"After all these years, they still search" edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

As for the weather that are not done yet, I'd propose these conditions:

>Freezing
At the beginning of every turn, roll a d3. On a roll of 3, all units must pass a strength test. If they don't pass, they get a [/]. This action is ignored if they are within 3 hexes from a "Campfire".

>Blizzard
Causes 1 obscurity to be in effect. All units have a -1 penalty to their movement.

>Deep Fog
Causes 2 obscurity to be in effect. All ranged attack have a +2 penalty to their roll.

>Sandstorm
All units have a -1 penalty to their movement. All "mechanical" units must roll a d10 every time they spend an AP. If they roll a 1, they take [/] damage.

>Frog Rain
At the beginning of every movement, roll a d3. On a 3, all units need to pass a discipline test. If failed, the player can choose to either take 1 dread or take one [/] damage to the unit.
>>
>Alternative Scenarios
One I've had in mind for a while is an urban gamemode where you and the other expedition are guests in some sort of deep city. What that means practically is that any violence/stealing has to occur out of LoS of the neutral crowd and guard units or risk them turning hostile. It might be a headache to run though.

I had a few already done from back then, and then I wrote the rest today during my shift, I can push around the "clear" results to include a few of these.
>>98567398
I was trying to come up with an "aggro" mechanic to make running "extraction" scenarios where both players are really against an AI, it sorta reminds me of that. Would the city require a different map, or would we just scatter a bunch of Deep Buildings?
>>
>>98569182
>Would the city require a different map, or would we just scatter a bunch of Deep Buildings?
We could probably start by jigging it so that half the cavern walls placed are replaced with fortified walls, and then each player can scatter some of the Deepfolk structures like Hamlets around. Aside from that the only custom stuff that would be needed would be a guard NPC (could just take from any standard faction soldier) and a crowd terrain/blob unit which will slow, redirect, or pickpocket units that try to cross it.

Having rules about placement distances would probably be the best way to get it looking like a city. For this scenario having the normal NPC control methods I think would work since you could move guards away from your expedition when you want to do sneaky stuff or towards your opponents to increase their odds of getting caught, same with crowds to slow or distract.

As for an extraction gamemode (Sounds perfect for hordes of Lemurs) the best way to do Aggro I think would just be to have a couple spread out spawning points around the edges or center of the map, depending, and then have the spawned units always target the closest player unit. If you wanted to be complicated you could have it so that the opposing player always controls any units closer to the other player's expedition than their own but that might not work greatly.

>Frog Rain
Eusocial Roof-Frogs that die off in droves?
>>
>>98573059
The mnemosynian roof frog (Dryophytes Mnemosyniensis) is a species of amphibian located in the stalagtite formations across the 3rd and 4th layers. This species of frog are minute, often the size of a man's thumb, and sporting a brownish grey hue. Its reddish eyes are bigger than other frogs', allowing them a much better vision. This heightened sense of sight allows them to hunt the many insect colonies attracted by the vegetation of the roofs, despite the refraction of the INNER SVN. It also helps them to make extraordinarily precise jumps, something of vital importance considering their habitat. Their jump strength is also considerable, although many experts believe that the spread of this species is mostly due to its ability to climb and to cling to harsh surfaces, moving from one stalagtite to the next. This species is also famous within Agartha due to the "frog rain" phenomenon. Once every year, the male frogs go into heat, and their eyes go from a deep red to a clear yellow. During this stage, they'll begin competing for females, trying to jump great heights or fight with other males for the right to mate. In this stage of frenzy, the famed precision of the roof frog is lost, and many begin to fail their jumps, plummeting to their doom. It is unknown what exactly causes this stage of excitement on them, but whatever it is, it lasts between a couple of minutes to around an hour, and it can lead to most of the male frog population falling into the ground, where they'll either die from the impact or be easy prey to the local fauna. Once this ends, the males' eyes go back to normal and reproduction takes place, with the females laying their eggs in any pool of non-frozen water they can find. During this time, the loss of a considerable part of the frog population gives rise to an equal increase in the insect population, allowing many insects to lay their larvae at the same time, perfect prey for the tadpoles.
>>
>>98573311
Many locals see these "frog rain" events as an omen of ill fortune. Many tribes refrain from partaking in war near one of these events, and there are even tales of battles that have been halted by a sudden amphibian dounpour. The only group that is partially immune to this superstition are the sky clans. Many sky clans consider the roof frogs as creatures of ill fortune as well, but they are also gathered for the making of certain medicinal remedies. Many sky priests use the roof frog eyes to make concoctions that, in their lore, heightens the eyesight of those who drink it, though it is also considered something risky, as it can also lead to a case of intoxication, leaving the subject bedridden for at least a week or two. Many sky clan youths also keep these frogs as pets, to then hurl them down into the floor, to scare the people living below them.
>>
>>98573349
The distribution of this species is greatly widespread across all the roof areas of Mnemosynia and Pangea, though they tend to avoid parts of the roof in frequent contact with volcanic ash and gases. Interestingly, the roof frogs are practically unheard of in the roofs of Panthalassa. Despite the deep roof vegetation and the vertical jungles of the 5th layer, this species are almost never seen in the stalagtites of Panthalassa. Many believe that the more varied wildlife, as well as more roof predators, make the roof frog unable to expand to the same level as with the other layers, especially with its mating customs causing havoc to their numbers every season.

It might could work with high Obscurity.

I debate in my head if it would be comfier to live in a Muan city-state or a Stalagmite-house of the Sky People.

If I was less iffy about heights it would absolutely be the latter. No neighbors, great lighting, the ability to drop trash on the groundlings, like a dream really.

Regarding Denmark, I have a rough timeline worked out, and some new ideas for the direction in which to take it, in other words, how to make it a better fit for the world. There’s a part of me that wants to wait until i have “something to show for myself” before saying anything, but i don’t know when that will be. The core idea is to have Christian IX abdicate in favor of his son in ‘65, and then for Fredrick VIII to go missing on a trip to doggerland, resulting in his younger brother, George I of the Hellenes becoming “George Christian I of the Hellenes and Danes”, and the end of hereditary rule in Denmark, with it reverting to an elected monarchy. Christian IX abdicates in ‘65 not only because of the Iceland/Doggerland deal being stacked on top of the disasters of ‘64, but also because of what comes to light as a result of the Fifth Abomination War, when the civil war in Italy allowed many Danish POWs to escape, along with help from some sympathetic Austrians. They return home and tell their tale, and then, presumably in response, certain letters are leaked, the Kongens Korrespondance, in which Christian XI asks Bismark (is it Bismark?) if Denmark can join the German Confederation. Apparently he really did write such a letter and send it through Leopold II, but that’s so convenient for my purposes that i find it hard to believe without having seen the letter, which i have not. On the other hand, i haven’t looked that hard, because it is a good story. Regardless of if it’s an addition to history or fiction, i say we add letters to London asking for aid in exchange for Iceland. It’s funny to imagine what those letters would look like, and it has other obvious benefits for creating a crisis.

So, to sum up, there’s already this feeling of “you had one job” and “what good are you now?” surrounding him, and his heavy hand is resented, but everybody’s too tired to really do anything about it, and, hey, it could be worse. Then Iceland happens and those feelings are intensified, and then the Stromboli Survivors return and everybody realizes that it already is worse, and people get mad enough to balance out the tiredness, and then Someone (un agent de La Ombre) leaks the letters and it becomes the Ash Wednesday Crisis. Someone else has to talk the fall for that, and i was thinking maybe Leopold is blamed for this personally, resulting in him going underground, and starting his own New Mu City-State. I hear they are always looking for experienced franchisees, and it might would result in him seeing more use, having more of a place mechanically. I guess that’s really two ideas about Leopold packed together. Maybe he takes the blame voluntarily, as he already planned on going underground. Hell, maybe he really did it. We can leave it open to interpretation. I’ve skipped over a lot of details here, but i do have details in mind, like the Leopold thing. The problem is those details tend to be conflicting, and hard to present, and i’m not a good writer in the first place.

Well, then there is his son Fredrick VIII, he comes in, cleans house best he can in the short time he has, then goes missing in Doggerland. I imagine he visits to promote the place, show it ain’t so bad, and try and improve his father’s reputation. This is mainly an excuse to get the crown to his younger brother, but it also adds to the atmosphere of Doggerland, and from it naturally follows the explanation for why lighthouses are special to Denmark: his brother builds a big one there in his honor. And, after all, he’s only presumed dead, so maybe this will guide him home, or else his soul to the arms of the lord. It recalls old folklore about bells, but for the people in the story it has other symbolism. Now, his brother, George Christian I of the Hellenes and Danes, and how he becomes so. The country is in crisis, so even though he’s already King of the Hellenes, the Great Powers decide it’s best if he be allowed to take the Danish crown, so long as he understands the situation. So, some very important people sit down with him to have a very important conversation, and then his name is extended by a substantial number of characters. “There is to be no Greco-Danish abomination”, is what he’s told, and he understands. There is a condition imposed, one readily accepted, that Denmark should revert to an elected monarchy. He gets advisors from abroad to help him out. Despite his inexperience he proves a good king to both peoples. He is mostly hands off, but keeps up with things, and gets involved at the right times, in the right ways. But more relevant to us, are the large expeditions he launches to find out if Doggerland can accessed from Agartha, and to establish diplomatic relations with Atlantis.
>>

This leads me to Orichalcum Bogs. This is something i imagine could be a feature of Doggerland, toxic bogs which are discovered to be so due to a high considerations of elemental orichalcum. They’re a reflection of real life iron bogs. Doggerland rose from the bottom of the sea, and orichalcum is associated with Atlantis, which is on the bottom of the sea (and/or agartha), so it makes sense to me. Narratively it introduces a real value to Doggerland, even if a slight one, as it is surely much less efficient to process Doggerland bog orichalcum than to important it from the deep. Regardless, it helps pain a picture of Doggerland, and give the colonial interactions with it some much needed structure, without relying on an entrance. And this bogs may have other treasures. I’d really like to do something with bog bodies, but i’m not sure what. Well, all this orichalcum, if it could be used in gunsmithing, might allow the use of guncotten as a propellant, in certain specialized arms, which would in turn allow implementing the Madsden in a way that i can live with. Maybe there is also some North Sea Neptunium around, but i’m not so sure about that. I imagine neptunium rapidly turns to water when take to the surface, as a result of decompression, but maybe the neptunium is under the orichalcum and has in that way been protected. I do like them having more wells. I imagine there is some Danish involvement in the nercowars, but nothing disruptive, just enough that you can taste it, you know?

That’s it for lore, but i naturally have mechanical ideas as well. I don’t want to get into that, but i will say that i’d like to have the Stromboli Survivor to be the second hero, and have to the Krigsveteran get around more, being like a sort of psuedo Warfex lore-wise, but more like a Returned Noble mechanically. I view the heroes as the heart of any faction, so the rest will follow that.

I've skimmed the threads I've missed, but that's all. I'm not really seriously caught up.
I'm happy working in my little corner. I don't want to intrude. I hate to ask but I'd really appreciate it if 2eanon could update the template in the mediafire.

It made me happy to see Lighthouse stuff. I think the Lighthouse Keeper should be as available as the Lighthouse itself. Rather than being exclusive to Denmark, i think it’d be better if they had the exclusive ability to take him as a Hero, maybe even a Character, freeing up the Leader slot. He’s a cool guy, it’d be a shame to hide him under a bushel.

I like the Folklorist, but it should really be a German unit, or at least not Danish: There is no Dansk Mytology. The whole thing is just too tied up with the Brothers Grimm. But something along the same lines, a Philologist, could be cool. I’m not sure what he’d do, but he’d do something. Maybe he can learn Muic Maldictions from Fragments of Forgotten Lore? It's old chart lore that the Atlantian dialect of Ancient Greek is especially hard to make out, so maybe he allows you to recruit certain Atlantian units as mercs. Maybe he just gives some kind of bonus to Parleys.

I dislike like the Damned Dane. I tried to make him work as a character, or a hero, but i couldn’t. However, i think he can be saved by focusing in on the dog, and turning him into an elite, 1800s Siris Patrol for Doggerland. He straps a candle to his dog, and goes around buffing and debuffing models as they are “illuminated by a dog”. So, that sentry a few posts up really ought to have a pup.

As for mercenaries, aside from the regular suite, Ambitious Evzones, Olm-Herders, and maybe Malcomite Rebels.

They were meant to be connected to Hyperborea through Whalurs and the Golden Syndicate, but I'm more than fine to cut that line.

I like the stuff with the letter and George I for the most part, but having Leopold II go underground permanently as a result seems odd since it's not even his own nation he was messing with. I'd rather see it as just another scandal on the ever-growing pile connected to him and Leopoldville.

As for resources on Doggerland, I think having it be a white elephant that Denmark holds onto with sheer grit rather than a potential source of any profit makes for a better story, but if it was to have some sort of treasure Neptunium would make a lot more sense than Orichalcum, since the latter was originally (in real mythology) described as an alloy and in my admittedly dubious headcanon is found in deposits only in areas where hundreds of generations of Atlantean have discarded orichalcum items. Plus, North Sea Oil is a good thing to tie to Neptunium. You could even have it so that Doggerland Neptunium is what preserves the bog bodies of ancient Doggerlanders. I think that's semi-feasible from a chemical perspective.

Rules-wise I think the Stromboli Survivor thing would work better as a trait than a specific hero unit, I'm not sure how much mileage you could get out of it otherwise.

A couple of pointers taking into account the lore from the wiki and the timeline (btw, the timeline on the wiki has not been updated, I have to get on that).

>The king Fredrick VIII goes missing in Doggerland in 65

I don't think any royal would get anywhere near Doggerland after the first massacre in 1862 (hell, they probably wouldn't be allowed to). Much less before the Second Great Push, the one that actually got results.

>Changing into an elected monarchy
As long as it stays as a constitutional monarchy, I have no problem with this.

>Christian IX has to abdicate for the Kongens Korrespondance to Bismark
I have never heard of this OTL. Source? Lore-wise, I can see it working with some tweaks. Bismark was no stranger to using tweaked correspondance to push for conflict, so somehow engineering the takeover of the duchies through this would work, depending on how we word it.

>add letters to London asking for aid in exchange for Iceland
Unless we specify that the british saw these cards and used them as justification for the annexation later on (they are too weak to defend them, we don't want the prussians to own Iceland through an absorbed Denmark, and we don't want to go to war with Prussia), I'd say we don't do this.

>Leopold to take the fall and takes the fall
I don't really follow the logic here. It would have to change a lot from the Leopold II and Leopoldville lore.

>Christian I to become the king of Denmark, but cannot be the king of both Denmark and Greece
This idea terrifies me for no other reason than to add yet another factor to the Second Oriental Crisis. If he is to become king of Denmark, someone else should move into the throne of greece. "There is to be no Greco-Danish abomination" indeed.

>to establish diplomatic relations with Atlantis
Why that one aspect in particular? Finding out whether Doggerland has an entrance to the deep (and more importantly, to where) should come first in the Doggerland affairs. I can imagine regular diplomatic relations with Atlantis could be done through Paris.

>Orichalcum Bogs
I don't dislike the idea, but it mixes poorly with the sheer difficulty of exploring the depths of the island's forests.

I'll read this in more detail during my shift. I had this idea about France sending a very large, mostly military Expedition in the 3rd, toward the Atlantean colonies to the far north-west, as an exercise in flexing their muscles and logistics (the more conservatives in the Armee have been making noise about how Orleans is letting everyone walk over them, how the British treaties are unfair, how Germany walking an army in Paris was an national insult, etc, etc...). The Expedition ends up being Fallen-Paris and Orleans meeting the hawks halfway, a soft demonstration of power designed to remind everyone that France is still the primary Colonial power in Mnemosynia and that it can act on its own, but also, not to actually cause any violent aggravation between the colonies. Parts of this would be that France has allowed small detachments from strategically selected nations to be embedded in the Expedition, in particular Americans, Canadians, Danes and others, in order to set up a line of trading posts along the Expedition's path (which would be an insane 10k+ km trek at a rough estimate). The stated logic behind this is to open up European markets to Atlantean goods, but its also very obviously a move to further show France being willing to "stand on its own", somewhat ironically.
In any case, this could justify the limited presence of Danes and some growing outposts/soon-to-be-colonies.
> in other news
The week was busier than I expected, I only had the time to work a bit on the main rulebook. It is still pretty far from being ready, but the Morale section should be done, I added some details to the Equipment & Loadout section regarding handing over consumable items between models,
For the Encounter Random Events (not the 3d6 list, the book) I also made a "diplomatic relations" list to be used as bonus to Control roll of NPCs spawned, the events will let you spawn player faction models as NPC.

In the case of Canadians, it would be a small company built from veterans of the 1st Ontario and Quebec Rifles, volunteer citizen militia which joined the Wolseley Expedition in 1870 and would thus have some experience in trekking across those kinds of distances.. But the point of the international component of the Expedition would be to scatter smaller trade outposts along the river to sustain trade in those countries, trade which in some part will likely pass through Fallen-Paris and the French colonies, and over the market it has an advantage regardless.
I would like the whole thing to be a very limited form of posturing, something calculated by Orleans to seem like its a screw you to Cunningham and Wilhem to the more hawkish part of France, which I think would be waking up from torpor around this point, but would be mostly just a bit unnerving to either (the Expedition would be well under 2000 men, which could not threathen either the German or British colonies, but it does land very damn close).
All of which would inevitably get fucked over once La Ombre decides to do what La Ombre does and false flag someone while wearing modern French colours.

I think I calculated a range of around 60-80km per hexes, given a 15% reduction between the layers and a complete map, so yeah, that's 1800km of coast between them.
Which would also mean the French Expedition would never come within a 100km of either borders.
>>
>>98585667
I imagine that settling the underground is quite a big task, and manpower is always scarce. Even if the parisian colonies are the most densely populated ones in terms of epigean settlers (plus the metis and the agarthan integres), the french would use anyone willing to go into the deep. Though if they are not directly french, they should really go to Basse Abyssinie. One of the Basse Abyssinie's biggest issues is that most french colonials go to the much safer parisian colonies, and thus the french authorities have to fill it with anyone willing, even if it is from other french speaking countries (plus the ethiopean auxiliaries tied to the Treaty of Marseille).

The mask is based on the Death masks of Mycenae found by Schliemann. The script is Linear A gibberish. Origianally I tried something more like Gargoyle from the show but this happened instead. I also tried to put the Neo-Atlantis symbol on his forehead but couldn't get it looking right.

I really like the pendulum simile. It's very evocative.

Celebratory Wojack Time!
>Senator Bophades
-Yes, that's his real name
-Singlehandedly responsible for both the Ambrosia epidemic and the Psycho-socialites' mobilization
-He is quite proud of that

One space above the prince.

This one took longer than the prince despite being in theory less complicated. I'm not sure why.

If anyone has ones they want to see but don't have the time/lack of shame enough to make a wojack please put them here. I could use the help with comedic writing.

Thank you. I might try to turn the campaign into a more worked out story. Beside "we're hunting for the treasure of a lost Atlan/Atlantean dynasty I didn't have anything really in mind with the story, but the random events have been working with us to build a larger narrative, which I really enjoy.
I'll post Germany day 2 this evening, then day 3 in the following days. Last game (more than likely) should be on next Monday.

Thinking about the good senator some.

He's an odd personality to consider. From the quotes we have he seems like a weird mix of Gruff, Gregarious, Noblility, and a Great War "Lions led by Donkeys" sort of general. The big thing that ties it together I think is that he is smarter than he lets on. Unlike the classic meme of the general ordering a fruitless charge on the same position I think he fully understands the cost of such actions. We see he's really willing to try new technologies and invite surfacers down to teach the Atlanteans new ways of fighting and as a unit in game his debuffs are only to morale, not performance fighting-wise.

Brian Blessed's performance of John Silver comes to mind a bit. Not just appearance-wise (although he would be who I pick to play Bophades for the short-lived 1991 Agarthan Live Action Series), but also in that sense of being very friendly and boisterous on the surface while simultaneously ruthless and cunning. I wish I had been able to give him that devilish grin on the jak but it didn't come out right when I tried.

It is kind of funny to imagine his "Blueblood Blues" rule is not because of his own classism but because the men under his command know what he's capable of while the nobles in his expeditions are fooled by his friendly attitude.

Now that we're talking about Atlantis and Atlan, how big are atlantean and atlan clashes within Pangea? In Panthalassa there is the clash for control of the bigger cities, but in Pangea, where Atlan has most of its territory, Atlantis has a relatively small enclave. Not to mention their borders are quite far from each other (and with Nouvelle Algerie in the middle, which adds an interesting point of tension between all of them).

How powerful is Atlan within Pangea actually? Is it a matter of, if they fully push the atlanteans away from Pangea, they'll be too weak to fight against New Mu? And if so, is there some sort of alliance between New Mu and Atlantis against Atlan? Or do both fight Atlan by themselves?

My assumption is that if Atlan raids near New Wellington then they'd definitely be raiding around the Atlantean colonies as well on the 4th given their similar distance. Flying mounts help here one assumes. Before the rise of the Titking Pangea would have been the main front of the Eternal War, with Atlantis owning all of the currently Atlan-controlled areas of the 5th until relatively recently.

Something else that comes to mind is that before the start of the Eternal War, at the height of post-fall Atlantean power, they probably controlled the strip between modern Atlan and their colonies. Franklin and Nouvelle Algerie are either on the border or within a vast swathe of ruins, minor successor states, and undead conquistadors.

>How powerful is Atlan within Pangea actually?
To me, Atlan is at the about the zenith of their power. The Titking and his policies gave them a massive shot in the arm several decades ago, but the rot is starting to set back in again. Too far to the frontlines, too much infighting behind the increasingly paranoid king's back, and all the while Atlantis slowly starts to modernize while Atlan cannot (even if they bought weapons and machines from Austria they can't make good use of them due to the spring-gunner distaste and the unbelievably slave-based economy)

The funny thing about Atlan's strength vs New Mu is that they can always push back as hard as you can, but they rarely go further. Old Mu will send staggering power against an aggressor but rarely affords the same privileges when New Mu wants to push outwards. Mostly they seem content to sit back and let the tithes flow down, expanding through diplomacy as with Hawaii rather than outright conquest. This is why the New York Raid and Hokkaido both failed by the way, since New Mu on its own does poorly on the strategic scale without eldritch backup. But I'm getting sidetracked.
>>
>>98612121
>Is it a matter of, if they fully push the Atlanteans away from Pangea, they'll be too weak to fight against New Mu?
In this case I think it is more to do with how much they've committed to the 5th layer. They can either march across the gap to the colonies, with a massive backline and colonials on both sides to annoy them, or they can go down the entrance in their backyard, shrug as a few Immortals and Titanium Miners go a bit mad, and commence fighting on the extremely active front of Gulper Eel Island.

New Mu is certainly a big concern too though, especially since the City-States most capable of organizing an effective attack without Old Mu are up along the Atlan border.

>Is there some sort of alliance between New Mu and Atlantis against Atlan?
This was touched on a few years ago, but it is actually the opposite situation. Atlan and Atlantis are both from a much more similar cloth culturally, and have both been fighting Mu for a lot longer than each other. The lore we have says that there have been no more alliances since the Titking's rise, but that before that point there would occasionally be temporary informal alliances between Atlantis and Atlan to ward off the Muan navy or especially vigorous attacks from the clans.

The Atlanteans might be decadent fools puppeteered by conspiratorial rites and bureaucrat-nobles, and Atlan might be a coterie of squabbling sociopathic slavers held together by a single shouting man in armour, but at least neither of them have any tentacles or a desire to end reality as we know it.

>the short-lived 1991 Agarthan Live Action Series
I saw a youtube video about this recently. Apparently there was some trouble with Lucas Arts, and that's why it got canceled, but it all worked out, and we got the adventure game. All of the FMV footage used in the game was shot for the show, and that's why it looks so good, and the reason the dialog is all dubbed over is because they were originally talking to Illinois Jack, not the Heiress Explorer. That's also why some of the frames and oddly cropped, and the Heiress herself never appears in FMV until the end screen, though, as you know, those artifacts are more artfully hidden, to say the least. I'd link the video but the channel got deleted soon after.

I don't disagree, but there is already the entrance. I think there should be some place other than the entrance for expeditions to happen, which is why i brought up the bogs, but i think you're right that they're a bad fit, or not the best one. I like your headcanon. I like Neptunium bogs, but bog bodies becomes less interesting in the absence of Orichalcum, which is fine. My dubious headcanon for Neptunium is that it's water that's been compressed by the pressure of the layers while retaining a liquid form, and bring it up through the layers causes it to decompress and evaporate. So, i would imagine the island to be shrouded in mist as the Neptunium trapped in the peat and under the rock rapidly decompresses and evaporates.

I got him mixed up with his father anyway. Still, Leopold I died in 1865, so it could still, and probably should, be that the letters leak under Leopold II. Either way, I agree, it is better as just another scandal.

In a sense that's how it will be. The focus will be on what the hero does with his life after surviving Stromboli, which is to say, he'll be able to spec into supporting various different followers and specialists, which is to be his primary purpose, or into supporting the Krigsvet.

The issue is more preventing some really broken combo than the logic of it. Some Leaders (Cunningham, for example, but every other faction has one or two... lol the Olm Chess Master's Checkmate ability... ) has access to an LP ability that cannot be spammed, and those Leader's Leadership pool are based around that. If we introduce Advisor as a rule, it just cannot be the version that's in the Dane book, some of which adds 4 LP, it would have to be a range of 1~3, and the 3s should probably come on models that have a 20s + price tag to them. We'd also have to ask ourselves if/why a faction like Lemuria, which is all about having "advisors" on the field, doesn't have the rule, and if we really want to deal with increasing the Leadership pool of something like the Chosen King.
If you look for them there's also a few ways to "import" models your faction would not normally have access to (amazon anthropologist, gentleman outlaw, etc) so while its not impossible, it'd be a task to go back and make sure absolutely nothing can be broken as hell.

“Behold this Entrance, dwarf!” I continued. “It has two faces. Two ways come together here: nobody has ever taken them to the end. They contradict themselves; but whoever should walk farther on one of them, and on, farther and farther, do you believe, dwarf, that these ways contradict themselves eternally?”
“All that is straight lies”, murmured the dwarf, contemptuously. ‘ All truth is crooked; time itself is a circle.' And the ram agreed.”

I'm not entirely sure I get the question, if its where do the Leadership cost of actions on models that do not have a Leadership pool themselves is paid from, its always on the Leader's pool. If a Specialist has a 1 AP 1 LP action and uses it, he pays the AP himself, the LP comes from the Leader's.

There wasn't much to draw on here, and I can imagine Lemuria being pretty "bunkered" by Atlantis (and up to a point, Atlan) so they probably don't have that huge of a naval fleet? Still, having them row on the same small canoes as Deepfolks seems wrong.
The ship is relatively cheap for its hull size and the crew you get with it, but that's not a Heavy Armour, and it dies once the Hull is filled, so it can be sunk even by poor shots, if you have enough of those.

Of course, you had me at the appropriate alliteration, but even without that its much better than "Naval Juggernaut" anyways.
For the Tigres-Temple Assassin, the only thing I would change (beside the art, if you don't mind, I really like this one) would be to bump the price a bit (Precog is reaaaally good, although, limiting it to targeting a specific model does debuff it a bit), move the tiger-claws to a "regular" melee list, give it Dual Wielder inborn (I don't think any other melee weapon does, so it would give it a niche), so that at least Mu and a few others can get access to it (its not like it was an unknown weapon on the surface anyways). I would probably price it around 2 Silver given its a grievous, so a ~16 silver model at least.
Its not impossible either that Hidden, the claws and Precog makes the 15 Silver bonus too easy to pull off, but we can try it first before we decide.

Like, this would be imo an appropriate Advisor [3] model. Its in the Special Unit list so you'd need to agree to use those to start with (I'm working on Lemurian "Sponsors" which would unlock Characters for campaigns or for the hell of it, this would be the Tigress Temple one).
She's very costly, and clearly the kind of model you build your Expedition around. The Founding Member is the same rule as the Agarthan Society Academician one, but its because she's a founding member of the Lemurian High Council (no need to redo rules).

I want to check, before I write over someone else's work, there was a mention in the Lemurian lore of a Temple of Forms, but I don't believe that there was anything specific about it.
If that's indeed the case, I'd like to make Lemurian Formalism an ancient branch of the Vedic path of Cultivation, an offshot adapted from the more stringent rules and exercices of the lemurian warrior way for their servant classes, elderly and those that likely won't see battle, so that they don't Degenerate and stay in some relative form of health despite their heavy workload. So, Lemurian yoga. While its one of the largest temples, because of how popular its main base is, it is one of the least influential, because only its very topmost members achieve anything resembling Perfection. And, when they do, its usually the kind of Perfection that removes you completely from society, making you more or less useless to the Lemurian High Council's machination, like the Father of Forms, the Temple's leader.
>>
>>98664921
(also, here, the Advisor [1] is kind of a trap, since this is not a model you want to leave alone at all, you will likely cause Terror on yourself, which will end up eating your +1 LP, but that's sorta the joke with him being hated by all other Lemurians as well.)

Sorry for the late response. I'm mostly worried about some of the units in the portuguese and mughal books (the spanish and japanese books have some as well, but their effect are much more limited). The mughal and portuguese book have a lot of specialists with special actions, and when I wrote them I gave them a LP pool of their own.

However, if we're going with the idea that the leader is the only one that can have a LP pool of its own, then the "advisor" rule was a way to still allow them to use their abilities. It was my mistake to not consider that these can just serve as a massive LP boost to their leader, so I'm thinking of reducing the LP gained with the advisors.

Still, out of these two books in particular, their leaders either have not that good uses to their LP (outside of rally, which I suppose could be an issue), or their LP abilities are so costly abusing them with the leader can render the specialist moot (per example, the rules of the Portuguese Saint are very expensive as it is, and getting an advisor's LP to do them will probably dry them up from LP, thus making them pointless). As per using the Leader's LP to use the specialist, maybe we can clarify that they can only use their ability once per turn, or a limited amount of times per game.

I understand the concern for those two books, and its in part because of the low LP pool of those leaders and that reliance on the "Advisor" rule, for those, we can adjust the pricing so that the support pieces aren't as costly as they would otherwise be in other factions, or perhaps a better way would be to add them a "flaw" rule that is somehow compensated in-faction but isn't outside of it, so exporting them becomes really difficult.
Having some access to Advisor 1~2 in most other factions would probably not be a problem.

It was the right decision as well. The Skull Rock could be explored by passing a Lethal test, which would then allow you to test Awareness, if successful, gain d3(!) Clues. And I didn't limit it either, you could have done that multiple times, but with how the German's Expedition was built, any attempt would have risked a 20+ Silver model. The Hired Hands were a poor choice to send in since they have such poor Awareness.
If we wanted this to last longer than it did, and perhaps have a bit more risk to take damage, one option would have been to cover the entirety of the middle section with Maze tokens, this would have forced us to explore the Island more, take risks with these events more often, and it might have helped "equalizing" the race.
This is a very easy campaign to build up, and I think it exposes the logic of what we can do with the system. Day & Nights, Shelters, multiple zones, but each only "triggered" when we enter them, reinforcement from chests, etc etc. There's a lot of potential with simply redoing the map and the basics
> Territory control scenario, whoever controls key locations at the center of the majority of zones end up wining the campaign.
> Tic Tac Toe game, like territory control, but whoever controls 3 zone in a line wins, added potential flavor, you need to have train tracks connecting through each.
> Under Siege scenario, one player gets the center zone and lots of fortifications, the other gets a larger force, but can only activate a portion of it per turn. The force under siege can only get reinforcements by having them break through the enemy lines. I don't think it would be too hard to do, but we could track Dread per zone for the besieger, and have it gradually lose parts of its larger force, and perhaps a minor victory path for the besieged by exfiltrating the fort's force instead of breaking the siege completely?

I've come to realize that I was playing quite cagey with my forces, in retrospect. It might have been worth pushing the envelope and taking the risk of losing a man or two, in an effort to gain the clues.
Given that the campaign effectively would have required me to take a lethal test either way (either during day 3 with skull rock to gain a clue, or during day 4 during the ingress into the maze), my fixation with maintaining force integrity is what cost me dearly.
It's a bad habit I've developed from playing more elite armies in other game systems, I suspect. In any case, the Japanese novel and audiobook are still in the works. I've had to purchase a new computer, as the rig that contained my audio files suffered some kind of catastrophic failure around three weeks ago. I've been spending time recreating the material to at least push out the third part of the first volume, God willing, by the end of the month.
As the thoughts of a divisional-level game to accompany the naval wargame linger in my mind, have a couple of force organization charts. These are my favourite part of any wargaming manual, but I think we'll have to make some modifications to the NATO-standard designations for the weirder Agarthan units to be properly represented.

Nothing dreadfully wrong with this write-up in my mind, but I might offer some clarity on the Christian IX-Bismarck correspondence. According to Magne Lund & Preben Strange’s Fra Altona til Dybbøl, the OTL interaction involved a communication between Bismarck and the Danish foreign minister after Danish forces were routed from the Danevirge in 1864. This offer entailed the partition of Schleswig, with Denmark retaining the Danish-majority Nordschleswig, while Prussia would take the German-majority Holstein. The Danish foreign minister flatly refused the offer, stating that Denmark would maintain it's territorial integrity to the river Eider, or not at all. Christian IX, OTL, tempered the Danish legislature's refusal of Bismarck's offer by sending him a letter offering to join the German Confederation. Bismarck, after consulting with Wilhelm I, refused the offer, and the OTL 2nd Schleswig war proceeds as normal.
If you want to strum on these themes for a more complete Danish write-up, perhaps rather than rejecting the offer, Bismarck sends back the letter to Christian IX, threatening to publish the letter offering concessions, which might inflame Danish internal politics to a point where Christian IX is forced to abdicate. As a compromise, the duchies are ceded to Prussia, and Christian IX maintains his throne for a little longer, at least to finish out the war, or until Denmark moves towards an electoral monarchy.

This would be a neat opportunity for a narrative campaign. Cartographical survey could use some of the same mechanics along the lines of railroad construction that 2E and I discussed during the last campaign game.
I'm no student of French politics, but I could see this kind of grievance being aired out by a tour-de-force. Though, for the record, walking through Paris with an army is a bit of an exaggeration. Around 40,000 men comprises around 2/3 divisions, depending on your historical sources. Peacetime recruitment records from the OTL 1884 holds that the German Empire fielded 44 divisions in total. Plus, they did tender a train full of gold for temporary access.

If I recall correctly, isn't Neptunium meant to be combustible? I like the compression idea for it, but I think it would have to have a carbon content, rather than just be water. The OG lore doc says it has a purplish hue, if I remember right, it would be pretty neat to have this ghastly grey-violet mist hang over the island. Spooky, and it might encourage the development of a Danish PPE industry, if nothing else.

How many are each square meant to represent? My knowledge of this sort of chart is limited to what I read in TSatF and some Too Fat Lardies games.

>>98689869
2e here, Kaiser might have a more precise answer, the problem with these is that each types of soldiery had rather variable sizes, even inside the same army. Cavalry divisions would vary from one army to another, each south german army had their own makeup. In the North Army the corps had different attachments based on where they originated.
Regiments were usually 2~3 battallions, with a theoritical/ideal wartime strength of 1000 per battallion, so a Regiment of infantry would be 3000. But there are dozens of factors that could lower that to 1500, or grow it beyond its limit.
Also, these were not "operational" but "organizational", a regiment would more often not deploy its entire force at once, or could not move its artillery attachment at the same speed as its infantry or cavalry core (French had a 6 - 4 in field 2 in garrison or 8 - 6 in field 2 in garrison standard, I think germans did 4/5 3/4-1).
Since the most common operational size seems to be the company, the squares would be somewhere around 120 men. But, again, that's really variable historically, pionneers for example went from 250 to 340 men per company.
Also, with these coded representations, if you add a small squiggle or star or something it suddenly means a whole division or army, so we do have a lot of leeway.

Mostly I just wonder with the org charts about exactly how many Zepps Germany has on the surface and down below. They pumped them out during the Great War but compared with U-boats or other non-capital ships they weren't the most common. Especially given their tendency to drown, explode, get blown into trees while landing, or mysteriously vanish after the crew presumably asphyxiated. Normal vessels tend to avoid that in day-to-day operations.

Given that they've only had Diesels for 5 years in-setting I imagine that for airships to have already reached the familiar rigid shape that there must have been an intermediate stage without a direct OTL counterpart, presumably using a steam engine like Giffard did but with a rigid frame of some sort. An odd duck to think about right there.
>>
>>98690653
Germany had ~10 airships at the start of ww1, which is a pretty big number for an "experimental weapon"-type, and had commissioned 60+ by the end of it. Those early ones never had a lift capacity much higher than 30 men on top of their ordnance. Even if we say they really went nuts with it, they certainly wouldn't have more than one or two dozen, at most, so if the force org is truly for Regiments, then that's probably all the Zeppelins they have right there, maybe organized in 3~4 wings/squdron of 3~4.
>>
>>98689869
Principally, I'm working the organizational layout based on the Reichs-Militärgesetz of 1874. After German unification OTL, while kingdoms like Wurttemberg and Bavaria kept their own subordinate, but autonomous armies with their own structure, the violence of the Kulturkrieg we have in this setting would suggest the implementation of centralized, Prussian-style organization across the board.
This law, in addition to the decrees promulgated under the elder Moltke/Waldersee/Schlieffen are what I'm using. On paper, 2E's explanation is correct. Absent variations on deployment circumstance, the distribution of a given year's conscripts, or the need for replacement, attachment, or expansion of detachments, 1000 men/battalion is relatively accurate.
The general idea with the force organization charts was to provide thematic suggestions for force composition for the current game, and certain limitations or application of special rules when we cross the threshold into developing a divisional-level game.
>>98690433
Actually, I much preferred the divisional tokens you showed me in TTS. They were far more colorful.
>>98690653
>>98690945
I concur with this conclusion. A baker's dozen, split into squadrons of 3-4, to transport and support Luftkommando sections. Airborne infantry, even in this form, is pressing the limits of believability for me, so limiting them effectively into SOF-style brigade organization with minimal options for additional support seems appropriate.

>The general idea with the force organization charts was to provide thematic suggestions for force composition for the current game
I can perhaps find a way to have them more directly included, if we abstract things a bit, but in any case, force orgs are always a welcome sight in wargame books so I can use these as a basis and redo them with the tokens for the battaillon sized wargame. I think it makes more sense to have it set at the company level for individual units if we want to include the formation switch (lines, blocks, small blocks, etc) as well.
I haven't moved that much on that game's front, but quickly, this is more or less what I was thinking for a unit card.
Stats
> Discipline
Various uses, but mostly to move along the Morale scale or prevent dropping on it.
> Training
Various uses, but mostly attacks and setting down fortifications and stuff
> Initiative
Order in which you activate. A turn is divided in 10 initiative step, you count down from 10 to 1, and players alternate activating units within their initiative step if its the same. Various ways to boost that, in particular formations. (In this case the Mobile are fairly mediocre troops on their other stats & morale bonuses, but they have +1 Initiative in comparison to other Infantry)
Below is the Morale Scale, you start where the star is (will try to make that clearer). Actions such as testing Discipline allow you to try to move up, and get the bonus associated with the current position. Taking more than a certain number of casualties (thinking 10) forces you to take a Discipline test, if failed you go lower on the track, and are removed from the game if you go to the bottom.
Units would have "era-appropriate" loadouts, with infantry weapons have as stats their range and a rate of fire. Standard attack would be test Training once, if successful, do the dice result's in casualties to the target, if you are in a line formation test Training x nb of times, x being the rifle's rof.
>>
>>98693541
Aside from morale, what effects would the actual number of troops in a unit have in this system?
>>
>>98694930
One might think casualty counts and sustainment mechanics would relate to assigning a specific number, but I'm not sure.
Running morale checks for individual units based on % of casualties sustained against initial strength, or only permitting units of a certain size to take certain formation?>>98693541
The unit cards look neat. The impetuous/broken-shattered scale for morale is something I've seen in tabletop ancients, but never for post-medieval systems. I like it.
>>
>>98695033
>The impetuous/broken-shattered scale for morale is something I've seen in tabletop ancients, but never for post-medieval systems. I like it.
That is fitting for a game that's (roughly) 50% ancients and 50% colonials by faction.

Well, more like 60% colonials, 20% ancients, 10% medievals, 5% Great War, and 5% indescribable esoterica in terms of faction content.

You could potentially destroy a unit through mass casualties, and perhaps some weapon loadouts would have a +1/x Soldiers left in the unit to the casualties they inflict. Also, some units (skirmishers, cavalry and mechanized cav for example) would be able to "break down" into support "points" unit (small circles instead of blocks) and be put in front of another unit to show they are shielding/picketing/scouting for them, and those points would cost men in the main unit they come from.
I was thinking of another Attack resolution to add as well, I'm not sure if I want to reserve this to Charges, I was thinking it could be cool to have it be a way for one unit to represent in the abstract gaining any advantage it can over another, but
> Test Discipline on d10
> Test Training on d10
> Add the Values from the 2 previous tests you succeeded on together with your unit's weapon's RoF, then test on that final number on a d20. If you succeed, do that many casualties.
So, higher chance for a swing, rolling on d20 may turn the gambit against you if you can only reach something like 9-10.
Since the loadouts would be more or less associated with the unit's introduction in the setting, early units (like Fallen-Paris against the Exiled Atlan) and bad units would be around 1~2, but that can also be compensated by a longer range, so the Mobiles >>98693541 in my mind compensated for rather crappy stats through good Initiative and the ability to start throwing volleys 1~2 turns before other Colonials (~800m range and more?)
I don't know if we've ever discussed this, but what's the structure & nomenclature for the Atlan military, on this scale?
>>98695033
>or only permitting units of a certain size to take certain formation?
That's something I hadn't thought about, but I really like it. I need to work out those formations, that'll be a big step of the system.

Here is an idea for an apeman unit. Not sure on the number, but probably rather large, 300 soldiers.
Bad stats, low starting Morale, probably limited to very short range (~200m) weapons and melee, Frenzy being that you cause Casualties on yourself or units close by (friendly or foe) compensated by their large numbers and the fact that they buff their damage output as they panic.
Probably will end up folding after taking a few volleys most of the time.
>>
>>98695178
>Well, more like 60% colonials
Are the colonials the space marines of the setting?
>>
>>98698626
Atlan/Hyperborea are the closest in terms of aesthetics I think, I've even used Stormcast parts for all my Atlan conversions, but in terms of setting focus the Colonials are definitely the equivalent.

It makes sense though, since while coming up with an entirely new Agarthan faction would require a lot of thread buy-in coming up with a new surface faction only requires you to look at what that country was doing OTL and then twist it a little, or a lot.

It is balanced out by the fact that Agarthan factions tend to have more subfactons and alternate builds than most colonials. And we've been able to expand even single-jak units from the original charts into entire minor factions like the Olms too. Bless the Olms.

This one is incredible.
> picrel
2 more units for the Exile's horde.
I imagine an Atlan Phalanx is much smaller than its Surface counterpart, and 200 would probably be the roof for that faction's unit. Shield (dx) would be the standard rule for simply saving that many models whenever you take casualties from infantry & cav, but not Mechanized or Artillery (or anything bigger). Other Atlan units like the Immortal would also get Armour (dx) which applies to all sources. I think these would be applied after all attack rolls from the same action are done, unless special rules are involved, so if a Colonial unit attacks while in Line formation, it attacks 1+RoF, say its Training is 6 and it rolls 3,1,6,9, so remove the 9, total 10 casualties, and its Morale rule tells it to double all casualties, that goes to 20. Saves applies last, and the Reclaimer is at top morale too, so it rolls a d10, rolling a 4. The unit goes from 200 to 184, and must test Discipline or go down a Morale level (because it lost more than 10 men in a single shot).
The Deepfolks Warband would probably be a skirmisher unit, using its huge bonus to movement when its in bad morale to move out, reform, then come back. No matter what it'll never do that much damage.

Lol, its the classical one, just, smashed up by paint 3d. As for the symbol itself I didn't put too much thought into it, there was the Titking = Minotaur thing from Atlan anon long ago, and Reclaimers would be a newer corp of infantry, founded after the King's takeover, so them keeping the symbol even in exile makes some sense.
