>What is Lancer?
Lancer is a TTRPG about narratives, customizable mechs, and the pilots who crew them.

Set thousands of years in the future, Lancer imagines a future where humanity has spread to the stars after weathering terrible ecological collapse on Earth.

Players of Lancer adopt the roles of mech pilots. Some groups will fight for Union, working to rectify the crimes of previous administrations. Others, for a corpro-state, working to advance private interests while lining their pockets.

Lancer offers deep mech customization, a wide range of player backgrounds, and a system and setting with room for any story you and your group want to tell.

>Lancer News:
TOM & MIGUEL are back together now that Miguel has been released from WotC contract.

Lancer campaign 'No Room for a Wallflower Part 2' is currently in development

I'm still mildly annoyed that the Orchis license doesn't come with a good melee weapon in it
>>
>>98558794
To be fair by most metrics Lancer doesn't come with a good melee weapon in it
>>
Why do all of the most based people stick with the Everest?
>>
>>98559433
Because 1 repair per structure is actually the best frame trait in any campaign where you have more than 4 sit reps per mission. Fancy toys be damn, unless you are playing a frame that doesn't get hit at all, Everest will outperform over time.
>>
How high would you rank Ra or whatever his name is in a mecha power level scale? Can your favs defeat him?
>>
>>98559492
Mechs are just efficient warmachines in lancer, they aren't all that setting defining... really.

Ra is a Dominion, a hallucination of a superpowerful AI system that gained sapience and exists outside of regular casuality and founder of an extra dimensional realm called blink space (Which is one of the settings only way to accheive FTL travel).

He is Paracausal by nature. I can not think of an effective way to kill him in anyway that is meaningful unless you are also a similar Dominion.

There might be a way to do it because he seems still reliant of humanity to continue to exist in some way... which isn't clear could he depends on future events to maintain his dominion so he doesn't do things that would violate the conditions of his birth some time in the future.
>>
>>98559488
you could always go with an efficient core power mech with uni-comp to make up for lower repairs
>>
>>98559608
If you have a dedicated support mech or Grease monkey you can minimalize the difference but it steal eats a significant amount of resources and reserves to make up the difference.

You either have a lancaster with all the tools to keep people tuned up or you don't and you're gonna struggle more... Or you go SSC and just always have the action economy and upgrades to constantly hide or mobility to skirmish and get out of danger quick enough that you never take damage anyway.
>>
>>98559685
the Orchis is honestly very good if you're looking for a mech that needs to rarely spend repairs

Immune to reliable, armor to blunt some attacks that actually hit it, efficient core power to combo with uni-comp and has enough evasion you can actually justify evasion-stacking on it, especially given it's a black witch license so you can just if need be plant your arse near an ICEOUT drone to account for not investing into E-def
>>
>>98558703
What do guys even do for out of mecha moments/combat? I can't even call it barebones because there aren't even any bones in there.
>>
>>98559825
Sadly the campaign that was trying it died before we really got into it but we were using a rules-light cyberpunk game called The Sprawl to handle pilot stuff. Was simple enough to not get in the way but had more teeth than just theater-of-the-mind and some clocks.
>>
Asking again in case anyone has the Prototype Pattern Groups and the Rebaked NPCs lcps stuff
>>
>>98559825
its quite barebones, but im lucky to have two "free rp" lovers in my party, so there's plenty of stuff happening outside of mechs, even have full "just narrative" sessions, usually revolving around these assholes getting in trouble.
For example, in the current mission the players were hired by a triad sort of guy to protect a gladiator mechpilot while he fought in a tournament (and be part of his squad too). Besides the tourney stuff the party has currently

>Infiltrated said triad's warehouse complex at the spaceport, impersonated a high ranking officer of said triad and got a few intel on their drug and weapon trafficking operations, all of this because they plan on betraying their employers since they sort of stronghanded them into this job
>lost a bunch of money betting on boxxing, before setting up a mech sized match, with the engineer character calling in a few favor with the party's ships crew to help him design and build mech sized knuckle dusters (a sidegraded charged blade i made by modding an lcp for an exotic weapon) and armed the spindly mourning cloak with it for said underground match
>survived an assassination attempt
>spend a whole lot of money on gambling in general
>>
Posting my idea for dice pool rework of the trigger system. It's barebones, but still better imo than what the core book gives you

You're not supposed to have that many sitreps per mission
>>
>>98560863
Its 5-7 recommended broseph.

>>98561112
You're right. I couldn't find anything about mission length, I found that the book recommends 3 to 4 compats per FULL REPAIR, not mission, which is why I am wrong. Although if your GM is giving you 5 to 7 sitreps between full repairs I think you might be getting bullied by your GM there, anon.
>>
>>98561193
im curious tho, since full repairs just reset the repair cap, how are you supposed to avoid a classic d&d situation of "players just long rest constantly" 10 hours is quite a small timeframe that most parties will be able to find some place to do it?
>>
>>98561263
Lancer sitreps happen at a larger scale, and you need access to a facility or a 3d printer for a full repair. Its not something you get by sitting with your mech for 10 hours. If your GM is putting 7 sitreps between you and a full repair that's a narrative problem.

interesting, im gonna show this to my players and see what they think of it.

>>

R20 is such an unoptimized piece of garbage Foundry is unironically going to run better player side
>>
>>98558703
Tourist here. I keep hearing that Lancer is DnD 4e's spiritual successor. Why is this? Isn't it a mecha game?
>>
>>98561947
It has the same design philosophy of heavy keyword usage that's standardized across classes, most player actions being formalized class-specific abilities with set usage parameters/cooldowns, and intense mechanical focus on a particular flavor of combat with very little supporting scaffolding for non-combat interactions. If you are not in a mech having a skirmish with another mech, Lancer does not give a single solitary fuck about you.
>>
>>98561947
I never played 4e but it sounds similar from what I know of it. If you want to think of lancer as "4e but with mechs" you can.
>>
>>98561947
Having run 4e extensively, there is a degree of overlap. Lots of discrete abilities, keywords, and semi-categorized roles. You've got a pool of repairs to use to fix up your machine between fights, and non-combat aspects don't have a lot of mechanical support.
From the DM side, you've also got aspects like having 1 HP versions of enemies to serve as minions/grunts, as well as elites/ultras that serve as upgraded versions. Building a combat encounter is a relatively similar process.

Lancer doesn't quite cleave to some things as closely, but it shares a surprising amount of the basic DNA.
>>
>>98562141
It's also only playable because of the online rules engine/character builder, but in Lancer's case it actually exists rather than the dev committing a murder-suicide.
>>
>>98561947
4e is known for having more gamified mechanics than the rest of D&D.
These kinds of systems are usually called "video gamey" systems because there's way more emphasis on streamlined action and balance than on diagetic roleplay. Most video gamey TTRPGs compared to it, as 4e is archetypal for that kind of system.
I think saying Lancer is 4e-inspired does 4e a disservice, because Lancer sacrifices the same things 4e did while failing to succeed at the goals 4e accomplished. Still, they're the same basic kind of game.
My main problem with Lancer in general is its total lack of rational, big picture reasoning. For example, 4e had video gamey systems for a reason: To accomplish gameplay balance. Lancer doesn't really care about balance at all, but has video gamey mechanics to... have video gamey mechanics. It's not balanced well, it doesn't support the roleplay/fantasy well, doesn't support the setting well, hell, the setting seems actively hostile to mechs, as they're rarely even mentioned in the core book's exposition about the universe and premise.
>>
>>98563044
Because the mechs are supposed to be super duper freeform whatever you want but also at the same time being very rigid designs sold/licensed out as a packaged deal.
Like the Lancaster is supooed to simultaneously look like a gundam if you want while also being a mule bot.
They can't really do much with the mechs or lancers themselves because that would either put facts to paper which goes against the player decided narrative or go full freeform which doesn't work with mechs all being corpo products.
Fundamentally broken.
>>
>>98563058
Fundamentally there's no technology in this setting. Like none whatsoever, everything is paracausal magic.
>>
>>98561861
If you wish to try my dice system, I also made (meaning Claude made), a tiny foundry module implementing it seamlessly into the system

If you're playing offense (rather than support, defense, or tech-builds), it is LITERALLY the best frame in the game. Initiative is a 10/10 ability. Replaceable Parts is an 11/10 ability, and it's Core Power is a 9/10 ability. It's got high mobility, is surprisingly durable because taking structure damage is barely a concern, and has the weapon mounts to run anything. There genuinely isn't a better Striker frame in the entire game unless you're building around a high-heat weapon like the Plasma-Thrower.
>>
>>98563934
I could argue the Gilgamesh is better if you're using at least one limited system
And course like you said for high heat scenarios there's the Genghis (Worldkiller) or Tokugawa depending on if your approach to heat is careful management or YOLO

Monarch if you're using launchers definitely up there with Everest as well

the melee strikers just suffer a lot from melee striking not being as good as ranged

I'll always go to bat for New Wild West. I haven't run across anything wildly unbalanced in it, and it fills a flavor niche I think is lacked in the core book for people building their own mechs from spare parts.

One of my players has been using Field Guide to Liminal Space as well. The mechs in there seem complicated, but so far not in any way that breaks things down.

As the DM, I also just pull all the third party I can for more NPC ideas.
>>
>>98564159
NPC Rebake has grown to be one of my favourites. I especially like how it aims to remove unnecessary bookkeeping for the gm (for example Priest shield is changed from "next 1d3 attacks get resistance" to just granting overshield to an ally). And if you don't like how a particular NPC class or template is handled, you can still just play the regular version.

What do you think about a campaign inspired by Deserts of Kharak, where the players are the main mech squadron on board a land carrier going on an expedition through a hostile desert?
I think it could work well with Blood Money base mechanics.

Do you have any ideas for cool missions/threats in such a set up? The biggest issue with DoK campaign was that you were fighting the same enemies for majority of the story, so more kinds of enemy factions would be important.

based beyond belief anon, that shit is right up my alley, id play the shit out of it.
As for missions really, you could start with a similar attack in the game at the departing base, and create problems to prompt the players to go out and fix them, it would be fun if the expedition starts to become more and more fractured as you go with different people having different ideas on how to handle things with the players having to herd them and keep them in line, you could use the blood money job structure to rapresent it.

As for premise and enemies you can do whatever anon, right on top of my head im thinking that the planet you play is some sort of isolated hellhole where a fleet of SecComm refugees escaped and then set up a bunch of countermeasures to not get genocided by thirdcom (something like an uber version of a sub-blink snare that crashes all ships traveling nearby like the core does in DOK) and you people just forgot your history.
enemies can be anything, asides from space al-qaeda you can have dangerous wildlife, desert clans you can befriend or fight, maybe there is a seccomm era NHP array set up with protecting the world, but cascaded and its now hellbent on not letting you leave the planet, so youd be fighting plenty of remote controlled vehicles etc.

Newfag to lancer here, I'm assuming initiative is so good mostly to barrage and double skirmish turn one (or the first turn in range) each scene?

I was thinking also about Battlestar Galactica. I'd especially love to try something like the Pegasus arc.
>>
Current party consists of:
>Emperor
>Blackbeard
>Deathhead
>Metalmark

I'm currently undecided on what to pick for myself. I considered Saladin since we don't have a tank but the piddly damage it does, doesn't feel good as a player and a lot of the other tanks are so slow that it feels like everyone else will have cleaned up by the time I get into position to actually tank.
>>
>>98566426
see
>>98558703
Orchis is peak fast tank

Also any mech can be fast if you put Sunzi stuff on it
And control-heavy tanks can be fun even if they do 0 damage

You could also always go with a Lycan, beckoner means it's surprisingly fast even in tank mode and you can dynamically switch from tank mode to damage mode

And staying in Horus, the Gorgon is a good defender that's fairly fast and deals a good amount of damage with Vorpal Gun
>>
>>98566426
Saladin is a legit great option for that squad because you'll have a lot of agility that can work with Noah very well and emperor can slap shahnameh on you and not ever worry about overheating

orchis is also good for everyone to be mobile, but also consider the humble house guarded lancaster with its fat repair cap it can share for your 2 repair frens when they will eventually get structured
>>
>>98565028
I know that Kai Tave is a piece of shit, but NPC rebakes do have changes that are well explained, even if the baseline of lots of NPCs difficulty is increased.
>>
>>98566487
>>98566913
I guess as someone who plays a lot of support classes in other games and thus a lot of turns are spent just moving and doing 1 thing while everyone else gets multiple attacks and bonus actions and do the big damage, I want to avoid that from happening yet again.
>>
>>98567087
support in Lancer is quite the opposite, if built right a support mech can be the one that does a million things with actions and reactions while the damage dealing can be the thing that feels boring because it's just damage

Remember most support actions are a Quick action, of which you get 2 per turn, and a lot of other support options are reactions, interesting reactions at that

I have played mechs before that flat out didn't attack or do anything hostile what so ever on their turn and still ended up playing a very interesting character
>>
>>98567087
this >>98567287 for sure, take a look at orator, field analyst, and sysop talents just to start. the supplement books added in a ton of great options for support builds
>>
>>98567385
and even if you're not willing to go all in, the house guard talent line lets you take an offensive action whenever you protect someone

Spotter is also really neat in that you can use a quick action of yours to let someone else make an attack, which can be highly tactical
>>
>>98567056

Wait why is Kai Tave a piece of shit?

My DM has decided to allow Duelist to work with my Tempest Charged Blade despite being directly against the rules. He might not have decided this if I was running something with more than 3 Speed, and if somehow it is gamebreakingly overpowered, he'll rescind it.
>>
>>98567697
superheavy melee generally is one of the least optimal ways to play, and generally getting executioner is just flat out required to make it doable, so I doubt you're going to do anything silly with it

Wanna try and build a guren-like mech for a test campaign I'm going to run/play in.
The Empakaai seems obvious because of BIG HAND to the point it seems outright inspired by it, but it seems so slow that I'm wondering what other license combinations could deliver that same feel.
Could anyone help plan out a LL6 Build?
>>
>>98568077

that all seems more like a problem with pnet than it does Kai Tave, but fair enough.
>>
>>98568332
he actively participates in making pnet worse
also he literally does not play Lancer. No one who actually plays lancer would think or write like he does, he's a white room faggot and even then I think that accusation is flimsy because even white room faggots wouldn't think like he does
>>
>>98567056
everything the rebake rebalances about NPCs PROPERLY (not the horrifically unbalanced buffs he gives the NPCs) is shit people already know about if they have experience with the system and shit that no one should be paying this fucking ten dollars for to have
baseline we need to just tell new GMs:
>enemies with more attacks at higher tiers are bullshit
>some combinations of template features + NPC features are inherently evil
>some NPC synergies are retardedly evil (bombard + specter)
>don't use lots of invisible NPCs or have any multi-structure enemy use invis if your players have no way to counter it (lotus drone, lots of reliable damage, etc.)
rebake inherently also just doesn't really touch on how some template features when paired with other specific things are ludicrously strong
There are things you learn naturally running lancer that you just shouldn't do. Or you should only do if your players are veterans or very good at the system
>>
>>98568430
>no one should be paying this fucking ten dollars for to have
baseline we need to just tell new GMs:
Considering where we are, I assumed no one was paying for anything here regardless.
>>enemies with more attacks at higher tiers are bullshit

>>some NPC synergies are retardedly evil (bombard + specter)
>>don't use lots of invisible NPCs or have any multi-structure enemy use invis if your players have no way to counter it (lotus drone, lots of reliable damage, etc.)
Why not rather than tell people to avoid these issues, change it so it can be used in the first place?
>rebake inherently also just doesn't really touch on how some template features when paired with other specific things are ludicrously strong
Examples?
>>
>>98568451
>examples
off the top of my head, volley module with sniper
either only one player can get to go to drop prone/get into cover or the ultra can wait to take two turns in a row at the end of initiative
>Considering where we are, I assumed no one was paying for anything here regardless.
yeah well outside of here where people are more opposed to that. There is no reason to give Kai ten dollars for that
>Why not rather than tell people to avoid these issues, change it so it can be used in the first place?
I mean that's literally what I am talking about but not paywalled behind a mediocre book
There are more things wrong with the rebake than just that. Most of the NPCs are actually overall buffed and much stronger, bespoke grunts are at least novel
But he also fundamentally misses on NPC identity as evidenced by his blurbs explaining each NPC rebake
>you see ronin had no identity outside of sword guy
you dumb nigger sword guy is an identity
>>
>Mourning cloaks can just instantly remove themselves from a battle by accident with a bad roll
Based shenanigans rules but also why the fuck are they the only thing in entire game with a failure penalty that harsh
>>
>>98568535
this game was written by an artist
in early playtests the atlas had less than 4 structure
>>
>>98568535
Because its funny for one turn and then the player has to sulk for the next hour as the rest of the group plays lancer.
>>
>>98568430
What would you call an unbalanced buff? I've been using rebaked NPCs for a while now and only had positive experiences with them all.
>>
>>98568654
overall most NPCs are just stronger than their base versions
bullshit like multiple attacks has been cut, but the features added or reworked are a little too strong
Lancer is already a game where NPCs overall tend to outscale or be stronger than players
>>
>>98568472
Were I DMing a Sniper with a volley module, that actually sounds like an interesting puzzle to set up the players for a turn. Go first turn with the sniper, set up the volley, go last turn with the sniper and fire it off. Give everyone a chance to choose to mitigate it or not.
>>
>>98568664
I'd say most NPCs are more focused on a singular task than their base versions, but none of them have seemed really stronger. The operator can no longer just choose to murder someone from all the way across the map with three shots, so I call that a win.
>>
>>98568666
yes, that's how you're meant to do it is to give players a chance to deal with it
as it is written if you play it optimally, you don't give players a chance
>well don't play it super optimally
for an experienced DM, generally yes this happens, but things like this NEED to be written in a way to prevent people from abusing it, either accidentally because they didn't know any better, or purposefully with a "teehee well the game let me do it and it's legal so get fucked"
A simple fix for this would be to change volley module from "players can drop prone to avoid it as a free action on their turn" to "Players can either drop prone as a free action on their turn, or as a reaction"
OR, alternatively, it's treated like some of the orbital laser features, in that the volley goes off at the end of the next round
>>
>>98568673
agree to disagree I guess
it's just personally I have already done tweaks to NPCs in my games to make them less bullshit and I don't want to put kai tave slop anywhere near my game
>>
>>98568225
You can mitigate the low speed with Pankrati talent level 2 from KTB field guide. Gives you a 1/scene burst of speed so long as you end the move next to an enemy, which is where a striker like Empakaai wants to be anyway.

Since the Empakaai's integrated superheavy self-inflicts heat, Nuclear Cavalier and Tokugawa systems would be a good way to further lean into the Guren's gimmick.

Basic build for idiots:

-- IPS-N Empakaai @ LL6 --
[ LICENSES ]
IPS-N Blackbeard 3, HA Tokugawa 3
[ CORE BONUSES ]
Gyges Frame, Heatfall Coolant System
[ TALENTS ]
Executioner 3, Pankrati 3, Nuclear Cavalier 3
[ STATS ]
HULL:2 AGI:0 SYS:2 ENGI:4
STRUCTURE:4 HP:17 ARMOR:2
STRESS:4 HEATCAP:10 REPAIR:5
TECH ATK:0 LIMITED:+2
SPD:4 EVA:7 EDEF:8 SENSE:5 SAVE:13
[ WEAPONS ]
Integrated: Colossus Termo-Unguis
Integrated: Fuel Rod Gun
Heavy Mount: Nanocarbon Sword
Flex Mount: Bristlecrown Flechette Launcher / Bristlecrown Flechette Launcher
[ SYSTEMS ]
Synthetic Muscle Netting, Deep Well Heat Sink, LUCIFER-Class NHP x4

Other options:
The third level of Blackbeard is just for an IPSN core bonus, because Gyges Frame gives you bonuses to both melee weapon threat range and an accuracy bonus on grappling checks. You could comfortably swap it for any other IPSN level, probably Caliban or Zheng.

You could swap out those two points in Systems for Hull or Engi if you're willing to swap the Lucifer for Plasma Gauntlet and almost assuredly overheat when you use it.

Brawler is another good talent for you if you're willing to cut a few levels in the others, but don't steal from NC because you want that fuel rod gun.

So, one of my players wants to run a Tallgeese. How the hell do I build a fast flying duelist with a big fuckoff cannon?
>>
I found a mega link to lancer mk2 in the previous thread. Is it the latest version or is someone still working on it?
>>
>>98569035
For the Tallgeese, honestly an Everest as baseline would fit really well given that it's the prototype for the common mechs in the series

For flying there's the SSC core bonus All Theater Movement Suite

For the cannon itself, what comes closest would probably be the Andromeda from the Sherman license, though you do run the risk of cooking yourself alive by overusing it, and course need 5 license levels to access it and flying

From SSC itself, sadly the railgun which could have been a decent stand-in is ordnance, which might feel a bit weird since the Tallgeese is meant to be a very mobile mech

Generic weapons, the Heavy Machinegun obviously needs serious reflavoring to work
Hurricane Cluster Projector might do the trick, big fuck you cannon, but it's always a bit sad to use a superheavy on an Everest since you can't take advantage of it's initiative trait with it
Thermal Lance also has the "cook yourself" issue on top of being not that good

Honestly though overall, if you reflavor the Heavy Machinegun into being a single shot cannon, it would with enough SSC license to get flying, get a decent approximation
Heavy Machinegun Everest is a very much bog standard loadout which works in favor of the Tallgeese
>>
>>98569436
oh and if you're willing to use 3pp (though this particular 3pp is used by like half the players) a flying Oleander (death's head alternative) from Enhanced Combat with a railgun could also work pretty darn well for the flying duelist with a big fuckoff cannon since the Oleander's traits solve the 2 main issues with the railgun, ordnance and it's heat generation
>>
>>98569436
>and course need 5 license levels to access it and flying
There's always the GMS flight unit that eats your system points instead of your core bonus slot.
>>
>>98569733
oh right I completely forgot about that one somehow, my bad
bit heavier on the heat management, oppressively so if you're gonna double up with an Andromeda, but also lets you OP caliber or heatfall instead of core power flying

While the players dont know that yet since it has yet to happen, depending on where they are in the fight im probably either make him roll to reappear, or better yet, make him survive a horde of eldritch abominations in a parallel fight until the encounter ends and he can reappear in realspace.

What's the closest equivalent of a paladin?

I would like to be a melee mecha with healing AoE
>>
>>98571614
Orchis maybe? It doesnt have an AOE heal though. I actually don't know if any mechs have healing abilities.
>>
>>98571739
Lancaster does but it's honestly a shitshow of an ability because they decided a healing ability should be capable of missing
>>
>>98558703
I just came in here to say the artist is fundamentally incapable of selling the mechs as being mechs and the whole game would make infinitely more sense aesthetically if it marketed itself as Warframe: The TTRPG.

you can still miss with that one though, you can only voluntarily fail to evade a tech attack
meaning that if your allies have high evasion this actively is worse

Yeah but you have to be conscious and it takes a standard action, plus it leaves you vulnerable to all spells while it's down.

im trying to build an encounter for my players next arena fight, here's the idea so far:
>fight has rpg adventure theme, with my players playing the bad guys and opfor playing as a party of heroes
>the arena is a few small pillars surrounding a larger one which is a king of the hill control zone
>the smaller pillars are either 1 space taller or shorter than the main one so to cut line of short ones only get LOS on the border of the main pillar
>main pillar is 5 spaces tall with spikes at the bottom falling prompts a hull save, fail deals 5 damage, while passing halves the damage
>first wave its the cleric and the bloodhunter a vanilla Priest type and a nosferatu from enhanced combat (basically a cqc mech that absorbs heat and when becomes exposed can do a p nasty attack) all with a small group of 3/4 1hp hornet (with rpv template) mechs with hex missiles
>turn after turn 4 the leader of the group comes in the "paladin" which is a modified elite crusader from castor and pollux, flavor wise its a sword wielding barbarossa
Pic related its the dude's character sheet, is this too much for a ll2 party of 3/4? (most likely 3)
>>
>>98572691
I think you are incorrect. Mk2 version says "on attack", meaning the effect activates regardless on whether you hit or not. In this version you don't have to roll to hit at all unless you want to activate some talents like Centimane.

Which first party frames/weapons/systems need buffs or nerfs the most?
>>
>>98565604
Depends on the sitrep. Sometimes just being able to boost for free to get close to an objective is enough.

My absolute favorite thing though is to combine it with Redundant Repairs from the Sherman 2 license. This pretty much gives you a free Stabilize every encounter until you run out of Redudant Repairs (the Grease Monkey talent can keep these topped off between encounters though).

The Napoleon. It is literally a worse Saladin every single respect and it's unique weapon is actually unusable garbage. 10 heat AND it's a loading weapon? To do just 10 damage? What the fuck was Harrison smoking? A tank mech that's only Size 1/2 and doesn't have the Guardian trait? Were they fucking retarded?
>>
>>98575281
Heavy Machine Gun needs a nerf, it's the second best weapon on the game (after the Gandiva, because holy fuck) and doesn't require any licenses in your build to use.

Tech needs a buff. Basically all tech that's not Puppet Systems or Eject Power Cores. It's really lame to play a hacker and basically peak after you grab ONE level in Goblin.
Tech also just does not scale into the late game nearly as well as other builds. I'd argue Tech gets WORSE as you level up because it requires an investment in your Systems Stat, which is a dump-stat for almost every other frame/build in the game.
>>
>>98559433
Because anything less is unacceptable, and anything more is decadence.
>>
>>98575940
How would you buff it? Change Displacer into a more reasonable 6 heat?
Maybe an ability that mimics the Guardian in some way? Free action that gives an ally within sensors hard cover until the end of your next turn. Using it costs 2 heat and the effect ends if the ally leaves your sensors. Can be used once per turn.

>>98575944
What do you think would be more reasonable? 1d6+6?

>>98575971
That's tricky. I think it would be better to selectively buff different invade options rather than make a top down change to hacking. Iirc NPC Rebake lowers enemy edef across the board though to make it less needed to pump Systems.
>>
>>98575940
>and it's unique weapon is actually unusable garbage. 10 heat AND it's a loading weapon
Hey fuck you to buddy, my Tokugawa loves that thing, don't take away my 10 heat generator for maximum over-Lucifer

that said Napoleon is bad, Kutuzov might as well be the main mech in that license and it genuinely is a good mech, only buff I would give it is 10 sensor instead of 5 sensor so you can better use shield systems
>>
>>98576106
Yeah after I typed >>98576033 I realised that free action guardian is really just a less interesting Kutuzov passive.

I'm really torn on the Displacer. On one hand it's impractical, on the other it's pretty iconic and really fun in niche builds.
>>
Where do you guys coordinate these threads? It's unbelievably fake and gay.
>>
>>98576147
God forbid people be civil on 4chan.
>>
>>98576120
honestly with the displacer, I'd put it in a different license than the Napoleon and put it at like LL2 to make it a bit more accessible and do more memes with it

alternatively if you need to buff displacer, give it a heaping bunch of Reliable so that it combos well with phase-ready mod
>>
>>98576147
I like you better when all you did was complain about people not liking D&D.
>>
>>98575940
The Napoleon feels like one of those thongs where the game designer had a very specific idea in mind (small extremely durable suit of mechanized power-armor with energy shields) and then just... utterly failed at the execution of that idea in every possible way.
>>
>>98576186
the Napoleon is very durable and it succeeds in that, the flaw with the Napoleon isn't that it isn't durable, it's that it provides zero incentives for enemies to actually attack it instead of ignoring it's existence
that's what the Kutuzov solves, a GM can't just ignore a Kutuzov, if they do, said Kutz is just going to start pushing around enemies, buff allies and clear their conditions, put something dangerous in a time-out zone

Napoleon using it's core power is genuine just a "whatever" moment, it's not even good at capturing control points because it can't force enemies off of a control point (again, point in favor of the Kutz, expulsion zone + blinkshield can genuinely just auto-win you a control point game )
>>
Thinking more about the displacer, hear me out
What if it was a Reliable 10 weapon

Still keeps it's meme worthy 10 heat and loading, doesn't change how much damage it puts out in niche builds etc
but it does give it a reason to exist outside of niche builds: it's a guaranteed deletion button, if you know something has 10 health or less you can make it stop being a problem

which actually would make it fit support builds that don't want to pull the trigger on a weapon that often quite well

Genuine displacer as main weapon builds still want to actually hit with it to trigger the bonus damage they're stacking on it
>>
>>98576220
Reliable 10 feels bit too much. You could easily build an overwhelming OC loop around it. I feel like 6 would be more reasonable.
>>
>>98576207
What if the effects of its core power spread in a lesser form to other characters in burst radius? Then it'd be much harder to ignore. It still leaves it pretty imponent the rest of the time.
>>
>>98576266
maybe yeh, though admittedly it being a "fuck you and your ace auto dodge bullshit" button would be hilarious
definitely needs some kind of reliable, since it's meant to be a weapon that just deletes an area from existence

I wrote a quick revision of the Napoleon license based on some of the suggestions posted here, to make its systems more viable while also allowing the frame to do some Defender duties.

What do you think?
>>
>>98561947
Tom and Co quite literally cloned dnd 4e to make lancer. If you refluff the 'mechs' as human fighter, elf archer, dwarf cleric, teifling warlock, etc, and the enemies as orcs, goblins, etc, nothing actually changes and the game actually feels like it fits better.
Because, you know, its a fantasy skirmish system trying to be a mech rpg and it lacks every single thing a mech game should have. Like location damage, system damage, mobility restrictiveness, ammo counts, maintenance and rules for degradation if said maintenance is not performed, repair and rearm rules, rules for pilots doing stuff out of the cockpit, etc, etc, etc....
Oh and everything is magically 3d printed but you need loicenses and dont you dare jailbreak that system or the communist megacorps elite terf hunters will come hunt you down... just hang around for the 200 years they take to show up (in reality commiebot foresaw this and dispatched them 200 years ago, they should be arriving now)

Because the mechs don't actually do shit in the setting, they do mop up duty, colonial policing, and the odd bit of behind the lines stuff and terrorism on targeted populations.
The real stars who win the wars and do all the important fighting are the space fleets that shoot each other from solar systems away with muh magic paracausial weapons with magic paracausial targeting systems to ensure their relativistic kill clouds hit.

Lancers community follows the games communist leaning. You are with the party and for the party or you are a kulak/capitalist/dissenter/counter revolutionary and must be punished. Thankfully they can't send you to irl gulag (they would if they could) but they will ban you from any space they control and try to bar your works from being used. And they do have informants in every space they do not control but can access, including unrelated ones. One of the ones responding to queeftopia anon before they got him range banned was using his handle from the Nechronica discord server.

>>
>>98576686
the phase-ready change is not necessarily a good one, there's some fun things possible with invisibility ignoring abilities and it that shouldn't be discounted

core power is very strong this way, would need some playtesting to see how it functions but it does turn you into a very tactical "nope" bubble and can even be used offensively to shut down some mechs so looks interesting

the displacer change is a flat out nerf for most builds, it turns it from one meme into another meme but this time it's one that's less open for creativity

also add one of the L3 things to L2 since it's 2 traits per license level
>>
>>98576705
>change that nanobot whip to 1d6 kinetic 1d6 burn and make swarm/hive nanites accurate, make it appealing to ever go 3 licenses in balor
alternatively make the pull thing into an "on hit target makes an agility save, on crit target automatically fails this save"
>>
>>98576711
>honestly ill let someone smarter than me think of something to make the fusion rifle and slag cannon appealing at all, i got nothing
Fusion Rifle is genuinely amazing on a Tokugawa since they can stack a bunch of range increases on it as well as extra damage
that said for anyone else, maybe add a bonus that triggers when you hit someone at exactly 6 range (to avoid it becoming overpowered on a toku) like say, slowed?

>External ammo feed should be in a similar fashion to get some actual synergy going with siege cannon even at a crazy heat cost
Spitballing here so
Protocol: At the start of the next round, reload all loading weapons, while this system is active, the first time each turn you take damage, this system deals an additional 6 explosive damage to you.

>the phase-ready change is not necessarily a good one
I wanted to change it so that it doesn't hinge entirely on having invisibility ignoring abilities to hit. My version also adds a situational utility of making your hit rate floor 50% in case you are facing some bs enemy that would be incredibly hard to hit otherwise.

>>98577006
>External ammo feed
I'd change that to protocol and 4 self heat and keep the rest unchanged.

>Fusion Rifle
Maybe make half of the damage Burn? So at max range it will be 3 energy, 3 burn.
>>
>>98577694
I definitely would make fusion rifle's buffs only work at 6 range rather than at max range, it's already one of the best possible weapons for the Toku and buffing it for them harder might break things

though I suppose 3 extra burn ontop of the 20 or so Toku can put out wouldn't be the worst
>>
>>98576147
Usually I make a post in the previous thread telling people about the new one like this: >>>98558704
>>
>>98578210
That was my idea, 3 burn is something that would be neat for most frames, without making Toku feel broken.
I don't want to add bonuses on exact 6 Range as that would make feel Fusion Tokugawa is gimping itself by abusing its bonus range.

And as a mecha fan your game is an insult, half the 'mechs' are just guys in armour and the rules do nothing to give the impression of actually piloting a mech instead of being a fantasy adventurer whilst handwaving utter bullshit with "muh paracausial giffgaff". Shit, your own writers hate mechs and it shows, they made mechs colonial police units and made the most important military arm the fleet. Its the fleet that wins the wars it says so in your own sacred text. The mechs are an afterthought mix of colonial police, terror units, and propaganda pieces. Even Battletech thought up a way to make mechs strategically important and they have detailed rules for orbital bombardment.

Go play a campaign where you lead the rebellion against the Union and win
>>
Something I thought of that could work as a reward for more mercenary types in a setting where the Utopian pillars are supposedly giving everything is looking at what ThirdCom can't do

And a big one that stood out is that the first contact accords prevent them from extending lifespan beyond 200-ish years, however there's also several mentions of people skirting that and that Ra isn't going to intervene with individual violations only large scale blatant ones

So, if you're willing to have a bit more morally ambiguous interpretation of ThirdCom, the one thing they could offer as reward for exception services would be better types of lifespan enhancements
You give ups a few decades of loyal service and at the end, maybe we give you an experimental treatment that gets you an extra century over baseline, that's not a particularly bad incentive is it
Could even turn that into currency in the long rim sections as well, since it's one of the few technologies that wouldn't just be available to everyone over the Omninet

The point is those settings have an established background to give somewhere for adventures to take place but otherwise they expect you to go do your own thing.
Lancer has an established good guy faction whom the writers have specifically written cannot lose, and have additional clauses that state any campaign that results in a setback for them is retroactively a simulation run by the godbot that then takes steps to prevent ever happening. No other setting I know of writes a clause like that in.
>run it in a homebrew setting where that stuff doesnt exist like i do.
Why? There are actual mech games out there that make the mechs feel like mechs instead of dnd characters, I would rather use those.
>the combat is fun
At best it is mediocre and the fact it needs an app to play is a damning inditement
>and the out of mech stuff is too when you add blood money and the ktb stuff
You should not have to add a splat and fan content just to get the bare minimum of what any other mech rpg would offer you, and given its a 4e derivative I somehow doubt it does anything good.

It doesn't need an app to play. I played my last game just fine through roll 20, only using the app for a character sheet to reference as needed. Just because they have a really good tool for running games doesn't mean the tool is a necessity.
>Organic engagement
I asked a legit question because I'm starting a game in like 3 days and haven't played a support build before. My last two mechs were a hot-blooded Ghengis pilot and a druglord Hydra swarm pilot.

>good guy faction whom the writers have specifically written cannot lose

considering the major Ls that Union has taken this isnt very true. in fact the gay commie godbots accidentally manifested space cthulhu and they had to bend the fucking knee to the thing to not get the robot apocalypse thrown on them

>At best it is mediocre and the fact it needs an app to play is a damning inditement

its fun and modular once you get into it and the rules are simple enough for DND normies like my group to understand while still having enough crunch with different interactions to be pretty deep. what issues do you have gameplay wise since you want to talk not just builds?

>I somehow doubt it does anything good

ktb adds some blades lite mechanics which im a fan of because I really like blades. blood money is a really winner because it adds money and diamond dog base building. do you have suggestions on another mech game that has good mechanics for out of combat i can take a look at?
>>
>>98583081
We're playing with some new players and so GM only wants to use core and the module we're running (Solstice Rain)

It's easy, you play as Gaalsien and suddenly you have tons of options:
>Want to try to act civilized and go for some cosmopolitan campaign of integrating into society or setting up a doomsday cult?
Head north and integrate into The northern Coalition
>Want to play a madmax survival on a dying planet?
Raid Maanan convoys, get in constant clashes with Soban
>Want an existential horror scifi?
Encounter the godless Khaaneph and witness true desert nihilism

Gaalsien are the only kith who experienced and saw everything and they have long history. Extremely underrated Kiith.

The only problem is that DoK and Homeworld in general is heavily based on movement so any mech that would not be on par with something like Armored Core VI would be too slow for life in desert.

gotcha, i would go to lancaster 3 for the overshield system, and then sysop and grease monkey will be great. grab turret drones and grenades as well and dont be afraid to use them with grease monkey 1 and your repair cap

I have never played Lancer, but that's clearly the same artist as Kill Six Billion Demons. Awesome.
>>
>>98581417
The builds are part of the gameplay. That's how you interact with the sitreps your GM provides. You do know how the game works, right? It would be really retarded of you otherwise.

Actually, looking at the Argonaut Shield. Does it apply your own resistances or armor against the damage YOU take?

The text says: "however, you take half of the damage your target would take before calculating Armor and Resistance."

Does that just mean I don't benefit from their armor and resistance, or I can't even benefit from my own?
>>
>>98584912
you pool all the raw incoming damage together, then split it in half
then the half going to your ally gets subjected to your ally's armor and resistance and the half that goes for you gets subjected to your armor and resistance

it's why argonaut shield is so good on a drake and it's worth going to 4 armor, since if the incoming damage in total is 8 or less you take 0 damage from argonaut

it's why it's also pretty darn good on a white witch
>>
>>98584912
It means you take the damage you inflicted to the enemy before being reduced by their armor or resistance, and then apply half of it to yourself, then you reduce it with armor or resistance
>>
Question about the Viceroy's ability
Would it let you apply CQB-only mods to Launchers?

Thinking about a knockback-heavy build for it with the HAMMER U-RPL with a supermassive mod but not sure if that's legal
>>
>>98584880
Give the tranny your money, anon
>>
>>98585093
The rules do what they say. Because the Viceroy treats it's launchers as CQB, it can apply CCB mods to them. The frame trait does not specify that it only applies during combat, so it does not.

This is the same case as the Tagetes being able to apply Rifle mods to weapons it turns into Rifles, and being able to use the Crackshot Talent with said converted Rifles.

That's the Nelson's exact gimmick.
>>
>>98581632

The really butthurt people will say it's because the lore indicates any campaign you run is fake and doesn't happen in the true lore of the game. I don't know how that's materially different from any other fucking ttrpg you play. You're not changing the Forgotten Realms in your little home game, and if you piss in the God Emperor's mouth at your table, they aren't going to write a novel about it. But because the setting says it has computers in it that simulate possible worlds and people's games take place in those worlds, suddenly the chuds take that as gospel and it somehow ruins the game for them.

The Skirmisher Talent lets you gain free movement every time you Skirmish (but NOT when you Barrage with Superheavy weapons or two weapons).

The Nelson, Blackbeard, and Mourning Cloak are all good frames for fast hard-hitting melee strikers. (The Atlas is also good if your group is using supplemental first-party stuff). Depending on what flavor of FAST you want.

-The Nelson is pure speed, but lacks a hard-hitting weapon native to it's license. Its the skirmisher. It has it's own built-in version of the Skirmisher talent which stacks with the Talent.

-The Blackbeard is not quite as fast as the Nelson, but is still surprisingly fast. It's main gimmick is grappling things with no penalties to itself for grappling, so you can kidnap enemies and drag them off like a horror-movie monster while shoving a chainsaw axe into the face.

The Mourning Cloak plays kind of like a D&D rogue. Very fast (almost as fast as the Nelson with the right build), find targets who are away from their allies and "assassinate" them with heavy damage strikes. Has abilities that let it teleport it's movement speed (sometimes faster than the nelson because you can ignore terrain this way) and phase out of reality like a ghost.

The Atlas (if your group allows it) is pretty much Metal Gear Rising. Small size 1/2 frame with a Katana that specializes in being fast and killing larger larger frames.

You may also see the Tokugawa and think it is a melee mech. You can play it this way if you want, but it's honestly much better used with long-range builds.
>>
>>98585330
alright, probably a bad idea to put overkill on a 2(4 possibly if I go OP caliber + nuclear cavalier)d6 weapon on an SSC frame with 6 heat cap but at least it's fun to have a knockback 3 weapon that can be used both for overwatch and for heavy gunner
>>
>>98585387
you can get a Zheng to be pretty fast as well with it's core trait
and the Amber Phantom makes for a damn good melee skirmisher as well

both are faster than a Toku
though there is the Enkidu, yes technically it has 3 speed but literally nobody gets in an Enkidu without planning for it to be in the danger zone 24/7

I just wonder what they're getting out of this aside from an attempted colonization.

These threads were totally empty outside people shitting on the game like a month ago with one or two desperate shills running damage control until one day they're suddenly getting bumped at suspicious times and full of clearly coordinated "discussion".
>>
>attempted colonisation
A stealth ERP thread died for this... the tragedy...
>>
>>98586378
Take your meds
>>
>>98586378
There are obviously some dedicated fans who see it as a mission to talk about it here, and they have more stamina than the people who shit on Lancer in every thread.
I've shit on Lancer in lots of threads. But there's always another. At this point I've already said everything there is to say. I think the game's shit, the lore's shit, basically everything about Lancer is incompetent and bad except the art, which is a matter of taste.
But these people just have their own personal politics and taste for highly gamified slop, so things that seem like problems for you and me just don't matter to them.
>>
>>98586585
>dedicated fans
whole two of them lmao
>>
>>98585387
Ya I looked over the various mechs and the blackbeard speaks to me, so i will be using it as base frame and build from there. I just beed to figure out how hate so do with it
>>
Is there a reason to get more than two ranks in any pilot skill? Considering how bonus dice work it feels like getting a +6 doesn't really do much compared to a +4 and it would be best to just get more skills

Also, is downtime really important in this game? As in, enough that you have entire sessions dedicated to it? Because if the level cap is 12 and you level up after every mission you do, if you do one mission per session, one session a week, your game essentially ends in 3 months
>>
>>98586810
>Also, is downtime really important in this game? As in, enough that you have entire sessions dedicated to it?
Never had a session be dedicated to downtime.

anon, im just an idiot who has too much free time waiting for work season to pick up, im posting my autistic shit on the battletech, d&d and 40k general because im a fucking retard who had something in my head break when serving in a self propelled artillery piece during conscription.
i like big guns and big machines and i like rpg's i started playing lancer because my rpg group and wargaming group has no overlap so it was easier to sell the system to my player rather than mechwarrior destiny or a time of war and i wanted to make my own little homebrew sector of space with all my personal bullshit in it. you fucking paranoid nigger

Anyone got the PDF and LCP for Blood Money? I ain't paying 10 bucks for a game's band-aid.
>>
>>98586810

A "Mission" is sort of loosely defined, but it generally constitutes 3-4 sitrep combats plus whatever downtime happens between them. If you are getting through 3-4 combats in a single session, you are a more powerful gamer than I am.

My players have a lot of downtime, but they are an RP heavy group that likes to interact with NPCs, do personal little missions, or sometimes do out of mech combats and such. Mostly what downtime is good mechanically for is doing downtime activities, which can help you get reserves or gain intelligence on upcoming battles.

So is downtime important? That's really going to depend on your table, but I don't think it's something that should be skipped entirely. It's sort of the RP part of this mech RPG.
>>
>>98589310
>or sometimes do out of mech combats and such
Do you just run it as skill checks or use a different system?
>>
>>98589972
I run is as skill checks with clocks using the bond system from the KTB book. There's no reason you couldn't use another system or Blood Money or something, but I find that the mech fights already provide enough tactical gameplay that I don't miss having more robust out of mech rules.

But I would definitely use the KTB book for it's Blades in the Dark light system. That does make things more engaging than the default rules in the core book.
