Blender is superior if you're making your own minis or doing big edits. But for a quick fix or just jamming a couple parts together? MM is the best.

What causes bottom layer separations on just one part of the build plate? The STLs have printed successfully on this machine before with the resin currently in the vat, and the settings are the same ones that I've been using for 2 years. I've changed the FEP twice, leveled each time, and verified that the build plate is flat. Reposting from last thread because the usual helpful experts lost interest once I confused them by posting my settings and realized that Google AI's answer to this wasn't accurate. Maybe we'll get some fresh eyes this time. I've been printing with resin for a number of years now and I'm completely stumped by this.

check the FEP film if you're hearing a "sticking" sound that's most likely the issue that can be fixed by adding the silicon based WD-40 PTFE lubricant on to the film use a microfiber cloth on it to avoid scratching the film, or it could be the UV light panel if there are any markings such as fingerprints or gunk where the FEP plate sits, what kind of 3D printer are you using? I only have exp with Anycube Photon mono 4k

Usually this seems like an overworn FEP since most people tend to print in the middle and thats why only the middle is fucking up. But since you already changed the FEP then it cant be. I got no clue, but have you checked the UV light underneath? Maybe they've gone weak?

Sorry for rushed and shitty pics. Prints are scaled down to 28mm to match others I own, and I knew some of the fine details would be lost. They (mostly) look fine, except on some of these the backs are strangely glossy.

I'm not hearing the "sticking" sound but I've heard it in the past and the prints were fine. Printer is a Saturn 2. Until recently, I basically existed solely in the Elegoo ecosystem (Mars 2, Saturn 2, Saturn 3 going over 6 years or so) and consider myself fairly proficient with those products. The screen is clean as far as I can tell. Any time that the vat is removed, the screen gets cleaned with IPA and blown dry before the vat goes back on.

Did some back and forth with the seller, who said it had to have cured or it wouldn't have printed (yep). But they agreed to reprint the lot, gratis, and tighten their QC, so I I don't want to shame if they're actually making this shit right.

Since I get to keep the first batch I'm just trying to salvage as much as I can. If the stickiness is gone and I can safely prime them, then fine. The small scale works in my favor since it will help hide imperfections, or that's my hope anyway.

How do I ensure that the ball joint sponsons point perfectly forward instead of repositioned? Only sponsons I know that go well with the plastic kit they are built for.

When Im printing terrain pieces with a flat base, I want to print it flat, it really wasteful to angle and print 30 million supports. Plus I need to raise it high or have to grind the entire base anyway.

no reason not to use it if you've got it, unless you want to take advantage of the current storage prices. Just make sure that when it gets old you don't ignore the warning signs and make backups if the data is important to you. Defragging an SSD will not do anything useful because SSDs don't store data the same way as HDDs, and multi-pass deletes will drastically shorten the lifepsan of the SSD. If you want the data on an SSD to be unrecoverable, use encryption.

I currently have my STL collection on a single SSD and I am now thinking that I should maybe take my own advice and make some backups...

When I had my sonic 8k I just had to put a small heater in with it and it helped some, but the heated vat is OP, besides sometimes on the very first use of the day it will fail but every other time it always always works

I do find it unfortunate but I also think the reputation becomes self feeding where people just repeat that it is brittle and nobody bothers to take a chance and give it a test.

I have tested it lol all of my armies have been made from water washable and they've yet to explode or crack from being slightly nudged so it should be fine
Outdated reputation I think they improved the strength of water washable a while ago and people were just talking about the old formulas
I have been able to drybrush and press against blades and guns without them snapping off and exploding at all
Ignore the layer lines on these, some of the last I made on my 8k before it exploded and I optimized the settings for speed

That and people don't consider improvements or advancements in technology. They see how something was when it was first developed and assume that thing will always be that way and never improve. So with water washable resin, it may have been true at one point that it was more brittle, but formulas have improved over time and now there is literally no difference between water washable resin and "regular" resin.

But because people heard that it was more brittle years ago, they just internalized that as an eternal truth that will never change and just automatically assume water washable will always be "more brittle".

All I can speak on is my personal experience. I have a pretty humid basement (which is where I store my models) and I've never had a problem with it. And the oldest print made with water washable resin that I have down there is around two years old. So two years of exposure to air with a bunch of moisture in it and the print is fine tells me it's not an issue. Of course the prints are painted as well so maybe the paint protected the prints.

If they're beefy STLs meant for abuse, cheap resin is probably fine, especially if you undercure it a bit. The first time that I knocked a mini off the table that I'd spent three hours painting and watched it explode, I realized that I either needed the FLGS to get a padded floor, I needed to stop using minis that had spears or thin limbs, or I needed to find a better resin. Fortunately for me, better resins exist. You do you and the folks that paint display pieces can do whatever it is that they do, but it only has to happen once to make a believer out of you. I know what my time is worth. Not everyone does.

Visit forums, read documentation, ask questions, actually engage with the subject matter.
Start with autorig in blender. It's a bit of a learning curve, but you'll be reposing models in no time. There'll be times where you won't be able to just change a pose without modifying geometry and resculpting some detail, take it as a learning opportunity. It's all different skills you'll need to acquire over time, don't try to eat the world in a single bite.

Would a resin printer perform good in an old Florida garage without AC? Would the odors fuck her up when she's going to get in her car? Not at the thicknesses minis are printed at. "ABS-like" is a marketing term designed to fool people new to the hobby. Your first hint should have been that small pieces of ABS don't explode when dropped. Your second hint should have been considering what Lego bricks, golf club heads, and drain pipes would be like if they were made of Sunlu resin rather than ABS. They're in two entirely different categories in terms of performance.

The best way to minimize support scars is to minimize supports. Work on improving your ability to orient and place supports. Most of the slicers are okay at doing it automatically, but they're optimized for successful printing, not reducing damage.

As for tools? I do most of it with a sharp Xacto and a great deal of care. The Tamiya files are nice but I don't use them as often as a knife.

FDM's are great for printing:
-Flat bases of all sizes
-Big chonky pieces of terrain
-Flat pieces or plates for tanks with not much superficial detail
-Base trays with holes for magnets
-Gizmos, tokens, wound-makrer dice, battle-shock markers and other small thingies

here's some things I find wrong with your plate(s). Your capes are horizontal. Your swords are horizontal. Your horse legs(?) are horizontal. Your flat plates are horizontal.

Always print things vertical. If something is long, like an antenna, or flat, like a cape, print it vertical.

Add extra supports at the points where the islands appear. And always check your sliced file through UVTOOLS. Check for errors and fix all of them.

Have you thought that you might be underexposing the resin? My layers are at 2.75s per layer. 1.4s seems very low. Then again I run thicker layers (50um).

As far as scans go, I'd say that one looks great. It is sharper than most scans I got. I've printed sloppier too. You will be fine. I would print it directly.

Seconded, I've seen that very model printed and painted before, it's a 99% perfect copy, just losing a little sharpness in some spots, but nothing that a skilled painter cannot fix.

Also can you provide a screenshot of what the scans looked like before you printed them? Seems like the scan will be a good reference for what proper scans look like before printing so I can tell if they're quality scans or not.

I need to get my calipers on the old Cadian shock troop antennae and then get the measurements to figure out how antennae should really be shaped so they aren't easy to snap. Or just suck it up and use brass rods. I'm not sure at the moment.

Ill show you my settings, but fair warning, they aren't optimized. I found just letting it take a long time reduces failures, and with my schedule the prints usually hang out on the bed for a while anyway.

What 3D printer resin matches hard plastic in strength for wargaming anyways?
Whenever something looks like a 28mm scale hand's finger I get nervous about those parts of a model being too brittle and easy to break off.

Honestly that looks about on par to what an Anycubic Mono was printing like 6 years ago. FDM has come a long way, and that doesn't really look all that bad. IMO the tradeoff is fine if you don't want to deal with the chemicals/fumes of resin printing and/or don't have the space for it. I say this as someone who only prints on resin.

I found out that some of AnvilIndustry's STL packs include pauldrons for 28mm scale human miniatures.
I want to recreate the previous Cadian shoulderpads and hopefully the current Cadian shoulderpads using the curvature of the Anvil shoulderpads.
Is there any particular way to do so while "preserving" the curvature of the shoulderpads? Does Blender or meshmixer have tools to recreate an existing 3D model's concave/convex shapes as a blank slate to remake? If that makes sense?

I'm not sure how to measure the concave and convex aspects of a real life bit so I'm not sure how likely I'll be able to do this in real life.
English is my first language so I'm not ESL. Just sleep deprived and no coffee. Sorry if none of what I said makes sense.

I'll second Sunlu ABS-like. It's quite flexible without being bendy like soft plastic. I've dropped a bunch of minis from my desk with some force and none of them have broken, just popped off their base, the only breakage was an extremely thin skeleton arm.

Piggy backing on this question, I just saw a really good Russian caster/printer is now selling scans that look legit, but they're scans of the cleaned up individual pieces as they would be in the sprue. Part of me likes the idea of printing all those pieces and assembling like normale, but on the other hand I worry about having all that stuff fit together.

Nobody has the AW3D Cadian STLs? I thought we were still doing that old request+offering thing.
Anyway I used Fstl that is an STL viewer. I got it through on Linux, but I think it also works on Windows and MAC. I'm pretty sure Microsoft cut out the 3D viewers being included with Windows 11 so hopefully FSTL is a good enough alternative.
I think it does a better job than GIMP being an alternative to Photoshop.

Has anybody used Prusa's stuff for 3D printing?

Couldn't get some files off the high seas and those lesser known artists deserve some support, so I'll throw some spare money when I can. I ended up getting some mushroom houses and a couple of other things for terrain.
