TQ: Does your pod play with background music? If so, what's your pod's jam?
>>
>TQ
Yes, and its always awful old rock.
>>
>>98553923

We usually just turn on Spotify and give each other choices on what song to choose

no, the LGS usually has some sci-fi or fantasy movies or early 2000's alt-rock music playing on its TV over the play space, depending on who is working the register. It's all fine unless the autistic kid is working, in which case we're stuck with a Spongebob marathon.

And look, I don't hate Spongebob. I can handle an episode or two. But seven fucking hours of that voice... is too fucking much.
>>
>TQ
It's usually a playlist of video game OSTs.
>>
Asking in thread again for proxy or counterfit card, however you call it, i just want one that looks like real but im a cheap ass nigga
>>

Surprisingly no, which I always found kind of odd because we often do have a lot of connection over music. I'll propose it next time we meet. Would be fun to say winner gets to put on their playlist.
>>

Being a broke cunt isn't a crime, but being a lazy one is. If you're gonna get fake shit and make me have to watch my trades and orders closer you're gonna have to grow some balls and figure it out yourself.

Or you can grow up and use marked playtest proxies.
>>
>>98553923
>TQ: Does your pod play with background music? If so, what's your pod's jam?
Of course not. It's distracting and often most people's taste in music sucks, so everyone else is suffering.

I was pondering something recently and I thought /edhg/ might enjoy arguing about it.

In brackets 3 and below, pretty much any deck with white in its identity would be happy to play a Serra Ascendant on turn 1, even if they weren't into humans or lifegain, right? Assuming they weren't trying to lower their own life total or something, I mean. A 6/6 flyer with lifelink for 1 mana is just that good of a card.
So I was thinking, if there was a "vanilla test" in casual commander, what would the criteria be? Like, assuming no particular synergy with your deck, what kind of rate would a creature need at a given mana curve to make the cut in an average deck? I was thinking about this because I was debating putting Vadmir, the New Blood into my "repeatable crimes" deck on the basis that a 2 mana 6/6 with menace and lifelink is probably worth it in lower brackets even though he doesn't draw or anything...
Me personally I feel like I wouldn't run a 2 mana 10/10 unless it had some combination of vigilance, lifelink, reach or flying. Or if it was in a deck that I could easily give it one of those things.
>>
>>98554077
DO THIS
Bonus points if you advertise it as “not like the other Yshtola decks” but it plays exactly like the other Yshtola decks.
>>
>one Worldfire is out it took top have it be a bracket 4

>>98554112

>>
>>98554112

>>
>>98554091
Serra Ascendant is the litmus test for a french vanilla beatstick and he himself isnt meta defining so that's why every other beatstick creature worth a damn has to have some kind of (ideally multiples of):
>overrun effect
>commander damage/infect
>haste
>evasion like flying and/or trample
>attack trigger
>etb/cast trigger
>can protect itself
>>
Thirty (30) starting life is objectively superior to fourty (40)
>>
>>98554112
Auto assuming that you will grief and worldfire to drag the game down just because you're losing is not excessive at all
>>
>>98554091
>A 6/6 flyer with lifelink for 1 mana is just that good of a card.
It genuinely isn't because it's not about comparing it to every single one drop you could play on turn 1 because this isn't 60 card. It's only good very early game and for many strategies it's a complete dead-draw late game. A card that has modality, cantrips, or synergy beats its competition for a card slot. The problem is a 2 mana 20/20 would still not be good in a Rog-Sai deck even if it had unblockable because on its own it's still going to take 6 turns to win a game. But its very existence would pump the ever loving fuck out of any power-matters strategy and more decks would gradually start leaning into power-matters synergy pieces.
>>
Rog sai is not the defacto "best deck in the world."
It's not even the best deck in cedh. Stop bringing it up retards
>>
>>98554184
Technically current rogsi is nerfed because it lost jewlotus crypt and dockside so imagine if it eventually got those tools back
>inb4 wotc will totally honor what the rc did even after explicitly telling them not to ban said cards

>>

>>
>>98554192
I can't really see them unbanning any of them. A good portion of WHY they didn't want them banned is because they didn't want to deal with the inevitable fallout of pissing off the whales. Unbanning the things would just cause a very similar situation to happen again and it's honestly not worth the trouble. Plus you can't really sell any of them as chase cards if people are legitimately unsure if they'll even be able to USE them come the next ban wave

I'm tempted to make a glass cannon deck, how many doubles/triples would it take to just kill someone with the card lighting bolt. and the obvious question would it be viable in any way?
>>
>>98554350
Furnace of Rath, Fiery Emancipation, and City on fire.
3 X 3 X 3 X 2 = 54 damage.

Now just figure out how to best get the 19 mana you need to cast the 3 enchantments and lighting bolt itself.
>>
>>98554350
I have no idea, but I have a Zo-Zu deck with that card, and a bunch of other static damage effects that punish everyone for playing the game. Offset by some lifegain and asymmetrical punishment. I've tuned it a lot but it still hardly wins, but it is fun to play.

tonight some younger kid (maybe 15?) had a super melty. random pod, mid power. its about t4 or t5 and another player Swords' this kids commander. he folded on the spot and he ran out of the store. looked like he was about to bust out start crying

yeah he was like "not my commander. thats all I have!" and then conceded and put his cards into a pile and before putting all his stuff away got up and ran out the door and came back like 5 minutes later and grabbed his shit without saying anything or looking at anyone.

I'm not sure how his day was going before that but he was sitting alone rearranging a deck when I asked if he's looking for a commander game. I think he had a friend or sibling he was with that was in another game so maybe they whooped his ass all morning.

this was my first game and the dude who killed his commander's first game so no idea but it definitely triggered him. neither of us had anything more than mana dorks or basic creatures out so first commander out will draw some attention.

>>

yeah, I've noticed that too in my games, theft gets usually contrasted more than other, more dangerous mechanics
me and a buddy made a theory that it's because it touches the primal instinct of "Don't touch my stuff!!!" especially if you snatch a player's waifu like Y'Shtola
maybe one day I'll decide to make a Tevesh Szat deck
>>
>>98555918
I fear a deck with 61 lands would not be very good. I'll be generous and say it could run like 10 mana rocks, but it still would probably brick a ton.

You fill out the rest with cards related to Chandra.
And don't forget to include only lands from sets where Chandra is featured.
>>
>>98555945
But the funny part is that every card besides land is named Chandra or Chandra's. It just isn't the same if you have to cheat with art or flavor text. I make a tiny exception for mana rocks, but I'm sure within 5 years we'll be up to 60ish Chandra cards and the dream can be realized with only Chandra('s) and land.

Reality Fracture screws the plan a bit by introducing blue Chandra, so unless both versions merge together in the story into Izzet Chandra who then proceeds to get a card you can play as a commander, you can not confidently claim to have all the Chandras.

Meanwhile I just waant to see chaos unfold, no matter if I am on the receiving end.
>>
>>98554540
I have a playtest deck of this and its so mana hungry trying to pull this off that you might end up swapping a couple cards before 3 people have enough of your shit and beat you out of the game
You'll need an average of *6* mana, with only 2 or 1 c, to redistribute *1* card. Youre honestly better off playing a semi chaos deck with Ian Malcolm as your commander and Share the Spoils type effects for communism.

Need to make a single cut for Summon: Fenrir if anyone has suggestions. I'm also still torn on whether I de-power this deck or just see more games with it as-is. b3 can be hard to gauge, especially when you randomly pod into stupid players. I can't tell whether the deck overperformed because Brenard never ate removal or what.

Aurora Awakener is just such a fucking house though. It shows how disgusting FIRE design has become, that this thing is a bulk rare. I'd play this fucker in every 3c+ green deck for sure. A single sac effect and Brenard out sees six permanents. There are several clones in the deck for it, and copy effects that can be done later. One game it let me win in response to another player's combo.

On the other hand it doesn't necessarily feel dishonest for the deck. Any win it produces is the result of saga creatures piling up. So far the deck's only wins involve Barbara Wright + Bahamut with 70+ mana worth of permanents in play. And even the "oppressive" board states (10 Glen Elendra tokens) have been the result of Good King Mog.

The deck feels like it'd get trounced vs. anyone with the foresight to remove the obvious bant value engine.

It's funny how often the MtG community bitches about UB without realizing they're the minority in an already comparatively small ecosystem. When Mark says "there isn't enough demand for UW product" he was actually right AT THE TIME and the gap only got larger. UB has larger reach in both width and depth because there's a lot of people that buy UB because the IP is more recognizable than MtG, and even excluding that population, there's another population that's indifferent towards UB and is solely looking at cards mechanically (with a further subpopulation that begrudgingly buys UB cards). The amount of people that would actually buy a set that's all UW reprints of UB cards is very small so it would basically have to be a FTV-tier money set for it to sell (at which point the primary marketing wasn't on the fact it was UW, it was the fact it was a set filled with expensive cards, similar to how Aetherdrift's bonus sheet doesn't mean people suddenly like MtG Mario Kart).

MtG's position is uniquely precarious in the modern market because it relies on abnormally high median player spend on top of whale funding. Appealing to a subset of a subset is objectively a stupid decision.

Honestly, I think the mistake was framing it as a question of "would a full set of exclusively Universes Beyond reprinted into Universes Within sell well?". I don't mind Universes Beyond. Fuck, it's why most of my friends even got into this game. But I liked what they did, in theory, with the Walking Dead and Street Fighter cards. Especially the Walking Dead ones for them all being Innistrad themed. Had they kept that up and released renamed and infinitely reprintable in universe versions of the more desired cards over a long period of time spread out in various sets, it would have been easier to balance.
>>
>>98558866
this only applies to commandtards, who all make basedface and shake and cry when they see pop culture slop on new* cards
>>
>>98558883
Yes. My source is I worked at WotC for 6 months as a consultant (fake job where you call everyone idiots all the time). The public-facing version of this is how the entire top 3 bestselling sets of all-time are UB sets (FIN, LTR, TLA) despite full UB sets only starting in 2023. The bestselling in-universe sets are MH3 and CMM and I don't think I need to explain how the primary demographic for those wasn't people that loved Magic's history.

>>98558929
You also going to cope about how Spider-Man made top 10 despite the fact your LGS couldn't sell it because the majority of consumers were Disney adults that didn't play the game even once? Even AssCreed sold more than basically every set 2 and 3 of a block in history.

That is literally the exact type of product that doesn't sell. The dropoff between the UB SLD and the UW SLX was colossal which is why they don't want to do them as dedicated product anymore and instead you're only going to sometimes get them bundled in with a larger set.

>>98558980
That's also the majority of people buying cards for the game as a whole (well actually a large portion doesn't even play the game at all, but Mark tries to soften that by grouping them in with kitchen table players). It's why WotC is looking to eventually phase out Arena (real reason for the worker strike) in favor of a client that runs Commander.

My only complaint with UB is when it's totally out of wack with the rest of the game. UB that's fantasy based like LOTR and FF (sorta) is fine by me, but shit like Marvel and TMNT just feels stupid to me and should be SLD exclusive.

Do you guys see the "new" players who started playing in the last 3 or so years improving and growing? Like are they building more personalized decks, understanding the rules better, and playing better than they were a year ago? I know it's a shit take, but I like Y'Shtola. Yes she's supreme slop, BUT her "do anything draw card" ability means you never get fucked by bad draw. The moment she gets something like curiosity or ophidian eye, she becomes completely bananas.

All the top commanders share the same "this commander prevents RNG from buffucking you" as their central gimmick. You either can cheat in stuff (and not need to be at the mercy of land drops), or you can draw a ton of cards (and negate RNG).
>>

>>98559233
did the other two players, on whose behalf you jumped on that particular grenade by going down a card, have any input to offer?
>>
>>98557155
no and there is no reason to since magic is inspired directly by Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Dungeons and Dragons (core set 2021) is also a 2nd party "universe beyond" set but is not classified as such but like MTG, was also inspired by LOTR.

Final Fantasy is a Japanese take on high fantasy with also influence from Tolkien. So all those sets you'd want to use since they are essential universe within

marvel, Spiderman, tmnt I get though. its just too bad theres really not a way to filter out high fantasy from other sloppa. avatar is also mostly cancerous with all the bending abilities

>>
>>98559237
I'm not saying there's no correlation, I mean obviously the demand wasn't zero, I just don't see how that shows the set sold more packs than any other given set.
Like I'll bet the #1 TCG by sales in May 2013 was mtg, and the #1 sold card was probably Voice of Resurgence, but that doesn't prove that Dragon's Maze was a better seller than any other given set, right?

>>
>>98559168
Honestly, yeah and I think UB will be responsible for it. For new players being brought in by those properties the beginner boxes and Arena are a convenient option where previously there were only commander precons in that space. Not all of them will stick around or move beyond that and plenty will immediately buy a precon without trying other formats much, but it's still more opportunities for new players to develop an understanding of the fundamentals in 60 card before moving to commander.

Q4 2025 (which included Avatar, the #3 set of all-time) still has Soul Stone as the most-traded single in MtG. Of course you're never happy with numbers because you've already made up your mind regardless of facts. Every in-universe set that sells poorly is an outlier. Every UB set that sells well (literally fucking all of them including "bad" ones like TMT) is an outlier.

Mark will never suck your dick bro and they're not going back. They can charge literally twice as much for UB sets and still get more volume off them than the biggest in-universe sets because the reality you're not facing is that MtG players are addicts that will buy regardless and UB IPs are all larger than MtG so they inherently have more draw than the 4th return to Ravnica.

"Do you really think people pull (card) for a reason other than why they would want it" is already a retarded argument, but where's this logic for the Mind Stone?

Concession accepted that you omitted Baylen too, to avoid the point that secondary market value demand an sales being distributed among a set matter more than the sale of any individual card. That should be obvious to anyone with a brain, but the more people that want a set for multiple reasons, the more that set is usually going to sell.

We actually have a metric we can use to guess this in the Estimated Value of a booster box.
https://theexpectedvalue.com/play-ev/blb
You can give the other sets a glance, but let me give the rundown: EoE boxes have more card value than The Hobbit right now, Ninja Turtles did abysmal, SoS isn't doing that great, link related is extremely popular, TLA and FF are doing extremely well. Superheroes is modest, but not as good as even the likes of Dragonstorm.

the number of nobodies watching avengers shit is still astronomically more than the number of nobodies reading mtg lore (which might as well be a negative number)

You've lost the plot so hard that you're no schizoing an entire conversation.
Meds. NOW.

Then we can compare numbers and see if the secondary market demand for even The Hobbit matches EoE.

I'm one of those new fags that got drawn in by final fantasy and I feel like I'm improving in the sense of fucking hell there's a lot of cards and effects to remember but I'm starting to, and I'm gonna try to make a few less combat centric ones, try to make an alt win con deck of some sort soon
>>
>>98557395
