Speaking of Undead, thinking of starting Tomb Kings with the intent to also run it as a Lhamian themed Vampire Counts army as well.
My plan was that Spear and Archer Skeletons would double as skeletons(duh), Mortuary Priests could double as Necromancers, Tomb Kings/Princes as Wights, and Ushabti as Varghulfs/Vargheists. Carrion as giant bats, Scarab Swarms as Bat Swarms and/or Ghosts?
Any ideas of what other units in either armies could proxy as would be appreciated.
Also, if anyone has links to models of ancient Egyptian women I could use as Vampires I'd be grateful.

Doing too much.
This is the type of whacky over the top shit they killed WHFB and created AoS for. It's not that it's not unique it interesting, it just has no place in classic warhammer fantasy, which is what TOW is supposed to be.
Bringing back classic fantasy and then just making it the same vibe as AoS but with square bases just seems a bit silly and unappealing to me. That's why I was dismayed with the Cathay release and I can understand why that one or two historical autists keep advocating for Cossacks or polish Kislev

I think people have a problem with Cathay being too culturally and socially 'simple', not that they don't use enough magical effects and fantasy creatures interacting with each other for their soldiers.

People don't complain that the Empire is too simple, and yet the majority of their models are 'Man with weapon' or 'Gun' or "Wizard that shoots fire/comets/beast energy". But the Empire has political disunity and struggles, multiple internal factions, religious diversity and multiple significant internal enemies.

>>98651424
Noticed this as well. Last time it was the same Alex Boyd art "upscaled" not it's "coloured"
>>
>>98651255
So it falls under regular infantry, where Ogres are Monstrous infantry so are not applicable to the Parry rule.
>>
>>98651504
the disunity in cathay is probably going to come from the dragon siblings squabbling amongst themselves, but miao is the only one out so far so we dont get to see that yet.

once they get around to making the others, it will become more apparent that there are differing views within the country. also probably when/if the monkey king shows up too
>>
>>98651520
They could have shown that in the general descriptions of Cathay, they don't need to wait until the other Chinamarchs have released.
If they do add more internal politics and flavour, as this stage it will certainly be in response to the fan reception of them not having enough.
>>
>>98651548
the armies only been out for like a year, give it some time. you're comparing it to factions like the empire which have 30 years of stories and maps to draw from

List was

Noble - full plate, loremaster, dragon helm, sword of hoeth, high magic, general

5 Ellyrian Reavers - spear, bow
14 Lothern Sea Guard - full command, shields

10 Swordmasters of Hoeth.

5 Sisters of Avelorn

Was thinking of getting an eagle and dragon princes. Kind of also want to run a chad noble firing off 3 S5 shots from the relic bow every turn.

What do you want to paint the most right now? If you like painting cavalry, get the dragon princes. If you want to paint a monster, get an eagle. Get a noble on a griffon or convert one to be on a chariot if you want a shooty noble that can also do other stuff.

no, the dragon emperor and the moon empress only had 9 children, and they're all accounted for one way or another.
technically we don't know what happened to any of the eastern dragons other than the dragon emperor, if they were even ever a thing, but it doesn't seem like cathayans would give a shit about dragons that aren't the royal ones.
and technically nothing would have stopped the 9 dragon children to have incestuous dragon children between each other or with other dragons, but nothing suggests they did.
at the very best you can make your own dragon-blooded shugengan, but they cannot shapeshift into dragons without headcanon.

>What makes dwarfs so unfun to play and fight
I agree it's a skill issue on both sides of the table.

Dwarf players don't take advantage of the rules in TOW to keep their army manoeuvrable. Every single dwarf regiment can take drilled, meaning they can start the game in marching column, hustle up the board, then redress the ranks into combat formation before moving immediately again. They can all also march within 8" of enemy units to keep the pace up. Miners can appear across the table, rangers get scout and move through cover, so it's not like everything has to hustle across the table to get into position either. It's laziness on the dwarf players' part that has led to the army being viewed as a one trick pony stand and shoot gunline army. It's also very hard to lose a game with dwarfs if they castle up, which is again laziness and/or cowardice on the players' part.

On the opponents' part, it's laziness again. They see a castled-up gunline across the table and don't think to themselves "this is interesting, a new challenge for me to figure out with the resources available to me", nor "oh cool this game is different and unlike the last 3 I played, it's fun to have variety", only "my regiments are crashing against the foe like waves on a rock, I'm not getting anywhere, nothing's happening, they're not moving and I'm not winning, there must be something wrong with this game, this is boring."
>>
>>98653706
They're not interactive, they stand still and they either kill your army before you had a chance to do anything with it, or your army reaches them and they have no chance to do anything but stand still and then die

It's more fun to play alone at that point

This 100%. I fucking love fighting against dwarfs with my beastwomen. They straight up surrender the flanks to me completely so ambush is great. Their ranged combat is countered by skirmish everything. Their heavy armor means nothing against my missle pigs, preyton, and characters in general. My magic like Primordial Gloom and Shaden Wodespan both aren't effected by their magic resist, and with the newest faq I think Strangleroot isn't either, but I'd have to go read that again cause the faq did make it so Strangleroot didn't need LoS to use, but it might still need to target the unit, not a point on the ground like a cannon. In either case, it's not particularly hard to cast for primal herd even with the MR.
It's a fun match up.

I recently won that AoS DoK shrine in a raffle my LGS was doing for an event. Since I'm running the beastmen in a narrative campaign with some buddies, I figured I may as well use some of it to make a herdstone.
My idea is to sand down the top surface of the dais area on the bottom. At the front end of the platform, I'll put a crude stone altar surrounded by furs and silks (Slaaneshi brayherd) that I can make with greenstuff. At the back end of the platform, I'll place the smoking brazier from the shrine with that dark orb pooling above it (just drilled into place via a hole in the brazier), which will sit just ahead of the actual hearthstone. The rest of the top half of the shrine model won't be used at all, but the two columns on either side of the platform will be cut and sanded down unevenly to give the appearance that they are crumbling.
In my head, it's supposed to be a shrine to some forgotten god that my brayherd has defiled and repurposed for the worship of their own dark god. I also need a ritual site terrain piece for my greater bray-shaman character, so this is my attempt to kill two birds with one stone.

Thoughts? Ideas? Should I just make two separate pieces instead?
Post herdstones for the dark gods.

How about something like this? Add all the beastmen stuff as well as you said, but add chains from the spikes to the points, paint that twirly blob on the bottom blood red, then add green stuff vines and such growing around it.
>>
>>98654545
I'm thinking about leaving the top half off because it reads too much as Dark Elf. Almost everyone in the campaign is centred around Tilea, the Border Princes area, or the Badlands. /Mydudes/ mainly operate out of Tilea, and while Dark Elf shit there isn't out of the question, the bottom half alone makes for a better (not)Roman base.
Adding decorations to the columns sounds like a good idea, though. Stuff like vines, trophies, icons, or slaves would work well.
>>
>>98654609
Could turn the top half into a platform at the bottom. Just lay it horizontally leading from the pillars. But yeah it's very dark elf.

I'm trying to be sparing with extravagant bits. Yeah, /mydudes/ are aligned with Slaanesh, which means they like finery and are more willing to work with humans than other beastmen, but they're still beastmen.
Moreover, I was thinking about making the herdstone itself a big, desecrated Roman-esque statue that the herd has been dragging around. The Greek/Roman style would kinda be weird next to Dark Elf stuff, honestly.

I'm the beastwomen slaanesh themed player. Different bent for /mydudes/ where the brayherd is led by a corrupted wood elf princess trying to torture, terrorize, and cause as much pain as possible to get revenge for the elves and other mortals for letting her kingdom die. Slaanesh gifted her beastwomen to achieve those goals.
My herdstone doesn't travel with them. Instead their presence causes the local town fountain to start flowing black ichor and a giant bleeding rose grows from the spout. This acts as a beacon for the herd to find their next target.

no, dwarf shooting isnt even that good. i sent a block of 10 rangers shooting into some 6+ save light cav for 3 turns straight and only managed to kill one horse.

the only dwarf shooting unit really worth a damn is irondrakes, but even they have been pretty heavily nerfed in the FAQ. and i guess the thane with the turbo handcannon setup.

thunderers, quarrelers, and rangers are melee units with some bonus shooting, not shooting units. also dwarf artillery is very mid, possibly even outright bad.

>>98653876
fighting gunlines doesn't add variety, they're all the same, play the same, and way too common; "the resource available to you" are the vast majority of the time just empty tables, there's no fun puzzle to solve or tactic to try.

your regiments WILL be crashing against the foe like waves on a rock, you WILL not be getting anywhere, nothing WILL be happening, they WILL not be moving, there WILL be something wrong with that game, and that WILL be boring.

That would be almost unheard of for a number of reasons. The lists at the back of the book were optional and were not event compliant so the chances of people using them were slim. The fact that most people in 6th also played mainly ampng local friends made it slimmer. But to answer, no I do not. Strigoi vampires on the other hand were meant to be used here and there.

The framing device I'd have for such a book would be that of an imperial scholar making an elaborate thesis about greenskins, trolls, ogres and other such creatures, only for him to get captured by orcs&goblins in one of his last excursions, and having various hijinks such as him being forced to teach them how to read and write, just so they can tell whether what he's written is an insult or something, even if they give it for granted, as well as for having the scholar make further notes about they are actually scary quick learners, or other corrections at the sides of the pages on his previous assumptions to show both the point of view of a common man and that of someone who actually knows greenskins.
And that would allow me also to have the last pages of the book, with the scholar's final considerations and important revelations or solutions to the greenskin problem be visibly torn off the book and scribbled over by orcs.
And also the name of the book would be "liber WAAARGH!!!" because the greenskins would have defaced the cover as well by writing over the original title.

Generally, newer products cost more, so TOW may have some cheaper stuff because it's selling older plastic kits in bigger bundles.
But there are some caveats, some 40k or aos armies can be made relatively cheaply because they contain only a few models, while TOW is only really cheap when you avoid pricey metal stuff or if you don't have some big points sink like a overly charged lord character.

If you can, avoid buying from gw directly and instead use a local game store or online retailer that offers a discount, you can rather easily find -20% or -25% on products, even new ones, while on the used market you can get stuff like -30% or -50% even on practically new shit.

It's a good opportunity to add variety in the army, but if you want them to look more like the rest of your army that would work as well.
For my dogres I went with a similair but slightly different scheme compared to the rest.
>>
>>98656676
It's probably slightly cheaper when it comes down to it, but that depends a lot on the choices you make. TOW generally uses more models, but they tend to be less expensive individually if you're buying the older plastics. Outliers definitely exist though, and if you're playing a horde army (large volume of models) or going for old metal models, or proxying a lot of stuff from AoS, it can get very pricey.
Are you interested in any specific army?
>>

Maybe just use the same colors but reverse priority ? That way they are different yet still match the colors of the army.

I actually found a skintone I want to try, then contrast it with a bright red scheme for the scales (think classic fantasy dragons). It could look pretty good.

I'm not putting goblins on 25mm no matter what. Will people be mad?
>>
>>98657127
not really, you can have them on 20mm bases on a slightly spaced movement tray with zero issue.
If you don't want a spaced movement tray either the only real problems may come out when you're hit by a template (because more of your dudes will be hit), or when you somehow give them multiple attacks or are fought by guys with multiple attacks (because then more of your multi-attack models will be in direct base contact and do their multiple attacks, or because fewer than the enemy's multiple attack models will be in direct contact and do their multiple attacks). But if you and your opponent are gentlemanly you won't have a single issue killing or sparing one or two goblins in any situation.
>>
>>98656676
It depends what army you play in what game and where you buy it from. Stormcast and Space Marines are in so many releases that they're super cheap to buy secondhand. TOW doesn't have such a format now, but the models are older and come in larger boxes, which makes them slightly cheaper, but they're usually old models which makes the pricing a little annoying. Ogres for either TOW or AOS are probably the cheapest overall army, at least with the older models (GW replaced them recently for AOS but a ton of older boxes are still around). To give a very direct comparison, ironguts are armoured ogres in both games. In AOS, 6 ironguts is 400 points. In TOW, 6 ironguts starts at 234 points. But if you were to give the champion a magic weapon, and the banner bearer a magic banner, and buy all the upgrades, you can increase the cost to 347 points. TOW has a lot more point cost granularity which also makes the question harder to answer.

However, 40k has more players than any other tabletop wargame put together so it's probably the safest 'investment'. The issue is just that the game is also the least fun.
>>

That, or the vampire uses an intermediary to get them to show up on his side, and by the time of the battle its too late to turn tail, what with them being surrounded by monsters

>>98657302
Thats fair. I don’t castle with them, but appreciate that overall they’re gonna do what they do well and reliably. But I understand they aren’t the most interesting army to play.

>Most of my projects start with me hating them
I'm the same way. I just have to get over that initial hump of the early work. Once I trust the process and things start coming together, I tend to be pretty happy with my work.

>>98657065
They're not scans. I used pictures of existing models and modified them into a rough approximation of what I'm looking to do by using AI. Once I have that, I use AI again to render the images into 3D models, which I can use as reference material for sculpting (or simply print off if I give up on my current project).
As I mentioned in my other post, I used the AoS blissbarb archers as a base. You can do what I did fairly easily if you spend a couple of minutes searching for reference shots of all 10 sculpts.
>>
So, has anyone seen the Cathay Loremaster video?
Is it just the contents of the AJs with nothing else?
>>
>>98657302
Well there's more than one way to play them as they can be a mobile army od they want despite what some people say, but I get you. The one thing I miss missing out on how fun magic can be outside of anvil with them is that too many runes are just +1 to something and not enough that do something unique or interesting. Not saying they should just let runepriest use more runes as some sort of spell scrolls to shoot fireballs but... you know actually a few blast spells in rune form could be fun.
>>
>>98657517
Wow. No wonder GW is super anal about sharing sprues now
>>
>>98657545
I agree with Rune magic and item runes needing a bit more flavor. Maybe some runes that function like bound spells? I swear it was a thing in older army books?
>>
>>98657745
Maybe in 8th since I don't have anything like that in 6th and 6.5th, at least to the best of my recollection. But could could add fun stuff that modify your list like bring back the rune of brotherhood.
>>
>>98657531
>Is it just the contents of the AJs with nothing else?
you can bet on it
>>
>>98657811
In 8th stacking some runes gave you special effects, like getting a rune of fire gave you flaming attacks like usual, but stacking two on your weapon gave a flame breath attack.

Every time Cathay was depicted as nuanced, morally grey, or at least not perfectly benevolent or flawless:
Edition: Armies of Grand Cathay.
>Internal Rebellions:
Explicit mention of internal rebellions rocking the stability of Cathay (p. 5).
>Demonic Manipulation:
Daemons whispering to the Dragon Emperor in his dreams, begging for his assistance to bypass the polar gates (p. 5).
>The Tragedy of Shiyama:

>Tragic Friendly Fire:
Miao Ying’s army executing the retreating Shiyama because Chaos illusions masked her as a daemonic threat (p. 8).
>Orwellian Memory Wiping:
The Moon Empress executing a continent-wide mind-wipe using Yin magic to erase any memory of Shiyama ever living among mortals (p. 9).
>The Vulnerability of Absentees:
Mention of the turmoil, political fracturing, and disharmony that immediately erupted during the latest departure of the Emperor and Empress (p. 11).
>Utilitarian Sacrifice:
The Emperor, unable to save the Sky Titans, choosing to weaponize a radioactive Warpstone meteor as a last resort to wipe out the Ogre migration (p. 14).
>Fear of the Undead:
The Dragon Emperor harboring deep fear and anxiety regarding the rise and raw power of Nagash (p. 16).
>Political Fracturing:
Human noble houses actively scheming and plotting mutiny behind Miao Ying’s back right inside Nan-Gau (p. 27).
>Hazardous Weapons of War:
The creation of Warpstone Sentinels, crafted from clay laced with warpstone dust; soldiers stationed near them quickly succumb to mutation and the taint of Chaos (p. 37).
>Necromantic Magic:
The Lore of Yin actively blurring the line of life and death by literally ripping ghosts and spirits out of the underworld (p. 47).

Every time Cathay was depicted as nuanced, morally grey, or at least not perfectly benevolent or flawless:
Edition: The Breaching of the Great Bastion (1/3).
>Incompetent Governance:
Direct mention of massive internal disharmony gripping Cathay whenever the Emperor and Empress depart, largely because most of the Dragon-children are fundamentally bad at ruling their provinces (p. 4).
>The Deception of Shiyama:
Shiyama and her entire army being easily tricked by Tzeentch into turning on one another and slaughtering their own ranks (p. 6).
>Tragic Illusions:
Tzeentch casting illusions over Shiyama and her surviving men, causing other Cathayan forces to mistake them for monsters and execute them (p. 6).
>Lingering Corruption:
Explicit mention that the Celestial Dragon Emperor and his children struggled immensely to cleanse the lingering taint of Chaos from their lands, even after securing a major victory (p. 7).
>Ecological Devastation:
The Dragon Emperor intentionally dragging down a radioactive Warpstone meteorite to crush the Ogres, poisoning and permanently corrupting the once-verdant grasslands of Western Cathay in the process (p. 7).
>The Emperor's Schemes:
When the Monkey King attacked Southern Cathay, the Emperor strictly forbade Li Dao from retaliating; instead, the Emperor chose to trick the Monkey King using a compliance-enforcing magic crown (p. 7).
>Fallibility of the Dragons:
Chaos forces successfully wounding the supposedly "immortal" Miao Ying in open battle, shattering the myth of the Dragon-children's invincibility (p. 8).
>Unchecked Lawlessness:
Mention of a massive surge in pirate raids completely destabilizing the Cathayan coastline around the year -1357 (p. 8).

So, I've been toying around with starting yet another army, a small one for games of battle march, just to break the routine.
Thinking Wood Elves, as they seem like a fast, yet squishy army, very different from Chaos and VC, which I already have. I've built a tentative list, mostly focused on stuff I like, whilst also trying to keep a low-ish model count, as I tend to be a slower painter.

Forest hippies [497 pts]

++ Characters [121 pts] ++

Glade Captain [121 pts]
- Hand weapon
- Great weapon
- Light armour
- Shield
- Swiftshiver Shards
- General
- Elven Steed
- Asyendi's Bane
- Aspect of the Bear

++ Core Units [136 pts] ++

5 Glade Guard [60 pts]
- Arcane Bodkins

4 Glade Riders [76 pts]
- Reserve Move
- Trueflight Arrows

++ Special Units [221 pts] ++

7 Wardancers [119 pts]
- 7x Additional hand weapon

2 Tree Kin [102 pts]

++ Rare Units [19 pts] ++

1 Wood Elf Beast Pack [19 pts]
- 1x Deepwood Hound

Any thoughts, suggestions?
I have zero experience with WEs, neither playing with them or against them, so any input would be welcome.

Every time Cathay was depicted as nuanced, morally grey, or at least not perfectly benevolent or flawless:
Edition: The Breaching of the Great Bastion (2/3).
>Negligent Leadership & Cult Outbreaks:
The infamous Cult of Chi'an Chi (Tzeentch) spreading completely unchecked in the city of Beichai for a millennium (-1200 to -200) because Yin-Yin preferred sailing the world over doing her job. By the time she finally begged her father for help, a massive number of cultists managed to escape into the interior (p. 8).
>Vampiric Infiltration:
The ancient vampire Harakhte successfully settling down within Cathay, integrating into its societal fabric (p. 8).
>Astrological Chaos:
Morrslieb’s corrupting influence causing catastrophic storms of raw magic and triggering a massive spike in internal cultist activity in the year -666 (p. 8).
>Frustrated Defense:
Further mention of the Monkey King raiding Southern Cathay while the frustrated Fire Dragon (Li Dao) was explicitly ordered by the Emperor to sit back and not retaliate (p. 8).
>Indifferent Sovereigns:
Dark Elven Corsairs ruthlessly raiding Eastern Cathay, yet Yin-Yin stubbornly refused to protect the coast until her father finally ordered her to take an active role in Cathay's defense (p. 8).
>Imperial Failure:
Mention of the catastrophic, failed naval expedition to the Southlands in the year 1690 (p. 9).
>Sibling Rivalry:
While Miao Ying and Yuan Bo desperately try to steady the empire during the Emperor and Empress's absence, their siblings stubbornly refuse to offer any assistance (p. 9).
>Fractured Alliances:
When Chaos forces assaulted the Great Bastion in 2101, Miao Ying begged for assistance, but only the Jade Dragon responded, pushing relations between the Dragon-children to an absolute breaking point (p. 9).
>The Retribution of the Monkey King:
Breaking entirely free of the Dragon Emperor's magical influence, the Monkey King successfully launches a massive invasion into Cathay in 2163 (p. 9).

Mention that merely setting foot in the Forest of the Moon without explicit permission from the Emperor or his children is treated as a horrific, major crime (p. 11).
>Ruined Cities:
The historical record that the city of Po Mei was utterly razed to the ground during past Chaos invasions, proving Cathay's walls are far from impenetrable (p. 13).
>Unresolved Border Perils:
Regular reports of Beastmen warherds and rogue bandits freely terrorizing the Baleful Hills in Western Cathay (p. 14).
>Haunted Wastelands:
The city of Xen Wu in Western Cathay being completely annihilated by the creation of the Great Maw; rumors still persist of ghosts and daemons haunting the ruins (p. 14).
>Forgotten Lands:
The dangerous Wastelands of Jinshenn in Western Cathay being left to monsters and desperate outcasts who scavenge among abandoned villages and forgotten settlements (p. 14).
>Lost Potency:
Because the Dragon Emperor is absent, no one is capable of manipulating the vital Wu Xing Compass to its full, reality-shaping potential—not even the master administrator Yuan Bo (p. 19).

Zhao Ming’s armies relying heavily on dangerous mercenaries and highly volatile, experimental war machines due to his tolerance for rogue alchemy and foreigners, drawing intense disapproval and paranoia from his siblings (p. 20).
