>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre. Let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dragon Rampant, Dropfleet & Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Full Spectrum Dominance,
Gaslands, HeroClix, Kings of War, Lords & Legends,
Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, Open Combat, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam,
SAGA, Sahipkıran, Sludge, Space Weirdos, StarCraft, Stargrave, Sword Weirdos,
Urban War, Void Admiral, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenos Rampant, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Goblin King Games, Lucid Eye, Mantic,
North Star Military Figures, OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat,
Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

I don't play wargames because I can't find players to give them a try.
The Rampant books I mentioned at >>98530166 look promising to me as flexible systems to cover a multitude of dramas. A sort of "fall back ruleset if nothing better can be found."
I don't feel comfortable using Tabletop Simulator because of the supposed high rate of autists there when it comes to the Warhammers that it seems mostly used for. Maybe the number of rejects among rejects there is exaggerated, but I'd never play Russian Roulette in my life.

But seriously though are the Xenos Rampant fog of war mechanics really that bad?
And how are the dragon rampant 1st and 2nd editions?

Full Spectrum Dominance. Awesome miniatures, even more awesome terrain. I credit it for getting me interested in smaller scale wargaming and I have been having a fantastic time ever since. It's an interesting skirmish game that feels larger scale than it is due to the tiny size of the models, playing on a 2x3 foot field and having 15-20ish models/stands per side. The game is technically miniatures and even scale agnostic, which is neat.

The alternating activation system is the gimmick of the game, where you roll a certain number of dice at the start of every round based on the size of the game (rerolling as many as you like), and then each unit has different weapons and equipment that require certain dice results to activate. You can distribute your dice to units immediately to lock those actions in (which allows you to use them as reactions during your opponents activations) or keep them in reserve in your pool to be more flexible later. I realized pretty quickly that it's got a surprising amount of nuance and probably a decently high skill ceiling. A lot of times you have to adapt your strategy on the fly when you don't get results you need to use certain weapons or equipment. That has led to some interesting plays in my games that I dont think ever would have been made otherwise.

Pretty cool game. Would recommend even if just for the minis alone.
>>
>>98530497
What is an average Army size in this game? I think I have the STLs, maybe even terrain(or at least I hope), and wondering how much effort would it be to get into it with 2 basic armies to drag a friend in with.
>>
>>98530381

The Xenos Rampant activation rules are really forgiving, due to free actions, bonuses from nearby commanders etc. You could also just play the game so that a failed activation means you just move on to the next unit, not changing the active player. It's mentioned in the books.
Dragon rampant is pretty fun too, but there are fewer sources of activation bonuses in that game and the morale rules are more punishing.

I funded the trench crusade Kickstarter and now I don’t feel comfortable using Kickstarter again.
I know there are more reasons beyond the Kickstarter mess up.
But why is there so much hate for trench crusade?
And which one of you /awg/tists made the current trench crusade general? It has an ai op image (look at the gun) and the TQ is asking about other war games. Is the reason to contain them from using this general?
Or was it one of the warhammer anons for different autistic reasons?

I should have learned from wga the damned taking so long to be honest.

VERY different game. LI is for sweats, DZC is for more narratively inclined gamers who aren't afraid to be oneshot by giant razor worms
>>
>>98534735
I can't tell if that means the game is more or less lethal, because that's one of the things I hated about LI.
>>
>>98534469
Much like Mecha Fans don't want Lancerfags cluttering up the thread really.
>>
>>98534788
DZC can have units that kill easily, or struggle to kill, it depends on which edition your playing and which unit is facing which other unit. Typically, a Saber Tanks railgun will core our an enemy tank with a clean hit, but a single railgun shot won't do much to bother an infantry squad who could, in turn, be firing their own anti tank weapons at the aforementioned Saber.
It's not a triangle of balance, there's more nuance to it than that, but there's typically the right weapon for the right job. The game isn't hyper lethal in my experience, a lot of the tactics come down to area denial and objective capturing, which is way fun, but there's definitely times where you'll throw caution to the wind and go on an armoured column pushing up the streets crushing enemy armour and providing moving cover for your own infantry and taking out anti air units to secure the sky for your own dropships.

It's a good game, markedly better than LI, but they are two veeeeeeeeeery different games.
>>
>>98534469
>But why is there so much hate for trench crusade?
many reason: malicious ad, they betrayed the original plan to go to a gw like business model, the lore is mediocre/cringe, childish behaviour of the author and so on.
>>
>>98534469
I don't hate it but the people interested in it seem like people i don't want to associate with.

One of my hobby aims is to make a couple fantasy armies copying historical wargaming basing styles of big multibased units and diorama-style command bases

People will hate him for this but he speaks the truth to a degree. I decided to build my Successors army with Warlord Games phalangites exactly for their "lack" of details compared with Victrix kits. If I were to paint 10-20 minis I would go with Victrix but whenever I enter the 30+ minis territory I go for non-Victrix kits.
>>
>>98539507
I do not want to agree with the scammer, but he does have a point.
STL and more modern products for some fucking reason insist on filling as much of the model with garbage and/or use proportions that are only useful if the model is never used in a game and stays a display piece.
>>
>>98539544
That would be true, if not for the fact that Victrix models look better than the comparables WGA literally every single time
>>
>>98539549
Most of us are not professional painters, nor are you. Victrix minis look great when unpainted or painted by studio painters but in many cases the sheer amount of details makes them a hassle to paint for an average hobbyist.
>>
>>98539563
This is, unfortunately, just cope.

I think it's unfair to criticise victrix for detail bloat. Sure, there are many belts that hang over mail and cloth, but it's not excessive. It's fair to say that the kits are not as cross-compatible as WGA or North Star, but they have a superior level of detail and more realistic proportions than the others.
However, I think the WGA design philosophy is sound and I appreciate that they try to standardize their scale to enable more kitbashing.

I'm with anon that one. I play Genestealer cults for example. Where you need like 4 to 6 units of 20 models each.
The amount of details this fucker have for being models that will only be on a table for a turn is absurd. Specially when they are going to be look at from a distance and not up close.
Regarding the image from left to right:
>Warlord Games, Gripping Beast, Perry, Fireforge, Victrix and Wargame Atlantics
Too much "detail" will get lost on the table
>>

The scammer is from WGA is throwing shade to Victrix, but it does have a point.

I like to think that Tony Reidy has redeemed himself, WGA has released over 100 plastic kits now. Not the highest quality miniatures on the market, but perfectly serviceable for wargaming.
I don't have an Instagram account, so my minis are for playing. I am rather vain and I do occasionally fish for compliments in /WIP/ though.

>>98537655
Its litterally a part of oathmark
Before you make a "list" you make a kingdom representing your roster. Each troop has a terrain they come from and relative distance from your capital
Like for elves I picked the grasslands (Autumn Plains) and Forests (summer forest) for my tier two locations. Thus I can pull knights from the grasslands and rangers from the woods for my armies

Based image poster.
I'm not seeing the "overly detailed" part. And I can't ever remember looking at a Victrix model and thinking "that's too busy".

If anyone wants to post victrix models that are overly detailed I'd like to see them.
>>
>>98539922
The over detailed is mostly Tony talking shit, but having a rather standard size models across all the range makes it easier for kitbashing.
Like some knights with plasma rifles if you want. Properly proportioned models suck for this kind of things, but are good for other things.
>>
>>98539625
>Sure, there are many belts that hang over mail and cloth, but it's not excessive.

>1st ed
>5core based no stats just weapons and special abilities
>very randomized crew creation
>narrative campaign framework with good material but works best with a GM and several players

>2nd ed
>stats specific to game, simple but less interesting to me ymmv

>very detailed mission creation, strong solo play focus as ivan realizes that's where the lonely nerd money is

Its fun but very shallow mechanically and I say this as someone who likes them. All of them lean on having a creative side that brings the various tables and procedures together, but do provide good tools to encourage that. I prefer 1st ed but ymmv. All of them have a generic space wild west that's a bit like early rogue trader and a bit like firefly.

The combat parts are the same rules care 5core skirmish essentials in the OP which is easier to reference for the most part.
>>
>>98539813
If looking at the new stuff, I'd look at the plastic sets or Command starters, sans Khymaera, they put out. Each one is 30 pts, most games are 50-75 pts., and everyone in it is a character choice, so one buy and you're good on what's in them (Some of the older armies, not so much, but the Cryx, Gravediggers, Old Umbrey, and Krielguard definitely are all character). I say skip the Khymaera one, only because their unit in it is a character assassination piece, so they are just good against any of the starters that are all characters.
>>
>>98540534
>are the same rules as 5core
Had a mini stronk there.
>>
>>98540212
It's honestly serviceable. There's a lot of options and I salute that. Presentation is super clean too and each chapters have it's own example to make sure things are extra clear. That being said, I decided against GMing it because the pre-battle and post-battle rolls are quite long and dull for non GM/solo gamers.

The book-included QRS is smart enough to reference page numbers for what it can't details, but enemy AI/deployment should have been there as well as weapon effects. Also snap fire is missing too but this one is poorly explained anyway so I wonder if it was a late addition to the game.
>>
>>98540604
Snap Fire was in second edition. It changed how reaction rolls were done, 2nd does the roll for each specific model where as 3rd rolls dice equal to the number of models and lets you assign the results.
1st had a different form of snap fire.
3rd putting the rules for how the actual game turn happens after what any of the actions are, over 100 pages in, is fucking retarded layout.
>>
>>98540630
It was weird having the battle rules so far in when movement, shooting and close combat are explained from the get-go. But since everything is page referenced it's just a matter of flipping the book if you have a physical copy.

Since snap fire was already in 2nd edition maybe it was better explained then. When are you allowed to shot during snap fire? Anytime during the target's movement or at the end of it? If it's the former you can "interrupt" a cover to cover move/dash but if it's the latter you won't be able to shot so that definitely deserved some clarification.
>>
>>98540684
>since everything has page numbers you just use those to flip back and forth to specific pages
Yes, that is how books work. Its a badly designed book to have to frequently do that.
2nd ed was not a great tome of well written material either, see the snap fire rules. I read it as any time during the targets movement when its in LOS and range of the shooter but its not explicitly clear.
They probably answered questions about it in emails, forums, etc. and it got dialed into 3rd ed.
I like a lot of the guy's material but its got problems.

I recall finding a cool independent miniature online shop I had never heard of before last year sometime. But I delayed ordering and I forgot about it until now. But for the life of me I can’t remember much about it. Does anyone know of an online shop that fits this criteria

Why do you think hobgoblin is so bad?
>>
>>98540768
I wouldn't say it's badly designed because except for combat rules coming way too soon it's properly referenced, laid out, plus lot of clear examples . It's more like lot of nice and thoughtful stuff that weren't polished enough. Like the QRS being on the very last spread is great, but it's missing a few stuff. The pages' side is color coded by chapter, but it's only the bottom instead of a stair effect that runs along to help you pick it up. Anyway it's surface level and I'm more concerned with the gameplay itself.

On this very topic:
-Being Stunned force you or the AI to chose between Moving or Combat.
-Moving is Moving, no problem here, but Combat is either Firing or Fighting.
-You don't need to Move to Fire but you absolutely need to Move to Fight.
-Therefore the real choice is between Moving or Firing for Stunned units but Moving or Moving for Stunned melee only units (nearly all the Roving Threat enemy table) as they need to do so to Fight but since they are Stunned they can't Fight after Moving.
-So a Stunned ranged unit is still a real menace but a Stunned melee unit is absolutely harmless.

I ended up ruling that Stunned unit can Move or Fire or Half Move and Fight so both have a chance at remaining dangerous. I don't know if that would break anything in the long run but I thought it made more sense. Don't know if you ever stumbled on this situation and just got along with it?

XCOM Anon here. The seal clubbing continues until morale improves.

This weeks mission was in an underground facility in South America... wait, this is just a rave? In any case, I kind of messed up and made the mission a long corridor run, which did the Sectoids no favours, and the mission finished fairly quickly with no problems.
I bought a box of Tenfold Dungeon for it, and overall I think there's some pretty nice potential for this. I'm gonna see if I can use some of this for MCP terrain as well. I wouldn't call it a CHEAP option, unless you can find a good discount somewhere, but it is nice and pretty good right out of the box.
The only really troublesome part of the mission came at the end when I was like "This is a great time to use my grenade! Oh no! There's a civilian there!" and had to try and do it "manually" as it were. Therese managed to clip both sectoids even behind cover... and both then made their Toughness checks. Luckily, the civilian then ran away, thus clearing the way for one of my Heavies to blast the fuck out of them all with a rocket launcher.

As for the squad, after this round I built my Alien Containment, so I can now start trying to actually have my Support capture one of these dudes.
I pumped 5 Alien Alloys into research so I'd finish my Prep Protocols this turn, and then moved onto Lasers. After that I think I'll beeline to power armour. I had the engineering team build me a Skeleton Suit for Therese my Assault, who makes LT this round, as this is literally just as straight up better Carapace armour.

Next week? Retrieval Mission against Sectoids in the North American Wilderness. So at least it's not another Combat Patrol or UFO Crash mission. Still fighting nothing but Sectoids tho...

I ran 3rd once and decided I didn't like it enough to dig in. The asymmetry of stunned capacity didn't bother me, they're shaken up and winded or otherwise fucked up enough they can't do as much. If you're really worried about it give a stunned shooter a negative modifier based on the number of stun counters. Seems an obvious way to make it more "realistic" but I suspect it wasn't included because the game design tends to favour being able to do things over "realism".
You're mistaking surface level for an integrated and inherent problem with the design, which rolls over onto the gameplay. Somehow the QUR for a game that has very simple rules is insufficient, this is a bad sign. There's no index. That's a bad sign. I can infer from the QRS that the full rules for Stunned models is in the Action section but it might not be if they're unable to figure out the order a game turn happens in should be with the other rules. It can be sticky noted and memorized and etc. like everything else but they put so much effort into a glitzy looking 190 page version of perhaps 50 pages of rules including campaign material.
The examples are nice, but still don't cover what you wanted seeing as you're trying to sort out how stunned even works in game.
Its not very well made. Its cool looking, it has the hallmarks of people who have gone to videogame design training of some sort. You can see how they ran the older material through a modernizer filter, it sold well enough they're a bunch of supplemental material. The one about exploring planets was so bad I didn't keep it.
Its a shallow game with a shinny coating.

I'm wondering, would anybody be interested in a "Kings of War" equivalent for Warmachine?

I feel like ever since MKII, and even Hordes really, the game has sort of abandoned being about mecha wrestling and just became this lethal, hyper competitive game about piece trading?

No edition actually fixed core problems, and just provides band aid fixes, and then throws on new problems instead.

I feel like there might be a community of people that want warmachine as this more fluffy narrativistic game with a focus on wrastling with robits and not a piece trading thing.
>>
>>98543059
I think the people who would want that gameplay are already playing Battletech
>>
>>98543068
>Battletech
Is super clunky and is about robit shooting.

The actual wrestling and melee is vestigial and shit. Battletech is about walking tanks.
>>
>>98543081
Yeah, but I don't think there's enough people who specifically care about mech wrestling to get them to play your game over Battletech, which already has mech wrestling as a side feature and is pretty popular these days
>>
>>98543109
Bummer. I mean I figure most people tried Warmachine casually, and most that left got shoved out by the tournament mindset. So I was wondering if any of those people where left.

The goal would also to be to just have a system agnostic use for the minis, as Warmachine stuff is very bespoke and hard to shove easily into other minis stuff.

>>

>as Warmachine stuff is very bespoke and hard to shove easily into other minis stuff.
This I think is the tricky part, because small number mech punching FEELS right when it has a certain amount of rules detail to it, and the steampunk and special abilities of Warmachine are fairly specific so they mesh together to make that feeling that's harder to do with generics.
There was an anon here working on a Dragonmech inspired game but haven't heard much about it recently. Its summer, people got things to do.

Kindo into that, but my goal is to make a kind of Dominions6/conquest of Elysium kind of game, and Warmachine has a lot of the bases to make it (like the mix of troops and monsters, the solos/thughs, the chaff/troops, small, mid, big and colosal monsters) it would only need some kind of paths/magical system to tackle in , I was waiting for oathmark 2 but as I would specially play it solo as the non GW scene where I live is very small (is taht or historics with the dying grognards ).

Minis neutral Warmahordes is like /awg/ holy grail.
>>
>>98543526
It kinda of is, I never cared much about rules as I'm more into the crafting of hte generated narrative of games, but I ever felt warmachine was something special than has been desvirtuated.
Wasn't Warcaster kinda of good, but didn't quite get enough wind and crashed? I think it was a cool sistem to extract value, and make it "Mini/setting neutral".
>>
Well a thought that came to me is that rather then hoping that Warmachine "finally gets good", id just design a rules agnostic Warmachine that goes back to basics and fixes them instead of running away from itself.

Things like power-up, fury, the cards repair system, have always been bandaid fixes to core mathematical issues.

I have been postulating that the Easky release will be in a similar format to the FOD one; after the new two player starter set, and probably (I hope) with a little vehicle thrown in; the Snokyr 72-r Autoped seems a likely candidate.

>>98543680
Yes, it's a super fun game with a great box of contents and there's also an awesome fantasy ruleset that runs adjacent to Baron's War called Warhost.
>>
>>98543698
I've been meaning to ask about that, I want to get into the FOD but if I ever play Quar it will be because I set up two teams for demo games. I don't have a good grasp on how lopsided is it for me to have a tractor and my opponent to not, or for them to have a big full sized one while I have the little centipede. I'm always wary of mismatches like that because I don't know how much specialist anti-armor equipment needs to be brought for it to not be a stomp one way or the other.
>>
>>98543680
I mean it depends on what you are after. If you want to do some historical skirmishes than sure.
But you can literally just write names on pieces of paper and play Horde of The Things or something with them. It depends on what you are after.
>>
>>98543756
For a demo game you probably wouldn't want either side to have any tractors just to keep the rules lighter and just have like 5 riflemen vs 5 riflemen

>>98543756
The Fynrydhad is actually pretty vulnerable, since by my reading it can't button up, since it's a single man tractor with one guy being the commander/gunner/loader/writes the theme tune/sings the theme tune, and it basically acts like an individual rhyfler; that is to say, no need to spot before firing.

It's a nice piece of mobile cover with a decent anti infantry MG, but the pilot is -only- in heavy cover, so you have to use him carefully.

Both mine got sniped out of the cupola last game, so I have my 3d printing guy run me off a Shaedyn.

"Proper" tanks are a different bag, RAW they're advised only for armour specific scenarios, but I waive that for tankettes and light vehicles, because they are nowhere near as resilient.

What the fuck
>>
So in lets say Warmachine MK B, bulletpoint ideas:

>Keep the damage grid, and retain the "system knocked out" stuff. Bouncing back from lost systems should be hard to do, but in turn getting systems knocked out should in turn be much harder. In fact destroying Warjacks, or weakening their operations should be difficult and extensive.

>With Warjacks being harder to destroy, give more stuff abilities to "wrastle" and slow them down or get them out of the way. Make power attacks (and returning the ones slowly stripped away from the game) more meaningful, and in turn make STR more meaningful.

>Infantry maybe doesn't do bonus damage on a charge? If dealing with Warjack targets, give them special maneuvers to execute. So like say Mechanithrall Swarms don't just shred warjacks, but can pile-up on them to pin them.

>Assume a baseline scenario play, but make scenarios not just point control. Execution of missions?

>Rebalance focus so that its rarer (less easy sources of empower), but powering up a Warjack is more meaningful. And don't make their basic functions a point sink.

>Id probably rework fury to be an actual risk management mechanic and not just Focus 2.0

>Let abilities be more thematic, but give someway of compensating for innate disadvantages. An issue that arose in MKII was say Undead immunities meant that using things that only affected living targets where bad. So over time you just didn't take them. Id like those thematic abilities to remain (Strangle gas), but some way of customizing your list with model agnostic options so that you can take anything and still have a chance. Maybe cards, maybe equipment you would place on the board. But also rebalance abilities to avoid the "Stealth Vs Truesight" problems.

>Stay away from colossals. They shift the game to dealing damage, instead of wrastling.
>>
>>98543059
Just play warmachine mk1, 2, of brawlmachine? Or play a narrative. Like an actual one. Plan it with your player(s) and say what the objectives are, what the limits are etc.
Warmachine has some of the fluffiest, role playing enabling rules of all the mainstreamer games even now.

For example, if you wanted to do a narrative about a new Farrow Warlord infiltrating Khador why not just play a narrative set of games where the Farrow player brings suitable units like commandos and brigands and khador plays units that defend the borders in lore, there are tonnes of them.
Each game have a fun objective and afterwards look at the narrative and what you'd really bring to the battle. Forget about the meta or crazy combos, if they happen its awesome. Don't overly plan it.

This set up works for Orgoth invading Imoren and the storm legion having to deploy forces to stop the seiging.
The sky is literally the limit, and I think we all have to accept that a single matched play game of anything using meta armies is only getting you so far. The rules in mk4 are still about wrastlin and headbutts and throws, way more than something like 40k or konflict 47.
>>
We need to cast the Warmachine players into exile.
>>
>>98544274
Warmachine hate always comes across as jealousy that it actually got popular, had lots of lore, and fun game play but lots of smaller games crumbled much faster.
I dont play warmachine but the rules look incredibly fun compared to all the flavourless generic gunk out there and some of the armies and models are very creative and would be glazed if released for any other game.

In case of the Home Guard and Kokumin Gyotai nonexistant, as neither formation took part in combat, except some units on Okinawa maybe.

>>
>>98542303

At this point I'm basically just putting them out of their misery. They deploy from the blip, they run for cover. I shot them through cover. They die.
I've had one guy die and another guy get wounded for the entire campaign so far.
That said, I've yet to deal with anything with good Toughness scores and armour yet. So we'll see what happens then.

>>
>>98544311
No, they just rolled the game under one name, to avoid confusion to new players. It was never really is own game, so the idea of having two brands that played together and had only small differences between them no sense in the long run. The last 3 armies they put out have all been Hordes armies.

Its hard to sell warmachine, because its in a weird place, a far call from what it was, expensive for what the minis are, lots of burned up players than only have bad things to say about it, but hte basic game is fun.

>>98544473
>hte basic game is fun.

>>98544457
I'd tell you it's a game with solid balanced rules, plenty of unit and model variety, and rather expansive lore... but if it's not vibing with you then none of that really matters.

What exactly HAVE you seen is a better question, and what kind of fantasy-anything appeals to you typically?
>>
>>98544490
You could to lots of crazy stuff like slaming, lots of cool power, lots of different monster (I Prefered hordes), the setting was fun, but I never played it more than a few times so I?m not the best to talk about it.
>>
>>98544313
Mk4 has fully 3d terrain they even sell 3d terrain files for most factions so you could have thematic boards.
>>
>>98544315
It's just dirty. Someone must have had it on a shelf for years, it was dirt cheap on ebay and I think it's plastic. I'll give it a bath when I paint it
>>
>>98544490
Both armies are like puzzles for the opponent to solve where most models are combo pieces that tend to interact with each other in some way and a leader model that can completely change how the whole army plays due to their array of spells, once per game super power, and innate abilities.
There's also multiple win-loss conditions, so it's not just sit on point to win or simply route to win game.

>>98544543
Mk4 in general been pushing hard both on dense and 3D-heavy terrain.
>>
>>98544235
If you want to look at how power attacks should be handled, look at MonPoc. It handles them much better.

The problem with the power attacks in early Warmachine editions was simply the cost of opportunity was to steep. Ignoring MK1's insane penalties to hit on them, you have to look at what they are trading to use them. The basic warjack was designed around having 2 attacks and having access to 3 Focus to compensate for the lack of action economy. Most of the power attacks were designed in mind that the jack would give up their initial attacks to trade for a utility of some kind, then use Focus to make up for the lost actions.

The initial issue with that is PA cost a Focus to use, so you are already done one on your extra action economy. The second issue is with the cut PAs, they were also situational. An arm lock needed your jack to have an open fist weapon, which limited what could be put on a jack weapon wise. Headbutting was trading your initial attacks for something that just helped later attacks, but you were already down 3 potential actions (I don't remember if headbutts cost Focus, but most of the time, it has being used in lieu of charging in, so Focus was still being spent to get there).

In MonPoc, the output of either a basic action or a PA is the same, so what PAs bring is situational utility that can pay off more. I remember having a game where I suplexed a monster into a building that exploded, so not only did I get the situational benefit of moving their piece over a simple attack, I compounded the damage with extra factors. Warmachine doesn't really do that outside of slams and tramples.
>>
>>98544497
>What exactly HAVE you seen is a better question
I've seen some Warjack models back when Beasts of War was still an outlet I payed attention to. Generally I'm down for just about any fantasy. At the minute we're gearing up for Age of Sigmar 1st Edition Elves vs Industry.

>>98544556
If you can give a brief example, how are these things reflected in a game of Warmachine?
>>
>>98544554
It's the old privateer press plastic, the model is a Mule. One of the more popular jacks in the army with an AoE gun that, if you can roll a critical, can do some fun pushing around of your opponent.
>>
Been some time since I heard anything from the Song of Blades and heroes, have they done anything with the game, or its dead?
>>
>>98539641
We Wargame is that you?
>>
>>98544497
The vibe thing always interests me because it's a game that has something for everyone like many great wargames do. If you like beastmen in warhammer, or orks, then thornfall alliance is a good match. Slaughterhousers are like pestigors, they have big dudes with robot claws like ork nobz.
Or if you like the silliness or orks theres trollkin. If you like nature there are orboros or old umbrey now. If you like ww1 or ww2 theres trenchers and khador stuff. Vampires covered, robots covered, pirates covered, skeleton pirates, dwarfs and more. Menoth has the religious oppression thing the imperium in 40k has down

Tell me what you look for in a miniature faction and ill try to find a warmachine army to suit
>>
>>98539563

>>
>>98544572
Thanks man. The model is really great, I might get a unit of mercenary guys like steelheads to go with him as a little display.
>>
>>98544438
what are you looking for exactly
>>
>>98544585
what is there to be done with it
isn't it ancient at this point
>>
>>98544674
Something than feels like Conquest of Elisium/Dominion 6, so a bit of cool monstes, units and "Heroes", warmachine is too imbued in the setting, and of Gods of mortals, while god, is a bit too "simple" and with no granularity and I don't quite like the basic system.
>>
>>98544568
An example would if you were playing a Hellyth army. Health is a general caster with an emphasis on boosting ranged elements in her army, as well as giving ranged protection. She can cast spells that protect your melee units from enemy fire as they move down the board, while allowing her warjacks to have an easier time hitting the enemy at range. And her once per game super is a flat debuff to nearby enemies' defense and a boost to yours.

You can then take the same army and switch her out with a different caster, like Hazaroth, and it plays completely different. Now you have a meaty beatstick caster that's all about buffing his warjacks, but doesn't bring the protection to his troops that Hellyth did.
>>
>>98544716
Conceptually that sounds rather cool. How does it typically fare in practice? I like the idea of supporting melee fighters while buffing your suppression units.
>>
>>98544759
Pretty well, almost every army has both styles (from anon's example) of gameplay supported rather extensively. For example one of armies I have are Old Umbrey, they have a leader named Maksim Azlanov who gives out free buffs to his infantry, lets them boost their own attack and damage using HIS resources, and can even bring said infantry back to life, and on top of that can replace models on death with werewolves and werebears that are a pain in the ass for the opponent to deal with. As a result it can become a question of: "do I kill his infantry who can act like mini-warcasters, and then deal with this annoying hulk coming out, or do I find other ways to deal with them." A different army I have are House Kallyss, they have both warcasters and units who can deny enemy movement, blind, and push models around, which can play around that. There's alot of push and pull in every army and it's just a highly interactive game.
>>
>>98544803
I just had a look at the store page, and the prices are pretty eye watering. Is there a generally agreed upon cheaper way of playing the game that I'm not seeing?
>>
>>98544836
Secondhand market, since a lot of people got burnt out on 3rd edition. All the old armies have rules. If you have a printer, they released a bunch of armies for print. But if you want the newer stuff, its unfortunately pricey.
>>
>>98544803
Oh yeah, this is more legacy thing, but I've been playing alot of Cross1 (Lieutenant Crosse) lately. His whole gimmick is that he has a gun that gets massive boosts from consuming souls as ammo, and when he kills with it he can gain a soul per kill. If he charges up enough souls he can do a rapid-fire of attacks, which is really fun, and his FEAT ability allows his whole army to just run and gun on top of ignoring terrain for purposes of movement (so you could walk through a building, for example, or ignore penalties from moving through terrain).
He has a spell called Lifebound. Lifebound does two things: allows the affected models to act as body-shields for models around them AND on death feeds souls back to Crosse. I typically run this spell on Devil Dogs who have dogshit defensive options and are dirt-cheap to field so it's not a big deal if they die. Thus it becomes a game where I suicide-rush devil dogs at the opponent, who hopefully do some damage off-of charge (last game they managed to almost kill a heavy troll warbeast from the charge alone) and then reap the souls when they do die to have Crosse shoot my opponents off the field.

The armies that come in box are made for 30/50 point games, and 100 is biggest size for games, so it's not as bad when looking at it from this perspective. Otherwise not really, outside of buying STL packs from MMF or playing specific legacy factions you bought off ebay.

If you want wrestling, positioning and pinning to matter more than damage, then the most important thing in my mind is that you make objectives where those matter. If the easiest way to score or stop an opponent from scoring is killing, then players will do that.

I don't remember the names of the Crisis, one let you use an energy attack if you picked up tokens, and one had civilians who you had to stop from running off.

I played with Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Drax and Quasar, they had Doc Ock, Venom, Kraven, Mysterio and Shocker iirc.

Inhuman Weaponry and... something to do with the Wedding one... "Wedding Party Targeted" that's it.

I had a game myself. Scientific Samples for Extracts (Red card) and Lockdown for Secures (Blue)
Essentially the blue objectives have one of them turn off at random every turn, whilst the Extracts give energy when you roll a Skull, and a VP if you have all of them close enough to blue tokens.

He went SHIELD with Nick Fury (jr), Nick Fury (Snr) Black Widow (2 threat), Warmachine and splashed in HulkBuster to see how well the latter two work now that they've been updated.
I went Spider-Foe's as well, with Otto, Kraven, Vulture, Mysterio and splashing in Cassandra Nova.

It didn't go well. It would have gone better if I'd realised that HulkBuster's ability to resist being pushed or thrown doesn't count Advances, like what both Mysterio and Cassandra can do. But I still don't think I would have won. Spider-Foes simply aren't in a good spot right now, even with the extra health and Mysterio going up to Medium Speed. Especially against SHIELD, who with Nick Jr is VERY squirrelly. Still, all the Stealth everywhere could have made the game turn into a hunker down, but because the Secure (Blue) Tokens kept randomly switching off and on it actually made it more mobile than a normal Secure Crisis Card.
I will say that everyone did at least have a moment of performing well, more or less, and I did manage to use all of my Tactics cards which is usually a good sign. Kraven had a tear of a turn where he moved, speared someone. Put his movement damage debuff on Nick Jr, and then forced an Eye In The Sky card out of him by playing Surprise WebHead, but couldn't move far enough to escape an angry Otto, who basically annihilated him with a good roll on his Tentacles Attack.

Ultimately he just blew threw my guys, the extra health is okay, but they definitely needed a lot more from the update.

Well, at least the faction I liked the most visually (I think it was called Everblight or something like that) seems completely gone and doesn't have a replacement. Really goes to show you how fucking stupid having an active story instead of just a setting for your miniature game is.
>>
>>98545436
I mean their current replacement is Khymera, they still exist within lore with enough thread left to re-introduce new army for them, and the rules for Everblight are in the app for both prime and legacy.

I've been working on a solo/coop scifi dungeon crawler. You build a team of 3-6 dudes who delve into abandoned spaceships/stations, lost colonies etc. and complete missions, usually looking for treasure, artifacts, data, etc.
There is enemy encounter and spawn mechanics and I have three basic enemy "factions" depending on the mission; which are 1. alien wildlife, like termanids, the flood, bug infestation, etc. 2. a large enemy, whose mechanics I have largely robbed from the Aliens™ board game, 3. Space bandits/gang/raiders/security robots.
The idea is to land or dock your drop ship, infiltrate using stealth mechanics or guns blazing, complete mission, get back to drop ship and extract. There is lots of emphasis on door breaching, hacking security systems, mini objectives like disabling security system or opening secured areas, etc. with a heavy emphasis on narrative play. I took the Spectre first aid rules where one of your guys go down and starts bleeding out you can stop the bleed and stabilize him and drag him out if he's able. If you leave without one of your dudes he will be dead forever.

Any interest in this type or game and anyone who is willing to read it over or play test it?

>GOT SKILLS? | Actions on ROGUE PLANET are a measure of skill. You’ll find no ‘buckets-of-dice’ or straight-line probabilities here. The interactive skill check system means that all players are constantly involved in the game, and you’ll need to work for the best possible tactical advantage or risk having your opponent counter you and take advantage of your failures.

>NO BOOKKEEPING! | There are no hit point boxes, extensive tables, or detailed stat tracking on ROGUE PLANET™. Not only that, but there are no chits, tokens, spell, psionic, or effect markers littering the table either. The focus is always on the miniatures, terrain, and action on the table.

>MEASUREMENT? | There are no measuring sticks, grids, rulers, centimeters, or inches used for the game. Measurements are based on the relative position of units, line-of-sight [LOS], terrain, and the in-game FX Physics Engine™.

>the WGA Egyptians are actually pretty nice
Well shit, they already have the chariots out too.
Any game that I can use them in so I don't commit another form of seppuku on my free time by starting yet another fucking Hail Caesar army? I'd use them for wargods but I want to use the actual Asar figures for them so that's a no go.

>Did it stop being skirmish based?
It didn't "stop being skirmish" per se, it's just that the game feels more like a small scale wargame to me. It's a mechanical thing.

>Because these regiments existed for propaganda purposes.
In case of the Japanese, we don't speak of a "regiment" here, but a nationwide militia, which would in its projected shape have been made of literally millions of badly equipped men and women, expected to stop the Americans from landing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_Fighting_Corps
That's by no means a "propaganda unit", and the fact that they of course took propaganda photos of the spear fighters during training doesn't change that.

Nah, I find them bland.
But the current climate is extremely conducive to witch hunting.
And boy do them witches burn.
I shall have to find a different smouldering corpse to warm my hands over.

The woman's division would have categorically been an auxiliary at most, and a propaganda formation at the least.

I think the last nation to deploy a formation of women in front line warfare was the kingdom of Dahomey.

And they got raped by Frenchmen.
Figuratively.
But also probably literally.

Five Parsecs From Home, an often recommended solo, role-playing wargame.
It was genuinely great!

When it comes to me, the writers completely lost me when they started saying

when the game has zealot christians on one side and literal murder-torture-rape demons from hell on the other.

they have lots of narrative campaigns and mission packs as well as short story packs with missions. the basic mission is just there to get you started, they have a ton more content. don't be discouraged by the haters, it's ok to like OPR

I have very niche interests. If the little rat bastard releases hellenic style Amazons, basically an improved version of the old WGF ones, I'd probably make a wall out of the boxes I'd purchase.

I sloppily painted my Brit infantry but my French aren't primed yet. I need to clean up the brits as I was just learning and kinda fucked them up. They're on the backburner. The cavalry are intimidating me.
What rules are you intending to play? It's my first dip into Napoleonics and 2x2 looked like my bag.

Frostgrave's core gameplay loop is to delve into Felstad, fight neutral hostiles, fight other wizards, grab treasure, and escape.

It's a tabletop extraction shooter.

Nah, I've actually been discussing other things in this very thread, but I compartmentalize my persecution of subhumans from my hobby pursuits.

Are you a subhuman?

Yes, and that's pretty great.
For my money, I also feel like it's more thematically coherent than Stargrave.

You can improve the Gyrocopter kit so much if you add in the tail from the bomber to the back and not use the bombs. It honestly fixes so fucking much with what's wrong on the basic Gyrocopter. It genuinely baffles me that GW thought that look was a good idea. Especially when there's a better build literally in the box, that looks way closer to the older design.
>>
>>98550990
Of course it is, since you have the one frozen city were your games take place. In Stargrave you can basically make up an entire planet your mission goes to. Frostgrave simply has the more defined background.
>>
>>98550990
What about Ghost Archipelago?
All things equal I'd prefer a tropical landscape over a tundra one. But if it results in a lower experience then I'd rather deal with tundra anyway.

>I've heard a lot less people talking about it.
I'm kinda curious about it, Frostgrave was fine, but I never got into the setting. Also, I've noticed that Stargrave has a solo mode, that appeaals to me.
>>
>>98549026
I think order tokens were be a good way good compromise between traditional war games and the Dominons style issue order before combat, then see what happens.

Commanders letting you jump out delay on the resolution order, or even switch orders. Elite/special units getting access to more orders. Spellcasters with big spells needing multiple uninterrupted turns to cast.

I think it's a design space with a lot of potential fun interactions.
>>
>>98551707
I haven't played Ghost Archipelago, but it looks pretty dope.
Heritors are overall less powerful than Wizards, and are thematically very varied, which is cool.
The Drichean expansion is cool as fuck, because relict bronze age pseudo-myceneans are just badass.
>>
>>98552506
They both do, the solo mode was developed in the frostgrave expac that focussed on the subterranean regions of the city.
The mechanical developments thereof, were then applied to an equivalent Stargrave expac; the solo material is not included in either base game to my knowledge, but my boy whatsisface used the understanding gleaned from that development cycle to create Rangers of Shadowdeep, which is basically a singleplayer/co-op rpg-lite based on the grave engine.
>>
>>98552835
Oh they've both got Solo? Tbat actually makes my interest in Frostgrave return a bit, but Stargrave is definitely my preference, I'm more of a sci fi guy.
Have you played either of them? I know that Stargraves expansion is Hope Eternal.
>>
>>98552808
GA and warriors of athena both fall flat with me because the lengths gone to to shoehorn special powers on the MC.
He should have either kept the focus on wizards for thematic divergences like that, or made the MC's regular soldier types.
>>
>>98553068
To be honest?
Yeah.
It would have made it a broader high-seas adventure type deal.

I mean, mandatory magic powers ARE kinda meh.

Like, why is it that only magic cunts that can captain a fucking boat?

Admittedly, one of the conceits of the setting is that "Heritors" are drawn to the isles because the fountain their ancestors drank from is sorta beckoning them.

But that conceit is also meh.

The maritime jungle adventure theme is neat though.
>>
>>98553105
I downloaded the books so I could use the bestiary with Frostgrave, and will be doing the same with athena, but unless he comes out with a core book for "human male fighter" then I'm sticking to Frostgrave.
>>
>>98553068
>>98553155
I've heard this same complaint expanded to Frostgrave itself since 2nd edition doesn't have any particular support for Captains aside from "1e stuff is compatible with 2e" and a lot of players want their special mundane soldier.
>>
>>98553346
I don't see the problem with that arrangement, it's clear in the case of Frostgrave that "2nd edition" is just an editorial cleanup of the original game, a FAQ adjustment that made it to print rather than being a supplemental pdf.
>>
>>98550789

"Division" - the separation between one thing, and another.
Pedantry is not the same thing as clarity.
