times
there, instantly have that effect with zero skill or practice required. its one of the oldest armor modelling tricks in the book.

Eh, the Kriegers get hyped up but they're not as suicidally resolute as people think, in their own Vraks book we see Kriegers kill their own commissars so they can flee the battlefield. Unlike the Space Marines, they do still in fact feel fear. As for techpriests, you absolutely could convert them so long as you found one that leaned more towards being a heretek, obviously a hardened traditionalists who hates all innovation and xeno tech would never convert but someone like Cawl?

I posted 5 of them yesterday or the day before. All characters get them, some sergeants and squads. Vehicle too on occasion, though that’s much more variable.

> Brother Cazador, the Saint of Ashes.

> Cazador Peshada was the predecessor to the current 8th company captain. As master of the 8th he was both a skilled apothecary and techmarine. Crippled by a Dark Eldar assassination attempt in M41.883, and, on the brink of death, he interred in a truly sarcophagus and slumbered for several decades.

>In a joint project between Tejana and the Coal Hearts armory the Madrigal Pattern was the product of well over a century of work. The core of the design was a functional Saturnine dreadnought torso and power plant, recovered from an expedition into the Ghoul Stars. The legs and servos, along with much of the cogitator systems were unrecoverable. After decades of no progress, a method was devised to attach the dreadnought torso to the legs of a Dunecrawler and use its systems as a means of bootstrapping the Saturnine’s weakened machine spirit. This of course led to difficulty as the neural strain from piloting such a walker and handling its complex machine spirit would require a strong mind and unsurpassed will. Cazador had that will, after being installed it was found that as a former Techmarine he was particularly well suited to the task. Still, he has spent long years asleep to reduce the strain and extend his functional life. Every campaign may be his last, and the chapter is loath to lose such a powerful warmachine. He is seen by some as the ultimate example of what any Coal Heart may become given enough time, a killing machine consumed bit by bit until almost nothing is left of the flesh and blood man that once was.

That's the 6th company banner under Captain Gigi Nakani, the bearer doesn't actually have a backstory besides being a double ace. The 6th company technically only has the captain and 7 vet sergeants since it's a training company for all the vehicles and aircraft. The banner basically only comes out for ceremonies or full chapter deployments.

I mean, I still get it
Even if you have doubts about your color scheme at times, you still have to choose between sticking to your guns or repainting an entire army from scratch.
Even if it is a pallet that doesn't work well on every unit you paint, there is still some nobility in doubling down on a unique scheme that is /yours/

One of my corsair felarchs was an exodite captured by a deldar raiding party as a young man. Luckily he had a natural talent for fighting, and was spared the torture rack. Instead he was forced to fight in the arenas of Commorragh for many, many years before he managed to escape. Of course as a man wanted by a powerful cabal who has only known violence and bloodshed, he had few options. He turned to Khaine searching for survival and purpose and joined an incubi shrine. Of course he successfully completed the grueling initiation process and even became a klaivex. Eventually his shrine took a contract from a Corsair Prince, where a number of the incubi decided to pledge loyalty and remain with the corsair band. He makes no attempt to conceal his disdain for Commorites, which is not least fueled by the fact that he is much more like them than any craftworlder or exodite. He says that his greatest fear is that the bloodlust will take him, and like the exarch he murdered he will be unable to turn his mind from the thrill of killing. In reality, his greatest fear is that it already has.

he’s still unnamed just like all of my dudes because I am awful at coming up with names

and now we have the grimdark 40k we all know and love
…we do love 40k right?
>>
>>98510293
Hell yeah 40k is fun as fuk

On an unrelated note though, it is funny how some people think that the DAoT was humanity being a Star Trek-esque bunch of hippies and then you read about it and its a bunch of man-made horrors beyond your comprehension. Scientific god-kings that toy with the human genome like putty to produce obedient slave-soldiers by the trillions, sentient nanovirus plagues, the butchers nails embedded into the STC so that every colony can implant it into the brains of their citizens, freakish body mods that turns humans into mutated horrors, etc.
>>

Perpetuals don't exist in any writing of Rick Priestley or co. they are literally fanfiction made up by Black Library hacks.

Not sure how anyone could have come to that conclusion when it caused the Age of Strife that followed and a bunch of horrific weapons are constantly vaguely alluded to being locked away in Mechanicus vaults from that time period.

>>
>>98510344
tbqh Star Trek humanity also had eras of hideous violence. In nutrek they even manage to annihilate warp capabilities for like 90% of the galaxy and have to rely on magic warp fungus.

In 2006 I bought a few guard squads, a leman russ, 2 basilisks, a chimera, a couple heavy weapon teams, and a platoon command squad. I also bought a squad of seraphim, Saint Celestine, an immolator, a rhino, a canoness, and a couple sister squads. Then lastly I bought 1 land raider, 1 order malleus inquisitor, Lord Karamazov, a hodgepodge o the old inquisitorial retinue models, and a couple penitent engines. All put together they made a pretty shitty army but this was back in 4th edition so it was just sort of whatever. People thought my army was weird but it was legal under the old 4th edition ally rules in the witch hunters codex. Still got that on my shelf. I was young and my friends didn't know how to play either. It was a blast.

When Assault on Black Reach came out, me and my buddy split it. That was tons of fun too.

I still have all my old stuff in the old citadel foam case. I'll always have those.
Now days I updated my whole army to the new plastic sisters, I got into tyranids, eldar, and marines as well to mix things up. But I actually didn't really expand the guard despite that being my first army (alongside sisters and inquisition).

let me tell you, the old Karamazov was a hunk of metal. That thing is heavy.
My land raider sadly was destroyed in a moving van, but everything else is intact and safe. if I ever do expand the guard army I'll break out those original guard for nostalgia.
Although I did not do that for the sisters. My current paint job is actually pretty good and the old metal ones when I was a teen are pretty bad lol. So they're fine in the closet lol.

Man, 20 years. It's been a blast. This is a pretty fun hobby, but I think I also just sort of got lucky since I lived near a good store with a good crowd. I moved a few years ago and there's no stores near me now, which makes me appreciate all those years where I did get to play a lot.

Give it basically the same rules as current edition 30k

Add tactical statuses, line, vanguard, make scoring objectives more important that just tabling your opponent, bring back wargear with points, add prime advantages for more customisation

The main complaint about current 30k is gutting the flavour but 40k already lost that 3 editions ago.

I don't want to spend a long time dreaming and coping, but I'd insert a "don't be retarded" clause about angles and line of sight, I'd bring back armour facings, change coherency to be 3 models to lessen stringing and expand the strength and toughness bands out to 20 and then actually use the full length of it.
Oh, and all the codices drop at the same time and rules are free for the entire length of the edition with a MTO for updated core and codices at the end with gilt edges for a final "snapshot" of the edition.
Oh and the norse stuff is mostly stripped from Votann because the Grimnyr is cringe and gay, and also the Kroot and Vespids are removed from T'au and turned into Codex:Minor Aliens along with Sslyth the other small model releases and melee battlesuits are made

Remove firstborn all finally and throw them all into HH.
Give all more factions internal variation.
Make proper upgrade sprues for said different factions. For example Iron Hands and make an upgrade sprue that contains a massive amount of cybernetics.
Make 1 book for marines, make the 9 first founding chapters into codex supplements that are released all at the same time as the main codex.
Do the same for chaos marines, all in 1 book, but cult legions get their supplements

throw out 100% of the scoring rules.

go back to very simple score 1, score 2, score more, slay the warlord and first blood. thats it.

holy hell the scoring and missions have become overcomplicated as fuck.

also, i know the new terrain footprints are meant to solve a problem with vague cover, but they are ugly as fuck. jettison that too. no more footprints, instead just do a within X inches of the feature measurement, and make it close, like 1 or 2 inches tops.

remove knights as an army. make knights and knight sized units like wraithknights and baneblades 1 per 1000pts. that includes armiger squads too. this limit also applies to flyers, though they share

big fancy character shit that you would realistically never see more than 1 of in an army become 0-1 per army, like c'tan

all weapons go down to 1 damage. full stop. wound count goes back down to something like what you see in the old world. really big shit has like 7 wounds tops. most infantry down to 1 wound, most vehicles around 3 or 4.

bring back the psychic phase, casting rolls, and psychic power lores.

i dont want to play old editions, they're missing half the armies and units, armor facing and templates are annoying and a constant source of bickering and ummmm akschually pauses in the game, strategems have been great for the game even if they're occasionally broken. the new detachments and mixing and matching detachments are good. you can finally build all the shit on the plastic sprues you buy and give your infantry all the cool guns and sgt weapons without worrying about being points inefficient.

there's plenty to like about modern warhammer. but the wound/damage arms race has gotten out of control (just look at the new ghaz, he's going to take like 60 damage worth of shots to actually kill for a foot character, and he's hardly the worst offender), the new terrain footprints are ugly and the scoring is way to complicated with buckets of seconary objectives and actions that change depending on who your facing and comparitive scoring matrices and score counts of nearing 100pts. just overcomplicates the game and removes the focus from the WAR aspect of WARhammer. aos has done this too with battle tactics making the game revolve around stupid minigames instead of the battle itself.

Anyway I like raiders because you can use them to represent other renegades like Ashen Claws.

GW is gay though, but the Raider armour is usable for basically that (renegades) and stuff like Alpha Legion if you don't want to go the Full Chaos Hydra route but also don't want to kitbash chaos with primaris (primaris arms are kind of long) or primaris but he's got alpha legion paint. Fills a middle niche of stolen loyalist armour.

These are detachments of CSM, the deity legions have a few datasheets and then miss some datasheets from CSM.

because guard has enough shit and the moment you suggest making this stuff regiment instead of a knights' specific thing it's the moment you lose on any and all peculiar elements such as differences in equipment or in their specialists in the name of becoming standardized in the same way all other regiments are

meanwhile if you make a kill team for knight serf specifically you can get actually unique shit, AND you get the bits to convert your medieval themed guard conversions without having to pray gw for cross compatibility that they simply don't want to implement, not to mention how any inclusion of a regiment ends up spawning faggots asking for 6+ redundant kits for infantry, stormtroopers, command squad, heavy weapon squads, whatever else and heroes

a knights kill team is better

The game takes one big step right back into TTRPG territory. Competitive types get the same slop they've already been served to act as a containment zone. 1000 point games will no longer take 5 hours to work out.

Realistically, you'll probably just get far more powercreep, tons of needless complexity that doesn't serve the game whatsoever, and models that you'll either really love or really hate - no inbetween.
>>
>>98511266

NTA but while I do play it occassionally since it's the only thing I can get friends to play, it's way too strict. Static lists with static gear, no customization, not any real frame for narrative games. Necromunda is the same kind of skirmish game but better in basically every single way, but it requires a lot more terrain (the saving grace of KT is that starter sets come with a full board) and GW refuses to transalate the rules so I can't get anyone to play with me.
>>
>>98511669
Yeah theyve been stupid with the balance recently but balanced matches are fun
>>
>>98511394
What I'd want from CSM is effectively just renegade marines.
I'm not sold on the skulls and spikes and rot and decay (and the annoying-to-paint trim and ornamentation) all over my shit, but "space marines who've had enough of the Imperium's bullshit and decided to strike out on their own as bandits/pirates/Chinese-style-warlords" does appeal to me, even if it's dumb "in lore." Corsairs just seemed like the most obvious of the CSM flavor options as a starting point for what I'm after.
>>
>>98511668
Awful powercreep with every release, releases designed to be FOMO baits that lock new Teams behind limited-edition boxes, most awful LoS and cover rules I have seen in any skirmish game, no list building causing ebery game to be a carbon copy of any other game played with the same teams, pandering to competitive players while having terribly designed rules that cause a lot of rules-lawyering, arguing at the table and simply feel-bad moments.
>>
>>98511677
TTRPG is probably not the best way of putting it, but I really liked how older rules allowed models to interact with the table and vice-versa. Yeah, that basically boils down to templates, scatter dice, facings, and such. However, there's also stuff like say, the chimera being amphibious because that's how it was designed in-lore, or how the avatar was immune to flame/melta weapons because he's pretty much living magma.

I love that sort of stuff because it feels more like a simulation as opposed to what the game feels like right now where none of that shit really matters -- it feels arcadey and board-gamey.

Not him but I want to go back to the old unit formatting. I hate the AoS style card. I hate how weapons are now card specific instead of modular. I hate that they've removed psychic disciplines and warlord traits. I hate that morale is almost nonexistant when it used to be a big part of the game.

The LoS and cover rules arent that bad are they?
I thought LoS was literally just a laser from your models head to your opponents models, like that seems pretty simple
>>
>>98511245
This would be kino as fuck and would save GW money because they'd only have to make about 16 models with two upgrade sprues- one with spikes and one without spikes. Saving them money, and allowing them to charge you a low low price of 175 dollars.

But I think it's a mistake to assume GW would put terrain in a non-"big yearly" box, instead they'll include a helpful online pdf about buying a knight and using it for terrain+the basis of a knights army.

Similar to how the Exodite Waystones are mentioned in pretty much every one of their 21 missions in the dossier but they tell you "lol, go make them yourself or something idk" and then shill you more beast snaggas like the beast snagga boss to "up the difficulty with more npos" or the Orc watchtower from age of sigmar.
>>
>>98511701
NTA but as far as I recall, you have to be able to draw a line from your model's base to both sides of an opposing model's base to be considered in full LoS without cover/obscuring. The base is the only thing that matters as far as I've been told.
>>
>>98511686

Why do people come to the 40k thread and go "ummm sweaty you can just hobby yourself some bretonnians+guardsmen" because I want to buy a box made specifically for that purpose. Not spend 40 dollars on Etsy 3d prints, not buy a printer and make my own, not buy bits and kitbash my own. I want a team specifically for my interest that is made similar to the art instead of a crude approximation with whatever is on hand.
>>
>>98511707
Yeah, also things like the models having characteristics that play into certain things. Even vehicle crews are typically statted to the baseline of the faction they belong to like space marine vehicles having space marine LD values. I feel like that can make other factions easier to understand too because you know what to expect versus modern 40k where stats can vary wildly between units that look very similar.
>>
IF they release nobz as a kill team, doesn't that mean kill team players and 40k players are going to have to fight over the supply of nobz? I think kill team should definitely have its own models but those models shouldn't necessarily be must haves in 40k. GW should really just bite the bullet and dump out a dozen upgrade sprues like they have for csm and sm, it's really "not a whole lot" to make the guardfags stop and eventually you'll grind them down so the only people left wanting are fans of -super niche regiment mentioned here of guys with vaguely aztec names in 2nd edition that never got art of models- and then you've finally quashed the guardoid rebellion.

Every edition of 40k has had its flaws
10th was miserable so it caught alot of shit
11th is a small step in the right direction
I like both personally
KT is definitely shorter and it sounds like its probably the better of the two for what you’re after
>>
>>98511741
>GW isn't going to print shit like this because its super niche
I believe GW in the future will specifically make Bondsmen because knights as an army 'don't work' just as superheavies. It's like how Titanicus as an army would only work if you also included the Secutarii infantry that serve under the princeps. Superheavy focused armies are cool but lacking infantry gimps them.
>>
>>98511717
>>98511748
Nobs should have been the other team in the Exodite box anyway GW is faggots for doing this NPO shit.
>>
>>98511731

>>
>>98511790
I've had people argue and bitch until they were blue in the face over whether his guy is under a template or not. I miss them too, but people can be ridiculous like that. They just aren't worth placing with. Also had people who would position their guys from deepstrike in such a way where they avoid mishap even though it was blatantly against the rules. Ever seen a grown man throw an actual tantrum in the middle of a store with customers all over?
>>
>>98511803
No lol thats a level of cringe I hope to someday experience though
>>
>>98511794
>KT is definitely shorter
The games can be longer than a 40k game in my experience.
>>
>>98511806
Here's a taste of it:
>Tau player deepstrikes his drones
>Central model is right on the corner of my basilisk
>Rules say you have to make a circle around them and if they can't, it's a mishap
>Makes a pacman shape around my basilisk
>Tell him he can't do that
>Starts yelling and stomping his feet, hands balled up into fists, saying that I'm a 'cheating snake'
>Picks up his models and just hangs around the store loudly complaining to other players that I'm a cheater
Same guy also lost too many times with his old, metal SoB army so he opened his giant tupperware container one day and said 'take whatever you want I'm done with them'. Got my karskin back.
>>
>>98511810
A KT game where both players don't know their rules well can take longer than a 40k game where both players do, yes. But let's not pretend people can't stretch a 40k game out to like 5+ hours when they're shooting the shit or still learning
>>
>>98511810
Both can be long or short depending on the expertise of both players
KT is generally quicker though
Sometimes both sides only have 5-6 models to deal with
Two people playing horde teams taking slow turns can take a long time though

>me playing SoB, him playing Salamanders in a "casual" game at my house
By "casual" I mean "I brought units I had already, and he went out and bought a tourney-winning roster he copied off of reddit to 'see how it plays.'"
>tries to deepstrike his assault terminators into a tiny triangular spot in my backline where my units have moved forward
>I point out that he can't fit his whole squad (with math on the area of the triangle), he ignores me and INSISTS he can make them fit
>spends 5 minutes trying to fit them after that, catch him nudging one of my models when I'm coming back from the bathroom from the wait

i'm no loreior by any stretch, but my perception is the raven guard are generally as cooperative with their successors as they are any other chapter. perhaps it's because heir stocks offset the somewhat historically low raven guard numbers, perhaps it's their tendency towards independent tactics and strategic flexibility, but they treat most chapters as worthy allies as long as they are loyal, codex compliant or no

Take any space marine chapter, and imagine that everything in their lore has a coin-toss chance of having the chapter's noun or adjective of choice showing up as a prefix for any given thing. Now apply that logic to their aesthetic and plastic.
Also because they're basically frat boys they have more latent homoeroticism than Dark Angels, whose primarch's and chapter's names are references to a gay poet and the poem he wrote about being gay, respectively.

In the grand scheme of things, Ultramarines are the most bland of the "Big" marine chapters in terms of theming and aesthetics
>Blood Angels - Sanguinary Guard and stuff for being gaudy vampires, Death Company for being edgy vampires
>Dark Angels - Arthurian knight aesthetic with robes and shit
>Black Templars - Similar knight aesthetic but taken down the Crusader path
>Space Wolves - wolf pelts and dog knots and wolf shit all over
>Grey Knights - another "knight" themed group but with actual knight armor theming
>Salamanders - Marines but flamers and black
>White Scars - Marines but bikes and asian
>Raven Guard - Marines but sneaky and emo
>Imperial Fists - Marines but tanky and autistic
>Iron Hands - Marines but machine and bland

Even Crimson Fists do a better job at being blue marines than Ultramarines. The only thing Ultras have going for them is the greco-roman aesthetic, and that's only recently become a prominent thing with them as they've gotten more faction specific models.

Devastators have grav cannons, multi meltas, and plasma cannons, which havocs don't have. They also have more sergeant options on the sprue. It's actually surprising how much space is wasted on the havoc sprue. They have less weapon options despite having the chainguns and auto cannons.
>>
>>98512236
is that not just a horus heresy vindicator? or maybe gladiator lancer equivalent? pretty sure it's smaller than an impulsor let alone a repulsor and doesn't have transport capacity.

it's an okay looking tank, though.

Nah vindicators exist as is in 30k, though there's the laser destroyer variant which is cool. Sicarans are a battle tank chassis that sits between the rhino and land raider chassis. They carry bigger weapons though a lot more limited. They are more expensive but faster though have no transport capacity.
>>

Dude it's nuts I was comparing the kit out of curiosity, the sergeant gets 3 kinds of pistols, storm bolter, regular bolter, all types of combi-bolter, all possible melee weapons (all 6 of em) and the option for a pointing bionic arm. Oh and devastators not only have more heavy weapon options, but a cherub. The havoc kit is honestly insanely mogged by this ancient fucking kit. Look how much space is here, and then go look at how clustered the devastators are.
>>
>>98512357
It is pretty dumb. At thsi point I think this kinda unit should just get 2 kits with the weapons split between them so that each kit can build a squad with a full loadout. Wouldn't really change much for GW if they are smart with the sprues as the body sprue could be the same in both and the weapon sprues duplicated for a total of just 3 sprues.
>>
>>98511497
I wanted to make it look like an enlarged Astartes head because despite being TS I'm not big on the bird head daemon prince look. So I took the normal demon head that had a helmet, carved it up, added a grill from an armiger for the front helmet vent, and then just added some TS back pieces to decorate the helmet. I added the wavy sorcerer tassels, the sorcerer chest piece to the center, and changed his axe to a staff.

>>98512339
Sisters have exactly 1 of each
>actual tank (with 2 main gun options, neither are good against other vehicles)
>transport (it's just a rhino)
>artillery vehicle (it has very little range so it doesn't get much out of indirect fire)
>transport/tank hybrid (actually really good and has a unique rule that counters its half capacity limitation)
Expanding the SoB roster (more anti-tank options especially) would greatly help the faction, but then it'd open up to being "SMs but women" or "guard but overtly religious" for complaints, so I don't know how it could reasonably be done to still retain the faction identity.
>>98512366
Anon, the Leman Russ comes with 2 top half sprues in the same box because they combined the two old kits into one. You're left over with 1/2 a tank every time you buy one, and your only way to fix that is to buy a duplicate of the track sprue from ebay or printing the equivalent of that.
GW would rather you buy 2 of the bigger box than sell 2 smaller boxes of what you actually want.
>>98512377
Something like a HH Cerberus would do wonders for Sisters. Replace the HH unique weapon with a bespoke anti-armor gun (or just duplicate the one from the Gladiator Lancer for it) and boom you're done.
>>
>>98512393
But the leman russ comes with every single option. The issue with havocs/devastators/retributors is that they only come with 2 of each gun because they can't fit all of them. If they split the weapons into two sprues there's space for another 2 of every gun.

I hold my tongue most times but it annoys me immensely to hear the white scars player at my LGS constantly bemoaning "his faction" being neglected while I am running Grey Knights and DEldar models across the table. Yea...
Regular Battle Sisters can bring a multi-melta, there isn't one in the box at all. You can make one by taking the heavy flamer, chopping off its barrels, cutting barrels off of 2 of the meltas in the box (it can be built into Dominions instead who can bring 4 special weapons and no heavy), and attaching those melta barrels to the heavy flamer. Or you cannibalize a Retributor squad box for it.

My wishlist:

1. Bikes. You can make them churchy and ostentatious to fit the aesthetic, and they would fill a gap in the sob roaster which is a non-vehicle non-jump infantry that moves fast.

2. A weapon, anywhere on anything, that is higher than s10. The castigator main cannon is s10 and the penitent buzzsaw is melee s10. That's it. Everything else is s8 melta with 12 or 18 inch range. Just give the book anything higher than s10. Make a living saint that shoots a fire bolt, make a third castigator main weapon option that is a "melta lance" or something silly that fits in the theme of no lascannons. Lots of people don't get how bad it feels to live in a world of vehicle skew armies and literally not even be able to field s11 or above, and if you want s10 there's only 1 ranged option.

3. More detachments. It's wild looking at marine's 23 options when sob have literally one option for Purge and it's penitent which requires specific models not everyone collects, or only one option for Recon and it's a 1dp one that only cares about certain units, etc. Several factions are hurting for detachment options and it's totally unnecessary, they can just write more at any time if they want.

4. A way to get more Leadership 5. It's crazy that every single generic chaplain comes with LD5 by default, while the deeply fanatical zealot army who WANT to die in battle can't field LD5 at all without taking the Orators detachment combined with specifically some named characters and dogmatas. It's crazy that Canoness and Palanrines are LD7 and even Vahl is 6. Meanwhile marines can just slap any generic chaplain in a unit for ld5, who is of course t4 with a good weapon and other special rules on top of that, for a similar cost too lmao or cheaper than the characters.

5. Vahl isn't mandatory anymore. No codex should have this kind of situation where there's only one actually good unit and you see it in almost 100% of lists, it's just lame. Make Freye or someone else as good so you choose
>>
>>98512418
I know that. I've been in this hobby long enough to recognize the patterns and I'm generally content with the models I do have (most of my gripes are with rules and legends units). It's just silly to pretend like every new marine release isn't something usable for his army just because he likes the bike aspect of white scars. Like he has brand new van vets and a speeder he just painted up. The choice to treat white scars as being all about bikes is purely his prerogative, but that doesn't mean that's ALL his faction is. It would be like me complaining DE never get anything from GW because they updated the whole Kabal range and I like to play Covens.
>>
>>98512412
the fundamental problem is it's a big model that does something a bunch of units can already do for free. first turn deep strike isn't that useful given how cramped boards are, and infiltrators exist. terminators, jump intercessors and reivers can all deep strike for free, and the latter doesn't cost much more than a pod. even the drop pod detachment ended up making them less useful as it let you apply deep strike to literally anything. bonuses to disembarking a pod would have to be huge to matter at all.
>>
>>98512412
alpha strikes make the game unfun
the more viable drop pods get the more people spam them, and the more that happens the more people whine about the price of having to get multiple of them for their entire army to stay in the meta
one solution would be to make their point cost rise exponentially the more people want to use them, but at that point you might as well put a hard cap of 2 pods per a certain amount of points, but then people would whine about the fact that their dream of a marine army fully deployed via pods isn't available
even though alpha strikes are unfun and they don't want to pay for that many drop pods
the solution is making one specific detachment that gives you 2 pods for free per 1k points, and the rest of the army is "deployed via drop pods", but only on paper, while in practice they deploy from any battlefield edge, since tables are so small now

People will say that GW does not use rules to sell models and while I don't think they do it on purpose nearly as often as people attribute to them, they definitely have in the past and we have some confirmed examples. Like when the rules designers were told to leave the wraithknight as a monster instead of a vehicle on release because it would sell better that way.
It's also probably not a coincidence that every 500 worlds/Maelstrom/etc release had crazy pushed rules that fucked the balance of 10th for each new model drop, though most of those got patched quickly.
>>
>>98512543
Scouts should have 1 wound and no free teleport back to reserves ability.
>>
So after basic Space Marines all go to T5, what all weapons in your army are going to need to get their stats inflated to keep up?
>>
>>98512563
My reasoning is that the special round rules essentially gave you a a three man scout team that could do most of what normal scouts did while being WAY more survivable (and easier to assemble and paint). So someone at GW said "fuck these guys, we have new $90 scout models to sell.

Sisters need an actual anti-tank option, preferably one that's ranged. Melta spam on dominions/retributors doesn't cut it, Morvenn and paragon suits should NOT be the only real option. Either give the Castigator a third gun, or give Sisters a bespoke "tank destroyer" vehicle.

It feels like it shouldn't because it's a siege cannon, but looking at it again yea it has great anti-vehicle stats.
Still only 2 feet of range though. I get that SoB want to be up close for flamers and meltas and melee, but having a specific long range "kill that thing NOW" unit would be nice as well to go alongside the Castigator. Some of that desire is me wanting to default to my guard-playing ways of camping distance, of course.

I guess giving them the Vindicator would probably solve a lot of this anti-vehicle issue, assuming it doesn't just become everyone's new "kill that first" target like Morvenn currently is. That would then be solved by giving more than 1 option, so we'd be back to the drawing board ad infinitum on "but what ifs."

Orks most definitely outnumber human soldiers, but they are unlikely to outnumber human civilians because hive worlds push those numbers to unbelievable heights and orks don't really have similar intensive farms for their own selves.
But it's very likely that orks control more planets or larger overall areas of the galaxy.
You've got to understand that the imperium does not control the galaxy by controlling every single planet in it, or even the majority of the planets in it, or even every planet within a specific border; their planets are dots in a sea, connected by stable warp routes that make logistics feasible and allow for such planets to call for reinforcements and extend their military power lightyears away to squash threats.
ork areas are likely not fully populated by orks, but orks don't have similar pressures as the imperium to keep a galxy-wide empire up and running, so their spread can be less focused on efficiency and more focused on just grabbing as much as they can regardless of logistics or whether it's practical or needed.

I think the Crusaders got removed from the guard list (I am not sure if they're back in 11th) because the crusaders were resin and just weren't seen as good alternatives to the bullgryns as melee guard units because they didn't aesthetically fit the guard visually and the bullgryns were just overall better stat wise and looking better too.

The Vindicator would fit with the "traditional" SoB playstyle as-is, but then that leaves the Castigator out to dry as the ONLY unit that can even be considered long range, and then why even include it in the list? Just to take advantage of Rapid Fire 4 on the autocannons at the same distance as a Vindicator?
For the Castigator to have a place, Sisters need a longer range vehicle besides it. If the Vindicator were to be dropped in, it'd just replace the Castigator. Ideally, both would have a place.
>inb4 Exorcist
It has a range of 36 inches for its indirect fire missiles. I wouldn't call that "long range," because it's 1 foot inside of either of the Castigator main guns' range.
The Castigator is out of place with or without the addition of the Vindicator, my point is trying to both strengthen the SoB roster (in quality and quantity) and make it more coherent.

The only terrain I have are some sci-fi houses that are bigger than the official footprints and some scatter terrain. How much would using them fuck up the game?

Terrain layouts are essentially the primary determining factor of the outcome of the game (second only to the skill level of the players)
It sounds like youre relatively new though so just do whatever you want man
Theres no need to care that much about competitive balance as a new player
Its way more fun to just fuck around and run scenarios with friends
That competitive tournament shit is gay anyways

if you deviate from prescribed standards by so much as a millimeter no matter the venue you're playing in, gw will have you assassinated

Castigator still has a beneficial niche with Rites so I don't see it being removed from lists if the Vindicator became a thing.

The reason I ask is in some games minor seeming things can be way more important than they first seem and this is a pretty sizable increase in the size of objectives.

I wouldnt worry about it
Just have fun with your buds my dude
Thats what its all about after all

I really hope they redo them. The idea of 5, let alone 10 marines fitting into that thing is crazy to me. Sisters of battle? Cramped but it'd work. Even old chaos marines seem like they'd crouch down the entire time and fit maybe 3. Do an astartes sized rhino and you can keep the old chassis for other armies' tanks like the exorcist. Just say they scale the STC's or something.

Legend, cheers

I don't believe 10 marines can fit in a rhino. 10 guardsmen? Sure. Rhinos are 6 dudes only for me.

What's also crazy is that rhinos and land raiders are supposed to have the same transport capacity of 10.

The layouts provide quick reference to have somewhat balanced boards. If you're a new player you don't have the experience to do this on your own so following the layouts will help. If you're an experienced player you'll have a feel for how much terrain you need and how to scatter it so the game is balanced. They are not mandatory but they help.

TQ suggestions?

Even if they remake it it's not gonna be any bigger simply for gameplay purposes.
>>
>>98513238
Actually they both hold 12 now. Land raiders just also can have terminators.
>>
>>98513183
Fair enough, I didn't really consider Rites when I was thinking about it.
Still kind of sucks to spend 165 points on a vehicle that doesn't really mesh with the rest of your army JUST for an AP-1 buff to every subsequent attack to whatever it hit. There are a good few units in other armies that do much more than that at comparable and lower point costs (Leman Russ Vanquisher, Rogal Dorn, Gladiator Lancer, Predator variants that are the same model as the Castigator but have better guns) that nearly always mesh well into their rosters.

Pretty much all vehicles on the tabletop are sized down purely for gameplay purposes.
Rhinos in reality are much larger than people think they are, but GW doesn't make full size ones because the larger model would cost more, but also lot of GW stuff is due to the amount of sprues, larger kit requires more sprues/larger sprues, and larger sprues/more sprues you have, bigger the box needs to be, larger box less you can fit them on a pallet and less of them you can fit inside a container.
Also making model that'd proportionally accurate would also make the game more cumbersome, the game boards are already pretty small, you don't want to make the problem worse by making the models larger which eats up more board space

Also when it comes to vehicles, sisters don't need the ap they need strength. AP is irrelevant when you're shooting your only other anti tank option (meltas) so it's basically just to stack buffs with multiple castigators and maybe exorcists.

What data sheet needs the biggest glow up with your next codex?
>>
>>98513262
Still insane for 12 marines to fit in a rhino and it having the same capacity as a LR.
>>
>>98513245
My question was less about the layouts and more about the specific sizes of the footprints in 11th.
>>
>>98513283
Also not terribly mandatory but they provide enough variety in size, shape and type between light and heavy terrain.
>>
>>98513164
As long as you keep terrain that blocks line of sight symmetrical and not advantaging one player over the other it doesn't matter and GW's rules say just do whatever. The terrain on the official layouts is just for the set that comes in the intro set, it's not the only permitted stuff.

Having terrain features larger than the footprints is fine, although ideally you wouldn't remove too much of the standing area for models to contest the quite large objective areas.

The extra size in the land raider is armour and guns.

Lore is not real. Only plastic is real.
>>
>>98513275
Rites doesn't stack with itself afaik, and the Exorcist has s10ap-3 rockets, so it's not benefiting from Rites either.

I miss my landraider. I need to make something with my dark angels to give me a reason to buy one.

>>98513260
>>98513274
Very true. I understand the gameplay reason but it's still awkward to see.
>>
>>98513260
It's smaller than existing 7 man transports let alone the 12s, it's small because it's old not because gameplay requires it to be.

These responses tell me I'm 100% right
