The weekend can't be over! I've only painted one Space Marine!>rough print>desk lamp broke>sable brushes misbehaving>matte varnish decided to be extra glossy>don't like how it looks against the bases I prepared for the model>decided it wasn't worth using good paints on, so cheap paints took 3x as many coats>took me months to paint because ???
Witch elf anon pls post group pic of all of them.
>>98519826>>98519596Yeah they're some old metal sisters im adding to my all metal army(except my seraphim are resin casts).I also have a Penitent Engine i have to suffer through.
I have a bunch of meganobz and a warboss to paint and I want to capture this kind of vibe with the paint scheme but I can't find any references of people doing mostly metallic MANZAnyone have any suggestions or reference images?Should I do 2 different shades of metals to break it up? I was thinking about doing brown with dry brushed metal for super rusted parts and then more standard metallics for weaponsWill it end up looking a bit shit? I like full metallic Chaos Warriors but they have shitloads of detail whereas MANZ have lots of flat panels.
Finally getting some base coats down on this guy. Any advice before I get too far? I haven't painted in like 6 months or more.
Painting Thousand sons.A wise man told me once, if you want to enter competitions of painting, always do what you know what to do best. No new stuff. So it’s practice time.
The shield turned out surprisingly okay
>>98520465Are you the guy with the black legion models with all the freehand?
>>98520475No.
>>98520099Yeah, that looks like ass, why use shit paint when this is the result?
>>98520425Single foot category?
I just bought this cloud giantess and im kinda fretting about what skin color to paint her. Should I just go with standard sky blue skin/storm gray hair or should I do something different?
>3D print some kroxigors>prime them >after a few tries, find a color scheme you're happy with>models are turning out pretty nice, ready to be finished the following day, maybe post some pics on /wip/>box containing said miniatures falls to the ground and they desintegrate in a million piecesI'd honestly recommend not skipping a single one of these steps if you wanna feel overjoyed with fun feelings
>>98520551Yeh, something like that.I am tidying it up and working on the other. Then the tabbard. I need to dig in back into the thousand sons for the main mini that I want to paint.
>>98520549I don't think the low quality paints or the 3 dollar brush with a hooked tip are the only reason the end result is shit
Tried to marathon through this lictor tonight. Got this far.
>>98520630looks great anonthe stripes are really doing it for me
>>98520591sounds like a bad choice of resin
I kept going and think it's starting to come together. Going to dry brush bone white on the bones to brighten things back up
>>98520623Ye I think the fdm print is the main culprit here.
>>98520630beector

>>98520760God damn that edge work is clean. They look like physical animation characters.
>>98520760Nice
>>98520563>standard sky blue skinI dunno about you, but mine is pinkish beige.
As a new painter, is it normal to really struggle with seeing the tip of my brush and how far it is from the model? My eyesight isn't the best to begin with but I feel like I'm almost painting blind sometimes
>>98520970Do you have a good light source? Makes a massive difference, doesn't need to be some gay $300 redgrass slop, but you need a light source
>>98520970Might wanna get some form of magnification. I have a desk lamp with a built in magnifying glass.
>>98520760lovely, clean work!
>>98520970As 36 years old, I pick generic +1.5 glasses only for painting. With tiny details like that, it's completely justified. Also, as >>98520988 pointed out, proper amount of light is crucial. I recommend some neutral/cold light bulbs, 2 with 1100 and above lumens, preferably more. Most "desk lamps" with built-in LEDs give pitful 500 lums or less, which is comple crap.

>>98520799The filters on modern cameras are amazing, huh.
First time using My modular magnetic tiles at the table for an improvised Session Dragonbane. Not Sure If i could call them finished. Maybe i want nore Tufts on them but there would be less space for minis
>>98521102Someone's salty
>>98521102I only change iso and shutter speed, it's all about proper lighting.

>>98521125Yep, there's a reason you say "Lights, camera, action!" in that order.
>>98521216but how did you take the picturespoopy
>>98521216NTA but I still wonder if it would make more sense to shoot with long focal length (200mm telephoto) from distance or 60mm macro lens from up close. Assuming same f/16 aperture.
>>98521224>>98521216WTF
>>98521216I shot some of my minis for fun the other day with my Nikon Zf using the 35mm 1.4 lens. I thought "I want everything in focus, so I'll set it to f 5.6", but that wasn't enough for minis hehe. I rarely go higher for what I normally shoot (people).I'm not used to shooting tiny stuff like that. I don't have a macro lens either, but cameras are so good these days you can crop in how you want.I'll use my 50mm 1.8 and try f16 like you next time and get the whole thing in focus. I used the 35mm because I had a few minis lined up for a "wide" group shot.
>>98521226I think it mostly comes down to personal taste, but I think a macro lens around 100mm is the sweet spot for "proper" macro. That's at least what I hear, but again it's all about personal preference
>>98521110that looks like a perfect amount of tuffs, you need to keep it playable
Any good tips for taking pictures of whole armies? There's plenty online for pictures of miniatures and I'm mostly fine taking pictures of units. But when I want to picture the whole army I'm always at a loss

I started on my next batch. The 4 dwarfs with shields are the last models i have left unpainted from all the 7th ed starter sets I have accrued in the 20 years since its release. The other dwarfs are EM4 sculpts. Simple enough that I felt like increasing the batch size from 12 to 16 wasn't too big of a deal.

>>98520425>So it’s practice time.Anon, Rusty Nurgling is THIS WEEKEND! You need to practice a lot faster than that!

>>98521910I want to do jungle bases though
>>98522036Add sticks, rocks, moss, and aquarium plants. Use vallejo mud paste (it has little twiggy bits in it) and some kind of water texture paste to add puddles. If I want to search for minis/bits for Gasland conversions, which scale should I look for? Not sure what scale toy cars are. Also, in which thread should I ask for Gasland-related questions?
>>985224771/64
>>98522498Thanks.Also, when modelling with toy cars, should I prime them directly, or should I strip them first? And if so, how? Not sure if regular paint strippers will damage the mini.
1 Steel Legion done...a whole bunch more to go...
>>98522247Beautiful
>>98522907Looks brilliant, well done anon.I'm so sad they didn't do new Steel Legions with the Armageddon set. But they kinda went out of their way to say "hey you can pain Death Korps as Steel Legion!" (which does look cool, but they aren't Steel Legion)
>>98522907he... he has seen things hasn't he

Another model painted. I've done pretty well this month
>>98523627winsor's been shit for years. Raphael 8404 is what I'd recommend.
>>98519702>How so? It's just sort of wash or you thinned it, wiped it and use it as glaze. How is this high skill ceiling?Bit late and nta but at a base, newish level contrasts are simple. To clean it up and push them to what they can actually achieve there's a billion little tricks, techniques and small little things.Due to their wash/oil like composition and transparency that means each paint behaves differently and interacts differently with both previous coats AND future coats while interacting very different depending on the surface, in addition to being a wash like paint means you can also use them as such with the proper thinning. Then you add stuff like contrast medium into the equation and it can get quite overwhelming, it's not something you know or learn until you start getting into the endless pit that is contrast paints. All this is barely scratching the surface and while these things exist, mostly, in regular paints, contrasts take it to 11 due to their translucent nature and their mixing and end result with past/future coats behaving completely different than a regular paint so not only you need to know for certain how each color interacts with different primer colors, but how it behaves with MANY other colors beyond the primer for proper shading.
please yell at me like the retard i am about how shitty my painting skills are for a newb.or the order that i am painting things at.what do you use for fire burnished metals? the color isnt right, i know that. i have no clue on a metalic blue for around the holes of the exhaust stacks
>>98524079bruh worry less about your painting and more about your assembly. that turret looks all kinds of fucked up.
>>98524079from least intense heat to most yellow wash, red wash, purple wash, black. duncan has a good video on this that you can do with citadel paints.

anyone know where I can find print-off decals for like, piles of posters that would be plastering a wall in a dystopian cyberpunk city? I looked for a good while and couldn't find any. Wanted to spice up some homemade terrain
>>98524079rainbow metal is a meme. it's only apparent on certain types of metal with certain finishes. realistically you wouldn't see it on something like a tank or a flamethrower. if you're just doing it because you want to be in on the meme too then there's no reason to be concerned about what it "should" look like.

Tonight's progress. I'm thinking of finishing it off with some of those neon colored alien tufts for the base.
>>98524992Really nice. The gamer grass alien vegetation goes nicely with those.
>>98524981oh damn you're right, why didn't I think of that
>>98523627I had trouble like that with winsors from dickblick, all in a glass case, each one was like that, but I ordered from amazon and they arrived in a tube with protector and no problems with any of those.
Why are you guys still using winsor newton? Russian, chink, jap and korea kolinsky brushes are all much cheaper, and with better quality control too
>>98520813this one was the usual, shitty hotglued plastic cage, one part silicone mold into the pressure pot, and casted with polyurethane resin in the pot tooi added some vents for the arms and under the chin, picrel is that first cast (wich also ripped a bit of silicone because poor cutting)from my very limited experience (i just started doing this last week) a pressure pot is a must have, but so far i have been surprised with how good the results are and how easy it is, i expected a lot more problems with partial casts, bubbles and stuffalso white resin is shit ti see any detail, i might get some dye in the future

>>98525477I still think these are kinda low effort despite you saying you do a thousand coats and stuffit just seem like a blue basecoat, some lining and somewhat sloppy highlighting here and there
Finished these 3.Found them in a box of old unloved minis and just wanted to practice some techniques on them. Overall, I think they look fairly effective and would make a decent looking 1490 Doom warband so I've tried to make them look like they are in that desaturated world.
>>98525477Thank god you fixed that face
Picked up some hobby supplies from a gundam shop, didn't clarify I was using acrylic paints and bought this lacquer based thinner - is it completely useless to me or can I still use it for thinning acrylics in my airbrush?
>>98525387Thank you, I'm on a Nurgle tangent these days. Next week I'm gonna start Trench Crusade with my brother, hopefully rules aren't too shitty because I like the designs. The mini situation is weird though.
>>98525741Depends on acrylics in question. In general, if you try to add lacquer thinner to waterbased acrylics, they would most likely rubberize or otherwise react badly. However, Tamiya acrylics are explicitly stated to be compatible with Tamiya own lacquer thinner. What kind of acrylics you talk about?
>>98525186You're aware you could just 3D print that stuff right?
>>98525865NTA but since when everyone have resin 3D printer in their basement (assuming they even have basement)?
>>98525882That's not everyone that's someone who's making silicone molds of minis with a pressure pot, what I assume is an air pump and cast resin in those to make copies of old minis, which takes infinitely more effort, time and money than just buying a $180 printer and printing those. Especially at scale.
>>98525741I mixed vallejo with mr color leveling thinner a couple of times and it worked good and made them spray almost like lacquers, but you'd probably need to test each paint individually in a separate mixing tray before spraying to see whether it gunks up or notBut tbqh I dont really see much worth in a non levelling thinner besides using it as a tool cleaner
>>98525928i duno if you know about this anon, but you can do things for fun. not because its efficient or practical but just because its fun to do. these fun activities are often called hobbies, as you can gain a neat skill while you do them.collecting stls is not a hobby for instance.
>>98525950There's no skill in doing any of that. Funnily enough learning how to use blender will land you a job though. But it's a retarded argument in the first place. The hobby is Traditional Games.
>>98525964>learning how to use blender will land you a joblollmao even
>>98525964fucking americans. every time. "did you know you can make money off this? make your boss happy?" like theres no other reason to do anything. and casting is way more traditional games then blender you retard. go huff some resin fumes
>>98525865>>98525928we already had this conversation, i'm perfectly aware, i even own 3dprinted resin models and a fdm printer, i don't want a resin 3d printeri don't plan on doing this at scale or at all for models, that was just a quick test for leftover resini'm getting into this because i want to recast the terrain, and yes i know i can also 3dprint that, but i don't want to, i can't (and don't want to learn) 3dmodel them as well as i can handcraft them and i don't want to fight with layer lines and limited detail, it's also way less fun to 3dprint everythingbtw, i'm using the airbrush compressor for now
>>98525978i came in way to hot here, but theres this attitude among zoomers/alphas that makes me genuinely sad. the economy is so fucked, so few of them consider doing things for fun. everything is a side hustle. everything has to have value or be able to win money from. you got to film it and monetize it and get sponsors. I cant wait for professional bird watching tournaments.
>>98525964making molds and casts is more of a skill than downloading some scan from telegram and 3dprinting it wich is most people with 3dprinters, if you sculpt your own shit sure thats a good skill to have but don't want to, i know enough 3dmodeling to get around i don't want to also get into sculpting>will land you a job i don't want another job, i already have one, i don't want to monetize every single minute of my life, what kind of brainrot is that>The hobby is Traditional Games.>Thethere's only one hobby? is there a hobby police too?
>>98525978You're the one who talked about learning a so called skill you retard, therefore I was pointing out that the process of 3D printing can also teach you skills and that they're objectively more valued. Now stop making me spell out the obvious for you, retard, you have the reading comprehension of a 5yo.>>98525983That makes more sense, terrain is a different beast since it's usually way bigger and the bigger resin 3D printer cost quite a bit of money.
>>98526028
>>98525584They're 4/10 paint jobs with a couple of details that suggest he could achieve a 6/10 if he wasn't so lazy and painted the whole thing.

>>98526119copper needs a whole bunch of shading and weathering and I'd add a bunch of rust to steel parts but otherwise looks sick
>>98526119Needs more grime and some oxidation on the bronze metalsMost time I ever spent on 1 model was this guy from Kingdom Death. I didnt track how many hours exactly I spent on it, and it was nowhere near what some insane people put into individual models, but by the end of it I was sick of it and I've been doing squad/army painting for a while lol

>>98526166Thank you. I was happy with my results but I can see a lot of areas that could be improved with some more time. Its a skill in painting to know when to stop and be satisfied.Try looking at real oxidized metals to get an idea of where to place your oxidation

>>98525186>a pressure pot is a must haveNice to have, but not a must have. Smooth-On's directions for how to make the mold without one do work if you're careful. And if you're reproducing old OOP stuff, scans can usually be found but most of them aren't quite right. A properly done mold is going to give you something indistinguishable from the real thing. >>98527087I compete with everyone else on /wip/ but in my head
>>98526423>>98527053Additionally - if you can find them - Forge World made large-scale models and busts of personalities and units from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I used to have the big resin Blood Angel Death Company model... would love to have that one back.
My airbrush stops shooting paint even if I'm holding down the trigger in the exact same position - so it shouldn't be paint drying in the nozzle as there is paint continuously flowing through the nozzle Anyone have any idea whats wrong? Is the trigger itself fucked?

Method 2>quickly slather on just a fucking heap of primer in a few seconds, then blow as hard as you can, blasting off any excess pooling. This makes a perfect prime you’d swear came from an airbrush, but it means you have to go outside. >>98530037I bought the game and some expansions about 4/5 years ago. Played with friends for a bit but then circumstances separated us(jobs, etc)
I got the base coat done for my Aggressors and Bladeguard. I think Liquitex Basic acrylics are just not designed for airbrushes. They're thicker than hobby paints, but even when thinning them down, it gunked up the airbrush after just 5 models. Fortunately I was only doing 6. And when I went to clean it, there was paint everywhere that just would not come off easy. Normally just a few rinses with water and cleaner will clear it out, but this thick shit just sticks to everything. I damn near needed to soak the entire airbrush in IPA to get it out. Just sucks that it's the right color for me.
Here's an update on my Ogor Tyrant, I added the skin. I'm not the best at painting eyes still, it's way too hard for me.
>>98526153For the most part this is excellent, the scratches on the blade are maybe a little too regular towards the cross guard, but the big thing that confuses me is having a wooden cross guard and pommel. I'm not sure if you thought it would be too much gold, but I don't think it would fight too much with the helm, pauldrons, and decorations, and it makes the sword look unbalanced because of how wide the blade is and how light wood is compared to metal, especially gold. Another issue is the contrast on the half-cape is much weaker than the arm ruffles - both are ostensibly cloth but one would expect the shadows on the much lower cape to be significantly deeper; instead it appears to be almost a single shade of purple in comparison to the variety of greens on the arms.

>>98532089I added a third color and it instantly looks better in my opinion!Still working on it though of course
>>98532025>>98531507My advice? Actually cut at the transition point where it becomes spectral, so you can paint the interior surface of the tangible stonework. That way you can't see "inside" of it by looking at the wrong angle.
What magnet grades do you lads use for your miniatures when magnetizing the base?
>>98530642Thanks for the advice. The sword pommel being wood was a choice because the knight in game has a nature theme and the sculpt looks like it has a woody textureAnd the cape was low effort. It was a separate piece from the main body and by the time I got to it I was kinda in the mindset to just get it done. The shadows look a bit stronger in person, but it could definitely use more work. I also mixed in a bit of dark purple for the shadow for the green, giving it a stronger contrast, but using the same dark purple on the cap obviously doesnt create the same effect
Is buying bases with ready made magnets and slots worth it? I'm looking at getting some from cobalt keep.
>>98532161It does make magnetising your bases a lot easier, you don't need to faff around nearly as much as you have to do normally.

>>98532089>>98532120The problem is that there's not enough contrast. Look at the thumbnail, it's just green. Camo is a disruptive thing, it's supposed to break the silhouette.

WIP, not finished. Tried a few things on this model so I could figure out the rest of the squad.
>>98536228Really good for contrast
>>98532917No way you can get the colour with contrast you get with inkYou are delusional
>>98532545I've made contrast when they came out, if I remember it was a matt medium with a tiny bit of thinner and the colour was just from inksCame out exactly the same, but not a fan of contrast
>>98537288Contrasts are well known for their vibrancy (some might say infamous).
Want to do kind of freaky vivid green skin for my orks but the only green paint I own is Warp Lightning contrastThis is it painted over a a brown up into bone coloured preshade, but I have other areas where the preshade kind of failed completely & it's just flat green.Any ideas what can I do to this to make it look a bit more organic/like actual skin and what colour tone I can mix Warp Lightning with for highlights and shadows
>>98537309>Any ideas what can I do to this to make it look a bit more organic/like actual skinyes, it's called layering (and blending)
>>98537309Add some reddish-pinkish tones to the skin in select spots, this adds a lot of liveliness to greenskins.
>>98537309Maybe try Warp Lightning over yellow.Making it look like skin is hard, because there's not a lot of green skinned animals around (most of them have scales) to reference.
>>98537309skin is a bit translucent, you can use different colors for shadows not just green, maybe add purple or bluish shadows, fleshy parts like >>98537329 says are also fine but not everyone likes that look
What with the contrast hate? They are very good for basecoat, glaze and wash
>>98537573Awful for basecoat, not very good for gazing but as thicker wash they work pretty good. For making shadows on white clothes they are indeed quite nice, black and dark gray ones are also useful, over silver they make interesting effects but their use is limited compared to actual paints. Definitely not "one click wonder" they were advertised as.
>>98537648>Definitely not "one click wonder" they were advertised as.I'm salty to this day that I fell for this shit when I was returning to the hobby a couple years ago
>>98536228Is this with the chinkshit contrast? Pretty good
>>98537648>not very good for gazing Why?
