I'm doing a mini-diorama right now. Painting the trim as we speak. I haven't decided if the stabbed scout is going to be a blood angel, dark angel, or my homebrew chapter.
Also, freehanding is surprisingly manageable. It kind of makes decals dumber than they already are.

This could actually work for me, now that I think about it.
I could make a successor chapter with a different color scheme and then use that to justify not using the named characters / other detachments.
I'm mad I didn't think about that.

I honestly can't stand 11th edition or any of the modern stuff. But I've also never felt like any of the past editions were perfect either, there's always some standout rules that suck all the fun out of it. So I've decided I'm going to homebrew my own setup where I can pick and choose the best rules. I'd like to gather some thoughts from the old grognards here. Who knows, if it goes well maybe I'll post the first draft here.

What do you feel are the some of the biggest losses from the old editions? Morale and running away? Pinning? Vehicle facings? Weapons having short and long ranges? More character customization?

What do you think is the best version of cover? Line of sight? Wound allocation? Do you think if one model of a squad is visible that the entire unit should be able to be shot?

>>

Yes, 100%. Retard commission artists think the dramatic shading and overspray looks good to their market and stands out, and the unfortunate truth is that half of the 40K fanbase are stupid enough to fall for it because at a distance it can look rather striking. A reasonable person then looks up close and finds it's just sloppy and bad work, a sperg is still busy basedfacing over all the "cool lighting effects" they can't fathom doing themself and uses their autismbux to pay for it, or a compfag just doesn't really care and pays for the work anyway because they need an army done for a tournament

Bigger = easier to paint. Space Marines are bigger than Sisters, so BT are easier to paint.
SoB have a LOT of tiny little details that are meant to be a different color than their surroundings, and have a palette that doesn't play well with quite a few "traditional" painting tricks so they're not a good starting point. Sisters are a good "intermediate skill check," for lack of a better term.
>I don't want to be filtered by losing my first 20 games
Then don't start with Sisters, they're very "not good" in most matchups and require a good bit of knowledge of how the game works (both your army and theirs) to play with a very restrictive roster. BT are better on this front, but neither are ideal for a complete newfriend.

If you MUST pick between the two, I'd suggest Templars, but overall I'd look somewhere else entirely for a good playing experience before you learn how the game works. Blood Angels or Dark Angels would be better for a player experience to begin with, and both still play off of the gothic aesthetic a lot more than other SM chapters (DA more along the SoB sense, BA more along the traditional "religious imagery" sense).

I mean commonly sisters win rate is higher than BT.
And I have no idea why people think BT are easier, because melee infantry BT are trash. Its armored warfare BT that have been strong on and off.
While sisters you just cover the field with flamers, and then get your Paragons into the cookie jar. Using miracle dice, to make that random single melta gun do 8 damage to a rogal dorn occasionally.

Yes. O and BG, VG, SG, are all first company too. Terminators are actually those 3 units wearing terminator armor. Like how CSM terminators used to just be chosen, who took terminator armor as wargear.

However, officers could have been promoted post first company stint, so most lieutenants and all captains have terminator honors.

So there's a few pieces of advice that apply to anyone choosing an army.

1. Current meta performance doesn't matter at all. This changes constantly, some armies like eldar have been absolute menace and then just months later are bottom of the barrel. There are some exceptions however, necrons have been near the top for years straight, and of course marines have always been good and will always be good and are the gold standard for a strong but still near average army on purpose, they're a measuring stick for what is good. So don't judge by what's good.

2. That said, some armies are inherently more difficult to play. This is separate from win rate. Deldar are notorious hard to play because they're fragile and mistakes get units wiped, but they're also fast and strong and have all the tools to do well. In the hands of a skilled player, they're really good, but a noob will lose every game. So there are armies with high skill floor (deldar, eldar, sob) and there are armies with low skill floor (marines, necrons, nids). These trends generally don't change as often as meta does.

3. Hobby is forever. You're going to spend a lot more time looking at them on your shelf than you are actually playing the game, so err on the side of what looks cool when making choices about what units to buy, how to paint them, and even wargear options.

4. Don't be afraid of "difficult to paint". That just means it'll take more time to learn, that's all. Marines are notoriously easy to paint because they have large open smooth spaces, while factions with lots of detail and belts and lots of skin and many colors per model and small spaces are hard. But just go for the hard if it's the faction you like. Buy a few test models that you're ok with ruining, and practice. You can strip paint to try again. Painting, like all skills that scale with experience and knowledge, is a skill. Repetitions and research from painting guides will work, just have patience.

The God Emperor is an actual divinity, and thus has always existed in the warp. He guided the shamans who were reborn into the child that would be adored by trillions for ten thousand years and thus spawn Himself in a recursive loop.
Those things affect present, past and future. It's how the Egyptians knew of Horus - the heresy was so violent it echoed into the collective myths of the past.

It's logical. Chaos is self-destructive, so any species that fall entirely to chaos would cease to exist. Being a raging khornate berserker is not conducive to raising a family. And, on top of that, Chaos currently has 9 Chaos legions making for nearly 1 million Chaos marines, who are all rabidly xenophobic against everything that isn't human and will gladly exterminate xenos for fun, along with their similarly xenophobic mortal Lost and the Damned followers.

I'm taking at least one Caladius with me and just hoping I won't need the second, lethality is a concern since enough brute force can already tear through TEQ statlines and I'm aware of just how hard Canis Rex can punch. Mostly thinking about playing around the terrain, since the rules are a bit abstract this time around and knights get a bit of brevity there, but at least the tank can technically fly over ruins so maybe I can do a gotcha.

I don't recommend shading for skin to beginners.

Get bugmans glow, cadian flesh shade and kislev flesh
Basecoat bugmans, mix in cadian to go over again, avoiding the deepest recesses. Continue this process going lighter and lighter.

Skin colour+wash usually just ends up looking shit imo.

Starting from white is just agony unless the model is predominantly white. Go grey/black.

I was reading some Warhammer forum and a guy was complaining that FNPs "slow the game down" and should just be removed and replaced with the mathematical wounds increased and it made me kinda sad that this efficiency is what 40k is now. I always thought FNPs were among the most fluffy things in the game.
>>
>>98541880
Faggots like that should go play OPR if they want fast games so much.
>>
>>98541880
The worst part is there are so many better things to trim if you wanted to actually speed the game up. Like rerolls. Or datasheets being crammed with abilities. Or having a complex measuring, card drawing and rolling ritual just to start a game. FNPs aren't even close to ubiquitous to think about getting rid of them.
>>
>>98541880
He was probably playing a faction without easy access to FNP and was facing an opponent who spammed swarms with 6+ FNP and thought it was stupid
>>
>>98541880
>>98541898
I guarantee that's the case. He's salty he lost to an army with FNP and is trying to rationalize it.

I know this is rather offtopic, but I find it kinda silly how in 40k, militaries are still fighting with swords and shields when you have highly advanced firearms.
The newly issued rifles of the German army (G95), United States army (XM7) and surely many other armies does not even come with a bayonet lug anymore, because people realized melee is literally never a factor in firefights and if you happen to be just a few feet away from someone you can still just shoot him.
Somebody carrying a highly advanced laser rifle and a 14th century long sword just clashes imo. I noticed this especially when building my Sororitas. Lightsabers like in Star Wars, sure, Chainswords are cool, but middle ages swords, axes and shields next to an Atom-Pulverizer 9000, just rubs me the wrong way desu.
Anyone feels what I'm saying or am I retarded like usual.

In the case of sororitas and astartes, the swords they use are power swords, which do have a power source and cut through materials like a hot knife through butter.

There are also a few cases where deamons and others have a field around them that mitigates ranged weapons, but shoving a knife into them still works since they have to reach in and out of their own field as well. Similar logic behind star wars and star trek shields, you can walk through, but you can't fire a fast moving projectile.

So yes it's silly to run at someone with a sword when guns exist, but there's at least a couple nods to it in the lore. The fancy swords are high tech, and shield tech/warp sorcery is such that melee overcomes some ranged barriers.

This sort of thing exists in every scifi work though. Realistically speaking, every military space vessel would be a hyperdense sphere with as low profile as possible, yet in star trek and star wars and the like every ship is fancy looking and comes in all kinds of shapes. And if a civilization is capable o near-light speed, then they are also more than capable o interstellar warfare where all combat is simply launching kinetic payloads at each other's homeworlds over distances of millions of lightyears and space warfare would be over holding ground only. So you never escape this sort of anti-realism, it just is what it is. I don't mind it, suspending disbelief for the sake of rule of cool is fine.

>>
>>98541915
Given the effective range of the guns and the movement speed of the characters, I'd say that there's nothing silly about carrying a sword. When everyone is running around like sonic the hedgehog and a dude with a jetpack has the same threat radius as your rifle, I'd say a sword is a good choice.

As for them rotating out of being used, that rarely happens. Guys like Eldrad and Asurmen and Guilleman and all this aren't going anywhere. - We did not need yet another huge model, for fuck sake, I hate this scale creep, power creep, and price creep.
- The original rumor of an old melee based dread, that would contrast with the more polished look of contemptors, deredeo and leviathans, like a furribundus remake, would have been much, much better. I'd rather they had given small old angry killer boxes, than a space marine mini-knight.

My first SW project is still in boxes; I've got some terminators, SW & regular, with the intent on making modern reimagining of the old metal wolfguard terminators. I still have to grab logan grimnar to convert him into the leader since he has a very similar pelt.

Space wolves got a bad rep, and while I could see a chapter leaning harder on vikings/celts, I'm more interested in an oldschool barbarian look, I like patterns like picrel.

I've seen pictures of a conversion kit around that made the Redemptor's armour panels a bit more boxy-looking, which seems to alleviate the look somewhat. And most of the Heresy dreads were FW models, so they still have a bit of Midhammer to them even with newer sculpts.

Functionally kind of redundant and comes off as someone compensating for having a green-eyed monster in the Telemon, of which is actually good. The giga nigga has like ten pieces per foot and a lot of detail underneath those pauldrons as well on top of magnet holes, so I imagine someone liked designing it at least.

Saturnine Dreads cost way too much for what they do, you'd be better with rifleman Contemptors, Deredeos, or just simply a tank, of which the Kratos is the metafag pick. The termies at least got pretty nasty with the Word Bearers variant though. Still, a pity these aren't eligible for Legends rules here, released past the arbitrary cutoff.

The rules are lazy and boring, feels like some dude winging it and failing at it becaue he's just clueless.
The modeling department on the other hand is proper retarded, as in making counter-productive stupid decisions that give normal people aneurysms.

Termiantors are made in a way they can be easily customizable. This is not used outside of swapping torsos and the usual bits (arms & heads).
It'd be extremely easy to make primaris marine torsos interchangeable, so would it be for the chins. They didn't think of the first and the second isn't even consistent in the same kit.

That, is proper retardation.

Long time GW hobbyist and current lead designer on the 40k modelling team I think. Used to have a personal YouTube channel featuring his painting but I think GW made him nuke a lot of it when he got hired. Only model I remember him taking direct credit for more recently was Vashtor.
>>
>>98543307
>there is literally nothing wrong with the special weapons sprue
If I want to get 10 meltaguns and 10 flamers, I shouldn't have to buy 40 other weapons.

The practice is simple:
>I want to get A
>To get A I need to buy the box which has A and B
>Now that I'm done with A, I have B leftover
>So to use B, I have to buy C
>I should have just paid for A, but instead I end up paying for A, B, and maybe even C.
The above is even worse in HH because the norm is 3k points, so you'll have a ton of leftovers if you don't make express use of everything. (So if you buy a special weapon pack, you build 6 different special weapon squads)

There is nothing preventing GW from releasing a blister with 10 flamers. Some weapons came that way, even basic bolter patterns.

But to be fair, I wouldn't be opposed to the old system since we're talking 40k, because if I needed a plasmagun, I at least got one in my tactical squad. The only issue came with units like devastators, because then I'd need to buy 2 for a full loadout. But that's it. Don't have this problem anywhere, and I can always use the extra devastator bodies as more tacticals or whatever, it was easy as pie to make a tactical into an officer, or an assault marine, or a devastator.

That's what's so stupid, GW created problems, and then added more problems to "fix" the first problems.

Anon they're packaged like that because its cheaper for GW to make 1 sprue with everything than 6 sprues with 1 thing each.
Those sprues all need their own molds and molds are expensive. If GW makes 6 molds that each make 10 of a single special weapon but no one wants flamers or whatever them they've wasted a shitload of money and their finite warehouse space for nothing.
Sticking all the guns in one box means they don't have to worry about that. Everyone who wants any special weapon will buy a box.

That there are people who want an easy to build drop pod. There are people who build WW1 destroyers, 16th century gallions, WW2 tanks. Kits that ask you to fiddle with brass and etchings to get a good result, folks with entire train set-ups made to look as photo-realistic as possible, gluing tiny leaves on tiny paths under tiny trees.

But 40k kiddies? God forbid the kit has features. It should come in one piece, pre-painted, because who cares about nerd shit like "hobbying", we want to spend 6 hours throwing buckets of dice and uno-reversing the other guy before going home since we couldn't even get to the end of round 3.

>>
>>98543451
People complaining about the old kit aren't people that are gonna buy the new one. I can assure you neither of them got the new pods because they fucking suck as models and the rules fucking suck so no one wants them as cheap game pieces either.
>>
>>98543454
I'd rather them be autotakes than be the only person I've seen using them (1 because more is just throwing the game for no reason) in the last 10 years.

Just because it's nicknamed heresy pattern doesn't mean it was ever the most common or representative of the time.
>>
>>98543501
Not the point
>>
>>98543503
Yes the point. Every other pattern except corvus had priority and corvus gets bonus points for being the original.

Easiest thing to do is start the pauldrons with an off white like ushabti, do your shade wash, and then drybrush a brighter white over it.

>>
>>98543518

No?? MkV is not just emblematic but also representative of the heresy, that's why it's named heresy too.
Not only are you disregarding that fact, but then you're also pulling shit about what armor was the most common or representative. At least back up your bullshit.

Again, not only is it the least common pattern even during the heresy, it's not really important to the conflict itself. It's perfectly logical that it's getting made the last because every other pattern had more relevance.

1: no abominable intelligences. So you need a human drone pilot. So it's quicker to just send a human with a gun

I got a Dawn of War box for cheap but I don't even play Muhrines. Do I just sell it or just paint the models as a custom chapter. I'm thinking of collecting CSM, maybe do a conversion. Chaplain can become a Dark Apostle, though I'll need two additional cultists for that. Judiciar can lose the Hourglass and swap for a head, and be a master of executions.
>>
>>98543243
>Souping up stuff guard WITHOUT needing a detachment would also be nice.
LOGICALLY if GSC can use Patriarch and Purestrain without Final Day, they should also be able to use Brood Brothers and low-tier IG equipment (with BB headswaps) or the GSC Leman Russ without the BB detachment.

The BB detachment literally allows them to use fucking Baneblades lol.

>>
>>98543615
It's not worth it because no one is gonna buy it. Like it'll sit there for years while they "I know what I got" it, but no one's gonna buy. And that's why ebay is fucking retarded. In a normal market you want to sell the products you have so you adjust the price until you find a buyer. You're not gonna find a buyer like that, but hey do whatever.
>>
>>98541255
Given that they just killed the Shokkjump Dragsta there's a good bet they're going out of their way to not have Precision in ork army lists.
>>
>>98543642
Oh so what you wanna do is sit on the box a few months to when they're sold out again, because that's the point where the price of of the Judiciar will be like 70 bucks on ebay instead of 25 like it is right now. The special characters ranging from 50-70 and then the less special ones about 40-50 for 3, you can get like 250 bucks from the box from retards by not dumping all the models now when they're cheap.

I think in 7th or 8th Edition, GSC had a Leman Russ in its roster as a native unit. It was Leman Russ + Upgrade Sprue.

It was for 29 Yuropoors only for lots of models, so I just did. I'm a GSC player myself and thought they'd be a nice hobby project. But now that I'm thinking of getting a few CSM stuff, I'm not sure what to do with them. I guess I can still paint them and use them in Boarding Actions.

I don't know if my confederate guard are going to work out the way I want
The gray I had chosen for the armor panels is too weak vs. the brown of the fatigues so it all washes together
I'll finish the paintjob with shading and edge highlights to see if I can salvage it, but it's not promising so far
Is there anything I can do beyond highlights/edging to make complementary/similar colors sit next to each other on a model and still stand out against each other? That's the only Idea I can come up with.
Also fuck Army Painter grays, they're all absurdly watery and need like 4 coats to actually cover an area
>>

Any color I have on-hand is either an olive drab from US Bolt Action minis, or a dark red/burgundy/AP Mulled Berry from painting SoB. I figure the olive drab is too samey and the reds feel like they clash too much.
Maybe a teal color would go well? Color theory and so on.
>>98543783
Kek
Wrong Confederate, I'm basing them on the uniforms and stylings of US Civil War Confederates, "butternut" fatigues/gray armor was the original plan. Lots of infantry holding the line and daring (mechanized) cavalry charges to break our foes.

i think that a crisis suit & co. concentration was always implied to be the height of what they can muster in the way of a max-lethality point force, it's what i'm up to even if an infantry complement is included in the project

fireblade breacherfishes exist and they're frankly a little nuts and come off as the hardest a fire warrior can go in the mechanized infantry mode of things

>Also fuck Army Painter grays, they're all absurdly watery
That's unusual, AP paints are made thicker than other brands and are loaded with extra white pigment for opacity. I've got Deep Grey and it's way thicker than all the AK greys I use (reddish, deep sea, intermediate blue, rubber black) and needs fewer coats over black, light grey and brown primers.
>>
>>98543764
Like with mordians you can paint the metallic parts in metal or bronze.
>>
>>98543127
I'm working on the same one
>>
>>98543789
What are you talking about lol
>>
>>98543822
I started with Uniform Grey over a black primer, and I'm still seeing black in the middle of big panels after 2 coats. It feels extremely watery, but I might have done it to myself by over-wetting my wet palette as well. That's probably the actual problem.
AK Reddish Grey was thin, but was a solid color by 2 coats in, I'm not having that with AP Uniform Grey, despite putting them both in the same wet palette.
>>98543829
Bronze is a good idea, I'll do a test with a bronze and another with a brass to see which I prefer. I think bronze might be too close to my brown for buckles, but it might work for weapon fittings and ornaments on the armor.
Thanks anon

I'm keeping the dream of Dicksie alive, just in the teething phase of deciding how I'm painting them. Misspelling intentional, that's my homebrew planet name. I liked when 40k planets were obvious with their inspiration, so I'm keeping with the tradition.
I'm thinking I'll try adding a third color as an accent (beyond leather for straps/boots and khaki for gaiters), and if that doesn't work I'll redo the gray in a darker shade.
If I decide to add Kasrkins to my list I'm painting them up as Zouaves.
