Magic the Gathering thread without posting or discussing Universes Beyond

>how do I search for non-UB cards?
On Scryfall "-is:ub"
On EDHREC selecting "Universes Beyond" under Card Filters hides them.

>Can I play UB cards even if I hate them?
You can do whatever you want, but you shouldn't contribute to the enshittification of this game. More people taking a stance against UB means WotC have to acknowledge it
Proxy them if you must, or wait for them to get in-universe reprints as a few already have

depends on how good the proxy looks. I hate UB, but I have to say I'm quite fond of Barrow-Blade, it has a very unique function that tends to leave opponents facepalming and its a good chuckle the first few times it happens

I still don't understand why JotC cucks so hard to collectors with this reserve list. Especially given that OFFICIAL formats like Legacy and Commander use those card. Some common examples found in the current meta
>dual lands
>null rod
>mox diamond
>city of traitors
>lion's eye diamond
The refusal to make reprints of these cards just makes those formats, and even unofficial formats, retardedly expensive to play. And lets face it, JotC personally does not make any money from some fag buying an alpha badlands over ebay from some random oldfag selling his collection. On top of that there's NO reason to believe that it will drop the prices of certain printings. Swords to Plowshares has been printed dozens of times recently and the old printings like alpha or ice age are still going up in price in the degenerate collector market. New printings will just mean whoever wants to run those cards just gets a cheaper version with different options for art.

All they have to do if they want to make money is just to print some limited time boxes with various format staples according to a theme like the From the Vaults boxes at a reasonable price.

The most recent trash in universe set was EoE a year ago. Before that was Aetherdrift at the beginning of that year. Before that... I don't know. Duskmourn was half incredible half crap, before that was a great set, and before that was two hat sets, which are bleh, but they are still magic. And before that is was an incredible couple years minus maybe New Capenna and NEO.
All that said, they are all better than TMNT by a mile thematically, and are all still more "magic" than avatar and final fantasy, since none of those you mentioned are magic at all, they are just fantasy. Magic is not just fantasy.

Commander is just as gay as ub and has probably done more damage to mtg as a whole, ub is mostly an aesthetic and flavor clash with mtg. They can say it's for space saving.
The thing is that they don't need to do it on the cards themselves to push the trans agenda there are other ways. The fact of the matter is that there are not so many legendary creatures where a card has to refer to itself a second time to afford an opportunity to use pronouns, but in the future there will be an invented pronouns card for sure.
I make custom cards and I will stick to the old templating "this card" has no soul, but a card will always be an "it".

Simple - because WoTC fears that "investoooooors" would murder rape them hard in the court for tanking value of their "investments". I think when 4th edition dropped they were already preparing GIGANTIC group case and reserve list was created to stop them from pulling the trigger.
As much as reserve list is retarded, I don't think that Pinkertons are powerful enough to stop an army of autists from turning WoTC into shreds.
>>
>>98657931
There is no way they would have a legal requirement to not reprint cards. If that is the case, that's retarded.
I think it's much more likely that wotc did it as a way to promit collecting their cards, to increase profits, and now years later it's biting them in the ass.

Is there anything else i should get? Or what boosters should a new player buy?
>>

sleeves. not only for the protection but for waay easier shuffling. also dice and maybe extra cards to use as tokens
booster wise, if you are playing limited with them then get enough of one set for a draft or sealed. not sure if the starer collection comes with enough but foundations is a good set to introduce new players
draft = 3 boosters per player
sealed = 6 per player

Don't buy boosters unless you're using them to play limited like drsft or sealed. Prerelease for Reality Fracture is coming up on the weekend of the 25th, so I would recommend going to that. If you just want to do it with your friends you can also buy a takehome kit for each of you and do it that way from home so you all have time, or you can buy two or three total depending on the size of your group and draft them.
Beyond that, I wouod recommend downloading the Manabox app because it makes deckbuilding incredibly easy, and maybe look into different formats like pauper or pioneer so you can start building decks to play in actual stanctioned formats. If you have an LGS near you, maybe ask them what formats are populat there, what ones they hold events for, etc.
If you want to bulk out your collection, some stores offer playsets of the commons and uncommons in each new set for pretty cheap, which is an alright deal when you're starting out and really don't know what you're building.
>>
I keep seeing all this talk about how to play coomander on the jewtubes but they always operate on the axis that everyone would play intelligently. this has not been the case irl for me. it's almost always 2 players kingmaking a third player even when that player is clearly in the lead already. like what do you do in this situation?

I would agree if Jace didn't have more set presence than much better beloved mechanics. Planeswalker tokens and nonlegendary walkers in general are a design space so far largely unexplored, and the latter at least has been asked for for some time.
>set is inexplicably split up into three themes that could and should each be their own set under more normal circumstances (Hexhaven, Planar Chaos 2, Oops All Jace)
Symptom of the removal of Blocks, every set suffers from this to some extent. Stories simply have no room to breathe,
>most of the Planar Chaos 2 characters are uncommons so the aspect everyone was actually looking forward to is kind of lame
Why is a higher chance to get the cards you want bad?
>Hexhaven stuff is also underwhelming

I don't even get the mindset. Aside from it being selfish, I just can't imagine caring about winning that much that I'd want the game to end for everyone if I can't see a line to victory
It's not like he was getting locked out or crippled by stax, he just couldn't get his value engine online.
I've played games where it's clear to me I'm not going to win. I don't care, I play it out, especially if my mere presence affects how the game goes because someone still has to chunk my health to actually win and has to decide between that or attacking someone else, for example.
The only time I will concede is if I'm so screwed that I have a couple turns of draw and pass, and even then the idea of ending the game for others and not just myself is unthinkable
>>
>>98664162
To some, winning is the only way to have fun, so if he isn't winning, he'd rather end the game. He would evidently also rather lose than conceed.
Commander isn't for competitive people.
>>
>>98664255
CGB once said he played commander with people from a boardgames background and they were really reluctant to concede even when it should be clear that it's over, he thought it was the wrong mindset
But I think it's based. Unless the game has become so fucked that it's not really a game anymore, just wait one more fucking rotation for the guy to "do the thing"
It's a casual social format and viewing it more like a boardgame instead of just quitting when winning seems unlikely is absolutely the correct mindset
>>
>>98664301
100%, yeah. Boardgame mindset isn't great for 1v1, but for multiplayer it's great. There are so many opprotunities to come back, and more than that, the goal is to have fun together, not exclusively to win.
>>
>>98629369

>>98629369

>>
>>98664539
>whatever they called their UW-UB reskins before they just gave up on that entirely.
They stopped this because there is (was) an internal war within WotC over UB. Several people hitched their careers to UB. The success of UB is their career success. That is why in-universe sets have been sabotaged with weak mechanics and short preview windows compared to UB which gets cards previewed sometimes literally 6 months or more before release. It is why WotC maintains a policy of ignoring UB critics and insisting that they will eventually just leave and be replaced by new UBpiggies.
At the most recent shareholder meeting they literally mischaracterized the fact that old players are trying to vote with their wallets by buying more in-universe sets as actually being UBpiggies getting into the game and then slurping up in-universe too because UB is just so great and gets soooo many people into Magic and totally isn't propped up by scalpers trying to gamble on name recognition.

If they printed Omenpaths, it would provide a metric that would demonstrate how much of the playerbase would prefer in-universe alternatives to unique cards if they could get them. They won't do it, people's careers are riding on that part of the playerbase being quashed

Ro WotC it very well may have been, at least for the initial order because investors bought boxes on boxes (by having lied to wotc saying that they are storefronts of storefronts buying boxes for them) and stores probably bought a ton too. At the cosumer level though? Didn't sell for shit. Wotc doesn't see that side, though.
>>
>>98664605
Literally >>98664631
What you have to understand is that even when you can see UB rotting on store shelves with your own eyes, what Hasbro reports to its shareholders is the distributor sales, which is how much stock they offloaded onto retailers. Even though they do have the capacity to monitor how much stock retailers actually sell to customers, those figures aren't being reported.

Again, people have hitched their careers to UB internally.

>>98664644
>Outside of the schitzoposting at the start
You can choose not to believe me, but I am telling you there are people at WotC for whom the success of UB is their own success because they backed it and staked their careers on it. It's why we had a whole year of 50% UB after assurances that it wasn't going to be Standard legal. That was the test year to see which side was "right"

I've never seen a sweaty bracket 2, but man I wish bracket 3 wasn't such a lucking leap.
Ending a game on turn 6 is just fucking insane, and of course every autismo in the hobby takes it as permission since it's in the guidelines.

I think it's extremely warped by "content creators" who want to keep a video'd commander game to around 1h 30mins with space for ad reads, explaining what is going on, and talking heads. Of course Command Zone is the worst for this,. but other channels follow their lead. The phrase "just shuffle up and play again!" gets thrown around a lot too, by people who are playing way more games than the average person who only gets to play maybe 3 games a week all on a Friday night. If you're playing a lot you probably don't care if games are short or felt like shit to play in, because you can just go to the next one.
But either way I really can't understand the obsession with playing the same opening turns over and over again. Turns 1 and 2 people are ramping, turn 3 commanders are coming down, turn 4-6 they're trying to set up the combo. It's so linear and repetitve.

I like my games to go to 10 turns.
>>
>>98665665
>to keep a video'd commander game to around 1h 30mins
and that's with cuts with most. people have started to say shooting themselves is a preferable option to a 2 hour game, which will happen consistently if everyone makes a deck that can actually deal with a board more than once.
>>
>>98665647
at the end of the day this is a dead thread created as a hugbox proven by the fact that you can never answer my question, enjoy your tranny jace
>>
>>98665665
>Ending a game on turn 6 is just fucking insane, and of course every autismo in the hobby takes it as permission since it's in the guidelines.
if one were to read the guideline carefully you would see that the turn 6 2-card combo in b3 is intended to allow people to run their sanguine bond-exquisite blood combo provided *it's not consistent enough* but since it's impractical and silly to make an arbitrary cutoff for consistency (is 10% to combo off on t6 ok? what about 20%? 30%? sol ring for comparison shows up in the opener 8% of the time and people still get mad about that) brackets are best played when you are forced to sandbag (despite what gavin says) until an arbitrary turn X
for example, b3 would have a clause where you can't go infinite/do an altwincon like thoracle until your natural turn 7 (basically when everyone else has had a turn 6)
>>
>>98665871
I don't even see the problem with a 2 hour commander game if its going on because of dynamic gameplay. It's when it's 5 boardwipes, or brutal stax that it becomes unfun to play.
But I don't get the fucking golf mentality. Why would I want to objective of commander to be playing the least amount of commander possible?

>>98666383
Brackets 1-4 all just want 1 or maybe even 2 turns added to the projection of when games would end. It would help the format immensely
>>
>>98667097
they've convinced themselves of the mentality that all turns are created equal, so therefore faster games=more games=more turns=more fun

b2: turn 9

>it has fitting themes like all these set that happened in the last few years since UB has been introduced!
For one, I did say they miss sometimes. For two, it's quite odd that the number of trash sets dramatically increased once UB started being worked on. Funny how that works.
Still, we have had good sets every year, and whipe the story has been up and down, I and many others have still enjoyed it.
>never say it's gunna move merch
I never did say that, no. It does not have mainstream appeal, and having UB sets is not going to increase mtg merch sales.
>>
>>98669046
>the number of trash sets dramatically increased
we get trash sets well before UB, which is almost always the 3rd set of the old block structure

daang, all the color hosers are kinda bad
>>
>a new multiversal threat appears, does evil stuff, the heroes search for and find the MacGuffins to defeat it, there's a climactic final battle, the threat gets defeated and wiped out
>all within the space of one set
I think that's a new record. To top it, next time they'll have to do two multiversal threats at once.

I heard they killed Jace. Dang. I remember when this guy was THE card to open. And all the smart cool nerds played him.

>>
>>98674313
It's frustrating too because it didn't even need to end that way. An Echoverse is such a useful concept for any time they want to play with colorshift or alternate timelines in future.
Could have had it where Jace is defeated and the Echoverse is contained so it won't overwrite the multiverse, but it continues to exist almost like a planar Vesuva and just occasionally spits out variants of things on other planes

But nooooo. Fucking eaten by a jellyfish.

there was this maro teaser about having color hosers in the set but of course I made the critical mistake of expecting anything interesting or impactful out of it
>>
>>98676877
Oh literally just flanderization of each color's "thing" on a 2 mana uncommon. That's a shame.
That shit has never been playable in the first place, what were they thinkiiiiing?

Overrated card. You're casting it for the "spells can't be countered" part anyway

>>98677531
Never is definitely an overstatement, but this is exceptional because it protects so absurdly well specifically from counter spells and removal, which is something green wants to do, while also cantriping, all for G.

Protects your permanents
Protects your hand against targeted disruption
If timed correctly can completely protect against storm or fizzle them partway through a combo turn
Protects your graveyard from target player effects such as Boggart Trawler
Can be card neutral, functioning as a cycler at worst

I guess it's an alright aristocrats general, but its color restriction is, well, restricted, and its ability is basically just voltron-leaning-- but it doesn't have protection or evasion, so it's really just a free sac outlet. If only it make all your creatyres do this and gave them all -x/-0.
>>
>>98681809
It's annoying that so few of the new legends have more than 1 color. Like I know they're mostly uncommon, but come on

This set should've been the second and third sets in the Secrets of Strixhaven block but noooooo we need fucking Bendytoots on a Magic card

Might be to counter the "everything is a commander set" narrative? I don't know. It is a very black effect.
>>
>>98682087
What's the story?
>>
>>98682129
But the could have easily changed the effect to make it white, and make the other Loot URG.
>>
>>98682129
>Might be to counter the "everything is a commander set" narrative?
The reason people say that is the number of legendaries, not their colors and viability in the command zone
>I don't know. It is a very black effect.
It's whatever, it could have been dimir, and then you'd have access to a bunch of blue spells that give -X/-0
There's no real reason not to do this. The only possible justification is that they're printing a bunch of legendaries at uncommon and Draft will be unplayable if they don't enforce monocolor pretty heavily on these picks.

>>98682133
You mean the narrative if we ran it the way I said? Idk maybe we don't announce the Echoverse right away, maybe we say there's this counterpart to Hexhaven on a plane no one's ever heard of before and Jace is head teacher.
Then in the next set reveal Jace's Wackyverse. All of Hexhaven has been about training his soldiers to invade the multiverse because fuck it WotC has precisely 1 idea for villains in this setting. And then you can do much more with the colorshifting aspect of it without having to fill a bunch of slots with Hexhaven cards

But we end it with Wackyverse counterparts arguing for their right to live. Maybe the Jacestice League can still kill their reflections, but other counterparts continue to exist, they just get confined to the Wackyverse somehow
>>
>>98682156
>But we end it with Wackyverse counterparts arguing for their right to live.
God, no. WotC dropped the ball on almost every detail about this set, but that’s one thing that they got right.
>>
>>98684377
You can't just type completely indefensible takes purely because they are the inverse of what someone else said and expect replies

i've come to terms with the fact that the game is more or less dead unless you play commander. i haven't sold my cards though primarily because a lot of the pieces are irreplaceable, hold a lot of sentimental value, and i still enjoy goldfishing ad naus storm.

That's why I build predh decks. I'm out here imprinting Signal Pest on a Prototype Portal and losing games. Fantastic experience honestly.

I would build preedh but there are so few commanders for it. Genuinely single digits for 3 color combinations.
