POST WIP DREADNOUGHTS!!!!!!

>TQ

Define "cursed conversion" pls

This is Lord Ancient Seargei Vhatralov, of the 132nd Night Lords mixed survivalists company, code named "The Silence". He WAS a Raptor veteran captain, who after getting interned into a dread, went into a deep depression (due to "losing his wings") and barely ever wanted to fight, until an aspiring (IE: fucking insane) Night Lords tech marine got ahold of the remains of a Blood Angels "Incaendius" model dreadnought chasis. Seeing that it was equipped with a rudimentary "jump pack", he asked himself "Why should our blood thirsty red brothers get to have all the fun....?"

Once it was installed (along with the very nice set of brass chased artificer lightning claws), Lord-Brother Seargei became a MUCH happier soul (as well as a MUCH more efficient killer).....

All dreadnoughts have depression - getting killed does that to you. Though marines channel their emotions different to humans: depression becomes suicidal rage, fear becomes righteous disgust, etc.
Malcharion's depression manifests as resentment. He very much wishes he had been allowed to die and doesn't hide it
Chyron of the Lamenters believed he was the last of his chapter, and fights with suicidal fury because he no longer wishes to live
Neither does the Anchorite.

I'm at an impasse. I've got the original Age of Darkness box that I've been slowly building, but I'm not sure what to paint them as. Ideally I'd really like to be able to use the models in normal 40k as well, but my chapter in that game is Space Wolves, who just so happen to have a different paint scheme in HH.

Is anyone going to get butthurt if I just paint my HH minis in the modern baby blue color scheme even if it's not 'canon'? Or should I stick to one of the traditional color schemes and give up on using the army in 40k games?
>>
I wonder if now that the Razorback is dead in 40k, GW is going to retcon it for 30k, like they did with the Predator Annihilator (originally also a M36+ STC)

They only need to reuse the tarantula turrets.
>>
>>98586313
Do you plan to use the beakies as intercessors or something?
Baby blue SW is not kosher for the HH, and neither is the rest of their paint scheme.

You could say that the HH minis are part of the returned lost 13th company. There's lore for that in 40k (see Ashes of Prospero)

As a rivet counter it makes me mad that GW failed to properly name their own designs, out of incompetence or bias.

The one in your pic should be the base Deimos Whirlwind, as the launcher it's clearly the same as the 2nd ed. metal model.
The new Whirlwind is an update of the Mars RT design. Cool, but an unnecesary release.
The real Hyperios turret from FW looks completely different. Although not like a SAM launcher at all.
The Orias looks like a Cold War era SAM, so it should have been the AA missile turret.

I like the Russ fluff snippets from RT and Space Marine, the man had a moderate position on the Squat Question but specifically:

>There shall come a time far from now when our chapter [LEGION] itself is dying, even as I now am dying and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children I shall listen for your call from whatever realms of death hold me, and come I shall no matter what laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the wolftime.

They should have kept it be a mythological "dead king actually asleep in the mountain". Him dying surrounded by his sons and making an inviolable death oath to return from death is much cooler than Le Mans visiting the Eye of Terror for a packet of Newports and never returning.

not sure there's a niche for non-assault vehicle Razorbacks or a good reason they'd have it but Rhinos don't

as a conveyance for small elite units they're never going to be up to much even if they get Predator levels of armour, you'd still be better off even in small games taking a LR and a squad twice the size unless the board is flooded with objectives to hold, and even then, if it's flooded just run your tacticals forward for the same cost, you'll get more VP

if it had a special Reaction to defend units that disembarked that turn, or could participate in the volley attacks of nearby units, yes, otherwise no, it's just a Tarantula you have to find busy work for, in many ways worse than having a Rhino + a Tarantula + a small veteran squad even if it worked out cheaper

>>98586757

>That was because the 40k version was already like that before.
Nothing stopped FW from making their own Razorback entry. They did with the multi-melta version and that too had reduced capacity all the while in 30k a Rhino could mount a multi-melta without losing capacity. Likewise FW could've let SA Russes keep their sponsons and GW could've kept 30k Predator sponsons optional. It's pointless to try and find any rhyme or reason.

> It's pointless to try and find any rhyme or reason.
So 30k razorbacks using tarantula turrets could have the same capacity as Rhinos
>>
>>98587348
You can argue that FW HB and lascannon Razorbacks would have reduced capacity, since they were just alternative models for the codex units, but the multi-melta variant had its own rules in FW books, and used the MM turret from the MM tarantula. Yet FW saw no reason to make the rules any different. Why would GW?

Unfortunately we can't build Predators without sponsons anymore, since the kit doesn't allow it. 40k Predator can always just have Rhino doors, but 30k only comes with the sponson mount sides with no options unless you mix it with another kit, like Vindicator or Rhino (leaving you with another tank with mandatory sponsons now).

>>
>>98587384
They should tho. You still have to have the internal bearings and motors for the turret mechanism that would normally be in the base of the Tarantula. That means reducing the headroom internally to around the top of the side door, at least in that circular area beneath the rotation ring. Then you want stabilisation - at the bare minimum struts connecting that ring to the side walls internally. Unlike a Tarantula it isn't expected to sit somewhere expendably and be forgotten when it runs dry, so you have spare capacity for ammo. Then you have a fridge-sized machine that stops the ai of the otherwise unmodified Tarantula from taking over the tank and driving away to set up Tarantulatown. But the main thing is that lower headroom in that position means entering and leaving becomes more difficult for fully armoured marines because it effectively reduces all doors. For the same reason you might get twenty terminators into a Land Raider but you don't try - the space is there, but it's not ergonomically useful.

Besides which if you want to run a full squad in one you'd just take Blackshields roboboys. 9/10 ain't bad.

>schizoposting Visions art

This happens every time there's an armour mark argument

Visions isn't an Osprey Men-At-Arms book for the heresy. They included all kinds of disparate heresy related art. On that note that Vengeful Spirit artwork is from the 4th edition rulebook so finding it's description of the confrontation between Emps and Horus is your best bet for figuring out who's repping with the emperor (I can't check for you I don't have my copy at hand)

Trying to link them with the custodes model line or modern heresy marine colours is a hiding to nothing imo. They could be Custodes, or stylised depictions of marines or Salamander still depicted as black (armoured) or something else. Remember that until a year before this was drawn Heresy Thousand Sons still fought under their Wumbo insignia
>>
>>98587512
>The guys next to BIg E in the Adrian Smith arent aren't SoH, or IF, or BA.
Theyre clearly not custodes either, so I guess by process of elimination they must be SA, because thats how this logic works right?

Theyre space marines dressed like heresy designs for space marines, the size of space marines, and armed like space marines. Maybe they were intended to be some sort of loyalist SOH remnant, maybe they were intended to be the emperors strike team wearing bespoke armor, who the fuck knows.
>>
>>98587840
Do we even know if the piece depicting Horus and Emperor is lore accurate, rather than a stylized visualization of the event? God knows we have such things in real life too.
>>
>>98587904
>rather than a stylized visualization of the event?
Every single piece of art in all of 40k and 30k is a stylization according to Blanche.
>>
>>98587931
Blanche also said the classic image of the Emperor on his Throne is a fake shown to pilgrims, but nobody is permitted to see it as no living person is permitted beyond the Eternity Gate.
>>
>>98587952
The real Emperor is behind the Eternity Gate. The fake Emperor shown to pilgrims is in some side room that the pilgrims are taken to by a back way or something so they don't know they're not entering the actual throne room. The palace is a twisting labyrinth the size of a mountain range and no one can tell.

>>
>>98588104
>Nobody at my store wants to play against my army anymore even though I don’t win
Well what's your army like?
>>
>>98588104
The issue with custodes is that they require very specific units in large numbers to really "play against" because theyre essentially a monolist in terms of "things you have to deal with".
Theyre all melee elites, theyre all super tough t5 2+ armor EW(1) etc.

This is probably what people dont find fun, that theyre not so much "playing a game" as "building against custodes", because a good 90% of the marine roster may as well not exist in the matchup because it serves no purpose and is never taken.

it doesent matter that you dont win, the gameplay just isnt very interesting or fun because the goal is to avoid engaging with your faction and simply beat you on pts/shoot you with melta till you die.

The solution is allies. Either sisters or the new cohorts of SA. They give you a wider armor which is proably overall stronger, but one that gives the opponent more things to play against, so they dont constantly feel "oh most of my list/collection is useless".
>>
>>98588104
Damn, if only custodes had a sister army that wasn't
>named hq
>generic hq
>generic unit
>apc
>>
>>98588213
Case in point. I have a pretty cool (imo) unit of tactical veterans with volkite chargers. I am never taking it vs custodes.
I am currently building some assault marines. I am never taking them vs custodes.
I like destroyers, I am never taking them vs custodes.
I like to run a terror squad, I am never taking it vs custodes.
I might want to run bikes (the normal sort), but not vs custodes.
I might want to run contekar, but never vs custodes.

Vs custodes I am taking cheap scoring units which will simply walk off the objective when custodes get close, and lots of AP2 shooting, maybe some particularly good status weapons. Thats it. There is nothing else I can reasonably do into that army by its very nature. This is not very fun. This is the case because EVERYTHING in the custodes list is a hyper efficient elite melee unit that is designed to fight (and requires to be fought) elite melee units from the marine list (and even then custodes are often favored so its not really a path you should be pursuing).

I think on some level custodes are sort of poorly designed/run into the same issues as WoC in fantasy (in the editions where theyre good) but even more extreme. Theyre so good at what they do that theres no point trying to play their game because you wont win or come close. So you simply have to avoid having them do their thing, which isnt fun for you most of the time (evasive play is often based around denial of action/deterministic outcomes) and isnt fun for your opponent (since your entire gameplan is about making sure they dont get to do what their army is supposed to do
>>
>>98588213
>Theyre all melee elites, theyre all super tough t5 2+ armor EW(1) etc.
I can only think of disintegrator spam (yuck), or the obvious Double Plasma Dread. Hey too bad plasma is S6 in safe mode lol haha.
What else is good for shooting at them?
>>
>>98588256
And to continue with the comparison because while no one here cares, I do think its very apt.

In 8th edition fantasy the basic chaos warrior was very analogous to the custodian guard, they were a core unit for the army, very expensive, and just about the most elite and all round powerful melee infantry in the game. This was very cool and very thematic for what chaos warriors are. It also kind of sucked balance wise in some ways.

Because chaos warriors were so powerful, because they would turn any other infantry in the game with the exception of some elf units (swordsmasters) or full on magic buffed deathstars, into puree in a single round of combat, people just wouldnt bother bringing those units. If you knew you were playing vs WoC you brought lots of cheap expendables and a bunch of AP shooting, maybe some evasive cav. Because there was no point trying to "play their game".

You wouldnt fight their chaos lord or demon prince in combat because they would win, so you didnt bring cool characters, so there was no interesting character combat or memorable duels, you simply brought chumps to support your army and be cheap so it didnt matter when they died.
In other words: Because it wasnt worth playing the chaos warriors game, neither player got to really "play the game" as much. Which kinda blew.

>>98588269
Disintigrator spam is actually terrible into custodes because its D2 which gets halved to D1, you want either naturally D1 plasma (and drown them in saves) or D3+ (melta and laser destroyers).

>safe mode
Who cares, plasma is great into custodes, they have terrible ward saves. Besides, youre both fishing for breaches and firing overload every time anyways.

Plasma, seekers, rapiers, melta.
>>
>>98588226
Anon thats already enough to give custodes something less elite and more fragile, which in turn gives more units in the other guys roster a thing to do.
>>
>>98588256
>Case in point. I have a pretty cool (imo) unit of tactical veterans with volkite chargers. I am never taking it vs custodes.
>I like destroyers, I am never taking them vs custodes.
Aren't these the units to use against them, if at all? Heavily emphasizing the "if at all" bit. Spammable AP2 (disintegrators), spammable S5 (volkite). Yeah ik there's no spammable S5 AP2...but there shouldn't be or else everyone would suffer lol.
Custodians aren't immune to rad phage, I think? I was hoping you could take specifically those squads, anon. Sad if true.
>>
>>98588301
Oh yeah I wasn't looking for D2, just a means to bypass their 2+ save, their biggest protection.
>>
>>98588324
Talons need more units that aren't custodes, a single squad of sisters with 4 weapon options isn't it. GW shouldn't have removed their units in 3.0 and separated them in 2.0, this joins the list of somewhat working things that have been "fixed" by GW into being broken.
>>
>>98588344
The destroyers and vets both have volkite, which is better into softer targets than "terminator equivalent".

Theyre not immune to phage, but the rad missiles or grenades are Ap3.

The disintigrators veterans get are also Ap3, not Ap2. For that you need iirc command squad, and even then the S5 Ap2 1 shot guns are less than idea, because they overload and because theyre D2, which halves into custodes. Id rather take plasma.

Realizing my list is kinda soulless. I wrote it up based on my collection and I'm honestly not sure what my gameplan should even be.

Primary Detachment
Warsmith, Centurion, Siege Breaker
1x Despoiler, 1x Tactical
2x Rhinos

Support Detachment
1x Heavy Support with Autocannons (10 man)
1x Iron Havocs with Missile Launchers (5 man)

Armored Support Detachment
2x Scorpius

Storm Battery Detachment
2x Quad Mortars
2x Vindicators

Hammer of Olympia Detachment
1x Breachers (10 man)
1x Tyrant Siege Terminators (10 man)
1x Land Raider Carrier
1x Tarantula Battery (2 heavy bolter turrets)

Any suggestions on making this be more coherent of an army would be appreciated.

Skaven have/had a lot of very mechanically unique tools which have a lot of variance and agency, their artillery and special weapons for example often ended up being the game deciders one way or the other.

Skavenslaves arent glamorous, but they basically work like zombies, a big brick of (in 8e) basically unbreakable dudes you put between your warp lightning cannon and whatever seeks to concave its anus. So yes, it was literally just tarpitting. Melee skaven wasnt really ever much of a thing, their best melee units (stormvermin) werent very good and rat ogres were also kinda mediocre

The new scoring system is gamey, but it prevents players castling up and static shooting lines. IMO it should be linked to each mission.

The other stuff you mention doesn't really apply to HH:AoD 3.0, at least yet. Maybe the consuls with forced loadlouts, though
>>
>>98591440
I am not a game designer, nor do I have an idea of how a perfect scoring system would look like. But if you ask me, if casteling is worse, then line spam, I think I would say that both are very bad. And of the two I dislike the line stuff more. Especialy in how bad venguard is (outside of ZM, where venguard is crazy) and how crippled some units are for not having line. Again I am not a designer, I don't know how to design games, but I think that the idea of "you have to take line packge" or you will lose is not good. I also don't like the gamines, but that is a personal taste thing. There are a ton of games more gamey then HH 3.0 and people like it.

"Line spam" isnt just not an issue, its downright desirable.

You WANT people to have to (or feel like they should) bring lots of basic troops and be rewarded for it, because the basic troops are the most interactable units in the game, everything can go into them and do its thing with very few exceptions (laser vindicators). If every SA and Marine player were compelled at gunpoint to bring 10 squads of line infantry every game the state of the game would improve.

The current issue is simply "speed", and how scoring is too quick for the opponent to do anything about, which can lead to deterministic lockouts very quickly. The solution is simply moving the victory phase from end of turn to start of turn. You score at the start (after nuncio voxes), boom. Line is still important, but theres now more of a dynamic between taking ground and actually holding it, and moving off objectives to deny vanguard is now a bigger consideration. It would add tactical depth, help mitigate the early shutouts and also help bring the numerical effectiveness of line down a little.

Also, on the topic of vanguard. I think it has a "marketing issue". Vanguard is a crazy strong rule and a massive benefit, its just not line or line equivalent or line replacement in a true sense. It is an alternative scoring method for units that want to be aggressive, this doesent mean those aggressive units (which tend to be powerful elites) should now be "as good at getting points" as tactical marines, that would be terrible design and undermine the very point of having line and basic scoring troops. Vanguard is great, its "free points" under the right conditions, and requires your opponent to play carefully to deny them. Its issue is simply that the counterplay is a bit too "free" (reactions still matter obviously, but it lacks the "tactical element" of losing an objective, because you dont care who holds it past your turn)

I don't know man. People want to play their all bike, all tank, dreadnought formation, just terminator lists etc Forcing them to "just take tacticals" just doesn't feel right. As venguard goes it would be nice, if it was true that all "elite" killer units had it. But somehow GW decided that that there are better elite killer units like SW or SoH terminators, and then there is DA Cenobiums or Golden Keshig that have no venguard, line or even some comperable rule instead of line/venguard. It creates another feels bad moment, even before you play the game.
>>

>. People want to play their all bike, all tank, dreadnought formation, just terminator lists etc
And they can, they simply wont win as much. Which is fine. The strength of a terminator list is that it kills shit and doesent die, it shouldnt get to score as well as a normal army.

>Not all elite melee units have vanguard, but all* vanguard units are elite melee units, or at least "killy units".
Also, on that topic. "why dont all of them have it"? Because its an additional lever of unit balance.

Centurion command squad are a more cost efficient melee beatstick than veterans, but they lack vanguard.
Night furies are a more cost efficient melee unit than night raptors, but they lack vanguard.
Cenobium are incredibly cost efficient, but they once again lack vanguard.

Vanguard, or the lack thereof, is a way to remove or add power to a unit without making it killier or necessarily changing the points in ways that could lead to other consequences. On average, and there will obviously be some exceptions, units with vanguard are worse at fighting than their "vanguardless" equivalents, which is fair, they get to have the chance to score extra points (potentially game-winning stuff), but in return they wont win 1v1 against similar units for the same cost, because some of their "power budget" was spent elsewhere.

The biggest notable exception to this trend are firedrakes, but theyre a salamander unit and those just tend to be overtuned in general.

And here lies the crux of the "made to be like w40k" problem. I don't think that every space marine army should be 3xtacticals, 1xcenturions, 2x[your elite legion unit], jump pack unit with claws+a pretor with the obligatory hammer etc. Line and the forcing of those tacticals makes lists look like clones of each other. HH, in contrast to w40k, should not be the "we play different coloured ultramarines" games. It should, and I think it was for a long time, the game of theme lists. Those are , or rather were, the most fun things about HH. In w40k you can't play a full terminator company, or a full bike list, or just tanks, but in HH you could. Without needing to ask your opponent to dumb down their lists, or being allowed to play an illegal list. A full jump pack list for BAs is just cool. It fits the legion fantasy, and it looks cool on the table.
There is also another problem with the line package. For some legions, the legion fantasy is about runing a lot of tactical marines or tactical looking marines. Those legions suddenly get a huge buff, because they can eat and have a cake, as their fantasy also is the power option. And again I do not think that tank player should be punished for wanting to play a tank army, and he definitly should not be made to play in to armies that are powerful just because core rules say so.

Why can't a despoiler focused DA or IW army be good? At some point seeing the same weapon platforms spamed, tactical package etc just gets boring. Worse, some legions do it better then others, so if you pick the "wrong" one you are litteraly playing a worse list then someone else. I like a lot what GW did with shattered legions, if anything list building game play should be more like that. More unit agnostic and game play/theme focused .

And I understand that some armies will be more powerful and some will be less, maybe even a gimik, like an all flyers list or all speeders/recon army.
>>
>>98592115
>In w40k you can't play a full terminator company, or a full bike list
But you can. 40k literally allows and encourages dumb gimmick lists that disregard proper composition in favor of spamming your niche elite you hyperbuff.
>>
Mind if I vent for a minute?

GW is such a fucking retarded company, holy shit. They consistently make the dumbest fucking decisions and spit in the face of their fanbase in order to pander to potential new markets who either don't care or will migrate to something else once the novelty wears off.

We could be seeing quality releases for sensible prices and their sales would still be incredibly high.
>>
How scummy of me would it be to by two Custodes boxes and sell the units individually?
>>
>>98592065
Okey, but then why do Golden Keshig have no venguard. They have "They are a venguard strike unit leading WS brotherhood strikes" writen in their lore.

I also can't agree with the "venguard less units are better fighters" then units with venguard. SoH terminators or SW terminators are not worse fighters, then knight cenobiums and much better then Golden Keshig, and they have venguard. In fact they are both better, if not one on the best kill units in the game.
>>
>>98592132
custodesfags are paypigs so do it
>>
>>98592132
I am not sure if you would make much money with the biker units. Unless you know things about the custodes codex, that regular mortals do not know. I know that the people that bought the previous big boxes with the dreads are still siting on the hero and infantry, struggling to sell them, same way stores do. But who knows, maybe in your area it ain't the same. Or you know that the FW bikes will be busted once the custodes book drops, and people are going to be killing each other for a squad or two of them.
>>
>>98592132
You either already own two or are way too late for this to matter.
Custodes players deserve it either way.
>>
>>98592137
>SoH terminators or SW terminators are not worse fighters, then knight cenobiums and much better then Golden Kesh
Anon, you do realize those are "different units" right? Justaerin are (individually) some of the most elite terminators in the game. But theyre also the most expensive, theyre far pricier than other terminators or even command squads and equivalent.

Keshig arent even terminators, theyre jetbikes, youre comparing a unit whos point is their movement 18 or something and terminators, thats ridiculous. There is no "normal" equivalent to compare keshig to, especially one with vanguard, because theyre an incredibly unique example of offensive jetbike cav.
>>
>>98591761
Or - and bear with me this is just a mad idea I had in a psychedelic dream last night - we could just drop the whole faggoty wanky Sportsball scoring bullshit altogether and go back to having missions that play more like abstractions of actual military operations where objectives are physical things on the tabletop that you either control or don't at any given moment in time, which is both far more intuitive, permits players to use actual tactics to outplay their opponent, and requires you to actually think ahead and consider the state of the board multiple turns into the future of the game rather than just remembering what faggy keywords to mash together.

You keep trying to fix something that's not fixable because the reason people hate it is one you can't change, only mitigate to a still unsatisfactory degree.
>>
>>98592115
>Line and the forcing of those tacticals makes lists look like clones of each other
The basic units of the game SHOULD be in nearly ever marine list, sorry anon. Thats just the truth. If someone wants to run a gimmicky skew list like "whoops all terminators" they are doing an abnormal thing, it should not be the norm. You CAN do it, the rules actually make "whoops all X" lists very easy to do, but it doesent need to be encouraged or rewarded. ]

>A full jump pack list for BAs is just cool. It fits the legion fantasy, and it looks cool on the table.
And you can do that.

>40k
Is about gimmick lists. Its about a guy bringing nothing but 30 terminators because he runs seven characters who all buff terminators. The entire point of rewarding balanced lists and proper army composition is so you dont end up as 40k.

>And again I do not think that tank player should be punished for wanting to play a tank army
The reward of a tank army is having a lot of tanks. A tank is not an equivalent power unit to some tactical marines or despoilers, it is a stronger combat force. The benefit of running lots of tanks is that you have lots of tanks and those things are good at fighting and killing things while not dying (and in large numbers especially they require an entirely tailored list or they basically cant be interacted with).

>Why can't a despoiler focused DA or IW army be good?
I dont know, why can it not apparently?

>Worse, some legions do it better then others
No legion is particularly better or worse at a "proper" force in 3e.
>>
>>98592168
>where objectives are physical things on the tabletop that you either control or don't at any given moment in time
So scoring, you are describing scoring objectives. You just want missions to define what each objective is instead of having "objectives A, B and C".
>>
>>98592168
Anon, what do you think "abstraction" is?

The current system is an abstraction, objectives are not literally magical circles dirt, they represent "something" in the world which is beight fought over and is likely the reason for the battle in the first place. What that "something" is is undefined because its an abstraction, and because the missions provide a generic basis/mechanical framework rather than concrete narrative framing. They could be supply depots, server racks, archaeotech caches or whatever else you decide is worth having a fight over. Once again, the system is abstract, it is a mechanical framework to represent something more granular and definite in universe.

he does say a lot of "oh its all legends which is why its different to X" which is a cop out answer but eh i'm fine with it because I don't care for BL, just the black books

Yeah, I think we’re seeing the start of resin going the way of metal for GW. If I remember right, Big Angron was the last resin product GW put out for Heresy or Titanicus.
>>
>>98592412
maybe it was a case of just wanting to get it finished? the book series was what, 20yrs old at that point?
>>
>>98592414
GW is selling tons of new metal nowadays because of ToW
>>
>>98592419
Then why turn a single book story into 3 with lots of filler and self-indulgence?

Nah, he wanted the $$$ and to push his next inquisitoin book. Which is understandable, but not at the cost of fucking with several foundational cornerstones of Space Marine lore.

The next time you look at a 40k terminator, remember that the stone Crux Terminatus is about bullshit that never happened because Abnett wanted to pay homage to the Dornian heresy fanfiction. Thanks Abnett!

They didnt have the deathmasks, at least going by Gws example models. Afaik the masks were a later thing to commemorate sangys dying like a dog.
>>
>>98592358
The sanguinary guard face masks already were a thing. Their death masks tradition pre-dates 40k and the HH itself by a good margin.
Not all sanguinary guard wore them though, some used regular helmets. And anybody can lose their helmet or have it compromised in some other way during a battle.
>>
>>98592454
When you say "regular helmets" what would that entail exactly? Just artificer mkIV?
>>
>>98592358
Both. But more leaning into normal helmets, they weren't yet as morbid as they became later.

What do you mean? If not them, who?
>>
I wish Vanguard worked also when you make a unit fall back. For example when shooting a unit, a vanguard unit has to necessarily kill every single model. Let a fall back also score. At least at an "X-1 min. 1" effectiveness.

Same when Vanguard units get close to an objective, event players simply move their scoring unit out of the objective's range. Let Vanguard (X) score X-1 (down to 1) VP if all enemy units are moved away from an enemy-controlled objective when your Vanguard unit is within 12" of said objective.

The wording is less convoluted than the ai-sus verbose found in the actual book x.x

On a similar note, it's very noticeable when your units aren't benefitting from their trait. Like, Emperor's Children HSS won't be benefitting from their trait, only in niche cases - they're essentially Grey Legion most of the time.

Not that you can't or shouldn't use EC HSS; they have Sunkillers because EC excel at everything. You'll just have to accept your focus is elsewhere, and this is true for every legion

And yet...

EC use guns, IF do melee. You do not need (or even necessarily want) to make a list entirely focussed on minmaxxing your legion trait, this is quite important to understand. The legion trait does not and should not define your army, it is flavoring on an existing meal.

Only Dante has a death mask of Sangy. All the others are just masks of fallen battle-brothers. Sanguinary Guard ones are of the previous wearer. Angel's Tears are suppose to have death masks, but I guess all the wearers died in a wind tunnel while sucking off a horse.

Yes. Any horus heresy side character who isn't ever mentioned in 40k is the very definition of a glup shitto.

Non-glup shittos:
Emperor, Malcador, all Primarchs, Abaddon, Kharn, Typhus, Ahriman, Lucius, Fabius Bile, Bjorn, Constantin Valdor. That's about it.

Everyone else is the gluppest of shittos. The entire Horus Heresy book series is them glupping around and shittoing everywhere until they're all fucking dead and never mentioned again outside of their containment spin-off series.

True...but it does feel like you are "missing out".
Like, DG could totally use Assault Marines to exploit the opportunities created by their HSS. It'll be a balanced army. Those Assault Marines will simply not benefit from their trait as much.

>True...but it does feel like you are "missing out".
Does it? I sure dont feel that way.

Sure, if you look at things in a vacuum, and you compare unit to unit, then some legions feel like they lose out. "its not fair, the imperial fist player gets a bonus to his tacticals and I dont". But units dont exist in this void, they exist as part of lists. And in THAT light? Things are far more balanced.

"his list gets bonuses to X units, mine to Y"

Both X and Y units are still generally worth running in both lists, because they do tactical things that you need in your army. Your legion simply focusses (not exclusively, but as "slightly better at it than others") in one area while others in others.

Hell, you know those "things that dont matter"? Often they do. The WE tacticals getting +1A on the charge is big, because it means that in that situation where the both of you brought balanced and well rounded lists you have the tactical flexibility to try and bully someone elses tacticals with a charge.
The DG ability to move and shoot doesent confer much to the assault marines themselves, but it does mean that they can better bring certain big guns to support them, or which provide openings for the assault marines to exploit.

Armies are not units fighting 1v1, they are layers of interactions and synergies.
