my friend has been playing this game for about a month doing starter deck-tier shit. he tried a draft on his own (against my advice) and somehow went 5-3 against all diamond and mythic players.
his only experience learning Magic was a few sessions of watching me grind drafts on his account to farm a bunch of free gems/packs for him, which put him at Diamond without ever trying Limited.

No, not at all. It only really works in early-midgame in the right Elfball Elixir deck. Really thing about what it does. Loyalty abilities are sorcery speed, so you need enough curve and gas to immediately gain life to keep it alive to survive the first stack after it resolves. Then you need to keep it alive to your next turn while gaining life to keep its going up.
The fact that you have to work to make it good means its a perfectly serviceable card.

I haven't played since maybe March of the Machines? I got about 15k in gems and 250,000 in gold and a plethora of wildcards, maybe like 100 split between rares and mythics alone and an unimportant number of commons and uncommon WC's. If I more or less had say 80-90% of everything in prior Standard sets on Arena(plus a few anthologies here and there)

What are the best non-Alchemy formats that I could probably play that's not Standard on Arena? Has Pioneer or Modern been fully implemented yet? I don't think I want to invest into Standard as of this point and i'm fine playing mostly Explorer/Pioneer.

Pioneer isn't completely there but pretty much all the cards from the top decks are available, and they sometimes add cards if a new deck comes along and is missing some random card from Gatecrash or whatever. I've been playing a lot of Historic lately and even though there's a few alchemy cards floating around here and there it's really not a big issue. I've been just trying to port over modern decks into it and seeing where it gets me with what is available. Converted a modern Rock deck this week and it's a lot of fun to play, it's missing a few cards from the original deck like Soul Spike but I got it most of the way there and was able to just substitute other stuff in it's place.

I just can't stand the cards and I hated how it permeated itself into 80% of non-Standard game modes. Plus the problem I have with Alchemy cards are that they're not balanced very well and there's no counterplay to a lot of the cards. You can't outplay seek with shit like Spirit of the Labyrinth or a Notion Thief or Shadow of Doubt or whatever. They just get the card for free always and whatnot. Also it permeating Brawl/EDH on Arena gave me the shits as well when I lost in a GW mirror because my opponent cast TIME WARP in a GW deck. You can't play around shit like that. But I might have a look at what the Pioneer meta is like and see if I can make something. I also saw that there's something about Timeless which I presume is like the Vintage of Arena but still has Alchemy stuff in it

The main alchemy card you'll see in timeless is Hydroponics Architect, it can get pretty annoying and is really strong with fetchlands. Timeless is fun and a really powerful format but it's got a lot of turn 1 oops I win matches. Also the only format you can ply 4x strip mine. I mostly play pioneer, there's barely any UB shit in it the decks are fun and there's some room to brew if you just want to mess around.

After Badgermole bans, it feels relatively tame, but that's only owing to the fact that big tourneys of this cycle are modern. Competitive scene of Arena follows that closely. Once we move back to standard, you'll start seeing fresh dominating brews. Powervise, Standard is extremely high. Meta revolves around the cards of the last sets. Edge of Eternities and Airbender were massive for green. Strixhaven and Airbender for Jeskike decks. Marvel had such a high number of cards in it that it's just waiting for it to be busted.

You can take Standard decks into Pioneer, and five to four extra cards, and dominate there. Badgermole fits everyhwere, or you go lessions deck with a few learn cards, and you've a top deck there.

Even though I loved the Architect in draft and alchemy, I've grown to really dislike the card. It seems like wotc totally ignored the existance of fetches and strip mine when they created it. It typifies wotcs current idea of power as it's a snowball-effect with no downsides except having to play fetches (which itself isn't a real downside).

These days too few of the powerful constructed level cardss powerful has a significant downside like they had in the early days of magic (Juzam Djinn, Necropotence, Ancient Tomb, Pact of Negation, Ball Lightning, Pouncing Jaguar, Swords to Plowshares and so on). Now powerful cards are mainly limited with the Legendary-status, which itself can be used as an upside (Ajani or the new key-card). It's only removal which has a significat drawback but it's also substituted with a lower casting costs. I understand drawbacks are "negative" but would it really hurt to add a damage or cost effect to 1 drops?

It'd make a natural balance to the game where you have to think over your decisions instead of just go t1 best drop, t2 best drop, t3 best drop. I wish there was a better counterplay or balance to these powercards than simply winning the dice roll. It's quite telling when you'll nearly always play the Architect over Tamiyo t1 in timeless. The resulting deck is like Bug Delver on steroids (though with random power-up boost). I guess people love the deck due to Brainstorm and Force of Will, two old classic cards which makes you think.
