Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency. If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:>n00b DM's Guidehttps://pastebin.com/EVvt6P0B>n00b Player's Handbookhttps://pastebin.com/XALkXkV0>Troves, Resources, Blogs, etc:http://pastebin.com/9fzM6128>Need a starter dungeon? >>98552297Kill yourself, Fishfag.
>>98552341KYS troll, the OP text is an easy comparison.
>>98552297>>98552341Fuck off fishfag. This is the real thread with the proper OP text and original pastebing.

>>98553179I don't like his take on the chainmail man-to-man table. At the same time I don't like how the original table have no progression based on the character level.
>>98550025>>98551638Why no major water features other than a single river? Personally, I like water features and interacting/exploiting them. They offer interesting dynamics. how about you, /osrg/? Your thoughts on maps without water?
>>98553307Well, the original table's progression is that you get more attacks as you level up. I don't know off the top of my head what one extra attack equates to on average as a bonus on 2d6, but it's petty solid anyway.Did you check out 7VoZ? That has a take on the MtM combat table which incorporates leveling.>>98553404I think it's an interesting take. It's for sure unusual, most maps are coastal for wahtever reason, but Outdoor Survival is notably landlocked so in a way it's a return to roots.
>>98553439Yeah but the bonus apply only against 1hd or less monsters>7VoZHave some good ideas (and bad ones) but definately too many tweaks for me
>>98553689>Yeah but the bonus apply only against 1hd or less monstersWell, if you want to be like that about it, so does the Man-to-Man table technically. It replaces Mass Combat, so you'd only be fighting lower than Hero-types on that table. Everything else would go on the Fantastic Combat Table.
I went ahead and ordered FMAG out of curiosity. It got here surprisingly quick, and I really like the art. It gets me in a creative mood, like when I first read DCC. I hope I can get my friends interested in OSR style gaming, I've become really enamored with it on paper. Been trying to hype myself up to run something for most of the year. I ran MoSh for one friend and he complained so bitterly (he's a PF2E autist) it's really put me off running games for anyone.
>>98554890Eat shit, retard troll.
>>98555321Hey, he moved from NuSR shit to one of those OD&D not-quite-clones, that's progress in the right direction, anon. Also if you think he's a troll, report and hide, replying to trolls makes you a dumbass.
Fomalhaut #15 is out (in paper form)https://beyondfomalhaut.blogspot.com/2026/08/zine-echoes-from-fomalhaut-15-gardening.html?m=1
>>98555321>>98554890Where's the trolling on his part there? FMAG is a pretty standard, reasonably popular OD&D clone.
>>98555361Awesome. Always appreciate an update on new Melan material: thanks.
>>98555321What? FMAG is an OSR game, it's a 0e clone.
>>98554890Nice! Which cover did you get? I have to admit I can't really remember the interior art, but OD&D is always a good time. I also find it much more creativity-inducing than any other edition.>>98555345>>98555369>>98555514Maybe Anon confused it with FMC? I agree though, this was an unwarranted spergout on Anon's part. Anon just mentioned that a bad experience with the player in a non-OSR game put him off refereeing in general.
I'm reading Moldvay's Basic for the first time. I just started so I haven't hit any of the stuff that causes the "oh my god, it's beautiful. I get it now" reactions I see here and there. But it's already selling me on race as class. The way it's laid out here, the trade offs of either playing a human with a defined class or a race with unique positives and negatives is really interesting. I figured separating race and class would be something I'd change without even thinking when I went to run this with friends. Nah, I'm doing at the very least one session with it to see how it feels.
>>98556329Yes, Race-as-class is cool. There are some negative nancies, but they're almost always buildfag players crying that they can't wombo a combo.
>>98555747The one with the lizard people menacing the small group of adventurers. It was a tossup between it and the B+W one, but it's like $5 so I might grab that as an at-the-table reference.I do have the pdfs of the 3LBB, but I like having something I can hold in my hand and I didn't feel like printing them out. Anything to reduce screen time.I've been buying OSE stuff, but the more I look, the more 0e calls to me.
>>98556746Nice! Good luck to you. OD&D is a fine edition (if badly edited in the original).
>>98556329>>98556368My only issue with race as class is that I makes it so there is only one kind of each demihuman adventurer. What ACKS does by making racial classes both allows for variety in demihuman roles while also making them pay for their advantages while keeping flavor.
>>98558468Preach. It's the harder road than both race-as-class and race-as-set-dressing but man are the results satisfying.
>>98542127>How is 17 accidentally 75% of 18 on a d20 roll-under? I'm sure I'm just being a midwit but idgi.Sorry, I was away from my computer for a while. On d20 roll-under, >17 fails 4/20 times and >18 fails 3/20 times. They're different at a 3:4 ratio, which is huge.
Does anyone have the OSE Demonic Grimoire? I don't think it's in the trove with the 2026 core books.
Any big happenings over the past few weeks? I've been absent.
>>98558468OSE does this too in some of the books.
>>98561258Melan announced a DM guide, not much else news-wise
>>98558468Beyond the Wall had a good suplement for this as well just flat out called Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings that does a few different sorts of Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings with the typical BtW playbook style.
>>98561258Yeah, Melan's refereeing guide is the main thing. Relatedly the EU wastepaper directive came into force and may or may not have fucked up shipping within the entire EU (but not outside).
One of my players asked me a question yesterday, and though I gave an immediate response, it certainly did get my noggin joggin. Does furniture from an evil temple still give off an evil aura? Is it cursed? I'm not talking about evil idols or semi-magical artifacts that have obvious symbols of chaos. I mean things like the chairs in a necromancer's lair or the bed and side table that an evil cleric sleeps in.I want to encourage my players to ransack places and sell the stuff they don't want. And it's always been common practice in my games for players to build or secure fortifications (Usually about mid-way towards domain level, to give them a leg up once it becomes time to start building REAL castles and keeps of their own.) And I like offering them graph paper where they can draw out the floor plans and show me exactly where they want to put that new owlbear rug, or nudey painting of the former queen, or trapped chest that they just recovered from a dungeon. But I don't know if I want them to worry about whether that bed of the Devil worshipper cultist is going to make them possessed or not.
>>98562879>does regular furniture have an aura of evil? I'd rule no. It might have some stigma if you're trying to sell it but it was never the couch that was evil.
>>98562879I don't think I'd have it be evil unless somebody connected to it died violently close to it, that might be more haunted than evil though. If players want to yank out the dagger that's pinning the necromancer's mummified corpse to his throne, toss the body unceremoniously on the floor, maybe spit on it, and then drag the throne back home to use it because the skull motif looks cool, they might be in for something, but otherwise, furniture is furniture.
>>98562879Just say the cleric or a local priest can say a prayer over it and it'll be fine.In real life I was dating a girl in college and she insisted I come down over the holidays for a weekend to stay with her at her parent's house where she was still living while not in school, and I was reluctant at first because we'd only gone on a couple of dates and I wasn't comfortable being subjected to parental scrutiny that soon nor being a guest in a stranger's home. But she insisted it, so I acquiesced. That night on the first day I was shown to the room I was to sleep in, which had a really large bed with an expensive-looking carved wooden frame and headboard. I was too tired to read the book I'd brought, so I flipped the switch and got in the bed, and...just...couldn't...fall asleep. It felt like someone was next to me intently staring at me, so after about fifteen minutes I jumped up, flipped on the switch, and sat on the end of the bed and read my book the rest of the night, despite it feeling like someone was staring at my back. She got up very early and must've noticed the light along the edges of the door, so she quietly knocked and I opened the door and she came in and asked me if I was awake all night, and I whisper sharply, "Yeah!?" and I gestured toward the bed and told her what I had felt, and she looked down for a moment and replied, "Oh, well...my cousin committed suicide in that bed." "In THAT bed in this room?!?" "No, no, not that mattress, and not here. But that WAS the frame his bed was in." "Why wouldn't you tell me that?!?" So I ended up sleeping out in their living room the rest of the weekend.
>>98563179Congrats on avoiding your random encounter with a wraith, shade or shadow anon. Hope you got some decent head out of it.
>>98563194Yes, but she had bipolar disorder, and you know the rest of the story...
>>98563194To this day I still don't understand why they would keep that bed frame. Even if you don't believe in the supernatural, it's still an object that would remind you of an unhappy memory.

>>98561245I don't think the full PDF is out yet.
Anyone use target 20 over thac0? Did you find it slotted in well?
>>98565565Backers got access at the same time they got the core PDFs.
>>98563179>>98563286Any item can hold memories or impressions. The older the item, the more likely it is to have some resonant emotional impression lingering. That being said, I'd rule that there is a 10% chance of some lingering imperssion per valuable piece of furniture, with the majority of those being neutral. Not many people have strong emotional connections to armoires, ottomans or standing closets. In regards to selling furniture looted from evil lairs, I'd say it depends on the furniture, but for the most part a simple blessing would clear up any lingering issues. Now, if they are trying to offload items made of fresh human leather and bone, that's a different story.
>>98566117Yup, got them. I feel like a fool though, I thought I will get the books on drivethrurpg and get all the future updates as well. Instead, it appears I'm an Exalted Funeral Press's hostage now and my access to future updates is dependent on them.

>>98566248>>98563179>>98562879I asked my wife, (Who is a professional ghost hunter,) about what her thoughts were on this subject, and she basically agrees. She shared the various thoughts and going theories on how this supposedly works, and she said that it basically comes down to your perception of the object or the emotions that were once tied to the object.
>>98568516>a professional ghost hunterDoes she make the spooky ghost noises herself, or does she have a flunky to do that in the other room, like Zach Baggins?
>>98568586It's actually pretty interesting. She does it more from a historical/folk-lore perspective (combined with urban exploration.) In her many years of hunting (First as a hobby, and now as part of an actual organization,) she's only ever found about a half-dozen pieces of evidence that could be considered "supernatural", and she doesn't post them all over social media.Basically, what she does is, calls around to various old businesses and residences and asks if it would be okay to ghost hunt there. Also, she picks up jobs from the organization that the higher ranking ghost hunters either don't want or can't get to. I, personally, find it boring as fuck. But she likes it and makes a moderate amount of cash on each job.
>>98568647what are they paying her for? Gathering evidence?
>>98568647So she's there to give a stamp of approval for hotels and stuff to say "we have a ghost, a real pro ghost hunter said so" for the tourism bucks, huh? I guess that's a racket you could make money off of
>>98568647Somehow there's something very comical about a low-ranking ghost hunter who only gets to hunt the lame ghosts that the higher-ups don't want.
>>98568764She does a bunch of different things related to the paranormal. Gathering and analyzing evidence, then presenting it to the business/home owner. She also does ghost tours and public lectures on her experiences. (She goes to colleges each year and talks to students about modern American folklore, the spiritual movement of the late 1800s/early 1900s, and cryptozoology.)>>98568771That's definitely an aspect of it. A lot of times it's either making people more aware of a business and giving them that "Haunted!" tag, but more often than not, she goes there and tells them "Dude, nothing happened the entire time we were there. You just have loud neighbors."Most recently she did a residential case where a family reported violent activity. With what they found and the previous history of the house, they hope that it can either put the family at ease or give them info to call a priest or pastor or whatever they feel will get rid of the situation. (We live in the south, and people here still largely believe in ghosts and spirits.)>>98569809Hey, they can't all be Zach "Go in the other room and make scary sounds while I record" Baggins
I'm using Scarlet Heroes to play OSR D&D solo. How should I go about ruling henchmen in Scarlet Heroes, as it's not really addressed much in the rulebook itself? On one hand I don't want henchmen or followers to be overpowered, but on the other hand I don't want them to be completely vulnerable based on how damage is handled for NPCs...
>>98571378I'd treat them as per B/X, unless they're coming up against enemies with SH fray dice, it's not a problem IMO. And you can always roll damage for them normally.
>>98571378I'm with Anon: unless the rulebook states otherwise, simply treat them as normal characters that don't have the hero benefits.
I'm looking for fairly recent campaign settings to spice up my OSE landscape. Physical hefty books only so I can read it without burning my eyes. No mega-dungeons. No old classics, it's just too hard and expansive to source a physical copy.So far I have found:-Dolmenwood (obviously)-Rackham Valley (OSE)-The Valley of Flowers (OSE)-The Painted Wastelands (OSE)-Dark Albion/Baptism of Fire (OSE)-Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland (OSE)-Gods of the Forbidden North (OSE)-Outcast Silver Raiders - Mythic North (OSE)-The Dark of Hot Springs Islands (agnostic)-Neverland/Oz/Wonderland (5e)Any opinion on those? Or anything to add to the list? I don't know if the Dolmenwood campaign book can be played without the Dolmenwood monster book tho.
I'm trying to expand my LotFP campaign with some nice books to decorate my mom's basement with. No dungeons or overland adventures because when I see a map with a grid or think about miles of empty space away from the diversity of the big city I get kind of anxious. so far I have found:> Veins of the Earth (obviously) > Faecal Lands (LotFP)> Towers Two: Never Forget Edition (LotFP) > Planet Piss (LotFP)> Fuck For Satan (LotFP)> Carcosa: Child Predators of the Voidlands (LotFP)> Fish Fuckers (LotFP) > Cha'alt (Knave I think?)> Vermis 1,2,3 (agnostic) > Dungeons and Daddies: Not a BDSM Sourcebook (5e) Any opinion on those? Or anything to add to the list? I don't know if the Carcosa book can be played without the Raggi's Guide to Sexual Violence book tho.
Been getting into BX clones namly OSE but i got a copy of basic fantasy just for fun Ive never played any version of DnD before the clones but these games are fun :D
>>98573709Yoon-Suin (2e) is an obvious omission. Many of the ones on your list are also shit to kinda shit.
>>98573709
>>98573931Craze of the Blue-Haired Queer Wokester (LotFP) is an obvious omission. Many of the ones on your list are also good to excellent.
>>98574196Apart from Khosura, CSIO, and whatever the fuck Macris's one is called, are there any other cities-cum-dungeon underneath?Bonus points if>They feature a bunch of entrances throughout the city, like CSIO and Khosura but unlike the ACKS one.> It's a relatively big city with lots of details on the surface city, bordering on the building-by-building, like CSIO but unlike Khosura.
>>98574076BFRPG is my favorite OSR game. I ran 65+ weekly sessions over the past couple years. It's a pretty decent framework, but I gotta admit that it isn't perfect. The bullshit that people espouse here about the treasure and dungeon generation is actually true but overblown. The much worse problem with BFRPG is that as you play it, you will have to parse out your own answers or mechanics for things that have already been addressed in other systems. If you have to write your own rules supplement to fill in the blanks, then you do have to question why you aren't just using something else. But if you're willing to write a little packet or rules supplement to explain how you want to handle things or what optional rules you're using, then it's definitely worth your time.I really like BF1 Morgansfort. I used it as the base for my campaign, and the players ended up having a full-blown war with demi-humans from the surrounding areas. Very cool stuff.
>>98573709Into the Weird & Wyld is not bad, the city one is bad though. Gods of the Forbidden north and Outcast Silver Raiders both looked like trash when I downloaded them, not worth getting hard copies of. Reach of the Roach God and Yoon Suin are both great large books.
>>98574129>I am le blasé.Thanks for the Yoon-Sui omission. Can you single out the not so shitty one to me? At first glance I had the impression Neon Lords and Outcast Silver Raiders are Kickstarter-bait and Gods of the Forbidden North was trying too hard. Didn't check out yet but it might be Dark Albion and Baptism by Fire fall into that category too?>>98574196Oh. I was aware of the Fomalhaut zines but somehow missed this book. Thanks.>>98574246What's CSIO?>>98575004Thanks, I'll check Into the Wyrd and Wild and Reach of the Roach God too then.

>>98574856As i said i mainly use my digital copies of OSE since i like race as class and like all of the classes added into OSE and CCAs ive said ive actively avoided DnD for as long as ive been playing rpgs (im 23 so like 7 years or so) and have only now built my small collection of booksWhat attracted me to retroclones was the classes and stuff and i have no problem having to adjust or add rules cuz if i truly feel im not having fun i can easily port characters and campaigns into ICRPG and keep OSR style dungeon crawling and suchI love the DIY nature of these games for that reason
>>98575413>ICRPGIs this bait?
>>98575355Reach of the Roach God is unobtaimium sadly. I gave CSIO a quick search and it's old timey classic I can't be bothered to pay collector price for. Good news is there was a Goodman Gaming KS to make a new print in 2025. Let's hope it will it retail once ready and not just backers only.Anyway I gave a try to Khosura. Do you guys know if the Hungarian Post is still delivering mails by horse cart lel?
>>98575501You know you can just POD things, right?
I'm not well versed in OSR but I often read stuff like ''Combat is a fail state'' and ''you shouldn't be rolling''. What does that look like in practice?
>>98575475No its not i like the gameUr free to not like it And ofc im not gonna mention it much in this thread since the entire point was if i was truly not enjoying the mechnics of the retroclone i could just play something else with the same classes i likeBasically i'll play what i like you play what you like
>>98575519Those are kinda memes, they have origins in decent analysis but have been boiled down to a single pithy saying that is taken out of context and often goes full retard."Combat is a fail state" was intended to mean "combat is not the thing you're out here to do." You're out for treasure, combat is a tool you might use to get it, but you generally want to first look for ways to get the treasure without the attending risks and costs of combat, because you generally get crap XP from fighting stuff. This has deep implications for player behavior and the type of story you get at the table, vs later editions where monsters are just XP pinatas that players are looking to beat on."You shouldn't be rolling" is trying to say that rolling dice carries risks of failure, and lots of people in TTRPGs roll the dice too often, which can get comical fast. Instead you want to maneuver into situations where your success is assured and no dice rolls are needed; this is a player skill, and there's a fair bit of emphasis on player skill in the OSR gaming culture.
>>98575548Nta but this is kind of the draw of why i took to OSR-style of play even if i only just now started delving into retroclones proper I love the creative thinking of trying to get out of situations without just trying to punch, dodge, and parry my way out
>>98575548How often do you find a fight is just not skippable?
>>98575636Some encounters will be guaranteed hostile, like some faction's patrols, hunting beasts, undead, mindless guardians, etc. But most (70% or so, I'd guess?) things you could run into in my campaign will get a reaction roll and so may not attack, and might even be open to trade or whatnot. Even if the encounter turns hostile, you've always got the evasion and pursuit rules. (My players like jamming iron spikes in doors to stop pursuers, and won't go into a dungeon without them anymore, lol.)
>>98575827>(My players like jamming iron spikes in doors to stop pursuers, and won't go into a dungeon without them anymore, lol.)Anyone who claims an encounter was unavoidable didn't bring enough caltrops. This is a fact, not an opinion.
>>98575503There's no Print on Demand option for those. At least not in Europe. Or maybe you meant bringing my digital copy at a regular printing shop?Printing it myself at home is just not the same: I did that for half a dozen classic TSR modules to stuff them in a binder and it's cumbersome. Once opened during session it clutters my DMing space and when reading in my bed I can't really lie on my back. Not being overly picky or coooonsuming here: I splurged for the OSE classic set around 4 years ago and didn't buy anything else since. I just felt it would be nice to broaden my scope with an inviting well made hardback book that might entice new players.
>>98575636At my table it's never unskippable. You might free it, or get someone else to take care of it, or trap it or bury it or bait it or serve it etc.
>>98575827>But most (70% or so, I'd guess?) things you could run into in my campaign will get a reaction roll and so may not attack, and might even be open to trade or whatnot. "What type of conversation is used for these encounters? "Hey, hi. What are you doing here? Fellow treasure hunters, huh? Shake on it, and good luck! *Heigh-ho music intensifies*". I'm asking because, at least in the version I play, the rules state "Monsters will automatically attack and/or pursue any characters they "see," with the exception of those monsters which are intelligent enough to avoid an obviously superior force."
>>98576085That sounds like a dumb rule. Once the players catch on they will just set up ambushes and have one guy bait all the monsters into them. Doesn't it get monotonous?
>>98575004Isn't it impossible to buy a copy of Reach now, after Zedeck had his little melty?
>>98575501>Do you guys know if the Hungarian Post is still delivering mails by horse cart lel?No but the new EU directive on paper waste in shipping might be fucking his shit up. Melan wrote about it on his blog. I'm optimistic that he'll surmount the difficulties, however.
>>98576158A rule that is even dumber than starting to chat with the enemy by asking them: 'Hey, excuse me, could you not attack us?'.As for ambushes, sending a character ahead or splitting the party is dangerous. The player might end up getting ambushed themselves, or the enemy might send only one or two companions in pursuit...
>>98575636It depends on the referee and to a lesser extent on the designer of the dungeon. Undead encounters will typically not be talkable, but sneaking your way past a zombie should be easier than average (and so should just running if your cover gets blown; they don't have a good movement rate). A good game will allow more solutions, but you shouldn't be able to dodge everything, either.>>98576085>What type of conversation is used for these encounters?Depends on the encounter.>Intruders! Do not trespass on orc turf, or you will be destroyed! Begone from here! Turn back! We kill you!>Tasty morsels... leave one behind, the rest can pass, yes? Pay troll toll. Gobbets not stupid, not fight.>A-hem. We have been stationed here by His Majesty Lego-Ass the Cubic, king of the elves! This underground realm is his territory and if you wish to enter, you must agree to pay a tithe of all treasures monetary and otherwise upon leaving. Shirking the tithe will be met with sanctions! Attacking the representatives of His Majesty is to declare war on the elf nation!>*skeletons attack wordlessly*And so on and so forth.
>>98576202The enemy wouldn't do that, the rule says that all monsters automatically attack and pursue characters on sight.
>>98576241Valid examples, thanks. Obviously, if there are enemy guards, it's clear they will act accordingly; my only doubt is regarding orcs, as they usually love taking prisoners to torture them...
>>98576265That's why you bring your own prisoners into the dungeon with you as orc presents.
>>98576264If an enemy fears an ambush, then by extension they fear the possibility of encountering an obviously superior force, so in this case, they can act accordingly.>>98576280Okay, I guess the group's clerics and lawful characters won't like this, but it's still a legitimate method.
>>98571378I just ran them as regular henchmen, didn't add any special rules. After a few levels it added an interesting tension of how the big damn hero keeps their henchman alive when they're rushing into the fray. Didn't always work out but does lean into the Moonglum style crafty companion out of necessity.
>>98576181No idea, hadn't been paying attention to their personal life or drama. >looks it up Dumb but typical artist blowouts. Bummer. lol you can get it for $700.00
>>98576085>at least in the version I play, the rules state "Monsters will automatically attack and/or pursue any characters they "see," with the exception of those monsters which are intelligent enough to avoid an obviously superior force."What's that in? Not everything should be interested in parley but not everything should be hostile either.
>>98576196>Paper waste in shippingWhat an absolute hellhole. God forbids some young blood try to make something and succeed.
>>98575519>I'm not well versed in OSR Check out a few of the primers. There's a good set in the OP. Its as the other anon said, memes at this point repeated by people who didn't read and haven't played but like how snappy they sound. Its important to note not all fail sates mean game failure. Not all combat is unplanned or at disadvantage. Generally trying to stop the mentality that all encounters are staged combats to be overcome and progress the story was the idea. The rolling aspect is a mutiliated meme, generally that the dice are for uncertain outcomes so smart players will try and limit the amount of times they are in circumstances they have to take chances and that DMs should be able to create and rule on a gameplay world that has meat to it they can follow through on player ideas easily without having to rely on constant skill check rolls and the like. These have been taken to absurdity by retards. There are still various things players and DMs roll, even basic procedural elements like wandering encounter chance.
>>985764153lbb third book, page 12 "avoiding Monsters".
>>98576265Depends on how you run the orcs. If you insist on WAAAAGH! orcs, then yeah, I guess they're functionally just berserkers and will always attack, but Tolkienian orcs are depicted as sniveling and cowardly, full of the cruelty of the weak, so the idea that an orc patrol would prefer not to fight an armed troop of 6-8 men seems entirely reasonable under that interpretation.
>>98576468>If you insist on WAAAAGH! orcsI'm just reading what the monster manual says>Orcs are cruel and hate living things in general, but they particularly hate elves and will always attack them in preference to other creatures. They take slaves for work, food, and entertainment (torture, etc.) but not elves whom they kill immediately
>>98576459try reading the entire section before you ask a question about it
>>98576459I think this is a combination of "it's really early", "the LBBs are... not great... at explaining things and will often just give you the general principle of a thing", and "these are the rules for wandering monsters specifically".If you read that passage holistically you'll realize that it's mostly about offering the brand-new referee (unfamiliar with the type of game entirely!) a simple, unambiguous procedure for resolving random encounter situations which he can cleave to; it's not intended to be prescriptive in the sense of "this is the ONLY thing that happens, in ALL cases, EVEN IF you would prefer to handle it differently".We know that, for example, Gygax did have an elf toll collection troop at one of the entrances to Castle Greyhawk, so it's not like they were insisting on all combat all the time (as further evidenced by "Random Actions by Monsters" further down on page III:12). That said of course if you stumble on a gelatinous cube in the hallways it's not going to stop to barter with you. >>98576433Yes, the EU basically uses the single market/freedom of movement as bait to enable them to fuck shit up across the continent. This is one of their bigger tard moves of the last few years.
>>98576518Sure, but this is like reading a description of the Roman Empire and going "see but it says Romans take slaves for work and entertainment, including as gladiators! That means in every situation any given Roman will try to enslave you!". The passage means to inform you that>orcs are slavers, and they treat their slaves cruelly>however they don't enslave elves because they hate them>*when in a combat situation* orcs will preferentially attack elves for the same reasonMind you, it would be perfectly reasonable to decide that orcs have a particularly negative/hostile reaction to parties containing elves, and again, if you do want to run the orcs as WHFB batle nuts you're free to go right ahead, like I said. The MM description of them hardly requires or even pushes it, though.
>>98576529Obviously, I read the whole section, and the rules are obviously ambiguous. So I prefer my interpretation: unless the enemy is facing an obviously superior force, they tend to always attack, but if for some reason a negotiation happens, then that table kicks in. Is it really that hard to make the two rules coexist?
>>98575519It's basically trying to shock people into actually thinking about "you should be spending more of your time stacking the deck than you spend dealing cards."They rose to prominence because at the time they were being coined people kept hearing that as "put the tanks up front and the healer in the back" and not "your goal should be to set up so many advantages that by the time you do reach for the dice it's already a foregone conclusion. If they've got the drop on you, run."
>>98575413>I love the DIY nature of these games for that reasonThat is my favorite aspect of OSR too. I like how easy they are to homebrew and write material for. Recently, I worked on a guide for converting materials from modern games to OSR (Usually by simplifying or translating the stats to easier to run stuff,) and taking away the railroad nature of adventure modules by converting them to pointcrawls. The other thing I really enjoy about the OSR is how much pre-existing material is out there and how much advice exists for any sort of problem that you might run across. If you have a problem in 5e, you're just going to get a bunch of pencil-dicked tourists on a reddit thread parroting what they saw on Critical Role or some :O faced fagtard on youtube. When you do a websearch of a question related to the OSR, you see the responses are from LITERAL FUCKING CHAD-CHINNED WIZARDS that had to dust off their ancient scrolls to cite ancient wisdom from a magazine article written 40 years ago... And that's cool as fuck.
>''Combat is a fail state''You should only be fighting things if you absolutely know that you are going to win. You should only fight when all other options have been exhausted, or you know that you have a good plan. Know that when you are fighting, death is always one bad roll away. I've had players lose months of progress on their favorite character, due to a fight that quickly turn south.>''you shouldn't be rolling'The plans that you devise outside of combat should be so fool-proof that the referee doesn't even question their success. You're still going to roll dice on many occasions, but it should be because some unforeseen element is involved or because there was no other option.
>>98577184Lol that certainly is a way to put itLet me make it clear tho that i dont avoid DnD for any other reason than i am a stubborn hipster who would rather play a clone of an older version than whatever is new and fancyI do love all the answered questions out there but i also like just fixing things myself As i said i was drawn in by the classes if the gameplay of any DnD stats game doesnt appeal to me i know a game that will and will let me take what i want with itI really dont NEED most things fixed about OSE or BFRPG from my experinces so far and so long as im willing to go nuclear and swap systems every play experince has been smooth when keeping that in mind
I only use BFPRG for their monster manuals and item book. I don't even use the actual values I just use them for ideas.
>>98578075>bfrpgFOE. Kill yourself, Fishfag.
>>98579017We see here the standard reverse fishfag ploy, wherein fishfag pretends that our criticism of BFRPG's flaws means we're also saying it's not OSR. And with this false notion in hand, poorly disguised as one of us, he touts it as part of his "purity spiral" meme.
BFRPG is great. One of the earliest and cheapest retroclones, and it doesn't fuck much up. The adventures are good too. It's not my first choice but you can do worse. The only problem with it is they seem to have made AC go counterintuitvely backwards, with the First Class of armor being the worst. I think that might confuse new players needlessly.
>>98579075Kill yourself, fishfag.
>>98579918Nah, it's pretty bad honestly. It fucks a lot up and there's no real reason to buy it over a POD copy of Moldvay.

In B/X and Old-School Essentials, what rolls use X-in-6 rolls? The only ones I can think of are>2 in 6 chance to open a stuck door, modified by Strength bonus>Dwarves get a 2 in 6 chance to detect construction tricks, detect room traps, hear noises when listening at doors>Elves have a 2 in 6 chance to detect secret doors and to hear noises when listening at doors>Halflings get a 2 in 6 chance to hide in shadows and to hear noises when listening at doors>Thieves get a 2 in 6 chance (increasing with level) to hear noises when listening at doorsWhat else uses the X-in-6 check? Also, I notice that Halflings' ability to hide in shadows is an X-in-6 check, whereas thieves ability to do the same uses percentile dice. Why do you think is? Most importantly, is anything lost by converting all the X-in-6 checks to use percentile dice, or converting all the thief skills to X-in-6?The reason why I'd make such a change is probably weird, but I thought it would be cool if there was no clue a player could get from the sound of the dice the DM rolls behind his screen what he might actually be rolling for.
>>98580229>Also, I notice that Halflings' ability to hide in shadows is an X-in-6 check, whereas thieves ability to do the same uses percentile dice. Why do you think is?Well, for one thing, the Halfling's ability is an innate trait of the race that doesn't go up as you increase in level, and is mostly effective outdoors, with a lesser use in a dungeon. It's basically a port of the ability from Chainmail where they can be effectively invisible, but only in brush or woods.
>>98580190Nah, BFRPG is dog water. The adventures are just B Series: Generic Edish as well, very underwhelming.
>>98580229>What else uses the X-in-6 check?Off the top of my head, unlikely to be exhaustive: other characters have 1/6 to detect secret doors and listen; the wandering monster check is 1/6 although it's not player-facing so maybe you wouldn't count that; surprise is 2/6; foraging and hunting are 1/6 rolls; distracting pursuing monsters with food or treasure is 3/6. Initiative is a 1d6 roll, but not strictly X-in-6.>Also, I notice that Halflings' ability to hide in shadows is an X-in-6 check, whereas thieves ability to do the same uses percentile dice. Why do you think is? As Anon says, it's because the Thief improves in skill. The granularity of percentiles is required to allow a smooth gradual improvement over 14 levels. Many have changed this, though. Look at LotFP for example.
>>98580485>Repeating Youtube and Reddit opinions that don't actually hold up to actual play.As it always happens
>>98576532Very well stated, Anon.>>98580229>player could get from the sound of the dice the DM rolls behind his screen what he might actually be rolling for.For one, always roll dice for your players even if they're searching for something that isn't there. If they want to search for secret doors or traps, roll the dice no matter what. If they're walking past a secret door and you suddenly roll dice, that's obviously a clue. But if you make a habit of just rolling dice sometimes then it's less noticable. You can even give yourself reasons to make rolls, like assigning a 1-in-6 probability for the next door encountered to not be stuck, or for there to be an active light source in the next room. Part of that is superstition, as I think it's bad luck to roll dice for no reason. Also, players aren't always the most tuned in to what's going on at the table. They're unlikely to pick up on every little hint that you may think is obvious.
>>98580732>Ascending AC>Xp from non gold sources>level drain nerfs>storyshittingAbout as OSR as "AD&D" 2e. Kill yourself, fishfag.
>>98580879Ntayrt but I think BFRPG is a commendable, if flawed, endeavor. I appreciate the model of selling books at cost and some of the modules are pretty neat. I wouldn't fault someone for dipping their toes into the hobby with BFRPG before moving onto something else but it also wouldn't be my recommendation for someone looking to get into it as it does get a lot of things wrong. Personallty, I'd recommend B/X, OSE, Labyrinth Lord or FMAG to a complete newcomer before checking out AD&D if it appeals to them.Naturally, regardless of chosen system, I would strongly urge them to read the DMG. It's required reading, after all.
>>98580879>Ascending ACWho even gives a shit? Nobody, outside of memes.>Xp from non gold sourcesOnly a sin depending on what those sources are, which you have failed to specify. OD&D, B/X, and AD&D also give XP from various non-gold sources, too.>level drain nerfsLevel drain is not a pillar of the OSR. Nerfing it is lame, but it's not remotely grounds for excommunication.>storyshittingWhere? In short, I think BFRPG sucks, but I also think you're filled with fake grog bullshit and you smell of the wharf
>>98580879>Cries fishfagI take your concession, gamelet.
>>98575548>>98575827>>98575912>>98576241>>98576443>>98577099Thank you for the answers anons, I do have another question though, when combat DOES happen do you do Theatre of the Mind or use a grid?
>>98581070I only map out a grid if there's complex dungeon terrain, usually. If it's just a hallway or a room I run theater of the mind with the players checking their maps for the entrances/exits from the immediate area if they decide to do something. Most of the time you can just fudge the exact locations and be close, but every so often it matters whether they can form a full line to prevent getting flanked, or if they can use terrain as choke points or whatnot.Anyone remember the time fishfag put on his best fake grog act and tried to tell the thread that B/X was not OSR?
>>98573709Not sure if this list is trolling or cluelessness. I'll assume the latter. It seems that you have put your list together by searching for OSE on DTRPG and then came here to spoon feed you with reviews. There are several problems with this approach. The main one is that 95% of the stuff on DTRP is dogshit, so you're wasting both your own time and outs. A secondary one is, why look for OSE adventures and settings anyway? All OSR systems are interchangeable in this regard, and something being marketed for OSE is not necessarily a good sign. The best ones are often marked for LL or OD&D/S&W.Your bringing up of 5e stuff MUST mean you're fully retarded if you're not trolling.
>>98581014I accept your lack of character sheets, fishnigger.>>98580937>I also think you're filled with fake grog bullshit and you smell of the wharfNice falseflag, fish. >>98574076You should avoid BFRPG because it breaks a few things. See the DM newbie guide in the OP for more info.
>>98575334>Gods of the Forbidden North was trying too hard. Not sure what "trying too hard" is supposed to mean and why it is bad. The problem with that product is that it's a 2e/3e/5e style railroad masquerading as a sandbox, from someone who clearly doesn't understand the difference. Burn it with fire.
>>98575519>''Combat is a fail state'' and ''you shouldn't be rolling''Those are plebbit-tier memes. Don't waste too much mental energy thinking about them, they are partly true, partly misleading, and definitely overstated.
>>98576085>What type of conversation is used for these encounters?DM: "The monsters are surprised, what do you do?"Players: "We offer 20gp for free passage"DM makes a reaction roll, it's positive: "They accept it and say you are free to pass through for the same toll in the future."
>>98579918>BFRPG is great. >it doesn't fuck much up.My, what a raving review! Why settle for retroclones that don't fuck anything up when there's one that doesn't fuck up much?
>>98580229>What else uses the X-in-6 check?Off the top of my gulliver: Getting lost, foraging, hunting, opening doors, listening at doors, searching for non-thieves, triggering traps when stepping over them, wandering monsters, surprise, initiative. I'm sure there's others that don't come to mind right now.
>>98580229>is anything lost by converting all the X-in-6 checks to use percentile dice, or converting all the thief skills to X-in-6?>The reason why I'd make such a change is probably weird, but I thought it would be cool if there was no clue a player could get from the sound of the dice the DM rolls behind his screen what he might actually be rolling for. There's no clue given anyway, so your change is unnecessary. Also DMs make "fake rolls" for various reasons. For instance, if players search for secret doors and there ain't any, the DM makes a fake roll and then says they haven't found anything
>>98581070>when combat DOES happen do you do Theatre of the Mind or use a grid?Yes.
>>98581070I run OSE so I don't bother with exact positioning. My combats are a mess where everybody runs everywhere in the room before or after rolling for attack. So if three players miss their swing on a rat I don't say "tough luck". I say "running for its life the rat strafes left and right to dodge any and every blow. He goes so fast it looks like it's gonna crash into the wall, but at the very last moment it jumps on it and, pushing against its rear legs, manage to jump back on... *DM roll* [Player 1D3] with blood red eyes and its jaw wide open while its forearms scratch the air as if swimming."
Is there any con to reading the fan made BX Omnibus over reading them separately?
>>98581659I think he might never have finished it properly. Or was that the anon working on B&X? Anyway, if it's unfinished that's obviously going to present an issue, but otherwise I don't see why there would be any drawbacks.

>>98581746You missing the point entirely. The exact same considerations apply to your webshop as to DTRPG: 95% of it is crap, and no reason to focus on products branded as OSE. In fact, possibly the other way around.
>>98581746>I want a "world" to tie it all up.So make your own. Appendix B, Wilderness Hexplore, ACKS II JJ, and GFCDND's YouTube channel have all the information you need and then some.
>>98581108Trying too hard to be taken seriously. To the point it was selling me a story when I wanted a world. I did read the description and it went like "Players meet X so go to Y but are ambushed by Z" and that was a big red flag. I still added it on the list anyway because maybe I was reading too much into it or it was easy to dismiss? You guys know better.I've digged into it since my initial post and I think I'll settle with The Dark of Hot Springs Island. Yoon-Sui and Reach of the Roach Gods are both unobtaimium. Khosura is too cost-prohibitive to ship for now and the new edition of City States is still underway. Plus, I can add a boat seller to the Hot Springs Island so I can juggle those keys in front of my players and let them access Isle of Dread once they buy one.
>>98581070I draw a quick map. I don't even worry about grid distance I just put a scale key on it and we measure.
>>98581824ntayrt Haven't run Hotspring Island but did run Lapis Observatory which is part of that and its not very good or at least needs a lot of effort on your part to make engaging. It has a bunch of ideas jammed together but they don't seem to come together as an exploration and adventure. Might persists through the rest of their stuff not sure but wasn't as impressed as I felt like I should have been given the hype and production quality.
>>98581824Forgot to add the Hill Cantons stuff. There's The Slumbering Ursine Dunes, Misty Isles of the Eld, Fever Dreaming Marlinko and What Ho Frog Demons. They're all a bit gonzo but interesting material that has a good mix of utility and meat.
>>98581746>I went to chill in someone's else universe and rekindle my own creativity too.I would check out Melan's zine A Voyae To Fomalhaut. It's just a few bucks and describes the setting where his book Khosura and a lot of his zinematerial are set, with maps.
