TQ: How dependent is your deck on your commander? How many removal spells before it absolutely folds?

TQ: Faldorn, and not that much since I tend to focus a bit on landfall and paradox on the 99, having more value from her makes things run smoother however.

Gotta ask, how do you guys "rate" what removals to add? Specially low costed spells/single target and/or sweepers (in Gruul preferably)? Been having a hard time trying to add more given the "play until end of next turn" that impulse has

I usually build around the Commander so on something like Captain N'gathrod I have a few protection and recursion pieces but if he eats two boardwipes I'm just pivoting to something like Bruvac and going straight up mill combo instead of Horror shenanigans or trying to end the game with Living Death, Breach the Multiverse, or Rise of the Dark Realms instead, because fuck bringing him out of the CZ for 9

Let's see, one by one of my primary decks...
>Avacyn
Can function without her with all the human hatebears; but my primary game plan is to get her out and start casting board wipes. But yeah, Avacyn herself is so expensive that three or four removals pretty much guarantees I'm out of that game.
>Depala
Can function just fine without her, though she rarely eats removal since she hardly ever swings herself and just crews vehicles, activating her tap ability to refill my hand.
>Necron deck
I use Anrakyr the Traveler at the helm but I've kept the deck about 90% the precon so it has all the backup commanders in there and it's also just a mono-b artifacts deck so it can keep ticking just fine without him.
>Ranar, the Ever-Watchful
It's mostly a flicker deck that need Ranar out since he shits out spirits every time I flicker something. Airbending was a huge boon to the deck.
>Grimgrin
It's a Grimmy the Timmy deck. I have hordes of zombies buy my gameplan is to send the big fat fatty in to punch you in the face. Usually do just fine recasting him two to three times. More than that and it's too expensive.
>Erebos, God of the Dead
Deck can function without him, since its mono-b punisher. But his static ability blocking life gain is pretty central. I can recast him a dozen times since it's so easy to make so much mana in B.
>Edgar Markov
Like most Markov decks it can run just fine on Eminence but I do like to bring out Uncle Eddie and swing away with big vampires. Can only last a couple removals because he is expensive. .
>Kaalia
Whether or not it can function without her is determined by how early she gets hit. Early removal and the deck crumbles. If you wait too long, the deck is already churning and I've got a full board of fatties.
>Ulrich of the Krallenhorde
It's Ulrich's Fight Club. I'm not even trying to win, I just want to fight your commander over and over.
>Vivi
It's Vivi, lol
>Yuriko
Go ahead and remove her. I don't give a fuck.

All of my decks are dependant to at least a medium degree on the commander. I don't see any point in playing this format if the commander isn't important to the game plan. Of course that doesn't mean I can't win without my commander in most situations, the exceptions being Baru and Inferno, but having the commander out and alive significantly accelerates the game plan.
>>
>>98528575

I dont think they would have wanted or "missed" banning rhystic because I think thats exactly the kind of card they liked seeing be played. a garbage common unplayable in 60 card becoming one of the greatest blue cards ever in commander is 100% commander style

plus I think its why they rolled back old rules banning wrath of god (very early on) and other such cards that are exponentially better in multiplayer games. they wanted commander to become its own thing completely (which it really is)

still feels strange being able to put Coalition Victory in a 5c deck though

>TQ: How dependent is your deck on your commander? How many removal spells before it absolutely folds?
Like... fucking all of them fold on the spot. Other than my "win the game" tribal deck which is supposed to rely on any of the 20 or so cards that win the game on the spot. Zombie deck has ways of making more without the commander but the deck is built around saccing/killing off Hildibrand Manderville over and over and keep bringing him back to keep killing him off
>>
TQ: my main decks:

1. RUB Thraximundar, Br4: he controls the board and wins through ultra violence. 100% essential. only like 4 other creatures in the deck to win with LT commander: VIVI ORNITIER

2. W/B Squall Seed Mercenary, Br3: not really at all necessary. Its tribal knights making mass copies of Knight Exemplar and exalted knights
LT Commander: foil book art Gleaming Splendor

3. MONO G TOSKI, Br2: its equipment Voltron with the Toski boiiii. definitely need him. although you could turn Birds of Paradise or Bugenhagen into a big beasty Voltron, it wouldn't be as well-protected. LT CDR: Mistcutter Hydra

4. GUB Indominus Rex, Alpha, Br2: Pitches keyword soup creatures to graveyard. Alt-win con is RISE OF THE DARK REALMS and it's pretty effective. Need to add Concordant Crossroads to the deck to make it even better. There's some other big beasties in the deck that could close out the game. LT CDR: we wuz KRANG UTROM WARLORDs n sheeeit

5. 5c GARTH, One-Eye, Br3: Lots of alt win-cons. My favorite is individually Door to Nothingness-ing each opponent individually, bringing it back from GY and repeating. Coalition Victory (weird that its EDH legal) also in as an easy win.

With various enchantments it's possible to win this way without Garth but using his Lotus (Lotusi?) really greatly helps. The 3rd & 4th alt-win cons really need him for blinking, as you use infinite Black Lotuses to deck out everyone.

I was considering adding Lab Man to do it to myself because I still remember when he dropped in Innistrad thinking it was the funniest and dumbest card but would be hilarious to win that way (after numerous Worldwake Jace
losses the previous year or 2 in casual legacy and/or kitchen table games). LT CDR: Displacer Kitten

no. 7 new brew is Smaug the Impenetrable RB. its built as a bracket 3 but really probably is more like a bracket 4. 1000% needs him for the pestilence or other loops

The one I'm currently working on is significantly better when it's commander is alive and you've had a chance to draw a lot of cards. It can function without him but my other threats don't have shroud/hexproof. That being said the other threats that can win. As a shroud creature it's more board wipes that screw him.

It depends what you're reanimating. I had some guy Sol Ring Dark Ritual turbo out a turn 3 Breach the Multiverse which I Commandeered. I reanimated the caster's own Valgavoth and won within turns. The table was mad at ME for using the card when it was the guy's fucking creature.

This sounds like the perfect "damage over time" commander. Just put in all the colorless trigger-doublers and put odor counters on every creature on the battlefield. I need to find all the Stab Wound shit in black and just sit back and let er rip
>>
>>98530000
the problem is the creatures are still on the field and can in fact, do damage to you. Not even the fact that the floor is putting one counter on one creature each of you turns. IT also targets, so random ward or hexproof shit will block a counter being put on something, then you have the fact a boardwipe sets you back anyway.

cedh tournament near me is using these rules to determine wins. they also have bracket 2, 3 and 4 tables (ie 0 "game changers", up to 3, or infinite)

partner commanders and backgrounds are not allowed, thassa and underworld breach are pre-banned and you have to cast your commander at least once.

even if you scored points in other ways and knocked everyone else out (or "won the game"...by the way you just lost the game) you can't win if you didn't cast your commander once.

I'm not against scoring based on kills rather than wins. It encourages active play and discourages durdling and smol bean behavior and it fucks thoracle fags. Deathmatch is the most honored of FPS modes, no reason it can't work for card games.

I mean, if these are alternate prizes to win aside from the winner who beats everyone, that's fine. It's like having a "best painted" or "best sportsman" award at a 40k tournament. Adds more fun conditions and doesn't take away from the person who actually wins the games.
>>
>>98530318

Is this a bit against the "spirit" of Bracket 3?

>dude has Krark's Thumb and the thing that lets you proliferate on casting a spell
>casts Ral Zarek and a few cantrips and ults with him immediately
>flips 10 coins and picks 4 heads, taking 4 extra turns

gavin never bothered to define 'chaining extra turns' so ral player is a-ok, extra turns almost always go infinite anyway

there is a difference between high power strategic competitive commander and turbo combo slop. if you cant tell the difference then maybe this tourney isnt for you

also "GCs" are not official. rules its beta testing and it changes every 6 months.

wrath of god was considered broken in commander 20 years ago. (big difference is they were playing commander, not racing to combo sloppa with multiple commanders to get as many colors as possible)

It's an old boogeyman that propagated downward from cEDH Jhoira where casual players just started cramming extra turn cards into their deck with no real wincon so it ended up wasting a fuckton of time without actually winning (Izzet special). If someone has a win clearly visible from their first extra turn it's not a problem though imo.

MLD and chaining extra turns really boil down to durdling and if you can solve the issue of gimping your own lands you solve the MLD problem
similarly if you just have impactful plays with a time stretch that the game ends immediately or go infinite turns everyone knows it and you prevent the durdling automatically, 99% of all extra turn bs is about wasting people's time being autistic announcing phases and steps while fiddling around with counters and shit that's why paradox engine got banned too

MLD is a bit of a similar case imo where in theory it's an Avacyn wincon but in practice, especially today, the average Avacyn player can't play the game for shit so they just waste everyone's time playing boardwipe tribal and running out of cards in their hand before they get to 8 lands because they forgot they need to run cards that do something useful. Very miserable play pattern and I wouldn't say MLD is something many people are pining to bring back for one deck or so you can sometimes randomly win the game resolving Ruination (or Blood Moon by the new definition).
I say this as someone that thinks there probably should be some sort of standardized version of Blood Moon that's slightly softer and Gavin just tells everyone to suck it up on. Probably a colorless artifact that lets everyone pick the type of their lands when it enters. Still very crippling to decks that need a very diverse manabase but not as much of an instant total lockout which is what most people don't want in modern cards.

Honestly there's a lot of little details here that make the new art kinda nice. She's got her gloves tucked into her belt and while the art is simpler and more impressionist, it's got a warm character and she's got a cute, even flirty expression.

The boobs are an unfortunate casualty, equal parts more sensible fit for armor and the death of the classic fantasy babe bod. It would be less annoying if I for a moment took that bare armpit as a coincidence and not as a consolation prize unfortunately not aimed at the general audience. We also miss out on the trim and texture of her old robes, which makes the art feel a little unfinished.

No idea what's up with the grape purple hair. It doesn't look bad, but it is a jarring change.

gavin never defined chaining extra turns so it doesn't matter, it's not an issue worth arguing about because extra turns are just a stone's throw away from going infinite anyway and even value turns 95% of the time get into a definitive win
>>
>>98531276
As long as it is on the same card, actually. For instance: Time stretch is not chaining extra turns even though it gives you 2. And Ral isn't even something you can guarantee, so you are basically saying Ral is a bracket 4 card OR you aren't allowed to use Ral's ult, OR you just lose if you end up getting heads more than once.

indeed, which is the scryfall tangent I was on when I found it, lol.
speaking of which, picrel seems really good in any deck that can make it unblockable. its top commanders are Jin Sakai, Kamiz, and MacCready, so that checks out, but it only has like 1% inclusion in any of them. one stolen creature per turn cycle is a pretty premium rate for a 3 drop, even if you don't have much control over what you're getting, so I still think it's being slept on and wonder if there isn't any other home I'm not thinking of.
(this one is way more annoying than the Necratog because it requires everyone *else* to track their graveyard order.)

he definitely gets more value, and don't get me wrong he's a great card and they go in a lot of decks. but Scavenge costs mana, and can't be done at instant speed, which matters a lot for combos. the Atog (and the extremely similar card from the same set, Zombie Scavengers) can do stuff like draw up to 4 cards per cycle with Teval's Judgment or Fang, Fearless L'Cie on the board, at the price of zero mana.

They're both 3 mana creatures with manaless, no-tap, instant speed "leaves the graveyard" outlets, and the only other cards I managed to find that fit that particular description were Woodwraith Strangler, at 4 mana, and Necropolis, at 5 mana. They all share the unfortunate distinction of only working with creature cards, which sort of sucks.

He's pretty good but not necessary. The whole point of the deck is to be a cheats deck that doesn't hardcast creatures but I got ways of doing it that aren't 1 mana spell cascade into Hypergenesis. This is a really niche and retarded question but say i have a creature exiled with Eater of Virtue that had, hexproof, let's say, and then somebody or myself used pull from eternity targeting the card that gave hexproof, would eater of virtue still retain the hexproof granting? On one hand it was a card exiled with it which fills the stipulation printed on the card, but at the same time it's not there anymore, I've been hit with so many gotchas lately in my pod i feel like I'm gaslighting myself

The image is fine except for the manchest. A full img2img gets rid of the details that are actually cute and/or good. I maintain that using a targeted mask for inpainting would yield better results than just redrawing the entire thing and removing any of the good elements of the original.

Similar question about Eater

Let's say I'm playing Odric and have the katana attached to a weenie that thanks to his keyword sharing, has Flying Lifelink Indestructible Vigilance Double Strike until end of turn

I sac the weenie to Ashnod's Altar for 2 mana and exile it. Does it retain its keywords as it was exiled with them, or does it turn into a do-nothing at the end of turn when Odric's Share Effect wears off?
>>
>>98533750

Odric's effect doesn't apply to exiled cards, therefore the weenie exiled with Eater of Virtue doesn't have Lifelink Indestructible Vigilance or Double Strike unless those are printed on the card. It never stops being a do-nothing at any point in this process. (Well, it gives +2/+0.)

it alright especially in some kind of spells-matter. I really dig these modal toolboxy commons and uncommons, they really make it possible to throw bulk into a $10 deck (not counting basics)
Heritage Reclamation is in my Kraven deck; I wouldn't replace it with either of the other two because the deck is already really good at destroying creatures and doesn't need the help with flyers. I think it's better in most decks too, but I suppose if you were in Simic then the flying hate could be helpful since you're low on instant speed creature removal otherwise.

I didnt realize return to nature was already power crept YIKES. but having a cycling option like the FF one or a cantrip attached is nice for sure. guess I'd have to look at whats out there.
>>
>>98534190
That's the best one I think it did with just one single prompt. This one kept the western style the most if you really prefer that kinda slop. >>
>>98533826
It's a 'necessary' response to a BO1 format being the face of Magic. In the old days you wouldn't run mainboard artifact/enchantment removal unless the meta was extremely biased toward one or both of those types. You would have sideboard slots with disenchant style effects for specific matchups.

This was the original purpose of Cycling by the way; having niche cards that you could pay a little bit of mana to replace if you ended up in a matchup where that niche wasn't filled. Of course JotC being staffed with retarded incompetents decided that the raison d'etre of a mechanic wasn't important anymore and started putting it on generally useful cards. They leaned into the handful of mistakes of early Cycling design instead of the actual good designs.

I'm personally against these cards because I think it's important to always run enchantment/artifact removal if your colors allow it and players should learn to dedicate mainboard slots to hate cards/removal if their deck gets fucked by that particular card type. These type of designs reward shoddy deckbuilding and poor play in which every card 'needs' to have an immediate impact when you draw it and the concept of saving something for a big threat instead of playing it just to use your mana every turn is unheard of.

AKTULLY

with UB shit, since groomers of the coast had their balls removed in a surgery, they don't negotiate with other IP holders to enable their normally contracted artists to be able to sell their master prints (I forget what they call the original art).

so real deal MTG artists (who's left anyway, no Queen Terese or baller Seb left, Donato rarely will work with them and Frazier being so old has some computer hijinks going on) usually dont deal with UB shit especially SLD...

tl;dr its usually in-house artists doing the UB art since they're already bound by the super restrictive contract agreements (controlling their money).

for Korg I have no idea what kind of art department they have but clearly they have something for Miku (blech) to even be a thing.

there's a very small amount of mono G frogs support, Poliwhallop and Oakhollow Village are both probably worth running if you decide to make it frogs.dec for the laughs, but that's really what Clement and Grolnok are meant to do
>>
(to be clear I am saying that I think that I think a Blor deck would be fun)
>>
>>98534347
Personally I would be trying pump Blor with counters via enchantments or other creatures and use stuff like pic related, Sakiko, Mother of Summer, and The Aetherspark to have Blor's damage continue the gravy train with more mana. Most stuff that does power = draw goes in to capitalize off of the frog. Lots of dorks and quick ramp to get to 5 mana as fast as you can. No other mono green frogs synergize with the plan so none of those go in. He already has trample so you can just focus on making him big enough to swing through any blockers and no worry about chump blocks.

Probably middling no matter how you play it but mono green voltron is pretty homeless anyway so who cares.

Even disregarding how people would mainboard Disenchant like the other anon said, the coexistence of Cycling with sideboards renders Cycling redundant. Especially because even Cycling {2} is a rate bad enough you don't want to mainboard it with the expectation of actually paying 2 mana to cantrip. Why run a card that becomes 2 mana "Draw a card" in most matchups when you can just sideboard a stronger hate piece that only goes in your deck in matchups where you know it's live?
This also ended up leading to overspecialization in sideboard pieces that created a lot of extremely unhealthy play patterns. AKA the infamous "Dredge wins game 1 then games 2 and 3 are about whether you open Leyline of the Void" where hate pieces were no longer limited by how niche they were, and instead only had to focus on how hard they could instantly win matchups which is itself another problem where the game comes down to Go Fish rather than any sort of involved decision-making.

2nd round of opinions:

I make a deal with player B, to deal with player Cs board that we cant let untap with. He doesn’t swing at me for 3. I board wipe, dealing with all problems.

Did I break the deal?

Same player, different game

We make a deal - player B removes player Cs infinite combo piece and stop the win on players C turn, if he does, I cant attack or reduce his life, and we cant touch each others boards on our next turns. He counters my sakashima, then I cast alter of dementia, and exile his library.

Did I break the either deal?
>>
>>98534347
Wilson with Raised by Giants or Agent of the Shadow Thieves would be objectively better. Better keywords for less mana. You’re paying three extra mana for hexproof and indestructible in mono green, the color that can easily achieve that in the 99 with less mana and dozens of choices.
>>
>>98534766
1. no because you wiped C's board - you didn't promise that you wouldn't wipe B's board as well
2. no because 'not touching each other's boards' means no touching permanents; sakashima was dealt with on the stack and B's library isn't a permanent

Can we talk about Pauper Commander here?
My first stab at the format (to be honest, having never even seen a match), not even a full list yet.
https://scryfall.com/@mytgmtg/decks/5565beed-5333-4f02-b07f-6265d47e1ee0

The idea is to have reliable life gain so I can keep bringing Deathless Knight back from the graveyard, then summoning, equipping and attacking every round. I never send him to the commander zone, because he'll be back in my hand next turn anyway, while everyone else's commanders are getting more expensive.

What I know I'm missing - ramping, more token generation since I can't bring him back to block, only to attack.

What do you guys think? Is this anything?

Pauper commnader sounds fun until you realize there are no boardwipes and no good ways to win with combat damage so your only option is to play combo.

>People still think EDHREC means most played and not most brewed and what that distinction means.

UB isn't winning... good commanders are still on top... real players don't play slop... sales don't mean anything... the real fans will win out...

tribal frogs would be fun but this dude can slot in just like a Toski deck. which I just made it a Voltron equipment deck. Larry Niven's disk and whirlwind for board wipes. Give him death touch so fight spells are kill spells.

I don't know how good tribal frogs are, tribal squirrels are silly but I just wasn't interested in it. I even took the myriad x2 squirrel out (although it would be good for draw, maybe I should put it back in)

colossification is in my deck, and I have instill energy in there to untap him to use it on the same turn because that will be a lightning magnet for removal.

super state is great, I dont have it in mine actually but have been wanting to get it but keep forgetting. I have Iron Man Armor (newish card) to give him flying.

He's got exponential growth which is double target creatures power X times. easy to go over 100 with that.

Blackblade Reforged is a great equipment. Priciest equipment I have for him I think is Power Fist. Bow of Nylea is nice. Buster Sword is great if you have it but don't break the bank for it.

its hard to even find a proxy of but Riding the Dilu Horse is silly AF and its a permanent effect (until the creature is removed). Gives horsemanship and +3/+3. every time I've whipped that out people thought it was silly AF.

strong back is great and I actually didn't see that one (kind of missed most of fallout but I do have power fist as mentioned). its good to diversify having equipment + some auras.

earth crystal from final fantasy is good. if you can swing it or get a proxy also get The Ozolith to save counters.

shadow spear + sword of truth & justice are Must-proxies

another less obvious but useful one is "awakening zone", enchantment that makes an eldrazi spawn token (sac for colorless) so if it ends up being more Voltron than tribal frogs you've got chump blockers plus generating mana for equip costs

also either Crawlspace (cheaper) or Silent Arbiter if it goes Voltron

Its okay you don't know how EDHREC works. They didn't drones out in the middle of the night to rummage through everyones decks to know what they are actually playing.
Instead, they just pool from uploaded, public decks on sites like moxfield and generate data from that.
You know, the kinds of places where you can just set anything as a commander and nothing else, upload it and it sees it as "a deck."
Surely, no one did this. There really was a surge of 5K real decks, being played for really reals in two weeks being made that pushed her above Ur-dragon.
Another incredibly expensive and brewed deck but barely actually made and used.

Just 1 more year until the collapse of UB... one more year until WotC realizes their mistake and Magic is saved...

bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. the printed effect is always gonna beat wishing you had the card in hand. even if you have a mithril coat in hand who's to say you've got the mana for it

toski I think is still the kind of this kind of thing though because its indestructible + card draw + uncounterable + medium cost
>>
>>98534548
they need to print more cards that enable mana burn especially in red. its insane theres one commander that does it and thats it
>>
>>98535099
Who said that? Who said anything like that?
What is being said is that EDHREC doesn't reflect what's actually being played.
Stop being intentionally retarded.
>>
>>98535114
There's no demand for this because people aren't floating mana on phase change for no reason.
>But what if I give them a bazillion mana
Yeah and the moment someone can spend it you look retarded

>>98535116

whats funny is the UB commanders that are popular are from good franchises that make sense and are high fantasy

Other than King Arthur stories from literally 900 years ago, Tolkien's stuff is the most influential high fantasy work since the year 1135. Dungeons & Dragons, Final Fantasy and Magic: the Gathering are all directly influenced by Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit

no surprise the top UB commanders are from LOTR & FF. Looking right now, in the top 50, most are universe within or FF or LOTR. theres 1 from Avatar the Last Airbender and 2 from Fallout, and fallout is massive so I don't think anyone should really be complaining even if you can't stand UB

tl;dr: Tolkien is 2nd party to MTG, FF is like a cousin
>>
>>98535178
Dunno man. I think some of the Hobbit commanders are going to get high up there. CEDH is losing their minds over the sultai elf.

It's more that commanders get stronger over time and a huge chunk of viable new commanders are UB so they naturally replace the older more outdated commanders.

hobbit is tolkien so thats 1000% fine if you think MTG should stick to high fantasy. you do know the Hobbit is the prequel to LOTR from the 1930s right?

>>98535225
I opened this (foil but not borderless) in the same collector I got my foil book cover Gleaming Splendor from. not sure what else to do with it other than slot it into a Toski deck? do you have any specific hijinks planned for it
