Venerable Dreadnought is not last chance to buy. Heck it's not even online only.

Not a one. My Iron Warriors regularly bring all my Heresy era dread and the decimator engine along since the only hobby scene here is a friends basement we built tables for a nobody cares about play legends units.
One of my ork kans is also a looted boxnaught.

I’ll buy boxnaughts out of spite to run as Hellbrutes since that kit is objectively ass.

Its this. GW has a policy of not sending anything to Legends as long as they are still selling it, and the GK Combat Patrol is still on sale. Until they make a new Combat Patrol, you can still buy and play Venerable Dreads for Grey Knights only.

I think GW will give DE a good update if they do, but I’ll be worried about losing the absolutely effortless kitbashing compatibility the DE range currently has. The plastics we have now don’t even really need an update and hold up extremely well. The faces are just a little goofy. GK is completely up in the air but I think they’ll try to make them.more ornate than the current stuff with little aesthetic change.

Leviathans are legitimate monsters as just better primaris dreadnoughts but slightly cheaper with more weapon options.
Heads up tho, the leviathan kit comes as either all melee or all shooting and the shooting one/upgrade set only comes with one of each gun
>>
I'm huffing copium but I think the predators, vindicator and whirlwind will come back mid-edition or next edition once they update the base rhino chassis.

So why does GW hate the daemon cross compatibility? Are there really that many people playing both 40K and AoS? I feel like its better for them no? Don't need to sink tens of thousands of dollars into a mould and RnD while you can sell the same kit for AoS and 40K
>>
>>98566249
I mean Sisters already have a Predator, Razorback and Whirlwind in the form of Castigator, Immolator and Exorcist. Only new one would be a sisters Vindicator.

Which honestly I'm all in for. We lack anti tank and a sisters Vindicator would solve that.
>>
>>98566236
Big issue for them is they don’t really have a place in the line with the hover shit being around.
On the other hand GW unironically thinks marines having a dozen redundant options all competing for each battlefield role is a good idea so the rhino coming back and actually getting more variants isn’t even that unlikely of a possibility.
>>

With the announcement and slow squatting over the years the total is

10 assault marines
A Razorback, a Whirlwind, a Predator Annihilator, a Stormtalon, and two Typhoons

Honestly the only reason I play AOS at all is because of Daemon Cross compatibility. I wasn't sure if I would like the game but I thought "well if I don't like AOS I can just use these for 40K only"

Without cross compatibility I wouldn't have given AOS a chance at all. Them being cross compatible created sales for AOS exclusive units they would have never gotten otherwise.

If you want to double up on your weapon of chose yes.
It’s one storm cannon, one melta lance, and one gravis per box. If you want double of either you have to source the second gun. I prefer mine with melta and a siege claw so I got a melee one and bought the range upgrade set so if I ever wanted a second levithan I could just get whichever box applied to how I wanted it build.
>>
>>98566260
The amount of work to convert the current SoB vehicles to also be a "Sororitas Vindicator" kit would genuinely just be an extra sprue like the Castigator/Immolator/Exorcist already are to the Rhino.
It'd be the lowest effort "free win" that GW could pull off probably ever other than not even doing this Primaris/Firstborn thing in the first place by just saying "they're the same, but newer ones are just bigger." That Pandora's Box has already been opened though.
If they aren't doing this, they're utterly incompetent as a design studio, or are horrendously even greedier than previously believed.
>>
Is there any reason to not use a coloured primer if it's the right colour for your armour?
>>
>>98566230
New Archon works pretty well for kitbash still. Or at least the arms and heads. It is noticeably like 5% larger scaled than the old infantry arms were though. Malys is a clusterfuck of part cuts but so are all the epic hero models. Mandrakes are bizarre with their heads but their arms still work for some interesting bashes at least and they never really were good for kitbashing before anyway.

>>
>>98566283

Lots, depends though on what method you are using and your goals. Othertimes it just makes thing easier to prime a certain color. Priming pink or brown can make a top coat of yellow pop in a way that it otherwise wouldn't for example. If you have a majority white model its pretty good to prime white, but otherwise people generally prime white parts with a gray.

Functionally they would rather make zero profit or hit the jackpot on a new player then get a steady income from a returning one

>>
>>98566281
Immolator/Exorcist/Castigator don't use the regular Rhino sprue. They use a different sprue that is much and I mean much easier to build compared to the regular Rhino one. And they actually try to emulate the look of the 30K Deimos Rhino rather than the Mars Pattern one. Only sisters vehicle that uses that sprue is the actual Rhino.

However all they would need to do is add a extra sprue for the sister Rhino based vehicle sprue to build a sister Vindicator. Or if they are even lazier just add a sister bits sprue for the regular Vindicator. But yeah I'd love a Sister Vindicator since I think it looks badass and would want a Sisters version of it. And it fits our theme of having bunch of close range anti tank.
>>
>>98566305
Oi, Perturabo. Where's my damn hover tank?
>>
>>98566283

It'll lack any contrast, not much different from dipping your mini into a can of paint (which is also an army painter method).

That's fine for some armies, using Leadbelcher primer for Necrons and Auric Gold primer for Custodians is pretty normal. But I don't know if most Ultramarines or Blood Angels players use Macragge Blue/Mephiston Red primers as a base.
>>
>>98566309
>They use a different sprue that is much and I mean much easier to build compared to the regular Rhino one
The regular rhino is extremely easy to build and goes together better than many newer tanks
>>
>>98566286
That’s good. I’m just a bit fearful they’d make the new stuff mono build and have shit like 1/3rd of a torso and arm attaching to the left side of the codpiece and thigh.

Not benched but potential for loadout changes and different abilities/leader combos. Infiltrators just lost "close combat weapons" for fists, so the time I spent putting knives was all for naught! Loota/burnas probably since they got removed. Maybe back as a kill team
Maybe updated grots since they are still the old kit, but also who cares?
Stormboyz probably since they are old style Orks.
Maybe some of the older vehicles, but they have aged gracefully.
Maybe a named character or two since we are still missing a lot of the 10th edition culling.
>>
>>98566236
Nah, they've updated it twice already (HH and SoB). They don't fit with the primaris design direction. They're probably going to be removed from the CSM range soon, every time they're put in a combo box with newer sculpts they clash badly.
>>
>>98566277
i see, so if i dont care about getting x2 of a weapon option, i should be fine tho right with just the stuff out the kit? like i wont have empty gaps in the middle or something?
>>
>>98566309
>don't use the regular Rhino sprue
Correct, they use the Sororitas Rhino sprue. I should have better clarified which Rhino kit I meant.
>source: I built a Castigator like a month ago and still have the SoB Rhino-specific bits like the doors and the roof fleur-de-lis panel left over on the sprue
>>
A Dominion box still hangs large in my local hobby store.
Should I contact the government and make sure the building gets listed status for having such a relic?
>>
>>98566301
I think it has less to do with "oh no we want to prevent people from double dipping" and more with the completely autistic bean-counting that makes models being shared between systems verboten (except for custodes for some reasons).
Tow just got an enormously expensive dragon for their chaos warriors, and apparently so is AoS in a couple of months. How stupid is that? I understand that gw wants to prevent crossover to *some* extent so they can better see exactly how much each system is making on their own, but at a certain point they're just shooting themselves in the foot.
>>
>dark eldar slaves
>radical inquisitor approved xenos
>tau auxiliaries
>chaos renegade xenos mercenaries
Would be so easy to flesh this out just a little more for minor races like saharduin, nicassar, grug, chaos eldar
>>
>>98566353
Yeah but it's still kind of wrong because the Sororitas Rhino uses the regular Rhino kit and gives an extra sprue.

Though it definitely makes me feel robbed when castis and such only include two sprues while the regular sororitas Rhino includes three sprues. Yet the castis and such cost 1.6 times more than the regular Rhino.
>>
>>98566243
I just don't see a reason to keep the rhino but not the other rhino based vehicles unless unless they wanna drip feed them as they are just an extra sprue on top of the rhino.
>>
>>98566351
Yeah you have all the parts to fully arm and build him you just wont be able to double up any single weapon.
Per the range weapons set box
>The kit includes the components to build three heavy weapons for a Leviathan Dreadnought – a cyclonic melta lance, grav-flux bombard, and storm cannon – each of which can be mounted on either of your Leviathan's arms.

So he will have everything you need just no double weapons and no melee in the box (outside of his kicking attack)
>>
>>98566360
In pretty much every other business model, having a way of introducing a customer to a new service or product is going to lead to more people buying things from that service and/or product line.
Obviously, John Warhammer knows what they are doing and I cannot criticise their income as a result. In saying that, a good way to 'groom' 40k players into AoS/Heresy was to have armies that went into multiple settings.
>>
>>98566261
>Big issue for them is they don’t really have a place in the line with the hover shit being around.
30k has predators and vindicators as cheap, less armoured gun boxes and sicarans as the bigger, big gun equivalent to gladiators. Both can fit just fine.
>>
>>98566367
I honestly don't expect Rhino based vehicles to last for Chaos. Once they get their Codex they will be out and only the regular Rhino will remain and that might be squatted too.
>>
>>98566313
Easier to build the old rhino if you don't care about gaps between the sides and the giant top plate piece. I haven't had to use gap filler on any of the new HH or SoB rhino based vehicles.
>>
>>98566362
>tau auxiliaries
If you mean human auxiliaries under the Tau, This can be achieved with the Cadian upgrade sprue. They could do this with the parts they're already selling, they'd just have to market them differently.
>>98566366

Vader's bodyguards look like they're from the Crusader model but I wonder where most of those heads are from. Though looking closer the stormtroopers don't look like kitbashes so much as guardsmen painted as stormtroopers.
>>
>>98566372
40K has the issue of it doesn’t play at the scale of heresy and you aren regularly needing to dip into really beefy profiles to deal with regular threats.
In 30k something like the typhon is a bit of an over investment in its speciality that will occasionally struggle to find targets worth its shooting. In 40K the same unit is outright a waste unless you run it to hunt terminator equivalents or as a bad over costed tank hunter.

>How many Dreads has GW forced you to shelf
1. I will not sell it or throw it out. I have had since I was a child. Bad paint, broken parts, it's all part of the memories of losing every game but having fun years ago. That said I need to figure out what to do with my bunker that I didn't get to use.

Also makes me wonder what they're going to do with Space Wolves and Blood Angels exclusive dreadnoughts. With a new captain on bike and focus on speed this edition, I figure the chaplain and librarian dreadnoughts are just going to go away when they get a codex sadly - I still want a chaplain one for my dark angels even if not legal. Bjorn I assume will get a redemptor version.

It's funny how so much of this squatting and crap could have been avoided if they just said "Here's the new kit" like they're doing for our landspeeder and terminators, instead of rebranding and doubling the number of kits because they wanted to focus on tacticool redesigns and trademark names. Whats the next primaris unit to get squatted? I think all the phobos units will just be consolidated into one in 12th.
>>
>>98566398
I believe all the recent model updates for anything that isn't primaris have proved already that regular model updates sell just fine and you don't need to take away core units that have defined an army for decades to get people to buy new models.
>>
>>98566401
Yeah but GW hates cross compatibility as we can see with Chaos. Though I guess if they sell them as Chaos Deimos Predators and such and as such avoid corpo autism which system got the actual sales of the units.
>>
>>98566374
Chaos doesn’t really have the motorpool and anti armor to lose all the rhino variants and not really suffer for it.
Without the rhino variants their ranged AT becomes just the defiler which a huge points sink, the forge fiend which is a casino cannon, turning the land raider into a tank hunter, or havocs which nobody really uses even if I like them.
>>
>>98566259

The levithan does have the catch of he is kind of just split into separate parts for the sake of saying he has a high parts count. For example the head is two parts right down the eyes leaving an ugly seam because ??? And most of the guns have bad ones you can even see in the promos

Here is his instructions so you can see what’s going on with his build https://imgur.com/gallery/plastic-legion-leviathan-siege-dreadnought-melee-variant-wvQ4cWv

They're the same size.
There's 2 variants, the normal one has the same and more than the 40k Predator.
The "Support" version comes with exotic HH main guns.
But I think there's Legends rules for most of those.
>>
>>98566447
I honestly don't know. But I can see that happening. With Chaos it actually makes more lore sense for most factions since all the regular Chaos Predators and such are just looted loyalist stuff.

With Sisters as well if you look the Exorcists and Castigators are also based on the Deimos Rhino and not Mars Pattern. So honestly they could just release a Sister and Chaos Deimos Rhino. And Chaos Deimos Vindicator and Predator. Those molds are also pretty new since they were released in 2022.
>>
>>98566441
That just needs a load of trim to fit fine. CSM don't need completely different vehicles. That's silly.
>>
>>98566424
The deimos pattern predator has all the weapons for 40K loadouts inaddition to extra ones for HH specific loadouts. There are two kits though, the "predator support tank" kit irrc only has goofy HH specific weapons.

ahhhh so you havent built a rhino chassis vehicles in the last decade.
The base sprue mold is ancient and it produces warped plastic, that requires series work to fix. Or you end up with huge fucking aps. Its the same with the wave serpent/falcon, and the landraider. This isnt a O no you got a bad one. its all of them, every one.

DG's exclusive vehicle, the crawler, which fits their aesthetics perfectly (duh) is just a corrupted version of the 30k aquitor. I don't see why they can't do the exact same corruption to the rhino. No need for a different vehicle.
>>
>>98566398
GW said no. And there are no rumors. And it wouldnt make sense even in existing lore, or how they squatted them for SM. They game loyalists 9 years to switch to grav. That would be giving CSM 0 years.

They basically need to turn it into a demon engine if they want to have it match any CSM "vehicle" they've made in the last ~10 years. The design studio has seemingly moved away from CSM having anything vaguely industrial looking in their lineup to baroque flesh monstrosities with teeth sticking out randomly.

People thought that about 11th edition too. It's not going to get better.
The game as a whole has sucked dicks since 6th edition.
7th almost killed GW and 40k with it.
8th was a improvement but changed lot of shit people didn't like.
9th was more or less 8th but still worse than what came before even if it was slightly better than 8th.
10th then came around to completely fuck up everything entirely in worst ways imaginable.
11th is just same shit as 10th with GW doubling down on it.

12th edition won't be better at all, just drop that delusion now.
The game has sucked for almost half the editions and GW has actively shown that it isn't going to make the game better at all.

All thing consider 7th core rules are Good for 40k standards.
The issue with 7th are the army rules that are an absolute clusterfuck.
When an army has free transport for every single unit in it, resulting in about 200 to 500 extra points in a 2k game is not the most broken shit you could make during that time shows they fucked up army rules hard.
You can see it is not the base rules, because you can grab a 3rd codex and it works fine with 7th. Same can not be say with a 7th codex and bring it to 3rd.

Nah, he’s right. The explanation GW gave for the old armor marks showing up on Primaris is that the Imperium is dealing with supply issues, so older gear is being rotated back into service though they’ve clearly been Primaris-ified.
The updated Space Wolves kits already had some random old mark looking armor slapped onto them too. At most, this is probably just going to mean alternative heads, maybe a couple of torso front options, and a few spare shoulder pads.
Realistically, it means squads will end up with body’s specifically in some armor variant. You’ll always have at least one model wearing MK VIII armour with Primaris legs, while still being free to mix and match whatever head and shoulder pads you want on him for example.
Maybe they eventually try and key jangle by having a set of dudes predominantly in some older set of armor, but it’s really doubtful you are going to get a ton of options to customize beyond two options per marine and some interchangeable bits like heads and shoulders.

Shoulder pads, well known for being a bit GW is particularly stingy with
>>
>>98566607
The "head" is just an ornamental sensor system. The body of the interred marine is in a coffin for all of them.
>>
>>98566874
It's likely they'll add some other options into the kits too.
GW did that with the Sternguard veteran multipart kit, it contained bunch of detail options, like extra shin plates, etc. that GW just never showed off for some reason.
Honestly GW needs to work more on their presentation of the models and potential options. Show off all the options for kits.
Though I do agree they should add more variation into the primaris kits. But this is still in the right direction and I'm happy they did at least this.

o ye actual people go out and play: how often do you see actual marines instead of primarinos? bought, recasts, printed, everything goes. from what I gathered the number of 40k consoomers has skyrocketed and with it the sales of primarinos that are the main attraction for 9 years now. I haven't visited any lgs in years, but last time all I saw on tables were primarinos. marines had it coming for years and I think that the majority of 40k players (read: consoomers and metaslaves) won't notice anything. so who will be affected by this grim(DARK) madness exactly? people who play with friends homebrew all the time anyway. I can already see the drama dead in 1 week outside of this general.

If the Ork Boyz kit is anything to go by, the optional bits will probably just be a few shoulder pads, holstered weapons, alt helmets, and maybe some purity seals. Orks didn’t get a ton of extras compared to how stacked the old Boyz kit was with random spares. Intercessors will probably get shown off sometime this week, so we’ll see, but there’s no way we’re getting parts to make a bunch of completely different marks of armour between boxes.
GW is also impressively bad at showing off kits. When the new trolls were coming to AoS, people thought they looked shit and overly cartoonish because the ones they showed did. Turns out the options that were basically just the old fantasy trolls never got shown off because reasons. Meanwhile the fucking Hellbrute has every weapon option and multiple Legion schemes on full display.

Firstborn Marines are pretty much nonexistent on the table in my area not because of any “ew, firstborn are outdated” attitude, but because Primaris are basically all you can find in stores, and the rules are actively hostile to using the older models. The restrictions on what can do what and what can ride in which transports are a mess (Gravis armor suffers from the same problem and barely shows up for the same reason).
Our Blood Angels player used to run Devastators to deal with armor until he switched to Kratos tanks. Our Grey Knights player, by default, still runs the old marines by default obviously

40k’s biggest problem is that what still draws a lot people in even in the modern era is almost entirely pre-8th edition. The art, the lore, Dawn of War, some genuinely cool models. Odds are whatever hooked you isn’t even in the game anymore.
It’s stuck in the same weird place Star Wars is right now. The thing that actually gets people interested is the original trilogy (and maybe the prequels). But if you jump in today or you’ve been hanging on you’re faced with this schizophrenic modern mess of Ahsoka, Maul running around, random original characters treated like the most important people in the galaxy, and Baby Yoda… all while the same people tell you the old stuff sucked anyway, then immediately piss themselves with excitement the second the new material name drops it.

Warhammer is a legacy brand that actively despises it is a legacy brand.

Mostly nailed it, but I will give GW this - even in recent years they OCCASIONALLY put out some stuff that's still good top quality. It's not as grim as Star Wars where every single thing sucks complete utter turbowoke AIDS dick. For example, even this piece of art which just came out a few years ago, kicks ass and captures much of the old spirit of 40k. Or, an even more recent example, many of the new Ork models (not all, but many of them) are absolutely great.

And that's the real problem. That's why there is no mass exodus and we cannot let go. Because for every two things modern GW fucks up and shittifies and replaces with retcons and slop and ugly woke bullshit or primaris faggotry, they do one thing right, and we all keep holding onto that thread of hope that maybe, after long enough, the balance will shift back towards getting it right more often than not. That's the suckiest part of all of this. We are constantly strung along with this faint hope.

>But 12th edition will be a big reboot

I'm actually getting tired of the reboot shit. All the editions between 3rd and 7th only had small changes, but the core gameplay largely remained the same. That made the transition from one edition to another a lot easier and also made it so each army didn't need a new codex every edition. An army could go a few editions without a new codex and it would be fine.

This constant "let's completely rewrite the entire game every three years" bullshit is terrible for players. You have to essentially relearn the entire game every three years and that blows.

Think a big part of being trapped it is how easy it is to tell GW to fuck off and still stay in the hobby.
Your army loses a bunch of its old flavour and options, and you don’t like the new designs? Fuck you, I’ll just play with the legends rules.
Your faction now revolves around some giant centrepiece model? No, fuck you, I’ll just play without it.
They updated your range in a visually unappealing, dogshit way? Fuck you, I’ll keep my old models.
Everything has to be marine hyper-focus zoom zoom bullshit? Fuck you, I wanna play with my xenos.
Marines are probably the only faction genuinely getting their arm twisted. They either fully embrace modern 40K or they have to fuck off from the faction entirely (unless they’re willing to homebrew rules or play older editions). Most other factions can just give the middle finger and keep going like it’s whatever edition they prefer.

So you have about a decade worth of content for a single edition. With most of the original issues fixed and with so much stuff to do that even decades later stuff like the lost and the damned still find new things to do with the army and that thing was a spinoff army

>No one discusses the modelling or painting or lore or old games ever!
Yeah, they really don't. There's been 2 different times where people tried making a dedicated 40k 4th edition and each time it lasted like 1 month before it died.

If you want to talk about old 40k stuff there already exists the /GROG/ thread and you can talk about old stuff there.

Even though it caused a lot of arguments and rules lawyering, I liked how vehicles were handled back then compared to now. Vehicle weapons had set firing arcs, different armor values based on front side and rear armor as well. So vehicle positioning and facing actually mattered. Also vehicles could have numerous effects from getting hit aside from just losing wounds like it is now. Those effects ranged from the crew getting temporality knocked out, to individual weapons being destroyed, to the vehicle being destroyed outright and violently exploding in a single hit.

>ITS FINE THAT GW INVALIDATED HALF OF YOUR ARMY SPACE MARINE PLAYERS CAUSE JUST PLAY WITH THE LEGENDS RULES
Listen you braindead motherfuckers, I started playing at the tail end of 8th. I have multiple kits that didn't get rules, even legends rules for at least 1 edition going from 8th-9th-10th-11th. I have one kit that has gotten no rules, not even legends since 8th edition. Consigning a kit to legends rules means they die a slow death. It invalidates the purchasers money and time. It drives me livid to see people defend it. It is such a blatant level of disrespect for the consumer but the paypigs eat it up anyways. Fucking maddening.

That is honestly why you should actively encourage the use of legends rules and treat them as the “OOP units” side of the hobby, not the “old thing we don’t give a fuck about anymore” part. Not everything can stay in production forever, but old units should remain as viable now as they were in their day, even after they have gone out of production.
Ironically, moving into Legends for 10th edition was some of the most love a lot of units received. While they were still technically “fully supported” in 9th, that edition had a full print Forge World book that was a complete mess of missing units and broken rules, because it shipped at the start of the edition still using 8th edition army rules and abilities. And that was a mainline product they charged money for.
Seething at legends (and at people willing to use them) is wasted breath. Demand that GW treat them with the respect they deserve instead of directing that energy at the players who still field them. In 9th, being moved to legends often felt like the end. In 10th you could actually get solid rules. Going into 11th legends are even getting a degree of recognition from GW. Look at how The Old World guys handled it legends are simply free rules for the army, and that’s it.
>>
>>98567382
I am lucky in that my gaming group does not care whether something is legends or not. You are correct that 10th had way more support for legends than 9th, which was one of the few good things about 10th. It's never affected me, but I always hear that people will refuse to to play against legends units cause they're not balanced or whatever and that's got to hurt.

ToW players typically use renegade rules which are community modifications to the Legends armies to make them more viable and fix obvious shit that needs errata. It's even in most army builders by default. Getting a modern 40k player to accept playing with legends units alone is like pulling teeth, accepting community patches in tournaments is not even remotely possible at the moment.

People refusing to play Legends units because “they’re not balanced” is really funny to me, given the absolute shit state of the actual balance at any given point.

>>98567450
Nothing is really in a position for a major refresh to that degree right now, beyond maybe the Grey Knights GW might try to make them look more visually distinct from regular Marines. Everything else is either decently up to date or already has a very clear visual identity for what new models should look like.
The only other candidate that comes to mind is Daemons. Their range is old, they have a ready made excuse for a massive visual overhaul, and the faction could really use more god specific Daemons plus assorted Warp fuckery creatures for variety when players stick to a single god. But GW clearly hates the idea of Daemons being usable across multiple systems, so that’s unlikely to happen unless they create an entirely new Daemons range locked to just one game.

I can almost guarantee it boils down to simplicity. There wasn't each unit having their own rules or objectives or a lot of the bloat there is in modern editions.

Well based on your description here alone (I haven't read any votann lore myself yet) it sounds more like a spiced mead/mulled wine type drink, and given they're dorfs I'd lean more towards mead. The spices can be quite earthy and include some sort of stimulant. Spiced ales are a thing, brown or dark ales are very British and earthy, though beer is not generally served warm ofc (though in Engerland is often drunk at room temp). I'm going to guess you're either a chink or mutt if your mind jumped to chinese tea

Felt like a wargame, not like analogue League of Legends mixed with MtG mechanics.

Blast templates, scatter, armour facings, vehicle damage tables, fire arcs, morale that actually made things run away, better mission design, initiative, force org charts, huge armouries with options, deep strike wasn't restricted to an arbitrary denial range, the game wasn't balanced around having stacking auras or special abilities that only activate while standing on generic objectives or using the right gotcha stratagems, psychic powers actually existed, kill team wasn't a separate game with completely different stats and mechanics that made you relearn everything just to play, special characters required opponent's permission to use and only at certain game sizes, board sizes were bigger with more room to move around and felt like a battlefield instead of a video game arena, army sizes were smaller and easier to collect/manage, different terrain had different immersive rules (jungle, ice worlds, swamps, cityfight), re-rolls were rare, there were over 50 subfactions when you included all the optional content from chapter approved and imperial armour and supplements, no flyers unless you wanted to use the optional flyer rules from Forge World (which were way better than later editions), same deal with super-heavies, game was so easy to learn I picked it up when I was still single-digit years old, easy to adjust rules from any edition 3rd-7th to make it compatible with 4th if you want, rules to custom design your own vehicles/proper looted wagons for orks, rules to make your own giant tyranid monsters, rules to make your own custom space marine chapters, rules to make your own imperial guard regiments that were so detailed and varied you could even custom build alien wildlife for your rough riders to use as exotic mounts, every chaos legion felt different and had 300 options, this game was literally so much fucking better than modern editions I am running out of characte

Why can't other paint companies make good washes? Seriously, there are some halfway decent ones, but no other company can seem to make a wash that performs quite as well as fucking Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. All other brands I've tried mute or darken my entire paint job way too much while Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade do an awesome job of just settling into the recesses without darkening my paint job too much, even when I just slather it on the entire model.

I fucking hate GW and hate having to say anything good about them, but damn they still make the best washes. Other companies may have caught up to them in other areas, but they are still leagues ahead of the rest of the industry when it comes to washes.
>>
>>98567235
>>98567694
The rules were designed to facilitate a wargame that fitted the idea of what a fictional battle looked like from a narrative perspective, so they were fluffy. What this means is there's a bunch of immersive things like armor facings so where your tank is pointing matters, having to actually turn your guns to point at their targets. In melee combat you had a chart that compared Weapon Skill stats to determine what roll you needed to land a hit rather than being static to the weapon. Re-rolls are incredibly rare, and in general you don't roll the huge piles of dice like you do in modern 40k so every single result matters. A character with T5, 3 wounds, and a 4+ invuln save is considered stupidly tanky. But what this also means is that if your idea is to capital-g Gamer it, then it's very easy to break, or at the very least try to argue over as-written vs as-intended. This is why Templates and Guess- weapons went away. The biggest difference to what it was actually like though, is that you did not know what you were facing until it happened. In modern 40k there is a lot of communicating with each other on what your intentions are, not so for back in the day. Half of the game was surprisingly the other player with what you did. But, like the rules, this made it very easy to gotcha everyone if you were intending to.

Marines are huge, mostly monocolor, and don't have very many intricate details.
Trimming sprue ends and mould lines would be the only iffy part and that's down to "how long does it take for me to stop bleeding when I inevitably cut my finger" more than anything else.
I have painted exactly one (1) space marine, it was the free model once when I went into a Warhammer store. The rest of my paint experience is on smaller figures with more details, I am in no way afraid of painting a space marine.

Nearly finished rebuilding and cleaning up eBay rescues for a retro project after stripping them yesterday. Will need get some jump packs for the assault marines 3D printed.

Still deciding on a Chapter for them. Amusingly, I’m going to have two retro projects now as these guys are tiny next to my upscaled tacticals I was hoping to combine them with. Will post the comparison next.

I like what their washes do when they settle in the recesses, but they still darken things down way too much if you get them on raised areas.

>>
How good are panel liners since shade paints are only good for recess shading anyway
>>
>>98567655
Absolutely. Battle ready is just three colors and a base: spray prime with the main color, paint the gun another color, pick out metallics, slap some texture paste onto the base, done.

What army has the worst battleline units to paint? Not like quantity but like one model from beginning to end
>>
>>98567735
Maybe the armypainter wash mixed with speedpaint medium will be what you’re looking for?

I think it should work like contrast medium plus citadel shade paint or ak’s quick gen medium and their acrylic washes too.
I’m unsure what the secret sauce in the contrast mediums are that makes the washes work better.

GSC.
Weirdly overly detailed front the spamable kind of unit they are. Something like guard you could base coat one color and say yep that’s the uniform, pick out the skin tone and metallics, and call it done even if to a poor standard. GSC has a lot of stuff that demands to be picked out color wise.

That’s kind of what I was thinking with the Soul Drinkers. Battered old veterans, cast out of the Imperium and lost in the warp. I think that fits the eBay recuses quite well.

As for my upscaled guys, I’m still puzzling. I have a tactical squad and devastator squad built so far. Want to get them all painted before I get anything else.

Depends. If it's something I've done lots of times before, I switch. Whatever colors I do initially I often do as a batch, stuff that's easy and doesn't need precision. After a few steps of that is laid down, I will usually switch over to one model at a time. As an example, my Orks usually get their metallics and skin tones done as a batch, then everything else gets finished model by model.

If you don't have silty soil or sand in your area for good texture, you can also go buy a bag of play sand. Sieve it for larger rocks (you can save them as more basing material) and you can just use that instead.
If you're doing like a kill team and that's it, you can also buy little bags of sand sold as "ballast" in varying grain sizes meant for model train dioramas so you don't have a 15 pound bag that's 95% full just sitting around.

Honestly it will take play one of the new codex to really see since that’s a far better way to tell if the design is up to snuff vs just playing 10th codexes with some extra rules on top

>How many Dreads has GW forced you to shelf
Only 1, I have one old boxnaught from like 2006 in a closet somewhere. When I did a refresh of my army more recently I have all new stuff.

Honestly, old marines are legal proxies for intercessors, devastators are desolators. And all of the tanks are just impulsors as far as I'm concerned. You can use the vast majority of your army and people aren't going to mind. Even at events you can use the "legal proxies" stuff unless a TO says no if I understand correctly.

>>98566735
Marines, orks, emp's children, custodes, and necrons are strong while being fairly straightforward. Custodes have a smaller average model count so each activation matters a lot, which is the difficulty with them.
khorne marines are also pretty straightforward and ok but they have a couple meta difficulties.
Orks are arguably the best faction in the game right now and they literally just decalare advance+charge when they feel like it and kill stuff. Small boards favor them, and they have an absurd optional play pattern at the moment where you take 3 max size boyz mobs and attach warbosses and painboys and it's just really simple and super effective. One might say it's both cunningly brutal and brutally cunning in it's simplicity. However, this is the exact sort of thing that gets nerfed because it's problematic, so don't build/collect around it. Buy 30 boyz if that's what you like to see, paint, assemble, and play. Not because it's meta.

But honestly don't go for what is easy just because it's easy. the same goes for painting. You should absolutely 100% go with the faction that has the best models or lore for you, and you should just learn to paint them or learn to play them even if it's harder. It will just take more time, that's all.

That's always been what the guard was, since 2nd edition. They bring in all these different regiments to a warzone, throw them into a meatgrinder, and then the left over 10% of guys that survive from each regiment are just combined into one ragtag mishmash group afterwards because the logistics of getting every little group of survivors to match up with a new fresh regiment from their same homeworld is impossible. So you can justify having a regiment of all the same guys if they're fresh arrivals who just got to the battlefield, but can just as easily justify throwing a little of everything into a big mixing pot and running Catachans and Valhallans and Cadians and Kriegers and Steel Legion all together. That's another reason Commissars exist, they act as the glue to teach all these different parts to get along and smooth over cultural differences.

Predictions for the MFM

Orks nerfed.
Dark Angels nerfed.

Raven Guard buffed.
SoB buffed.
Agents buffed.
Guard slightly buffed.
Eldar transports reduced cost.

I think detachment DP cost and detachment disposition access are two good balance valves for them to manipulate now instead of just points costs. Like there are a few detachment combos that are obviously very strong that are currently dominating (forgefathers+librarius was insane for a while which they nerfed, and now it's the ork combo). Another neat thing is they don't have to adjust DP necessarily, they also have the mutually exclusive keyword system, like Champions of Faith and Sacred Champions both being keyworded so they can't be taken together.
And if you want to buff a faction or a specific detachment, but you don't want to touch their points or their DP or their keywords, you can even just slot in a different disposition for a certain detachment that just synergises better or worse. They did this once already in the previous MFM update where they tightened the number of detachments that had access to Purge.

Just assembled my first models ever. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Took me 5 hours to assemble 4 Khorne Cultists, and I fucked up the angles of the limbs on a couple of 'em. I can see the appeal though, there's something soothing about shaving off the little hanging pieces of plastic and smoothing it all out. I probably shouldn't have done it in bed though, I'm gonna be sleeping in resin shavings tonight. Any tips for minimizing the amount of nubbins that come off of the mold sheets? I used regular ass scissors and I feel like that was wrong.

Yeah you'll damage bitz that way. You want something super sharp like a knoife or cutters, anything blunt will twist the pieces around more as you try to cut and possibly damage them

people did the math orks up 15-20%.
I did my newly built 1475pts, in the new codex it is 1625. My guess is GW is targeting 15-25% deciding on the quality of the army.
Pulling 200-250pts out of a current 2k list should help with map balance, and play time.

And even if hordes stay mostly the same, they will have less enemies to shoot still. So still some time savings.

The only thing besides models you buy from GW is primer. Unless you can find monument hobbies primer then thats better. Besides that buy Army Painter, Vallejo, or monument paints.
Yes this shit all adds up. But the tools and paints last for fucking ever so its really really worth the investment.
>>
>>98568546
Yeah, it's all a learning experience but knives will do that. You'll notice different sizes of sprue connections, James loves to do these dicky little ones onto spindly details, that's where you carefully use a knife. Thicker connections really should be done with cutters

yeah they had one connected to one of the little skulls on a belt piece for some fuckall reason and it snapped off while I was extracting it. luckily I was able to glue it back on perfectly, it's probably the biggest W I had in the 5 hours I did it today.
>>
>>98568560
Plastic cement melts and fuses plastic together. Helps with gaps too. Just be careful not to smudge it if you accidentally spill it anywhere.
>>
>>98568567
interdasting, thanks for the hot tip. because of how I fucked up some of the orientation of some of the limbs there are some noticeable gaps.
>>
>>98568546
>am tarded ples understand
I mean that much is obvious with the scissors. But why in bed? Do you not have any flat surfaces in your house?
>>
>>98568571
It might be more appropriate to call the gaps plastic cement helps with "seamlines." Bigger gaps you'll want greenstuff or some other hobby putty for.
And on the note of seamlines do be mindful of how much cement you put down. I have multiple times gone retard mode, put down too much cement, and squelched some out while pressing two parts together. Apparently I never learned that lesson when I was assembling shit with gorilla glue.
>>

Dw, it certainly had its flaws. There was a lot of finnickiness and arguments over what was under blast/flame templates or not, what vehicle facing was being hit... If you were playing pickup games with any random asshole, rather than your buds who'd be cool and not get into such disagreements it could get frustrating. When we have holograph tech down pat we can bring back templates that you can just illuminate on the table and have it dead clear who's in and out

The same dickheads who would do this find ways to be annoying in modern editions too. Never change soulful rules to cater to soulless people. Just play with cool people.
>>
>>98568690
>There was a lot of finnickiness and arguments over what was under blast/flame templates or not,
Did 4th drop the "Chance of being hit" rule that 3rd had for bases partially under the blast templates? Where if a base was only partially under the template you roll a die and on a 4+ they'd be hit. Felt it was a good rule to reduce arguments and just say "roll the die"
They brought it back for Old World, though I still don't think it should apply to flame templates.
>>
>>98568640
have you ever had to deal with a sperg trying to cheat on blast / flamer templates?

have you ever had to deal with a busted codex dropping and knowing that there was nothing you could do about it for an entire edition?
>>
>>98568690
>When we have holograph tech down pat we can bring back templates that you can just illuminate on the table and have it dead clear who's in and out
We'll just be accurately simulating the entire battlefield in some form of video game version before we get holograms down, and at that point we won't need chance for hits it'll be accurately simulated based on the mind and soul of the marine
>>
>>98568700
Just checked the 4th rulebook and it still has the chance of being hit rule.
I guess a lot of people forget about it or just never fully read it.

>Did 4th drop the "Chance of being hit" rule that 3rd had for bases partially under the blast templates? Where if a base was only partially under the template you roll a die and on a 4+ they'd be hit.

Better a busted codex in a soulful edition than an edition not worth playing at all. I played with friends who agreed not to take broken shit, it's just that fucking simple.
