Thankfully no pinning was needed to glue the legs to the torsos. Some legs did snap unfortunately while repositioning them, hence the joint protectors on one scorpion. I'll prime them tomorrow.

What are your best practices for keeping plastic glue nozzles open? They keep getting stuck and I typically just burn the open with matches. Do you have another way of solving the issue, or do you just have a bunch of spare nozzles lying around?

Cardboard castle update:
Texturing done.
Made some progress with the painting.
Note: The teeth of the 2 skulls are barely visible after texturing ....
Note 1: Bought some "Payne's Grey" thinking it was a very dark grey, it ended up being actually a dark blue lol, the walls are much darker than I had initially envisioned now.
Note 2: On the back of one of the walls, I applied a bit of thinned-down black between the stones to try and make them stand out more, but I feel like the black stands out too much...

Has anybody here tried the Vallejo True Metallic Metal paints? Like the Obsidian Black ones? They look very "shiny", for lack of a better word, in photos and videos compared to regular metallic paints.
Any of you anons tried them out?
>>
>>98617439
Yeah, easy recommend. If Vallejo is doing one thing right, it's their metallics.
>>
>>98617439
TMM have been great so far. I haven't used Obsidian black yet, that sold out day 1 at my LGS.
>>
>>98617452
How would you compare them to Citadel metallics?
I really like the shade of Sterling Silver base too. It has a bit of colour to it in photos and video. I like that slight colour shift, but I've never seen it in person.
>>
>>98617488
>How would you compare them to Citadel metallics?
I don't have that many of Citadel metallics (Leadbelcher, Iron Hands, Brass Scorpion, and Canoptek Alloy), but Vallejo is definitely a visibly finer pigment, and the colors are more vivid. I can make you a comparison, if you want.

I use the TMM range with old Vallejo Metal Color greats (Duraluminium, my love) and they are just as good imo.
>>
>>98617519
Also, they flow better from the bottle. Citadel metallics are thicc as fuck.
>>
>>98617522
The "air" versions of TMM are even thinner if that's what you're looking for. You can still use a brush with them.
>>
>>98617519
Nah it's ok, you don't need to make a comparison. I'm just curious if they actually look more kinda "shiny" in person like they seem to do in photos/videos. Also compared to Vallejo's normal stuff like the plain basic Model Colour Silver 70.997
>>
>>98617547
They can definitely go a lot brighter with their metallic sheen, if that's what you are asking. I have the Sterling Silver trio, the base color is imo a tiny, tiny touch bit colder than Game Color Silver (72.052) but otherwise very similar. The highlight color is a lot brighter, basically metallic white. It looks quite nice.

$100 for 45 pre assembled minis seems like a pretty good deal for someone that just wants to practice painting. Really sucks that its not out December 2027 puts a big damper on the deal
>>
>>98617627
>good deal for some who wants to practice
No. Not really. Buying cheap reaper minis would be better and not overwhelming by having 45 minatures to paint in a single shot.
>>
>>98617627
You can get second hand 3D printer under $100 no problem and then you can print hundreds of minis for nearly free.
>>
>>98617638
>for nearly free
Not really, both alcohol and resin actually cost quite a bit. It will be cheaper in the long run, but let's not pretend that the printer is the only cost to 3D printing.
>>
>>98617728
>both alcohol and resin actually cost quite a bit
They are not free, yeah, but "cost quite a bit" is overselling it hard. A bottle of good resin is like what, $30, and it will last you a LONG time, hundreds and hundreds of minis/models. IPA is cheap as fuck, doubly so if you can get it straight from the factory, and even when having the dual washing setup, you need like 15 liters at most. And it can go for a long time, too.
>>
>>98617233

>>98617748
>and it will last you a LONG time, hundreds and hundreds of minis/models.
Nah, one liter will be less than a hundred models, and that's not counting the amount that will be wasted on test prints and misprints.
>IPA is cheap as fuck
At least here it isn't, it's like 15 euros per liter. So your 15 liters would be over 200 hundred euros, though I will grant you don't need that much and it will last longer than your resin.
>>
>>98617627
It's just the nature of kickstarters. I waited years to get the reaper bones kickstarter fulfilled, only to realize when it arrived that at the pace I paint miniatures it would take the rest of my life to paint them all.

so naturally I bought even more miniatures, dozens of kits from a bunch of manufacturers, and a three 3d printers.
>>
>>98617769
>At least here it isn't, it's like 15 euros per liter
wtf, it's 5L for $16 here. Less, if you actually take your time and contact the factory directly.
>Nah, one liter will be less than a hundred models
Funnily enough, I remember making a wager about this with a friend of mine. Ended up printing exactly 102 Empire Greatswords with 1kg of resin. Granted, that was under optimal settings, no fails, and I REALLY pushed it. But yeah, it's not hundreds, you are right. Still, the value is obvious.

>>98617794
>so naturally I bought even more miniatures, dozens of kits from a bunch of manufacturers, and a three 3d printers.
Based. One day, when the internet and electricity goes out, I will be able to keep building and painting for the rest of my life anyway.
>>
Practice painting on any miniature, you can just paint over or strip them as many times as you want. Buying cheap shit is a waste of money.
>>
>>98617769
Depending on how and where you buy isopropyl, there can be a lot of markup. Most people are not buying industrial quantities of 99%, but single bottles of pre-diluted 70% IPA for first-aid use.

>>98617841
>I will be able to keep building and painting for the rest of my life anyway
That's the idea. I have an incredible amount of respect for the people who can kitbash and scratch build from anything, but I do not posses the ability to look at obsolete electronics and imagine the dozens of things it could be remade into, or the patience to work wonders with just cardboard and a hot glue gun, so I have loads and loads of kits instead.

Does anyone use a particular primer or other solution to hide layer lines on fdm terrain?

>>
>>98617142
I figured out priming with my airbrush on 3D printed models.
Problem is I may have used too much thinner or water or flow improver and there's bubble marks on corners of basecoating the model with a grey paint.
Don't have my phone with me right now, but generally what's the best ratio of thinner and flow improver to acrylic paint if one is in doubt?

1 drop of thinner and 2 drops of flow improver? Can anyone confirm this? It is late right now.

Terrain and basing related. The local dollar store sells modgepodge. Is it good for being used for locking down basing flock after the PVA glues it down before painting? Or is PVA watered down good enough for this?

I am thinking of making milliput "hills" and supergluing round sprue bits drilled to be "broken pipes" and rectangle sprue bits to be "bricks." Then after the superglue dries I cover the milliput part in PVA and dunk it in a tub of sand or sprinkle sand over it and that will act as piles of destroyed building rubble if that makes sense.
>>
>>98619214
automotive filler primer, the high grade, avoid the '2k' or two component ones
you can also use glazing putty like bondo, but depending on the detail it can be a pain, you can thin milliput with alhohol too and brush it on but it's kind of messy
if abs/asa you can try acetone vapor smoothing
there's also purpose-made brush on self leveling resins like XTC-3D
>>
>>98619673
I do 1:4:5 flow improver:thinner:paint
>>
>>98618752
Looking nice, hope you're having fun with it
>>
>>98619778
I can confirm it
Pretty sure modgepodge is pva glue mate, for flock just go to a hardware store and buy a big thing of pva glue and brush it on without diluting it, that will be enough
not quite sure what the hill bit is, but yeah that will work as terrain, but a flat board with removable terrain is better

it's 50% paint

1 part flow improver
4 parts thinner
5 parts paint
>>
>>98619673
>but generally what's the best ratio of thinner and flow improver to acrylic paint
Depends on the primers, but Vallejo is generally like 1 paint : 3 Vince's mix (8/2 Thinner/flow improver).
Or you can get something like VMS, which moggs the fuck out of Vallejo (or any other acrylic primer, if you ask me), and it flows perfectly straight out of the bottle.
>>

From your own experience, what's the most optimal solution to painting minis that have elements of their bases as integral part of their models? I have now few fantasy minis that have "tactical ruins" they stand on, normally I would paint minis and bases separately but now I either glue them to bases and ensure they will fit to each other or leave them separate, making painting easier but with clear difference between the two after gluying.

More control over layer thickness, more control over how much you spray at once which also translates into much less material wasted (single can runs out after 20-30 minis, single 60ml bottle of primer might last for years). Quality of airbrush primers compared to spraycan ones is debatable but also important.

NTA but just generally the quality of shit you see shared on forums, the quality of tutorials and how easy some of them are to follow, and the popularisation of easy painting techniques has made painting standards way higher than they were 10 years ago

It's the same with tons of online games as well, noobs in hobbies/games in the early 2000's were completely clueless compared to noobs today who can learn all about preshading, oil washes, & other shit in 30 second videos on their commute to work

Could be. How hot/wet/rainy/humid is it where you live, anon?

Here in south-central Burgerland, we had 39 days this summer where the high temperature exceeded 100° F. Even when you get up before dawn and have all your rattlecan stuff ready to go at first light, you're still taking a big chance on fuzzy primer.

Quality of the paint itself aside, you can exercise more precise control over your indoor weather conditions with an airbrush-and-vent-a-hood setup.

>A collection of magic tricks
The average painter isn't any better they just have access to more magic tricks. Give these people the same tools painters from the early 2000s had and lets see how they do.
>>
>>98622714
all the same tools were present then lol they just weren't popularized in miniature painting

just because you were a retarded kid painting babby's first models with a dollar store brush and paint straight out of the pot doesn't mean there weren't actual artist tools you could have bought at the time
>>
>>98622145
>go to the LGS's in your city and you'll see that for every hundred painters maybe 5-10 are actually decent to good and the rest of the hobby is composed of grey tide, contrast slop or literal housepaint dipping.
Then there is gonna be lads like me that just basecoat and try to (and fail) to keep some coats thin like me when I paint light skin tones.
And then a diluted wash to shade the model but hopefully not tint it down too much.
I plan to really try with vehicles though.

AC is useless when you have only few days tops or 1-2 weeks above 30C during whole year. Italy or Spain have AC in most homes/apartments for obvious reasons, rest of the Europe can handle without them without issue.

I finished this dude when the last thread was up, but I hadn't varnished him. Tried warming the varnish in some warm water for about 8 minutes beforehand and shook it for about 5 minutes after that, and shocker, the coat came out much nicer than the previous minis. What are the "black and brown washes" of weathering pigment powders?

This seems like it would rely heavily on no natural shadows ruining the effect, i.e. bright even light from all angles. Also, having to edge highlight pretty much every single angle...the horror.
Wonder how well this works/looks on a table, looks sick though.
>>
>>98624103
I slopped on green and white in splotches on a primed base. PVA/Lemer glue over everything (just barely thick enough that you get that blueishwhite hue). Then before the glue dries black over the top (sprayed on, I simply used my black primer rattlecan).

I my opinion all the crackle effect paints are a gross waste of money for this effect (bottom showing through) and should be saved if you want that curling flaky effect of the TOP layer (e.g. dried cracked riverbed mud)
>>
>>98625346
Something I've wondered, but never really bothered to think THAT hard about, is if you could paint something sort of like inverse volumetrics to cancel out the shadows under average lighting conditions to make a model appear as close to flat as possible. It probably wouldn't matter for posed photos because you can just create even lighting, but idk, it could look neat sometimes, or be useful for certain effects I would imagine.

>>

>>98620068
I've tried automotive filler primer and unfortunately it just doesn't do the trick. It's designed for scratches and isn't up to the task of filling layer lines.

I should try that milliput idea, though. I've brushed on 25 minute epoxy before, but it's also a mess (and a race).
>>
>>98624640
>Should I varnish after chipping before using oils/enamel washes or pro acryl newsh if that stuff actually works?
It's generally a good practice, yes.
Also, if you are using water-based acrylics as your base layer (the one that will show when chipped) you might want to varnish before applying the chipping fluid. Chipping fluids/medium/hairspray are made with base layer being lacquer in mind, and they can lift/reactivate everything water-based.
Test it out on something beforehand.

>it just doesn't do the trick
it won't fully fill a .2 layer height print, but coupled with some sanding and several coats you can get very close, if you print at .1 you can get very close with a few coats and no sanding in most surfaces, top down stepping on shallow angles is always going to need some active filling and sanding

some random epoxy is not the same as a purpose made one, thixotropy is a thing, but yes you have a limited time to apply it, it's intented to be slathered all over so that shoudln't be an issue. I've used it, it works just fine but it's a compromise

neither of these are good solutions tho, you are fighthing layer lines by rounding and obscuring detail, fdm is just not suited for the task if you can't tolerate layer lines

if that's the case, i would advice to use 3dprinting for the structure, tooling and templating, but craft details by hand with other materials so the layers are covered, depending on why you are 3dprinting terrain that might defeat the purpose tho

4 years, yes, 2 years ago the generators were finalky doing fingers/jewellry decently.
But I don't doubt that the figurine is real, just the "oaint" isn't.
It seems to be done similar to how the nappiest mermaid was bleached, except that was worse because A) it was a cam version and B) most models were/are too politically correct to do tgat project.
This could easily have been done with a good PAID model at the time. Hell it was around then i used FREE models to generate realistic backdrops for photos of some of my minis.

That's just what people say about literally every volumetric approach to painting models
>>
>>98623780
This looks amazing and actually sticks to cell shading, helps that the character is (and designed as) an anime character. Often when I see some "cell shade" tutorial they end up using so many colours to transition into the shaded areas, they might as well be blending, and another mistake I see often is no clear delineation between the cells, which just undermines the entire effect.

It certainly seems lovely, but why did you focus the camera on the unpainted tail instead of the headdress?
>>
>>98621768
It depends. Where the bottom of the mini is not accessible I don't glue it until painted. But where it is I glue it and just paint it as normal, accepting I will get paint on the ruin. Then when it is finished I carefully basecoat and paint the ruin, and just use more coats where the paint shows through. Otherwise it is a lot of hassle doing separate stages just for a base. Perfect is the enemy of done.

You really cannot tell what the zoomed up showing airbrush errors are? I'm being serious and not malicious because I know my camera is poor and I had to use the zoom in function.
I'm just wondering how to spray where it won't leave bubbles if that hopefully helps. Did I spray too thin or too thick? How did you guys figure out how to get it right for your models when trying to airbrush acrylic paint to basecoat models?

That's kinda true, altho admittedly I haven't kept up with the latest GW sculpts
But I think their detailing is always a lot more deliberate, they don't do unnecessary shit where it shouldn't be "just because it could look cool"; the horseman sculpt in particular was likely a mesh for something else that got converted into a 3d print, and that made it a real pain

if it's spitting or chunky your paint is too thick or might need straining. if it's spiderwebbing then it's too thin or you have to dial the pattern down and go slower.

I feel like your force would benefit a lot from just some rudimentary edge highlightso ns tuff facing up. You've mentioned you highlight and it doesn't come across in pictures but everything on the models genuinely looks pretty flat so your highlights have to be extremely subtle and non noticeable . Its a nice force and you're painting cleanly just that one thing really detracts from them imo

Honestly the whole paintjob here is a lot of mess.
Too much black, not enough red, too chalky, doing the wheels solid gold is really out of place, the green hoses make it look almost like you're going for christmas.
I could go on, but bottom line the modelling project had potential but you did not have the brushwork to back it up.

Do you guys glue the model to the base first then prime and paint? Getting back into the hobby and I find myself really enjoying basing but it feels easier to paint the model when it's already on a base

I'm trying to make this scheme really really easy. The dozer blade is a printed decal and the verdigris is just a teal wash over some brass and then I patted the top down with a paper towel. I took a lot of short cuts since I have around 10 vehicles to paint. I'm rapidly rotating projects to avoid burn out. Working on more trees next.

rust, battery acid, etc dripping from the pipes
it's realistic to have the pipes just get painted in the same colour as the wall but it tends to LOOK better if it's distinguished even by just being a different shade, albeit it's a lot of work
checkers never made any warhammer miniature look worse
more weathering in general so it doesn't look like it was built and painted in this form instead of being built, painted, and then destroyed ie the inside of the broken open wall is not likely to have been painted
>>
>>98631571
>>98631597
technical skill here for sure, but the thing about painting up your tank to look like a weather-beaten piece of shit rustbox, is that when you look at it on the table.... it looks like a piece of shit. You have to get close up and scrutinize to see the difference between this and something that was dipped and then heavily handled without varnish for a few years.
>>
>>98632010
Considering the sheer number of pipes I'm afraid that it'll become far too noisy and overwhelm the minis on the table if I pick them all out in metal, but I suppose an extra layer of shade to darken them down could make them more distinct without having that issue.

Speaking of Rhinox Hide, a couple of threads back, there was a question about a non-GW replacement. Back then, I recommended AK AFV S.C.C. No.1A Very Dark Brown as the closest one-bottle solution. I still think so, but I've searched more through my browns collection.

If you don't want to mix and simply buy one bottle and be done with it, I still think the Very Dark Brown is a good solution, since it's very close to Rhinox - only tiny touch lighter and warmer. Alternatively, you can also get AP Banshee Brown, which is also very close, but also a bit warmer. However, I have also managed to mix pretty much perfect Rhinox by doing 3 parts of AK AFV Very Dark Brown with 2 parts German Camo Black Brown (70.822). Picrel. Hope it helps someone.

yes, the swords and claws were a paricularly challenging prints and they are desperately wanting for time with a rotary tool, filler primer, then a second appointment with the rotary tool. Maybe even coating the swords in thinned glues for strength.

bro... just don't. Get resin. FDM is not there yet, as much as people delude themselves it is.
>>
>>98635178
would it work better if the swords were printed so the layer lines were parallel with the long axis?
>>
>>98635179
I don't have the space or patience to print resin safely anymore. I've thought for a while about cleaning my printer and trying to run it outside, but the one time I tried it was a complete failure. Possibly old resin, or maybe it wasn't on a level surface... not really sure and I didn't want to deal with it, so the printer has been sitting in a storage bin for multiple years at this point with failed prints and resin still in the vat. Honestly if I knew anyone IRL who wanted it, I'd just give the printer in it's current condition to them for free and let them deal with it, if it still works at all.

but moreover it just gets so damn tiring to constantly be told that I'm doing every aspect of the hobby wrong. It was the same when I tried painting Gunpla kits too.

>>98635252
They are so thin that there is no way they can ever print that well. Even with resin, the parts would come out extremely delicate. I don't know why they are that thin in the sculpts. The original plastic swords from the kit are chunkier than that.

>had some unpainted resin printed tyranid warriors in the backlog that were going to be a KT21 kill team
>then KT24 happened
>and every single model has broken both ankles and will need gap filling and sanding to hide the join
