have you ever hit the wall of youre painting abilities and what have you done to better yourself if any
>>98557628I've gotten some good tips from other painters at my FLGS. If you bring your stuff in to show people or - perhaps better yet - paint while you are there, it naturally generates conversation about methods, materials, and technique.Don't be discouraged by the occasional chowderhead offering bad advice. Sometimes, you can come away with some real gems when the right people are in the room.
>>98557628I forced myself to try something new with every other mini.
>>98557628One summer while working a job that prevented me from painting I took up sketching and read some basic art books. Some of the tips in those helped me be a better painter, like making sure to not just trust your minds eye but actually look at an example of what youre painting. Like I stopped painting what I thought leather looked like, and started looking at leather items to know what leather looked like. It also helped with nmm or other non-fantasy materials like fur.
>>98557628It's easy, just paint more at that levelIf you're at a level you're happy at for your needs then it becomes about speed and commitment
>>98557628>have you ever hit the wall of youre painting abilitiesDid you really hit it to ask such a question? Or you are just lazy to step out of your workflow.
Anyone here paints cars for Gaslands? I want to get into the game, but I don't know how to treat the old toy cars. Should I completely prime the cars directly or should I take the plastic layer from the metallic part? And if so, how? Considering they are cheap toy cars, I'm not sure if the typical nail polish remover is going to be too strong or not strong enough.
>>98557815i have painted a couple old metal cars, dissasembled, cleaned with soap and water and primed, i didn't bother removing the original paint
>>98557815ideally you want to media blast them but if you can't do that I guess the best you can do is to scuff them with sandpaper or scotchbrite.
For white scar primer do I need a full white coverage or is some very slight transparency on the plastic grey in some areas ok?Don't want to fuck up and clog up details. And do I really need to wait 24 hours before painting?
>>98559278you dont actually need to color the whole model but you can use it to even some roughness of imperfectionsi bring them in straight away and wait maybe 15 minutes sometimes even 30 before paintingtry it out and you will figure it out its not like you will ruin them models
There's still no one that has beat black metal from scale75. Amazing
>>98559416It's looking like this right now, where it looks almost like a zenithal in some areas but it's just the white primer being thin.I was planning on using a fair bit of contrast paints to start with as a base for the strong pigments and saturation so not sure if any of this will show up but also don't want to put another coat unless it's necessary.
>>98559937that is pretty much as full coverage of primer as one could ever want so good job anon> not sure if any of this will show upno it wont you need pretty strong contrast for the slapchop i think its called to shine trough so dont worry about it and just give it your best shot
>>98560051Great, thanks anon.
Farsight still need to get varnish all over but aside from this, both he and his base is finished. Maybe shouldn't try to place grass here but whatever.
>>98559937it looks grainy strip it and try again
>bigboss made it into the college :DHere a breaka boyz WIP for you.
>>98560151she looks great but it gives me chills how many thin parts there are just waiting for the accident to happen when they snag on to something and snap off
>>98560337Well, he is display piece anyway, I don't play Warhammer, just wanted to paint this dude since I found his design pretty cool.
Working on some Tzaangors
Looking for tips on tips to take this a step further>>98560151 very nice!
>>98560151Came out pretty crisp, anon!
>>98560151whoever designed the mold for the backpack should be publicly executed
>>98560424All Tau jets/backpacks are retarded like this. Contrary to popular redditor belief, GW models are not some great golden standard, but are often quite fucking lazy.
Second dude done. I think he turned out a bit messier than the first one but oh well.
>>98560451>>98560414I wish all IG would go a bit more tactical like these dudes.
>>98560414man those pants are really well done, mine look like ass cause its just flat olive green
As a new painter, what method should I be focusing on for getting decent blends?>Glazing>Wet Blending>Layering with small value jumps
>>98560562#3 worked best for me
>>98560562as a new painter your main problem is the choice and how you have to ask what of these things should you trythey all will most likely look the same at the beginning and you have a rough idea what you are looking for so just follow where it leads you
>>98560423>>98560414I was also quite content that damage done by accidental cement bath on his right jet is not that much visible, at least less so than I feared. Already started to think about how to additonally paint it as "partially melted" but in the end just treated it normally.>>98560424It had questionable ideas overall. Like how those arms are expected to be locked in single pose but barely fits inside those "sockets" and have tiny connections maching small holes on said sockets - but I couldn't even fit them here. Farsight design is really cool but execution - not so much.
>>98560613well which one has the lowest floor I guess?
>>98560650layering with small value jumps probably, glazing and wet blending require a lot more know-how with water/medium ratio control and other stuff, with layering you can just make a raised area brighter and brighter bit by bit
>>98560562layering will be easiest with most gaming acrylics that dry almost instantly, while wet blending is easy if you use drying retarder, paints that dry more slowly, or live in a very humid place
Been doing some test models for my Marines, basically got the scheme down but torn on whether to go with the more vibrant red (left) or a slightly more muted red (right). The dude on the left isn't finished whilst the guy on the right is, so bear that in mind; main difference is whether I highlight the red by mixing in some Golden bold pyrrole red or just off-whites.
>>98560726looking at that right marine you might have the rare natural affinity for painting orks so that is something to keep in mind
>>98560799I do have some orks on the pile of shame, so noted. I was aiming for a Rogue Trader "psycho space bastard" vibe but I may have gone a little far. Then again that's what test models are for.
>>98560812tbqh the marine doesnt look very good because i have no idea are you going for red or orange or somethin inbetween and can you replicate that for some 200 times to get full army sometimes in the futurethe ork thing on the other hand you have already nailed down
fucked up the clear canopy and im thinking about trying to recast the bits in UV resin.anyone got any ideas or helpful tips?
>>98560451he looks a little snowy I think you messed up your clear coat application.
>>98560943make it black to give it some nice contrast
>>98559513Nta but what makes that s75 black metal paint so good?I’ve got turbo dork black ice but never used scape 75.I’ve had my eyes on the ammo cobra color metallics like their grau ones that mimic black metal or dark metal. But they don’t seem to be sold in Canada so I might have to order from Spain and get my wallet messed up by international shipping.
>>98560647It's such an horrible kit, I've been planning to strip and repaint it that way for months now but I've been too lazy to do so
>>98560968i tried this already after fucking up the clear plastic and i didnt really like it all that much, it is my fallback plan if i cant get a mold to work tho.
Started working on this Skink
>>98561010by all means its always good to learn new thingsbut i mean just get an even black coat and then varnish it shiny you rarely look at these minis without any lights on so it will catch the eye and look badass no matter what angle you are looking at it
>>98561046but you guys said that models will look like toys if you don't paint highlights on them because they're too small to reflect light
>>98561039he looks like hes rly fast
>>98561039are you the same anon who was showing off their starpriest? keep up the great work, very vibrant bluessuper shitty pic but the basecoating for my last batch of clanrats are about done, i suck at doing fur so they do look like oldschool monkey rats at the moment
>>98561080people say all kinds of shit and there is a strong clash in stylistic choices between the more artistic and stylized choices with increased color contrast and exaggerated highlights, and the scale modeling style of realistic color and finishes. Gloss finishes tend to look really bad on camera but better in-person usually.
>>98560943Do each panel individually, it'll be easier to get them even and bubble-less
>>98561080think of it this way the clear cockpit was also a shiny reflecting surface but now you dont have to paint the insides and it will look just as cool
>>98561039what kit is this from seraphon bro?
>>98561106Yeah that's me, thank you anon>>98561188Terradon/Ripperdactyl Riders
>>98557628I literally tricked my brain to treat new painting techniques like learning new magic. Its fun, exciting when it works out, and has a goal. I see a cool glow effect or surface details and immedietly try to reconstruct it. It dosnt make me BETTER, but it keeps me in and thats all I need to enjoy my own work.
