The worst thing an RPG do to kill interest in it is get political. Take Eclipse Phase for example. It went overtly political and made the factions analogous to modern politics, and now people go into it instantly deciding what they like based on what their current politics are.Warhammer 40k on the other hand does this much better. The factions hold no relation to modern politics, there are conservative and liberal reasons to like every faction so anyone can like any faction.

>>98509341But that doesn’t mean it’s analogous to real world politics
>>98509440The thing about real world politics is that it's so large and so all-consuming that any basic political premise can be considered an analogy to _something_.

>>98509341daily reminder that "politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed," that whether or not a work has themes or has characters or has characters that interact all have very little to do with whether the work is "political," and that what is required for a work to be "political" is for its creation to assert power over another actual person in some way.this means that roughly four things you can do with media are political:(1) in a circumstance where there is a community based on using or participating in the work (common with "fandoms," TTRPGs, etc.), making massive changes to the fundamental assumptions the work is based on, with the deliberate intention of trying to hold people's friendships in the community hostage if they don't eat the shit you're pushing. "Second Edition of [popular participatory media] introduces prominent themes that are deliberately distasteful, which were not in First Edition" is probably political, "First Edition has identical themes" probably isn't.(2) "no refunds" -- bait-and-switching people you don't like in order to take their money and thereby bleed them a bit.(3) making media that challenges the power of a censorship authority (whether a formal one or otherwise) by skirting the line with juuust enough plausible deniability that they look weak and ignorable if they let it through, and/or look like deranged fanatics if they bring the hammer down. "Everybody Draw Mohammed" is certainly political.(4) making an open and obvious show of bending the knee to that same authority, Havel's Greengrocer style, with the opposite intent.these are fairly narrow cases, most things do not in fact meet them, and they map pretty closely to what people actually do bitch about.
