There's a box of tacs on my flgs wall but I already have 4 unbuilt. I think it's gonna be useful to just horde them as unbuilt because then they're undifferentiated bits instead of locked into something. That and I have a ton of shit to paint.

Absolute best case scenario is that they'll start mandating the figures are assembled and painted in-store like that dickhead at the Bath shop in the UK demands. More likely they'll pull some bullshit like charging hero-unit prices for a standard one or requiring Warhammer+ or something.

Hey everyone it's once again time for the collage anchor posts.
This month's theme was "Defeated foes/trophies" and was left to your own interpretation.
I'll try to post an anchor every thread but if you can't spot me write"here is my August collage submission" and it'll be way easier to find you in the archive.

Rough. Nids drew Tempting Target and Engage on All fronts, both of which are impossible to score at this boardstate. They scored 8 on primary and 3 for Overwhelming Force since they did kill the single remaining model that was on their expansion objective, bringing them to 42. Taking out 2 Immolators and 1 Castigator is nice, but they're still heavily outnumbered.

SoB proceeded to kill every single model down to the last Exocrine hiding in the corner. They control every objective. They drew Tempting Target and Behind Enemy Lines, which both scored right away. 13 Primary and 10 Secondary brings them to 68.

So the nids not only lost twice in a row, but they lost by getting tabled by turn 3 both times...definitely a lesson in there. Beelining for the middle objective seems to not be the thing to do, even though you're a melee army. Mindlessly running forward may be a fun way to play nids, but effective use of cover wins games.

Also as an aside, Plunging Fire is sick. Always remember that rule. Both retributors and both Exocrines set up shop on four of the raised terrain pieces and just sat there all game. So both armies made about the same use of it and it mattered for both several times.

Notably less fun to assemble than those from only 3-ish years ago. The huge chunk of pistol grip i had to carve off whete it meets the belt was especially bad. I can kinda get the firstborn/primaris complaints if this is the type of decline in assemblage going on

it's not the same, you keep missing the issue while at the same time acknowledging that there is an issue with appealing to the chinese market

Maroon armor with a dirty steel trim, use all the bony spikes in the Chosen kit you can fit on them, make sure to know which ones are supposed to be mutated horns and which are metal.
If you want to paint em, or chaos in general. Pro Acryl has a new aluminum metallic paint line coming out later this year that’s reflective enough to tint with their new contrast paints, and it’ll look amazing for chaos trim.

It's the right move to discontinue the rest of the marine legacy tanks. It's not possesion. But it means that marines have a genetic or warp based natural tendency to bond with and follow their primarchs.
This is shown several times in the lore, usually with tragic consequences unless they snap out of it for some reason.

It also explains why Guilliman forbade Cawl from creating primaris marines out of traitor primarch geneseed, even if they seemed perfectly ok and loyal.

Depends what you mean, but none really fit. As a historical threat that killed an emperor and besieged Altdorf he can maybe be compared to the Beast, who also posed an existential threat to the imperium. Except of course that the Beast wasn't an individual.[\spoiler] I can't think of Warbosses that were comparably successful. The most unifying Ork leader in current 40k is Gazghkull Thraka, but I don't think they have much in common except both being big warbosses that drew in a big Waaagh. Finally, maybe he's a little like Klawjaw, except of course that Klawjaw is still on the galactic fringes and hasn't sieged terra.

As one of the 15 Raven Guard fans in the world I'm absolutely fucking livid over Vanguard kit having no lightning claws
>>
>>98598300

I absolutely believe the theory (not sure where I first heard it) that when GW got their first batch of player data 6m-1y after the launch of 8th edition, it showed some factions having abysmal new player retainment. Because they were really cool and attractive for newcomers, but also too hard for newbies to paint.

They can't do anything about the biggest newbie hurdle for CSM(trim/details), but making the color scheme as simple as possible is probably a concession to this. You'll never see anything but Black Legion on generic CSM boxes anymore, same way you'll never see a SM Chapter that isn't mono-color.

I meant as in an ork warboss that is very successful, but is more renowned for being actually kind of a brilliant tactician rather than a brutal monster (which, being orks, they'd still be regardless if they reach warboss status).

I thought Nazdreg would be it but then I read his lore and he seems to just go from defeat to defeat and simply knows how to recover, which isn't what Gorbad is about as Gorbad only lost once.

NTA but the original Assault Intercessor kit had them half a decade ago. It is really not a new concept.

Tactical marines didn't have much in terms of reliquaries/gubbinz, but Chaplains and Librarians often had keys with no obvious use. The implication was that they were to unlock sacred reliquaries or forbidden books and carrying them was a sign of their office.

>>
>>98598434
Also sometimes the keys can just have symbolic meaning and don't mean anything beyond that.
Hell, it could even be that some key is kept as a relic because it is a last remaining piece in existance of some great hive city to show that it ever even existed. And the marine chapter helped out in that war but ultimately the city and planet were lost or even destroyed, so they keep it as a memento and a reminder to not fuck up.

But the 120 point Battle Sister Celestial on average will leave Mortarion with just 4 wounds. Two of those squads basically have a 99% chance to kill Morty in just one turn while 3 bloodthirsters only have a 70% chance.

I use Vallejo Game Color mostly but each brand has good and bad paints. I got a dogshit wet palette from Temu but I'd prefer making one with baking sheet over wet paper towels. Vallejo has this BSL system so if you buy say the orange set, it already has all the different tones for highlights and shades included. Most brands now offer stuff in color triads so you know what acts as a highlight to what color etc.

Masterson’s Sta-Wet the GOAT for budget. I’ve been using mine over 10 years. I’ve tried out different sponges and quite like Game Envy’s palette sponge 2.0. I mix a few drops of bleach into the water my sponge absorbs and basically eliminate mold’s ability to live.

What if "Fights First" was replaced with "Parry: units in engagement range of this models unit lose the fights first ability for the phase" Opponent would still fight first with other units they charged, then the fights first gets a chance to fight before being destroyed. Plus for some reason they hate cross compatibility. Even though if they primaris scale the Rhino they will need to give the HH Version of the Rhino to Sisters just so that the Primaris Rhino doesn't dwarf the other Sister Vehicles.

It also wouldn't confuse their sales data (many call this to be the reason why they hate cross compatibility as it messes up their sales data for the different games) if they release a separate Chaos and Sister Deimos Rhino for 40K.

Vallejo or AK for good enough paints that are widely available. Buying army painter is self-sabotage.
Natural hair brushes from W&N, Raphael, Da Vinci etc. are expensive but they last way longer than synthetics. Expensive up front but once the tip has worn out you can use them for basecoating and such. You want at least one good brush for fine detail work, size 0 or 1, if you stick with the hobby.
A good wet palette is just a nice shallow box and a sponge that doesn't go moldy. Redgrass ones are good but expensive, AP sponges go bad.
I'd recommend a tamiya/olfa design knife. The blades are very small and at a different angle than your typical xacto knives and are better for this kind of work.
Make sure you have a work lamp. Daylight bulbs and ikea tertial works for starters.

like 40% AP, 30% vallejo, 25% ttc, and 5% spray cans. the citadel lidded pots drive me crazy and i refuse to buy them even if they have really useful shit like the contrast medium and technicals
a lot of the info you'll see online is out of date or from people who got a bad batch. remember that people are more inclined to say something if it sucks than if it's merely okay. I've never had an issue with bubbles in vallejo paint for example but people swear up and down that they got a bubble 6 years ago and they've sworn off it since. I want to like AP more but the pastel effect from adding white to their shit and lack of darker colors is a huge turn off if you like having vibrant models. their John Blanche masterclass line is quite good, at least the first 2 volumes that had some very nice dark colors.

>>
>>98598751
My point was to say it makes no sense to cut support for chaos vehicles because they just released Red Corsairs with a detachment for them and there are 2 renegade detachments besides that, which thematically SHOULD all be using Imperium vehicles.
Then they turn around and drop support for vehicles, insisting on daemon engines that don't fit into the theme of their brand new detachments or faction.

It doesn't make sense. It either points to different design rooms not talking to each other (likely either way) or new tracked vehicles for chaos (and maybe loyalists).

Get the Introductory set if you care about either army included, since it comes with all the stuff you need to see if you like painting. The side you don't care about can be used to practice technique. Or sold.

Otherwise, grab a Kill Team from your faction of choice, a starter brush, clippers, some tamiya extra thin, and some paints. A spray can of black primer from your local hardware store (optional). You don't need a wet palette if you're just starting out. A paper plate is fine. Google can hook you up with a list of paints you'll need for each kit since someone is bound to have asked the question already. There is an app as well (Citadel Color), its fine but designed to sell you a ton of expensive citadel paints. If you realize you don't need ALL the paints it suggests and know how to mix base colors to produce new ones (hey, elementary school art class finally paying off), its an acceptable starting point.

I think it's kind of inevitable that you'll get kiked intentionally or not when it comes to paints, but I get your fear of wasting money on supplies you end up hating.
Most paints are "about" the same price, AKA $4-6 for a 18-24 ml bottle and $20-30 for a 400 ml spray bottle. A little bit of experimentation might be needed to find what kind of paint you like, but the paints most people swear is the best for the quality vs price is two thin coats and citadel, despite how much people shit on GW their paints are usually the standard that others are compared to.

Oh yeah, something way more valuable than a wet palette that I rarely see people recommend: a headlamp/magnifier combo, the kind of thing people use when working with jewelry, watches or tiny electronics. Painting tiny details is infinitely easier when you can see what you are doing.

Bonus points if you get one that makes you look like a 40k character in your own right.
>>
>>98598894
Citadel paints are nothing special and the pots negate any advantage they have
The only reason they're so widely used is literally every single hobby shop sells them, they're so much easier to source than the next most widespread paintline

None of the brands recommended here are cheap. They're on par with some professional artist's acrylics. The latter are actually cheaper if you buy larger volumes but you're never going to go through 120ml of a single paint.

GW makes bad white/off white colors in my experience as they often permanently separate or dry out.
GW paint pots are objectively bad long term but the actual paints are decent.

Vallejo is decent, army painter and AK can also be good, it's very color/tone dependent. I hear Pro Acryl are good but don't have any myself. Would recommend just buying the colors you think you'll need for the current project assuming you're starting fresh.

Your army's main color, secondary color accent color, red, yellow, blue, black, and white would be a good start if you aren't certain. A flesh tone for faces, brown for leather, and metallic are nice conveniences but mixable.

Brushes below size 0 are pretty much exclusively for eyes. You're mainly going to be using size 0-1 if you're doing 40k scale stuff.

Wet palette is goated.

If you already paint, oils are fine, cheap acrylics are hit & miss (acrylic inks are good though), haven't played with much Gouache and watercolors.

Magnets good for vehicles and big units like Dreadnoughts
Magnets finnicky and annoying with individual people, just stick with one weapon option for those.
Saves you money if the meta changes (ie you have meltas on a Hippogriff and need to go to stubbers instead), saves you money if you don't want to buy like 100 Leman Russ models because of sponsons and main gun options.

It sucks in the moment doing it and you get superglue on your fingers but it's definitely worth it in saving money and having options, just follow someone else's method until you know what you're doing.

Imagine getting a score deducted once or twice because you fucked up a rule at a casual tournament, found out later then had it corrected, and some mentally ill troon comes after you because your name appears on a 'list of known 40k cheaters' site that just copies over any player with a ding on their bcp record.

Yes, extremely.
Look into how others have magnetized theirs and copy them. Usually it's in the pre-existing part joints (ie where an arm is meant to attach, you drill out a spot in both sides of the joint for a magnet).

Most people who ask use them for harder to do stuff like tank main guns or sponson guns so that's where most concern comes from in difficulty. You'll be alright. Just be aware that an m4 magnet is not "almost" an m3 magnet, specific size suggestions for magnets are often a requirement because of tight margins on material present in the model to have structural integrity and still look the part.
>>
>>98599346
>riptides and stuff
Absolutely. For example you'd have to be a genuine retard to build a knight without magnetizing the options.

It's because legends don't get updated and usually GW keeps their rules low to discourage people using them. The reasoning is that new players might see tons of people using a unit they can no longer buy. The answer to that is that they shouldn't have squatted it then.

The Hellhound has always been an "online only" purchase from GW, at least since they started doing online sales. It's a niche vehicle, same with the Taurox.
I can find a Hellhound online right now (US) for $58. Same with a Taurox. Most vendors don't carry them though because they're not commonly desired and not commonly sold.
You've also got to consider how GW treats markets. If you aren't in the UK, you're already second class. If you aren't in the US or Australia, you're even further down the list. If your country doesn't have GW stores, you don't even exist to them.

Why do guardfags always lose their mind when their 4+ ballistic skill tanks miss? You would think they are aware of the fact that guard is a horde army. You don't see Tyranid or Ork players having these tantrums.

Interesting. I thought it might have been a sign it was going to legends.
I didn't look too hard at online retailers in my country, the one I was purchasing from didn't have a listing , saw it was online only and went to eBay. Most eBay listings were really expensive bar one from the UK.

I think people judge hobbies based on what is made by it or comes from it perhaps. For example, one of my friends restores old cars for car shows and what not. Some of the cars he has restored could sell for pretty good money etc. Then you have people who do wood work or something. Different friend rebuilt his whole deck / porch as a hobby. I think people see those hobbies and think WOW and then like at miniature hobbies and go "eh..." It sucks but not all hobbies are made equal I guess as far as usefulness. I do like painting though.

Not to Love from Kazakhstan post but there was a survey of women that showed that the majority of them find any "male hobby" that isn't working out/hygiene/fashion, physically demanding or a way to earn money was viewed as unattractive.
Women are retarded, don't pay them any attention. Play with your army men and be happy.
>>98599562
Most stores (in person and online) only stock the "normal" GW inventory, which is everything on the GW website minus the "online only" items. That's why it's so hard to find Hellhounds or Taurox or stuff like that. You get lucky sometimes, other times not. My preferred online vendor doesn't have Taurox or Hellhounds, but another store has both.
>eBay listings were really expensive
They always are. Don't buy eBay listings unless they're sold as a bulk lot for one lump sum (that's lower than buying each model piecemeal), and then resell what you don't want out of it.
>>98599573
Like the original poster in this reply chain said, he has a hard time doing things "for fun" which is common for people; everything has to feel like it can be useful. Just do what you enjoy, if the other person doesn't understand doing things you enjoy they're not worth associating with.

Don't even care what normie women think. 90% of them are incapable of understanding creation and the creative process. The few girls that are into some sort of craft or hobby themselves will understand anon. I know girls who do jewelry, papercrafts, regular art (paint, sculpt, etc), and even landscaping (real show gardens and the like). These girls understand the creative process and appreciate it.

I work construction and have my own company. I 90% of the time any problem has to due with the wife or bitch not understanding how long things can take especially with their often high or unrealistic expectations. "What do you mean replacing a load bearing wall, remodeling the kitchen, replacing all the flooring, new paint, new (STAINED) trim, new tiled master bathroom, (while I demand the highest quality, $$$$ finishes, and change my mind ever other week) is going to take so long?!"

>>
>>98599684
My method isn't any more complex than yours, there's just something about doing it in 3d and applying perspective that people don't consider.
They love the end result of course and warm up to it once they see the model in front of them, they just never want to actually do it themselves because they're often lazy IME.

Not even the hard part of most jobs desu. That stuff gets hidden behind finishes and the mathematics these days is mostly done in software. It's the stuff you see at the end. Anyone who's really good at any finishing trade has it worked out to an art after years and years of practice, and failure. Even something as simple as laying down a fucking bead of caulk is a skill, I'm legit amazed at some guys who make perfect even simple stuff like that.

>>

They're claiming it has both Mk7 and Mk6 and yet, like you said, they didn't even showcase any of them, so there's probably fucking one of each. It's so half-assed.

I don't understand why GW are being so retarded about this, they keep advertising the new Primaris as like "look they have parts of old armour! More parts of old armour!" so they fucking KNOW that's what we want but they barely make it even 10% of the kit.
>>

>best place to get a copy of the rules and codexes these days
Most 11th edition codices aren't out yet, but the answer for everything is "buy one of them and enter the code that comes with it into the phone app to get the most current one" or just pirate it via wahapedia.
>detachments
They usually don't have rules of certain units, they just synergize with certain units or general army builds.
Examples: SoB's Hallowed Martyrs doesn't require any units, and works well with all of them. Guard's Bridgehead Strike heavily incentivizes bringing Tempestus units on the other side of this.
>does battleline even matter
Yes for objective control if your battleline has sticky objectives (read: an ability that keeps control after your unit steps off). Cadians have this ability for example.

Generally you want to find a detachment, read what units or abilities it buffs, and then work from there building into each other. I play Guard and Sisters and I'm currently building a CSM renegade raiders list so I can only really opine on those.

Download page for updates
https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/downloads/warhammer-40000/

Currently only one 11th Codex is out. 10th Codexes are valid until that faction's 11th comes out.

I like using NewRecruit.eu for listbuilding (it replaced Battlescribe). It keeps its rules mostly up to date and lets you make armies without limit. The official app is decent, but its free mode means you can only make one army list at a time and that just plain fuckin sucks.

>Detachments, do they have any requirements of like certain units needed or is it just a free army bonus?
Nope. Just a bonus to certain troop types. You have 3DP to spend at 2000 points and can mix and match from your faction as you want to play how you want.
>Does battleline even matter?
Battleline are what Troops used to be. You get bonuses to controlling objectives, and since the game's primary scoring is taking and holding objectives, they're good to have, but by no means a necessary "Troops Tax" anymore.
>>
>>98599970
>They're claiming it has both Mk7 and Mk6

Hm, what I'm trying to figure out is if I need them at all. There's 3 different ways to build my force depending on if I want 0, 2 or 4 battleline units, upsides/downsides to each (like the 4 battleline units list involves taking a suboptimal detachment).

Just a thought, getting a squad of Heresy Marines and the Heavy Weapons upgrade kit would be cheaper than trying to get 10 proper Devastators with Plasma since those are only 2 to a box. Unless you have someone to trade bits with. But those sorts are getting rarer and rarer nowadays.

The core rules are free online as a PDF like the other anon said, they're all here:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/downloads/warhammer-40000/
Just download the ones you want, they get updated here whenever GW updates them. This page also links to the Munitorum Field Manual, which has point values for every codex-supported model (and some legends) for every army.
>don't think you really answered the other two questions adequately though
I don't think you understand the question you asked the first time if you are saying my answer was insufficient.
Detachments have a cost of detachment points that can be used depending on game size, which also gives total point values for army size.
Detachments do not have a specific requirement to be brought, but some have more synergy with certain units than others and some directly give buffs to certain units with certain keywords, such as Bridgehead Strike and Tempestus units for guard.
Read what the detachment does, and then pick which one you like the sound of with the units you want to bring, and then adjust both accordingly once you sit down and start putting it together.
On the battleline question, again they are good at getting objective control and keeping it if they have a sticky objectives ability like Cadians have.
You do not have to bring battleline units, but they are useful. Stating the use case for a unit is expressing how they "even matter," which was the exact wording of your question, you oaf.

If you were more specific in what you're trying to run, we could give better information and even start pointing you in a direction to form a modern army list to play.

I'm going to hold off my further judgement until I see a sprue or more clarification, but at the moment, they're being stupidly vague about this and it makes no sense considering the old armour and helmets was the big selling point for the new kits and armageddon box in the first place.

I've mentioned it here before so might sound similar but I'm the one making some Tanith out of a couple boxes of spectre squad and joining them to an old imperial soup force (inquisitor, scions, and deathwatch) that I'm trying to refresh.
>sit down and start typing out my listbuildan options
>hey I should double check thinga on newrecruit...
>detachment costs have changed
Huh? Was there some update? Guard codex isn't out yet, tho maybe I should just wait for it... Anyway my previous problem was that recon element detachment was 3DP, so if I ran speccy squad as their bespoke datasheet and used recon I could get double cover on my Ghosts which seemed really nice, but I'd have no battleline. Running speccy squad as cadians/catachans with bridgehead strike would mean I wouldn't get the nice KT datasheet, but I'd have 4 or even 5 battleline units.

As it stands newrecruit is showing recon has apparently dropped to 2DP, so I could run it and bridgehead to get the best of both worlds - slightly hardier scions as battleline objective sitters, Tanith as damage dealing scouters. Or is the lethal hits from combined arms more worth? That one sounds really juicy.
>>

Huh, yeah so recon element is just 2DP now ig. I've been looking over and pondering this shit the last few weeks and it was showing as 3, this makes things so much simpler. Now my only real choice is whether to go combined arms or recon, it doesn't seem like neutering my datasheets for the extra battleline units is worthwhile. How good/useless is army-wide cover, over gaining lethal hits?

>Was there some update?
Yea, that big point value adjustment like a week ago included detachment point costs being changed. Recon Element was the only guard detachment to get changed (from 3 to 2).
Those are also listed in the Munitorum Field Manual, at the bottom of your faction's list.

If you want to run Recon Element (it's just okay, not ideal not awful), I'd pair it with Abhuman Auxiliaries.
>both buff Ratlings so you get 3 more recon squads alongside the 3x Cadian Recon Squads
Both can run great interference against an enemy's advance, especially if there's twice as many of them.
>Bullgryns and Ogryns with -1 to hit from Stealth for "line infantry"
Recon Element applies Stealth to everything smaller than a Baneblade.
>For 10 points each, all 3 of your Commissars can have Feel no Pain 4
This lets them stay alive walking forward with Bullgryns for a lot longer.
>tanks now have stealth
Put 2 Leman Russ Vanquishers on long sight lines, they have a -1 to being hit and have 6 feet of range with an s18ap-4 main gun that hits on 3+ (Heavy) that does at least 7 damage per shot. This is your "kill big things" unit. The detachments don't buff much here beyond the -1 to being hit, I just think it's insane that such a good unit is 130 points so you should bring a few. If you bring a LR tank commander to sit with the 2 Vanquishers, they hit on 2+ as long as you give your tanks the fire order and he can have autocannons to kill any marine-tier units that get close to your backline.

The current guard "meta" is very much pointing at tanks, but you can make things work without them, albeit you should still bring SOME because of their big guns.

This all sounds bretty gud, but then goes back to the original issue in that I'd have 0 battleline, and I still don't quite understand if that's really a problem or not. In any case, recon element applying across the whole army sounds cool and thematic of a joint Ghosts/Inquisition special task force, the Tanith recon squads get +1 save and I can just slap on bridgehead to get battleline on my scions.

In the hypothetical roster I described, you could still bring 2 10-mans of Cadians in Taurox/Chimeras/Centaurs to capture and hold objectives. These battleline units, ironically, would never see battle, they'd just go capture flags and then run to the next flag in their transport while your recon units screen for your tanks/bullgryns/ogryns who work together to kill your enemies.
The Cadians' sticky objectives ability means that as long as your enemy doesn't deepstrike onto you and they don't just chew through your recon squads (who have infiltrators), you've effectively "spawn trapped" the enemy and you have complete map control. Anything that could counter your map lockdown will die to the Vanquishers, or will trade out with the Bullgryns and Ratlings.

I had planned to buy a couple halftraks, so would be ideal using them as objective claimers with a couple cadian squads. The problem here is what to use for said cadians. I don't like Cadia, visually or thematically, and my force already has so many different Imperial elements/regiments I don't want to add another. As it is I'll have
>Inquisitor and his stormtroopers
>couple squads of Deathwatch allies

Anon... you can just play the story. It has rental units except for a tiny handful of missions that aren't hard to do. You can play the whole thing + events with an account that has almost nothing on it
>>
>>98600706
You could always kitbash a recon squad box with a box of Cadians. Find a specific way to differentiate the "recon squad" units and the "not!Cadians" units. Just make sure your weaponry on the units is close enough to the Cadians and the visual distinction is strong enough to tell at a glance. Different colors, markings, hats/helmets, shit like that.

The other battleline guard don't have the sticky objectives ability, so they HAVE to stay on the objectives to control them for points. Cadians are the only data sheet that lets them retain control after leaving (until an enemy walks on it), and while most people would be fine saying "yea this proxy is Cadians," they'd have a harder time doing it for Scions, who have their own data sheet.
