I am in need of a good light for painting given my new place has shit lighting. Anyone have any particular favorites for lamps or other lightning? I've never been in this situation before so I'm not sure what the go-tos as far as types or brands go.

finished a tactical, despoiler, and command squad form my 30k Emperors Children today

thinking about doing a renegades army using the old 7th ed FW renegades and heretic list, current idea is a dark mechanicus affiliated tzeentch army, probably fairly heavy on mechanized infantry and maybe eventually a baneblade variant or convert up something as a brass scorpion as a centerpiece
as far as models go i dont really want to get too chaosified or mutated, anyone have good ideas for infantry? Not a huge fan of the existing renegade models as they're too spiky and ragtag for my taste.
It'll probably end up being cadians/kasrkins because they're fairly simple to clean up, though one thing i would like is for my basic dudes to have autoguns and the vet equivs to have lasguns, but thats easily doable i think

If your airbrush looks like what you posted then there's no getting around it, you have to disassemble your airbrush and place it some IPA for a while and then clean it. You NEED proper tools to get into the channel and end cap of the brush to make sure no dried paint is blocking the flow.

When I airbrush I use cheap q-tips (don't use anything sharp) with some cleaner and I rub the cup if it's stubborn paint, making sure no paint is stuck. Then I spray it out and I run more cleaner after that as many times as I need until it's clean, usually just 1 or 2 more times.

Airbrushing is a learning curve. The one thing you should know is that there is no recipes you can just blindly follow for everyhing, like mixing 80/20 thinner-flow improver. I don't do that anymore, today I just use thinner and my own eye sight. You need to learn to SEE how the paint flows, not follow recipes.

What airbrush do you have specifically? Because every airbrush is different. I struggled with tip drying on my H&S ultra 2024 for a while and I almost went mad, but what they NEVER tell you is how the velocity coming out of the nozzle varies massively from brand to brand. As it turns out my AB has a really high air flow velocity at the pressure I was spraying, so I reduced the PSI to 18-20 PSI and it reduced my tip drying massively. Do not backwash, it serves no purpose other than getting paint around your trigger. You don't want that unless you want a sticky trigger. Get dedicated wells to mix paint and pour it into the cup, because you might mix thick paint somethines and you need to make sure it's properly thinned and flowing

I clean the needle often with paper towel and IPA after the cup is clean after every session, or if needed after I change colours

Use your fingers to remove dried paint on the tip if you're getting blockages, if you have a nozzle like I do then an expendable dry brush with some cleaner should do the trick

It's great that you have someone you can ask, I was gonna recommend that. Ask him to show you where it goes wrong.

Most of the time NMM people are just following patterns rather than actually a coherent reflection of the light. That's not really a criticism, there has to be some flubbing to make it look reflective when it isn't really.

H&S Evolution in fact, also using AK paints but I doubt it really matters. 1.5bar pressure, which roughly translates to 22 PSI but changing pressure was not really changing anything in this behaviour.

That experienced modeller said I do everything correct so really no idea. The only case where I have zero problems with drying paint, dirty internals, etc was when I was spraying Vallejo Metal Color (those 30ml bottles), not even using flow improver, just some of their thinner. Really don't know what to think about it.

I have no idea how you get so much paint stuck in the cup. Anyway you have to reset, disassemble if you haven't already, you will have to learn this sooner or later, and do a deep clean. Reading more of your posts last thread I think you should care less about thinner-paint ratios. Just make the paint thin, as thin as contrast paints or other inks. You need to judge this using your eyes, not follow ratios. When your paint is thin, you need to be aware of other variables like pressure, distance and how much paint you spray at a time. If you're too close to the model you will start spiderwebbing for example. As someone who sprays contrast paints and inks often, you can even thin these ones at even more, but you then you have to airbrush slower than usual. All this is the hard part about ABing, the variables. I went through frustrations as well, but if you just keep at it I'm sure you can make it as well

Just my personal anecdote, but I used to backwash paint all the time to help mix it, and I think it did cause my airbrush to gunk up once or twice. The paint gets behind the needle, and forms a seal that makes it hard to remove without first removing the needling.
99% of the time it was fine though, and you only get the clog if you let the brush sit for a long time without the trigger being pulled (a couple days or more, I think enough time for the paint to cure?).
I don't think it's too much of a big deal though tbdesu, but I might recommend a new painter just avoid getting into the habit.

Backflushing with solvents is fine. With paint, I've done it and I'm not doing it anymore after my trigger got sticky and I had to do a deep clean. Newfag to 40k trying to build my first army and I just got this tank for my birthday, how does this step work? Do I need to place this little cylinder in the front plate first? Or do I glue on the front plate first and THEN put in the cylinder?

Always dry fit and test. Looks like you could go either way. Its telling you not to use glue for the cylinder anyway, you want it held in place by the top plate but still be able to rotate the gun. I'd put the cylinder in, and then try to close it up without gluing just to see if its still movable.

2). Place the front plate over it.

if you don't have caliphers use something of known size, like button cells, coins, or pieces of plasticard in known thicknesses
also remember to leave a bit of clearance for glue, and you don't want the magnet to be exactly flush with the border, a paper thickness deeper is better

My problem with a square tower is that if I want it to be compatible with a corner or fit between two walls, I have to give it three doors/entrances (one on the left side, one on the right side, and one at the back).
But in the end, depending on how I place my walls around the tower, there will be a door that opens onto empty space.
I guess this can be easily remedied by adding a removable staircase to the inner door or a removable balcony to the outer door.
But it requires extra work and extra stroing space up for each towers.

in my country we have this saying "jokainen ei ole seppä syntyessään" and it roughly translates to not everyone has innate talent you just have to work for it

Nmm is not that hard. First you have a primary reflection coming from the sun, bouncing off the object, and entering your eye. Then you have a secondary reflection from the ground/surroundings, where the light from the ground/surroundings bounce off the object and enter your eye. Between then is a dark area, where the light is reflected to some other place than your eye. A reflective metal will barely scatter light at all, so this area will be very dark, even black.

Also the tones of the primary and secondary reflections depend on the surroundings. Usually the primary reflection is cooler and the secondary is warmer.

And do remember that the reflections are where the light bounces to hit your eye. Meaning that the reflections change depending on the angle you view the object. And the very top of the object is not likely to be the part doing the reflecting. Obviously since you can’t paint a moving reflection you have to fudge it a little bit, combine two angles, etc. to give a convincing effect.
You can take a picture of a mini primed with gloss black under bright light to get an idea of where to place highlights

Otherwise that’s pretty much it.

I have one, it’s really good. The boom arm and overall build is very high quality, which is the most important part—a lights a light. I wish they didn’t go with the one button for brightness control cause switching between painting and taking photos means I can never get it quite how it was before. It’s too white though, I have little side lamps to yellow down my workspace, personal preference. The thing can get super bright, enough to illuminate a space that 3 or 4 people can’t paint at nicely for when you have friends over. 4/5 stars. If I knew of any other product that I’d rate higher than 2 stars I’d probably recommend that instead but everything else I’ve seen or tried is shite by comparison.

You don't need to wait until you're a master to practice advanced techniques, practising advanced techniques are what will make you a master.
Like you said, "jokainen ei ole seppä syntyessään", you will never get better at techniques you never practice.
The prerequisite knowledge for NMM is just a basic understanding of layering and glazing, which themselves just need a basic understanding of how to thin paint. You don't need to practice for years to have the skills to try NMM, most people will be able to get started much earlier than they expect.

the more polished something is the clearer the reflection is. so a completely unfinished blade would just look like a gray slab, and then as you polish it you would first see vague shapes reflected in it and the more you polish it the better you would be able to see them. if you have unlimited time to waste you can get a piece of scrap metal and a set of sandpaper and sit there polishing it. at around 400 grit you can make out your face and above 1000 you can probably see yourself well enough to shave.

This is how I did that kinda joint on my sicaran tank. I glued (epoxy) a magnet inside the tube and then I put one on the inside of the tank. The magnet is just enough to hold the gun facing forward so it doesnt flop around while you play, but you can still swing the armament back and forth for the cool factor.

No, it's staining and maybe a little calcium buildup absorbing some color, but it's not an issue, brass doesn't rust. But you can polish brass if it bothers you. I'd just wipe it out with a lint free cloth.

I use a lot of goblin green and livery green. Because vallejo discontinued livery green I have to get it from wizkids in the prismatic paint line. As I've said vallejo makes paints for other companies and doesn't tell anyone. Don't be afraid to search around for backup suppliers for your favorite paints.

First wash with dish soap like any washing rag. Rinse well by squeezing under running water and then put in some water with a drop of bleach, use gloves to handle since bleach will tear up your skin and be super careful to not get it in your eyes, if so flush eyes with tons of water IMMEDIATELY, but anyway, soak, just one drop or two of bleach in the water is fine, then rinse in water and hang outside to dry, don't leave it in the sun for too long or the sponge will break down, but a couple of hours is fine. Don't feel bad anon, i have almost 0 painted miniatures to actually use on it. I went about it backwards and wanted to have all the killteam battlefields before having the teams to play on it. That set took weeks to paint even though it doesnt look it since i dont have an airbrush. Each wall section was like 250 rivets which needed washed and then rehighlighted. I mostly only get an hour or so each night but it adds up! I also make alot of mistakes which i then need to go over again to fix. Im not a fast painter. I do really like your idea of grafitti though, i'll try doing that in the future to make it look more lived in.

Got the new spectre killteam, pretty neat aside from the pieces being all over all of the sprues instead of near each other. Got some offbrand grenadier heads since I'm bad at painting faces and eyes and I think they look much cooler. Got some orks primed and undercoat slopped on today while painting with some friends. About 50-60 models. It’s going to be slow progress but it’s nice to cut through a massive chunk of models in one go for a change.

Ended up meeting a friend of a friend and got to talk really in depth with them about painting beyond the very surface level that a lot of 40K players are at. Give me the advice that if I want to get better at painting that I should paint a model I vibe with but don’t care about getting it “right”.

Had this lad on my desk forever, and he's almost done. This was an experiment using Army Painter red rattlecan as both primer and basecoat. My opinion? It's way too expensive for what it does.

Correct, the dark part is indeed the environment reflecting off the blade. That's why you can make just about any reflection on a sword you like and most people choose a contrasting pattern.
