Reposting the scorpion-men from the previous thread. I've two questions. First, are there any special precautions against paint chipping besides varnishing and magnetizing bases? These metal models chip very easily.
Second question is about priming indoors. Typically I prime on my balcony, but sometimes the coverage is worse due to wind. Is it a stupid idea to prime under a running stove ventilator? Of course I would be wearing a mask and the stove and other surfaces would be covered to prevent primer from sticking to them.

Two more steel rift mechs done. Next is to prime my 40k collage piece
>>
>>98636199
>Doesn't primer react poorly with packaging foam
it does and thats why you dont generally spray them
you will be painting them with craft paints anyways so might as well work that basecoat on with a brush because you usually have to do it few times to get all the little bare spots that appear after drying
t. eri
>>
>>98636167
Also, if you decide to use some artificial grass for terrain, is it just buying a box of plastic grass, pvc the plasticard used as a base, then plaster it? Does it look good, or is it a mess? Or do you have to do add the sand/sawdust to the plasticard, then paint it and then add the grass?

>>98636233
Ok, thanks for the warning. Does the same happen if I want to barnish it? Do I have to use a brush barnish?
>>
>>98636243
With foam, you want to apply a thicker layer of something like mod podge, which will protect the foam and allow you to spray paint on top of it.
>>
>>98636257(me)
to clarify, you put the mod podge on the bare foam, before the primer
>>
>>98636199
>So did you cut the pieces with a knife, then covered in pva and sand/sawdust, then primed and painted? Doesn't primer react poorly with packaging foam?
yes and yes
i didn't use a spraycan for this, or any primer, just a basecoat of black or whatever, but if your coat of pva is good you won't have problems

>>98636233
>craft paints
this

it can be messy, more so if you sand the foam to shape it, it will cling to everything, xps is less messy and more durable

as it happens i went to the plywood store this morning and got myself a sheet of basing board and it costed me whole 4 euros
i dont remember what this is called but basically its the stuff thats used in the back of pictures you hang on your walls and ive always used it, sometimes even for mini bases

you dont necessarily need to varnish the thing because diluted pva keeps the material in place but static grass might start to flake off sometimes in the future depending how hard you are on your terrain so might as well give it a light spray
and as anon already said you can spray the foam if its coated with something but guaranteed you wont get all the spots with just spraying

good luck anon

always basecoat before gluing the grass, that way you have a background color, the grass is never going to cover 100%, if you plan to paint on top of the grass for whatever reason you can skip that step
always do a sealing coat of more diluted pva at the end to improve durability, you can even spray it with one of those sprayer bottles for window cleaners (rinse it afterwards)

be carefull with cardboard bases and thin plasticard ones, the coat of pva will shrink and may warp them if its too weak/thin

highly recomend to watch some tutorials from the before times if you are coming in fresh, geekgamingscenics on youtube is a good one, he has very diy videos, even on how to make your own grass with sawdust (>>98636167 the grass here is dyed sawdust, i made a lot and still use that same batch today), usually you can get free sawdust at you local hardware shop, just have to sieve it

Any way I can make this sub assembly work on Zondara here? I'd like to keep the whole head bit separate from the body and then force it into place after the body is already glued together so there's no seams. I've already sawed the head bit from the connecting ring that goes inside the body, but I'm having trouble working out a way that I'll be able to get the head/upper chest to sit in there properly. I definitely can't make it work with the face attached so I think that'll have to be glued on after everything is painted. I really wish GW would make these things with the idea that most will keep the head separate until the end.
>>
>>98636406
If the piece with the head is already in twain, why not just snip it down so it can fit in the hole and then pin it?
>>
>>98636406
you could also just attach the head and subassemble the face on it's own
>>
>>98636266
I find the pva and paper towel method overtop the foam gives a good texture, it also allows you to spray if you want, I still exclusively use brush for everything all the time though.

Ok, for clarification of what I wanted to make, I want to try to make a table scenery with megalithic stuff. A couple of menhirs, one-two dolmens of different configuration (if I want to stick the two pieces of foam together, is it good to do it with toothpicks and pvc glue, or it won't be enough to get them together?), and then three-four pieces that can form a circular cromlech. Also a barrow, which serves as a hill (plus it being the thing that made me want to do this). I imagine the barrow is just finding one of those spherical foam balls, then cut it in half to then do the rest.

If I manage to get a grip on this, maybe I paint a diorama of chalcolithic people trying to move a menhir (since the only really difficult part should be finding the model of the people pulling the ropes to 3d print). The rest would be some some sticks and small ropes tied to the menhir.
>>
>>98636549
>if I want to stick the two pieces of foam together, is it good to do it with toothpicks and pvc glue, or it won't be enough to get them together?
yes
pva (white wood glue) and pvc glue are not the same thing tho

>I imagine the barrow is just finding one of those spherical foam balls, then cut it in half to then do the rest.
stack several layers of foam and cut to shape, no need for a ready made ball
>>
>>98636549
sure you can use toothpicks to hold the shape just make sure they are really sharp on both ends
im aware xps foam is expensive and not readily available everywhere so if you ever see any construction sites just shout to some dude there to dig some pieces from the trash for you and give him some smokes or pocket change for a cup of coffee
they usually have plenty of pieces there
>>
>>98636601
>>98636588
By the way, any safety precaution I should take with foam? I imagine a regular medical mask (I still have a ton from the covid days) and something for the eyes should be enough, but you never know.
>>
>>98636640
well it was already mentioned that if you decide to sand the stuff it makes a really big mess and sticks to everything via static electrizity and i mean into everything
preferrably sand without any breeze around if you can and have vacuum cleaner at hand and dont breathe it in

good god how many times do we need to have this discussion? if you don't want your paint to chip you need good surface prep and good primer. completely degrease your models before painting them and lightly scuff the surface with sandpaper or scotchbrite. use a good primer, like an automotive one. don't touch your paint with your bare hands until the final clear coat is done.

But if you need an exact version with the frayed ends like that you'd probably want to do something like grabbing some thin copper wire, cutting a bunch, twisting it to create that arching pattern on each and glueing it to the hat ends

If you sculpt or 3d print it like that unless the hat is big it's gonna break off the second you look at it.

anon would be better off getting some jute/twine and unravelling it and using that, thinner and flexible so it doesn't break when it gets touched.

I've never had great experiences with hardware store spray paints, and I'm learning that may very well be because of canadian restrictions on spray paint contents, basically resulting in canadian spray paints not being able to atomize the paint as well as they should. For small companies like tamiya for example this just means you can't get their primer rattle cans anymore and tamiya justifiably isn't interested in making a canada-compliant version for something that probably only sells a few thousand cans a year.

But the insidious part is that you can look up reviews of spray paints that should be fine, but if you aren't aware of this you are buying a totally different product that has different accelerates and solvents, effectively resulting in them being maybe more environmentally friendly, but worse spray paints. Leaving you to just think you either did something wrong, or the weather was bad, when in reality the paints are just bad. Rustoleum and krylon being the worst examples that I've come across at least.

Anyway, the point is, are there any primers sold in canada that are still actually any good? I only prime once in a while in batches, so I don't mind doing lacquer in my airbrush outside, but even the niche gunpla shops don't seem to have basically any bottle primers even in stock anymore let alone the cans.

Sontje last thread showed some cool cellshaded stuff, which made me look it up some more. Surely there is no reason to not give it the flattest least reflective coating possible.

What's the point in building up a part of a model with like 6+ different colors when the end result you can't even see 4 of them? Every "tutorial" I watch on youtube from these so-called painters who win shit like golden demon and whatnot do this and I cannot understand why. Acryllic paint is transparant - to a fault, but only if you deliberately use it that way and most of these people just ride roughshod over the previous color. So why do they add all these unnecessary steps?
>>
>>98642746
Just show us the specific thing you're alluding to, no need for the vagueposting
>>
>>98642746
Take two minis. Prime one in black, and another in white. Paint over them with the same color, you'll see the difference.

Good scale model painting (or minipainting, for that matter) is all about subtle layering.
>>
>>98642746
What the fuck are you even talking about?
Layering?
Wet blending?
This shit is essential.

Primer, undercoats?
These decide the end color of what goes under, and undercoats are these to work as the base and shadows and then you paint from darkest to lightest creating the illusion of shadows and light.

Just overall colors in the model?
Nonsensical because if you're talking about x number of colors being unnecessary then you have SEEN that x number of colors, making it necessary.
>>
>>98642759
they will look exactly the same if you use a base coat consistency, which is pretty much opaque. The only reason to do one or the other is how many coats you need for coverage - the end result will be the same, unless you're doing something like contrast paints.
>>
>>98642746
there isn't much to any point, St. Duncan says it himself, you can be messy and splotchy, it all gets cleaned up in the final layer/highlight/shade step.

If it isn't matte it doesn't work and you might as well do a different technique. I believe you see the technique more often with gunpl bros (presumably because of anime). Personally I think it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing looks to go for, especially for table topping. It pops and is distinct, it is quite unique and it is very readable at a distance, which is my main gripe with tutoriol bros on YouTube with all their intricate shading and blending and tiny details. Sure it takes skill and looks good, but I am not in the habbit of picking up minis to look at them up close, especially not my opponents minis (not to say ALL blending and shading is pointless).

I enjoy painting. I do not enjoy table topping with anyone other than close friends/family who are only into historicals. I have completed French, Austrian, Russian, Prussian, German, US etc armies for everything from the greatwars to ww2. I have no reason to paint more of that.
How easy do painted armies sell? I'd like to just pick up e.g. tyranids and paint them in a certain scheme/style, but as I would never play with them they'd sit on my shelf for a while looking neat, then collect dust and disappear into a box never to see the light of day again. I'd rather sell it so it sees use. I'm by no means a great painter, nor would I be expecting to sell with high expectations regarding profits (hell, it wouldn't even have to break even).
>>
>>98643401
I dont want to pay the high price of a well painted army, anything else i expect to get well below MSRP because youve already glued it.
>>
>>98643401
I'd pay about the box value for it. Thing is, I have never seen one that looked half way decent go for that, it is basically always well above the value of buying the plastic and even if I were to account for paint and materials, most of what I see goes.well over that too, so most people are seemingly doing it for profit. The ones I see that go for cheap are the pick'n'mix variety bags of shit that needs to be stripped.and cleaned and even then will be a collection of raggedy Ann and Andy's that a proper army in and of itself do not make.
>>
>>98643395
Yea I think i'll make that spot more urban with a church or something like that. But I dont know yet
>>
>>98643432
Wouldn't want anywhere near that. Hell, if I thought an anon here would actually use it, I wouldn't expect much more than the shipping to be covered (and some action pics of the army on the table would be nice I guess). I wouldn't do anything on request though, I'd simply offer it up if/once done as a take it or leave it kind of thing. I like painting because there's no pressure, the moment someone is breathing down my neck with deadline expectations is the moment I stop enjoying it.

>>98643474
Well that's why I'm asking here, I'm clueless on this topic. Like I said, my stuff is decent, not award winning, not the debris mishmash you describe either.

For table ready it would kind of depend. For the big 40k full game 2k point armies I kinda like doing it myself, if I bought that it wouldn't feel like "my" army. This is a large part of the appeal, every model is MY model. Now for kill teams I'd pay, as I wouldn't mind having more variety in that and while I like to main an army for 2k pt games, for killteam I wouldn't mind just picking any random available team (if it were available to me obviously)

From across the battle-scarred no-man's land on Armageddon, da Ork Warboss could see the Imperial trenches.

A Blood Angel Space Marine sticks his head up from the trench and shouts, "One Blood Angel is more than a match for ten of your Orks!"
Then he ducks his head down.

Da Warboss jabs one of his Nobz.
"'Ere now, go and show dat zoggin git what we iz made uv!"
So ten Orks cross no-man's land and leap into the enemy trench.
There are explosions, battle-cries, bursts of flames, and gunfire.

When the dust settles, a lone Blood Angel sticks his head up from the trench, and shouts, "One Blood Angel is more than a match for 50 of your Orks!"

So Da Warboss jabs a diff'rnt one of his Nobz.
"Oi! I wuzzn't kiddin'! Give doze beekeez a taste of da boot levva!"
So 50 Orks cross no-man's land and leap into the enemy trench.
There are lots more explosions, shouting, gunfire, chainswords, and flying debris.

When the dust settles, a lone Blood Angel sticks his head up from the trench, and shouts, "One Blood Angel is more than a match for 100 of your Orks!"

Da Warboss grabs his right-hand nob in both fists.
"Look 'ere! You teech deez gitz a lessin, or itz gizzard stew fer tea!"
So 100 Orks cross no-man's land and leap into the enemy trench.
A massive swirl of destruction ensues! Shouts, explosions, gunfire, stray bullets ricocheting, and all-out war!

When the dust settles, a single Ork boy comes limping back across no-man's land, carrying his own severed arm...
"Boss! It'z a trick! Dere iz two of 'em!"

Any tips for using Quick gen / Speedpaint / Contrastpaint
>>
>>98646898
Slop it on thicker than you think you should. It needs time and volume to smooth out and settle the way it's supposed to. There's no trick though, just make sure the whole surface is wet, and then wick away any parts with too much in any weird spots.
Also don't expect great results. It can be a useful way to get lots of tabletop models quickly enough, or as a starting point, but it's never going to look THAT good without further work. I give credit to speedpaint for their box art genuinely looking kind of bad, but at least representative of the actual result unlike GW.
>>
>>98646898
Slam dunk it into the garbage can.
>>
>>98646898
Pay attention to what you are buying. No, seriously. If you have to ask someone who knows, ask. Let me give you an example:

Citadel makes both "Baal Red" and "Blood Angels Red" Contrast Paint. Sounds like they're meant for the same thing, don't they - red Blood Angels? It makes so much sense!

They are completely different kinds of contrast paint that are (obviously, just from looking) different colours, and you use them in different ways.

Over a white undercoat, Blood Angels Red acts like a "traditional" Contrast Paint. The darker parts of the mixture settle into the recesses of your model while pulling pigment away from the raised surfaces... if you do it right. This is a fast way to paint an army, but unless you take extra steps, there's no way it will look as nice as base/layer/shade methods.

OTOH, Baal Red is one of Citadel's newer style of Contrast Paint, and does not work like this at all. Over a white undercoat, it simply produces a brilliant red at all points on the model, full stop. If that's what you want for, say, a bright Second Edition Blood Angels red base coat, that'll do, but it does not share the "quick army dip" properties of Citadel's earlier Contrast Paints.
>>
>>98646845
in absolute terms? no, but if can buy in other hobby shops and get like 5€ for shipping for a bigger package, a 70% more for just 4 models it's a lot yeah

I like that it kinda shows the areas that want to be highlighted. They end up lighter already, but I'll paint over it again and highlight with normal paint.
So for a good result it's not quick at all and probably not recommended - though I still like it. Also have to tidy up mistakes before you can do the next basecoat, going back to the primer color
The black contrast paint is really good. I don't use any other black anymore
Not used the other brands
>>
>>98649362
You should really work on values. The shadows aren't dark enough and the highlight aren't light enough. You've spent a lot of time sculpting boobs and ass and I think it's a shame to end up with such a flat paint job.

still think yours and btanon are the best marines on board; yours are probably my favourite, raptors are such a cool chapter and I like the tacticool stuff you add to them.

The contrast is right where I want it anon, thanks for trying to help though.

I don't doubt it. Almost everyone make that mistake at first. Look at their hairs, it looks like playdough.

Thanks, anon; you are too kind. I enjoy vehicles, figures not so much. BTanon's are definitely the best ones here. Hell, his are probably my favorite marines in general and I don't even like Black Templars that much.
Agreed about Raptors, easily the coolest chapter. I have three more to paint, there will be a lot of tacticool stuff.

Hi guys, does anybody have a repository of the various Grimdark Compendium videos? I remember seeing it posted here a while ago.
>>
>>98650644
You'd have to ask what it is that they would do for you that a more miniature-focused product wouldn't do for you? Some uses are less appropriate because art-focused products are often designed with mediums that don't dry or adhere as well because a typical canvas has a larger, porous surface area than a non-porous plastic model, and won't be touched or manhandled after application, which is also why you see some scale model tutorials (there's a thread on /toy/) suggest products or techniques that aren't popular with wargaming miniatures.

Depending what it is that you think pastels could be good for, you might instead look into dry pigments, oil paints, paint markers/pens, coloured pencils, or even just drybrushing acrylics with a softer, rounder brush/makeup brush.
>>
>>98650723
Isn't it just weathering pigment?
>>98650775
>Depending what it is that you think pastels could be good for, you might instead look into dry pigments, oil paints, paint markers/pens, coloured pencils, or even just drybrushing acrylics with a softer, rounder brush/makeup brush.
Well, it's way cheaper than hobby brand dry pigments
>>
>>98650712
No idea, but it doesn't really matter, just find equivalents.
>>
>>98650849
Equivalents to what, anon ? Why am I asking ?
>>
>>98650868
To black and pale pink.
>>
>>98650873
Black is fine, but the pale pink looks cool, almost white. I could do a mix, but I'd prefer to have a specific color for reference
>>
>>98650882
I think it might be a blend. White base with a pink wash or glaze.
>>
>>98650882
the pink looks like it was built up to a white colour, glazing thin layers of white and light pink on top of the light pink base colour, it's not just flatly-applied light pink. GW's lightest pink seems to be Fulgrim Pink which would match the base colour but you'd build it up with light layers
alternatively you could apply a pink wash/contrast thinned down on top of a white/bone colour, but that's messy and doesn't look like that picture and wouldn't be great on relatively flat surfaces
>>
>>98650898
>>98650908
>Glazing
Oh fuck, I'll try to think of something simpler for the head then. Thanks anons
>>
>>98650929
glazing is easy if you're willing to learn, though I'd start with a lighter basecoat of pinkish white, then glaze in the pink shadows, rather than glazing the highlights
>>
>>98650933
Yeah I'll probably do that, or even simple pink shadows. I do glazing for skins and shit, but I don't want to do it on those models, I want to keep it relatively simple and fast
>>
>>98650947
If it's simple and fast you want, I'd just start with a light pink (fulgrim pink is one option), then do a voluemetric highlight of light pink + white, and then finish with a pinwash of your favourite pink wash or contrast paint. Then once you paint the lenses and other details, do a black or grey pin wash around those areas to define them.
>>
>>98650953(me)
The volumetric can be an airbrush zenithal if you so wish
>>

I had a tedious town hall meeting at work with jeets babbling in LinkedInese about the end of our current project. There was also the obligatory back-clapping and words of encouragement to all concerned. Many of whom don't know if they'll have a job in six months. I didn't get a raise this year despite exceeding expectations, so the words of praise ring hollow. I've also seen too many negroes milling about in the polish town I work in.

>>98651734

And it wasn't that you were using gold on it, it's that you concentrated it all on one area with no contrast to it, the rubber of the wheels should not be gold (yes yes even if they aren't meant to be rubber now) and the hubs themselves should not have been completely gold, and even then if you partially gilt the hubs you should also have had gold trim/decor elsewhere on the miniature as well.

Yea I get what you mean. Definitely was just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck and it just didn't work out. The feedback gave me pause to reconsider the gold altogether and get back to the scheme I was aiming for, so thanks for that! Red, green and gold together was getting a bit too Christmassy...

Glad to be done with it, I really prefer painting smaller things.. However now the rhinos and other larger models don't seem as daunting.

the one thing thats been bugging me this whole time, this appeared to be 32mm scale when you posted it beside other minis, but I have seen that hothweels before and it is a standard sized hotwheels.... which is much smaller than this unit would be in 32mm, so where the fuck did you get a huge hotwheels car?
