I haven't read it fully yet but it did establish some stuff, like Jace being literally fractured into many selves with the Theorist being the one in charge, but other 'parts' of him are still around in the Echoverse. The Theorist in particular is his desperate need to fix things, and the Theorist basically carved pieces of himself out, so the 'other' dissenting Jaces are basically just not in power. The guide is also narrated by a Jace kept in a 'memory-prison' in Hexhaven, the Jace that's the most honest about himself apparently. Hexhaven has founding sphinxes instead of dragons, too.

It is a shallow approximation of actual Magic and although initially it seems "helpful" to teach new people how to play, it actually does a poor job of this beyond the basics as it takes actions and makes assumptions for you (yes, there is a full control option which sometimes will accomplish what you want, sometimes it won't). Since it automates phases and cleanup you never actually learn how they work and how different cards / interactions can alter them fully. It is designed from the top down to rob you of as much money as possible. The vast majority of the playerbase are F2P'ers who just do the bare minimum to do their dailies / weeklys so they can occasionally build up enough to do a draft. The other 1% is the whales, who rope constantly in BO3s all day long. What a great experience! Stay as far away from it as you fucking can.

I remember how pissed I personally was when I found out my Portal 2 cards couldn't be used in tournaments unless they were (re)printed in a legal set. Using white borders for Starter, and choosing cards that were in the base set anyway, streamlined the process and worked to minimize confusion/disappointment.Also, P3K was never intended for the American market. IIRC the only English cards in circulation were the ones dropped into Australia.

When I want to play, I enter a booster draft, win, then sell my winnings back to the shop for store credit to fund my next draft. I usually play for free and give all the cards the store won't buy to whatever kids are around. That's the only satisfactory way for me to engage with the game anymore. I have played arena, it's fast, but you should know that it is rigged. They modify your land draws so no one wins or loses too much. They often fail to correctly program new mechanics as well. I've caught arena breaking the rules of mtg more than once. It's just not the same game, and you can't rely on consistent mechanics.
