are you sure kainans not just supposed to be a variant of floaty scythe guy? they're pretty similar with the head shape, no mouth, those hanging tokens on the hip and neck, the black bone coloration, the weapon handles are also similar with both having that long rune etched haft with spinal column bits (on the bottom of kainans but on the top of soul reapers)

I did your homework for you and checked the army book, none of the dragon designs present in the book look anything like the magmadroth. Closest you get is the little page divider icon (top right) and that one is still a ways away. The dragon iconography seems to be either based on the whfb noodle dragons (like on the irondrake gun, or the art on the bottom left) or on generic norse/anglo-saxon dragon motifs They seem very smooth and snake-like on the hole

And here's the schizo looking asian magmadroth connections. There's a lot of specific visuals that you can point squarely to asian influences, though which specific flavour is a bit harder to pin down.
The nose-horn thing is a very prominent feature in SEA dragon designs (though admittedly also in some western ones, like for example the welsh dragon)
The flames on the ""shoulders"" seem to be derived from east asian dragon designs, as you can clearly see here. The flared tail is also very commonly found in both east and south-east asian dragons.
The wavy/spikey mane is also pretty asian.
I'm not knowledgeable enough about different asian depictions of dragons to really say where most of the influence comes from, but they're certainly asian.
The depictions I've found of asian dragons that most closely match the magmadroth are those from Vietnam, which is kind of a borderzone between chinese and more specific south-eastern culture. (though afaik these depictions are from the Le dynasty, which was more sinicized than some of the earlier vietnamese dynasties)
As you can see they're relatively stocky which matches the magmadroth well. Looking at them side by side, Vietnam definitely looks like the best pick.

its long known that the aos sculptors dont just pick a single cultural influence per army like whfb, but instead blend multiple cultures, so this checks out that they would essentially sample platter several cultural references on their design board when drafting a faction. there's also obvious greek influence in fyreslayers too with the crests and helmet design, and the overall hoplite-ness of the troops.

NTA but I think a big problem with the new Ogor stuff is they dumbed down the lore big time. The focus isn't on the Ogors themselves culturally, they have been flanderized thoroughly. With the focus/depth now in the named characters, which are frankly quite derivative and a poor replacement for focusing on Ogor society more broadly.

Perhaps now is the time to remind people that these people released their sales numbers. At its heighest point in its launch year (2024) tow contributed about 2% of sales (compared to aos at 8% and 40k at 17%) and has since declined to 0.6%

>>
>>98571919
Remember when Goblin Trader did an interview video where they said AoS has been struggling sales wise since TOW released.

Now remember that Goblin Trader is responsible for 2% of ALL global GW sales revenue. They are the largest mainland EU wargaming third party store. This is a single pop and pop operation in a middle sized town in Canada.
>>
>>98571900
>The focus isn't on the Ogors themselves culturally

But it explicitly is, most of the book is dedicated to the shakeup, how this affects the tribes, what has changed, and the new characters.

LIKE for a full refresh on the lore and a new kickoff point I think it's perfectly fine for a faction that has been doing dickall in the bg.

>>
>>98571966

>>
>>98571974
>Bro these guys are 2% of GW global revenue. 1/50 GLOBALLY.
Great! Now where’s the source on that?
>>
>>98571975
>Were you a big fan of ogors before the change?
Yes. My main issue was the focus on the very lame characters. I find this an issue of modern Warhammer in general, including 40k. There is too much focus placed on derivative characters, and less so on the faction in an anthropological sense. Old Warhammer would focus on the history, culture and even day to day life of different races and societies. Modern writing focuses on characters to the point where it feels like they are trying to write a narrative rather than a setting, and it comes off like it's written by mediocre no name 20-30 something year old English grads.
>>
>>98571966
So no? You didn't read it. Good to know. I believe you about the preorder, I just think you're retarded. Not for disliking the lore, but for the fact that you're basing your opinion on literally nothing.
>>
>>98571983
Goblin Trader, they say so in the video I linked itself, they literally say they calculated their revenues being 2% of GW's global revenue. They also said AoS has been struggling since TOW launched. Watch the vid it's all there, and you get to see how a big operation works too (that is only one of there stores they have like 10 physical stores in Spain.
>>
>>98572020
Okay great so you don’t have a source, and you know you can tag multiple posts, right?
>>
>>98572007
Ya know what, I'll agree with you on this. I'm not a big fan of the focus on characters as opposed to actual world building. (Especially with a multi-realm MASSIVE fuckoff setting like AOS)

It does get a bit old having everything be from the perspective of cannon lady and for some reason callis and toll (this is just a problem with GW writing in general, we can't have it fully from the perspective of the non-humans which I will take every opportunity to bitch about) I do think there has been a solid amount of work done to flesh out the new ogor biz and introduce the characters but I can see how annoying it is with Morga being like 1/3rd of the focus of the book.

Console war autism aside, do you have a timestamp for the 2% of gw remark?
I haven't found the 2% remark in the video itself, but I also found it hard to believe.
They make the claim that they move about 9 million euros. Assuming this video was recorded somewhere in 2025, gw had a revenue of about 565 million that year (excluding another 52.5 in licensing. In euros that works out to about 660 million, of which 2% would be 13.18 million. And again, without keeping in mind the extra 52.5 (~60 in euro) million licensing fees.
Now, goblin trader doesn't deal solely in gw. They also sell other wargames (infinity, for examples), as well as board games (e.g. catan) and paints (e.g. vallejo) and a bunch of other shit (mini cases, merch, that sort of stuff). So of that 9 million, not everything is gw either.
I'd appreciate it timestamp because some extra context might help clear things up, but as it stands the 2% claim doesn't hold much water.

Wargaming is big in spain, it has a very outsized community. Fantasy was also always huge there, so it wouldn't surprise me in the slighest if tow did better then aos there. But I wouldn't overstate this specific chain's influence, the 2% of gw stuff is pretty dubious.

It's bizarre. The army set was immediately sold out in the US but it's still available in the EU. I'm actually debating getting a second one.
>>98571900
I would guess the named characters not being so well received from both a lore and model perspective is a large factor in them "underperforming". Lack of maneaters, leadbelchers and BCR too. Gutbsters are boring but they are the core of the faction and had the oldest kits.

It's a very expensive box for ultimately not a lot of practice. This is a box where you really want a store discount. I was kind of interested but the usual online place where I get my discounted stuff was sold out in 5 min, and no fucking way I'm paying full gw price.
The standalone minis have turned out to be damn expensive too. There's no reason the ironguts for example should be basically as expensive as kroxigors when those are much bigger and come with way more options.
I guess they already factured in the september price hike for these guys? Because if not, whoo boy.

In some ways the game HAS become more complex in all the wrong ways with the current objective system, list building, and the newer armies having barrage of rules that do the same thing as everyone else with extra steps.
It's 40kfication of the game, where things are in a weird mix of overcomplicated and simple at same time.
>>
>>98572489
I wouldn't call the new listbuilding more complex, but I would say that it's very weirdly somehow both restrictive and boringly simple.
>>
I wish AoS would flop just to course correct 5th edition away from 4th but GW would make more money year on year no matter what at this point and the miniatures do still top competitors even if options are increasingly missing.
The idea that TOW and AoS compete is comical - they brought back WHFB to run alongside AoS because it doesn't matter, it's just more money. They literally make so much money they can just bring WHFB back because why not.
I think we'll see a crash soon because the economy on the whole will but for now we're eating good. Pure hopium. We got chorfs FFS. CHORFS. Did HoH flop? It doesn't even matter man. Who the fuck is buying Chorfs? GW still pumped them out

Is Age of Sigmar fun? Haven't played a miniatures game in a decadeish, and some of the new models are very cool. Every 40k player I asked told me their game sucked, does AoS?
>>
>>98572520
I think it's less "why not" and more to curbstomp possible competition given all of their announcements been always same time as KoW's 3rd and 4th massive release events even when GW had literally nothing to show for it.
And GW shown that Chorfs sold pretty good, three of their kits being really high points of sales. CoS did even better than them, but that's besides the point.

It's decently fun and great for just getting together and throwing some dice. Wouldn't call it best in the market, but arguably best of GW's major games (Bloodbowl is only game that I would call better if I said ALL games) and decently simple to play compared to their other IPs too (Other than, once again, Bloodbowl which is a dead simple game.) I'm most interested in the Maggotkin of Nurgle and the Orruk Warclans. I don't really understand the faction divisions - does everything in one range go together, or everything in the grand alliance?
>>
>>98572660
Everything in 1 range (So Maggotkin with Maggotkin). Chaos as a whole isn't an army by itself.
>>
>>98572660
We haven't had Grand Alliances in years, we don't even have the old ally rules that we used to have. The closest thing to both is a system called "Regiments of Renown" which are essentially mercenaries/dogs of war equivalent.

>>98572711
HoH are cool but their rules are quite an issue. They look simple enough to have quite the mass painting appeal, the lore is actually really cool and surprisingly in depth for a brand new faction, they just need a little more love and time in the rules and unit choice department. They’re probably my #1 choice for starting a chaos army if I ever did, with only StD being their closest competitor during to the simplicity of their rules.
>>
>>98572660
Range per range. Grand alliance mostly matters for stuff like which "allies" you can take. Used to be the case that every grand alliance could be played as a single army back in the day, but that's almost a decade ago at this point.
Warclans are a bit of a special case though, since it's basically two armies that share a tome; ironjawz (armour dudes) and kruleboyz (lanky dudes). You can run them together, but in a special 'army of renown'. Most people tend to focus on 1 half.

They've historically been quite unpopular yeah, also find it strange because I find them really cool and one of gw's more original takes on a faction. Maybe that's actually part of the reason why they weren't too popular back in the day? They didn't fit as neatly into standard fantasy tropes/expectations as many of the other factions.
Either way they seem to have had a bit of a resurgence in the last few years, perhaps helped by a really well received total war dlc. Good for them.

I own it. Its not a crazy amount of plastic and the kroxigors are surprisingly annoying to build. They are fun and nice to paint. Double dipping is perfectly fine, heck the big boi can even be built as a trog and foot saurus if you want, krox and saurus also have slightly different variants to. Kinda simple in terms of the spearhead gamemode nothing crazy. The magazines are launching now and the seraphon are the first army after the ratards and gold bois. The real cute secret with them is If you buy 2 of the first caransaur mag and 1 of the 2nd you can get a trog and carnisaur due to how the sprue works out.

that's not what the word means anon, i would say the ogre book actually did the exact opposite, because ogres thanks to total war and memes are just the big hungry guys who like to wear silly hats and do mercenary stuff with black powder in public consciousness, the AOS ogres have dragged them to being focused entirely on them being brutish nomads with as much de-emphasis of their comedic elements as possible. i expect them to return, the aos lore as of recent has often been written to only focus on what's playable, which sucks because it means they're anti-black powder, until gw releases a new leadbelcher kit in 2028 at which point it will be a big thing again
>>
>>98573566
Seems like leadbelchers and gunpowder in general will be tied to the maneaters going forward. Grell is basically just a leadbelcher anyway.
That'll leave us with 4 main subthemes within the ogre tome: gutbusters, bcr, mawseekers, maneaters.
>>
>>98572555
pretty fun. the current edition has a couple annoyances and the list building is pretty shallow but on the table it plays fast and smooth and punchy. its 100x more fun than 40k, i'd rather play sigmar any day of the week than 40k.

also helps that the models and army designs are a lot more interesting and creative than 40k too, only a couple xenos factions get close to aos in terms of creativity and interesting sculpts. it also has pretty much the only small game format from GW that actually works and is fun to play with spearhead.

Looking for some thoughts, advice etc.

I haven't collected/played/painted in 3/4 years now. I wanna get back into things, but I'm not sure on what faction to collect and pick. 40k is not for me anymore, its just Marine wank to hell. AoS with all its faults, has been held up by the fact that Stormcast have largely failed and no one cares for them which is a good thing.

But anyway I'm most liking:

Skaven, seems very cool. Lots of variation but it all works together. Monsters, chaff, machines, characters, big shit. Seems hordey though, and might be hard to do at scale.

Chaos Dwarfs, always loved them from Warhammer, they seem good here too. Not amazing but I just love the concept so much that I'm happy to make it work. Plus they seem relatively elite too. Scope for growth too, there's bound to be a second wave with cool stuff.

Ogres my lord. The models are fantastic. And they are suitably elite to make painting and collecting them a nice touch. Not very keen on their lore that much, its not bad, but its not very deep unfortunately. Wish they still had gunpowder units too. I love the addition of butchers, just wish it was not at the cost of gunpowder.
>>
>>98573662
Honestly I didn't expect helsmiths to do all that well. Even places that are usually super mega positive about everything gw puts out were a lot more mixed than usual, bit of a lukewarm reception. But I guess it's one of those cases where an army is just very polarizing, you either love them or hate them. They sold out basically immediately on the webstore, fucking centaurs are still unavailable in the us. They're not my cup of tea though I don't totally hate them either. Maybe if they do more with the hashutaar cult I might jump in with a spearhead or something, I did like those guys.
Anyway pleasantly surprised that they seem to have done well.
>>98573685
All else being equal skaven will probably be the cheapest to get into since they were a launch faction. Also got a massive wave in general so there's tons of options. Also have a pestilens update still in the near future that's been rumoured by reliable leakers. Oh, there's also currently a MTO running if you're into some retro stuff.
As for ogre gunpowder, it's worth noting that the same rumourmonger who leaked the entire release also said more maneater units would be coming next edition. Given that the new maneater hero we got is all about gunpowder, there's a good chance one of those new units will be the spiritual succesor to leadbelchers. Just something to keep in mind.
>>
>>98573745
See that's frusrtating as well. Skaven have room for growth.

Ogres have room for growth.

Chorfs have room for growth. They all seem cool and worth investing in.
>>
>>98573761
What's you play/collect back in the day? What kind of army generally interests you more? Skaven are obviously more hordey and ogres are the second most elite army in the game.
>>
>>98573662
anons and repeating baseless claims as if they were fact? never seen that before
>>
>>98573745
I think you're right on the money with them being polarizing. I love them, though I'm polarized within the range itself. I'd probably be miserable if I was playing any way other than casually given I despise the hob slaves and want to max out on bull engines
>>
>>98573797
I feel the same way. I think all the characters were really well done, both centaur variants are great, I even like the taurus statue which many don't seem to.
But other parts of the range I don't really care for. I hate all varieties of hobgrots, I don't like the artillery, the bullbot is alright, the flamethrower ranged guys are alright but I HATE the """blunderbuss"""" design they went with.
The normal infernal cohort though...
Man I want to like them, and I actually do really like their bodies. The sashes work well, and I like the scalemail. But man I do not like the fucking pokeball they slapped on all the weapons, I don't like the hats either. Femchorfs I'm not opposed to in theory but I don't like the execution. I've said it before but if you're going to do dwarfs without beards you have to give them braids instead. Speaking of beards, I think they should've been bigger in general. The smaller tighter ones are probably closer to what assyrian styles beards would've actually looked like, but I prefer the big bushy classic look.

The stereotypical "look" that we mostly associate with the region in antiquity is the neo-assyrian and neo-babylonian one. Probably because that's what we're in the west culturally more knowledgeable about because of interactions between those empires and the israelites in the bible. Classic sumerian for example is pretty different in terms of aesthetics and stuff, which is not surprise since it's like two thousand years earlier.
I don't know enough about the two to say whether or not they're more assyrian or babylonian (and neither does gw in all likelihood), I just default to [neo-]assyrian because it's easier to type lol. Mesopotamian is also probably a bit too broad, covers a timespan of almost 4000 years if we start from uruk to the achaemenid conquest. Chorf aesthetics seem pretty clearly based on the later periods.

All warhammer games are pretty mediocre in terms of rules, where the models and their 'vibes' are what make it actually fun. If your local store has unpainted terrain and shit vibes, no game will be fun. But AOS is the most fun warhammer game in terms of pickup and play. If you can have a dedicated group of players, Necromunda or Blood Bowl are more fun. But that's a big 'if'.
>>
>>98573847
I dont really have much complaints with the weapons but I do agree that the soul gems would have been better if they just fully commited and wreathed them with flames, the only reason why I can imagine why they DIDNT do that, is because its probably flimsy and a pain in the ass to sculpt, and because fyreslayers kinda already have the braizer design cooked into their axes.

Seriously, a lot of stores don't seem to fully understand what competing with online marketplaces entails. The best ways to survive as a business are to either be the cheapest, the highest quality, the best value for money, or the most convenient. If you're selling the same exact product as all your competition, you're all going to have the same quality goods, and value for money becomes the same thing as cheapest. And since you're selling a luxury good, there is literally no way you can compete with the internet in terms of convenience, so your only real choice is to sell for below what the online average is, which is GW's price in this case.
Sure you can make up for some of that with having a good community or atmosphere or whatever, but it only works up to a certain point.

We don't know exactly how the lore will work, but based on the latest rumours it's basically a case of dispossessed leaving the cities of sigmar to reclaim their lost holds with the aid of fyreslayers. The new army will be heavily based on the different ancestor gods. So fyreslayers will still do their thing with ur gold and resurrecting grimnir etc, but they will be one part of the army, the 'grimnir wing' so to speak. Fighting alongside, for example, the 'grungni wing' which is all the engineer shit.
At least that's the speculation based in current rumours. But fyreslayers will keep existing as a subfaction within this larger new dwarf army for sure.

Not my thing but it's probably a prescient move to use Skaven get TWW/Vermintide fans (who have significant populations of Skavensexual furries) on board AoS, by using their favorite faction and few if any AoS exclusive elements. Getting them to grudgingly admit they like something AoS related is the first step to getting them to not be whiny babies all the time.

Of course, whether an infusion of vidya secondary furries is a good thing for the game is a much more debatable topic.

Random art inspiration. If I have something on the backlog and see a colour combo I like I'll just make a note of it.
Moonclan with green hoods and earthy robes seems neat! I saw a mushroom like that blood producing one that was white with amber liquid, so I'll incorporate those colours too like heroes having yellow hoods.
If I'm stumped I'll use this with a prevailing colour. Lock down what I prefer and see what comes up
https://colormind.io/
I'm not an autistic coherencyfag though, I'll paint a spearhead in one scheme and maybe work one a regiment in another. I'll have armies that are a little hodgepodge but whatever, I mostly play spearhead or escalation league PtG kinda games

Depends on your expectations and experiences.

Modern aos to me is more like a really big board game or a skirmish game with expanded unit size and no alternating activations.

It doesn't really focus on making armies that fit the classic fantasy mold, even for things like cities of sigmar, ossiarch boner reapers or helsmiths you won't see a mixed arms list have much benefit.

The game is also missing morale or a psychological aspect, which is a core tenant of a wargame for me.

So aos is pretty unique, but I sincerely believe spearhead accomplishes everything the bigger game does better in every way but scale of battle. I would even argue that spearhead provides more choice in list building because you'll get 3 or 4 choices of armies while most books really only push you in one direction with an illusion of choice.

There are better wargames and better skirmish games out there, but aos is unique and the models are usually it's biggest selling point.

I would not advise buying into this game for its rules even if you love everything about it currently. Gw is factually changing armies chaotically from the ground up every 3 years and not in a good way, and even making models illegal for matched play within the scope of 5 years, for their poster boy faction even.
>>
>>98576579
I don't doubt they're selling well, I'm just saying their current stock status doesn't mean anything without more info

>>
>>98576578
Anon, that guy is shitposting. Don't take him seriously.
Same rumourmongers who have talked about the changes in 5th edition in the first place confirmed no factions or models are getting deleted.
Plus, even if there were plans for that, nighthaunt is just an army of ghosts. Pretty classic fantasy stuff. Nothing to fear on that front.
Anyway, I've heard both nighthaunt spearheads are pretty good.
>>
>Alchemite Warforger gone from the webstore alongside
Bruh are we getting another Spearhead already
>>
>>98576594
>no alternating activations.
This is less of an issue because the game already has enough to keep both people at a table on each others toes no matter whose round it is, and it doesnt have the gotchyas that people claim 40k has.

gw has never released that data for anything they do and you damn well know that. so unless YOU have evidence otherwise, it is reasonable to assume that they made a standard typical amount for an army release, same as any other army for any other game.
>>
>>98576976
That one rumour engine with the weird rocky terrain is supposedly part of some flying magic boat thing (throne of power?)
There's supposed to be one new fyreslayer unit that's a character with a big droth. Kind of like jorvan kreel I guess but obviously with a way bigger pet.
Uhhh I think there was something about how their heavy infantry will be tied to valaya.
There was also a new guy on tga describing some of the new stuff but I don't think he's been corroborated by the major leakers. He was saying some stuff about scouts and pistols or some shit.
But yeah lately rumour engines seem to have a very quick turnover rate so we're probably getting close to a reveal show. Late september if I had to guess.

I had a weird idea : what if AoS was a game-within-game for 40k ? Imagine that the Imperium design and massively sell AoS as a propaganda tool for human teenagers and kids : Sigmar is meant to be an alternate version of the Emperor and Stormcast are intended to represent Space Marines with the whole "forged in lightning" thing being a way to depict gene modification in a way that superstitious children can understand; the game also teach them to hate Xenos (Orruks, Aeldari...) and of course Chaos

It's genuinely really disappointing to me. I like the new cities models for the most part (the cannon is my favourite artillery piece GW has done) but it's just extremely annoying when they make fluff that the models completely contradict. It feels like they listened too much to complaints about AOS not having a 'human' faction and got lost in the sauce. There should be literally no reason a dawnbringer crusade isn't a mixed array of all races. Instead it's 'humans and their pet ogres/gargants'. You can have a giant human, but not a short human.
